The catamaran motors out of Grand Baie at 08h00, heading for the islands, passing Gunners Coin, before reaching the lagoon between Ilot Gabriel and Flat Island. About the Full Day Trip - See Dolphins and Visit Benitiers Island

As part of this cruise tour, you will discover the dolphins of Tamarin bay, visit the famous Crystal Rock which stands out in the middle of the lagoon, and visit Benitiers Island for relaxation on its beautiful sandy beaches.

Starting at 09:00, you will have a short pre-departure briefing by the boat’s captain, followed by a light breakfast , including coffee, milk, tea and buttered bread with exotic marmalade.

Then the catamaran will depart heading to Tamarin Bay area where you can encounter dolphins in their natural habitat. This is a unique chance to explore the spectacular lives of these magnificent marine mammals in their aquatic habitat.

The cruise will continue along the coral reefs. During the cruise, the catamaran will stop for breaks in some key locations, where you can enjoy a swim, snorkel in the sea, soak in the sun and sip on refreshing drinks aboard the catamaran. Snorkelling is a great way to have a glimpse into the mesmerising marine life and the underwater world of Mauritius.

Eventually, the catamaran will head to the beautiful Island of Benitiers . Before arriving at the Island, you will visit the famous Crystal Rock and will have a spectacular view of the Rempart Mountain , the Black River mountain range , and the magnificent Le Morne Mountain . For lunch, you will have a delicious BBQ buffet on the catamaran. The menu includes fresh fish, chicken, rice, pasta and potato salad, a variety of salads and a dessert.

Once you go ashore, you’ll get to bask in pure relaxation - have the leisure to tan under the glorious sun, walk along the pristine beaches of Benitiers Island or explore the amazing lagoons and coral reefs which are in close proximity to the beach.

Following the visit to Benitiers Island, the catamaran will head back to Black River. During the cruise, the crew members will make your time enjoyable, they will tell you about local folklore, and play Mauritian music which will lift the spirits of everyone on board.

A little information about Dolphins in Mauritius

Dolphins are perhaps the most fantastic of all the creatures that live in the ocean. The dolphins, cheerful and playful, are a symbol of intelligence and grace.

In Mauritius, the dolphins live in pods of about 20 individuals or more and can be observed swimming from Tamarin Bay (on the west coast of Mauritius), on their way to the deep sea off the coast of the Le Morne peninsula.

The most common dolphins in Mauritius are the Bottlenose Dolphin and the Spinner Dolphin.

The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Spinner Dolphin have chosen the West Coast of Mauritius as their place for rest and sleep before heading to the deep sea for their fishing.

The Bottlenose Dolphin is one of the most common and well-known dolphins. Bottlenose Dolphins are grey in color and measure between 2 to 4 meters (6.6 and 13 ft) long, and weigh between 150 and 650 kilograms (330 and 1,400 lb). Bottlenose Dolphins live in groups called pods that typically number about 15 dolphins, but group size varies from solitary bottlenose dolphins up to groups of over 100 or even occasionally over 1000 dolphins. Their diet consists mainly of small fish.

The Spinner Dolphin is dark grey, with darker patches in the tail stock, back and throat. Usually it has creamy-white patch on the belly though this varies considerably. The beak is distinctively long and thin, with a dark tip. The fins too are lengthy for dolphins of this size. Adults vary in size from 120 cm to 235 cm and weight from 23 kg to 78 kg. Individuals reach maturity at 4-7 years (females) and 7-10 years (males). The Spinner Dolphins congregate in groups that vary from just a few dolphins to great schools numbering thousands.

The clear waters of the west coast of Mauritius call for utter relaxation… Discover the west coast in all its splendour! Setting off from Black River, you’ll make your way to Tamarin Bay in search of bottle-nosed or spinner dolphins. With a bit of luck, they’ll be there, and their cheeky leaps and moving songs will be truly unforgettable.

Then we’ll head for some snorkelling to play with lionfish or trumpet-fish and then on to the famous ‘Crystal Rock’, a giant clam shaped coral, rising out of the turquoise lagoon. After a BBQ lunch served at anchor, a tender boat is at your disposal for those who would like to go on Île aux Bénitiers. We should be back in Black River at around 3:30pm.

Note that vegetarian meals are also catered during this trip. Ile Aux Cerfs is the most popular tourist attraction and a beautiful islet as well. Once arrived, you can either enjoy the sandy beaches or do watersports such as parasailing. You will have an open bar (beer, rum, cocktails) as well.

Ile Aux Benitiers: West Coast Catamaran Cruise

This full-day catamaran cruise includes dolphin swimming and a trip to Ile Aux Benitiers and a visit to the famous Crystal Rock along the way. The cruise will depart from the public beach of Tamarin Bay early morning.

During the boat trip, you will encounter dolphins all along. The boat may stop so that you can snorkel or swim with them. After that, you visit Crystal Rock which is a natural formation that rises above 200 meters on the ocean. You will also have a magnificent view of Le Morne mountain. A mouth-watering lunch will be served on board (Smoked marlin mousse, grilled fish and chicken, potato and rice salads, fresh salads, crispy bread, season fruits...) accompanied of white and red wine.

Free soft drinks, beer, water, rum cocktail will be offered all day long. (Alcoholic beverages will not be served before the snorkeling stop.)

After lunch, you will visit Ile-Aux-Cerfs at your convenience, swim, sunbathe or just relax, while the friendly crew will prepare the boat for the return trip. You will be sailed back to Pointe Jerome around 4:00 pm.

• Jelena K 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Lots of things to do but also things to be mindful of :) The day started off good, our driver picked us up from out hotel on time and was very friendly and efficient! If you are not a morning person please note that the start time is NOT the pick up time and if your hotel is not located near the beach then you may have to wake up earlier. For us we has to wake up at 5am for a 6am pickup time from the east. We arrived at the location on time and our driver took us to some toilets before we got there which was super considerate! However when we got there, we spent a lot of time just stood about and we weren't really sure what we were supposed to do/who we were going with. There were a lot of other tourists as well who I assume were waiting for similar things but again no one looked like they knew where to go. Eventually our guides came and walked us to the boat we were going to be using for the trip. We had Vic and Zen (sorry if this is misspelled) who were super informative and really cared about our experience. I have to say their energy and commitment really made this trip worth it and I'm very glad we had them! First they explained that we would need to look for the dolphins to swim and we ended up finding some where a lot of the other boats were. These are wild dolphins and the reason why the excursion is so early is because that is the only time they will be close to the shore. It was a bit difficult to swim with the dolphins because they would often submerge themselves in the sea to get away from all the boats, so you'd have to time it really well to swim with them. I was somewhat lucky and got to see them swim under me but they weren't very close. You can request a life jacket if you're not a strong swimmer. My mum didn't even get a chance to swim 'with' them because as she got in the water they'd be gone. After a few attempts our guides asked us if we wanted to move on (again really lovely people) and our group agreed that it would be best to start the next activity. Something to be mindful of when you're in the water is where your boat is! I lost my bearings and was swimming in the opposite direction but luckily my mum called out to me. I don't think I wouldve been left stranded in the water as there are so many boats around and someone would've helped but still a bit of a scary situation. Our next activity was snorkelling in a lagoon area with lots of fish! They put some fish food in the water so you end up being surrounded by them which is quite cool! And the water is not to deep and not too shallow so you can really explore. After, we when you Crystal Rock which is a gorgeous coral which grows outside the water! I recommend wearing some goggles/snorkelling here because the water is shallow enough that you can stand up in it, however there are a lot of sea urchins and sea cucumbers so it's easier to avoid them if you can see them. Our last stop was the island which we spent a lot of time on. There are no toilets on the island so if you need to do your business, you either do it in the water or in the woody areas. Also because the boats they use are speed boats, again no toilets on there, so your only option is really when you are in the water. Where we were sat there were loads of flies which is quite off putting when you're eating but hey, that's nature. I'm not sure if it was just where we were sat or if other groups experienced it too but just something to note. There isn't a lot to do on the island except swim or buy items from some of the stalls they have. Quite good prices and lots of variety too! I guess my issue was the amount of time we spent on the island, because we had to wait almost an hour before we ate, and then after we ate we had an additional 2 hours. So a total of around 3 to 4 hours on there which isn't super entertaining when there's not much to do except sunbathe, shop or swim. For food we had a BBQ lunch which was delicious, accompanied by unlimited drinks. Again our guides were amazing, serving us our drinks and telling us about things you can do on the island. They always made sure we were feeling good and were having fun! I booked this trip for just me and my mum and we had it nearer the end of our holiday. That being said we had experienced some excursions in Mauritius before this so I think our opinion would be different if this had been the first excursion on our holiday. You need 8 hours as the whole population above 16 seem to have 2 or 4 wheels and all go out at once. Grit your teeth it’s worth the ride. everything on the list is done. This excursion was exactly what we'd hoped for and with only a short time on the island, perfect for what we needed. Our driver (Vimal) was courteous, professional and passionately informative about not only the agenda but also gave us a great insight in to what it's like to live and work in Mauritius. He also scheduled the itinerary to avoid tourist and traffic hotshots. So it started well then parasailing was cancelled due to Cyclone alerts at that time .. we were told me and my wife you ll get a 40 usd refund each and you should contact the company , which we did and they confirmed it s gonna happen ! and then we were left behind me and my wife on the lunch island despite being on time for the final itenerary which was supposed to be GRSE waterfall , someone came back to took us with another couple that was also left behind and we found ourselves going back to the starting point without anyone explaining to us .. so i called the company and they told us it s also cancelled due to weather conditions and we ll get refunded this part as well .. So it s been almost a month without any refund and i also completely forgot about it .. and when i just remembered this morning i made the partial refund request i got an email of a 12 usd refund accepted !!! The lunch was delicious and truly food and drinks were unlimited. We saw the dolphins, but it was challenging because there were just a few of them and many boats. We would be happy to give a five star review, except for the fact that the taxi that was supposed to be included never picked us up after the trip. Together with two more couples we waited for 20 minutes and then asked another taxi to take us home; the phone number given as company contact didn't work and when we messaged them, we never received a reply. The southwest lagoon is home to several marine creatures such as dolphins, whales, and several other varieties of fish and corals. If you are lucky during your trip, you can encounter the dolphins. Prepare your camera to capture the famous crystal rock during this cruise.
