Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do with RYA Powerboat Level 2?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certification enables you to:

  • Operate Small Powerboats: Confidently handle small powerboats in various conditions. You can drive a powerboat to 10m in length and of any horsepower.
  • Apply for International Certificate of Competence (ICC): Use the certification as proof of competence to apply for the ICC, which is required for boating in many European countries.
  • Progress in Boating Education: It’s a prerequisite for higher-level courses, such as RYA safety boat courses.
  • Pursue Instructor Roles: Essential for those aiming to become RYA Dinghy or Start Windsurfing Instructors.
  • Enhance Personal Boating Skills: Gain confidence and competence for personal boating activities, including leisure and fishing trips.

Do I need to complete RYA Powerboat Level 1 before enrolling in the Level 2 course?

No, it’s not necessary to have completed Powerboat Level 1 before taking Level 2. Our Level 2 course is designed to cater to both beginners and those with some experience. The course covers all the fundamentals, ensuring that even newcomers to powerboating can confidently learn and master the necessary skills.

What kind of boats will I be training on during the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course?

During the course, you’ll train on a range of boats to provide a comprehensive learning experience. This includes tiller-controlled Rigiflex dinghies and larger 5-metre Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs). This variety ensures that you gain experience handling different types of powerboats, preparing you for a range of boating scenarios.

Are there any age restrictions for the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course?

The minimum age for participants is 12 years. However, it’s important to note that certificates for participants under 16 will be endorsed to reflect their age. This endorsement acknowledges the skills acquired while also considering the age-related limitations in terms of operating powerboats unsupervised.

What happens if the weather is unsuitable for powerboating during the course days?

Safety is our utmost priority, so we constantly monitor weather conditions. If the weather is not conducive to safe powerboating, we will modify the course schedule accordingly. This might involve more shore-based learning or rescheduling the practical sessions. We strive to ensure that all participants receive comprehensive training, regardless of weather disruptions.

How does the certification process work at the end of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course?

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive the RYA National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2). Our instructors assess participants throughout the course, ensuring they meet all the necessary competencies, including boat handling, safety procedures, and seamanship skills. This certificate is recognised nationally and can be used as proof of competence for various boating activities and further qualifications.

RYA Powerboat Advanced Professional Qualifications

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level of certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc. If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore. There are two types of Advanced certificate:

a)  A course completion certificate awarded by a training centre on successful completion of a two-day training course

b) A certificate of competence awarded by the RYA/MCA on successful completion of an exam

If you need a Powerboat Advanced certificate in order to work on board a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 3, 4, 5 and 6 waters - that is up to 20 miles from a safe haven. Please note: it is only possible to commercially endorse an RYA/MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence (option b above). The only exception to this is if you were awarded a course completion certificate (option a above) prior to 1 January 2005, in which case you may obtain a commercial endorsement without having to pass the exam.

We don`t run these courses in the height of the summer as they require a suitable length night session, which is difficult to achieve in the lighter summer months.  Courses run from September to April each year.

New modification of Russian VVER-440 fuel loaded at Paks NPP in Hungary

DECEMBER 14, 2020 — After the recent refueling at power unit 3 of the Hungarian Paks NPP, its VVER-440 reactor has been loaded with a batch of fresh fuel including 18 fuel bundles of the new modification. The new fuel will be introduced at all four operating power units of the Paks NPP, and the amount of new-modification bundles in each refueling will be increased gradually.

Development of the new VVER-440 fuel modification was completed in 2020 under the contract between TVEL JSC and MVM Paks NPP Ltd. Its introduction would optimize the hydro-uranium ratio in the reactor core, enabling to increase the efficiency of fuel usage and advance the economic performance of the power plant operation. All VVER-440 fuel modifications are manufactured at the Elemash Machine-Building Plant, a facility of TVEL Fuel Company in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

Paks Nuclear Power Plant

“Introduction of a new fuel is an option to improve technical and economic performance of a nuclear power plant without substantial investment. We are actively engaged in development of new models and modifications of VVER-440 fuel for power plants in Europe. The projects of the new fuels for Loviisa NPP in Finland, Dukovany NPP in the Czech Republic, Mochovce and Bohunice NPPs in Slovakia, are currently at various stages of implementation. Despite the same reactor model, these projects are quite different technically and conceptually, since we take into account the individual needs and requirements of our customers,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

For reference:

The project of development and validation of the new fuel has been accomplished with participation of a number of Russian nuclear industry enterprises, such as OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests.

Paks NPP is the only functioning nuclear power plant in Hungary with total installed capacity 2000 MWe. It operates four similar units powered by VVER-440 reactors and commissioned one by one in 1982-1987. Currently, Paks NPP is the only VVER-440 plant in the world operating in extended 15-monthes fuel cycle. The power plant produces about 15 bln kWh annually, about a half of electric power generation in Hungary. In 2018, the project of increasing the duration of Paks NPP fuel cycle won the European competition Quality Innovation Award in the nomination “Innovations of large enterprises”. Russian engineers from TVEL JSC, Kurchatov Institute, OKB Gidropress, Bochvar Institute and Elemash Machine-building plant provided assistance to the Hungarian colleagues in accomplishment of the project.

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom incorporates enterprises for the fabrication of nuclear fuel, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and design organizations. It is the only supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants. TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom provides nuclear fuel for 73 power reactors in 13 countries worldwide, research reactors in eight countries, as well as transport reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world operates on fuel manufactured by TVEL.  www.tvel.ru

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

rya powerboat training lancashire

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
