Cool but crowded: A review of the American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

Amex opened its first international Centurion Lounge just over two years ago in Hong Kong, which made a lot of sense given how many premium cardholders live -- and travel through -- the city. Not only is the Hong Kong lounge the issuer's first international Centurion Lounge , it's also the only one to feature an entirely separate area for Centurion cardholders.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Although I'm not a Centurion cardholder (we can't all be Brian Kelly ), I was able to check out the rest of the Lounge on a recent trip through Hong Kong.

The Centurion Lounge in Hong Kong (HKG) is in Terminal 1, the airport's main terminal. Terminal 1 at HKG is shaped like a "Y," and the lounge is just in the center of that "Y."

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The lounge is on the upper level of the departures floor near Gate 60. You need to take an elevator or escalator to access Level 7 though there's plenty of signage to get you there.

Sign up for TPG's daily email newsletter for travel tips delivered directly to your inbox!

If you're originating in Hong Kong, you exit security and passport control near gates 1 and 5. While you could walk all the way to Gate 60, there's also an Automated People Mover that stops at gates 40 to 80.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

If you take the APM, make sure to get out at this stop. If your flight is departing from a gate numbered 40 or below, you need to retrace your steps back to your gate. The APM only operates in one direction, so you need to walk from there to your gate.

The lounge is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Customers can access a Centurion Lounge by flashing The Platinum Card® from American Express ($695 annual fee. See rates & fees), The Business Platinum Card® from American Express or The Centurion® Card . Visitors are entitled to bring two guests (or immediate family, if you carry a Centurion card), and lap infants don't count against the two-guest allotment.

The information for the Centurion Card card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Cardholders with other flavors of the Platinum Card , such as the Schwab, Ameriprise or international versions, also have access. Authorized users with a Centurion or Platinum Card also have access — you can add up to three authorized users to the personal Platinum Card for a total of $175 per year (see rates and fees) — but those who have the Platinum's complimentary additional Gold Card don't have access.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Note that Platinum cardholders can only access Centurion lounges up to three hours before a departing flight. Platinum members also get access when connecting through the airport, but won't get access without an onward boarding pass.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card cardholders will receive complimentary access to the Centurion Lounge when flying Delta with a ticket purchased on any American Express card issued in the U.S. You'll be able to bring up to two guests for a fee of $50 each. But, Delta doesn't fly to Hong Kong , so you won't be able to use the Amex Delta Reserve to enter the Hong Kong lounge.

The Centurion Lounge in Hong Kong is L-shaped, with a long corridor extending beyond the entrance before making a sharp turn and getting into the main relaxation area.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The design will be familiar to anyone who's visited a Centurion Lounge before, as you'll find artwork and color schemes similar to that in the other Centurion lounges.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The lounge is open-air, affording great airport views and adding to the space's volume.

Along the narrow entryway corridor is the boardroom with a large table, a meeting room with a smaller four-top table, and an even smaller phone room.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

These proved to be great places to sit when the main area got overcrowded.

The centerpiece of the main area is the expansive bar. There were a few barstools here, but this wouldn't be a great place to sit, since it's also where the overflow buffet items are displayed.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Flanking the bar on either side are drink and snack towers and nonalcoholic drinks.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Behind the bar are the restrooms and shower.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The main sitting area is just in front of the bar. There are various two-person dining tables here, as well as relaxation chairs lower to the ground.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Aside from the table seating, there's a small nook with a counter area with seating for about 10 people.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Throughout my stay, the lounge got really crowded. So crowded, in fact, that the front desk opened up a waitlist for entry. Just take a look at the pictures I took when the lounge opened at 5:30 a.m. above compared to what it looked like at 8:30 a.m.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

However, there was one peaceful area that I didn't have access to, the dedicated space for Centurion cardholders . Black card holders had a separate space behind the behind a sliding black door leading to more seating and a la carte dining.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There wasn't much in the way of amenities. About half the tables had access to power and USB ports, and those were the tables to fill up first.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There was only one shower, and I'd heard that the wait can often exceed an hour. If you're looking to shower, make sure to place your name on the waitlist once you enter.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The shower room itself was quite nice, with L'Occitane bath amenities.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Aside from the shower room, the lounge had nicer bathrooms than the airport terminal.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The Wi-Fi signal extended throughout the space, and the network provided above-average speeds of 64 Mbps download and 26 Mbps upload.

The only other amenity was the single public-use computer and printer in the boardroom.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Food and beverage

Aside from the large bar, there was a pretty extensive breakfast buffet the morning I visited. There wasn't any a la carte dining, but everything on the buffet was quite fresh.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Breakfast was served from 5:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., the buffet transitioned to all-day cuisine until closing.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The hot foods included hard boiled eggs, waffles, Asian noodles, sausages, potatoes, scrambled eggs, pork patties and other Asian specialities like dried oysters and shrimp dumplings.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

In addition to the hot food, there was also a salad bar with various fruits and vegetables.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Right next to the salad bar was a small refrigerated section with yogurt and Swiss muesli.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

My favorite from the buffet was the breakfast breads section, and particularly the miniature donuts. I'm a sucker for things with sprinkles, so these really hit the spot.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

While the food was definitely above average for a business-class lounge, the star of the show was the alcohol selection curated by mixologist Jim Meehan from New York's Please Don't Tell.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The extensive wine and cocktail menu made it really easy to forget how overcrowded the lounge was. I enjoyed perusing the cocktail menu, but there was a bartender on hand ready to whip up your favorite concoction.

There were plenty of Coke products, juices and a Melitta coffee machine.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Although it got crowded, the roaming servers did a phenomenal job of removing used dishes and cutlery.

Overall impression

Though the Centurion Lounge in Hong Kong may be Amex's first international outpost, the design and space is reminiscent of the eight other locations across America. And that's a good thing. A Centurion Lounge is well-appointed, and Hong Kong is no exception.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The food and beverages were delicious, though it got packed. Overall, the Centurion Lounge is a great option for travelers passing through Hong Kong. It's leagues better than the Priority Pass lounges , but if you have access, the Cathay Pacific lounges are definitely a step up from this one.

American Express’ lounge network covers both domestic U.S. locations and key international cities. Hong Kong is one of American Express’  international flagship Centurion Lounge locations and features a well-equipped facility that provides complimentary food, drinks, areas to relax, tables to work and restrooms to freshen up.

While the lounge isn’t as large as other locations, the Centurion Lounge Hong Kong plays host to several upgraded amenities that allow it to compete with many of the first class options in the airport , mainly those belonging to Cathay Pacific.

In this post, we’ll look at how to access the Centurion Lounge Hong Kong, what amenities you can expect, tips and tricks for making the most of your visit, and sample menus of the food and drink you’ll be able to experience during your stay.

How To Access the Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

As the name suggests, the Centurion Lounge Hong Kong belongs to the American Express Centurion Lounge network, where you’ll need either The Platinum Card ® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express , Centurion ® Card from American Express , Delta SkyMiles ® Reserve American Express Card (when you book your Delta flight with your Delta Reserve card), or Delta SkyMiles ® Reserve Business American Express Card (when you book your Delta flight with your Delta Reserve Business card) to enter.

Hot Tip:  Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 125k (or 150k) points with the Amex Platinum. The current public offer is 80,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Your credit card can be issued in any country (for example, you can use the Hong Kong version of the Amex Platinum card), and can also be a co-branded version (one where Amex partners with another brand for additional benefits), such as the American Express Platinum Card for Schwab ® .

There are a few rules you’ll need to abide by, however, since this is a Centurion Lounge:

  • Day of departure flights only — You’re only allowed to enter the Centurion Lounge on the day of your flight, and you won’t receive access if you’re arriving from a flight, except for connections.
  • No more than 3 hours before your flight — To prevent overcrowding, American Express has revised their lounge access policy to restrict entry on flights that are more than 3 hours before departure. You’ll need to wait until it is 3 hours before departure to be let in unless you have a connecting flight, in which case you can come in as soon as you land.
  • Amex Platinum card and Amex Business Platinum cardmembers may enter with up to 2 complimentary guests if they have spent $75,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year. Otherwise, a guest day pass can be purchased for $50 per adult or $30 per child between the ages of 2 and 17.
  • Centurion cardmembers may enter with up to 2 guests or immediate family (spouse or domestic partner, and children under 18) at no additional charge.
  • Delta Reserve cardholders may bring up to 2 guests at a per-visit rate of $50 per person, per location.
  • Amex Platinum card, Amex Business Platinum card, and Centurion cardmembers may purchase a day pass for any additional guests for $50.

The lounge is located in Terminal 1, which is host to several airlines, including Hong Kong’s own Cathay Pacific. There’s an escalator by gate 60 you’ll take up to level 7 where you’re greeted by a wall with the blue American Express logo. On this level, there is also a United Club and a Plaza Premium Priority Pass lounge , for reference.

The lounge is open from 3 p.m. through 12:30 a.m., covering the vast majority of flight departures and connections.

As you walk through the blue glass, you’ll see the familiar greenery wall present in most Centurion Lounges. Lounge attendants will greet you and ask for your Amex Platinum card or Centurion card, your boarding pass, and identification.

They’ll check to be sure you’re credentialed to enter, and if you are, you’ll be given the Wi-Fi password and a brief overview of the facilities. All of the rooms and amenities are located down a long corridor once you pass the registration desk.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

According to American Express, the Centurion Lounge at Hong Kong airport features:

  • Computer bar
  • Locally-inspired cuisine
  • High-speed Wi-Fi
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Member service desk
  • Premium bar
  • Print, fax, and copy services
  • Shower suites
  • Dedicated work area

The lounge is approximately 8,000 feet in size, making it feel relatively small when compared to other Centurion Lounge locations.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong has 2 meeting rooms and 1 phone room. One of the meeting rooms is larger than the other, with seating for up to 10 around a conference table. The room is equipped with a flat-screen television on the wall where you can share presentations or watch television.

The smaller meeting room simply has a small conference table with seating up to 8, and the phone room is a quiet place where you can take a conference call or the like.

There is no charge to rent these rooms, and they’re first-come-first-served (or first-reserved).

Hot Tip: To reserve these meeting rooms, speak to the guest services staff upon entering the lounge. Some cardmembers have had luck having American Express directly reserve the meeting rooms through such services as the American Express Platinum concierge, though your experience may differ.

As you walk past the meeting rooms, there’s a bar area featuring 6 seats around the bar and then 4 tables just off to the side, with additional seating available nearby. The bar hosts several complimentary cocktails and drinks, and there are also some self-serve options depending on the time of day.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong - Tendered Bar

This lounge is on the smaller side, but it does have a fair amount of seating, mostly with clustered chairs around small coffee tables. There are some traditional dining tables, but most of what you’ll find is grouped together.

If you want some fabulous views of the airport and runways, there is a bar-like seating area with stools facing a series of large window panes — a perfect view for any AvGeek!

Hot Tip: The lounge isn’t great for those who are here on an extended stay who want a place to nap or sprawl out, so if you need a quiet place to catch some shut-eye, you may want to look at other lounge locations.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong - Seating

Food is available all day from 3 p.m. until 12 a.m., and everything is self-serve and free of charge.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong - Buffet Dining

If you’re checking out the bar, you’re in for a treat. Jim Meehan is American Express’ expert mixologist and has worked up some great cocktails. Jim has served as a bartender in some of the hottest restaurants and bars in New York City (like Gramercy Tavern and the Pegu Club) and opened PDT, a James Beard award-winning bar.

He’s even got his own bar-inspired consulting firm, Mixography, Inc., so you know he’s the man for the job to make you the perfect drink.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Blue Door which includes Johnny Walker Black Scotch Whisky, Myer’s Dark Rum, Benedictine and lemon juice

  • Gin Basil Collins which includes Botanist Gin, Kimono Yuzu soda, lemon juice, simple syrup
  • Tea-quila Highball which includes chilled lemon verbena tea, Siete Leguas Blanco Tequila, agave syrup, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong - Espresso Martini C

There are also several wines on offer, too, as of late 2019 (wine served 3 p.m. until 12 a.m.):

  • Brut, G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge, NV, Champagne, France
  • Cabernet Sauvignon, The Federalist Lodi, 2015, Sonoma, California
  • Chardonnay, Terlato Family, 2014, Russian River, California
  • Merlot, Grace Vineyard Tasya’s Reserve, 2011, Shanxi, China
  • Moscato, Seven Daughters, 2016, California
  • Pinot Grigio, Lunardi, 2016, Veneto, Italy
  • Pinot Noir, Flor de Campo, 2014, Santa Barbara, California
  • Prosecco, Riondo Spumante, NV, Veneto, Italy
  • Prosecco, Riondo Spunmantel, NV, Veneto, Italy
  • Rosé, Sanford Estate, 2016, Santa Rita Hills, California
  • Sauvignon Blanc, Markham, 2016, Napa Valley, California

If you’re not an alcohol drinker, there’s a fridge with Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Fanta, Sprite, Pellegrino, Acqua Panna, tonic water, and ginger beer. In the same area is a coffee machine, dispensing traditional coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, and more.

Bottom Line All food and drink in the Centurion Lounge is complimentary.

The lounge features men’s and women’s restrooms, as well as 2 separate, private shower rooms. These shower rooms are equipped with a toilet, sink, and shower and feature complimentary soaps, shaving kits, and other accessories, as well as a bath mat, towel, and washcloth. These are replaced new after each visitor.

The showers are first-come-first-served, and to gain access, you need to reserve them at the front desk. During peak flight departure times, you may notice a wait for the showers, so it’s best to reserve early so you can guarantee yourself a spot.

The entire Centurion Lounge space features complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout, perfect for you to work or download your favorite movie before leaving on a flight. You can get the password to the Wi-Fi at check-in or by visiting the guest services desk.

The lounge features several Mac computers you can use to browse the internet on, check emails, or print small documents. These computers and printers are free of charge to access.

The lounge has several international magazines and newspapers on offer, including several in different languages. You can take any of these with you to read on your journey.

If you need any document printed, faxed, or copied, you can see one of the hosts at the entry desk and they’d be happy to assist you in getting that done, or you can visit the self-service computer bar for any minor tasks. This is perfect for printing that last document before an important business meeting or signing a time-sensitive contract.

There is a special mini-lounge located within the Centurion Lounge Hong Kong reserved for Centurion cardholders.

American Express shares some details about what you’ll find in this private space:

“The private Centurion area will also feature an a la carte menu designed by Michelin star chef, Lau Yiu Fai of Yan Toh Heen at the InterContinental Hong Kong. Chef Lau’s menu will offer Cantonese dishes such as baked pork in puff pastry, crispy spring rolls with kimchi and pork, crispy fresh prawns with black truffles, braised wagyu beef cheek and turnip, barbecued pork with honey and steamed rice, and baked egg tartlettes with bird’s nest, among others.”

The American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong is a great retreat in this otherwise busy airport. An airline-specific lounge, such as one of Cathay Pacific’s, will generally have better food and amenities, but if those lounges are crowded or you don’t have access, the American Express Centurion Lounge is certainly one of your best bets.

Review: American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Including Centurion Card Sit Down Dining

by Gary Leff on November 9, 2017

And the interesting thing is that this one, while accessible by both Platinum and Centurion cardholders, is the first one that’s really far more geared to the Centurion card set. In U.S. lounges you’ll often see tables in the dining room set aside for Black Card holders, and a better champagne on request. This lounge goes much further.

The American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong is located near gate 60. Hong Kong’s airport has a train that runs one direction, after clearing departure immigration and security you can take the train and get off at the gates 40-80 stop. If your flight is leaving out of low-numbered gates you’re going to need to walk about.

When you get off the train and take the escalators up to the departures level you’ll be near Cathay Pacific’s “The Bridge.” You’ll turn right and follow the sign towards ‘lounges’.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The lounge is up a set up escalators, in the same cluster as the United Club, and utilizing the space of the old Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Entry of course is ‘through the blue doors’.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Behind the desk was Michael, the lounge manager, who moved to Hong Kong to open this lounge. Regular Centurion lounge guests may recognize him from the Dallas lounge where he’s worked since that one opened.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Somewhat reminiscent of Cathay Pacific’s “The Wing” lounge in Hong Kong, or the British Airways Galleries First and Concorde Room in London, it’s open air out over the terminal itself.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

On the way to the main seating area and dining room/bar are of the lounge are a couple of meeting rooms.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

If the lounge is super crowded head to the meeting rooms, which in my experience in the U.S. at least tend to be underutilized.

Continue down the hall to the main area of the lounge. And take a moment to look around, the views of the airport and out to the tarmac are fantastic. Look down and you’ll see check-in for Cathay Pacific’s The Bridge lounge as well.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

While most of the lounge is furnished in its own decor rather than familiar “American Express lounge chic” there are some familiar accents.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The bar area is gorgeous.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There are working stools with views.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

And there’s seating both inside the dining and bar area and ‘outside’ of it (there isn’t any real physical separation, it’s just separated by design elements).

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Since it’s an American Express lounge, the focus is food and drink. There’s no kids room or spa at this lounge, but you won’t go hungry while you’re here. The options aren’t super-extensive but there’s hot food on offer.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

In addition to the bar, dining, and seating areas there are restrooms and one shower room. The shower room faces significant demand so put your name down for it right away when you reach the lounge if you want to make use of it.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Ultimately the main area of the lounge is fairly small. I was there shortly after noon on a Saturday so it wasn’t super busy. It isn’t yet crazy like Dallas Fort-Worth, Miami, or San Francisco though it will certainly get busier at peak times and as more people get word that the lounge is there.

What really sets is apart from the other American Express lounges though is the premium offerings for Centurion cardmembers. Eligible guest receive a welcome pass when they check-in at the lounge, and that pass is presented at the desk to the left of the buffet area. I requested special access from American Express to get a look at this part of the lounge.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Immediately on the right is an exclusive Centurion cardmember seating area.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

And it’s followed by sit down dining.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Here’s the menu designed by Chef Lau Yiu Fai of Yan Toh Heen at the Intercontinental Hong Kong:

american express centurion yacht hong kong

I ordered a couple of dishes to get a sense for the kitchen. First up is their burger, I guess I was mostly interested in this because of the fantastic burger in American Airlines Flagship Dining at New York JFK. I do like American’s burger better but I requested that my fries come out well done and American Express really delivered — fantastic fries.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

I also tried the Thai yellow curry and I have to say that the beef was spectacular , I was really surprised by how good it was. I think I liked this dish more than anything in the Pier’s first class dining room.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

I also tried the mille feuille and enjoyed it.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The drink menu in the Centurion section of the lounge is dedicated to it. Here’s what’s on offer:

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Beyond Centurion cardholder dining there’s another small room, not yet finished (it appears to be being used now for storage) where Michael the lounge manager tells me they’re planning to host special Centurion cardholder events.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong is open every day from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Access is via Platinum card (cardmember plus 2 guests, authorized users on a Platinum account can access independently and each can also bring 2 guests) or Centurion card (2 guests or immediate family).

The views from this lounge are better than any Centurion lounge in the world. I like the design, it’s a departure from the American Express standard but that’s also refreshing since it gives the lounge more of sense of place. Overall it’s a good lounge, superior to the United Club or Priority Pass options in the airport. The basic lounge is more intimate but not better than what Cathay Pacific has for its business class customers in my opinion.

What sets it apart though is the sit down dining and separate sitting space for Centurion cardholders. That space makes it competitive even with the first class offerings in the airport, though of course the lounge isn’t going to match the spa or private curtained-off relaxation areas of the first class side of the Pier.

It makes sense that Hong Kong would see a Centurion lounge. It’s a high yield market with a big cluster of premium American Express cardholders. American Express is going after the Asian market generally and China in particular. Hong Kong isn’t even the American Express lounge that was expected to be first in the region, so I expect we’ll be seeing more.

Better burger? Here or at Cathay’s Pier?

I’ll be visiting the Hong Kong lounge next month, but . . . . . those sitting areas in the lounge look like prison cells with bars. 🙂 It’s an Alcatraz-style Centurion Lounge

Agree with Chad. First impression is a jail cell without doors. Maybe they were going for a Bird Cage open air tea room like one sees on the streets in Asian cities. If they are after Chinese clientele, that might make sense. Hope you share this sentiment, and if so, passed it on to Michael F. People’s perceptions can be pretty distorted anyway after a long flight. Certainly Centurion Lounge doesn’t want folks flipping out in the reserved section.

A couple of weeks ago I made a point of leaving my hotel in Kowloon early and skipping the fabulous breakfast on the top floor overlooking the harbor to give the HK Centurion a try. It was a long way from my gate but the train going out there was quick.

After entry at around 7 AM I took a look at the breakfast. To my surprise and unlike the Dallas, SF or other Centurions the offerings were terrible and extremely limited. I’d match it up to a mid range Marriott chain buffet. Cool chicken sausages, cooler runny scrambled eggs and chilly vegetable dumplings – and that in the land of wonderful dim sum. The only saving grace was a barista at the bar who could make a great cappuccino.

I tasted the food, decided to skip it and headed back to my gate in the main part of the terminal. Its a long walk on many moving sidewalks.

For my money, stick with the Cathay lounge. Or for that matter, the Thai. Its far better.

The centurion at Mexico City and Toluca also have a separate area for centurion dining order off the menu for no charge. Service great at both those locations

Yes. And I was also at this Hong Kong lounge centurion private dining back room 2 weeks ago and would recommend as a nice experience. Staff very polite. Dodd and drink great Thanks for review

So you scammed your way into the back room….nice

American Express Hong Kong Centurion Lounge (HKG) Review

Offers contained within this article maybe expired.

The American Express Centurion Lounge at Hong Kong International Airport is one of the newest Centurion Lounges to open. It’s got a different vibe from many other Centurion Lounges as it’s very open and build more like a cafe than a lounge. I had the chance to check it out recently and here’s my review of that experience.

American Express Hong Kong Centurion Lounge

The American Express Hong Kong Centurion Lounge is a “true” Centurion Lounge and not merely an international Amex Lounge. The difference is that the international lounges aren’t typically as nice and equipped as the Centurion Lounges are. For example, they are often smaller and may not have the same level of food and drink options.

You can find the locations for all true Centurion Lounges below:

  • Location : Terminal D, opposite Gate D17 on the mezzanine

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge Location

The Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge is located in Terminal 1. Take the escalator just before Gate 60 and you should have not problem finding the lounge, which is near the Plaza Premium Lounge and the United Club Lounge There are plenty of signs in the area to help guide you along the way.

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge Hours

The Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge will be open 5:30am to 12:30am.

We made our way to the Amex Centurion Lounge after visiting Cathay Pacific’s first class lounge, The Pier . On our way over to The Pier, we saw the sign for the Centurion Lounge so it only made sense to give it a visit, especially since The Pier is nearby by Gate 63.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Because The Pier was the far superior lounge, we spent the vast majority of our time in that lounge. There, we were able to try out some great dining and experience the day suites and nice bar area as well as lounge around in the cozy seating areas.

The service at The Pier was a bit lackluster, though, and to be honest I felt like we received better service at the Centurion Lounge. However, with that said, I’d still say The Pier is much better and that I just probably caught it on an off day when it came to the service.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Entering the lounge

The entrance to the lounge has the signature Centurion look with blue tinted door and a wall of greenery but it is a bit different from some of the other Centurion Lounges. Many Centurion Lounges are discrete and private but this lounge was wide open to the terminal. Personally, I love the open feel of the Hong Kong lounge more than the closed-off feel of some of the other Centurion Lounges.

Amex Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

We checked in using our Amex Platinum Card as usual and were given the wifi password and asked if we needed to be shown around the lounge. We politely declined and then started to check out the lounge on our own accord.

As soon as you enter the lounge there’s a small business center/meeting room with a work table and a couple of computers along with a printer and a collection of newspapers. This room felt like a great place to set up shop and get some work done if you wanted to be away from the open area of the lounge.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

It also had a TV built into the standard Centurion shelf display. It was cool to see the Centurion design juxtaposed to something different with the decor on the walls.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There’s a small meeting room that you come to next, and I liked the semi-privacy glass walls.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Next, there’s a small room for taking phone calls with the same semi-privacy shading on the glass.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Once we made our way past the meeting and phone room, we came across the signature American Express signage and it started to feel a little bit more like a Centurion Lounge back home. Although, with the area wide open to the terminal below it definitely had a different vibe to it.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge Bar

We then made our way to the main area of the lounge with the bar/cafe area. It’s one of the more spectacular looking bar areas I’ve seen at an airport lounge or even just in general. It’s definitely different from every other Centurion Lounge and it’s a cool place to grab a drink or enjoy your meal as there are a few tables.

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge bar

As you’d expect from a Centurion Lounge, there’s a wide selection of spirits for you to choose from on a complimentary basis. You can also order your espresso from the bar if you don’t wish to make it yourself. They also had both San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna water.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There are multiple juice stations in the lounge.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Centurion Lounges are known for their specialty cocktails and they had some of the common cocktails you find at the Centurion Lounge like the amazing “Blue Door.” We tried out the Rickshaw and thought that it was really great. You could also select from a number of wines.

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge cocktail menu.

There’s an open seating area that has a few tables with chairs and some pretty good views of the tarmac/runway. While I thought the area was impressive from a design and views perspective, it certainly lacked in size compared to other Centurion Lounges.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The seating area is definitely not on the same level that many Centurion Lounges offer in the US. It wasn’t just the size of the seating, either.

Centurion Lounges usually have much more comfortable/cozy seating options great for hunkering down for hours if needed. The seating here is more suited for shorter visits and there’s no true area to “lounge” in — it’s much closer to a cafe feeling, in my opinion. So the lounge (relaxation) element of the Centurion Lounge is missing a here and that is one of the drawbacks to the lounge.

There is also no family room at the Hong Kong Centurion Lounge.

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge Views

The views from the lounge are great. You’re pretty high up and can watch these birds make their way to the runway.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

You’ll probably see mostly Cathay Pacific/Dragon Air but we caught some good views of some others as well.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

With the mountains in the background, this is really a beautiful spot to plane spot.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There’s another seating area with stools lining a long bar where you can enjoy the views while being a little more secluded from the crowds. This area also had power outlets so you can get some work done there as you admire the view.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The chairs/stools in this area looked kind of crazy in this area but I did like them. They were another element that gave off more of a cafe vibe than a lounge vibe, though.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge food

The food at the Hong Kong Centurion Lounge is located in the back of the lounge located near the large and iconic American Express logo seen below.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There was a lot of hot food to choose from, including locally inspired items.

I’d already eaten at The Pier earlier and was trying to save room for our Cathay Pacific first class flight so I didn’t partake in trying out any of the dishes. But here’s a look at some of the items they were serving up, which included shrimp dumplings, pasta, fried fish, pork, mushroom, and a number of cold items like salads, and deli meats.

It looked like a decent spread but keep in mind you’re competing with Cathay Pacific lounges like The Pier at HKG and those amazing noodle bars Cathay has. So again, I definitely wouldn’t prioritize my meal here if I had access to other Cathay Pacific lounges.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

There was also a nice little dessert section.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Some breads were also available. There’s also an expresso machine, soft drinks, tea, and an area for juices, too.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Overall, the food selection was nothing extraordinary. For US lounges it would be pretty good but given the competition of other lounges at HKG, it was not anything special.

Amex Hong Kong Centurion Lounge bathroom

The bathroom was small but very clean and high quality. In the past I’ve been embarrassed for Amex by the sight of the bathroom at the IAH Centurion Lounge, so it was nice to see such a clean Centurion bathroom.

There is a shower suite at the lounge so inquire with the front desk if you’re interested in that.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The Amex Centurion Lounge at HKG is a cool twist on the Centurion experience. It doesn’t offer quite the comfort that lounges back in the US offer, but it’s a very cool looking airport lounge with great drinks and perfect views great for plane spotting. I think it’s a solid plan to combine a Centurion Lounge visit with a visit to another lounge at the airport but I wouldn’t prioritize the Centurion Lounge over Cathay Pacific lounges.

One of the great many perks of the American Express Platinum card ( any variation ) is access to its globally growing Centurion lounge collection. The Hong Kong outpost has been on my list to visit for quite a while, and despite two prior trips through the airport, I hadn’t carved out the time to give it a gander. That all changed this last time through as we didn’t have access to Cathay’s top notch lounges, and had some extra time to kill between flights.

First Impression:

After checking in you’ll walk down a hallway with a work center and a conference room.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Once you round the corner you’ll see the main lounge. One thing I immediately noticed that was different from almost every other Centurion lounge I’ve visited was how relatively uncrowded it was. We were there around 730 or 8pm – so pretty peak times and it wasn’t an absolute madhouse. Yes, it’s busy, but if you compare it to what Miami or SFO looks like at this time…

a group of people sitting at tables in a restaurant

Food and bar options:

Centurion lounges always have an impressive looking bar, and Hong Kong is no different offering one that is aesthetically pleasing as well curated drink options by Jim Meehan of Mandarin Oriental fame.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

At the very back of the lounge are the food options. Typical buffet style that you’ll see at other Centurion lounges – seating is adjacent to the the dining area.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

The Amex Centurion Lounge Hong Kong is a great addition to the overall portfolio of Centurion offerings. Having just been to Club Autus it was a nice comparison to make head to head. I’d give the Centurion lounge the nod on this one. Incredible bar with interesting drinks choices, fast wifi, and fresh and delicious looking food.

The bar’s pretty well stocked:

To me, the buffet wasn’t “exceptional”.

Centurion Space

Another space is only accessible to people with a card Centurion (this card is offered by invitation only by American Express to people with a high level of spending – more than $250,000 per year). So I couldn’t access it.

I had high expectations for this lounge American Express Centurion from Hong Kong, especially after our visits to the other lounges Centurion.

I must admit I was disappointed:

  • Few spaces to sit
  • An ordinary buffet
  • Tables not cleared

However, the choice of drinks was up to the task with the well-stocked bar.

To me, it’s not “a big American Express “span class=”term” data-original-term=”c2Fsb24=”salon”. Let’s hope it’s only “youthful mistakes”!

Live and Let's Fly

Review: American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong (HKG)

The beautiful new american express centurion lounge in hong kong represents an excellent new addition to the amex lounge network..

I arrived at the airport nearly 2.5 hours before my flight to Chicago and thus had plenty of time to relax in the lounge. But I had to get there first, and admittedly had a little trouble finding it. Just follow the signs near Gate 60 in Terminal 1 and you will see it on the upper floor (use the escalator).

Inside the blue glass doors an agent welcomed me and swiped my card. Handing me my card back along with a Wi-Fi card (same password as in U.S. lounge), she wished me a pleasant stay.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Conference Room + Phone Room

As you walk down the hall, on the right is a conference room, phone room, and a small seating area.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Beverages

Turn right at the end of the corridor and you enter the main part of the land, which has a fairly open floor plan. In the center of the lounge is a well-stocked bar, offering a huge selection of alcoholic beverages and most importantly to me, barista-made coffee.

One Mile at a Time reported trouble actually having a custom coffee drink made (he was instead referred to the machine pictured below), but I had no trouble requesting a cappuccino, which turned out beautifully.

Besides the coffee machine, soft drinks and even nicer water like San Pelligrino and Acqua Panna are available.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Dining

A huge buffet offers a wide variety of food. I was present in the mid-morning hours and the brunch spread was even more comprehensive than the food we often see in a U.S. Centurion Lounge. I had already had breakfast and was content with coffee, but the food was certainly better than onboard my United flight to Chicago.

Centurion Lounge Within a Lounge

For Centurion (Black) cardholders, there is a lounge within a lounge offering more personalized service like a la carte dining. The entrance is located near the buffet.

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Showers

In addition to large restrooms, two shower suites are available. I had a look into one and noted they are quite nice, with L’Occitane amenities and a rainhead shower.

The restrooms have real towels:

American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Additional Seating

More seating is available overlooking the terminal concourse below as well as additional tables for dining. Electrical outlets (with USB ports) are well-situated throughout the lounge, though be sure to bring your adaptors.

The latest American Express Lounge outside the USA is a great one, well-worth a visit before your next flight from Hong Kong. Hours of operation are daily from 5:30a to 12:30a. Your Platinum card from American Express entitles you to two additional guests (three for Centurion members).

The downside for me was the uncomfortsble seating. It was all plastic and metal chairs, no leather lounge chairs that you could relax in over a long layover. If you are flying Cathay J/F then don’t waste your time here, just go to the Pier or Wing lounges.

' src=

Agreed if flying CX

If not – I might go to the Centurion for a cocktail, but I still like the SQ lounge more if flying *A.

' src=

All my travels between SFO and Hong Kong have been with Cathay Pacific, so enjoyment of great lounges has never been an issue. This Centurion lounge does look very nice, and should be a great addition to a great airport. I wonder though, if it will have the same absurd overcrowding problems that burden every other Centurion Lounge?

Did not try it. Have you?

I was just going to post the same thing. Seats are really uncomfortable. Was there two months ago. They really need to change the seats. They might look nice but rock hard and small. What a shame.

' src=

I as a I hoping to be excited by this lounge when I went through in November. Felt it missed in most every category other than the bar itself. The selection of spirits was impressive. Uncomfortable seating. Indifferent food selections. After having spent earlier time, on this layover, in the Wing & Pier, I chose to head down to the quite busy Bridge rather than stay. Unless I have no other options, I doubt I will bother to return.

I literally am sitting in the lounge reading your review. Aside from the bartender serving today being the exact one in your photo, my biggest takeaway is your photo taking ability.

Should you stop blogging, which I hope you do not, your photos are stellar. Although the lounge is wonderful, your photos make the lounge look about 15% better than it appears live.

The lounge has a wide open design, and my only issue is there is no place to close your eyes.

I’m with Tim on this one. I was very disappointed and headed back to the Pier. As a person who doesn’t drink alcohol, I didn’t see anything that interested me in this small, cold space. However, your photos are amazing, Matthew. I was a bit hasty and didn’t even see the showers. I guess it deserves a second look.

' src=

Beware terrible bartenders here – pay attention to what they are pouring! They’ll pour the cheapest gin or vodka when you order a mixed drink, even if the menu specifies a specific brand. Expect indignant attitude and a re-made drink with no care or garnish if you point this out. They’ll then stare at you and your company and talk under their breath in the most unprofessional manner until you leave in disgust.

Highly disapointing lounge. Not a chance I’ll go back. An embarrassment to the American Express brand.

' src=

I did not see any mention or pictures of a child’s play room like most of the US Centurion lounges. I assume this lounge does not have one?

I did not see any.

Stopped by Centurion during my long layover to NZ from EWR. The lounge is an open space design and filled with fried food smell. At the airplane to my horror I noticed my jacket smelling like a deep fryer. On the way back from NZ I stopped at the Centurion again and it was the same deep fryer. Had to pay extra for my third child for it allows only two guests, Other than that it was good.

Doesn’t sound like you had a good experience! Qantas Lounge is much better in HKG.

It’s all relative, comparing to general public space my experience was great.

' src=

This lounge is absolute garbage. I think the author probably has not visited many of the quality lounges in Asia. AMEX centurion lounge is among the worst lounges I’ve seen in all Asia.

I’ve visited them all.

' src=

I am Oneworld emerald and frequently visit The Pier, I have a 13 hour layover next week. I just got the Amex Plat. I think I will still visit the Centurion lounge to see what it is like, since I have so much time. But apparently it will not compare to CC F lounges, am I right?

It will not compare. Was just there a couple days ago and it was very crowded as well.

' src=

I would have to politely beg to differ. Loud, crowded uncomfortable seating. Difficult to find a place to make a phone call as it’s essentially a popup within the airport rather than its own enclosed space. Don’t suggest the Phone Room since an entire family was having dinner in the (one) phone area. Dim sum wasn’t bad. Not among my top airport club experiences.

Review: The Centurion Lounge by American Express, Hong Kong Airport (HKG)

Prior to a late-night departure out of Hong Kong Airport, a friend was gracious enough to guest me into the American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong . AmEx opened their first Centurion Lounge outside the U.S. in Hong Kong in 2017, and access is open to a variety of AmEx cardholders (which I’ll detail in the Access and Opening Hours section below).

This was my first time in an AmEx Centurion Lounge, so I wasn’t too sure what expectations to set (in terms of crowding, etc.). Nevertheless, here’s a review detailing The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong’s access policy and opening hours, location, seating, food and beverages, facilities, and service.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Access and Opening Hours

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong is open from 3 PM until 12:30 AM daily, and open to the following AmEx cardholders:

  • Platinum Card, Business Platinum Card, and Corporate Platinum Card members
  • Centurion members
  • (Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Business Reserve Card cardholders have access to the lounge when flying Delta in theory, though there aren’t any Delta flights out of Hong Kong Airport)

Platinum/Business Platinum Card and will be charged a US$50 fee for each guest (two complimentary guests are allowed up until January 31st, 2023), unless they have spent US$75,000 in eligible purchases on the card either that calendar year or the year prior. Centurion Lounge members may enter with two additional guests or immediate family at no additional charge. You can access the lounge from three hours before departure (this only applies to the cardholder, as the guest’s boarding pass isn’t checked).

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Location

The Centurion Lounge is located by gate 60 at Hong Kong Airport, with clear signage pointing up a set of escalators. The (currently still closed) Emirates lounge and Plaza Premium Lounge are located in the same area, with the Centurion Lounge tucked in at the very end.

a hallway with a glass door

My friend’s Platinum Card was scanned, as was his boarding pass – I was simply allowed to enter, without my boarding pass or any other details (for the record, my friend wasn’t on the same flight). We were also asked whether we wanted a WiFi passcode, which we obliged.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Seating and Atmosphere

Once being admitted into the lounge by the friendly lounge agent, we headed down an L-shaped hallway into the main area of the lounge.

a glass wall and a walkway

The main area of the lounge consisted of a fairly large room with a small selection of seating. Much of this seating comprised of wire chairs with butt padding, though there was a small selection of bar seating, bench seating and comfier armchairs available (these were all taken, so it was hard to take pictures).

Despite the fact that many of the comfier chairs were taken (perhaps that’s to say that there weren’t that many to start with), the lounge was much less crowded than I was expecting.

a room with tables and chairs

There was a TV by one of the walls which played the news out loud, but at least it was fairly quiet. Rishi Sunak was promising a “better future” for the UK live at the time of our visit, so perhaps the quiet TV wasn’t a good thing for us…?

a room with a television and tables

There’s a separate area by the hallway which also features wire chair seating. This area stayed unoccupied throughout the duration of our stay.

a table with chairs in a room with a television

This is a pleasant space to spend time, though I wished for more diversity in seating options. Unless I’d missed something, you’re more or less out of luck if you want to nap or lounge.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong WiFi

As aforementioned, I was given a WiFi code when entering the AmEx Centurion Lounge at Hong Kong Airport. Connecting to the WiFi was straightforward, and speeds measured an impressive 69.1 Mbps down and 79 Mbps up, which is above average for WiFi speeds in airline lounges.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Dining Options

The Centurion Lounge doesn’t feature a la carte dining, but does feature a small food spread. I couldn’t open the individual food containers without looking suspicious (given the size of the lounge and the fact that it wasn’t very crowded), but I thought the spread was higher quality than your average non-airline operated lounge.

a buffet line of food

Below are some of the options that I sampled, including mashed potatoes, stir fried vegetables with yam, fish fillet (the fish was specified, though I forgot), as well as fish maw soup. I liked that the selection had a sense of place – while there was a variety of food, you could definitely tell you were in Hong Kong.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Bar

The centerpiece of the AmEx Centurion Lounge Hong Kong is a cocktail bar, which also serves up barista coffee during the day. The lounge partners with bartender Jim Meehan, who works the PDT at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong.

a bar with a counter and chairs

The lounge features an extensive wine menu, though arguably the more exciting selection is the cocktail menu, featured on the right in the photo below. The bartender described to me that “all” of the cocktails were the Centurion Lounge’s signature selection.

a wood menus with blue bands

Intrigued by the use of soy sauce in one of the cocktails, I ordered the Soycar. While I enjoyed it, I didn’t find it to be particularly tasty, and also didn’t think the soy sauce “added” anything to the drink.

a glass of liquid on a table

I then tried the bartender’s Gin Basil Collins, which sounded more like the typical “up my alley” drink, featuring gin, yuzu soda, lemon juice, and simple syrup. You can’t go wrong with that, mmm…

a glass of lemonade with a straw

For those who don’t drink, as far as I’m aware, the lounge can nix the liquor from any of the drinks in the menu (since they’re freshly prepared) to create a tasty mocktail. I’m not sure how a Virgin Soycar would go down, though.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Facilities

While I wasn’t in need of any facilities in particular, I noticed quite a few facilities at the Centurion Lounge. The lounge features a shower room, though unfortunately it was occupied when I tried to photograph it.

a door with a sign on it

The lounge features bathrooms as well, so you won’t have to exit the lounge to use the bathrooms in the terminal.

Furthermore, the lounge has a meeting room, should you want to call somebody, or have a meeting with the guests/fellow cardholders in the lounge.

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong Service

All of the people I interacted with at the AmEx Centurion Lounge Hong Kong were a delight. They were attentive, and plates were cleared quickly. While I ordered my first drink at the bar, a server proactively asked if I wanted a second drink, and brought it to me when it was prepared. (She even encouraged my friend to try a cocktail as well, though he wanted to stay sober for his flight.)

The bartenders were also clearly enthusiastic about their job, and had all sorts of exciting descriptions and recommendations about the drinks I tried. I have nothing but good things to say about the staff working at this lounge.

Conclusion: The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

The Centurion Lounge Hong Kong is a small, exclusive lounge that’s a pleasure to visit. I’d say that the experience of visiting this lounge is made significantly better by their bar and cocktails, though I suppose otherwise it’s still a decent offering for a credit card-access lounge, since there’s plenty of free seats and the food is above average as well.

It’s a shame that Platinum Card members will soon have to pay extra for guests to access the lounge. The utility of the lounge does vary heavily according to whether you like cocktails or not, since there’s not otherwise any reason to spend more time here than necessary. Hong Kong Airport’s terminal is a very pleasant place to spend time in , so I don’t think I’d shell out the extra US$50 to be guested into the lounge, unless I was specifically seeking out a cocktail experience with a mate.

More From YTHK

Alvin, information from the other well known blogs such as OMAAT and View from the Wing are very US-centric, and so it may be worth checking whether the information they provide apply equally in HK.

It appears that the guesting policy changes (i.e. US$50 guest fee) you refer to only apply to US-issued Amex Platinum cards (see https://global.americanexpress.com/lounge-access/the-platinum-card?locale=en-US&extlink=va-us-CPS-LFfindalounge ).

The corresponding page for HK-issued Amex Platinum cards makes no mention of the guesting policy change (see https://global.americanexpress.com/lounge-access/the-platinum-card?locale=en-HK ).

I did see this – genuinely I’m not sure, as there’s no other mention of this. Non-U.S. cardholders that I know seem to have received news of a policy change, though.

I don’t recall having received any notice of it myself, but maybe I missed an email or two…!

If the policy change also applies to HK-based cardholders, then I will seriously consider terminating the card, as it would represent a big perk loss for me (i.e. bringing my kids into the lounge as well (and they are *generally* well behaved!)). The only other benefits that would be left, and that I think are worth having, would be the Hilton Gold status and the travel insurance when you pay with the card.

Well written article. Perhaps need to mention once you enter, on the far right of the lounge there is another side for Centurion card member. This part is only accessible for Centurion Card holder plus up to 3 guests. They serve different food and drinks, with full services like restaurant. Where you can have baked pork pastry, prawns with black truffles and wagyu beef.

Travel Tips

Travel tuesday: amex centurion hong kong lounge review.

american express centurion yacht hong kong

Even though I’ve been an American Express Platinum cardmember since 2019, prior to last month, I had only been to three Centurion Lounge locations: LAS (multiple times), PHL, and CLT. That’s partially because my travel took a bit of a dip soon after gaining my card (for obvious reasons) and also because my Delta loyalty usually means that a visit to the Sky Club makes more sense. However, I recently had a chance to check another Centurion Lounge location off of my list as my wife and I visited the lounge at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).

Given the fact that this international Centurion Lounge is a bit unique, I thought it was worth taking a closer look at the location and sharing some of my thoughts.

Navigating to the lounge

The secured area of the Hong Kong International Airport is pretty wild. It always blows my mind just how many different levels and means of transportation there are. The gate numbering can also be intimidating when you see signs for “Gates 501-530” (there aren’t actually 500+ gates but, given the number of escalators you may take, you might happen to believe there could be). All of this is to say that getting to the Centurion Lounge at HKG as well as making it to your gate afterward may require some time. Luckily, however, neither step of the process took as long as I had feared.

Hong Kong’s Centurion Lounge is located in Terminal 1 on Level 7 near Gate 60. Following signs from where we entered the terminal, we were directed to take the People Mover. Once we exited, it was pretty easy to find signs for the lounge area. From the main floor, you do go up one level and will likely pass some other lounges (including a Chase Sapphire Lounge) on your way to the Centurion. In all, it was probably less than 15 minutes from where we were in the terminal to the lounge — so definitely not too bad.

Incidentally, while we assumed that we’d take the People Mover back to our gate, it turns out that wasn’t actually necessary. Instead, we could walk down the admittedly long hallway of gates to catch our Korean Air flight. Again, it took maybe 10 to 15 minutes to get there from the Centurion. With that said, if you do have a flight departing from the 200 or 500 gates, you’ll likely want to give yourself a bit more time to get over there.

Hours and entry

Considering that our flight to Incheon was scheduled to depart at 12:45 a.m., I was excited to see that HKG’s Centurion Lounge was open until midnight. Meanwhile, those with earlier flights will be glad to know that the location also opens at 7 a.m. In our experience of staying until (near) closing time, the staff did a great job at first informing us that last call for food and beverages would be at 11:30 p.m. as well as then coming around and reminding guests of this deadline as it was approaching.

As for entry, American Express Platinum cardmembers are welcome — but, as a reminder, guests are no longer complimentary unless cardholders spend at least $75,000 a year on their card. While I don’t meet that threshold, my wife is an authorized user on the account, so we were both able to gain access.

Akin to other Centurion locations, cardmembers can generate an entry pass within the Amex app. However, when I first presented this at the front desk, they instead asked to start with my boarding pass and my passport. They also made sure my wife did have her own Platinum card (along with her passport and boarding pass). With that formality out of the way, we were welcomed in.

Layout and design

Even though I’d seen a couple of photos of this lounge location before, I was still a bit surprised once I entered. That’s because, rather than being a closed-off area, the whole space felt quite open. This is best demonstrated in this photo I found on the Centurion site that shows how the majority of the lounge can be fully seen from across the way:

view into the American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

I didn’t dislike this layout… but it was definitely different. At certain times, I could also see it being a bit louder than other locations since the sounds of the terminal can easily work their way in. Yet, perhaps because it was late at night, this was hardly an issue during our visit.

The other aspect that surprised me about the HKG lounge was the size. According to a press release from 2017, the location is around 8,000 square feet. Compare that to the 15,000-square-foot JFK location or the upcoming 26,000-square-foot lounge at ATL and, yeah, it’s not exactly huge. Nevertheless — likely thanks again to our timing — we had no problem finding a comfortable spot to set up.

Beyond the main seating area (which did include a few different seating style options), there was also a meeting room. No one was in this room when we were there and I don’t know if there are policies for requesting to use it, but it looked pretty nice.

Food and beverage

Like any good airport lounge, the HKG Centurion features a full-service bar as well as a number of food selections. In terms of the latter, we noticed both Eastern and Western-centric options — and some that could really go either way, such as fried vegetable dumplings. Even though we arrived at the lounge around 11 p.m., there was still hot food available alongside cold drinks (and, come to think of it, warm drinks as well).

My wife had a chance to try two of the lounge’s specialty cocktails. First up was the Gin Basil Collins, which features Botanist Gin, Kimono Yuzu Soda, lemon juice, and simple syrup. The other drink she got to taste was the Blue Door, consisting of Johnny Walker Black, Myer’s Dark Rum, Benedictine, and lemon juice. I should note that, while she was enjoying that beverage, I abruptly told her we needed to leave as an issue with our digital boarding passes sent me into a panic. Hopefully that didn’t color her review too much.

In a first, I’m now going to turn the keyboard over to her to share her food and beverage experience:

The Gin Basil Collins was unique, refreshing, and the perfect treat before another multi-hour flight. I could taste all of the components but nothing was overpowering. The Blue Door was very interesting and the anise-flavored liqueur was pronounced. It wasn’t the “magic” cocktail I was hoping for but it is something I’d revisit again. Of the two, I’d return to the Collins first. Compared to some other lounges, the buffet initially seemed limited, but considering the size of the lounge, it more than met guest needs. I always appreciate that the lounges offer hot food that’s actually hot (I had chicken and rice), and fresh selections like fruit (yay, pineapple) and vegetables. This lounge had a few finger food selections at the bar (a first in my experience) including tuna salad in mini tart shells, sliced cheese, crackers, nuts, dried fruit and honeycomb! I didn’t indulge in the honeycomb but found it fascinating that it was offered that way. Per our usual tradition, we split a brownie and also enjoyed a cup of tea, feeling very grateful that even across the world there were desserts that suited my very American palate.

So, there you have it. Personally, I’m not big on eating or drinking much before flights, but as my wife mentioned, it was nice to share a cup of tea and a sweet treat. I also enjoyed the few small bites of food I stole from her plate. Overall, if you’re hungry or thirsty, I’m fairly confident you’ll find something to enjoy at this lounge location.

Other amenities

Beyond the food, drink, and generally relaxing atmosphere, the HKG Centurion has at least one other amenity to offer: a shower. While I’ve taken advantage of shower facilities at Delta Sky Clubs, I’ve never used one at a Centurion Lounge… and the Hong Kong location is no exception. Having only noticed the shower while on my way to the restroom, I didn’t inquire about procedures for requesting the facility. But, if you do need to make use of this option, I’m sure the friendly staff at the lounge can help you out.

Final Thoughts on the Amex Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

two seats, a small table, a dog painting in American Express Centurion Lounge Hong Kong

Technically, there are plenty of lounges at Hong Kong International Airport that I should be able to access with my Priority Pass. But, when it came down to where I wanted to spend my pre-departure time at the airport, I knew I wanted something relatively familiar. That’s what the airport’s Amex Centurion Lounge offered for the most part — yet the experience was unlike other locations I’ve had the chance to visit.

The HKG Centurion’s open feel and relatively small size do make it a bit of an anomaly as lounges continue to grow larger and larger. Despite this, the lounge still proves to be a great place to grab a drink, a bite, or even a shower before your flight. What’s more, all of the staff we interacted with were top-notch.

Ultimately, while the American Express Centurion Lounge in Hong Kong may not go down as one of my favorites once I’ve had the opportunity to check out more of them, I still think it’s a solid option for Platinum cardholders visiting HKG. And, if it proves to not be your cup of tea, then there are other lounges nearby that you can try instead.
