PUMPKIN KEY, Fla. - If you've ever wanted to own your own private island , now's your chance! Pumpkin Key is up for grabs, just off the coast of Key Largo in the Florida Keys – but it'll cost you a cool $75 million. 

According to the listing on Zillow , held by Liz Hogan of Compass Florida and Russell Post of Ocean Sotheby's International, the 26-acre property comes with a main three-bedroom pool home plus an additional waterfront mainland home within Ocean Reef Club , a private community in Key Largo, that's just a 4-minute boat ride away.

Politics | Anticipating possible surge of people fleeing Haiti, state deploys forces to South Florida

Anticipating a possible surge in refugees fleeing the gang-fueled lawlessness and chaos in Haiti, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday ordered more than 250 law enforcement officers, Guardsmen and soldiers from several agencies to South Florida and the Keys.

Their equipment will include “over a dozen air and sea craft.” Part of the deployment will be in waters off the coast.

It’s not certain what will happen next in Haiti, where people are increasingly desperate as the government continues to flounder and gangs rule the streets, especially in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Conditions are so bad that many Haitians see no alternative but to try to leave the country. And that could lead to an increase in the number of people who make the perilous attempt to reach Florida by boat. The journey is more than 700 miles.

The announcement from the governor’s office said the state was acting to stop a “potential influx of illegal immigration from Haiti.”

In strong language, the governor’s office announcement said such actions are necessary “when a state faces the possibility of invasion.”

The effort expands on an effort DeSantis announced last year. State agencies already had what the governor’s office described as “security and surveillance assets in South Florida and the Keys as a part of Operation Vigilant Sentry to stop illegal immigration at sea.”

Wednesday’s action involves “additional personnel and assets” from several agencies:

• Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 39 officers.
• Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 23 additional officers and eight seacraft.
• Florida National Guard, 48 Guardsmen and four helicopters.
• Florida Highway Patrol, 30 officers plus an unspecified number of additional aircraft and drones for surveillance.
• Florida State Guard, the new military force under control of the governor, “up to 133 soldiers” deployed to the Keys.

“For quite some time, the State of Florida has been dedicating significant resources to combat illegal vessels coming to Florida from countries such as Haiti,” DeSantis said in a statement.

It wasn’t clear how many additional officers and other forces already have been deployed to the region as part of the earlier effort.

In January 2023 , DeSantis activated the Florida National Guard in response to a surge in migrants coming in boats to the Florida Keys. In an executive order at the time he declared the situation a “major disaster” and directed state law enforcement to support local governments in South Florida.

At the time, many migrants were arriving from Cuba, but also from Haiti. Both countries were experiencing political and economic crises.

It’s unclear what will happen to Haitians who arrive in Florida. U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick said Monday that the State Department “confirmed to us and told us that there will not be any deportations” at least for the time being.

The Broward-Palm Beach county Democrat is the only Haitian American member of Congress.

State Rep. Dotie Joseph, D-North Miami, who was born in Haiti, questioned DeSantis’ approach. “Securing our borders in a legal and humane way requires real governance, not political posturing,” she said via email.

Joseph said “playing politics with people’s lives is on brand for radical right Republicans and may even be gaining popularity nationwide,” adding that, “We need to treat those fleeing violence with dignity and compassion, rather than manipulating the situation for political gain.”

The state could deploy its law enforcement resources in a way that would cut down on the violence that’s driving people to leave — by ferreting out and stopping the smuggling of guns to Haiti, Joseph said. “Rather than harass refugees who are literally fleeing for their lives, the state government can focus its law enforcement resources on making sure shipments from Florida are properly screened for illegal arms and munitions.”

And Joseph said, refugees shouldn’t be used as a distraction from issues the state hasn’t dealt with, such as high inflation in the state fueled partially by a worker shortage — driven in part by anti-immigration policies and exacerbated by high housing costs, which are fueled by soaring property insurance rates.

“Instead of actual governance, some politicians rather use vulnerable refugees as a scapegoat to distract people from failures to meet the economic needs of Floridians,” she said.

Also on Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat who represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, asked leaders of the House Foreign Affairs Committee to arrange for a classified briefing on the situation in Haiti. Moskowitz is a member of the committee.

“We are seeing an increased threat to the Haitian people from the gangs that are vying for control, both of the capital and the country as a whole,” Moskowitz wrote. “As one of Haiti’s neighbors, the United States has a vested interest in promoting stability.”

Cherfilus-McCormick urged the creation of a multinational force to wrest control of Haiti from gangs and the creation of a transitional government, using funding but not troops from the U.S.

The situation has been rapidly evolving.

Early Tuesday morning, the embattled prime minister, Ariel Henry, said he would resign once a traditional presidential council is created. His resignation was sought by many in the U.S. and international community, along with gang leaders who control much of what is happening in the Caribbean nation.

Although Cherfilus-McCormick agreed with gang leaders on the need for Henry to go, she wants to see an international force to combat their influence. “The gangs are taking over,” she said.

If you look at a map of the Florida Keys, you’ll notice the area isn’t that large, but with so much island territory, it’s important to prepare for weather and transportation needs.

When to Visit

The Florida Keys weather is fairly predictable. This tropical climate has mild and pleasant winters with temperatures around 70 degrees. Summers are warm and humid, around 90 degrees. Visit earlier in the year if you want to avoid the rainy season from June to October. You’ll run the risk of hurricanes from June 1 to Nov. 30, although the Florida Keys experience fewer hurricanes than other parts of Florida.

How to Get There

Driving from mainland Florida along U.S. Route 1 (the Overseas Highway) is the most scenic route into the Keys. The Florida Keys airport in Key West is convenient and has rental cars and shuttles available to visitors if you don’t want to visit any other Florida destinations first.

Where to Stay

From Miami to Key West, the drive is about three hours, so it’s possible to explore all of the best Florida Keys attractions no matter where you stay along the route.

All-Inclusive Resorts

While not the most popular lodging option in the area, all-inclusive resorts in the Florida Keys can be a great option for travelers who want a carefree and luxurious experience.

The newly renovated Casa Marina Resort in Key West offers romantic luxury, a private beach, an on-site spa, and occasional all-inclusive package deals. Book a stay at Little Palm Island Resort and Spa where the all-inclusive resort boasts an entirely private island for its guests for the ultimate indulgent beach location. The Parrot Key Hotel & Villas is a great option for more budget-conscious travelers who still want an all-inclusive feel, and some packages offer great family-friendly tours and entertainment.

Best Family Spots

Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo offers classes for kids during the day including a fishing program that might just provide your next meal. Hotels in Key West include the Hyatt Centric Key West Resort & Spa — with lots of rental gear and large, private balconies — and the Southernmost Beach Resort — within walking distance of many fun attractions.

Getting a vacation rental in the Florida Keys is an easy way to experience local neighborhoods and avoid the most crowded tourist hotels. Make sure to check parking accommodations as many areas have limited space.

One of the best reasons to visit the Florida Keys is to experience marine wildlife up close and personal. Dry Tortugas National Park is west of Key West hosting Fort Jefferson and an impressive array of local birds and coral reefs. Visitors must arrive by boat or seaplane, adding to the adventure and sense of exploration. There are guided tours and opportunities for snorkeling and diving in one of Florida’s most active reef environments. In the Islamorada area, head to Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park for a kayaking adventure through a hardwood hammock.

The Turtle Hospital in Marathon is a great way to learn about marine conservation and help support animal rehabilitation efforts. Visitors can even feed the turtles after a guided tour. If swimming with dolphins or meeting a local parrot is more your speed, head to Theater of the Sea in Islamorada to enjoy a whole day of marine fun.

Experience the Culture

The Florida Keys host year-round events, festivals, and artist workshops among the shops and local gathering spots in several downtown areas. In Key West, head to Duval Street for the best shopping and live music. You’ll also be near the Key West Aquarium for the perfect family-friendly afternoon outing. Mallory Square is also host to some of the area’s best artisans. Tour Earnest Hemingway’s Home and Museum or the Harry S. Truman Little White House if you’re more interested in exploring historic locations.

Enjoy the Beaches

One of the best reasons to visit the Florida Keys is to enjoy beach life. Head to Bahia Honda State Park for family-friendly nature trails and lovely sandy beaches. Sombrero Beach in Marathon is popular for family picnics and water sports.

FLORIDA TODAY reported David Rennie of Shelton, Connecticut, won the 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island , Florida, along with $250,000, a 2016 Bryant Sperenza model boat and 2016 GMC Acadia Denali car. The 3,150-square-foot remodeled home had Indian River water views in its backyard. It was a three-bedroom, two-story home off South Tropical Trail. Features included water views, a grand staircase, luxury dog house, pool and private dock. It had outdoor lounging areas, Florida-inspired decor, bold colors, three bathrooms and two half-bathrooms. Rennie, HGTV said, was chosen from 127 million entries.

“I thought I won the lottery with the kidney," said Rennie, who received a kidney transplant a year before the HGTV Dream Home win. "That was life changing, but so is this. We just never thought it could get any better.”

HGTV valued the 2016 HGTV Dream Home prize package at $1.5 million, and with a top federal tax rate of 39.6%, David Rennie and his wife, Margaret, would have had to pay almost $540,000 just in 2016 federal income taxes on their win.

April 2015: Real-estate agent Rhonda Pavone helped the network find the home, built in 1990 on one acre and sold for $826,000 in April 2015 to an HGTV-affiliated company, to remodel as part of the network's 20th anniversary. Its 2015 property taxes and assessments, based on the value before the makeover, were nearly $7,500.

March 30, 2016: David Rennie of Shelton, Connecticut, was named the 2016 HGTV Dream Home winner .

April 2016: Rennie had to decide whether he would take the $1.7 million grand prize package or the $1.2 million cash option , which included $900,000 cash, the GMC truck and model boat. He visited the 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island and blogged about it on Dave's Dialysis Diary . Rennie chose the cash option , and the house was listed at $1,530,000 later that month, according to 2016 story in FLORIDA TODAY .

June 2016: After David Rennie took the cash option instead of the 2016 HGTV Dream Home on Merritt Island, Florida, the house was listed on the market, and real estate sites show the 2016 HGTV Dream Home sold June 8, 2016, for $1.3 million . According to Realtor.com, back then homes next door to the 2016 HGTV Dream Home had a median listing of $570,000 and nearby neighborhoods had a median listing ranging from $200,000 to $4 million, and Zillow.com "zestimated" the mortgage at roughly $4,600/month, the FLORIDA TODAY story states.

Coincidentally, the HGTV Urban Oasis home in West Asheville, N.C., was sold June 11, 2016, to a North Carolina couple for $399,999.

As of March 12, 2024, almost a month after voting officially closed for the 2024 HGTV Dream Home sweepstakes contest, a winner has not been announced.  Rules state : "One prospective grand prize winner will be selected in a random drawing from among all eligible entries received during the promotion period on approximately Feb. 29, 2024."

The grand prize winner will be contacted by HGTV.  Official rules state : "Prospective grand prize winner will be contacted either by phone, email, in writing or via an 'ambush style' visit by sponsor's representatives at the grand prize winner's home or other location between Feb. 30, 2024, and April 30, 2024. The prospective grand prize winner may be filmed or otherwise recorded during such visit by sponsor."  Note:  Feb. 30, 2024, is not an actual date, but this is what was on HGTV’s site as of Feb. 20, 2024.

Is there a cash option for HGTV Dream Home 2024 in Florida?

In lieu of taking title to the HGTV Dream Home 2024 (and the contents of the HGTV Dream Home), the grand prize winner could opt for the “cash option” or $650,000 in cash. Total ARV of the grand prize is $820,000 if grand prize winner selects the cash option in lieu of the HGTV Dream Home in Anastasia Island, Florida.

Value of the total  Anastasia Island HGTV Dream Home  package is estimated at just over $2.2 million. In total, the winner of the sweepstakes will receive:

• Keys to the fully furnished home, which, according to rules, includes home furnishings, fixtures, artwork and merchandise for an approximate retail value of $2,069,595
• A new Mercedes-Benz E Class sedan worth about $70,000, according to the rules
• $100,000 cash

Can you sell the HGTV Dream Home if you win?

If you win the 2024 HGTV Dream Home on Anastasia Island, Florida, near St. Augustine, you can sell the home. Several past winners of HGTV's popular sweepstakes have done that.

The 2016 HGTV Dream Home winner, David Rennie, took the cash option, and his decision did not affect the “HGTV Dream Home 2016” episode hosted by HGTV personality Tiffany Brooks, who surprised Rennie with news that he won the sweepstakes at his church in Connecticut in March 2016.

Brooks went on to film a segment with the Rennie family on Merritt Island on April 15, 2016, for the big reveal. In an email to FLORIDA TODAY in 2016, HGTV said the “Dream Home” special already was in production and “in these specials, the focal point is the home itself as our viewers get a close-up look at the beauty and design of the house, as well as Mr. Rennie’s reaction to his prize. Regardless of his ultimate decision, he is still the HGTV Dream Home 2016 winner, and people get to share in his joy as he receives the keys and looks around the house for the first time.”

According to HGTV, “Some winners decide to keep the home and some take the cash option. It’s really a very personal decision, and each winner must decide what makes the most sense for them and their family at that moment in time. Everyone wants to live the dream of owning their own ‘dream home,’ but either way, for every winner it’s a dream come true.”
