Specification

The Faurby 400 offers excellent space below, giving a greater feeling of luxury and providing more options to customise the interior, tailoring it precisely to your own style of sailing. Everywhere on board has the feeling of space. The forward cabin has more room and extra stowage; an offset seat to aid dressing and more space for your possessions, while beneath the cockpit, her freeboard allows for more freedom of design in the aft accommodation.

The saloon can be styled to your desires, enabling you to choose the size, style and wood the interior is crafted in. The space in the saloon lends itself to long L-shaped seating to port while to starboard can be a long straight bench seat. Both of these make excellent on-passage berths, low down and close to the yacht’s centreline where the yacht’s motion at sea is most comfortable. Overhead in the saloon, twin hatches let in more light than a single hatch and provide more effective ventilation.

The galley offers an abundance of usable worktop space and stowage, giving the cook all the space they need to create meals whether in port or at sea.

In the cockpit, you can choose between a wheel or tiller as well as having increased stowage with lazarette lockers, or easier access and more crew space by choosing our open-transom design. Like all Faurby yachts she is designed to be sailed by a couple, so even when you’re on deck alone you can easily reach and adjust all the sail controls from the safety of the cockpit.

The customisable galley of a Faurby 400

The galley is pivotal to how you use your yacht, everyone has their own preference for the shape, layout and storage options. No longer do you have to put up with where’d how a designer wants your galley to be; you choose its location and shape, even which locker you’d like us to custom fit your chinaware into. We make a bespoke galley that works perfectly for you.

Grid slide - An ideal interior 2 - F400

The highly customisable saloon of a Faurby 400

No two interiors are identical, some have more customisation than others. Some are crafted in mahogany, others in teak or oak. Many owners opt for a modern, contemporary feel while others want something more reminiscent of the bygone era of classic wooden yachts. We make interiors that are as individual as a fine tailored suit.

Faurby 400 deck

To reduce turbulence and improve performance the skin fittings can be recessed and faired into the hull, as too can the seal for the saildrive. This is protected by a fibreglass fairing, making the hull as fair and streamlined as possible for the best performance on the water.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 1 - F400

a couple sailing the Faurby 400

A Faurby has to be a yacht that sails well, or she cannot be a Faurby. The slender hull shape has less resistance and is faster and more easily driven in light weather. This means you can sail in less wind and the design keeps the waterline almost symmetrical along the direction of travel even as she heels. This benefits the yacht’s behaviour; she remains balanced and easy to handle.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 2

Faurby yacht sailing at high speed

On a yacht like the Faurby that is designed for displacement speeds, the full length of the hull stays in the water while sailing. This retains the dynamic waterline length, which boosts boatspeed. Other yachts with wider hull forms can unbalance as they heel, lifting the ends out of the water and reducing the dynamic waterline length while also lifting the top of the rudder from the water. This reduces the rudder’s effect, losing steerage and is why many wide-hulled boats need twin rudders. We don’t need two, we use a single, deep rudder.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 3

Faurby yacht sailing at high speed

The sleek hull shape has enabled our designers to add more hull volume in the ends of the yacht, which increases the prismatic coefficient and therefore gives better boatspeed while sailing at displacement speeds. Or, put simply, it gives the narrower design more space in a hull that is comfortable, well-behaved and takes less effort to reach her potential hull speed.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 4 - F400

Faurby 460 side illustration

It’s not just the design of the hull that sets us apart, we offer a refined design of keel and rudder, streamlined to minimise drag and engineered to give the best possible stability and performance without compromising your ability to cruise comfortably.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 5

Faurby Keels

Our T-keel design has been developed by the double Olympic gold medallist Jesper Bank to reduce the drag by 40% over our standard appendages. A T-shaped keel has the least drag and put’s the yacht’s ballast in a bulb the furthest away from her vertical centre of gravity for the greatest stability. She will heel less and you can carry more sail area for longer, reducing the need for reefing.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 6

Faurby Yacht T-keel

The T-keel is optimised and individually built for each yacht. By increasing the draught we can reduce the ballast, making the boat’s total displacement lighter without affecting her stability. Likewise, we can reduce the draught and increase the ballast with minimal expense of her upwind performance while making shallower cruising areas more accessible. We can do this because the blade of the keel is made from a custom-made steel frame that’s constructed to give you the draught you require.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 7

Faurby keel frame

The keel’s steel frame is enclosed in a GRP fairing to make it as smooth, regular and as streamlined as possible. The shape of the lead bulb is designed to provide lift: around 2mm on our Faurby 460. It might not sound like much but it helps improve the yacht’s overall performance without compromising her comfort or safety.

Grid slide - sailing qualities 8

Faurby Jesper Bank rudder

The deep, short-chord rudder blade has also been developed by Jesper Bank. Taking inspiration from the pectoral fins of a humpback whale which are surprisingly agile, given their size. This gives the perfect balance between control, responsiveness and feedback.

Faurby F400 interior

Now the headlining and hatches can be added and the interior hand-finished. At Faurby we don’t hide the screws used to construct the interior. Instead, we make the interior so it can be easily removed for repair or alterations in the future. In 20 years’ time you may need to access some wiring behind a panel. We believe this is the best way of making a strong, fast, high-quality performance cruiser that will look after you whatever the conditions.

Grid slide - building process 1

Faurby hand made yachts

At Faurby we don’t make our yachts the easy way, we make them the right way and we pay attention to every detail on board. Each yacht’s interior is handmade – every piece of wood is cut by a person, not a computer. If you want a berth 15cm (6 in) longer, we can do that. Need more headroom? We can lower the floor and increase the height of the topsides in the mould, just for you. Because our master craftsmen are not bound by the easiest or most cost-effective way of building boats, we can offer you a unique sailing boat.

Grid slide - building process 2

Specialised craftsmen assembling the hull construction

All our hulls are hand-laminated at our yard in Lunderskov, Denmark. The gelcoat we use for the contrasting coloured hull lines are hand-painted into the mould before the hull’s gelcoat is applied. When that is dry, the layers of chopped-strand mat are hand-rolled into place.

Grid slide - Building process 3

Faurby steelframe in the hull

On our Faurby 335 we use a balsawood core throughout the hull, on larger models we use closed-cell Divinycell foam core and a substantial galvanised steel frame is both bonded and laminated into the bilge to take the loads from the mast and keel.

Grid slide - Building process 4

Construction of a Faurby Yacht

Stringers are also laminated into the hull for extra strength. Bulkheads and cabinetry for bunk and seat bases are laminated to the hull too, which creates a remarkably strong and rigid hull. The interior is then handmade according to each owner’s personal requirement for layout and storage solutions.

Grid slide - Building process 5

A specialised craftsman mounting the teak deck

While the interior is being crafted, teak is shaped and bonded to the deck. We take into account any customisation that was requested by the owner and shape the teak around any fittings accordingly. This creates a beautiful, unique and hardwearing deck.

Grid slide - Building process 6

Faurby hand made yachts

With the deck fittings in place and the interior cabinetry taking shape, the deck is bonded and through-bolted to the hull – through the solid teak toerail. The join is then laminated from the inside to make the hull and deck a single, strong structure.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you whether you are looking for the right launch, winter storage of your motor boat or maintenance and repair by our specialized craftsman

Danish yard Faurby custom-build each interior to every owner’s
requirements, Graham Snook heads to Denmark to test the first two boats of its new flagship model.

Product Overview

  • Sailing performance
  • Bespoke yacht
  • Hand built craftsmanship
  • High Freeboard
  • Slightly heavy helm

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:.

As yachts go, few cruising yachts sail as well as the narrow Faurbys, in particular this new 460E; a boat that will sail at 24° to the apparent wind at around 7 knots in 16 knots over the deck is little short of witchcraft.

But her shining performance on the water is only part of the story. Imagine being given a blank piece of paper and told you could design your ideal interior. What would you do?

How many cabins would you want?

How many heads compartments?

What kind of galley, and would you sacrifice saloon space for a chart table, or go without?

Most boat owners never get the chance to make such decisions; then again most sailors don’t buy a Faurby.

For some, being given carte blanche might send them into  a mild panic, but Faurby’s joint owner Thomas Dan Hougaard is on hand to walk new owners through the process, and given that 60% of new Faurbys go to existing Faurby owners it’s obviously a process that many are more than happy to repeat.

It does, however, make the job of a boat tester particularly difficult as each Faurby is built to her owner’s requirements, everything is a movable feast; you can do what you like within the confines of the hull with the caveat that it has to be safe and comply with the Recreational Craft Directive.

YM was able to test not just one but the first two yachts in Faurby’s new range and, while on the outside they are similar, inside they are worlds apart.

Given the modern trend of wide-transomed yachts with interior volume maximised by wide beam and hull chines, Faurby stand out for resolutely bucking the trend with its use of narrow hulls.

Chart table on the Faurby 460E

The beauty of a custom-built interior is that you can choose anything you want, making your boat unique. Credit: Graham Snook

To put that in figures, the 460E has a beam of 3.90m (12ft 10in), whereas the equivalent size Bavaria and Beneteau both are around 4.50m (14ft 9in) or 15% wider.

They also cost a lot more than your normal production cruiser. Yes, you have understood that correctly, they are smaller and cost more, so why should you buy one?

Two things: uncompromising sailing performance and bespoke quality.

THE TEST VERDICT

The 460E is an incredible boat, both in the way she sails and the way she’s built.

Yes, the build process could be simplified, and the boat could be made cheaper, but a boat like a Faurby isn’t about saving money, it’s about building boats using traditional methods and craftsmanship.

Faurby’s employees create boats, they don’t just assemble them, as might be found in more streamlined boatyards today.

Hulls Number One and Two of the Faurby 460E

Hulls No. 1 (L) and No. 2 (R) sailing together, are similar externally, but totally different within. Credit: Graham Snook

There are areas on board where it’s clear that those who built the boat want to produce the best hand-built boat possible.

But as good as they are you can still tell she’s hand built, so she doesn’t have the faultless, sterile precision of a machine.

All this talk of quality could easily overshadow the 460E’s performance, which is a shame because it really is as good as the build quality.

The angles she can sail upwind are nothing short of remarkable, though the gentle breeze and flat water during the test will have helped show this in the best light.

She is a refined sailing machine, and my only quibble is that a slightly freer helm would be the finishing touch.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

This is a boat for sailing purists who prefer not to put the engine on when faced with an upwind leg.

She’s more than capable of racing, but for refined cruising she will make your sailing experience one of pure pleasure.

As long as you’re happy to have a narrow yacht that sails to windward like few others, you can also have the interior that best suits you, built for you.

You can go out and buy a similar sized boat for a third of the price of the Faurby, but it won’t be made by hand or to your whims and wishes.

Faurby has been helping owners for the last 40 years, and it’s testament to the quality and ethos that of the last eight yachts sold, only two went to non-Faurby owners.

I would truly love to go through the process of designing the details of my dream yacht.

Sadly, unless I find £750,000 down the back of my sofa, it will have to remain a dream.

Maybe for you, though, it could become a reality.

Faurby 396E – A Role Model

  • June 12th, 2018
  • Sailing Yacht

The small Danish yard in Lunderskov not far from the small town of Kolding is what we call a “nice and small” brand: Faurby Yachts, that´s a name that has a certain sound to it and wherever a boat made by Faurby is entering a harbour you can be sure that there will be quite a number of people instantly falling in love with these boats. I would consider myself one of these: Faurby is a classic, a wonderful example of Baltic Sea boat building in the finest sense of Scandinavian design tradition . And it is so much more – as I could see during ancora boat show 2018 where two Faurby yachts, the 36 feet and the 40 feet boat, had been exhibited.

faurby yacht fotos

The boats are a sweet-talk for the eyes of everyone who loves fine lines of sailing yachts. They are sleek, low freeboarded with a nice, sharp and steep-angled bow. They follow the design principles of yachts which have a low centre of gravity with a high ballast ratio. The rigg is tall and powerful, these boats are made to sail. And sailing fast is the main priority. The Faurby 396E follows a tradition that seems long gone in big production boats and this is what appeals to so many fans – I could witness this attraction with my own eyes.

A GTO with WiFi

Faurby yachts, a small yard though, makes boats since 1976 (that´s one year after my own boat, the King´s Cruiser 33 was built in Finland) and they are producing not more than 10 to 15 yachts all in all. The process of building boats is purely handmade work by professionals with a big emphasis on making rock solid, lightweight fast boats – Faurby´s specialty though is the excellent craftsmanship of their carpentry on which we will have a thorough detailed look later.

faurby yacht fotos

The boat´s hulls haven´t changed in decades. The proven concept of the hull design needs no change: The yachts have excellent sailing properties on every point of sail. Optimized for going fast upwind, the Faurby is a typical Baltic Sea-boat that can sail on any direction to the wind or vice-versa, can cope with the ever-changing wind directions of the Baltic Sea. In this, the boat is a powerful sailing machine more than capable of taking on the big Oceans as well. Faurby yachts have crossed Oceans and circumnavigated the planet with ease.

faurby yacht fotos

It´s a GTO with WiFi one could say: Faurby yachts are equipped with just the best that is available on the market. The Anderson winch is a standard. Subtle changes have been applied to the Faurby. In this, the boat isn´t just a modern day made classic boat. Flush hatches, contemporary technical equipment, a powerful autopilot and a handful more (mostly subtly hidden) pieces of technology will make the owner of a Faurby not missing anything of the 21 st Century. But Faurby´s main asset is the interior building quality that can be dubbed unprecedented …

A role model of interior building quality

In a Faurby the joinery is made entirely of massive wood. There is no plywood. The style of the carpentry is reminiscent of the classic boating era so entering the salon is like a time travel trip back to the good old times. Everything is rock solid in here: When you touch a closet´s door and open/close it, you will feel the heavy quality in the woodworks. Salon layout is classy too: This 396E is a 12.14 metre long boat with a maximum beam of 3.40 metres – that´s narrow in “modern day” terms.

faurby yacht fotos

So there is a central foldable dining table with a 3-seater settee on starboard side and a U-settee facing it on port. Some stowage overhead and that´s it. No portholes in the hull, just some hatches and nice sleek windows in the coachroof. The pantry is small when one would compare it to a modern production boat 40 footer – but it´s sufficient. There´s a stove, a fridge and a worktop. What more would you need here?

faurby yacht fotos

The aft part of the boat features a small navigation station to starboard side with the heads. Again, the bathroom must be considered small in modern terms but I´m asking myself: What do I need in a boat´s head? More space? For what? I am down here to empty myself. That´s basically it. Brushing teeth, getting shaved or whatever is done outside anyway. To port side is the door to the aft cabin. That´s it.

faurby yacht fotos

All is done in nice, classy glossy painted Mahogany. It smells awesome. Not the Styrolene-stenches of mass production boats but the fine odour of so much wooden pieces. Faurby takes pride in their woodworks and from what I have seen upon inspecting this yacht they do it rightfully: I´ve seldom seen such a high quality interior building quality on a yacht before. Every single detail is a work of art, is made in heavy, long lasting quality. Getting a Faurby is acquiring a sailing diamond for sure.

A boat concept of past times

She is a modern boat made with modern production techniques on the one hand, but also a boat of a past concept. The Faurby is a sailing machine and made to do so solely. She is not appealing to too many guests keen on having a sundowner drink party and lounge around in a wide open cockpit – you won´t see a Faurby mooring in Saint Tropez with a bunch of Bikini-girls having a good time. She is made to sail. Made to heel. Made to eat miles. And so are her cabins made to … host a good night´s sleep.

faurby yacht fotos

The aft cabin could be dubbed “big quarter berth ” as the dimensions are narrow compared to a modern day 40 feet cruiser. But again: How much space in a cabin do you need? You need a bed to crawl into your sleeping bag, find a good shoring in heeled sailing and, well, sleep. That´s what you can surely do in the Faurby´s aft cabin. There´s a closet and a shelf , a small opening window for fresh air. That´s all. Same with the fore cabin .

faurby yacht fotos

Two lockers to both sides of the cabin, a big V-berth that has enough space for two adults. That´s it. Plain and simple, these are berths. Cabins made to welcome the tired sailor and offer a nice cosy place to find a good night´s sleep. No frills. No shenanigans. No bling. But everything is made well and without any flaws. The Faurby is beautiful craftmanship through and through.

Combining 21 st Century with the good old times

As I re-emerge in the cockpit I understand this boat. With so many other yachts I have visited so far I sat down in the cockpit area and imagined myself underway. In not less of these boats my imagination was putting me at anchor or in a harbour. I didn´t imagine myself actually sailing in these yachts. That´s different with the Faurby. Standing in her narrow – thus safe – cockpit, everything in her seems to scream: “Ready to casting off! Get the sails up!”

faurby yacht fotos

The layout of the lines is classy too: On the one hand all lines are diverted into the cockpit, but there is no such thing as German mainsheet system. The halyard winch and mainsheet winch are mounted where they are supposed to be: On the coachroof next to the entryway down. This is where the mainsheeter used to have his position. Two more jib sheet winches are mounted aft on the coamings next to the massive central steering wheel. The boat is made to be sailed by a couple.

faurby yacht fotos

The central steering wheel is mounted on a post. The design is reminiscent of classic steering posts, but again, combined with a modern day multi-functional panel that has a big plotter and secondary displays. I´ve taken a look into the big lockers and the lazarette aft where a massive autopilot is mounted. Again, the Faurby combines modern day techniques with a classic touch masterly. She is a true beauty and certainly not a boat for the everyday ordinary sailor. She is a fine example of a true yacht – and great piece of handbuilt quality.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
