Gambling Taxes for Ohio Casinos

Navigating the world of gambling taxes in Ohio can seem daunting, but we’re here to help you understand it. As a player, it’s crucial to know that if you win $5,000 or more at Ohio casinos, the casino will automatically withhold 24% of your winnings. This deduction covers all the applicable federal taxes.

In addition to this, the casino will provide you with a Form W2-G, also known as the “Certain Gambling Winnings” form. This form will display the total amount you won, the amount that has been withheld, your personal information, and other small details. You’ll be asked to provide your tax ID number or social security number to the casino for this purpose.

Now, if you have smaller wins, the casino won’t withhold any money. However, don’t be misled into thinking you won’t owe gambling taxes in Ohio. You’re still required to report these winnings to the IRS on your own.

Always remember, it’s your responsibility to report and pay any taxes on your gambling winnings, regardless of the amount. Stay informed and play responsibly .

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful overnight stay followed by the most delicious breakfast buffet we have ever had! Upon arrival we learned we had been moved from the lodge into the main resort handicap accessible room which was spacious and very nice and clean. This also made a late night trip to the casino more enjoyable than walking back to the lodge across the parking lot. The hotel carpet is worn and buckled in the halls so watch your step and the pool/hot tub area is pretty nasty but the rest of the hotel is gorgeous. The breakfast buffet is so delicious it is worth a drive just to enjoy the food! The casino could use a few more updated machines. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would definitely enjoy going back.

Dear Joan B We thank you for your feedback. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Please visit us again soon as we just reopened our Christmas Casino for 2017. Sincerely Laura W

Accommodations were OK. Hotel is getting a little run down. Carpet in main halls is worn and stained. Furniture in rooms is dated. Our room had a musty smell and the whole hotel smelled of cigarette smoke. Not worth $200. Restaurant was fine, we had cheeseburgers in the bar area and they were really good. Wait staff was great. Casino itself was ok, but same issue, a little run down. Machines with lights out,etc...

Dear crtrip665, We appreciate your feedback. I will share your comments with our management staff. We hope that you will choose to be our guest again in the future. Sincerely Laura W

I visited the rising star the end of 2016, Around the time they were decorating for Christmas. It was so beautiful. I loved the casino, the people were friendly, the staff was great and so on. I just loved the decorations. I had taken more videos than photos, wish I can share. I am a big fan of staying in nice rooms. The hotel was nice even downstairs, where there was a bootleg Starbucks....the room wasn't all that..but when you are having fun and drinking and in the casino and mingling-the room is just to lay down. But they were definitely clean.

the room was clean and everything worked. the bed was comfortable and it was nice having a desk for the lap top. various tv channels when you take a break for casino. the staff was really nice and gace me extra coffee for the room.

Dear Sherry T We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay! Please visit us again soon! Sincerely Laura W

I have reviewed the hotel at this casino before and it wasn't good. I was disappointed with the cleanliness and the decor. This time my opinion of the hotel has changed because we stayed in the LODGE, not the main hotel. This section was built about maybe 2 years ago. It still smells like New carpeting. It is very modern. I hope as impressed. A nice thing for us was that for some reason we were given a handicapped room, so It was super large. This room was free for us because my husband had points, but paying for our room would have been worth it.

Dear Melissa R We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the Lodge hotel! We appreciate your feedback! Sincerely Laura W

Indiana Riverboat Casinos

Indiana Riverboat Casino

Riverboat Casinos in Indiana offer players a one of a kind unique gambling experience.

Indiana, like many other states, has recently expanded its gambling laws.  The Hoosier State has a rich history of gambling, with Indiana horse racing dating back to the 1800s. In Indiana, sports betting is legal, and residents can download mobile sports betting apps to wager on their favorite teams and sports on the go. For example, BetRivers Indiana is one of the online gambling sites currently available in the Hoosier State. As well as betting on sport, Indiana residents can now participate in casino gambling, but only at sweeps casinos.

In terms of casino gaming, there is also legislation that Sen. Jon Ford has introduced to bring new Indiana casino laws to fruition. The Indiana legislature accepted the proposals. Ford predicts that online casinos could bring in between $45-60 million  worth of tax revenue every year. For now, players can only access sweepstakes casinos in Indiana , with sites like Chumba Casino , Pulsz , BetRivers.net , and games like LuckyLand paving the way. These sites will still offer your favorite casino game, but you will be playing for virtual currency instead of real money.

The legalization of iGaming would build on the revenue generated by current land-based casinos in Indiana . Indiana gambling law authorizes ten land-based or riverboat casinos on the Ohio River or Lake Michigan, one physical casino in French Lick, and racinos at the two horse tracks in the state.

Ohio Gambling Laws

The state of Ohio has a very complicated set of gambling laws. To steer clear of trouble, stick to gambling in recognized and licensed casinos and racinos. For more information on the Ohio state gambling laws, read here .

Here’s a list of the most pertinent laws for gambling in Ohio.

This law outlines clearly that gambling for consistent income is illegal.

The state here defines gambling comprehensively as any facilitation of games of chance for profit

This law outlines what kinds of game winnings are taxable.

Ohio has a strange and interesting history where gambling is concerned, while casino gambling is very newly legal in the state, other forms of gambling have been around for a very long time. Those who were pro-gaming struggled to have casinos legalised for a long time. Here’s the timeline for you.

Whilst much of the specific law in Ohio around gambling remains shrouded in grey areas and confusion, legal casino gambling in the above-mentioned 10 casinos is perfectly fine, and quite enjoyable!

Ohio history image

1933 In the year 1933 Ohio’s general assembly legalised horse race betting, which still thrives at 6 different racinos to this day.

1980 – 2009 In the year 1980 the state legalised the first lottery by popular vote, of which there are a few variations even now. In the same year the assembly vetoed the push for the legalisation of casinos. In the following years there were another two pushes for casino gambling, and one for legalised riverboat gambling, all of which were denied.

2009 – Present Eventually, in 2009, four cities were given the green light to host licensed casinos. These four cities are now the most thriving places in the state.

Upcoming Changes in the Gambling Regulation

In September of 2019, two bills from both sides of the isle were put forward to legalize sports betting on professional and college sporting events. Most believe the bill will pass positively in the next few months. This will usher in a whole new stream of gaming revenue for the state.

Ohio Casino Resorts and Trips

Casino resorts differ from other kinds of casinos in that they offer accommodation and other amenities not normally found at casinos. Ohio does not currently have any resort type casinos but one massive one is on the books for completion in 2021 in Lebanon, OH.

Casino Resorts

While casinos themselves offer no hotels, there is one particularly popular accommodation site near one of the most visited casinos in Ohio.

Casino Trips

Casino trips are dedicated tours to one or more casinos on a route. It’s designed for those who like the idea of gaming on the go, seeing more than one casino, and experiencing the thrill of travel all at the same time.

A Guide To The Most Iconic Riverboat Casinos In The US

Jetset Times

Talk about casino destinations and you’ll most likely think of Las Vegas, Atlantic City or, if you are travelling outside the US, maybe Monaco or Macau.

Amelia Belle Casino

Yet what are called “land based” or “bricks and mortar” casinos to differentiate them from the online versions are not necessarily on land or made of bricks and mortar.

We refer, of course, to riverboat casinos, a little slice of Americana that’s as American as Super Bowl Sunday or Thanksgiving turkey. Riverboat casinos conjure up images of the Mississippi and Mark Twain complete with white suit, top hat and cigar. There are more than 60 riverboat casinos operating in the USA and every single one of them has a story to tell. Here, we highlight a handful of the very best.

The Grand Victoria, Elgin

Our first stop is not on the Mississippi at all, but on the Fox River in Elgin, 50 miles north west of Chicago . Owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment, the Grand Victoria really is a slice of Las Vegas on the Illinois waterfront.  With more than 1,000 slots and video poker terminals and 36 tables, there’s a great choice of games.

If all that gambling whets your appetite, there are four dining options on board, including the highly rated Buckingham’s Steakhouse and Lounge.

Casino Queen, Marquette

The Casino Queen would look like a lifeboat if it was moored alongside the Grand Victoria, but that is all part of its charm. It offers a more intimate and personalized experience, and although there are only eight tables, they host an intriguing variety of games that are not commonly found in land (or water) based casinos. If you know how to gamble online in the US , you’ve probably seen fusion blackjack and 21+3 at US online casinos. The Casino Queen gives you an opportunity to play them in real casino surroundings.

When you step ashore, there is an adjacent 31-acre entertainment complex with a variety of attractions and a huge choice of dining options.

The Amelia Belle, Amelia

At last, we arrive in Louisiana, where the Amelia Belle lies nestled in the Avoca Island Cutoff waterway. This classic four-story riverboat looks like it has stepped straight out of a photograph from the turn of the 20 th century. When it is lit up at night, it takes your breath away.

At the tables, poker is the order of the day. The casino offers Mississippi stud, 3-card poker and Texas Holdem. There are also 800 slot games, while the Fanduel sportsbook has self-service betting kiosks, a wall full of television screens, and a huge video wall to show the biggest events.

Sam’s Town, Shreveport

On the opposite side of Louisiana, Sam’s Town could not be more different to the Amelia Belle. This floating leisure complex houses a hotel, health spa, sauna and live entertainment venue.

The casino offers more than 1,000 slots and 30 table games that include blackjack, roulette, baccarat, Let it Ride and Craps No More.

Case Studies

River boat casino, indiana.

Problem :  A major challenge to the Port Engineer and Head of Operations at the largest riverboat casino in the world, located in Indiana, has been the riverboat’s source of condenser water, which is pulled straight out of the Ohio River.

riverboat casino in ohio

Typical condenser approach temperatures on one of the four 450-ton chillers, fully loaded, would be about two to three degrees with fairly clean tubes. The casino has been able to monitor the condenser approach and, unfortunately, has had to shut down the chillers frequently to clean the tubes when the approach gets up to six or seven degrees.

Depending on the load, water temperatures and the mud or debris in the river, the frequency of the high approach temperatures would vary. In the summer months all four chillers are needed for comfort cooling on the boat, but summer is also when the river is the hottest and dirtiest. The casino would typically have to shut a chiller down about once a month to brush the tubes just to keep the chillers from tripping on high head pressure. The bottom rows of tubes were even completely plugged in some of the condenser tubes.

Results : The casino installed the Automatic Tube Brushing System on all four chillers in May, 2002. In June, a one-month follow-up showed that the ATB System had not only performed as promised, but had actually improved the chiller performance. At 75% load, one chiller was showing less than half a degree approach temperature. The other chillers were operating at less than two degrees approach.

At the end of July, all four chillers were running at full load. Usually, by this time the chiller operators would have already had to clean the condenser tubes manually because the approach temperatures would have been excessive. With the ATB System installed, approach temperatures on all four units were less than two degrees, which indicates very clean tubes.

In November, another follow-up showed that all four chillers were still operating at less than two degrees on the approach temperatures. After more than a year of operation, the Head of Operations at the casino claims to have received a payback in less than six months.
