Ker Yacht Design uses state-of-the-art technology, techniques and processes throughout the research and design processes. Most of the research work is conducted in-house, however where a certain speciality skill or knowlege is required, we have a strong network of consultants who include our software suppliers.

We use software to both make the process faster and the results better. We habitually set up streamlined processes that allow us to carry out repetitive tasks automatically and through the time saved, we are able to focus our attendition on the creative aspects of the job where the real gains are to be found. These systems capture knowledge efficiently and allow designers to spend their time designing with powerful tools rather than spending their time entering/collecting data.

We provide an invaluable service to our clients offering a Virtual Reality tours around their prospective boat in design. Clients can go into the virtual world of the yacht experiencing the space and feel of it through the design process; really getting a sense of the yacht.

They can walk around the decks viewing the positioning of the helm, nav station or Interior layouts which gives a unique perspective and insight that makes it possible to plan their life on board.

3D CAD - Siemens NX

Since 2003 all Ker designs have been entirely modelled in the computer in 3D using NX, to ensure a high degree of accuracy of the surfaces which gives the boat builders a more precise model to work from. NX combines with solid assembly modelling, advanced surface modelling and computer aided engineering tools. NX is a fully parametric CAD system allowing components such as the hull to be replaced or modified whilst automatically adapting other affected parts such as internal structures. NX is a best-in-class tool chosen by other demanding users such as Red Bull F1, SpaceX and Mercedes Benz.

Finite Element Analysis – FEA

Ker Yacht Design use an FEA package – NX Nastran – that is fully integrated with our cad system – allowing the design team to assess the structural integrity of components or an entire vessel structure with a high degree of accuracy and as a routine part of our workflow. This process allows the structure and its loadpaths to be better understood and for excess material to be removed whilst ensuring that highly stressed areas of complex geometry are sufficiently reinforced, making the Ker designs stronger and lighter.

Keel CFD analysis

Computional Fluid Dynamics - CFD

Ker Yacht design has been at the forefront of the use of CFD for yacht optimisation and since 2010 has extensively used Numeca's FINE/Marine CFD code for hull and appendage optimisation. Continuous improvement in techniques and validation over the years using experimental data means we can confidently rely on our CFD data to guide and validate improvements. Ker Yacht Design runs its own compute cluster and has used external super-computers when timescales have demanded it.

Keel CFD analysis

Automated Batch Processing System - ABPS

When embarking on a project in a new design space (for example a commission for a new class, a modified handicap rule, or a new size range), Ker Yacht Design can use a customised Automated Batch Processing System. This allows hundreds or even thousands of variations of a design to be produced and set up for CFD analysis.

Neural Networks

To analyse the resulting data Ker Yacht Design makes use of neural network techniques. Neural network simulators are designed to emulate the way that biological “brains” work to assimilate and interpret large quantities and to “learn” patterns quicker than traditional iterative methods. In simple terms Ker Yacht Design can feed the Neural-Network a large number of design variations and results from the ABPS/CFD system and the network will “learn” the effect of each parameter (e.g. mast height or draft) on performance. The Networks output can then be used to predict the performance of a new combination of parameters without having to test the particular design in CFD, allowing rapid and extensive optimisation and/or the creation of very accurate VPP models of a design or set of designs.

Tank testing of yachts at large scale is now used mainly to validate CFD software and techniques, but our Ship hull optimisation customers typically use the Tank to confirm the final gains that have been predicted by CFD. To date the tank and CFD deltas between baseline and optimised hull forms have always agreed within one percent.

MC63p Tourer

MC63pTourer_Logo

Lightweight, strong and with contemporary, progressive lines, the MC63p Tourer is the power cat of the modern era.

Interior styling comes from m2atelier. Their attention to detail and innovative storage solutions that allow for living space to be maximised, make the MC63p Tourer a mini-superyacht, with luxury and performance ability perfectly partnered.

From the designer, Jason Ker of KER Yacht Design:

“On a multihull, a small weight increase has a big impact, and the MC63p Tourer has been strategically engineered to be as light and as fast as possible.

I’m passionate about designing boats that give their owners a wonderful on water experience and the MC63p Tourer delivers great seakeeping, a stable and expansive living platform, as well as a dynamic exterior line that sets her apart from the multihull fleet.

The team at McConaghy are vastly experienced in building catamarans that are much lighter than a typical cruising catamaran and this, partnered with their wider boat building expertise, has resulted in a product which I am immensely proud to be involved with.”

Berkeley Marine Center

Yacht Building

A complete custom boat building facility.

Berkeley Marine is the center of custom yacht construction in the San Francisco Bay Area. Racing yachts built at the yard are generating considerable buzz for their advanced designs, and for contributing to the rebirth of a local industry.

The facility’s dedicated, experienced design and construction team is the key to its success. Construction is led by long-time boat builder Cree Partridge, whose former company P-Squared Yachts, built dozens of high-performance racing yachts in Southern California throughout the 1980’s. Naval architect Jim Antrim, a familiar name in performance sailing circles, leads the design process. His innovative designs include everything from the Ultimate 24, Sportboat Magazine’s 2003 Boat of the Year, to a series of custom yachts, including an Open 50 built for the Vendee Globe and Around Alone races.

Also key to the team is John Palmer, who provides computer cut components of the moulds used in the construction process. The team also features outstanding talent in the latest composite construction techniques, in rigging, and in marine electronics. Besides sharing an appreciation for excellence, all members are dedicated to their craft in custom yacht construction.

A unique opportunity for the yacht owner

Building a yacht at Berkeley Marine Center gives the boat owner the opportunity to be as informed and as involved in the construction process as they’d like. Previous owners have taken an active role at the construction site, helping to work out the many details that can make the yacht a truly personal vessel. Additionally, a high-resolution camera monitoring system gives the owner real-time virtual access to the construction site.

Though custom racing yachts are the primary product of our construction facility, Berkeley Marine Center also builds custom recreational rowboats and custom components for all types of water crafts. We are also the official builder of the Antrim 27.

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

ker yacht design

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.
