J/92S: Clean Lines, Smooth Ride

  • By Michael Lovett
  • Updated: October 2, 2006

The beauty of J/Boats’ designs has always been their aesthetic simplicity and performance capability, and the new J/92S is no exception. While it shares the hull shape and interior layout of the J/92, the 92S has been optimized for racing with masthead spinnakers, a non-overlapping headsail, a deeper keel, and a bigger cockpit. I had the opportunity to experience these improvements firsthand during a recent afternoon sail with J/Boats president Jeff Johnstone. In a 15-knot breeze, the two of us had no trouble launching the asymmetrical reaching spinnaker, and the 92S quickly accelerated to an 8.5-knot pace. The boat felt stable but not sluggish, responding nimbly to changes in wind speed. The cockpit of the 92S is 33 inches longer than that of the 92, which opens up the workspace considerably. As with all J/Boats, the ergonomics of the 92S are superb: the footholds on the cockpit sole are perfectly placed for helmsman and crew; the mainsheet tackle and jib winches are within easy reach of the helm; seats raised slightly above deck level keep rear ends dry as the deck sheds water; the squared cabin top with logical handholds helps crewmembers make the steep traverse during heavy air tacks. The 92S is a carefully-designed 30-footer ideal for shorthanded sailing, racing, and weekend cruises. Compared to its 14-year-old predecessor, the 92S is faster off the wind and easier to handle, yet its comparable PHRF rating shouldn’t render the 92 obsolete just yet. www.jboats.com

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A updated version, the J/92S was introduced in 2005 with a newly designed cockpit, deck, keel, rudder, sail plan with non-overlapping headsails and masthead asymmetrical spinnaker.

The J/92 offers many rewarding features for the next adventure, weather it is a weekend getaway or a weeknight race series. This design was drawn with the family in mind and being able to sail to whatever caliber you want. The 5.5’ retractable carbon bow sprit, large cockpit and stable racing hull design are all spectacular designs about this 30’ racer/weekend cruiser. Smile N Wave was equipped with a new Yanmar engine in 2008 with extremely low hours, newer race sails in great condition and updated electronics.

Below decks, Smile N Wave does not disappoint, with her exceptional camper cruiser attributes and a large open interior. The most notable features for Smile N Wave are her forward manual head with a privacy screen and built in Espar heating system. The cabin is surprisingly roomy for a thirty-foot boat and proves that J-boat has once again, designed a well-rounded boat ready for adventure.

Interior Accommodations

Below decks on the J/92, there is a surprising amount of cabin space. The raised cabin top gives just enough headroom to provide a practical cabin and lets in additional light through the portlights. The main cabin has port and starboard settees comfortable enough to sleep on. On the port side there is a sink with a cutting board for basic food prep or a small camp stove. The single basin sink has water pressure by means of a manual foot-pump style water pump.

Forward, there is a hanging space on the starboard side for lines and gear and the head is opposite on the port side. There is a manual marine toilet and space for a sink in the countertop if you choose to add one. The V berth provides a large sleeping space for two people great for a weekend getaway or afternoon nap. The forward deck hatch lets in ample amounts of light and provides good ventilation when open.

For sale J/92, in excellent condition. This J/92 is a special one with many extras. The boat is suitable for serious competitive sailing or for touring. We have always made sure that the boat is in top condition. What needed to be replaced has been replaced. The boat had a refit in 2014. Everything has been off deck and balsa core has been partly replaced by a shipyard. Non-slip has been reapplied and all deck feeding are made full glass. Yearly new antifouling, last layer 2020. Wonderfully fast sailing yacht from the famous J/Boats shipyard. Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
