X-Yacht’s X40: Best Performance Cruiser

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 8, 2020

X4.0 Sailing in Miami FL

With this year’s aforementioned diminished nominee list, it was impossible to break down the fleet across the board to fit each boat into a neat, tidy category. One of the two notable exceptions was the Performance Cruiser class, with three strong entries: the Arcona 435, the Beneteau Oceanis 40.1 and the X-Yachts X40. We’ll get to the Arcona and the Beneteau in the pages to come, but for 2021, the clear winner in this class of sweet-sailing racer/cruisers was the X40. It clearly met the criteria for being the top performer in its stated design brief: a boat that will compete strongly—and well—on the racecourse, yet be comfortable and fun for coastal cruising.

With the X-Yachts, we’ve seen this figurative movie before. The Danish brand has taken home BOTY hardware four times in the past five years.

  • 5 New Sailboats That Were Nominees

Murphy, our resident boatbuilding whisperer—he’s worked closely with the American Boat and Yacht Council writing textbooks and creating curricula—was emphatic when it came to the quality of the X40′s construction: “X-Yachts has built 5,000 boats since they went into business in 1979. So they have a good, long track record. They’re probably best known in performance circles, so when we board an X-Yacht, we expect the boat is going to sail pretty well, which this one certainly did. As far the build quality, this is one of the top two yachts in this year’s fleet (the other is the HH 50 cat, which we’ll get to). It’s an epoxy hull, which is the best resin you can use to build boats, in terms of both strength and resilience. It also has a galvanized-steel grid. In years past, there have been questions about the long-term integrity of that grid, but they’re unfounded. My feeling is that the massive steel structure is not encapsulated; it goes on top of the fiberglass structure, and it’s not an issue. I think this boat is straight-up wholesome. It’s a really, really lovely sailboat.”

Pillsbury found the efficient deck layout to his liking: “This boat was one of few we saw this year that actually had enough winches on it to sail it like a proper boat. We climbed on several others where a clutch was used to service several lines from a single winch. Sometimes it was hard to remember which clutch to open and which clutch to close, which took away a lot of the joy of sailing. Here you can just load up a winch and know that your line is going to be there, that you have quick access to it. I really liked that. It was also one of only a couple of boats that had a full-on traveler, which to my mind, when you carry a lot of sail, as this boat does, if you can’t really control and trim that mainsail, it’s a problem. And here’s another trend we saw for 2021: a below-deck furler for the headsail, which makes for a nice, clean deck layout.”

As far as the build quality, this x-yacht is one of the top two for this year.

Our X40 sea trials were also heavily influenced by the father/son owners who will be using the boat very differently, but who also made it quite clear that it will address and serve both of their sailing ambitions very well. Son Ryan is an avid inshore and offshore racer who has a Sydney-Hobart Race under his belt, who plans to campaign it hard; he’ll put the racing element into play. Doublehanded racing, especially in these socially distanced times, is becoming ever more popular, and the X40 should be ideal for those venues.

Ryan is a sailmaker, so there will of course be a full quiver of racing sails aboard. But the boat is also set up for his dad, Mike, and his wife to sail efficiently, with a self-tacking jib for cruising forays. (It also has a bow thruster and the electric furler for the jib, which added some weight forward and isn’t the ideal setup for racing; we’d guess Ryan and Mike had some interesting conversations about those features.)

But at the end of the day, the family wound up with a yacht that will be ideal for everyone in the household: a racer/cruiser that is every bit both. So, fair winds, Ryan and Mike. You’ve got the one boat perfect for the two of you.

Uncompromised Comfort

Space is luxury, five star outdoor living, safe by design.

Who said that true sailing performance comes only with plain unfriendly interiors. The X-Yachts design superiority hides behind the vacuum infusion technology on the hull construction, the galvanized steel frame over the keel and the right weight distribution of all the fittings which let room -weight wise- to include all the necessary premium materials to create the feeling of a five star hotel, but this time on a board.

The 3 cabin layout,  with two generously sized WCs/showers on a 46ft yacht is delivering lots of space everywhere, making living on board a truly relaxing experience. Ideally this yacht will comfortably accommodate 6 adults but if wished can sleep another two persons in saloon area and another two children or agile adults at the aft removable sea berths (check Layout & Accommodation details below).

The well-proportioned saloon gives the yacht a spacious feel, but well positioned hand rails and good furniture placement ensure it is always safe and easy to move around no matter the heel angle.

Everything in the interior is a beautifully crafted in the known all time classic X-Yachts way.

The standard full teak bathing platform creates a perfect area for relaxing as well as easy access from the water or dinghy. In this way you can take full advantage of the swim stops or the overnight stays on one of the endless safe anchorages of the Greek archipelago.

The  cockpit space on board the X4⁶ is not only designed to be functional and safe while at sea but also creates a luxurious outdoor living space. The twin wheels and recessed mainsheet track ensuring that the cockpit area is spacious and uncluttered.

A deck shower is fitted as standard. The high back rests not only offer protection while at sea but also create a comfortable seating area on the fitted cockpit cushions

The X4⁶ incorporates 40yrs design experience of the Danish boat yard. A boat you feel sure to spend time on, even when the weather conditions are not ideal.

The vacuum infused epoxy, full sandwich hull saves important weight and it maximises strength and stiffness. All saved weight is used to increase the yachts’ stability enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel more safe and comfortable.

The galvanized steel frame is mounted to the inside of the hull and takes all the loads from the keel and mast. This keeps the yacht stiff, strong and safe. In the same aspect the lead bulb are encapsulated in a reinforced epoxy e-glass shell.

Sailing Performance, on Every Angle

Any boat can go well downwind with a decent sailplan and hull shape. The challenge for the Danish X-Yachts designers was how to achieve a big smile on the face of the skipper any time all directions of sailing are included in the route. And they did a pretty good job as you will realise from the first moments behind helm.

The x46 converts the Greek archipelago into a sailing arena waiting for you to explore and the Greek islands as your buoys. Easy you will consistently see two digit numbers in speed over ground when in broad reach with asymmetrical spinnaker and will be pointing incredibly high, with velocity-made-good unimaginable, compared to any other conventional yacht out there.

Flexible Sailplan, Easy to Handle

We have engineered the sailplan of all X4 6  to be a perfect match to the sailing characteristics of the hull, to the different uses for holidays or racing and to the local Greek conditions. So all boats are fitted with:

  • Main sail, tri-radial design, with three reefs, handled by a single line reefing system
  • 106% Jib, tri-radial design, sheeted to tracks, adjustable from cockpit.
  • Stay sail, with inbuilt inner forestay (anti-torque luff) , for use when the wind picks up, very easy to set up or completely get it out of the way, even on the go when windy (optional)
  • Asymmetrical spinnaker for light wind broad reaching, with a sleeve for easy dropping, even single handed (optional)
  • Optionally a Code Zero, to get you going when close reaching in light wind conditions

Ultimate Sail Design

All X-Yachting tri-radial sails have been thoroughly engineered up to every small detail, in order to perfectly match the X-Yachts sailing philosophy and honour the true sailing performance of each boat separately. Countless hours of work have been dedicated locally in Greece, from our globally  recognised partners Quantum Sails and their talented sail designer and race winning sailor Pat Tahtatzis to design, test and execute this important challenge and the result is in one word: “Perfect!”

Accommodation

3 cabins / 2 wcs / sleeps 6 adults + 2 adults + 2 children.

The layout includes the master bow cabin with a double bed and an ensuite WC with shower, the aft starboard cabin with one more double bed and the aft port side cabin with split bed which can be converted (upon request during booking) to full size double bed. The aft head has an independent entry door from the saloon area so that it can be shared from both aft cabins.  So 6 adults can comfortably sleep without any compromise.

If the team is up for it, another two adults can sleep in the saloon area in the two sofas. Also in both aft cabins there are sea berths which we can install (as an option), on the sides over the main bed, where another two children or agile adults can sleep (one per sea berth). This feature is often used by couples with one child/teenager or so or young friends.

So in total there can sleep max 10 passengers on board which is also the max nominal capacity of the boat.

YANMAR

X-Yachts and YANMAR are Keeping the Danish Tradition for Boat Building Alive

Historically, the Danish people are well known for their sailing prowess and talent for boatbuilding. In the southern Jutland town of Haderslev, X-Yachts and Yanmar are helping keep this tradition very much alive.

“We are surrounded by so much water and therefore have a strong history of sailing,” says Kræn Brinck Nielsen, CEO of X-Yachts. Kræn grew up sailing dingies and excelled enough to represent his country. Later, he was offered his dream job at the helm of this local shipyard that has built its reputation as the best in performance yacht design and construction.

“It was an easy choice – I’ve known this company since I was eight years old and have sailed X-Yachts my whole career,” he adds. “Having something you are passionate about in your backyard was almost too good to be true.”

where are x yachts built

Freed from the constraints of racing and rating considerations X-Yachts could explore every avenue in pursuit of their latest and best ever all round high performer

Imagine a yacht that’s thrillingly fast and fun to sail but isn’t shaped and built according to the constraints of a rulebook. A responsive, rewarding yacht that sails and handles brilliantly in a wide variety of wind and sea conditions, on all points of sail, and hasn’t been optimised just for windward-leeward courses. One with more than ample space, comfort and contemporary style inside but without any compromises made at the expense of sailing balance or performance. A yacht that can easily handle the wildest weather you’re ever likely to encounter, but also excels at fair-weather family cruising. That’s the design DNA of X-Yachts’ Pure X range.

The new X5⁶, launched into the icy waters of Baltic Denmark in the depths of December for initial sea trials, is designed, engineered and built to take this ongoing evolution of the perfect all-round performance cruiser to a whole new level. Thomas Mielec, X-Yachts’ director of design and engineering, was on board for the sea trials and sent good news back to the yard.

‘We came back not only cold and with homework to do, but also with a really good feeling and a great deal of pride that the entire organisation behind the development of the X5⁶ has definitely succeeded in creating a magnificent performance cruiser well prepared for providing future owners with superior sailing pleasure,’ he wrote. ‘Even though we’ve only been able to test in fairly light to medium wind conditions, X5⁶ hull number one has already provided us with a distinct big-boat feeling of safety and comfort, where almost everything can be operated by the touch of a button if you want.

‘This of course also means that vast amounts of technical equipment need to be tested, adjusted and calibrated to make sure everything works as designed and engineered. The focus for the first tests has been sail handling, sail balance, rig trim, alignment and tuning the twin rudder steering system.’

All manoeuvres can be done singlehanded from the helm at the touch of a button

‘The idea behind the X5⁶ is to complete the Pure X range,’ explains Kraen Nielsen, the hands-on chief executive of X-Yachts, who was also on board for the sea trials. ‘There was a real demand for a boat of this size. It offers a lot more space so you get a really big, nice cockpit to work in or to enjoy yourself in. You get very spacious aft cabins, so it’s a boat that delivers something different to the previous boats in the range. We’re convinced that the X5⁶ will exceed our expectations.’

One stand-out feature of the X5⁶ (and indeed all X-Yachts) is epoxy infused hull construction. This technique gives very precise control over the glassfibre laminate, allowing it to be optimised for stiffness and strength while saving weight, and the use of epoxy gives a better end result than the polyester or vinylester resins that most builders use: not just stronger but much less prone to distortion in the topsides over time. The entire hull is then cured and baked in precisely controlled conditions to further optimise its material properties. In the X5⁶, all weight saved by this advanced construction technology is used to increase the yacht’s stability.

While many (some would say most) cruising yacht brands are focused on maximising their appeal to novice sailors, X-Yachts is aimed squarely at connoisseurs. The Pure X range offers easy handling, of course, but a great deal of emphasis is placed on delivering the best possible sailing experience. Boatspeed and aesthetics are very important but balance, helm response and ergonomics are paramount – and many small, carefully considered details add up to a more enjoyable time on board not just for the helmsman but for the whole crew.

Some of these design details have been gradually evolved and perfected over many years while others are introduced with every model added to the range. A new one on the X5⁶ is the sprayhood bay, recessed into the coachroof and covered with a pair of front-hinged doors on gas struts that leave the coachroof totally flush – and the hood completely hidden when not in use, subtly but substantially improving the clean, uncluttered aesthetic of the streamlined, lowprofile cabin top, which can be beautifully finished in luxurious laid teak. A large expanse of solar panels can also be recessed into the coachroof, giving enough charging capacity to keep the yacht’s batteries topped up throughout a long-distance ocean passage while preserving the X5⁶’s clean silhouette.

The outboard-mounted wheel pedestals are another nice touch, enhancing the sense of wide-open space in the stern, with integrated foot chocks and elegantly curved teak helm seats. An optional electric mainsheet traveller can be recessed completely below deck, eliminating a trip hazard whilst allowing precise control of mainsail shape. There’s also the option of a two-seater pushpit bench that doubles up as an ideally located liferaft stowage bracket. The coaming-mounted primary and secondary winches (with seven rope clutches on each side) are close enough to the twin helms for easy operation when sailing singlehanded, but with ample elbow room for a trimmer to work comfortably and efficiently when the boat is fully crewed. Capacious rope bins in the aft ends of the cockpit bench seats keep all the rope tails tidy and are almost invisible. Forward of the winches, the whole cockpit is entirely free of ropes and other potential hazards, with plenty of secure, comfortable space for passengers (and off-watch crew) to stretch out and relax.

The bow shape maximises the headsailsʼ J measurement to boost performance.

X-Yachts puts a huge emphasis on designing and refining the sailplans of its boats, believing (and they’re not wrong) that it’s one of the most important design features. The marque’s racing pedigree can be felt as soon as you grab the wheel, but the other key parameter for the sailplan of the X5⁶ and its sisters in the Pure X range is flexibility. Up to three foresails – 88% self-tacking jib, 100% genoa and huge code zero – can be kept furled and ready to go. The self-tacker sheets to a track neatly recessed into the cabin top to preserve the clean, uncluttered aesthetic. The genoa is sheeted to a pair of longitudinal tracks with its sheets and car adjusters led aft and ducted under the coachroof.

A neat passerelle deploys from the almost invisible hatch in the port-side coaming

The rig itself is 11/12 fractional on a tapered, triple-spreader mast with discontinuous rod rigging, which is deliberately over-specified – a feature common to all X-Yachts – which makes it extremely stiff as well as super strong, promoting good sail shape and trim while reducing stretch and preventing the mast from pumping whilst sailing upwind into a heavy sea.

Below decks, the clean, timeless design aesthetic that you’d expect in a premium Danish yacht is obvious at a glance. A more careful look reveals excellent ergonomics, lots of welldesigned stowage throughout, and the fine craftsmanship in all areas that defines the brand.

One important feature is invisible – and indeed imperceptible, but that’s the point. The engine compartment is sound-insulated to superyacht specification using a heavy 8mm solid rubber layer, 50mm of noise-deadening rockwool and covered with perforated aluminium plating. All openings are sealed to eliminate noise.

‘The design team has focused on Nordic interior styling with a lot of attention to detail like the ambient lighting, small pieces of leather, and in general you get a great atmosphere from the daylight that comes into the saloon,’ Nielsen explains. ‘This is for sure a spacious boat but we would never compromise sailing pleasure so every thought goes in the direction of combining good living on board with good sailing capabilities and this boat is absolutely no compromise.’

X-Yachts X-41 review: from the archive

Yachting World

  • May 2, 2021

First of all, the X-Yachts X-41 is not simply a larger X-35.

where are x yachts built

The mainsheet is led under the side decks to the aft pair of cockpit winches. Credit: X-Yachts Credit: X-Yachts

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Although they are clearly from the same stable, Niels Jeppesen has given her a deep T-keel for stability.

But the X-Yachts X-41 carries a comparatively lower sail area than her sister.

The reason for this, according to Jeppesen, is that the X-Yachts X-35 was designed specifically to establish a class in the Mediterranean, requiring plenty of sail to cope with light conditions.

Choosing to market her as a one-design has also let X-Yachts fit her with all the toys as standard – carbon spars, wheel and some tidy line handling arrangements.

The deck layout of the X-Yachts X-41 rewards close scrutiny.

There’s an abundance of tweaks to be made, with barber haulers for the head sail and spinnaker sheets and powerful outhaul, cunningham and kicker purchases led to camcleats on both sides of the coach roof.

The mainsheet is led under the side decks to the aft pair of cockpit winches, avoiding any trip or chafe problems for crew sitting out.

A powerful traveller runs the full width of the cockpit within easy reach of the helm or the main trimmer.

Both mainsheet and traveller lines are continuous, the traveller line routed through small blocks clipped to the guard wires to keep it to hand.

Backstay adjustment is through X-Yachts’ patented Magic Wheel, as fitted to the IMX40, IMX45 and most recently the X-35.

This impressive system uses a huge drum below decks to provide most of the purchase, allowing rapid backstay adjustment simply by pulling a lot of line.

It’s tidy and quicker than hydraulics and is routed conveniently through a small tube which emerges just below the centre of the traveller.

The innovations don’t stop there. X-Yachts have fitted Harken’s dual diameter Quattro winches to the coachroof, which allow fast sheeting of the spinnaker sheets via the large diameter drum or a lower gear by simply shifting the line up to the main drum and self-tailer.

X-Yachts-X-41-review-helm-credit- X-Yachts

The big carbon wheel was comfy to use from either side of the cockpit and offered a good view forward.

Lifting the GRP cover below the helmsman’s feet reveals another clever detail – the quadrant is immediately abaft the helm and as close to the centre of the wheel as possible, allowing short cables to be used and eliminating slack.

All good in theory, but does it work on the water? In a word, yes.

The X-Yachts X-41 is a thoroughbred racer which is already showing her class – the team won the first race of the Warsash Spring Series by 15 minutes on corrected time.

We sailed the boat twice; once for the second race of the series, then later for a detailed test.

On the first occasion, the wind ranged from 30-38 knots, giving us a fast run to the course and race organisers the jitters.

A stiff performer

They cancelled the race, but skipper Jochem Visser suggested we should go for a sail anyway.

It was a bumpy ride upwind under reefed main and jib, conditions that the hull’s steel reinforcement, which picks up rig and keel load, is designed to counteract.

Turning for the spinnaker run, we drove the boat hard, surfing down waves to reach speeds up to 15 knots.

The 12 crew were necessary to sail and balance the boat in these conditions and proved that the large cockpit could work well when fully crewed.

The second session couldn’t have been more different – bright sunshine and light winds averaging six knots.

X-Yachts-X-41-review-in-action-credit- X-Yachts

The crew of 12 were essential for spinnaker work and helpful weight on the wind.

Sailing upwind and sacrificing a little height for power, the X-Yachts X-41 turned in a more than respectable five to six knots, often matching or exceeding the true wind speed.

She responded well to crew placement, delivering much better helm balance with plenty of weight to leeward.

The big carbon wheel was comfy to use from either side of the cockpit and offered a good view forward, and there were plenty of brace points for the helmsman whatever the steering position.

Helming was finger-light yet positive – the boat responded well to small corrections and the steering system showed no slack.

Even in these light airs, feedback was good and she proved easy to keep in the groove.

X-Yachts-X-41-review-in-action3-credit- X-Yachts

Upwind in 30 knots: the X-41 proved a good all-rounder.

Tacking is fast and straightforward thanks to the non-overlapping rig.

Bearing away and hoisting a symmetric spinnaker, we nudged seven knots, reaching as the wind filled in slightly. Again, she proved positive to handle, rewarding puffs of wind with good acceleration.

Under engine the 41 performed well, cruising at over eight knots and reaching just over nine knots flat out.

As can be expected from her narrow keel. the turning circle was tight – 1.25 boat lengths – and performance astern was secure and positive.

Although primarily a racing boat, the X-Yachts X-41 still offers a few cruiser comforts.

The cockpit is a good width for bracing and deep enough to feel secure, and has two good lockers for fenders and lines plus a large lazarette accessed through the floor behind the helm.

The racing foil on the headstay can be replaced with roller-reefing gear with the drum mounted below deck. But the really neat concession to cruising is the anchor box.

X-Yachts’ system lets you fit an anchor well and windlass which can be entirely removed when racing, using a fully sealed hatch to prevent water ingress. It’s not a quick job, admittedly, but impressive nonetheless.

Light and welcoming

The interior layout is similar to that of the X-35, but the extra length has allowed a few welcome changes, notably a larger galley, forward-facing nav station and doors and lockers for the aft cabins.

Yet the first impression below is of simplicity – there’s a light, welcoming feel thanks to teak being restricted to necessary joiner work, a generous use of white and lots of opening lights and hatches.

Starting at the bow, there’s a zippered, mesh panel which opens into an empty bow cavity suitable for sail stowage, but would be filled with the anchor box when cruising.

The forecabin has a conventional triangular berth, its split mattress easily moved to allow access beneath the berth.

The hatches which offer access to this stowage space are too narrow to accept anything but the smallest sails, but provide plenty of stowage for other objects.

Other stowage is provided by a large locker with hanging and shelving space. Both aft cabins feature a similar locker.

X-Yachts-X-41-review-heads-credit- X-Yachts

The heads and shower are basic, but practical.

Forward and accessed through the saloon, the heads is large enough for showering and has a large locker behind the usual mirrored doors the space below the sink is left open.

The saloon has two long settees either side of a drop-leaf table.

As on the X-35, the seat backs hinge upwards, giving access to the full width of the cushions when sleeping.

It’s a shame no extra cushion is provided, so that the hinged section can double as an upper berth.

That said, because the boat is able to sleep ten, few people are likely to find this restricting.

X-Yachts-X-41-review-saloon-credit- X-Yachts

Plenty of white makes a bright interior.

The settee cushions and their plywood bases also hinge up to allow access to the water tank to port and diesel tank to starboard, plus limited stowage. Grab handles below the portlights run throughout the saloon.

A large nav station is at the foot of the companionway, with plenty of space for paper and electronic navigation.

Stowage is in a stack of four drawers in the pedestal and there’s even a handy pen box under a flap in the chart table top.

Opposite, the galley is large enough for standard cooking and has good stowage above the stove.

However, less successful is the stack of four drawers adjacent to the stove – with an inside width of only 9cm, you have to wonder how useful they will be.

The simple aft cabins have a large locker each and berths that are mounted low in the boat, with little space beneath.

A pipecot is also fitted should you need to squeeze three people into each cabin.

The engine box, which protrudes into both cabins, can be readily removed, as can the companionway steps, to provide superb all-round engine access.

For sheer adrenalin, the X-Yachts X-41 takes the honours. She’s fast and fun, and rewards careful trim and handling with clear returns of speed.

The big rig, deep draught and high sail area/displacement creates a stiff, responsive yacht that can put a smile on your face and some results on the board.

My guess is that X-Yachts X-41’s will spend most of their time in racing mode.

That said, just as many a sports car driver has never been near a track, several owners of the 40 or so boats already pre-sold admitted that they never plan to race at all.

X-Yachts X49 MkII first look: a good boat gets even better

  • Theo Stocker
  • March 5, 2024

The X-Yachts X49 was already an impressive boat - as you'd expect from the well-trusted brand, but the MKII takes things a step further

where are x yachts built

Updating existing models is nothing new, but X-Yachts is currently working its way through its whole Pure X range, having already updated the X56, and the X43, the Mk II of which I sailed last years, and loved (YM, Aug 23). The X49 Mk II is following in the same vein as the other two models to have received the treatment.

As noted in that test, this is far more than slapping on some make-up for a cosmetic update. The structure of the hull and deck has been updated to make the boat lighter and stiffer, as well as lowering the boat’s centre of gravity. While the aft hull sections of the X43 were noticeably changed, the X49, being a later model, hasn’t needed such drastic alterations, although strucutral changes have still been made.

The boat has, however, received a new rudder that promises lower drag with more grip. At the front of the boat, the ‘S-bow’ moulding allows for a longer bowsprit with more space to fly either a Code Zero or a gennaker, with a larger slot between headsail and forestay. It also gives a bit more space for a longer bow-roller to keep the anchor clear of the topsides.

On deck, updates include a re-worked helm position, with larger, lifting footrests for the helmsman, and the coaming has been extended to keep your backside out of any water on deck when helming seated, as well as making the positiong slightly higher.

X-Yachts X43 review: fast passage making in comfort

You know the stars have aligned when you get Force 4-5 and bright sunshine, as well as a boat, crew,…

The position of the winches has been tweaked for easier sail handling – there is space to stand ahead of the wheels and handle the winches and clutches without needing to kneel on the side benches. The winches are both powered, and all lines are led aft under ducting in the coaming. The cockpit benches have also been made longer for more comfortable lounging.

Moving aft, the transom has been made more open and welcoming when you first step aboard from the stern, while the deck-height fold down transom has been retained to keep the sleek, open look.

Aesthetic touches include new pulpit and pushpit metalwork, as well as flush hatches and windows for a more minimalist look. These have also been increased in size to increase light below decks.

Other than that, there are a few tweaks to the styling below, as well as functional changes, such as better and easier access to stowage and making a few other features more user friendly and more durable.

It certainly looks like what was already a very good boat has been made even better with the inevitable refinements that can be made once a model has a few years of real-world sailing under its keel.

Couple Who Set Sail In Self-Built Eco-Friendly Yacht Found Dead In Lifeboat

Couple Who Set Sail In Self-Built Eco-Friendly Yacht Found Dead In Lifeboat

The couple had left Halifax Harbour on June 11 aboard their yacht. (File)

A British-Canadian couple, who set sail across the Atlantic Ocean roughly six weeks ago, were found dead in a lifeboat off the coast of Canada. The bodies of Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood were discovered after their raft washed ashore on Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, reported the  NY Post .

The pair had embarked on an ambitious journey across the Atlantic Ocean, sailing from Halifax to the Azores in their self-built, eco-friendly yacht, Theros. The 42-foot vessel, powered solely by electric, wind, and solar energy, was intended to demonstrate the feasibility of sustainable travel. The couple had been posting about the construction of Theros on their YouTube channel, "Theros Adventures," and this voyage was to be their inaugural fully "green" journey.

They left Halifax Harbour on June 11 aboard their yacht bound for the Azores region of Portugal. They were reported missing on June 18 and found three weeks later on July 10.

While initially reported to be from British Columbia, it is believed that Ms Packwood was from the UK and Mr Clibbery was from Canada. Formal identification is still pending.

The cause of death is not yet known. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the incident.

Their sailboat, Theros, was severely damaged, and investigators suspected that it was struck by a larger vessel.

The area they were sailing in is notoriously known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the large number of shipwrecks that occurred there. The exact circumstances of the incident are still unknown, but investigators are exploring several theories.

One leading theory is that Theros was hit by a bulk carrier, which may have caused significant damage to the sailboat. Investigators have inspected a carrier ship, which was in the same area as Theros at the time of the incident, but they have not released their findings, as per the Saltwire .

The crew of the carrier ship reported that they did not notice any damage or collision, the Mirror  reported. Some veteran sailors have suggested the homemade additions to Theros may have contributed to the tragedy, particularly the excessive weight of batteries and solar panels, which may have destabilised the boat.

Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood met by chance in 2015 at a bus stop in London. At the time, Ms Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister, while Mr Clibbery was visiting from Canada. This chance encounter led to them eventually falling in love and getting married on their yacht, Theros, in 2016.

Helping our customers through the CrowdStrike outage

On July 18, CrowdStrike, an independent cybersecurity company, released a software update that began impacting IT systems globally. Although this was not a Microsoft incident, given it impacts our ecosystem, we want to provide an update on the steps we’ve taken with CrowdStrike and others to remediate and support our customers.

Since this event began, we’ve maintained ongoing communication with our customers, CrowdStrike and external developers to collect information and expedite solutions. We recognize the disruption this problem has caused for businesses and in the daily routines of many individuals. Our focus is providing customers with technical guidance and support to safely bring disrupted systems back online. Steps taken have included:

  • Engaging with CrowdStrike to automate their work on developing a solution.   CrowdStrike has recommended a workaround to address this issue and has also issued a public statement. Instructions to remedy the situation on Windows endpoints were posted on the Windows Message Center .
  • Deploying hundreds of Microsoft engineers and experts to work directly with customers to restore services.
  • Collaborating with other cloud providers and stakeholders, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS), to share awareness on the state of impact we are each seeing across the industry and inform ongoing conversations with CrowdStrike and customers.
  • Quickly posting manual remediation documentation and scripts found here .
  • Keeping customers informed of the latest status on the incident through the Azure Status Dashboard here .

We’re working around the clock and providing ongoing updates and support. Additionally, CrowdStrike has helped us develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix for CrowdStrike’s faulty update. We have also worked with both AWS and GCP to collaborate on the most effective approaches.

While software updates may occasionally cause disturbances, significant incidents like the CrowdStrike event are infrequent. We currently estimate that CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines. While the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services.

This incident demonstrates the interconnected nature of our broad ecosystem — global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors and other software vendors, and customers. It’s also a reminder of how important it is for all of us across the tech ecosystem to prioritize operating with safe deployment and disaster recovery using the mechanisms that exist. As we’ve seen over the last two days, we learn, recover and move forward most effectively when we collaborate and work together. We appreciate the cooperation and collaboration of our entire sector, and we will continue to update with learnings and next steps.

CrowdStrike outage: How your plane, train and automobile travel may be affected

render of CrowdStrike outage

The CrowdStrike outage that hit early Friday morning and knocked out computers running Microsoft Windows has grounded flights globally.

Major U.S. airlines including United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have halted flight operations around the world. According to FlightAware, which is tracking the cancellations live , 7% of United Airlines flights, 8% of American Airlines flights and 12% of Delta flights have been canceled. By comparison, the airlines had canceled Thursday 3%, 4% and 1% of flights, respectively.

FlightAware’s tracker also shows that, as of 6:30 p.m. ET, nearly 4,434 flights have been canceled today, with total flight delays surpassing 40,000. Not all of those cancellations and delays will be linked to the CrowdStrike outage.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who addressed the widespread outage during an interview on CNBC , said that while the issue has been identified, his agency expects a “ripple or cascade effect” to continue today as airlines try to get their systems back to normal.

“These flights, they run so tightly, so back-to-back, that even after a root cause is addressed, you can still be feeling those impacts throughout the day,” said Buttigieg. “I will say we have no indication of an impact to our own systems, in terms of FAA operational systems like air traffic control, or most systems within the U.S. Department of Transportation, but as far as the airlines themselves, we’re going to definitely be expecting more there.”

Buttigieg also noted that shipping ports have been affected due to issues at gates letting trucks in and out.  Local California news  reported that at Long Beach and Los Angeles ports, shipments were disrupted and delayed amid the outage as hundreds of trucks were stuck waiting for cargo to be released or loaded.

The Federal Aviation Administration posted on X and Facebook that it is closely monitoring the issue, and that several airlines have requested assistance with ground stops until the issue is resolved. A ground stop is an air traffic control measure that slows or halts the flow of an aircraft coming into a given airport.

“We continue to work closely with airlines as they work to resume normal operations,” wrote the FAA. “Ground stops and delays will be intermittent at various airports as the airlines work through residual technology issues. Contact the airlines for more information.”

According to the FAA’s website , airports like Boston Logan International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Milwaukee Mitchell International, Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York have closed to “non-scheduled transient general aviation aircraft, or flights that aren’t a part of a regular schedule (like charter or private flights) and aircraft that are just passing through and not based at the airport.”

Airports including Atlanta International, Detroit Metropolitan, Minneapolis Saint-Paul, Salt Lake City International Airport and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in Saint Croix are experiencing ground delays due to unspecified reasons that could also be linked to the CrowdStrike outage.

Airlines react to CrowdStrike outage

Virtually every airline has experienced communications issues due to the CrowdStrike outage, including global airlines such as Qantas , Air France , Ryanair , Air Asia , Air India and others.

The FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center posted Friday that all United Airlines flights regardless of destination and subs have been grounded due to a communication issue.

United Airlines posted on its website that flights going in and out of the following airports today have been affected: Cleveland, OH (CLE); Newark, NJ (EWR); Frankfurt, Germany (FRA); Guam (GUM); Honolulu, HI (HNL); Washington, D.C. (IAD); Houston, TX (IAH); Los Angeles, CA (LAX); London, Great Britain (LHR); Orlando, FL (MCO); Chicago, IL (ORD); San Francisco, CA (SFO).

A United spokesperson told TechCrunch that the issue affected many separate systems, including those used for calculating aircraft weight, checking in customers and phone systems at the airline’s call centers.

Frontier Airlines, an American ultra low-cost carrier, was also affected , but appears to have resumed, or is in the process of resuming, normal flight operations. Spirit Airlines, another budget airline, said the outage is impacting its reservations system and flight operations.

“Due to the outage, we are currently unable to rebook Guests whose travel plans have been disrupted. We will assist these Guests as soon as possible when our vendor restores service,” Spirit posted on Facebook.

American Airlines also confirmed that a technical issue with a vendor impacted multiple carriers. The airline said as of 5 a.m. ET it has been able to “safely re-establish our operation.” However, current social media posts still show customers whose flights are canceled or continue to be delayed.

Despite the fact that Delta was able to resume some flight departures , as of Friday afternoon, more than 1,200 Delta mainline and Delta Connection flights had been canceled due to the outage. Delta also said additional delays and cancellations are expected Friday and potentially through the weekend.

According to a ground delay alert from the FAA, Delta flights departing for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport are seeing an average delay of 174 minutes at the time of this writing. The delay affects departures from 30 airlines across the U.S. and Canada.

Citi analyst Stephen Trent said that because the outage wasn’t the fault of the airlines themselves, he doesn’t believe there will be penalties for flight cancellations.

“Today’s disruption should not have a material earnings impact as long as significant improvements continue throughout the day,” Trent said.

Consumer rights

Most of the airlines with delayed or canceled flights are working on ways to help customers rebook their flights.

United, American Airlines and Delta have all waived change fees and fare differences for customers whose flights were canceled on Friday. Customers need to rebook today to take advantage of the waiver, and their new flights must be departing between Friday and July 25, 2024. Tickets also must be in the same cabin and between the same cities as originally booked.

The airlines told the DOT that they’d provide meals for customer delayed by three hours and hotel rooms for customers that have to wait overnight for a new flight. Delta also said on its website that it would provide meal vouchers and hotel accommodations to impacted customers.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, CEO of air passenger rights company AirHelp, said that passengers who have been affected by delays and cancellations should understand their rights and know what options are available to them during disruptions.

“Although this incident is beyond the control of airlines and airports, passengers still have certain rights under U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations,” Pawliszyn told TechCrunch. “The passengers are entitled to assistance from the airline. This can include rebooking on the next available flight and, in some cases, meal vouchers and accommodation if the delay extends overnight.”

Pawliszyn noted that the “right to care” is for all delays above two hours. He recommends that passengers retain all boarding passes and receipts for any expenses incurred during the delay, such as food, drink and accommodation, to facilitate any potential reimbursement claims

Trains largely unaffected by CrowdStrike outage

Most trains appear to be unaffected by the outage, including Amtrak, but some apps for managing train times are down. The New York City public transit system, the MTA, is still running, but the MTA app that shows subway and bus scheduling and route planning was down for much of the day. As of 6:30 pm ET, the MTA app was working again.

Washington, D.C.’s Metro public transit system, however, was affected by the outage. As of 5:45 am ET, the service said that all Metrorail stations opened on time and service is running as scheduled. Buses are also operating as scheduled.

Auto industry mildly affected

The outage has affected businesses around the world, including retailers, brokerage houses, media companies and more.

Automakers GM and Ford told TechCrunch their manufacturing operations were not affected by the outage and that their consumer-facing apps, which owners use to unlock and lock their vehicles and control other information, are working as normal. OnStar, the GM subsidiary that handles in-vehicle communications including emergency services, is also working as normal.

Some automotive suppliers have been affected by the outage, including Magna, which is experiencing “varying levels of operational disruptions,” according to the company.

“Our dedicated IT teams are working closely with all effected providers to expedite recovery and ensure continuity of service across our locations,” Magna spokesperson Tracy Fuerst said in an email.  “We have also been in close contact with our customers and suppliers to mitigate any potential impact.”

Fuerst added that due to the quick response of its global IT team and providers the majority of its operations are now running. “We are getting closer to more stability which is expected yet today still,” she said.

CrowdStrike’s CEO, George Kurtz, confirmed that a defect in a software update for Windows hosts caused the outage. He ruled out a cyberattack, adding that the firm was rolling out a fix and that Mac and Linux hosts were not affected.

This story is developing but was originally published at 8:22 a.m. PT. Article has been updated to include new information on flight delays and show that the MTA app is now working.

Facts about petestep

In the production of X-Power 33C, we are using the patented Petestep ®  technology that results in a more comfortable and fuel efficient boat ride.

No more clatter in waves! Because Petestep® hulls don’t have any horizontal flat surfaces that smash the water under the hull, the biggest source of hull noise is removed. This makes Petestep® hulls create a lot less noise from waves, which significantly adds to the comfort of the ride.
