Yacht Charter in Thailand
Thailand yacht charter
Thailand is the bustling sailing hub of Southeast Asia. Offering the most stunning, vast stretches of coastline and unparalleled tropical beauty, Thailand has become a sailing playground for superyachts from around the world. With year-round perfect sailing conditions, hundreds of smaller islands nearby to each other, the possibilities for yacht charters in Thailand are endless. There are two famous regions for yacht charters in Thailand: the southern Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Both offer spectacular natural scenery, peaceful sailing grounds, sheltered bays, and the most ideal weather perfect for cruising.
How much to charter a yacht in Thailand?
There is every imaginable type of yacht in Thailand for a yacht charter. Whether you are a couple in search for a romantic tropical getaway, or a group of friends wanting to enjoy endless parties on deck, or a family looking for the most memorable holiday in Thailand, there's a yacht perfect for your needs. A 40-foot, 3-cabin catamaran for two people on board can coast around $4,200 for seven nights, while a 47-foot sailing catamaran with four cabins can cost about $5,000 for a week's rent. Additionally, a 134-foot, 5-cabin motor yacht can cost around $120,000 for seven nights for ten people on board.
What are the most popular yacht holidays in Thailand?
Two regions in Thailand offer the most popular and most visited by yacht enthusiasts: the islands and coast of the Andaman and the Gulf of Thailand. Let's start with the more popular sailing ground, which is the Andaman Sea. Phuket is the jewel of the Andaman, and it's the most famous island in Thailand. Millions of tourists worldwide visit the island each year for its rich culture and history, and the breathtaking natural beauty surrounding the islands on the Andaman. Yacht charters in Phuket have plenty of options for itineraries, which include Phang Nga Bay, a World Heritage Site, and teeming with smaller islets made of limestone that seem to rise from the sea and into the sky.
With emerald green waters, pristine white beaches, and a plethora of secluded coves, bays, secret beaches, and caves, Phuket and its seas are genuinely a playground for water worshippers. Yacht charters can hop from one island to another in the archipelago of Ao Phang Nga National Park, with lush mangrove forests, limestone pinnacles, and hidden coves on the coast. Or they could head to the beautiful and famous Phi Phi Islands, with breathtaking views, powder white sand beaches, and all the shades of blue in its crystal clear waters. Other popular cruising spots include Krabi's islands, with over a hundred to explore, and the world-class dive spots of Similan and Surin Islands.
On the other side of Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand's coastal towns and islands offer a different atmosphere. More laid-back, rustic, and charming, the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Chang, and the Ang Thong National Park are the most famous cruising spots for yacht charters. Koh Samui is world-famous for its laid back atmosphere but also home to million-dollar villas and 5-start mega-resorts. It's the second most visited island in Thailand but offers a more family-friendly and romantic appeal than Phuket's crowded and tourist spots. Ang Thong National Park, a protected nature reserve, features 40 islands to explore, with each one being close to one another. Other notable cursing destinations in the Gulf of Thailand include Koh Tao and Koh Chang.
Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Thailand?
Being the sailing center of Southeast Asia, Thailand features luxury yacht charter destinations that offer a plethora of luxury yacht itineraries to choose from. Phuket is the top spot for luxury yacht charters in Thailand, with two world-class marinas: the Yacht Haven Marina, and the Ao Po Grand Marina, offering luxury services and hundreds of berths. Phuket also plays host to international regattas, such as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, Asia's biggest and most popular regatta. The Phuket International Boat Show also happens once a year on the island, where some of the world's best superyachts are on show.
The seaside resort city of Pattaya is another luxury yacht destination in Thailand. Close to Bangkok, this city is a favorite weekend destination for locals, offering beaches and nearby islands to explore. It is also home to the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, another world-class marina in Thailand. Pattaya also plays host to The Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, another event in Thailand where superyachts from all over the world are showcased. While Koh Samui doesn't have a marina, the islands offer many safe anchorages for luxury yachts to drop anchor.
Koh Samui has become a favorite for luxury yacht charters because of its popularity with the rich and famous. Offering luxury villas, resorts, spas, and indulgent experiences, superyachts have made their way to Koh Samui and called it home during the country's dry season of November to April. Thailand's magical islands and calms seas offer perfect sailing conditions in Southeast Asia. And with bustling tourism infrastructure, luxury villas, and resorts found on the coast, it is no wonder yacht charters are one of the best ways to enjoy an authentic Thai holiday.

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.
Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.
All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Yacht charter in Thailand
An amazing combination of pristine nature, modern pace of life and best traditions of Buddhism is the cornerstone that attracts sailors to Thailand from all around the world. If you dream about unforgettable yacht charter, Thailand should be in top of your list.
Located right in the heart of Southeast Asia, this country is surrounded by the Andaman Sea on the west side of the Malay Peninsula, and the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea on the east side. Until 1939 it was called Siam, which means "freedom.” Bordered by Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has kept its independence through the years. As a result, the traditional lifestyle that has been intact for centuries has been left almost unchanged. Well known for peace and calmness, the Thai people will make your Thailand sailing vacation even more pleasant.
Geographically, Thailand can be divided into 5 distinct regions, but the southern peninsula of Malay and the eastern part of the country are of the most interest to sailors.
Yacht charter in Thailand is very popular and the reason for that is that this country is washed with two oceans – Pacific on the eastern part and Indian in the western part. While sailing in Thailand, you may expect moderate breeze, clean tropical waters, number of safe moorings and anchorages. You definitely will not find here number of equipped marinas or harbors, but on every mooring or anchorage you will easily find some cozy local restaurant, water supply or grocery store. While Thai cuisine and the hospitality of locals will definitely bring only positive vibes.
Gulf of Thailand boat rentals
Eastern Thailand covers several provinces including Trat, Chantburi and Rayong. On the southwest, it reaches the Gulf of Thailand, and it borders Cambodia to the east. The rugged coastline is bordered with rocky islands and covered with lush green forest. While sailing in Thailand, you will see many rivers flowing south to create large mangrove forests, followed by pristine white sand beaches. The east coast is very popular for its resort areas, but few sailors know about the more secluded yacht charter opportunities in Koh Chang.
Sailing in Koh Chang
The Koh Chang yacht charter base is located only 194 miles (312 km) from Bangkok and offers excellent access to the mostly untouched cruising grounds of Thailand. Being the second largest island in Thailand (after Phuket), a Koh Chang sailing vacation is a perfect combination of emerald waters, white sand beaches and pristine jungle. Waterfalls and stunning lush landscapes abound while enjoying a Thailand yacht charter. Be the first one to explore this new sailing destination in Thailand! Koh Chang means “elephant” in the Thai language. A fitting name for an island that is shaped like a giant sleeping elephant.
Southern Thailand sailing vacations
The southern part of Thailand, on the Malay Peninsula, is a region endowed with unparalleled tropical beauty. This area's main yacht charter destination located in Phuket.
Phuket yacht charter
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, and is located near the west coast in the Andaman Sea. The east coast of Phuket offers the finest cruising grounds, with easy access to 39 different islands. Discover towering pinnacles of limestone when sailing in the sheltered waters of Phang-nga Bay, set sails to see the famous Phi Phi Islands located to the south of Andaman Sea, or the many beautiful islands in the province of Krabi. Make an offshore trip to one of the National Parks located in the Siliman, or Suring Islands, one of the most famous diving sites in the world. A Thailand yacht charter can offer something for everybody: rugged secluded islands, rich nightlife and luxury resorts, scenic anchorages and gorgeous white-sand beaches.
The kind and hospitable people of Thailand will make your sailing vacation and boat rentals in Phuket even more pleasant and memorable.
Best time for yachting in Thailand is from November to April. During this period, the weather is not too hot and there is quite a small amount of precipitation. However, tropical climate and no typhoons make sailing in Thailand comfortable and safe all year round.
But even though, to ensure that you will have perfect yachting in Thailand we recommend to choose the right time for travel. Favorable conditions for navigation along the eastern and western coasts are from November to April. If you are looking for some extreme sailing conditions, you may go to the west coast from May to October, during the monsoon season. From November to April the weather is ideal for sailing both on the west and east coast of Thailand. From May to October – is the season of the southwestern monsoon. At this time, it is better to avoid the western waters but there are dozens of different sailing itineraries from the main yacht charter base located on the island of Phuket.
Sailing tips
Phuket is gaining growing popularity among sailors of different levels. It offers great coastline, quite simple navigation and a large choice of sailing itineraries of different duration. So, all this makes Phuket the best starting point for bareboat yacht charter.
This place is so popular that on top of three comfortable yacht marinas on the island two more were opened in the recent years. One of the main advantages of Phuket sailing area is that gives you miles of emptiness and relaxing solitude free from big cruising ships.
Islands to sail
There are two main directions of routes for yachts charter vacation – eastern and western. To the east of Phuket is the Phang-Nga Bay, where the famous Panuk and Hong Islands are located. Also, you should pay attention to the James Bond Island, Krabi and Riley Beach, famous among rock climbers. The western shore of the island of Phuket is washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea, which is part of the Indian Ocean. The islands of Similan and Surin are located 100 km northwest of Phuket and included in the top ten places on the planet for scuba diving.
Even further to the northwest are the Andaman Islands, known for their pristine natural beauty, incredible fishing and diving. Andaman Islands are the territory of India, so tourists need an Indian visa.
During your travel along the bay, you should definitely admire the network of amazing grottoes, caves and tunnels of the island of Koh Panak. Landing from a yacht and having moved to a kayak, you can admire the hidden lagoons and mangrove forests that are in the center of the island.
In this direction is also the island of Krabi, famous for its snow-white beaches and emerald jungles.
During sailing vacation in Thailand, it’s worth visiting Phi Phi islands, which are part of the marine national park. Here you will find closed lagoons, calcareous cliffs of striking height and much more. A characteristic feature of the islands is the lack of cars on them. Their role is played by long boats.
A smaller one of the islands, Phi Phi Leh, was formed by limestone rocks. In this regard, the water around the island has acquired a unique turquoise hue. Although this island considered to be uninhabited, you can still find lots of interesting things to explore. Famous Viking cave with a picture of an ancient man, numerous swallow nests collected by locals as they considered to be kind of a delicacy.
Koh Hong considered to be one of the most fabulous islands in Krabi area. Here you may take your time and relax contemplating white sand beaches, hidden lagoons with shallow waters beaming with exotic fish. While on the anchorage take a kayak, and explore nearby caves. Up in the sky you will see sea eagles gliding in circles searching for prey while looking down you will find emerald bottom decorated with numerous starfish.
Bareboat charter in Thailand will give you a chance to visit Koh Pannyi – a sheer rock, with a small fishing village near it built on wooden and concrete piles. Here, among mazes of huts you will find small colorful craft market as well as some bars and restaurants offering variety of fresh sea food dishes from the catch of the day.
It is hard to believe, but there is only one policeman in charge of the island, and couple of years ago there was even no electricity. An interesting landmark is a football field built by schoolchildren directly on the water. There are no hotels on this island but you can spend the night on your boat or catamaran on a safe anchorage nearby.
Your next sailing destination is Koh Poda a small island, covered with lush palm trees and surrounded by white beaches. A few meters from the beach there is a coral reef: here you can go snorkeling and admire the diversity of the underwater world.
The other island nearby is Koh Kai – a rock that looks like head and neck of a chicken. Part of the island consists of steep rocks, and the opposite shore has beautiful sandy beaches. During strong tides this peninsula is partially flooded.
Phang Nga Bay will amaze you with its unusual, almost mystical beauty. A distinctive feature of this place are steep rocks, protruding vertically from emerald green water. The bay has the status of a marine National park.
Thailand offers great opportunity to combine yacht charter with diving. A lot of islands surrounded by coral reefs, as well as a variety of underwater terrain provide unlimited opportunities for diving. Here you have a unique opportunity to meet whale sharks. The best period for diving is November-May. Visibility in water can reach up to 50 meters. Similan Islands are the most popular among divers. Phuket Island in the Andaman Sea is famous for deep-sea fishing and trolling. So, do not forget to rent a fishing kit during yacht charter in Thailand and you’ll have a great chance to catch tuna, barracuda, sailfish, marlin and other exotic fish.
Thai Cuisine
Thai cuisine is largely determined by the climate and culture of the country. Tropical vegetation and the proximity of the sea caused widespread use of various fruits, spices and seafood.
Also, migration and contacts with other peoples affected the ways of cooking. For example, the homeland of Thai tribes is mountain settlements in the southeast of China (modern provinces of Guangxi and Guizhou). Between the 6th and 13th centuries these peoples migrated to the southern lands, where today Thailand, Laos and Burma are located. Naturally, all this affected culinary preferences. In Thailand, local cuisine is a mixture of Chinese and Indian cuisine. Culinary traditions of these countries have had the greatest impact on the formation of local gastronomic predilections.
There are no strict cooking rules in Thailand and taste of any dish depends not only on the set of products and spices, but also on the personal style of the chef. Very important for Thai cuisine is the balance between food, spices and side dishes. For example, fried chicken with chili is combined with a soup of bitter melon with pork.
Rice in Thai cuisine is the most important product, it’s like bread in Europe. And if the other dishes are served warm or at room temperature, the rice should be hot enough for you to see a steam.
The second main product is noodles: thin rice (kuaytiao sen lek), thick and nourishing (kuaytiao sen yai), yellow egg (bamee).
Thais eat little, but often. When serving the table, they do not use knives (all products are cut into small pieces). Finish eating usually with fruits. A favorite drink of Thai people is cold water (naam yen).
The main principle of Thai cuisine is to achieve a balance of five tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and poignant. Various ingredients are used for this purpose.
The two most characteristic of these are curry-based sauce and coconut milk. All kinds of sauces of Thai cuisine are considered a delicacy, their use depends on the type of dish or meat type. The most famous are kaeng massaman (includes cinnamon, peanuts and nutmeg); kaeng kheow waan (sweet and very hot sauce with greens); kaeng karee (served with potatoes).
An important nuance of the culinary traditions of Thailand is the aesthetics of the dish. Making a filigree decor of vegetables and fruits (carving) has become a kind of art here.
All dishes of Thai cuisine can be divided into four categories: quick-and well – fried or steamed dishes, as well as soups; spicy dishes – salads or fried dishes with different amounts of spices, often with the addition of coconut milk; salads – vegetable mixed with meat, the taste can be sweet, and sour but always spicy; cooked vegetables – usually sour, although you can meet them with a sweetish flavor.
Culture & traditions
Picturesque rocky islands, incredible views, wide sand beaches, warm sea and lush tropical vegetation – you will see this all during you boat charter in Thailand.
In Thailand, you will find a wealth of nature perfectly combined with ancient history, culture and traditions. There are hundreds of islands, beaches, coves and capes. While planning your sailing vacations Thailand can offer you a lot. Thanks to tropical climate, beaches with pristine white sand, crystal clear waters, excellent coral reefs and wonderful palm trees. Add to this the friendliness of the Thai people, their magnificent culture and wonderful cuisine. No wonder in recent years Thailand became one of the most popular sailing destinations in Asia.
The Kingdom of Thailand has a long history. And during your sailing trip Thailand may open some of its secrets. Over the long years of existence, the inhabitants of this country honor not only the monarch and the state charter, but also Buddhist norms. That is why in almost every part of the country you will meet small churches and chapels with centuries of history. There are a few tens of thousands of them all over the country.
People of Thailand call their home a “land of freedom”, because “thai” means freedom, and it’s not just a coincidence. Thailand is the only country in South-East Asia that has preserved its independence from European states, while all neighboring countries were once colonies of Great Britain or France. This helped Thailand to keep its intact beauty and uniqueness.
The main sailing area for yachting in Thailand is the Andaman Sea, but if you want to get more acquainted with the historical monuments of the country, then the best choice will be the Gulf of Thailand.
Fans of nightlife should go to Bangkok and Pattaya. Discos, go-go bars, nightclubs every evening are filled with people looking for entertainment. Loud music, bright neon lights, noise and talk of passers-by create a specific atmosphere here.
An important part of Thai culture is traditional music. The Thais also attach great importance to the theater. Modern art (cinema, music) is very popular too.
An integral part of the way of life of the Thai people is the elephant. In the past, these animals were used in battles, transportation of trees, and today elephants mostly entertain tourists. The image of an elephant can be found even on the Thai flag. Worth visiting is the island of elephants Koh Chang.
While sailing in Thailand do not forget to visit at least one the 80 national parks and 32 nature reserves. Khao Yai National Park is the most visited park in Thailand. For those who like to watch birds, it’s worth going to Doi Suthep National Park, Doi Inthanon, or to Khao Sam Roi Yot Park in the south. There is the last preserved rain forest in the Khao Yai National Park, which is one of the best parks in the world.

Thailand Yacht Charter Guide
Thailand's, Phuket makes a perfect base for your Thailand yacht charter in the Andaman Sea with it's international airport and central location. Phuket is conveniently located close to Burma, Malaysia and the Indonesian Archipelago. Although the potential cruising ground is extensive, Thailand alone holds plenty to keep anyone entertained on a yacht charter - in fact, you'll probably never want to leave. Phuket is a haven of activity with modern resorts, restaurants, nightlife and great shopping, for those who are interested. For those who aren't, you'll be pleased to know that once you start sailing you'll be more likely to come across stunning isolated beaches and wildlife, than flashy nightclubs.
Some Key Yacht Charter Hot Spots In Thailand:
The luscious landscape of Phuket is perfect for a luxury yacht charter: Untouched bays filled with blue water and silky sands are only a short cruise away from the modern delights of resorts, spas, clubs and high-end shops.
Thailand is gaining in popularity as a superyacht destination, offering exceptional berthing services and a mix of modern and traditional landmarks and activities. Snorkel in the clear waters and discover a myriad of marine life with family and friends, or dive deeper to swim with manta rays and bull sharks. Find your own private beach and learn a new skill on your holiday with jet ski instructors, dive masters and kite surfing instructors a possibility among your luxury yacht charter crew.
The Andaman Sea
Whether you want to visit as many destinations as possible or lounge about in one tropical paradise, the Andaman Islands are in an excellent position to include in a South-East Asia yacht charter: To the north, Myanmar (Burma) is strikingly different in its scenery while retaining all the mystical allure that draws holidaymakers to the region. Relax along the deserted beaches of the Mergui Archipelago and savour time spent with family and friends without any modern day distractions.
A superb anchorage and highlight for yacht charters, is Pang Nag Bay. Famed for its sea mountains that rise vertically out of the turquoise waters, they truly defy gravity and belief. There are numerous safe anchorages in the bay. Use a tender or dinghy to explore the quaint little coves, fantastic caves and inland lakes. Buy fresh seafood from the local fisherman to enjoy on board your charter yacht. Grill it up on your aft deck BBQ, or have is specially prepared by your chef.
Cruise on to Koh Phi Phi, one of the most spectacular islands of Thailand. Enjoy magnificent scenery, secluded bays and white sandy beaches on your yacht charter vacation. Follow a jungle trail on a mountain trek or enjoy swimming in the clear, turquoise waters. Relax on your charter yacht and enjoy the warmth of the tropical sun.
One of the things I love about Thailand is the way restaurants set up their little tables and chairs on the beaches at night. The candlelight flickers in the gentle breeze and the moon reflects off the rippling water and for a moment, you’re in the most romantic place in the world. Koh Phi Phi has grown enough commercially to have a great range of restaurants and live entertainment to suit all tastes.
There are hundreds of less developed islands also, to enjoy on your yacht charter vacation. The area is home to several national parks and reefs, which offer great opportunities for diving and fishing. For those dedicated enough to cruise out to the continental shelf, near the Similian Islands, there is some fantastic game fishing and the lure of the famous Black Marlin.
Thailand is a romantic and alluring destination for any yacht charter vacation. It has everything you could hope for in man and nature. Thailand luxury yacht charter
Known as "the "Land of Smiles," a luxury yacht charter in Thailand combines dazzling geography with unrivalled hospitality, rich local culture, buzzing nightlife spots, luxurious on-shore resorts and some of the world's best scuba diving sites. Yachts making their way through the Andaman Sea or the Gulf of Thailand will find plenty to explore, from the towering limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay to vast powdery beaches and tranquil turquoise lagoons on the Thai island of Koh Samui. With a concerted effort underway to turn Thailand into a top yachting destination in Southeast Asia, visitors can also expect an ever-increasing number of high-end megayacht facilities in the country's superyacht hub of Phuket.
Thailand superyacht season and weather
Thailand enjoys a tropical climate with temperatures staying between 25°C and 30°C all year.
Most charterers consider November to March to be the best months to visit when days are hot, sunny and less humid.
From December to March, visibility is often at its best and the Andaman Sea is calm. The wettest months are generally September and October. On the Andaman coast between July and October, the sea can get choppy and tropical rainstorms are frequent. As Ko Samui and Ko Phangan do not experience the southwest monsoon season, these cruising grounds can be a better option if you are planning a superyacht charter in Thailand between May and September. The tidal range can exceed eight feet.
Thailand yacht charter itineraries
With show-stopping cruising grounds, five-star luxury resorts and first-class hospitality, Thailand is primed to be a key charter hub in south east Asia .
The majority of superyacht charters focus around the Andaman Sea where there are more than 130 captivating isles within the province of Krabi alone. Off Phuket’s dazzling west coast the offshore marine reserves of the Similan and Surin islands offer superb snorkelling and diving with leopard sharks, octopus and kaleidoscopic marine life.
Phuket is the main destination for luxury yacht charters in Thailand. It's also home to the famous Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous, a premier racing regatta in Asia that attracts superyachts over 24 metres for eventful days of sailing and celebrating.
On the north tip of the island, Phuket Yacht Haven Marina accommodates yachts of 100+ metres. Ao Po Grand Marina is located on Phuket’s east coast, well positioned for exploring Phang Nga Bay, and can also accommodate yachts up to an over 100 metres. Yachts visiting the island's east coast and measuring less than 35 metres can dock at Royal Phuket Marina .
From Phuket’s palm-fringed east coast charters cruise into the spellbinding Phang Nga Bay, where great fingers of limestone shoot skyward from the sapphire waters. Yachts can take their pick of the multitude of pristine beaches and translucent lagoons. Stop at the Emerald Cave en route to Krabi where guests can head ashore to the vibrant night market, bars and restaurants.
Departing from Krabi, it’s a sun-kissed 30 nautical mile trip to Ko Lanta – the sleepy island of Ko Pu and its silky coves provide a good pitstop en route. With over 200 species of reef fish, along with whale sharks and kaleidoscopic marine life, Ko Lanta is a nature lover’s nirvana with some of the best diving in Thailand.
Around 17 nautical miles northwest of Ko Lanta, the magical crescents of the Phi Phi islands offer more spectacular beaches, hilltop vistas and fun-loving nightlife. The neighbouring islets, lagoons and coves are tailor-made for more snorkel, kayak and cruising fun – be sure to visit the famed James Bond island .
Cruising around the west coast of Phuket, luxury residences and five-star hotels abound, while the nightlife and markets of Kata and Patong offer a vibrant change of pace. Heading north, it is around 60 nautical miles to the untouched paradise of the Similan Islands. Celebrated for its colourful marine life, gin-clear visibility and a dizzying array of palm-dotted beaches, the marine park has a back-to-nature charm like no other. Awake in perfect solitude before cruising north to the equally beguiling Surin Islands and, if time allows, on to the mystical isles and anchorages of Myanmar.
Though most charters use Phuket as a hub due to the mature infrastructure and facilities, Thailand’s Gulf Coast also offers some stunning cruising of its own. The glittering archipelago of 42 picturesque limestone islands found off Koh Samui are picture perfect and the island of Ko Tao is world-renowned for its incredible dive sites.
Thailand by superyacht
Getting to thailand.
Thailand has many airports including Phuket International, Ko Samui, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Krabi airport, which all accommodate commercial and private jets.
Legal requirements
Until recently, charters in Thai waters could only be organised on local vessels, with foreign-flagged charter boats only able to visit as part of a multi-country itinerary (often beginning and ending in the Malaysian island of Langkawi, located 135 nautical miles from Phuket). However, these restrictions have now been eased so that foreign-flagged charter yachts are allowed to stay in Thailand much longer.

EXOTIC sailing DESTINATIONS
Yacht charter in the gulf of thailand.
Indulge in the ultimate luxury with our exclusive yacht rental services in the Gulf of Thailand.
Escape the crowded mainstream yacht charter destinations and immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the Koh Chang and Koh Samui cruising grounds.
These two distinct windows into Thailand’s island life offer a tranquil escape with no crowds, no hustle, and anchorages all to yourself. Enjoy unbeatably low onshore cost and soak up the beautiful warm tropical sunshine. Make sure to get here before the crowds arrive and experience the best of Thailand’s newest yacht charter destinations.
Koh Chang Yacht Charter
Explore the Koh Chang Archipelago with its 52 islands, available for yacht charters from October through April. This hidden gem allows yacht charter enthusiasts to sail in and around a largely undeveloped part of Thailand, staying off the radar of mainstream tourism.
The area boasts a perfect balance between large high-end resorts and small beach bungalows, providing the ideal setting for a luxurious yet affordable getaway.
Sailing conditions are safe and leisurely, offering plenty of opportunities for sailing without the fear of challenging conditions. Quiet tropical anchorages are within an hour or two, with islands approximately five miles apart. Forget about stress over finding a mooring or facing exorbitant fees—simply "drop the pick" at your favorite spot.
The water quality and white sandy beaches are unparalleled, offering excellent locations for snorkeling and diving. Keen divers can arrange dives on several wrecks in the area. On land, explore secluded waterfalls, swim with baby elephants on pristine white sandy beaches, and visit quaint fishing villages for incredible photo opportunities and fresh seafood. Often, you'll have these attractions all to yourself.
Consider side trips from Koh Chang to Cambodia and Angkor Wat, truly one of the wonders of the world easily added to the end of your trip. Whether you prefer five-star comfort or an Overland Adventurer style, you can also contrast your remote tropical holiday with a few days in the vibrant city of Bangkok.
Koh Samui Yacht Charter
Discover the hidden beauty of Koh Samui, long known for its luxury resorts, tropical beaches, and vibrant nightlife. This destination offers a fantastic yacht charter cruising ground, where within minutes of setting sail, you'll leave the hustle behind and find yourself at remote pristine beaches or anchorages offering everything from 5-star resorts to bamboo beach bars.
The yacht charter season runs from April to the end of August, taking advantage of high-season weather due to the Indo-Malayan Mountain range shielding Samui from the Southwest Monsoon. Cruising is safe and easy, with islands ranging between 5 and 20 nautical miles apart and warm tropical weather throughout.
Explore major islands like Koh Phangan (home of the world famous “Full Moon” parties), Koh Tao (named one of the top 10 dive spots in the world), and the Angthong Marine Park Archipelago. The diversity of this cruising ground is truly special, offering everything from white-sand beaches and crystal turquoise waters at Koh Phangan to world-class diving and snorkeling at Koh Tao.
The Ang Thong Marine Park features stunning limestone atolls, onshore walks, caves to explore by kayak, and amazing wildlife. Koh Samui's international airport provides convenient access, offering direct flights to Singapore, Hong Kong, and more. For those wanting to explore Thailand further, the mainland is just a short journey away, providing access to live-in Tiger and Elephant sanctuaries and adventurous journeys through the Indo-Malayan Mountain range that divides Thailand and Myanmar (Burma).
Alternatively, contrast your tropical holiday with a few days in the vibrant city of Bangkok.

The Sailing Grounds
Chartering a Yacht at Koh Chang is unlike any other charter holiday; less than 20 yachts are plying these waters amongst over 50 islands.
The balance of high-end boutique resorts and small beach bungalows is just about perfect. You can arrange a five-star meal tonight and take sunset cocktails at a tiny beach bar tomorrow, all at amazingly affordable prices.
Ashore, explore secluded waterfalls just a short hike away, swimming with baby elephants on white sandy beaches and exploring quaint fishing villages that offer excellent photo opportunities to those photographers amongst us, not to mention the super-fresh seafood. All of this, and often you’ll have it all to yourself!
Sailing conditions
Sailing conditions in Koh Chang are safe and “cruisie” there’s plenty of sailing to be done, but you’re not going to be rail-down with crew hanging on in fear of their life!
There is no stress over finding a mooring for the night nor exorbitant mooring or marina fees; just “drop the pick” at your favorite spot.
Getting to Koh Chang
Domestic flights run from Bangkok to Trat airport three times a day and take about an hour, then to the island by car.
A minivan from downtown Bangkok will take 5 hours to get to the mainland-side car-ferry terminal.
Yacht Charter Season
The Koh Chang sailing season is through the Northeast monsoon, starting in October and through to May. With more predictable winds and the lowest temperature, the peak season is mid-December through February.
The shoulder season on either side still offers excellent sailing, though temperatures peak in April.
Island Spirit Yacht Charter Koh Chang Base
Our Koh Chang base is at Ao Salak Phet, a quaint little fishing village on the southeast side of the island at the “end of the road.” Our meeting point is at our charter base office in the Salak Phet Seafood & Resort; it is on the east side of the island’s most popular seafood restaurant, so it is easy to find.
We do our area and boat briefings at our office, and you board your yacht at the floating dock on the resort pier, which is just a short 200-meter walk; non-the-less, our staff are there to help you load your gear. There is no beach at Ao Salak Phet; it is a working fishing village, and it doesn’t cater to tourists or offer much in the way of shops beyond small roadside local-style produce stores and street-food type restaurants. If you arrive the night before your charter, staying at Salak Phet Seafood & Resort is perfect, and there’s a good chance we can then get you off the dock in the morning. However, there is no place to buy provisions locally, so it’s best to use our pre-ordering service.
If you plan to arrive and stay on the island before your charter, we suggest you look for accommodation on the west side of Koh Chang. The west side is where all the action is, with a wide variety of hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, and long stretches of white sandy beach; it’s what you see in the brochure!
Things we have:
- Several other resorts in the area
- Yoga, spa & health retreat nearby
- 7-Eleven store
- Thai restaurant
- Mangrove walks & kayaking
- Stunning scenery
- Breathtaking sunrises
Things we don’t have
- ATM, Bank or money exchange (bring cash)
- Beach for swimming or snorkeling
- Nightlife or bars (the town sleeps at 8:00 pm)
- Western-style supermarket for provisioning
- Fuel station
- Telephone shop
How to get to our Charter Base on Koh Chang
Located 350 km southeast of Bangkok in Trat Province, Koh Chang lies alongside the Thailand/Cambodia border. A car ferry service operates between the island and the mainland from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, departing every 45 minutes or so, for the 30-minute voyage.
The Island Spirit Yacht Charter base on Koh Chang is located in the sleepy little fishing village of Salak Phet on the southeast side of the island, far away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. Although most taxi drivers know of Salak Phet, they may be reluctant to make the journey as their chance of picking up a return fare is virtually nonexistent, making the one- way trip rather expensive.
The safest and quickest way to get to our Koh Chang base is to fly to Trat (TDX) airport. Flights only come from Bangkok and are operated by Bangkok Airways. They have two flights a day which take one hour, and all flights get you to the ferry terminal in time to catch the ferry. You can find flight information on the Bangkok Airways https://www.bangkokair.com . We can book a taxi from the Trat airport to take you to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter Base, crossing the ferry in the taxi, so you don’t need to unload and reload your luggage.
The airport is 20 minutes from the Koh Chang ferry, and the ferry is about a 30 minute trip; however, the whole journey can add a few hours to your arrival/departure time depending on how busy it is and how long the queue is to board the ferry. From the ferry terminal on Koh Chang, it’s another 30 minute ride to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter base.
Private Transfer Minivan:
We can arrange a transfer for you from either of the two Bangkok airports or a Bangkok hotel to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter Koh Chang Base in Salak Phet. From Bangkok, it’s about a 6-hour drive depending on stops and the queues at the ferry. From Pattaya, it’s about a 5-hour drive depending on stops and the queue at the ferry. From Trat, it’s about a 2-hour drive depending on stops and the queue at the ferry. If we arrange transfers for you, our minivan driver will meet you at the airport or hotel and board the ferry with you.
Once you reach the island, the driver will take you on to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter Koh Chang base in Salak Phet, or you can make a detour to pick up some provisions. If you plan to arrange your own transportation, be sure to make arrangements for your driver to board the ferry rather than drop you at the terminal on the mainland side, which would leave you to hand-carry all your belongings onto the ferry by yourself and to negotiate the taxi ride to our base in Salak Phet once you reach the island.
The journey from Bangkok by car is pretty easy; the roads are major highways and are in good condition. You should allow 5 hours to reach the ferry terminal on the mainland side. Make sure you have plenty of time to reach the ferry terminal before the last ferry at 7:00 pm. There is free, safe parking at the Island Spirit Yacht Charter base, but it has no cover for your car.
Thailand has an extensive bus service, both public and private and taking a bus from Bangkok or other cities around Thailand is a viable option if time is not of the essence. However, we advise against the many “join-in” minivan services ( song teow ) available. They are the cheapest option; however, statistics show that they are the most dangerous option aside from taking a motorbike taxi! The duration of a bus trip will vary and is unpredictable, but it will likely be an all-day adventure. The bus will only take you to the ferry on the mainland, and from there, you will need a ferry ticket across and a pick-up truck style taxi to the Island Spirit Yacht Charter base once you arrive on Koh Chang.
We’re here to help
If you’re having difficulty with flights and transfers, please mention this to your Charter Coordinator to get the most up to date info and options. You can find further information regarding taxi, bus and ferry options at www.iamkohchang.com under Transport.
We do our best to equip your yacht with everything you need to operate it safely and enjoy living aboard. Below is an inventory list of items included with your yacht as standard.
It is not necessarily an exhaustive list. So, for instance, your yachts’ galley is equipped with appropriate cooking utensils; pots, pans, serving trays, cheese graters, tea towels; we’ve tried hard to ensure you are not left wanting. We make up your cabins before you arrive with quality clean linens. Each berth has a personal blanket, bath towel, hand towel and fluffy pillow. If you would like additional linens, no problem, if you know in advance, book and include the fee when you make your booking, or just ask our staff assisting with your boarding. We also provide everything you need to operate your yacht and to deal with minor problems. Things like a spare anchor, toolbox, rope ties, bucket and deck brush, and spare winch handles. Of course, we’re on call to support you if required, but it’s nice to have the option to deal with the little things yourself.
We do not include the following items:
- Beach towels
- Any food or beverage, IE there is no salt, pepper, sugar, spices
- Drinking water
- Fishing gear
- Personal toiletries
- Child safety netting (available for rent)
Childrens life jackets
Comfort is the key to having a child accept wearing a life jacket, and they don’t work if they don’t wear them. If you’re sailing with a child that cannot swim, we strongly suggest that you invest in a quality, fitted life jacket for them and bring it with you. Island Spirit does have a selection of buoyancy vests suitable for some children; please book in advance to ensure availability.

Rental Gear
It’s nice to have some toys out there to explore the smaller nooks and crannies on your journey. A kayak can also add a great deal of independence as it provides a means for people to go ashore without needing the tender.
Island Spirit can organize additional rental equipment for your yacht charter to take your adventure at sea to the next level. Usually, you rent equipment for the entire duration of your charter. Whether you pay for rental gear when you pay for your charter or plan to pay at the base, book the items you want before arriving to ensure availability.
Snorkel equipment
Each yacht already has a full complement of mask and snorkel sets, and there is a selection of fins on the dock for you to choose from, so there is no need to rent this equipment. We also have a selection of children’s sets available in our office.
Two-person kayaks are available to explore the many islands, paddle to the beach, up the streams or drift among your tropical surroundings. Kayaks are a great addition to a charter with larger groups or lots of older children; it gives you a chance to escape for some peaceful exploration or a romantic getaway. Kayaks are stowed on deck (not towed) and come with paddles.
Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP)
Step off your yacht onto the SUP and glide across the water’s surface. Explore the rivers, travel the coastlines, nooks and crannies or snorkel from your board around the smaller offshore islands and pinnacles. It’s a great way to experience the anchorages and surroundings while getting a little exercise. All our boards are over 350cm long x 80cm wide (11.5’ x31″), making it easy for beginners and children to learn quickly yet small enough for the experienced rider to enjoy. SUP rentals come with an adjustable paddle and leash.
Scuba Diving
We do not allow dive gear on the yachts due to the damage caused by dive tanks. However, talk with the Charter Coordinator to help organize diving trips with local dive operators. You must carry a PADI or equivalent certification to be able to dive on organized trips. BB Divers is the most popular dive company in the archipelago and has bases on the larger islands. Provisioning for your yacht charter on Koh Chang
A word from the base manager, “most people over-provision!” Koh Chang remains a favorite destination for discerning Thai tourists, so you’ll find the Thai food is authentic and of excellent quality. It’s relatively economical to eat onshore and, with no preparation or cleaning up, you’ll have more time to enjoy your holiday.
Nonetheless, stocking your boat with food and beverage is crucial; it allows you flexibility and freedom to move around at your own pace.
How much do things cost?
Prices vary from restaurant to restaurant, but here’s a rough guide. Most wine-by-the-glass is box-wine and costs 120 baht to 300 baht (USD $4 to $9), depending on the style of the resort or bar you’re at. A bottle of wine costs about 800 baht (around USD $23) in a supermarket and at least twice that in a restaurant.
A small bottle of beer costs about 45 baht (just over USD $1) in a supermarket and from 70 baht up to 150 baht (USD $2 to $4.50) in a restaurant. Good quality Thai food can cost as little as 80 baht (USD $2.30) per person in a local street-side or beachside restaurant, where a meal in a resort can cost anything from 800 baht (USD $23) per person and more.
Tips for planning your menu
When planning your provisioning, consider that Thailand has a warm and humid climate, boat galleys have limited space, refrigerators are small, and storage lockers are few, so you need to optimize what you take and how you use it. Design a menu that shares many of the same base ingredients but delivers very different tasting meals.
That way, you minimize the number of items you take on board. Keep the menu simple, so you don’t spend your holiday time in the galley trying to make magic happen. Here’s a few tips:
Don’t take too much fresh or cold food as your refrigerator space will be limited, and food left out will spoil in the tropical heat; salad doesn’t last long.
Buy veggies that don’t require refrigeration, carrots, cucumber, potato, onion etc.
Provision for all breakfasts and just one or two dinners aboard. Then have an array of cheese, cold cuts, nibbles and snacks along with fruit that does not require refrigeration, like apples.
Often, the shops on the outer islands do not have a lot of stock. Get all the western delights before your charter because they are difficult to find once you leave Koh Chang.
Don’t buy ingredients to make Thai food; it’s much easier and more economical to buy it onshore.
Provisioning
It is essential to provision before you arrive at our charter base at Salak Phet. It is impossible to do any significant provisioning beyond basic beverages.
If you are arriving by taxi and plan to do provisioning on the way, you’ll need to consider the available space you have, taking into account luggage. If you are a large group, split the group and book an additional taxi to take your crew provisioning and have the main taxi drive the Skipper and First Mate directly to the base with the luggage.
If you are coming by taxi from Trat, go to the island’s west side first to get your provisions, then come back around to the east side to our base. Most things are available, but you may need to visit several shops (download our provisioning guide).
From Bangkok or Pattaya
If you are arriving by taxi from Bangkok or Pattaya, there are many shopping options along the way, but the provincial supermarkets do not stock many Western products. If possible, provision before you leave the city or do your provisioning on the island.
Important note about purchasing Alcohol
Thailand restricts the sale of alcoholic beverages; you can purchase between 11am and 2pm or after 5pm to midnight. You can usually buy it all day in the smaller local shops.
What’s onboard
Island Spirit Yacht Charter will provide all guests with:
- 10kgs of drinking ice
- Kitchen cleaner
- Dish scouring pad
- Paper towels
- Gas Lighter
- First aid kit
Things not to do or buy:
- Turn up with loose items because you didn’t purchase carry bags.
- Purchase the following as we do not allow these items on the boat:
- Double strength, super-dooper toilet paper
- Steel or coarse scouring pads
- Cif or any other cleaner
- Bleach or toilet cleaner
Things to do or buy:
- Purchase carry-bags to transport your produce
- Minimize the use of cardboard boxes; they will not be permitted onboard after loading
The Island Spirit Yacht Charter Base in Koh Chang is open during the northeast monsoon season from October and closes in May. The best sailing conditions occur during the northeast monsoon because all of the best beaches, reefs and resorts are on the west and south side of the islands.
While the islands offer protection from the northerly winds, you’re free to explore this stunningly beautiful archipelago and anchor in any of the many tranquil bays. Koh Chang’s driest months are November to March, but it may rain a little during those times, keeping the waterfalls flowing and the tropical landscape green and lush. On average, the warmest month is April and the coolest/driest month is January.
Mid October through December
At the onset of the northeast monsoon, the winds are strongest, so we get some of our best sailing conditions in this period. Wind strength can range from 15 to 25 knots steadily throughout the day and night. These are Thailand’s winter months; temperatures in the evening can get as low as 18°C/64°F and in the daytime 27°C/80°F. There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms in October, but by mid-November, there is very little chance of rain.
January to March
This is the best time of year for a family holiday; there is very little chance of rain, just big blue skies, warm tropical weather and some wind to go sailing on. Not so windy that your crew will be hanging on white-knuckled to the rail, but adequate to allow you to sit back and indulge in the art of sailing.
Temperatures rise through January and, by March, we’re back to a balmy 32°C/90°F in the day, and as the monsoon dwindles, winds becoming less predictable and range from 10 to 15knots. There are very few days where there is no wind for sailing, and in the latter part of the season, we often get a westerly sea breeze providing a beam reach the entire length of the archipelago.
April and May
The monsoon transitions from north to south and daytime weather conditions become less predictable; most sailing is on sea breezes that come through in the afternoon.
There is very little wind in the evening, providing new anchorages to explore that would otherwise be untenable in the northeast winds.
