Modern daysailers

1. saffier se 33 ud.

Saffier Yachts now has eight designs between 21ft and 37ft. The investment and knowhow the Hennevanger brothers have put into the production facility really shows too – the vacuum-infused builds and finish quality are top class.

Saffier builds seaworthy designs , tests all new models thoroughly in the North Sea and ensures its yachts can be sailed easily single-handedly.

best-daysailer-yachts-Saffier-33-SE

Launched in 2014, the Saffier Se 33 is a sporty design but with a practical self-draining cockpit and optional solid sprayhood, which help it handle most weather conditions. It has a fast underwater shape, a generous sailplan and a fixed carbon bowsprit. The extra-large cockpit features 2m benches and a folding transom and there is space enough for four to sleep below.

Saffier’s brand new Se 27 also looks like a seriously fun design and has been averaging speeds in the mid-teens with the kite up, clocking over 20 knots in its early trials this spring.

Prices for the Se 33 start at €114,500 (ex. VAT).

2. Domani S30

The S30, launched in 2018, is Belgian company Domani’s first model – a trailable sportsboat designed to be comfortable, fast and beautiful, says founder Michael Goddaert.

Inspired by Riva’s Aquarama motor boat , it has a large minimalist cockpit, spacious aft sunbed and a classy-looking compact interior. The narrow-beamed S30 weighs only 1,700kg, is offered with a long, two-part carbon rig, and has an electric drive as standard. A Lounge version is being developed which is similar to the Tofinou 9.7 in terms of deck layout.

Price ex. VAT: €88,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Black-Pepper-Code-0.1

3. Black Pepper Code 0.1

Those lucky enough to have sailed at Les Voiles de St Tropez may have seen these neo-classic daysailers from chic brand Black Pepper.

As well as this range of Code-branded daysailers/weekenders, the yard has just launched a new Sam Manuard-designed, scow-bowed IMOCA 60 for Armel Tripon’s Vendée Globe campaign.

The original Code 0, by Marc Lombard, is a high-performance dayboat with a distinctive squared coachroof, which is built light in carbon and epoxy with half its displacement in the keel bulb.

A new Code 0.1 version (pictured) launched last year, and is available in Open and Spirit (performance/regatta) versions.

Price ex. VAT: £148,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-A-Yachts-A27

4. A-Yachts A27 / A33

A-Yachts founder. Michael Gilhofer helped to develop the original B30 (pictured below) and was distributor for B-Yachts in Germany for 17 years. He commissioned the in-demand Lorenzo Argento, who formerly worked with Luca Brenta, to design a new range of luxury daysailers built in Slovenia and finished in Austria.

The first two A-Yachts models (the A27 is pictured above) are focused on performance daysailing, whereas B-Yachts has gone for more cruising comfort below. An exciting new model, the A39, is due for launch in 2021.

Prices ex. VAT: A27 €98,500, A33 €215,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-B-Yachts-B30

5. B-Yachts B30 / B34

The Brenta B30 is the iconic Italian daysailer. A real looker to keep berthed at your Portofino residence, it has a lightweight carbon/epoxy build and a high ballast ratio, for tantalising light airs sailing. B-Yachts is the brand that took the daysailing concept to the limit with the fiendishly indulgent (and very white) B60, which we tested, open-mouthed, back in 2008.

Although stagnant for some years, the company was acquired by Luca Brenta’s cousin Alberto Castiglioni in late 2018. Brenta, along with designer Alessia Lee, has worked up the design for a new B34 model due to launch this year, and they are now working on a B40.

The B30 (above) is now a modern classic, with more than 40 built, but the refreshed company has made some upgrades including a new rudder profile, fixed bowsprit, revised deck gear, a more functional interior and the option for an electric engine. But it’s still got those killer lines.

Prices ex. VAT: B30 €118,000, B34 €190,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Esse-330

6. Esse 330

This is the sixth model from Josef Schuchter’s yard on Lake Zurich, which builds fast, stiff and sporty designs. The new 330 is the first Esse that offers the ability for weekend/overnight sailing. Schuchter told us it is designed more for pleasure sailing than racing but has the same performance as the yard’s 990, using a 1m shorter mast and with greater stability and comfort.

Umberto Felci designed the 330 with a self-tacking jib, a carbon deck-stepped mast with no backstay and a high ballast ratio to help ensure it can easily be sailed short-handed. A lifting keel reduces draught to 1.55m and an electric drive is offered.

Price ex. VAT: €134,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Flax-27

A plumb stem and square coachroof give an alluring pilot classic style to this Judel/Vrolijk design, but it is the materials from which it is crafted that are most intriguing. Built by Bremen-based Greenboats, the flax (plant) or linen (fibre) is vacuum-infused with bio epoxy and can be given a clearcoat finish to help show off the fibres.

The focus is on weight-saving for this performance daysailer, using recycled PET as the core material. The deck is made from cork, the ropes are made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and the sails are recyclable.

Price ex. VAT, ready to sail: €126,000.

Modern-classic daysailers

8. eagle 38.

The Boersma brothers founded Leonardo Yachts in the northern part of the Netherlands to build top quality gentleman’s daysailers and weekenders.

Its range of gorgeous designs are inspired by the timeless lines and overhangs of the J Class , but with modern appendages.

The new Hoek-designed Eagle 38 is the smallest of a range that now extends to 70ft. It is devised for easy handling, with jib winches in reach of the helmsman/tiller, in a deep self-draining cockpit that can seat six in comfort.

The varnished mahogany interior can sleep three and includes cooking facilities and a neatly hidden toilet.

Price ex. VAT: €177,500.

best-daysailer-yachts-Wallynano-MKII

9. Wally Nano MkII

Wally stunned us with the unveiling of its incomparable Nano in 2009. The Andre Hoek-designed masterpiece certainly elevated the standard of extravagance (and price) for a daysailer. This Wally Nano MkII model released eight years later is a refined version of the achingly cool design, which marries Italian styling with Dutch workmanship and ingenuity.

A pilot cutter-influenced plumb bow, bowsprit and low, squared coachroof set off a retro style, finished by an elegantly overhanging counter. These classic lines meet contemporary construction and attention to detail at Joop Doomernik’s traditional Dragon building yard. The top class composite work includes a keel grid built from 33 layers of carbon. Believe me, the result on the water is a truly intoxicating ride, both upwind and down!

Price ex. VAT: €390,000.

10. Rustler 33

The Stephen Jones design has the elegant lines and overhangs of the Cornish yard’s earlier Rustler 24, but with a comfortable handmade interior that makes it enticing to overnight on too – there is a proper heads compartment including wet hanging area.

With the addition of stanchions, this becomes a Class B offshore yacht. It’s a stiff boat to sail with a deep, dry cockpit, in which it is comfortable to sit, perch on the chunky coaming or stand to handle the tiller.

Rustler says recent clients for the Rustler 33 are ordering them with carbon masts and electric engines.

Price ex. VAT: £165,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Morris-29

11. Morris 29

Fusing S&S lines with modern lightweight materials such as carbon and epoxy, the Morris 29 is a quintessential daysailer that’s easy to rig and maintain, a witch to sail and is as handsome as they come.

And there’s a deep, long cockpit and comfortable saloon below to keep any guests content while you hog the tiller. Now built by Hinckley and priced from US$266,500.

best-daysailer-yachts-alerion-33

12. Alerion 28 / 33

Cleverly marketed as ‘the 90-minute’ getaway, the iconic Alerion daysailer fleet, from 20-33ft, is designed to get people afloat easily and with the most enjoyment possible. Above is the Alerion 33.

Often seen sporting optional Hoyt jib booms, the models are easy and a delight to sail and have inviting and well-finished interiors.

Rarely do beauty, speed and single-handed ease combine this fluidly and successfully. Prices are available on application only.

best-daysailer-yachts-Friendship-40

13. Friendship 36 / 40

The elegantly timeless look of the Friendship 40, its classic lines, including pronounced tumblehome and wineglass counter, are by Rhode Island’s Ted Fontaine. A Friendship’s deep cockpit and wonderfully inviting and well-appointed interior invite you to sail on through the weekend and beyond.

Fontaine says both the 36 and 40 are still available to order, but at top prices: “The Friendship 40 would be built by Yachting Developments in New Zealand where the moulds are presently stored,” (priced in the region of US $1,350,000).

“And the Friendship 36 is being offered as a cold-moulded wood epoxy built boat that would be built by Rockport Marine in Maine – the yard that built the first 36.”

Best Catamaran Sailboats | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 28, 2023

The appeal of the catamaran sailboats in terms of speed , stability, and the ability to embark on long-range cruising has made them hugely popular with today's sailors. But what are the best catamaran sailboats?

Even though catamaran sailboats have become increasingly popular in the last few years, they have a truly rich legacy as one of the most sought after vessels for bluewater cruising.

Thanks to their incredibly wide beams and bigger daft, catamarans have become remarkably favorable for sailors looking to go for long-distance voyages, overnight cruising, and day sailing.

And if space is paramount for you when out there on the water, a catamaran sailboat is the only way to go as they offer extraordinary space to allow you to spend more time on the water with friends and family.

But even with all these amazing features, you're probably still wondering; what are the best catamaran sailboats?

Like their monohull counterparts, choosing the best catamaran sailboat can be quite overwhelming since there are lots of them out there. They come in a wide variety of designs and sizes ranging from small catamarans to huge ones.

The best catamaran sailboats can easily clock 250-mile voyages, offer incredible performance, and have layouts that can be easily optimized for individuals, charter markets, and great accommodation. In essence, the best catamaran sailboats offer respectable performance and offer good load-carrying ability.

That being said, here are some of the best catamaran sailboats that you can get your hands on.

Table of contents

Best Catamarans

{{boat-info="/boats/manta-42"}}

Even though many multihulls are no longer built in the United States these days, the Manta 42 is a true American-built catamaran that brings good living and good value into one package. Designed cleverly for easy handling, this American built catamaran is a great choice for a liveaboard cruiser for sailors looking to go for long-distance voyages. Thanks to its trademark high bows and an enormously curved incorporated forward crossbeam, this catamaran is easily recognizable even from a distance.

It is designed with a uniquely fixed crossbeam, which is very different from conventional aluminum cross beams that support the tension of the forestay. This fixed crossbeam allows for a little bit of movement thereby helping in absorbing enormous twisting forces of the bows. As such, you have to keep in mind that there may be resultant stress crack particularly in the bow area of the vessel.

All in all, the Manta 42 is a superb offshore cruising catamaran that offers a good sail-area-to-displacement ratio as well as plenty of space and accommodation. The cockpit area is refined, luxurious, and is designed with additional stainless pushpit contraptions to help in holding objects such as wind vanes, dinghies, and solar panels. The boat's quality in terms of performance and stability is the benchmark of what a catamaran should be.

Fountaine Pajot Elba 45

{{boat-info="/boats/fountaine-pajot-elba-45"}}

Recently named the "Boat of the Year" for 2019 by Cruising World Magazine and Sail Magazine, the Elba 45 is the latest model in the incredible line of Fountaine Pajot catamarans. This boat was designed to replace the outgoing Helia 44 and stands to be one of the most popular catamarans with Fountain Pajot having sold over 100 Elba 45 hulls long before even the first one emerged from production.

This French-built cat brings to the fore a well-thought-out, safe, and dependable features with 10% less drag, efficient motoring, top-notch performance, and high speeds. It's also designed with fixed stub keels and slightly aft-raked bows, which are all essential in enhancing windward performance; something that most catamarans struggle with.

To improve on safety, the keels of this amazing catamaran sailboat are glued into a particularly designed recess in the hulls. This is to ensure that there are no keel bolts that can rip out and put the boat in danger if the boat gets grounded or in the event of a collision. The rig is also ICW friendly and is a true representation of a standard catamaran setup.

This is, without a doubt, a modern-looking cruising catamaran that has a low-profile lounging space on its deck, high topsides and bows as well as a more pronounced reverse sheer that's essential in minimizing the bulk of the windows while creating additional and useful volume below. This is a true catamaran that occupies a sweet spot for those looking to sail along the bay or for those adventurous sailors looking to set sail for more ambitious offshore cruising plans.

{{boat-info="/boats/leopard-48"}}

With its fine design, straightforward systems, and easy handling, the Leopard 48 has everything it needs to be ranked among the distinguished category of the best catamaran sailboats. This is an excellent multihull that is structured with advanced materials, designs, and innovations that are meant to be fun, spacious, and comfortable.

Designed in South Africa by Simonis-Voogd, is probably the best design in the Leopard family of catamarans. Its two hulls are vacuum-bagged using balsa core to offer maximum firmness while ensuring that the weight is on the minimum. This is done by articulately regulating the level of resin in the layup. With such types of hull shapes, this catamaran sailboat is very fast and can consistently clock 12 knots of speed against the currents.

The boat is also designed with shallow keels as they're filled with closed-cell polyurethane foam that's of great importance in increasing buoyancy and preventing water ingress. To enhance the safety of the vessel, the stern and bow both have bulkheads that are essential in keeping out that water if the sailboat is involved in a collision.

The hulls of this boat are deep and narrow, particularly below the waterline. They also curve higher up to practically reduce the wetted surface area while offering enough deck space and plenty of room for accommodations. Its cockpit is another excellent feature thanks to its lavish spaces that give you the chance of kicking back and relaxing.

This boat is designed to offer superior livability, quick and easy to handle features, as well as enough space for friends and family. It is designed with beautiful lines and immense practicality for those who want to go on long cruising voyages.

Antares 44i

While many people often believe that voluminous cruising catamarans should be used as charter boats, the Antares 44i brings a very different perspective altogether. Designed in Argentina as a complete bluewater catamaran, this is a boat that's specifically built for private boat owners looking for a sturdy and well-equipped bluewater cruiser. This is an absolutely gorgeous catamaran that has a fully-equipped cockpit just to ensure that you can safely operate it even when shorthanded.

Like most catamarans, the Antares 44i is designed with features that allow for long-distance voyages. It comes with a minimum bridge deck clearance of 30 inches, which is essential in mitigating bridge deck slap. The helm station is designed to offer excellent visibility over the coach roof without having to perch the helmsman high above the cockpit.

If you're planning to make those long-distance cruising to exotic places, you'll appreciate this boat's layout. The galley is put down in the port hull so that it doesn't compromise the size of the galley and the saloon. The forward-facing navigation station is up there with the best and is up to offshore standards. And that's not all; the Antares 44i comes with good mounting points for electronics, a large table, comfortable seats, and provides brilliant visibility outside.

This boat is perfectly suited for extended offshore cruising and is a great reminder for anyone who thinks that all catamarans are charter boats and all offshore boats are monohulls.

{{boat-info="/boats/dolphin-ocema-42"}}

Designed by Philipe Pouvreau in northern Brazil, the Dolphin Ocema 42 is a truly unique catamaran sailboat that goes against the conventional norm of catamarans. It is equipped with daggerboards, which are essential in enabling it to point higher on the wind while reducing the wetted surface when running or anchoring in shallow surfaces. This, however, requires a higher level of expertise in sailing. This is because lifting the daggerboards higher up will expose the rudders while the daggerboards can also interfere with the hulls in the event that the vessel runs aground.

But even with that, the Dolphin 42 balances incredible performance and cruising comfort in a very compact package; something that is not very easy in bluewater cruising. That's why it's designed using a foam core to make it lightweight by reducing weight wherever possible. This vessel will most likely never let you down if you want to circumnavigate the bluewater on a high-performance boat that is safe and comfortable.

So if you've been looking for a real sailing catamaran that doubles up as a very comfortable liveaboard sailboat , look no further than the Dolphin 42.

{{boat-info="/boats/catana-50"}}

Regarded as the best built and most stylish cruising multihull, the Catana 50 is a very huge catamaran sailboat. Measuring about 50 feet long with a beam of about 26 feet, this is an amazing catamaran that will test your sailing skills as a single sailor or if you're planning to sail shorthanded.

This boat is designed with a rig that gives you the option of using either a screecher or a self-tending jib. This may seem complex since the sheets are led to winches near each wheel while all other controls lead to a centerline winch that's located in the cockpit. But even with that, this sailboat can be easily tacked once on the course.

This is a real performance-oriented catamaran with efficient hulls and rigs allowing for top speed. This vessel is also designed with a long waterline and a subtle underwater shape at the bow to help in increasing volume while minimizing wave drag. The stern platforms can help in stretching the waterline length while also providing easy access from a dock or a dinghy. The board trunks are also very strong and sturdy to protect the integrity of the hulls if a collision occurs.

In essence, this is a very modern catamaran that's designed to safely make long-distance passages with ease. It is subdued in terms of styling but this doesn't mean that it falls short as far as performance is concerned.

Atlantic 42

{{boat-info="/boats/atlantic-42"}}

Designed in 1993, the A42 has cultivated a legion of fiercely loyal fans thanks to its efficiency and aesthetic. This is the smallest of the Atlantic cruising catamaran line and is hugely popular with sailors thanks to its ease of handling, ocean-going capabilities, and superb use of space. From the forward cockpit, pilothouse to the sleeping cabins, and brilliant galleys everything about this cat is a true classic.

Unlike most catamarans, the Atlantic 42 is designed with a waist-high cockpit that's located forward of the pilothouse just behind the mast. It brings forth a solid construction thanks to the large metal girder-like bearers that run across the bulkheads. This helps the vessel in having the utmost strength, better air circulation under the engine, and a high level of flexibility as far as the size of the engine and its positioning is concerned.

Initially, the boat's style and its outlook were considered conservative but it soon became clear that it is built of high-quality materials and to last. The internal construction of the boat is impressive, to say the least. The exterior looks very beautiful and perhaps much more beautiful than most boats today. Its large aft cabin accommodation is a top drawer while the space separating en suite heads and shower compartments are considered a bonus.

{{boat-info="/boats/fountaine-pajot-bahia-46"}}

If you were to board the French-built Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46, you'll agree that the high-quality of workmanship, layout, and efficient use of space is quite exciting, to say the least. This cat remains very popular among sailors thanks to its easy handling features and incredible performance under the sails. Well, this may not come as a surprise to many of us given that the Fountain Pajot is known for building some of the most remarkable cruising catamarans out there that it can be quite overwhelming to narrow down to a single vessel, but the Bahia 46 simply stands out.

This vessel is designed with hulls that are broader than those of many other catamarans. It's also designed with centerboards and daggerboards that are meant to enhance its performance. These are essential in minimizing draft while ensuring reliability, generous bilge, and in helping to protect the rudders and propellers.

This boat is big enough to manage any type of serious offshore sailing. This is one of the best cruising catamarans for anyone looking for the right vessel for long-distance sailing. This vessel has a very more generous rig than most cruising catamarans, which is essential in enhancing its performance. The six-post Bimini is very strong and clean and can perfectly hold dinghies.

In terms of its look, the Bahia 36 is designed with gorgeous lines with the deck and hulls sculpted with lines that add a touch of elegance to the overall look of an already excellent catamaran sailboat.

Gemini 105MC

{{boat-info="/boats/gemini-105mc"}}

Whether you're looking for a comfortable catamaran vessel to take you for a weekend sailing trip or a long sabbatical vacation on the oceans, the Gemini 105MC is a very satisfactory liveaboard catamaran vessel that offers spacious accommodation, thoughtful design, and a stable cruising platform for anyone who wants to have some good time on the water.

Designed by the legendary Tony Smith, this is somewhat a sailing cottage. Like a land cottage, it is cozy, comfortable, and very safe. This is essentially a 35 feet catamaran that offers great value for any sailing looking for a reasonably-priced catamaran sailboat for the weekend or holiday cruising.

This boat is designed with incredibly slim hulls, which are teardrop-shaped with flat bottoms and smaller wetted surface area. This is to ensure that drag is minimized and to lead to more leeway under sail. Each of the boat's hull is designed with a kick-up centerboard is of great importance in enhancing the vessel's windward pointing capability. This boat also has its rudders raised to enable it to seamlessly cruise in shallow waters where most vessels would otherwise run aground.

The eccentric narrow beam, which measures about 40% of the boat's length, is very different from today's 50%. However, its low center helps in keeping its stable, upright, and of course, safe.

Lagoon 450 F

{{boat-info="/boats/lagoon-450-f"}}

If you're looking for a catamaran sailboat that offers prestige at its peak, look no further than the Lagoon 450. This cat is widely known for offering an all-around comfort without compromising its beauty, spaciousness, class, and elegance. This is an elaborate French catamaran that brings to the table fantastic craftsmanship while leaving nothing to chance.

This is a very safe 45 feet catamaran that's not just comfortable but also very luxurious. The deck layout is centered on an amazing flybridge, which has been redesigned and redefined to offer both the traditional and modern outlook. You can very easily access the bridge, engine controls, steering station in a matter of seconds. As a result, this boat is efficiently designed to give you the ultimate control of almost every situation while on the water.

The spacious and luxurious interior of this boat is worth experiencing. The cabins and saloons are perfectly lit. We're talking about four to six cabins, eight to twelve berths, and up to four bathrooms. In essence, this boat can comfortably sleep eight to twelve people. This boat is designed to offer ultra-modern accommodations and amenities that come with little but amazing touches; all designed to make your life inside the catamaran enjoyable.

{{boat-info="/boats/gunboat-62"}}

An original performance catamaran cruiser from the iconic Gunboat manufacturer, the Gunboat 62 has truly cemented its place as one of the best catamaran sailboats to ever grace the oceans. Honestly speaking, this cat-inspired a whole range of other incredible boats including HH66 Catamaran and the Balance 526.

This is a boat that can perform admirably well in storms with a speed of over 35 knots despite being built using epoxy and E-glass with carbon-fiber structural components. It's designed with a distinct angular outline than most catamaran sailboats of its size and category. This is a vessel that was built for people looking to add more stuff and more gear for their voyages. In other words, you can have all the gear and equipment on this boat and still outperform a racing monohull of the same size.

Thanks to its lightweight feature, this vessel can sail upwind at speeds of over 17 knots and pinch up to 30 degrees. Just for comparison, the Gunboat 62 can tack through 95 degrees and still outperform the best racing monohulls. This boat is designed with a comfortable helm seat that offers 360-degree visibility as well as plenty of storage space, a functional working surface, and a luxurious cabin. Like many performance catamarans, the Gunboat 62 can attain about 20 knots if the conditions are right.

Privilege 615

{{boat-info="/boats/privilege-615"}}

Combining elegance, comfort, and style, the Privilege 615 is a lovely catamaran sailboat that seems to be always ready for a long offshore voyage. The roots of this incredible cat can be traced back to the 1980s when Philippe Jeantot opened up a boat-building company in France. As one of the best productions from the company, the privilege 615 sports a flybridge that comes complete with twin wheels, a sprawling sunbed, and other excellent features that will make your bluewater cruising a breeze.

Whether you want the charter version or a privately-owned version, the Privilege 615 is one of the most versatile catamaran sailboats. Step inside this vessel and you'll instantly notice the quality of the wood finish and the elegance of design. The advanced navigation station is not only ultra-modern but is perfectly stationed at a dedicated corner where you can control everything while still having a conversation with your friends and family.

This boat comes with multiple sleeping configurations to ensure that you and your guests can live aboard the boat for months on end. Although the boat appears like some sort of maze on the inside, you'll easily get used to it when you enter the forward section. That's not all; this boat has gorgeous lines that make the exterior beautiful just like the interior. Its sleek profile, incredible volume, and versatile interior make it one of the best catamaran sailboats out there.

There you have it; these are the best catamaran sailboats out there. It doesn't matter the one you choose, these cats will make your day out on the water and will serve you just right for your offshore voyages or for day sailing along the bays.

8 Best Daysailers Under 21 Feet – Buying Guide

HUNTER 15

SAFFIER SE 33 UD

Chris Riley

It’s a sunny day, and you want to take a spin around the harbor. What better way to do that than launching a daysailer?

These sailboats are traditionally smaller than a cruise ship or yacht, but considerably bigger than kayaks , catamarans, inflatable dinghies , and other smaller boats. Owning an open sailboat shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg, but expect to spend some top dollar.

Here are 8 best daysailers that are 21 feet or under.

CATALINA 16.5

CATALINA 16.5

Let’s kick things off with the Catalina 16.5 sailboat. It might come as a surprise to find a Catalina boat listed among the best daysailers under 20 feet because the name is more known for bigger cruiser yachts. But there are a whole lot of small boats built by Catalina, too.

The Catalina 16.5 is one of the most versatile hand-laminated fiberglass sloops from this designer and can be purchased with the option of a 4-feet 5-inch shoal-draft keel or a centerboard that draws 5-inch with the board up.

Consider choosing the lead-keel option if you want to park it on a mooring or at the dock. It is built to remain stable in such conditions. On the flip side, getting the centerboard version is most suitable if you want to store the boat on a trailer.

Catalina builds all their boats with a self-bailing cockpit, and the 16.5 is no different. It comes with a huge self-bailing cockpit. There is a waterproof hatch and a stowage space forward of the boat. The boat also comes with standard hiking straps and a tiller extension if you want to step on to the side deck for some spray in your face and good visibility forward.

You can get out on the water with around ten grand or more. Check out current listings for Catalina 16.5 .

Teaching your kids or anyone to sail requires a low-maintenance and very steady boat. This is where the Hunter 15 shines. It is a perfect knockabout sailboat that can take a lot of rough beating without breaking, thanks to its high freeboard and fiberglass construction.

The boat has a wide beam that ensures she’s steady no matter what. Crew-weight shifts or sudden crazy jibes that may happen along the way won’t do a thing to this boat. And even the most fearful and unsteady learner won’t fall out of it. It will take a tremendous effort to capsize this beautiful boat, making it one of the best daysailers any daysailer (or intending daysailer) would want to have.

But stability and durability are not the only pluses for the Hunter 15. It has a self-bailing cockpit that allows any water that gets into the boat to exit quickly. There is room enough to comfortably accommodate up to four people.

Getting a durable and high-performance sailboat that will cruise smoothly on the water is one thing; finding convenient storage is an entirely different ballgame. Thankfully, you don’t have to spend extra cash when it comes to this boat. The sailboat can fit into your garage while sitting on a trailer. And here’s another good thing with Hunter 15; you don’t have to worry about varnishing wood afterward.

But perhaps the best part of the Hunter 15 is that it is a very affordable boat. Although sailboats don’t come cheap, you don’t have to break the bank to own one of the beauties.

Prices for a new one range from around $10k, and you can find used ones for less. Check out the listings of Hunter 15 and other equally excellent models of the Hunter sailboat.

PAINE 14

Ready for some painless daysailing? Renowned designer, Chuck Paine, has something classy and beautiful for you. The Paine 14 (obviously named after the designer) is a trailerable sailboat with exceptional performance and purposely styled after the traditional Herresholf 12 1/2 boat, except for its size. Paine 14 is a lot smaller in all aspects, which accounts for its considerable lightness.

It is fitted with a modern spade rudder and fin keel, giving the boat more agility and speed as she sails. And even with a lead-ballast keel almost her total weight, this sweet, small vessel maintains stability at top speed.

But why is a boat with an old-time appeal be listed among the best daysailers? Simple. It is a blend of the classic old and modern performance. Indeed, it is constructed from cold-molded wood with varnished gunnels and transom, but don’t be fooled by that century-old look.

Chuck Paine worked some modern magic into this cute beauty with the inclusion of a carbon mast and an extremely easy way to attach sails to it. Setting up sail is quick and simple, and you can get it done and over with in only a couple of minutes.

The boat can be gaff-rigged, or you can use a Marconi rig. Got a standard car? That’s all you need to trailer this light sailboat, and you are good to go.

LASER

If you want a sailboat that will get your adrenaline pumping and bring out the competitive sailor in you, perhaps you should take a look at the Laser .

The 13-feet 10-inch Laser boat is not included on the list of the best daysailers for nothing. It is raced both as club races and as an international sailing category, featuring in world-class competitions, including the Olympic sailing championships.

However, you don’t have to take part in a competition to enjoy sailing this boat. And you definitely don’t need it for exercising. The Laser is a great choice even if you simply want to enjoy plain smooth sailing just for fun.

The Laser boat has an incredibly lightweight build with fiberglass and a powerful sail. It is an excellent choice for a single cruiser and works well for two adults, too. Be warned, though. It can easily capsize because it is lightweight, but it will also recover just as fast, too!

The boat is easy to transport, launch, and store, thanks to its kick-up rudder. Laser Performance built this model to have a single sail, two-part mast design, with a daggerboard.

This sailboat is very affordable. Prices start from $7k for new boats, and you can find used ones for far less than that. Check here for Laser boat listings .

You can’t go wrong with a design that has been in existence for over five decades and with more than one hundred thousand boats launched since it debuted in Southern California. The Hobie 16 is a long-lasting design that has stood the test of time and attracts quite a following.

This sailboat weighs only 320 pounds, so it is conveniently trailerable. It has ample room to accommodate a crew of four without straining it. The hulks are built from asymmetric fiberglass sandwich and come with kick-up rudders. This gives you the option of sailing all the way to the beach.

The Hobie 16 is designed to have great speed, thanks to its abundant high-speed gear. But that’s not all. It is also equipped with a spinnaker, a trailer, and a douse kit. The main and jib offer a wide sail area of more than 200 square feet.

Both adults and kids will enjoy having lots of fun in this spacious sailboat, especially in the summer. Little wonder it is one of the very best daysailers available on the market.

The Hobie 16 is a high-performance boat with starting prices for new ones in the $12K range. You can find used ones at a little less. But if you want a simpler, smaller, and more affordable option, take a look at the Hobie Cat Wave . It is not a high-performance design, but it offers loads of fun, too. It comes with roto-molded hulls and fitted with a boomless mainsail. This smaller version costs almost half the price of the 16’s, which is a pretty good bargain.

NORSEBOAT 17.5

NORSEBOAT 17.5

Looking for one of the best daysailers that will stand out from any crowd? The Norseboat 17.5 might just be the perfect sailboat for you. Dubbed as the “Swiss Army Knife of Boats,” this one-of-a-kind sailboat can be sailed or rowed.

But wouldn’t it take a lot of effort to row this boat? No. Not with the boat’s sheer. The fiberglass hull has lots of sheer – a deliberate and apt design to make rowing easy-breezy. So, even if there’s no wind, you can still have fun rowing while getting some exercise in the process. And if the wind is strong enough, you can relax and let the jib and mainsail do their thing.

The Norseboat 17.5 is the perfect choice for daysailers searching for a high-performance boat that comes with beautiful traditional lines. But even if you are a sea kayaker who is looking to move up, or a cruising sailor seeking to downsize a bit, you’ll find this legendary pedigree to be a good fit for you.

Some of its features include a fully battened mainsail, pivoting carbon mast, shallow draft, furling headsail, and a signature curved headboard. The lightweight boat comes with two rowing stations and performs excellently well, whether wind-powered or rowed. Plus, it has plenty of room to stow stuff.

The boat’s light weight makes transportation easy. All you need is a mid-sized car, and you can easily tow it. Storage is equally hassle-free, as the sailboat can fit into any standard garage.

FAREAST 18

Traditional daysailers are small sailboats that you can take for a quick spin around the harbor. They lack accommodation primarily because they are not designed for spending the night (it’s even in the name!). But all that has changed over the years, and that distinction is almost non-existent with modern designs such as the Fareast 18 .

The boat is a Simonis Voogd design with incredibly high performance, high speed, low maintenance, and comes at a comparatively affordable price. The mainsail has a fully battened square-top and an asymmetrical spinnaker. This is an excellent choice for buoy racing with enough room for a crew of six to compete.

While you typically will not spend the night in a daysailer, there’s nothing wrong with taking a short break below deck. The boat can comfortably sleep up to three just in case you decide to spend the night on the water.

Fareast 18 design features a foam-core hull/vacuum-infused fiberglass, a carbon-structured contemporary bulb keel, and vacuum-infused foils. This high-tech boat is small enough to be rigged and launched by a single sailor.

Even with only one foot of water, this boat will float with the keel retracted and the rudder off. And it is quite easy to trailer this boat.

If you are in the market for a top-class daysailer, you might as well take a look at the Saffier Se 33 UD . Hennevanger brothers, the designers, threw in a lot of know-how and investment to bring this dream boat to reality. The production facility shows in the vacuum-infused build and quality finish of the boat.

Saffier has a collection of models that range between 21 feet and 37 feet, with each boat thoroughly tested to ensure seaworthiness. Considering the size of these boats, one will naturally assume they will be difficult to sail. But that’s not the case with these boats. Even the largest models can be sailed single-handedly and quite easily.

The Se 33 UD was launched in 2014 and done a sporty design. It sails smoothly in all weather conditions, thanks to its solid sprayhood. The sailboat features a practical self-draining cockpit to expel any water that gets into the boat. Included in the cockpit are a folding transform and two-meter benches. The boat is spacious enough for a crew of four, and you can even take a quick nap below.

This top-class boat is an excellent choice if you have deep pockets. Starting prices are in the range of $150k for new boats. You can also check out the new Se 27 model if you want something that is serious fun. The new models can clock up to 20 knots.

For more on pricing, you can check out listings on these boats.

How to Choose the Best Daysailers – Buying Guide

day sailing catamaran

With well over a hundred different daysailers on the market, it can be daunting to pick just one. Here’s what to look for when deciding on which open sailboat to buy for yourself or family use.

Ease of Sail

How a boat behaves when the wind blows up can make it easy or difficult to sail. A lot of modern sailboats are incredibly fast and are great for racing, but can be quite tricky to handle.

You want to look for an open boat that is tamer and stable. This is the perfect choice for a family day sailing boat, especially if you want to encourage kids to learn to sail. Look for a boat that is heavy enough to remain stable regardless of the crew’s acrobatics. It should be easy to rig, launch, and sail, even by a single person.

Reliability

While it is okay to take proper care of your boat, it is equally important to choose a boat that is easy to maintain. Go for boats with hulls designed to a beating without breaking down. Pay attention to the sails, too. Select one with tough sails that won’t easily blow out of shape after just one season of sailing.

Choose a Daysailer with Safety Features

Whether you will be sailing alone or with your family, safety should come first. Pick a boat that can cope with trouble in any condition or weather, and both on rivers or open waters. Look for a sailboat with positive foam floatation. Even if the hull gets filled with water or is punctured, the boat shouldn’t sink.

But because you cannot completely rule out manufacturing errors, even the best daysailers with safety designs can still capsize. However, you should look out for one with a “self-rescue” feature. In other words, choose a boat that rides very high even when it capsizes, so that the weight of her crew will quickly get her to recover without external help.

High Performance

Safety and stability are great, but that shouldn’t translate to a dull boat. You want a sailboat that provides safety as much as it offers some level of fun and exciting challenge even with your family on board.

Ample Space

Daysailers are typically small sailboats, but they should provide enough room to suit your purpose. Whether you want to sail with your family or a few friends, choose a boat that can comfortably accommodate the entire crew.

While not a requirement, a few modern designs include overnight abilities. Consider choosing these types if you spend a lot of time in the open water, even if you are primarily using an open daysailer. You never know when you will be tempted to spend the night cruising in the open water.

These hulls provide stability and reduce drag, enabling higher speeds. Catamarans are used for sailing , cruising , and racing .

The design allows for a spacious interior layout, making it ideal for leisure activities or living aboard. One advantage of a catamaran is its shallow draft , which allows for navigation in shallower waters . When sailing, it’s crucial to have a good grasp of the components like the mast , sails , rigging , and helm . Learning how to trim the sails and adjust the rigging optimizes performance. Maneuvering the catamaran, including tacking and jibing , controls direction and speed.

Safety is paramount, so having a clear understanding of safety procedures and possessing the necessary equipment is essential. With a thorough understanding of the basics, you can confidently enjoy the unique sailing experience a catamaran offers.

What is a Catamaran?

A catamaran, also known as a cat , is a type of boat with two parallel hulls connected by a deck. It is specifically designed to prioritize stability, achieved through a wider base and weight distribution. Catamarans are renowned for their spaciousness and maneuverability , making them a popular choice for sailing and cruising enthusiasts.

One notable advantage of a catamaran is its ability to achieve higher speeds compared to monohulls . This can be attributed to the wide hulls, which result in less drag and enable faster and smoother sailing experiences. The dual hull design enhances stability , reducing the likelihood of rolling or capsizing , particularly in rough waters.

Catamarans also offer a significant advantage in terms of living space and comfort . Thanks to the presence of two separate hulls, these boats can accommodate cabins , lounges , and various amenities. As a result, catamarans are considered ideal for long-distance cruising or liveaboard experiences , providing ample room for relaxation and enjoyment .

When it comes to sailing performance, catamarans excel in upwind capabilities and have the ability to sail closer to the wind compared to monohulls. They are easier to maneuver and require less effort to handle, making them an excellent choice even for beginners embarking on their sailing journey .

How is a Catamaran Different from a Monohull?

Catamarans have greater stability than monohulls due to their wider beam and two hulls. This stability reduces tipping and rolling in rough seas.

Compared to monohulls , catamarans have a shallower draft, allowing them to navigate in shallow waters and anchor closer to the shore.

Catamarans provide more interior space with their wider beam, resulting in larger cabins, living areas, and storage compartments.

Catamarans are known for their speed. The twin hull design reduces drag, enabling them to sail faster than monohulls , particularly in light winds.

In terms of sailing motion, catamarans have a flatter and more stable movement, offering increased comfort for those prone to seasickness. They also have better maneuverability and can sail closer to the wind compared to monohulls .

Pro-tip: If you desire a spacious, stable, and fast sailing experience, a catamaran is an excellent choice. Its unique design provides comfort and performance, making it a popular option for cruising and long-distance sailing.

Safety Equipment and Checks

When sailing a catamaran, it is essential to prioritize safety. It is important to follow these steps for safety equipment and checks:

  • First and foremost, inspect the life jackets to ensure they are in good condition and functioning properly.
  • Take the time to check the throwable flotation devices and ensure they are readily available and in working order.
  • Verify that the catamaran has a properly installed fire extinguisher, which is crucial in case of any fire emergencies.
  • Make sure that distress signals, such as flares or emergency signaling devices, are present and easily accessible.
  • It is vital to inspect and test the bilge pump to make sure it is functioning correctly and can effectively remove any water from the boat.
  • Check the navigation lights to ensure they are properly functioning, as they are essential for visibility during nighttime or low-light conditions.
  • Verify the availability and condition of a sound signaling device, such as a horn or whistle , which can alert others in case of emergencies.
  • Ensure that the catamaran is equipped with a VHF radio or other communication devices for effective communication during emergencies.
  • Inspect the anchor and anchor line to ensure their good condition, as they are crucial for securing the catamaran in place.
  • Check the availability and condition of navigation charts and a compass, which are essential for proper navigation and orientation.

Pro-tip: It is highly recommended to regularly inspect and maintain all safety equipment to ensure they always work properly. Performing safety checks before every sailing trip is crucial to ensure the well-being and safety of everyone onboard.

Understanding Wind and Weather Conditions

Understanding wind and weather conditions is essential when sailing a catamaran. It is crucial to consider wind direction, wind strength, and current weather conditions in order to plan your sail effectively and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Having a good understanding of wind direction is vital while sailing. By adjusting your sails accordingly, you can maximize the power and efficiency of your catamaran. Knowing the strength of the wind can help you determine the appropriate sail trim and make adjustments for optimal performance .

Weather conditions play a critical role in ensuring safety while sailing. It is important to check weather forecasts before setting sail and to remain aware of potential changes in weather patterns. Understanding the possibility of storms, strong winds, or heavy seas allows you to make informed decisions on when it is safe to sail and when it is best to stay ashore.

By understanding wind and weather conditions, you can effectively plan your sail, adjust your sails for optimal performance, and ensure the safety of yourself and your crew. Continuously monitoring and assessing these conditions throughout your sailing journey allows for well-informed decisions and contributes to a successful and memorable experience on your catamaran.

From controlling the direction of your catamaran to optimizing your sail position, this section has got you covered with practical tips that will enhance your sailing skills. So, hop on board and let’s embark on a thrilling sailing adventure !

Steering and Maneuvering

When steering and maneuvering a catamaran, it is important to keep in mind the following techniques:

  • Use the tiller or steering wheel to control the direction of the catamaran. Push the tiller away from you to turn the catamaran to starboard (right), and pull the tiller towards you to turn the catamaran to port (left).
  • Work closely with the crew and communicate clearly to ensure smooth maneuvering. Assign specific roles and responsibilities to each crew member, such as trimming the sails or adjusting the daggerboards .
  • Adjust the sails accordingly to optimize the catamaran's performance. Trim in the mainsail and jib to generate more power and speed, or ease the sails to reduce power in strong winds.
  • Pay attention to the catamaran's speed and steer accordingly. A faster catamaran may require more precise and proactive steering to maintain control.
  • Practice tacking and jibing techniques to change direction smoothly. Tacking involves turning the bow of the catamaran through the wind, while jibing involves turning the stern of the catamaran through the wind. Always be mindful of the wind direction and adjust your maneuvering accordingly.

By mastering these techniques, you'll be able to navigate your catamaran with confidence and precision.

Sail Trim and Adjustment

For optimal performance and stability of a catamaran, sail trim and adjustment are essential. Follow these steps to ensure proper sail trim:

  • Begin by checking the telltales of the main sail to ensure smooth flow without any fluttering or stalling.
  • Next, focus on the jib or headsail and adjust the sheet tension to achieve proper trim and generate lift.
  • Paying attention to the traveler position is crucial. Move it accordingly to control the boom angle and sail shape based on wind conditions.
  • Adjust the halyard tension to prevent any sagging or fluttering.
  • Continuously monitor and adjust the tension in control lines, such as the jib sheet and mainsheet , to achieve the desired sail shape and balance.
  • While sailing, constantly assess the sail trim. Observe the telltales, listen to the wind, and take note of any changes in speed. Fine-tune the trim for optimal performance and control.

By consistently adjusting sail trim based on changing conditions, you’ll ensure a pleasurable and efficient catamaran sailing experience.

Tacking and Jibing

Sailing a catamaran requires a good understanding of the techniques for tacking and jibing . Here are the steps to master these maneuvers:

  • To change direction when the wind shifts, turn the helm or the wheel away from the wind.
  • Release the jib sheet and let the jib sail luff as the bow of the catamaran passes through the wind.
  • Trim in the jib sheet on the new tack to regain speed and control.
  • Ease out the mainsail sheet and move the boom to the opposite side of the catamaran.
  • Steer the catamaran downwind to swing the mainsail across the boat.
  • Switch the mainsail sheet to the new side and trim it in to stabilize the sail as the mainsail crosses over.

Pro-tip: It is advisable to practice tacking and jibing in light winds before attempting these maneuvers in stronger conditions. This will help build confidence and develop a solid understanding of the catamaran’s handling characteristics.

Understanding Points of Sail

To gain a comprehensive comprehension of Understanding Points of Sail , it is important to acknowledge the various angles at which a sailboat can navigate in relation to the wind.

The initial point of sail is referred to as the “no-sail zone,” during which the wind is directly facing the boat’s front, making it impossible for the sails to catch the wind.

Subsequently, we have the “close-hauled” or “upwind” point of sail, where the boat skillfully sails as close to the wind as possible without stalling. In this scenario, the sails are meticulously adjusted to create lift and propel the boat forward.

Moving on, the “close reach” point of sail occurs when the boat is slightly angled away from the wind, enabling the sails to fill and generate power.

As for the “beam reach” point of sail, the boat is positioned at a right angle to the wind, causing the wind to blow directly onto the side of the sails. This results in the boat achieving the desired speed and momentum.

On the other hand, the “broad reach” point of sail sees the boat sailing at an angle away from the wind, which allows the sails to fill more and generate even greater speed.

We have the “downwind” or “running” point of sail, where the boat sails directly with the wind coming from behind. To ensure an efficient catch of the wind, the sails are let out as far as possible in this scenario.

Acquiring a solid understanding of points of sail is paramount when it comes to taking control of the direction and speed of a catamaran, ultimately maximizing its performance. By skillfully adjusting the sails and steering according to the various points of sail, sailors are able to effectively navigate their catamarans, ensuring a smooth and efficient sailing experience.

By mastering the skills of chart reading and course planning, you can confidently and safely navigate your catamaran, maximizing your enjoyment of the sailing experience.

Rules of the Road and Right-of-Way

To sail a catamaran safely and avoid collisions, it’s crucial to understand the Rules of the Road and Right-of-Way .

  • Sailboats fall under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) , which provide guidelines for preventing accidents in various situations.
  • According to the Rules of the Road , when two sailboats approach each other on different tacks, the boat on the starboard tack has the Right-of-Way and the boat on the port tack must keep clear.
  • When a sailboat approaches a power-driven vessel, the sailboat must yield and keep clear of the power-driven vessel’s path.
  • When overtaking another sailboat, the overtaking boat is responsible for keeping clear and avoiding a collision.
  • It’s important to understand and follow these Rules of the Road and Right-of-Way to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on the water.

I was sailing my catamaran on a sunny day when I spotted another sailboat coming towards me. Realizing we were on a collision course, I acted quickly and adjusted my course to give way to the other sailboat, which was on the starboard tack. By following the Rules of the Road and Right-of-Way , we avoided a potentially dangerous situation and continued enjoying our day on the water. This experience highlights the importance of sailors being knowledgeable about the Rules of the Road and Right-of-Way for a safe and enjoyable sailing experience.

Capsize and Righting a Catamaran

Capsize and righting a catamaran can be challenging, but with knowledge and techniques, you can recover safely. When facing a catamaran capsize, follow these steps to ensure a successful recovery:

1. Stay calm and assess the situation. It’s important to maintain a level-headed approach.

2. Ensure everyone onboard wears a life jacket and is accounted for. Safety should always be a priority.

3. Communicate with your crew to determine the best approach for righting the catamaran. Teamwork and coordination are crucial at this stage.

4. Release and secure the sails to prevent further problems. This will help minimize any potential damage.

5. Work together as a team to shift the crew’s weight towards the side of the catamaran that needs lifting. Distributing the weight properly is essential.

6. Utilize weight distribution and leverage to gradually lift the capsized catamaran. It’s important to take this process one step at a time.

7. Continue applying steady pressure until the catamaran is fully righted. Persistence is key during this stage.

8. Check the boat for damages or water ingress and address them accordingly. Taking care of any issues promptly is crucial for safety.

9. Retrieve any lost belongings or equipment that may have fallen overboard during the capsize.

10. Restart the sail and ensure proper stability. Confirm that everything is in order before resuming your sailing adventure.

By following these steps and working together, you can successfully recover from a catamaran capsize and continue enjoying your sailing adventure.

Dealing with Strong Winds and Heavy Seas

Dealing with strong winds and heavy seas while sailing a catamaran can be a challenging task. With the right techniques and precautions, it can be managed effectively. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind:

1. Maintain a steady course: It is crucial to hold the helm firmly and adjust the sails to maintain balance and control in the face of strong winds and heavy seas .

2. Reef the sails: When the winds become too powerful, it is important to reduce the sail area exposed to the wind by reefing the sails. This technique helps in controlling the boat’s speed and stability. Familiarize yourself with the specific catamaran’s reefing technique beforehand.

3. Adjust the daggerboards: Daggerboards are retractable keels that play a vital role in providing stability and preventing tipping over in strong winds . Adjusting the daggerboards to the appropriate depth is important to maintain balance and control in challenging conditions.

4. Monitor the sea state: Pay close attention to the waves and their direction. Anticipating changes in the swell and taking appropriate action, such as avoiding broadside hits and angling the boat into the waves, ensures a smoother and more comfortable ride.

5. Use safety equipment: It is imperative to always have necessary safety equipment onboard, including life jackets, flares, and a tethering system. When challenging conditions arise, wearing a safety harness is essential to prevent falling overboard.

By following these techniques and taking proper precautions, you can effectively deal with strong winds and heavy seas while sailing a catamaran . Remember, experience and practice are crucial in safely and confidently handling challenging conditions.

What Is a Trimaran?

day sailing catamaran

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams.

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s.

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. These sailboats draw their versatility from their lightweight design, making them faster and easier to handle at sea when compared to single-hulled boats (monohulls). Additionally, the three hulls also contribute to better stability, making it very hard to capsize (although more likely than a cat according to this study)

Trimarans come in various sizes, and some can be as small as 19 feet (5.8 meters) in length, while others go up to 60 feet (18meters). They’re also used for different purposes. Most trimarans are used for racing and recreational purposes, although some units are still used as ferries.

As with all things, to find out which is the best we need to understand what it will be used for. There is a big difference in requirements between a boat used for day sailing compared to offshore around the world sailing.

The list below highlights the best trimarans for different purposes.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Between a Sailboat or Catamaran for Your Sailing Adventures

C hoosing between a sailboat and a catamaran for your sailing adventures is a significant decision that depends on various factors, including your sailing preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. Here's an ultimate guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Sailing Experience:

  • Sailboats: Typically require more skill and experience to handle, especially in adverse weather conditions. Ideal for sailors who enjoy the traditional feel of sailing and are willing to invest time in learning and mastering the art.
  • Catamarans: Easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners. The dual-hull design provides stability, reducing the learning curve for those new to sailing.

2. Space and Comfort:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a narrower beam and less living space. However, some sailboats may offer comfortable cabins and amenities.
  • Catamarans: Wider beam creates more living space. Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious saloons, and expansive deck areas, providing a more comfortable living experience.

3. Stability:

  • Sailboats: Monohulls can heel (lean) while sailing, which some sailors enjoy for the thrill but can be discomforting for others.
  • Catamarans: Greater stability due to the dual hulls, providing a more level sailing experience. Reduced heeling makes catamarans suitable for those prone to seasickness.

4. Performance:

  • Sailboats: Known for their upwind performance and ability to sail close to the wind. Some sailors appreciate the challenge of optimizing sail trim for efficiency.
  • Catamarans: Faster on a reach and downwind due to their wide beam. However, they may not point as high into the wind as monohulls.
  • Sailboats: Typically have a deeper draft, limiting access to shallow anchorages and requiring deeper marina berths.
  • Catamarans: Shallow draft allows access to shallower waters and secluded anchorages, providing more flexibility in cruising destinations.
  • Sailboats: Generally more affordable upfront, with a wide range of options available to fit different budgets.
  • Catamarans: Often more expensive upfront due to their size and design. However, maintenance costs may be comparable or even lower in some cases.

7. Mooring and Docking:

  • Sailboats: Easier to find slips and moorings in marinas designed for monohulls.
  • Catamarans: Require wider slips and may have limited availability in certain marinas, especially in crowded anchorages.

8. Intended Use:

  • Sailboats: Ideal for traditional sailors who enjoy the art of sailing, racing enthusiasts, or those on a tighter budget.
  • Catamarans: Suited for those prioritizing comfort, stability, and spacious living areas, especially for long-term cruising and chartering.

9. Resale Value:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a more established resale market, with a wider range of buyers.
  • Catamarans: Growing in popularity, and well-maintained catamarans often retain their value.

10. Personal Preference:

  • Consider your personal preferences, the type of sailing you plan to do, and the kind of lifestyle you want aboard your vessel.

In conclusion, both sailboats and catamarans have their advantages and disadvantages. Your decision should be based on your individual preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. If possible, charter both types of vessels to experience firsthand how they handle and to help make a more informed decision based on your own preferences and needs.

I think this was one of the best things we did in Athens - the crew is great - friendly , wants only your happiness and that you enjoy your time - water is a great swim and I will emphasize on the quality of food - we have been picked up by a private car on time and enjoyed each and every moment of it

Look to my images if your skipper is the one doing the BBQ in the photo so you will have a blast

Thank you sailing Athens

I could not recommend this company and trip more! It was the best day! We did the morning trip with three kids 8, 7 and 3. I was a little worried about safety and annoying the other guests (and staff!) but we had great people to go with and became friends, chatting and laughing! Mike and Ari were incredible and their service was amazing! They provided towels and drinks through out the day and the food was exceptional. So much and we got to see it being cooked. Mike stopped a few times, just enough for us to have a few swims and enjoy the scenery. They had loads of information for us too which was great...!!

So professional and relaxed from start to finish. Pick up and return to anyplace in Athens. No more than 10 guest per cruise. Plenty to drink and fantastic food. Crew was delightful. First rate operation and extremely enjoyable experience.

This cruise was absolutely breathtaking. We met fun people, the crew was super friendly, and the food was delicious. The boat was clean, there were numerous places to relax, and the water was so clear that it made swimming an absolute dream. We highly recommend this cruise since it's well worth your money.

Thoroughly recommend the sunset sailing cruise to anyone who visits Athens. Mike and Aris were wonderful! The food was delicious and the swim stops were exceptional. No suggestions for improvement, it was a perfect day. Thanks guys ?

118 Wallypower superyacht running

Iconic yachts: 118 WallyPower

The 118 WallyPower remains as striking today as when it was first launched in August 2003. The futuristic lines are reminiscent of a Stealth bomber, and it’s easy to imagine Darth Vader at the controls, skimming over the waves. This boat still generates discussion, still turns heads, still mesmerises.

Luca Bassani , founder of Wally, is so in love with the 118 WallyPower that once a year he goes out on the tender, switches off the engine and instructs the crew to surge past him at top speed. ‘The motion is not actually the speed; the motion is first of all the shape of the boat and the fact that you don’t hear anything. It’s just this great, beautiful sheet passing by at high speed with the only sound a light whistle.’ He makes a hissing sound between his teeth and laughs. ‘Another thing I like is that from the outside, when the boat is anchored in a bay, you really don’t see it… the sage colour blends and changes with the colour of the coast, the rocks and the green of the water.’

Bassani took the plunge from sailboat to motor yacht design when he noticed a 15 to 20 per cent increase in the open power boat market over ten years. The 118 WallyPower took four years to develop. He had a client in mind but no contract, but this was enough to give him the impetus to move forward without the constraints of working within a client’s needs. The objective was to create a very fast boat perfect for short Mediterranean day cruises and able to maintain high speeds even in rough seas. The solution was a deep V hull which, with the shape of the bow and the use of interceptors, allows the boat to pierce the waves comfortably, even at high speeds. ‘Extensive research and tank testing resulted in a hull design different and better than any other,’ he claims. ‘Like our sailboats, the design is an evolution of all our experience. For us the ride of the hull is the key to our sales.’

The new hull design will be used for all the range, starting with the tender. ‘It is really fantastic. If weather conditions allow, you would rather cruise at 60 knots, but in reasonable conditions, at 40 knots you can do all the missions you have to do.’

After the hull, Bassani is most satisfied with the forward ‘liveable’ cockpit of the 118 WallyPower. ‘When I say liveable I’m talking about quality of life aboard. This foredeck feels as if you are on a sailboat, not a power boat, which I like a lot.’ He is also pleased with the water jet propulsion: ‘The noise is very low – no vibration, fantastic manoeuvrability, no problem with draught. We see only advantages.’ And he believes carbon fibre is essential for cutting through the waves: ‘You need a very rigid, light hull. You don’t use carbon fibre for the bottom of the hull because it would become too brittle, but the structure inside has to be carbon.’

The 118 WallyPower’s gas turbines deliver 17,000hp, and diesel is used for manoeuvring and cruising at night at up to 10 knots. ‘With the two diesels you have a great range – 1,800 miles – while if you went with the gas turbines at 40 to 60 knots the range is 400 to 500 miles, no more.’ This brings up the subject of sustainable power: ‘We are studying a new concept that will substantially improve the sustainability of powerboats,’ says Bassani.

118 WallyPower, a stealthy superyacht for billionaire owners..

118 wallypower yacht

The 118 WallyPower is a 36 m superyacht built by the famous Wally shipyard in the 2000s. With its futuristic military inspired look and its 3 large gas turbines, she was a UFO when she was launched.

Chloé Torterat

A futuristic construction

The 118 WallyPower is the largest motor yacht produced by the famous Monegasque shipyard Wally Yachts . It was built in the early 2000's according to the drawings of Luca Bassani for a client who wanted a motor yacht inspired by the 27 m sloop built by the shipyard and with the Argentinean naval architect Frers, called Tiketitan.

118 wallypower yacht

Luca Bassani Antivari, founder of Wally and an accomplished former sailor is passionate about sailing. But through this project of a 36 m superyacht, he will launch the Wallytender, then the 118 WallyPower.

Its angular lines associated with the glass superstructure are reminiscent of a stealth ship. The result is a sense of power and speed . In fact, Wally's founder describes it as ".. a stealth bomber with a sailboat bow, Formula One-style air intakes and a stripped-down Asian-inspired interior design."

118 wallypower yacht

An exceptional motorization

The engines - i.e. 3 gas turbines of 5?600 CH each - develop a total of 16?800 CH (12?500 kW). They power a Rolls-Royce Kamewa jet-type transmission consisting of 2 steerable side jets and a fixed central jet. Two 370 HP (280 kW) Cummins diesel engines can take over from the turbines. In the first configuration, the 118 WallyPower will reach more than 60 knots (110 km/h), but only 9 knots in the second version, which will be preferred for long distance manoeuvres.

118 wallypower yacht

State-of-the-art construction

The hull of the 118 WallyPower is the result of an extensive research and development program that included tests in the hull tank in Gothenburg, Sweden and in the wind tunnel at Ferrari in Maranello, Italy . Stability at high speed is guaranteed by a deep V-shaped hull (22° degrees) and a wave piercing straight bow. The air intakes of the gas turbines have been optimized to minimize vibration and exhaust backflow on deck and into the hull. The hull conceals a tender garage.

118 wallypower yacht

The bottom of the hull is constructed of monolithic fibreglass. The dead works with a hybrid of balsa sandwich and fiberglass/carbon. The deck is made of Nomex (Kevlar honeycomb)/carbon. The superstructure of the deck is made of a carbon frame on which glass panels are glued. Inside, part of the interior layout is made of carbon to reduce weight. The dark green metallic paint changes with the reflections of the changing lights and landscape. On the deck, in the cockpit, the bulwarks tilt to enjoy an incredible view of the sea from the saloon but also to take advantage of the large outside space.

118 wallypower yacht

A luxurious and uncluttered layout

Inside, on the main deck, the open space offers 3 distinct areas, from bow to stern: the helm station, the raised dining/meeting area and the large saloon below, which opens onto the outside without a break in continuity, introducing the concept of the inside-outside living area. A 360° view is available from the dining area thanks to the raised floor. Under the dining table - which seats 8 people - long rectangular glazing brings light to the lower floor. This keeps the dining area at the front away from the heat of the engines. The boat also has 6 plasma screen televisions.

118 wallypower yacht

Below deck, the owner's cabin is located forward and has a deck porthole for light. There is a large double bed, a private bathroom and a large dressing room. Two guest cabins have a queen-size bed, a dressing room and a bathroom.

The kitchen (with the pantry) includes an oven, stove, television and several refrigerators.

118 wallypower yacht

A millionaire's boat

The price of the 118 Wallypower is $33 million for the triple gas turbine version, or $22 million for the dual diesel engines. Its range is 1800 miles at 9 knots or 300 miles at 60 knots. Finally, its fuel tank has a capacity of 22 tons.

At the maximum speed of 60 knots, the gas turbine uses 58 litres of fuel per mile, or 3?500 litres per hour. For example, to travel from Cannes to Saint-Tropez and back at 50 knots, it takes 90 minutes for 6?000 to get from Cannes to Saint-Tropez and back, using dépensé?! The WallyPower 118 weighs 95 tons and can accommodate 6 crew members and 6 guests on board.

Prestigious awards

The 118 WallyPower won the MYDA, Millennium Yacht Design Award, organised by Seatec (the Carrarafiere sailing and navigation technology trade fair) for "Design for the third millennium". It was the only boat in the architecture and design exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in 2004/2005), for the exhibition "Glamour : Fabricating Affluence".

World’s coolest boats: Wallypower 118 looks like Darth Vader’s superyacht

  • Superyachts
  • Top stories

Each month we pick out an iconic boat that can lay claim to the title of world’s coolest boat. This month, we take a closer look at the 118 Wallypower.

Michael Bay’s 2005 sci-fi thriller movie The Island was about a group of people isolated in a compound, they’re told, due to nuclear fallout.

As the film progresses, we learn that these people are in fact clones of wealthy individuals, created for organ-harvesting should it ever be needed.

Because they are clones, they experience dreams based on lives they have not lived. One of them is a clone of a famous yacht designer, and so his dreams are of superyachts .

The studio needed the most dramatic, the most outstanding, the most iconic superyacht on the water to illustrate this, and so, of course, they chose the Wallypower 118.

The brainchild of Luca Bassani, heir to a Milanese lighting fortune and owner of Monaco-based Wally Yachts , it was the first foray into large motor yachts for his yard, noted up until then for building edgy sailboat designs and being named after the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character, Wally Gator (a favourite of his young son).

The most outstanding feature of this sensational beast is the styling. At 118ft long and completely unique, it appears to have been constructed using origami. The hull is carbon fibre and GRP composite, and the superstructure is triple-laminated tinted glass on a carbon frame.

And if that’s not wacky enough, everything on the exterior of the yacht, from the cleats to the tables to the seating, is concealed – rising out of the deck when required. If Darth Vader had a superyacht, it would look like this.

Movie-star styling and minimal-luxe interiors combine to create the ultimate superyacht

Such an outstanding design deserves supreme performance, so the pair of 370hp diesel engines, producing a top speed of 9 knots, appears initially underwhelming. But fear not, these are merely an amuse-bouche, fitted only to manoeuvre the boat out of the harbour.

Once at sea the captain is free to light up the three Vericor TF50 gas turbines, unleashing over 16,800hp through three water jets (two steerable, one fixed) and propelling this incredible machine past 60 knots, according to the manufacturer.

Although conceived as a production yacht, reportedly only one was ever built. The price at the time? An impressive £17 million.

Wallypower 118

  • By Dennis Caprio
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

If Wallygator , the first of Luca Bassani’s brainchildren, was a breath of fresh air when it appeared on the sailing scene in the waning years of the last century, the Wallypower 118 motoryacht is a full gale. On the outside, she combines elements of Marcello Gandini’s masterpiece Lamborghini Countach of the middle 1980s and the U.S. Air Force Stealth Fighter. On the inside, she reinforces Bassani’s predilection for simple, open spaces defined by areas of use, instead of bulkheads. Bassani, il padrone of Wally Yachts, didn’t design the 118, but his signature is all over it.

Like the Countach and the Stealth Fighter, this 118-foot speedster is a riot of hard edges, straight lines and serious functionality. Her extraordinary elegance and simplicity suggest a child of 10 could have produced her topsides and house, but these elements are the work of modern artists set free from the shackles of traditional thinking about how boats should look.

As far as I can tell from the drawings, only one of the design elements above the waterline exists purely for its own sake. Everything else serves a purpose. The sheerline in profile is reversed, higher amidships than at either end. This is typical of high-performance boats and had its origin in an attempt to make the topsides aerodynamic. The Wally’s recessed deck kills that theory, so we have to regard the reverse sheer as a styling exercise that places the 118 in the high-performance category.

We could easily dismiss the prominent side pods as a gimmick, mostly because we’re so used to seeing fake scoops and vents on modern automobiles and boats. These, however, are real. They draw, via the forward opening, mega-volumes of fresh air to the gas turbine engines, and they house the exhaust system. The top section of each pod (above deck height) hinges outboard to become a teak-paved boarding platform served by a ladder/gangplank that appears to slide out of the pod.

As a styling device, the side pods, combined with the rise of the chine from amidships forward, carve the massive topsides area into manageable sections, letting us process her statement at our leisure instead of forcing us to absorb the whole in one glance. The design team’s confidence in the 118’s dramatic statement is illustrated by the choice of color. The designers rendered her in titanium gray on the topsides and charcoal gray for the house, proudly showing exactly how this sculpture defines itself in shadows and highlights. She may be the only large powerboat in the hyper-performance class that doesn’t need “oh boy” murals on her topsides.

Flat planes at various angles to one another form a deckhouse that reminds me of the Stealth Fighter. Claudio Lazzarini, of the Lazzarini & Pickering design firm, calls it a crystal prism. The entire structure is made of flat transparent panels-flat to permit the use of power-operated doors and windows, and to prevent the distorted view that often comes with transparent curvatures. This crystal prism, the designers said, creates in the saloon the relaxed atmosphere of a cockpit. Tinting the structure filters ultraviolet rays, keeps the interior from being too bright and too hot, and contributes to the yacht’s purposeful look. Decks of natural-finish teak color-a touch of the early 20th century on an otherwise futuristic concept-ease the extreme tension generated by her sharp edges and no-nonsense demeanor.

Teak planes, vertical and horizontal, inside the crystal prism divide the area into a landscape of functions, or islands in a sea of teak. Right abaft the helm, a sliding teak table seats 14 adults in a formal or a casual setting. Among the many islands, one contains a single seat for reading or working at a computer housed in a nearby cabinet. Beneath this chair is a small, drawer-style refrigerator most people would stock with mineral water, soft drinks and beer. Another island lets you stretch out to watch the TV perched atop an end table, which also contains a stereo.

“The navigation area,” Carl Pickering said, “is more similar to a flight deck than its usual nautical equivalent and can be used as an office or dining area, thanks to sliding tables.”

Lazzarini & Pickering continue the system of teak planes belowdecks to create the corridors and staterooms, though details about the area weren’t available. Outside, the teak theme appears in the after cockpit and a playpen on the foredeck. Here, we find picnic tables that retract flush with the deck, forming a sunbathing area.

The 118’s hull is narrow monohull with training wheels. It has its roots in high-speed naval craft and, as far as I can determine from the renderings, marries an extremely fine entry to an inverted W-shape planing surface. The design team volunteered only that the bow sections reduce vertical accelerations by 50 percent. This means a relatively smooth ride in a seaway. Her fine entry will split the waves, but the bow sections will gain buoyancy as the high chines dig into the water. By this time, most of the energy will have dissipated, so the crew won’t get slammed into the cabin sole. If I were drawing this bottom, I’d make the chine area a tunnel of something close to a semicircle. Ridding the bottom of flat surfaces reduces pounding. On the other hand, a flat surface at the planing area, which won’t leave the water, creates lift, so let’s look for a delta-shape flat way back aft.

Wally expects a top speed of 70 knots from the 118’s four engines-a pair of gas turbines and two diesel auxiliaries-turning two KaMeWa waterjets. I call the diesels auxiliaries because the helmsman will use them for low-speed maneuvering, turbines disengaged, and cruising at very low speeds. Each turbine/diesel duet couples to a clutched transfer box, which permits running one or both engines each side. This, too, is common on military craft.

If my assumptions about the bottom are skewed, I’ll be the first to admit it, but we’ll have to wait until hull number one splashes or I see her under construction. I do know the shape benefits from extensive tank testing.

Wally expects to launch hulls one and two during 2002. Right now, though, I think the Wallypower 118 is the most significant design of the past 14 years, the period I’ve devoted to studying how boats work and why. Like all brilliant works of art, functional or decorative, the 118 defies a simple interpretation. Her statement is far too powerful to permit any observer to settle on a middle ground. They’ll love her or hate her.

Let me be the first to say, “I love this design.”

Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Wallypower 118 was built in 2002 by Italian shipyard Rodriquez Intermarine. With a composite hull and superstructure, she features naval architecture by Wally and Intermarine, and exterior and interior design by Lazzarini Pickering and Wally. This three waterjet and twin screw propulsion yacht measures 36 metres and can accommodate up to six guests cruising and sleeping.

Motor yacht Wallypower 118 is easily one of the most distinctive vessels on the water with her unique and striking exterior design. Capable of reaching high cruising speeds, her design was the result of extensive development and research that included exhausting testing. She has a steeply angled V-shaped and a stand-out deckhouse that crowns the super yacht.

Her hull colour can be likened to that of a chameleon; it’s dark green tone changes with alterations in the outside landscape and light. Her glass-sided deckhouse hides a generous saloon aft dressed in white and wood that creates somewhat of a beach house feel. Here also lies a dining table for 14, relaxing nooks and entertainment areas.

Her interior is of minimalist design, and instead of showy extras, the majority of her features serve a purpose; towards weight minimisation, speed enhancement or must-have comfort. However she also boasts her share of soft furnishings that give the interior a look not far from a New York style loft.

Amongst her three cabins are an indulgent owner’s stateroom, and two Queen-size guest cabins. The owner’s stateroom features an en suite with his and hers shower and large tub, while each guest cabin also features an en suite. The crew’s quarters on the lower deck includes three lower cabins that sleep six and include en suite facilities.

Luxury yacht Wallypower 118 is powered by three DDC TF50 gas Turbines and two Cummins 370 horsepower engines; a combination quite common on smaller warships but not so on super yachts. She can achieve a range of 380 nautical miles while cruising at a speed of 60 knots or 1,500 nautical miles at nine knots.

Featuring a dedicated crew, Wallypower 118 is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at 60 knots while her crew of six ensure the needs of every guest are met. The luxury vessel has been built to R.I.N.A classification.

“You look around the market today and I would say that 95 per cent of yachts from 40 to 140 feet have copied Genie of the Lamp. That kind of layout, that kind of style and deck, it’s clear. I don’t think it’s too much to say that Genie has influenced the last 20 years.” - "Today, everyone has ‘invented’ the vertical bow. We didn’t invent it, it was invented in the 19th century, even before that, but when we introduced it in 2003, everyone was against it. Even the naval architects, they were saying, ‘no, this boat will have big problems’. And now everyone understands that there are a lot of advantages in having a vertical bow. And everyone is claiming they invented it!” - Luca Bassani, founder and president of Wally

The 118 WallyPower is one of the most eye-catching yachts in today’s luxury boating market, created by the Monaco-based Wally Yachts. It is narrow and angular in design with black glass housing.

It is 118 feet long and is capable of reaching speeds as fast as 60 knots (70 mph, 110 km/h).

It is capable of this feat due to three Vericor TF50 gas turbines generating 16,800 hp. The three gas turbines each drive a Rolls-Royce Kamewa water jet, two steerable outboard and a non-steering booster on centerline. The steerable water jets also have a diesel engine input for a 370 hp Cummins diesel hence these two wing drive trains are Combined Diesel and Gas Turbine (CODOG).

Wally Yachts did extensive testing in the SSPA facility in Gothenburg, Sweden and at Ferrari’s windtunnel in Italy.

118 WallyPowerLuxury Yacht

The 118 WallyPower is superbly crafted of exotic materials in and out, with thin wood veneers over honeycomb cores and lots of exposed black carbon fiber.

The 118 WallyPower won the MYDA, Millennium Yacht Design Award, organised by Seatec (the yachting and shipping technology show of Carrarafiere) for the “Layout of the Third Millennium.”

The WallyPower is also being honoured by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as the sole boat in its major architecture and design exhibition, ‘Glamour: Fabricating Affluence’, which ran from October 9 2004 to January 16 2005.

118 WallyPower Luxury Yacht

Wally Yachts has only produced one, and it currently resides in the Mediterranean. The 118 is known by most from its role as the “Renovatio” in the 2005 science-fiction film The Island.

Price? $24 million- and the Wally owner should budget, say, $400,000 a year for a professional crew. Wally is awaiting a firm order before building the next 118.

The company might have to wait a while. “I don’t think it’s a marketable product,” says Roger Marshall, a yacht designer and boating writer.

“It’s a high-speed boat that is way overpowered and expensive as hell to run, so the market consists of very few people.”

Vericor power systems’ tf50 gas turbines to power wallypower 118 high-speed yachts.

118 wallypower yacht

Three Vericor Power Systems' TFT50 marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected to power the 118 Wallypower high-speed yacht being built by Intermarine Shipyard, Sarzana, Italy for Wally Yacht.

This is Wally Yacht's first foray into high-speed power yachts, and the company's initial application of gas turbines. Wally Yacht, based in Monte Carlo, Monaco, is a world-renowned designer of high-speed sailing and power yachts.

The 118-foot yacht will feature three TF50 gas turbines in a Combined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine configuration. Two TF50s will be used as side or "wing" engines, with one small auxiliary diesel engine connected to each wing engine. The diesels will provide for very slow maneuvering only. The wing engines will drive steerable waterjets while the center boost TF50 will drive a fixed waterjet. Total propulsion system output will be 16,800 horsepower/ 12,533 kilowatts (see attached line drawing of the propulsion system configuration).

Cruising speed will be 60 knots, with a maximum speed of 70 knots. Table 1 shows the technical specifications for the 118 Wallypower yacht.

Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) packaged the CODOG system for the 118 Wallypower yacht. DDC, a Vericor Power Systems marine systems distributor, is part of MTU-Friedrichshafen, a division of DaimlerChrysler Powersystems. DaimlerChrysler is one of the world's leading manufacturers of marine propulsion engines and systems.

The integrated system includes three TF50 gas turbines, controls, Maag gears, as well as fuel, lube, cooling and exhaust components. Table 2 illustrates the commercial marine specifications for the TF50 gas turbine.

A team comprised of Vericor Power Systems and DDC field service engineers will install and conduct sea trials for the high-speed yacht. Installation of the CODOG system on the Wally Yacht is scheduled for March 2002. Sea trials are to follow in April/ May 2002.

Yacht Experience Other commercial applications of Vericor's TF engines include the high-speed yacht Detroit Eagle. The vessel uses a TF50 aeroderivative marine gas turbine, marking the first such engine to begin operation. The megayacht, which can reach a comfortable cruising speed of approximately 35 knots, completed sea trials in the spring of 2001 and is now in operation.

The yacht was built at the Feadship de Vries shipyard in The Netherlands. This is the second Feadship yacht fitted with TF gas turbines. The 161-foot Sussurro yacht launched in 1998 features a TF80 (2xTF40) gas turbine system.

The "Mangusta" series yachts, being built by Overmarine Shipyard, in Viareggio, Italy, use TF40 and TF50 gas turbines. Five yachts use a total of five TF40 and two TF50 gas turbines in a variety of configurations. Four Mangusta yachts are now in full operation, with the fifth yacht in the series under construction.

The TF engines for all of the above applications were provided by Vericor Power Systems.

Wallypower 118 - the coolest luxury yacht in the world

The Wallypower 118 is a luxury yacht that gained widespread attention after it was featured in the 2005 science-fiction thriller movie "The Island." The yacht was designed and built by the Italian yacht manufacturer Wally Yachts and was launched in 2006. It is an ultra-modern and luxurious vessel that is designed to combine speed, style, and comfort.

In the movie "The Island," the Wallypower 118 is the personal yacht of the main antagonist, Dr. Merrick, played by Sean Bean . The yacht is depicted as an impressive vessel, sleek and stylish with a futuristic design that is fitting for the movie's sci-fi theme.

It measures 118 feet in length, thus the name, with a beam of 26 feet, and a draft of 5 feet. It can accommodate up to ten guests in five staterooms, and it has a crew of six. The yacht is powered by three gas turbines that generate a total of 16,800 horsepower, allowing it to reach a top speed of 60 knots, or about 70 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest yachts on the open seas .

118 wallypower yacht

It's exterior design is striking and unique, with sleek lines and a minimalist style. The superstructure is made of carbon fiber, which makes the yacht lightweight and adds to its impressive speed. It's innovative propulsion system includes water jets instead of traditional propellers , which further contribute to its speed and maneuverability.

The interior is equally impressive , with a contemporary minimalist design, much like the outside. The main salon features floor-to-ceiling windows that offer stunning views of the surrounding water. The yacht's state-of-the-art entertainment system includes a plasma screen TV, satellite TV, and a surround-sound system. The master suite is located on the main deck and features a king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom, and a private balcony. The guest cabins are located on the lower deck and offer similar amenities and luxurious finishes.

It has become an icon in the world of yachting, renowned for its futuristic design and advanced technology. In "The Island," the Wallypower 118 is portrayed as the ultimate symbol of power and luxury , a fitting representation of the antagonist's character.

In conclusion, this is a remarkable yacht that has captured the imagination of people worldwide. Its characteristics have made it a standout vessel in the yachting world, and its appearance in a hollywood production has only added to its mystique.

118 wallypower yacht

The price of the 118 Wallypower is US$33 million for the triple gas turbine version , or $22 million for twin diesels. It has a range of 1,500 nautical miles (2,800 km) at 9 knots (17 km/h), or 300 nautical miles (560 km) at 60 knots (110 km/h). Fuel capacity is 22,000 liters (5800 US gallons). At the maximum speed of 60 knots (110 km/h) the gas turbine uses 15 US gallons / 58 liters of fuel per nautical mile, 900 gallons / 3500 liters per hour . The boat displaces only 95 tons because of the sophisticated building technology that uses a hybrid structure to save weight, and can accommodate six guests and six crew.

It is worth noting that the final cost of a Wallypower 118 can be significantly higher than the base price due to the customization options available. Owners of the yacht can choose from a range of options such as interior finishes, materials, and technology upgrades, all of which can add to the cost of the yacht.

Exactly one has been built .

118 WallyPower Yacht… The Majesty of the See

118 wallypower yacht

The 118 WallyPower yacht is, to put it in the briefest terms, an undisputed masterpiece. Christened the “Galeocerdo”, it has grabbed the eye of all who see its dark visage, and though its appearance alone is, to say the very least, impressive, the finer details are just as incredible. You could scour the excellent yacht harbours of Monaco or Abu Dhabi, glimpse all their seafaring wonders and yet fail to spot something that carries the same honed, dramatic presence. Beneath the exterior lies three gas turbines. These turbines pump out a gargantuan 5,600 bhp, and each drives a Rolls Royce KaMeWa Waterjet. A 370 bhp diesel engine aids the two jets that help steer the vast craft. Overall, the 118 WallyPower rockets across the waves with a combined output of 16,800 bhp. Such colossal power bolts the yacht to a top speed of 60 knots or 70 mph. Such speed is hardly reached even for far smaller boats.

118 wallypower yacht

And it can keep up such a speed for a range of 300 nautical miles. However, its power source isn’t totally thanks, as the sharp knife body shape, with smoke testing conducted at Ferrari’s wind tunnel in Maranello, helps cut through the waves like scissors through the cloth.

118 wallypower yacht

Beyond its mechanical prowess lies the most exquisite interior, where the focus on performance can still be visible. Inside the cabin are carbon fibre window frames, and the whole deck’s superstructure is a carbon frame in the 118 WallyPower’s pursuit of lightness. Even the bath fixtures and the dining tables are made from the carbon in the drive to keep the weight low. Such advanced and clever building ideas allow the boat only to weigh 95 tons.

118 wallypower yacht

This less is more approach cannot only be seen in its engineering but also in its cabin style. The dining area, deck, navigation and cockpit are all continuous elements, creating an open space that suits the 118 WallyPower’s breezy nature. Comparisons can easily be drawn to that of a swanky, new-age metropolitan apartment or even the understated flamboyance of a spy villain’s lair! The deck’s appearance has a sense of practicality too. Two of the dining tables can be mechanically lowered to offer more room, and the dining and lounge area is placed away from the heat of the engines.

118 wallypower yacht

Head deeper inside this gloriously suave vessel, and you’ll find six televisions at your leisure and a small, stainless steel kitchen that wouldn’t look too out of place on the set of science fiction films. Coincidently, the 118 WallyPower did indeed gets its moment in the spotlight by appearing in the 2005 thriller “The Island”.

118 wallypower yacht

Three bedrooms can be found below the deck. The owner’s stateroom acts as the largest, bearing the comfort of a king-size bed and a pair of en suites, complete with a skylight. A couple of guest rooms are also available, each with a queen-size bed and an en suite. Putting into detail how a yacht perfectly capable of housing six people in refined, palatial splendour truly puts into perspective the technological brilliance in achieving such a low weight and high speed.

118 wallypower yacht

In such a vast world of water, it seems a shame to have such a masterpiece be so rare to find. That being said, perhaps it only fits and remains one of a kind. Currently, the 118 WallyPower is one of a kind and owned by the Kondakji family. That exclusivity level can reinforce its place as an icon on the waves and a marvellous representative of pushing the boundaries of yacht design. Some day there will be faster and more luxurious power yachts than the 118 WallyPower, but they will never make anyone forget their mesmerising presence.

WALLYPOWER 118

wallypower 118 model

WallyPower 118 is the fastest motor yacht on water. Three gas turbines generating 16,800 HP power allows the 118 WallyPower to cruise a leisurely 60 knots in flat seas and tackle rough waters with ease. The yacht is narrow and angular in design, driven by three Vericor TF50 gas turbines generating 5,600 horsepower (each driving a Rolls-Royce Kamewa water jet), two steerable outboard and a non-steering booster on the centerline. The steerable water jets also have a diesel engine input for a 370 hp, thus making the ship a Combined Diesel or Gas Turbine configured vessel.  If the gas turbine engines are all out, the 118 WallyPower uses 14 gallons for every mile at 60 knots. At this rate it uses 951 gallons an hour.

wallypower 118

The hull of the 118 WallyPower is the result of an extensive R&D program including tank testing at the SSPA facility in Gothenburg, Sweden, and smoke testing in the Ferrari Wind Tunnel Facility in Maranello, Italy. It is stable at speed thanks to the deep V (22 degrees) hull shape and a straight stem bow designed to pierce waves.

The 118's deck, cockpit, navigation, dining and saloon areas have been designed as one continuous element. The open space incorporates three areas, from stern to bow: the saloon, the dining/seating area, and the navigation cockpit. There is a 360-degree view from the dining area. The deck of the Wally 118 has a hidden crane and compartment for a tender.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

DISCOVER THE MODEL

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

catamaran boat double decker

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. Don’t miss out on your own little piece of paradise.

A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

A seafaring adventure on Island Routes double-decker catamaran cruise

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

Dek Kat Boats Logo

DEK KAT 2680

Dek kat 2680 model.

Meet the new standard in nearshore and offshore coastal high-performance catamaran deck boats. With it’s revolutionary twin tunnel hull design, the Dek Kat 2680 is changing the game for inshore fishing by providing a large, stable fishing platform without sacrificing creature comfort options for the family.

BETTER FEATURES

With ample in deck storage, minimal bow rise on acceleration coupled with a shallow water draft of approximately 12”, the Dek Kat is fast becoming an in-shore guide favorite. At 26’ 2” inches long with a beam of 8’6” there is no other bay boat on the market that comes close to her deck space. The twin tunnels provide a stable and comfortable ride even when the weather is not fully cooperative.

If live bait fishing is your game, the 2680 comes standard with two large in deck live/release wells with the option for additional live wells above deck in the forward seating or in our custom leaning post configuration.

MORE COMFORT

The Dek Kat 2680 is a semi-custom built boat which is just as comfortable on the bay waters chasing trout and redfish as it is at the sand bar with your family. Our oversized hard tops keep the family comfortable with the shade and you will find an abundance of seating throughout the boat, including our custom Adirondack style seat built into the console. Built for fishing and comfort cruising, the Dek Kat is truly one of the most versatile bay boat designs out there. It is ready for whatever your weekend desires are upon the water.

Savor Bonaire's breathtaking seascapes from the Sea Breeze double-decker power catamaran .

You'll stop at the famous pink salt flats and white mountains of salt. Your guide will explain the salt production process.

Offshore from the historical white slave huts, learn some Caribbean facts and discover why these centuries-old huts are built next to the sea.

The catamaran approaches the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire by way of the famous Bonaire Marine Park . Its protected reef makes it a divers' paradise. From up close, you will see Bonaire's most attractive white-sand beach. Its name, of course, is No-Name Beach.

Follow the coastline for exceptional panoramic views, and don't forget to look down into the crystal-clear turquoise water. Oceanfront hotels and restaurants and beautiful Dutch Caribbean mansions line the way back to the port.

Maximum age is 70 years. Maximum height is 6'6". Maximum weight is 330 lbs. Guests who are more than five months pregnant or have a heart condition, asthma, or leg or chest injuries and/or recent surgery are not allowed to participate. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations.

Some of the best decking materials include:

  • Wood: Cedar, redwood, and tropical hardwoods offer a classic look but require regular maintenance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Affordable pine that resists rot and insects but may need staining.
  • Composite Decking: Low-maintenance blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, available in various colors.
  • PVC Decking: Synthetic option resistant to stains, scratches, and fading, but can be pricey.
  • Aluminum Decking: Lightweight, durable, rust-resistant, suitable for water areas, but more expensive.
  • Vinyl Decking: Low-maintenance, moisture, and rot-resistant, but quality varies.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.
