In my 10-year career in the yachting industry, I’ve found the best overall pair of sailing boots are the Gill Tall Yachting Boot.

However, the equation has more nuance. It really depends on what discipline of sailing you need them for. I’ve highlighted the best for each scenario below:

By pulling the outer layer up and over your foul-weather trouser, you will now have an extra layer of waterproofing and repellence from water ingress. A drawstring is at the top of the boot to seal off the top.

You may ask why you would take a pair of leather boots out to sea. Dubarry has perfected its construction to be fully waterproof and breathable. As a result, they are incredibly strong and supple when salt water soaks the outside. But they’ll remain bone dry on the inside.

A hexagonal pattern on the outer sole provides loads of grip in slippery conditions and the ability to move around freely. It’s an award-winning design, as well as being non-marking. Heel and toe reinforcements provide extra layers of protection from stubbing and bumping into deck hardware.

I have personally used these deck boots from Gul, and they are great value for money. Yacht crew routinely use these as working boots, and they hold up against harsh chemicals and cleaning products, as well as the Xtratuf Legacy Boots.

They also make for fantastic bargain sailing boots. The full-length high top features a drawstring closure to ensure a watertight seal so that you won’t have water falling inside the boot.

A razor-cut chevron patterned outsole provides plenty of grip in wet and slippery conditions. Additional support at the ankle means the boot is comfortable all day long. And extra protection at the heel and toe provides confidence around deck hardware.

These rubber boots provide you with full waterproofing. However, you will need warm socks if you are boating in colder conditions. But they will keep your feet dry.

These are another pair of boots I have used extensively in the yachting industry. They too, hold up better than expected against cleaning products and chemicals.

The most surprising of which is their resilience to teak two-parting products. If a pair of boots can make it through that, then I will personally certify them as durable.

They feature a razor-cut chevron patterned outsole to give you plenty of grip on the deck, and they are also quick-drying due to the polyester lining. Like the Gul boots above, you will need warm socks for cold-weather sailing.

With reinforcement in the heel, toe, and instep, you won’t need to watch every step, and there is added abrasion resistance around the base of the boot.

They are made from 100% rubber, which I have experienced as highly durable even if you decide to put them through their paces.

Tall boots vs. short boots.

Most sailing boots are eight high top or low cut. Ultimately it depends on what you’ll be doing out on the water. I’d recommend using a high boot for sailing because it works in unison with your foul-weather gear.

Having a short boot when wearing foul-weather trousers or bibs may cause a hindrance, and water will most definitely make its way inside the boot. The short boot makes sense if you use them for dinghy sailing, as you won’t want bulky footwear as you move around.

Single Layer and Multi-layers

Single-layer (typically rubber) boots are for most entry-level sailors. You get fully waterproof capability and non-slip outsoles. However, the rubber won’t keep your feet warm in cold weather sailing.

Getting a multi-layer boot is recommended if you are sailing in colder conditions. Dubarry makes the warmest boots on the market with their Gore-tex Thinsulate lining to keep the inside once and toasty.

Lastly, neoprene boots like the Gill Offshore fit snugly against the leg to aid in warmth. An out waterproof material keeps them waterproof. These boots are best for sailing conditions where you’ll encounter lots of sea spray and rain.

Breathability

Rubber boots don’t afford your feet breathability, so you need to consider this in your buying decision. If you are doing intense sailing, your feet will start to sweat, so the condensation can’t escape. Ultimately you’ll end up with wet feet and, by default, cold feet.

A boot made with neoprene will also trap moisture inside the boot. They will, however, keep your feet warm, which means you can still wear them for long periods.

Leather boots are breathable, so moisture can still escape. These are the best option to keep your feet dry and give you superior warmth.

Do you wear socks with sailing boots.

I always strongly recommend wearing socks with your sailing boots because they can help prevent blisters and provide warmth in cold weather. Socks can also absorb sweat and prevent foul smells from making their home inside your sailing boots.

There are several types of socks that can be worn with sailing boots, including:

Thick, cushioned socks: These socks provide extra padding and support for your feet, which is helpful when spending long periods of time out on the deck in inclement weather.

Moisture-wicking socks: Typically these socks are made from materials that draw moisture away from the skin, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.

Best sailing boots tested: Can waterproof boots be flexible, comfortable, breathable and dry?

Waterproof boots made of polyurethane are cheap, but when manufacturers of sailing boots ask a lot of money for rubber, Gore-Tex, breathability and comfort as well – is it worth it? Bruce Jacobs of Rubicon3 adventure sailing finds out.

Your feet can be warm, your feet can be dry, or your feet can smell (vaguely) acceptable when you pull your boots off after a hard watch on deck battling the elements. That, traditionally, has been the choice we sailors face when choosing sailing boots. You can definitely have any one of the three. You may be lucky and get two of them. But all three?

Well, it may be possible, but the demands on sailing boots are huge. They need tremendous grip, they have to be fully submersible and stay dry, they have to breathe, they have to have great thermal insulation and they have to do all this while being contorted out of shape and wedged into odd spaces.

The choice can usually be boiled down to one simple question: do I go for rubber boots that will never let moisture in or out, or do I go for ones with a breathable membrane that may ultimately do both?

Thankfully, with the new generation of sailing boots that combine plastics and breathable membranes, the choice is becoming less stark. From our expeditions in the heat of Morocco to the ice-laden waters off Svalbard, we’ve seen spent a season seeing what different boots can do.

Be warned, there are some seriously good sailing boots here.

Polyurethane or rubber?

Boots without a breathable membrane are usually made of rubber or polyurethane (PU).

PU is an artificial rubber. It is lighter but still flexible and with good thermal properties. It’s a tough material and tests have shown that polyurethane boots can last two or three times longer than boots made from rubber.

Rubber on the other hand is a largely natural material, made from the sap of rubber trees that grow in the tropics. It’s more flexible and naturally comfortable than PU and probably has a better grip, hence its common use in boots.

Dubarry Crosshaven sailing boots

This boot was developed by Dubarry in association with a Volvo Ocean Race team and it really shows. A Gore-Tex lining keeps the inside of the boot both waterproof and fairly free from sweat and condensation.

Where boots often fail is at the seams, which eventually open up from (often lateral) wear and tear. This boot has minimised the seams to prevent this and after six months’ hard use, it remained impregnable to the sea.

The upper sections of the boot are a mixture of leather and Cordura, a super-tough, canvas-like fabric, and the inside of the boot is full of thermal insulation. A really good-sized gaiter is made even better for having drainage at its base.

There’s no denying that these boots are mighty expensive, which reduces their final score a bit, but the mixture of performance and durability meant our skippers loved them.

Guy cotten ultralite sailing boots.

I was keen to try these industrial-style PU boots after my last two pairs of Gore-Tex lined sailing boots had failed fairly quickly. They looked indestructible and were the cheapest of the boots on test.

They performed faultlessly in that they showed no signs of wear after some hard use over the season and never let a drop of water in. However, they also never let a drop out and a sweaty foot gets pretty damp anyway!

My feet also… how to put this delicately… smelt strongly, or so my crew told me. Another issue I found was that the sole was a bit too wide for a yacht and kept getting jammed in gaps between deckware.

Finally, with no insulation, you can really feel those cold days at sea unless you are wearing thick thermal socks. These are very light, well made boots but are probably best kept to their intended use – on fishing vessels.

Gill Breathable Performance sailing boots

One of our first mates wore these sailing boots all season and still raves about them.

These are really thick, comfortable boots and she reckons they are the most comfortable ones she has ever worn. Not only that, they are probably the warmest too, with fantastic insulation.

The padding all around the ankle is a godsend when it’s time for putting in some hard labour on the foredeck and the grip is brilliant, which is certainly an important factor on a serious boot.

On the downside, the breathability could only be described as average, maybe as a result of all the thermal insulation, and the boot seemed a little wide, meaning it got stuck in a few areas at crucial times.

As with every boot it’s a trade-off, but for colder climates and serious ocean sailing, this boot is a real contender.

Le Chameau Alize Ponti rubber boots

Mention Le Chameau to a serious sailor and you get a dreamy look on their face. This is a top quality brand; many a Volvo Ocean Race team has used their boots and the famous red gaiter is instantly recognisable.

The Alize Ponti has been used all season and been really well received. It is a rubber boot, so guaranteed waterproofness year round, but a bit hot and sweaty inside and not a great deal of insulation.

The gaiter at the top of the boot is essential and keeps any sea water out.

What really marked these boots out for us though were the comfort and the grip. Both were superb – which can be unusual for a rubber boot. This level of grip is something Le Chameau really focuses on and it shows.

Designed for coastal sailing, they performed really well all season.

Helly Hansen Aegir Ocean Gaiter II sailing boots

Helly Hansen has produced a very good rubber boot here.

Yes, the Aegir Ocean Gaiter 2 offers little breathability, like any rubber boot, but after a season’s hard use our skipper gave them a big thumbs up – because they do exactly what a sailing boot should do: 100 per cent dry, loads of grip with the specialised Helly-grip rubber soles and a superb gaiter to keep rogue sea water out.

When things got really cold, they perhaps lacked a little of the thermal properties that some of the pricier boots had, but that would be our only criticism.

Indeed, we have to be honest and admit that looks do matter, even for sailing boots, and these boots were the best looking pair on test.

MUSTO OCEAN RACER SAILING BOOTS

Ok, the thing is, I’m not going to waste any time saying this, but I absolutely love these Musto Ocean Racer Sailing Boots. I bought my own pair of these a couple years ago and they have been pretty much the best thing to put on my leg ends through summer and winter. Full disclaimer though, they aren’t totally without mild cursing when I’m trussed up like a thanksgiving turkey and trying to get my salopette pant leg tucked into these gators. They’ve  had me swearing and sweating a bit during summer months when the weather is foul but the temperature not too cold. The soles are grippy as heck, I feel absolute confidence in these as I’ve run about up on the foredeck, case in point when I was trying to sort out a jammed third reef in some particularly sporty conditions coming back across the English channel this past summer. The ankle support is good but allows good articulation without chafe. The highly adjustable inner boot means even my skinny chicken legs can get a snug fit and for those with more ample calves, you’ll get a good fit too. Beware though, that the outer gator doesn’t have quite so much luxury of adjustability. So if you do have totally hench calf muscles, you might swear more than me pulling those gators back up. With the minor quibbles aside, these have got to be the most comfortable sailing boots I’ve had in many a year. I like the little touches too to make them more useable, which includes the small rubber heal spur to allow one foot to grip the other when pulling these boots off.

I get particularly excited when a manufacturer produces a decent spec boot available in sizes that fit us folks with little (or littleish) feet. So many times I’ve looked longingly at a decent pair of deck trainers or other manufacturers boots only to find that they start at a size bigger than fits me. These go as small as a UK 4 or US 4.5 which is not too bad. They go up to a size 10.5 US size too. I think that’s a decent range of sizes to cover the majority of people. I have a fairly strict rule that my sailing boots aren’t worn anywhere but on deck or by the chart table so I have managed to avoid going for any long walks in them. That’s not what these are designed for. They’re designed for gripping a wet deck at a silly angle and they do this really very well whilst still giving the support for my foot that I need when standing on helm for a long stint beating to windward.

Yes, they’re pricey. and yes they’re technical, but they are also excellent. Thankyou Musto for making a proper gnarly sailing boot that women can wear as well as men.

The Best Sailing Boots for Serious Sailors

While we all love comfortable shoes while sailing, sometimes the boat or the conditions demand a little more support or protection. Cold, wet feet make for cold bodies and bad traction. So whether you’re racing offshore, around the buoys in a dinghy, crossing oceans in a cruising boat, or even sailing home from a weekend when the weather turns bad, you’ll want the extra warmth, protection and dryness of a good set of boots.

What Makes a Good Sailing Boot?

What makes the difference between a boot serves you well and one that does not? Much depends on what type of boot you’re buying and how you’re sailing, but a few basics hold true for all boots.

Comfortable Fit

It’s got to fit you well without pinching or binding. And it can’t be too big, since that leads to unsure footing as your feet slide around inside. For deck boots, make sure you can fit a pair of warm socks inside them, preferably a wool blend. Dinghy boots you’ll often wear with nothing under them, but if you are buying them for cold water sailing or frostbiting, you also need space for dry socks or a dry suit liner bootie.

Gripping Sole

This could easily be the top criteria, because slick soled boots are worthless and dangerous. Look for a good grip no matter the boot. Even if you’re a dinghy sailor, you might need to stand up on the deck to fix something in the rig. A slick sole is a sure way to slip and hurt yourself.

While you don’t need a steel-toed boot, in bad conditions with water on the deck and poor visibility, you may well trip and stumble over deck hardware. It will still hurt, but a good boot will keep you from damaging your toes as you scurry around a pitching deck. For dinghy boots, think about where they touch the boat. If you use a hiking strap, some reinforcement on the top of the boots goes a long way towards comfort on a long day of racing.

Breathability

Even in cold, wet conditions, if you’re working hard you’re going to sweat under your foulies, and that includes your boots. Not all boots will breathe, and heavy rubber sea boots will not. But it’s in the “nice to have” category since you may live in the boots for a while on an offshore passage.

Warmth/Insulation

For dinghy boots, warmth isn’t usually the first consideration unless you’re frostbiting in the winter. Most of them are neoprene, and trap and hold warm water like a wet suit. Sea boots can offer thermal protection, and should keep your feet warm if the temperature drops.

Water Management

For sea boots offshore, water management means “keep it out”. They should have a high enough cut to overlap foul weather gear. Straps or ties to form a tight seal against the leg are a great feature.

Dinghy boats let water in, but also need to drain. You will be wet, and these boots are not for keeping you dry. They’re for protection and warmth, and they should not hold water beyond what they need for wetsuit function. Ankle seals can help this.

Construction and Material Quality

Like any shoe, boots and be glued, stitched, rubber welded, or some combination of all three techniques. Learn about the materials in the boot and how they’re assembled. Stitching usually gives the toughest construction, but it also puts holes in the rubber and makes leaky spots, so it’s not as common in 100% rubber boots.

Polyurethane boots are usually the least expensive and are not breathable. Natural rubber is more expensive, but softer and more comfortable. The addition of Gore-Tex, neoprene, and other advanced synthetics increase both the price and performance of the boots, but that’s what gives the breathability. Ideally, you’ll have a combination of stitching and/or welding to give you a solid build with a waterproof covering.

Easy On/Off

Getting in and out of full foul weather gear on a pitching boat is a chore. When you’re scrambling topside in an emergency, you have little time to gear up for the weather. And your boots shouldn’t make it impossible. And you don’t want a struggle to get your gear off to visit the head or hit the berth off watch.

While a proper fit will keep them from being too hard to get off, the addition of grips, straps and other tools to help get them on is a big help. When loosened, ties and straps to for water tightness make it easier to get in and out of boots.

Try your boots on in your living room, where it’s warm, dry, and not moving. Then take them off again. Then try it wearing your foulies, PFD, and harness, because your boots go on after your pants. If you have any struggle in benign conditions, you may also struggle in the dark with unsure footing.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

• The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
• The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
• Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .
