Abramovich angers Venetians with superyacht Luna

377ft superyacht Luna is ruining the views over St Mark's Basin, claim angry Venetians

Reports surfaced on the weekend that Roman Abramovich , the billionaire owner of Chelsea FC , has been upsetting Venetians by parking his enormous 377ft superyacht Luna in St Mark’s Basin, ruining views over the water for locals.

The Russian oligarch and his girlfriend, Dasha Zhukova , arrived in the city last week for the Venice Biennale , run every two years and one of the leading contemporary art festivals in the world. But instead of being welcomed with open arms, Abramovich and his party have been the subject of some negative press.

The city’s mayor, Giorgio Orsoni , was reported by the Guardian as saying: “The boats are getting too big and blocking the view. These yachts are showing up to Venice for free, but St Mark’s Basin is being turned into a motorway and we have to start limiting the traffic.” Orsoni is now said to be considering a tax on visiting vessels like Luna .

Meanwhile, local businessman Marco Paolini called the yacht’s presence “idiotic”. “There are so many beautiful places here, why do these people have to bring their houses with them?” he told the newspaper.

Perhaps unfairly, Luna , which reputedly cost £115 million to build, has become the focus of a wider debate about the increasing amounts of big ship traffic in the already bustling waterways of Venice.

A popular cruise destination , the city saw the arrival of more than 1.6 million cruise passengers last year. When the big ships travel slowly through the city on their way to the main passenger terminal, windows are said to shake and foundations groan.

But however much they complain about the presence of these big boats, the locals can be thankful for one thing – at least Abramovich didn’t turn up with his other boat, Eclips e , which dwarfs Luna at a whopping 536ft.

Superyacht Luna - World's Largest Expedition Yacht

Luna, the world’s largest exploration yacht has been undergoing sea-trials, outfitting and major paint works in preparation for delivery to her owner, rumoured to be a prolific superyacht owner. Luna has been kept so top secret, there is even less information about her than the Eclipse.

The 115m long range expedition yacht Luna was built in Germany by Lloyd Werft and Stahlbau Nord Shipyards. The superyacht was launched last October, becoming the second largest yacht to be launched in 2009, after Eclipse. Luna was recently painted to give her hull a stylish navy blue finish with waterline stripes instead of her initial white, giving the awe-inspiring sea-giant a new look.

Number 19 in our Top 100 forecast, Luna's interior was designed by celebrated designer Donald Starkey with the exterior designer still being kept under wraps. The design of the second largest yacht in 2009 somewhat resembles the exterior styling of the groundbreaking Eclipse , featuring similar forward designs on the above decks. Even the names can be said to be of a similar origin.

LUNA yacht has had an incredible journey over the years and has had a few facelifts as well.

Until now, LUNA is famous for being the world’s largest expedition yacht. Despite its large size, it is also known for having many family-friendly amenities that create a homey feel to it.

The designer, Lloyd Werft wanted to make sure each room of this vessel was appreciated appropriately.

The lounge and dining room are split by a wall and fireplace, so guests can enjoy different experiences in each room.

Guests can also enjoy a moment of serenity in the low aft deck’s sun worship room.

After some deep breathing exercises here, guests can also take a swim in the large pool that was once the largest pool on a superyacht.

Some other amenities on the LUNA superyacht are two tender garages, a gym, a beach club, a steam bath, a plunge pool, and a sauna.

It has a variety of activities for people to enjoy regardless of age.

Though LUNA has gone through many changes in her short lifetime, she continues to be a classic superyacht.

She is not only incredible to look at, but has everything needed for a good time out on the ocean.

LUNA was created to be a space for both adults and children to play in and have an unforgettable experience.

With the hard work of many workers and designers, LUNA has come to achieve that goal.

Specifications

The impressive LUNA yacht measures 115 meters and can reach top speeds of 22.5 knots.

It holds 9 staterooms that can house up to 18 guests and 49 crew members. The engine room of LUNA is different from most superyachts.

Not only is it large in volume, but it has a special polish that keeps the engine room squeaky clean.

Some staff members have described it as the cleanest engine room they have ever worked in.

There are seven generators that power the electric motors that take up less space on the ship, decrease vibrations, and make for a more economical ride.

Many have said that the original paint job was not the best, to put it lightly. One of its 130 jobs was to repaint the whole hull of the LUNA yacht.

It now has a mirror finish from end to end on its 2,000+ square meters of hull.

It took over 70 painters and eight months to finish this massive undertaking.

Now LUNA has a continuous shine along its hull with not a blemish in sight.

The interior of the LUNA yacht is chic but calming, which differs from the intensity of its exterior’s hard lines.

The LUNA yacht was created to be a space for both adults and children to play in and have an unforgettable experience.

Originally built by Llod Werft Roman Abramovich, it was sold to Akhmedov in 2014.

With its change in owners, it also changed in appearance. LUNA had a 14-month-long process with around 130 jobs.

These changes included adding wine fridges and separating the ballast tank system. It took a lot of work, but it definitely improved on a classic superyacht.

Yacht Seizure

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in May 2022, the yacht was seized in a German port due to its owner being tied to the Russian oligarch.

The 114.2m/374'8" expedition yacht 'Luna' was built by Lloyd Werft in Germany at their Bremerhaven shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Donald Starkey and she was delivered to her owner in March 2010. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Newcruise and she was last refitted in 2016.

Hi, I'm looking for design info on Abramovich's yacht Luna and I'm hoping someone on this forum would be able to help me. A few years ago I painted this mural of William Morris throwing Luna into the Venice lagoon, for Jeremy Deller at the Venice Biennale. At the time I tried unsuccessfully to find out how Luna looks below the water line...in the end I guessed it. I've been asked to repaint the mural as part of a William Morris exhibition and this time I would really like to get the yacht looking right. So I need to know how much of the hull is below the water line, whether the bottom of the boat hull is straight or curves narrower towards the rear and whether it has a bulbous bow below the water line. I don't need exact info, but just general (if that makes sense!)...I have emailed the yacht builders but had no reply. If anyone here can give me any info I'd be very grateful Cheers Stuart

Venice Biennale: Jeremy Deller's British pavilion declares war on wealth

Jeremy Deller 's British pavilion at Venice is about money and magic, heritage and horror. The artist's enthusiasms as well as his politics suffuse a complex and timely show that can make you feel both light of step and heavy of heart. Did our English warrior prince Harry and a mate shoot a couple of protected hen harriers, which inconveniently like to dine on grouse, on the Sandringham estate in 2007? A huge mural of one of the birds, with a Range Rover clasped in its talons, fills one wall. Elsewhere, you can sit on a bench made from a pulverised four-wheel drive and watch more Chelsea tractors being sent into the crusher as a steel orchestra plays Ralph Vaughan Williams and A Guy Called Gerald , and Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World . A tawny owl flaps by. This is the end of England, with the lord mayor's procession and a bit of birdwatching thrown in.

Deller punctuates his show with murals. He imagines the Channel Island tax-haven Jersey on fire, the banks and financial institutions of St Helier consumed in a future insurrection. Victorian social reformer William Morris returns from the dead to hurl Roman Abramovich's vast yacht Luna , which blighted the waterfront beside the Giardini at the 2011 Venice Biennale, into the waves.

You can hold Neolithic and Paleolithic axes, found in the Thames Valley and borrowed from the Museum of London, feeling the weight of ancient history in your hand. One flint weapon is so old it was fashioned by a pre-human. On his 1973 Ziggy Stardust tour, David Bowie was definitely post-human. Photos of the tour, of the artist and his fans, are juxtaposed here with images from the Northern Ireland streets during the Troubles, industrial labour disputes on English soil, strikes and demonstrations from the same year.

Deller brings us back to the present with drawings by convicted British soldiers, imprisoned for various crimes after their return from our current wars. A couple of squaddies smoke crack at Wellington Barracks the night before deployment. A soldier in full kit hides under a camp bed in Basra during an enemy attack. Portraits of an evil-looking Tony Blair and of the late Dr David Kelly remind us of our unfinished and interminable travails. Oh to be in Venice, now that Deller's here.
