U.S. WOMEN'S OPEN

U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying At Duxbury Yacht CLUB

For immediate release: june 7, 2023.

DUXBURY, Massachusetts – Despite overcast skies and chilly temperatures, a strong field of U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying hopefuls produced plenty of red numbers over a 36-hole day at The Duxbury Yacht Club. With just three spots available in the field at Pebble Beach Golf Club, top professionals and amateurs from around the world teed it up.

Perrine Delacour took home medalist honors with rounds of 67-68, good for a -9 under total.

Hailing from Laon, France, Delacour is a member of the LPGA Tour and has one previous appearance at the U.S. Women’s Open (T-40 in 2020). Delacuor turned pro in 2013. She most recently competed in the Mizuho America’s Open, tying for 43rd, and the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play, placing 9th. One major career highlight includes representing France in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I’m really happy, first time I made it through a qualifier, and the way I made it, it was pretty solid,” said Delacuor. “Going to Pebble Beach is a dream come true.”

Her first round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 6th hole: “I was going to hit my driver no matter what. I thought I pulled it and the group in front of us said it was on the green eight feet away from the hole.”

“I knew it was going to be windy in the morning, so I stayed patient,” Darquea said, “I tried my best effort on the par fives, I knew I could reach most of them, that was important.” She hopes to be able to pull off another 8-under-par at Pebble Beach as well.

On the heels of finishing her senior season at the University of Georgia, Céleste Dao took third place and low amateur honors, after firing rounds of 68 and 70. Dao tallied 9 birdies over the course of her two rounds. The Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, Quebec , native has made it through qualifying in Massachusetts twice before, taking medalist honors at Cape Cod National in 2018 and earning a spot at TPC Boston in 2019, before missing the cut in each of her U.S. Women’s Open appearances.

Dao’s thoughts throughout the day were to “hang on and have fun.” This is her third time heading to a US Women’s Open. “I’m really excited, third time’s a charm hopefully.”

About Duxbury Yacht Club

As implied in its name, Duxbury Yacht Club was founded in 1875 as a home for sailing. About a century ago it was the second-largest yachting center in the state. Located on Duxbury Bay on the north shore of Plymouth Harbor, the club has since expanded into many sports, including golf and tennis. When they weren’t sailing, golf became a popular activity for club members, and six makeshift holes were laid out in 1901 on what was known as Parker’s Pasture.

More land was purchased in 1926 and with the help of architect Wayne Stiles, the course had nine excellent holes. It was renovated in 1951 under the guidance of William Mitchell, and in 1969 the club hired Geoffrey Cornish to design an additional nine holes.

Records from the club’s rich history in golf and tennis hang in the rustic Sprague-Parker barn, which dates back to the 18th century and serves as the clubhouse. With nautical flags hanging above, there’s a fireplace with the year 1875 inscribed and a horseshoe that was unearthed during a renovation project in 1998 and remains hanging for good luck.

The club has a familiar-friendly moniker and it has always prioritized athletic, activity-sport-like competition over social activities. It has even been referred to as “The Best Day Camp In The World.”

Sanford Golf Design has overseen a 10-year master plan

Renovation work will begin next month at Duxbury Yacht Club in Massachusetts, USA, the final phase of a master plan that was first developed by Sanford Golf Design in 2008.

The club was founded in 1875 and in the 1920s a nine-hole course designed by Wayne Stiles was built. It was renovated in 1951 under the guidance of William Mitchell and in 1969 the club hired Geoffrey Cornish to design an additional nine.

Randall Grills, head professional at Duxbury Yacht Club, says: “The critical elements at Duxbury Yacht Club golf course that require upgrading are clear. Bunkers have been lost over the years, which detracts from the strategic quality and aesthetics of the course. Tees have become narrow and unlevelled due to years of topdressing and wear; new tees should be added to stretch the course. Some trees should be removed to open up air circulation and light for proper turf growth.

“The general strategy and aesthetics of the original design have diminished over the past 50 years. All of these issues are common to private clubs after years of constant wear and tear with limited operating and capital investment.”

Duxbury turned to Sanford Golf Design to develop a master plan for the golf course in 2008. Following their recommendations, the club began work to improve drainage, expand greens and remove trees. Work continued over the next decade with renovations made to tees and bunkers.

Golf course architect John Sanford has a long-time connection to the club. “The project at Duxbury is a very special one for me. In the early 1960s my family lived in Duxbury and my dad played golf there during the baseball off season,” said Sanford. “Also, my original inspiration to be a golf course architect was from Bill Mitchell who was our neighbour in West Palm Beach, Florida.”

In 2018, Sanford Golf Design was retained to update the master plan.

“Our scope of work for this project is to restore all bunkers, new tees to accommodate all levels of play, redesign of some fairways, replace 25 acres of maintained turf with unirrigated native fescues, new carts paths where needed, expanded practice tee, and a new short game area,” said David Ferris of Sanford Golf Design.

“One of the primary objectives is to enhance the simplicity of our combined meadows and rolling landscape,” said Grills. “Keeping more to the original Stiles design of natural ridge lines and features that blend seamlessly into the West Campus landscape. There will be some lengthened holes, but not distance for distance’s sake, and many new forward tees to expand our composite yardage. All these changes are intended to provide a variety of fun and memorable holes that can be enjoyed by every demographic and skill level of golfer.”

NMP Golf Construction will be the contractor for the project, with On-Course Golf and National Lawn Sprinklers also involved.

“We are excited for golfers to see the course after we have completed the reshaping of several holes and have improved the aesthetics and strategy of the course,” said Ferris.

“Nine holes were originally designed by Wayne Stiles, and the old plans indicating strategy were studied, and bunker and tee placements adjusted accordingly. The nine holes added by Cornish have different character and part of the plan is to unify the bunker styles so that the Cornish holes complement the Stiles holes.”

Grills said: “Duxbury has tremendous potential to stand out as one of the best and most beautiful courses in New England. The course is a ‘core’ layout, meaning houses do not separate the holes from one another. Additionally, the gentle rolling topography, on the front nine adds interest and shot-making opportunities.

“There is a wonderful cover of trees at Duxbury. Subsequently, there is not much need for a large-scale planting program. The addition of native fescue grass in out of play areas will help create definition and colour contrast throughout the course. This is an inexpensive and effective way to improve aesthetics.”

The course is expected to reopen in summer 2020.

Club History

The Plymouth Yacht Club obtained its charter from the state on June 5, 1890, but the club actually existed longer than that. It organized a few seasons earlier (a charter was the 19th century equivalent of today’s incorporation) and a trophy held the Watson family descendants today honors the winner of a race held May 30, 1890. The Old Colony Memorial, two or three times a summer in the mid-1880s, recorded the results of sailboat races which included many of the boat owners who later became charter members of the yacht club. One of the best regattas, according to the weekly newspaper, was held July 4, 1889. That same year, members obtained clubhouse space among other buildings on Long Wharf, about where the State Pier is today. A structure, 20 20 ft., with a 2nd floor balcony, was built for the new club – one of the first buildings in town to use newfangled electric lights. It blew down in the Portland Storm of 1898 and the club’s headquarters moved across Water Street. Its last location was at the junction of Winslow and Water Streets. Yachting was a young sport in that era. Although the New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844, yachting didn’t grow as a sport until after the Civil War. Then the nation entered a long period of economic prosperity that gave birth to a middle class with disposable income to use during the newly invented summer vacation. By the last quarter of the 19th century, yacht clubs were organizing to hold competitions featuring contemporary workboats in glossy, yachty versions: small spritsail-rigged boats and catboats in several sizes. A pewter trophy cup awarded to 23 year-old George Shiverick for taking second place in an 1893 race bears an engraving of a catboat that appears to be about 25 ft. long.

An “Association Race” on August 31, 1899, as recorded in Manning’s Yacht Register–1900, sailed a course outside Plymouth Harbor in light southwest winds with elapsed times of two to two and a-half hours. Class D included 25-ft. cabin catboats; Class L had 21-ft. decked boats and Class Y, 21-ft. cabin catboats. A “Second Special Class” sailed a shorter inside course over a one to one and a-half hour period. Many of the same larger catboats raced in competitions at Quincy Yacht Club “off Houghs Neck” and at the Hull Yacht Club “off Nahant,” according to Manning’s.

The concept of the one-design class was still in the future when the Plymouth Yacht Club was organized, but Shiverick’s Boat Yard in Kingston eventually turned out many of the early class boats raced at Plymouth and at Duxbury; among them, Massachusetts 15s, about 25 ft. LOA but 15 ft. LWL; a class of 17 ft. decked catboats; and later, some of the 18 ft. Duxbury Ducks, a John Alden design.

In 1925, the Pilgrim Yacht Club was organized a group of mainly summer residents (many of whom later became year-round residents). This club was first situated at the end of Howe’s Lane near Jabez Corner — not much water  for the fleet of Baybirds they acquired. After incorporating in 1928, the club in 1929 bought the old Atwood Lumber Company Building and Doten’s Wharf, where today’s Plymouth Yacht Club is located. The Pilgrim Yacht Cluh soon had a fleet of about 25 Duxbury Ducks which they sailed in competition with the fleet of over 60 Ducks in the Duxbury Yacht Club (founded 1894, incorporated 1895).

By the early 1930s, the Plymouth Yacht Club’s membership and activity had dwindled. The clubhouse had become “just a boat club’s place to store their oars,” in the words of one observer. On the other hand, the Pilgrim Yacht Club was thriving. It hired a steward and a sailing instructor and held regular events in season at the clubhouse – dinners, dances, bridge parties, and clambakes on Long Beach. It wasn’t long before someone came up with the idea of seeking a union of the two yacht clubs.

A major reason for this union would be for the “new” yacht club to become old!! The annual yachting registers always listed the yearly race results the age of the club. The New York Yacht Club occupied the top slot as the nation’s #1 yacht club. Plymouth was listed as #125. By the turn of the 20th century, there were hundreds of yacht clubs in the USA. (Today, there are over 1,500 active clubs.)

Since the Pilgrim Yacht Club facilities were far superior to what the nearly moribund Plymouth Yacht Club had, it is unlikely there was much opposition to the union which took place in the winter of 1938-39. The following summer, regattas were held under the “old” three-starred, red burgee and the blue-and-white Pilgrim Yacht Club burgee was retired.

After World War II, the club began to grow again. The Junior Member’s organization was strengthened; the season extended into October; and new classes of sailboats were introduced. A full-time steward was hired in 1970 which enabled keeping the clubhouse open for activities year-round. Eventually the clubhouse was expanded the addition of a large function room in 1977. Acquisition of the Kyle property next door helped with increased parking capabilities, relocation of the Junior Clubhouse, and a needed workshop for the steward.

In 1988, a full-time clubhouse manager was added to the staff of the Plymouth Yacht Club; the steward focused on waterfront activities. The sailing program for youngsters grew through the 1990s, developing winning sailors in competition with other clubs, including the International 420 regatta hosted at PYC in 1999. The interest of many PYC members in larger cruising sailboats has led to a growing Performance Handicap Racing Fleet; skippers of these boats have offered “big boat” experience to sailing students. An evening program of sailing instruction for adults was launched in 1996. Another new program called “First Wave” started in 1995 for youngsters who are not ready for sailing lessons, familiarizing them with the waterfront and safety regulations. The popularity of this program led to the introduction of the “Second Wave” providing two levels of pre-sailing programs.
