Rabaul Papua New Guinea

Rabaul Papua New Guinea

I’ve never been to a friendlier town than Rabaul , once one of Papua New Guineas most developed and vibrant towns. Everybody said hello, good afternoon, asked us what we were doing there, helped us flag down buses, got out of buses to make way for us, took us to shops, gave us directions, it was an amazing feeling after some warnings about theft from boats and watching our backs.

Sadly Rabaul was mostly destroyed in 1994 when two nearby volcanoes Tavurvur and Vulcan erupted. Two to three meters of ash was dumped on top of all the buildings most of which collapsed under the shear weight. Some buildings survived like the Rabual hotel as they feverishly shovelled the ash from the roof tops. They say many more could have been saved if others had done the same but it was all too late, most people had left town.

The grey area in the foreground of the smaller volcano was the once busy town of Rabaul –

We anchored outside the Rabaul Yacht club, once a thriving place it now caters for just a few people at a time if they are lucky. Pictures adorn the walls of lots of white faces and long lists of Commodores past and present (mostly past) it now sadly seems to get 1 or 2 visitors a day.

The nearby Travel Lodge survived the volcanic blast but has cleary seen better days, it now seems to cater for locals who require longer term accomodation.

The once tree lined avenues are now black ash roads with what looks likes large grassy banks to the side, they are simply huge piles of ash which the grass has taken to over the years. All the shops have gone, peoples homes have gone, the town basically had to relocate a few kilometers away to Kokopo and start again.

Talking to the locals they all seem to believe that their local town will quite literally rise from the ashes and become the thriving place it once was. Sadly its now 20 years on and one of the volcanos Tavurvur is still smouldering just letting people know that it could all happen again so easily.

On our third day in Rabaul we went and did a bit sightseeing and first up was the Japanese war memorial, one of the few things left standing amongst the empty ash filled streets.

Japanese peace memorial rabaul png

I was surprised that there was a Japanese memorial there as they were the ones who invaded and treated everybody so badly. It was in fact a Japanese Peace memorial dedicated to all those who lost their lives in World War II.

Next we kicked up the ash dust to Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto’s bunker, this is the guy who planned the surprise attack on Pearl Harbour with devastating results. He was actually opposed to war with the USA as he had studied at Harvard University and twice been posted as naval attache at Washington DC. This is where Admiral Yamamoto hid and did his war planning, only a small bunker but two small rooms still had paintings of PNG on the walls along with one ceiling showing a map of the world, wonder what he was planning here ?

Next door was the members club, twice restored after fires and earthquakes it now houses a museum showing the history of Rabaul through colonialism, war, volcanoes and earthquakes, its had it all.

The place is still surrounded by deep compacted ash –

If this was how the rest of our stay in PNG was going to be like then I was looking forward it. The very friendly residents of Rabaul had given us a great welcome and start to PNG !!

Nice touristy photos and stories but what beer were you drinking? Phil 🙂

Yeah sorry !! The beer blog has been a bit neglected recently !! Trying to catch up on a back log of blogging !!

Hi Simon I visit Rabaul on 24 of last month was on P & O Aria Cruise Ship on day visit. I visit Yamamoto”s Bunker with a Tour Group and was interested in where you found the Maps paint on Walls? Only Place I found some was as you went down first set of stairs, go straight ahead and back up a few stairs and there was a very small round room. With Outline of Rabual Harbour Area and couple faint drawings on the wall in this little round room. Was no light in this little room so used camera flash for light. The two big main rooms had just been painted white but painted around some Japanese writing the had Fluro light in the roof of this area.Where there other rooms with map drawings we missed? Thanks Graham from Lismore NSW Australia. Ps you are doing amazing work in PNG with Ophthalmology.

Hi Graham – hope you had a good time in Rabual ! I can’t remember the exact layout of the rooms but think it was kind of symetrical. There were two rooms of the same size, up a few stairs, low ceilings, round in shape. So there was another one like the one you found but just at the other corner of the big room. Regards Simon

Thanks Simon .What I read later I thought there was another small room with maps in it.I was fortunate to find the this one small room. We had a great time at all Ports spent a day each at Alotua,Madang,Wewak,Rabual, Kiriwina Is and Dioni Island and Sailed into Witu Island as Scenic Cruising.Where 13 Days away Ex Brisbane

Boldly going where everyone has gone before

Rabaul and the Rascals

I am constantly amazed at how different each country that we visit is, especially when we only sail to the islands next door.

So far Papua New Guinea has been a VERY pleasant surprise for us, particularly considering that it was never our intention to stop in Rabaul. After three weeks here I can’t even fathom why we would have sailed right on by.

Oh, right, the “rascals”.

Rascals is the local term that quaintly describes violent and unsavoury characters such as thieves, vandals, drunks who like to fight and machete-wielding crazy men that show up in the middle of night. PNG has a bad reputation about rascals.

It seemed everyone we talked too over the last year had bad experience in PNG. Normally we take such stories with a BIG grain of salt, after all there are bad places everywhere and many such encounters are a wrong place/wrong time scenarios. But these horror stories didn’t seem particular to one small area.

Everyone warned to stay away from the “mainland” which is the large island of Papua that PNG shares with Indonesia. That was a no brainer- decades of political unrest have peppered that islands history with seriously violent outbreaks. Port Moresby is still considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world for tourist. But we spoke to people who had problems at other islands. Let me tell you it is one thing to read stories online about being boarded and threatened but when you met the guy who suffered a broken arm and 16 stitches while defending his wife from a local man who had a machete held over her head you tend to sit up and listen.

After much consideration we decided that our safety was paramount to amazing experiences we might we miss out on. We would stop only at Kavieng, a small northern township that we heard nothing but good reviews about. The Fates, however, had other plans for us. After 12 long, slow days on passage, a couple equipment failures and a battle with a Kraken we pulled into Rabaul. Our hopes for the place were not high. Friends who were here last year fondly referred Rabaul as a shithole. But as an official Port Of Entry we could clear into the country, stock up on provisions and sleep, regroup and set off for Kavieng, about 160 nautical miles away.

We figured we stay 4-5 days, a week maybe.

Almost a month later and we are still here.

wp-1477866105622.jpeg

We obviously do not share our friend’s opinion of the place. On the contrary we think Rabaul is a tidy little town with a good vibe, albeit a bit dusty. A volcanic explosion in 1994 spewed over 2 metres of ash over the area so a little dust is to be expected. There is definitely a lot less garbage lying around than there was in the Solomon’s; most people actually use the bins in public places instead of just dropping their trash wherever. Gardens and lawns are tended, not only on private property but alongside roads and in front of the market.

Dusty Street of Old Rabaul

And the market is a pleasure to walk through. There is a long open air building with a cement floor, tables for vendors, and a roof for shade. Even outside in the dirt yard, where the market spills over on a weekend, there are tables set in neat rows so no one is squatting in dirt with their veggies as was the way in the Solomon’s. People still chew betel nut in PNG as they did in the Sollies. Betel nut is a fibrous tree nut that is chewed with powdered lime for it’s slightly intoxicating affect which but causes the user to produce and spit great wads of blood red saliva everywhere. It is a gross habit but in PNG they at least try and keep the mess somewhat contained- both on the ground and in their mouths- so I don’t have to supress my gag reflex when in busy public spaces.

But the big difference we’ve found is the people.

Everywhere we’ve gone while in Rabaul we’ve been met with smiles. We’ve noticed that although we are often the only white people around not many people stare at us, not even children. Everyone here says hello or good morning as they pass on the street, because that is the custom, not because we’re tourist. The kids on the wharf don’t use the dinghy as their personal floatie toy. In fact several times I have gone ashore myself I have had kids run to help me tie it up. Grandma’s at the market ask where you’re going and tell you which bus to take. Often when we take a bus back to the yacht club the driver turns off the ignition and waits in the parking lot, watching as we dinghy back to the boat.

Friendly Faces of Rabaul

The other day as I was in town by myself and as I was leaving a busy store there was a crowd of people gathered on the sidewalk all turned in one direction, watching. I figured perhaps there was an accident, I wasn’t too concerned. Then, before I could take another step or ask someone what was going on an older woman stopped me and told me to follow her, and the other ladies back into the store, “Come, come” she kept saying. I did.

After we retreated I asked her in pigin what was going on. “Rascals.” She replied, shaking her head. Someone was making trouble in the street. Within minutes security was on the scene guiding a tottering man into a car. “OK, its ok now.” She told me and I assured her I was walking in the opposite direction and thanked her for her kindness.

So, yes, we still have to keep our wits about us but he people of Rabaul seem to care; about their town, about each other, about us. It’s been a while since a place has made me feel like this, I didn’t realize how much I missed it. Love, H&S

Great to read a nice, positive article on our northern neighbours. I am sure the way you have been treated in Rabal reflects to open and friendly way you have approached the place and it’s people.

Hans, my Dutch isn’t any better now than when we met a few months ago!

Jaw dropped as I was reading this. ‘Dem rascals are seriously scary! Stay safe.

So fun following your journey 🙂

Yep. Too bad the word rascals makes them sound so cute.

Did you read a lot of Twain growing up?

No, never cracked a Twain but he is on my To Read list. Why do you ask?

You sound somewhat like him. I’d recommend The Innocents Abroad and my all time favorite novella, the Mysterious Stranger.

AIR & SPACE MAGAZINE

More than 70 years later, rabaul’s aerial battleground is still haunting.

The “Japanese Gibraltar” was the scene of desperate fighting in the fall of 1943.

Rabaul Simpson Harbor pan 11-5-12.jpg

I was well acquainted with Rabaul long before I went there. As a space shuttle astronaut in the 1990s, I had looked down from Earth orbit on the active volcanoes at this Papua New Guinea site on the island of New Britain. It wasn’t until last year, though, that I visited for myself to see traces of the World War II aerial battles for which Rabaul is best known—battles that culminated in a series of dramatic Allied raids 76 years ago this month.

Simpson Harbor, the drowned throat of a fuming volcanic caldera, is in fact best seen from the Rabaul volcanological observatory. The ridgetop site offers sweeping views of this superb anchorage, whose capture by Japan in January 1942 enabled the Imperial Japanese Navy to project sea and air power into the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and the surrounding waters. Rabaul became a Japanese Gibraltar.

After the Americans seized Guadalcanal, 660 miles to the southeast, in August 1942, the Japanese mounted their counterstroke through Rabaul. Bristling warships of the infamous Tokyo Express steamed down “The Slot,” intent on retaking Guadalcanal, and Japanese airfields ringing the harbor launched strike after strike at the shoestring U.S. Marine air group on Henderson Field.

Even before Guadalcanal, American and allied aircraft struck back at Rabaul. Beginning in the spring of 1942, medium and heavy bombers, from B-26 Marauders to B-24 Liberators, made the long run over New Guinea’s Owen Stanley Mountains to hit the enemy base. Later, from Guadalcanal’s Henderson Field and from bases along the Solomon chain, more bombers rose to attack shipping, destroy supply dumps, and cripple Japanese air strength.

Rabaul was the most heavily defended target in the southwest Pacific, ringed by 367 anti-aircraft guns. Allied attempts to damage the base gave rise to savage sea, air, and land engagements from 1942 to 1945, claiming hundreds of planes and pilots.

Today, the Kokopo War Museum near the Vunakanau Japanese airfield preserves an eclectic collection of heavily weathered weaponry and aircraft. The museum’s tropical lawn is littered with large-caliber Japanese flak guns, salvaged aero engines, and the fuselage and wings of a Mitsubishi A6M2 Model 21 Zero fighter.

On the museum’s second floor are cockpit fragments of the B-17E Flying Fortress, Naughty But Nice . Early on the morning of June 26, 1943, darkness cloaked the bomber’s 10-man crew as they dodged searchlights and intense flak to unload their bombs on Vunakanau. First Lieutenant Jose Holguin, the navigator, had already set course for their home field on New Guinea when a Nakajima J1N1 Gekko night fighter raked the B-17 with a hail of 20mm cannon fire. Exploding shells killed the pilot and ignited the left wing. Only Holguin got out of the spiraling bomber, parachuting into the jungle below. Locals nursed his fractured spine and bullet wounds in his jaw and left leg, but eventually surrendered him to the Japanese in hopes of getting him medical help.

More than 70 Years Later, Rabaul’s Aerial Battleground Is Still Haunting

What Holguin received instead was two years of brutal interrogation, slow starvation, and medical neglect. At war’s end, he was one of only nine Allied prisoners liberated from Rabaul. He returned in the 1980s, determined to help locate his crewmates’ remains; the last were recovered from the impact site in 2001.

In the ash-draped, scattered buildings of old Rabaul town, the New Guinea Club, a pre-war gathering spot for Australian residents, now exhibits the salvaged drop tank from a Zero fighter, along with wing segments bearing Rising Sun insignia, canopy frames, and an arsenal of Japanese automatic weapons. The twisted, nearly abstract fuselage of a Nakajima Ki-43-I “Oscar” fighter, shot down in 1943, still bears its weathered green camouflage and red “meatball.”

Next door is the underground command center for the Japanese naval antiaircraft defenses. Built of reinforced concrete, the whitewashed interior still bears military graffiti and a plotting chart to track incoming Allied raids. Because of his visit in April 1943, days before his plane was shot down by U.S. Army Air Forces P-38 Lightning fighters, the command post is still called the Yamamoto Bunker.

rabaul yacht club photos

Near the wartime Lakunai airstrip, a wrecked Mitsubishi Ki-21 “Sally” twin-engine bomber is the largest aircraft to be seen around Rabaul. Exhumed from under three feet of ash after a 1994 eruption, the forlorn Sally is stark evidence of the pounding delivered by the Allied aerial siege. By February 1944, the bombers had destroyed so many aircraft that the Japanese withdrew their few surviving planes to Truk. For the rest of the war, the 97,000-man garrison defending Rabaul went underground, waiting for an invasion that never came.

For the Allied aircrews running its gauntlet of flak and fighters, Rabaul was a living hell. It was even worse for those shot down and captured by the Japanese. The saddest Rabaul relics are the more than 300 miles of tunnels and bomb shelters dug into the volcanic rock by slave laborers and Allied POWs. In early 1944, the Japanese ordered captured airmen into a shallow cave, ostensibly to avoid incessant air raids. The site is still visible on Observatory Road. Enduring hellish heat, filth, and crowding, and given no food or water, the prisoners hung on by sucking dew from the tunnel’s blackout curtain. On March 4 and 5, 1944, Japanese guards, angered by a particularly heavy Allied raid, marched out 21 prisoners, who were likely executed in an atrocity known as the Tunnel Hill Massacre.

The handful of airmen who survived would never forget their ordeal. Today, those still visible relics of the Pacific air war in and around Rabaul are powerful reminders of the courage and dedication of those who flew, and fought, and fell.
