What’s the Ameer and Gnanavelraja feud: Why the 15-year-old Paruthiveeran issue has resurfaced

Social media is abuzz with debates about the fight between director ameer and producer gnanavelraja, who made the acclaimed film paruthiveeran, the debut of karthi which made him a star instantly..

Paruthiveeran (2007) changed the lives of many upon its release. The film’s lead actor Karthi became an instant star after this debut while actress Priyamani won the National Award for her performance. Director Ameer also became an important voice in Tamil cinema. The film’s producer Gnanvelraja made his debut with the venture and became successful with his very first venture. However, the film has left both the director and the producer embroiled in a huge dispute, with Ameer filing a case against Gnanvelraja and the film’s actors, Suriya, Karthi, and their father Shivakumar.

While it’s been 15 years since the film’s release, the legal case filed by Ameer is still in court, and the issue has become a big talking point on social media. The issue has left the internet divided with many Suriya and Karthi fans siding with Gnanavelraja, while fans of Ameer have come out to defend him.

While the problem between Ameer and Gnanavel and co has been going on for years, it has resurfaced after Karthi 25. He celebrated his 25th film Japan in a grand fashion in Chennai , which also doubled up as a promo event for his latest film Japan (a box office dud). The event felicitated everyone who was instrumental in the success of Karthi’s career. However, director Ameer, a key person in the actor’s success, was not invited to the event, which raised several eyebrows. Later, in an interview, Ameer spoke at large about the issue which brought the issue to the fore once again.

What’s the problem?

Ameer’s side alleges that though Gnanavelraja’s Studio Green is credited as the producer of Paruthiveeran, the director has spent a lot of money on the film after the producer refused to fund the film midway. Ameer has filed a case against the producer seeking proper compensation and rights for the film. He has also claimed that the film’s Telugu version was released without his permission, and he has not received any compensation from the profit. The case has been in the court for more than one decade.

Ameer’s statements

Ameer, in an interview with Behindwoods, claimed that Gnanvelraja was the reason for the fallout between him and Suriya (and Karthi). “All of you know Suriya as the star he is now. I know him as a friend. Karthi used to call me ‘anna (brother)’ on the sets of Paruthiveeran. He helped me with my first foreign travel. A bad incident happened because of a third person, who came between us. He believed that only if our relationship is stopped he can get close to the two actors.”

He added that the problem between him and the other faction is because of money worth Rs 1 to 1.5 crores. However, Ameer claims that money is not what he is after. “I have been cheated by someone and I want to seek justice to know what will come out of it. I want to know what should I tell my kid…whether to be honest or not.”

Gnanavel’s statements

Meanwhile, Gnanavel reacted to Ameer’s claim and said that the director overshot the budget by a huge margin. On top of that, Gnanvelraja claimed that he never intended to become a producer in the first place and was forced by Ameer to produce Paruthiveeran. According to the producer, Ameer incurred a huge loss with his film Ram (2005) and he got a loan of Rs 60 lakh from Gnanavel. In return, Ameer convinced the producer to make Paruthiveeran for the money he owes him. 

The producer made some serious allegations against Ameer calling him a person with whom no one can work with. He claimed Ameer behaved as if he was an iconic director like Bharathiraj and behaved badly with the actors and other people on the sets. He also said the delay with Paruthiveeran was due to Ameer’s lethargy.

Director Samuthirakani, who assisted Ameer in Paruthiveeran and played a small cameo, lashed out at Gnanavel for his allegations against Ameer. Samuthirakani claimed that he had been a witness to how Ameer pooled money from his sources to finish the film after Gnanavel left the film mid-way. He asked Gnanavel to be careful with his statements. Similarly, director-actor Sasikumar, known for Subramaniapuram, criticised the producer for his statements against Ameer. Sasi said he had loaned out money to Ameer for the completion of Paruthiveeran and called out the false allegations against Ameer.

Meanwhile, Vaadivasal brings together Ameer and Suriya:

Amidst all the fiasco, Ameer and Suriya will come together to act in Vetrimaaran’s Vaadivasal, which is based on a Tamil novella of the same name. When asked about the same, Ameer said that he can separate his issues and art. He added that he is in fact looking forward to working with Suriya as he has become a seasoned actor in all these years. While there were rumours that Ameer might be removed from the film, Vetrimaaran recently confirmed that he is very much part of the project and his role has become bigger than before. 

Two founders presented their life-saving medical device on Shark Tank India, seeking Rs 1 crore in funding. Despite receiving praise, their growth model and business skills were questioned. They have already secured grants from major players and struck a deal with Aman Gupta for Rs 20 lakh and 0.67% equity, along with Rs 80 lakh as debt at 10% interest.

VETRI MAARAN SAYS AMEER IS IRREPLACEABLE IN 'VAADI VAASAL'

'Asuran' and 'Vada Chennai' director Vetri Maaran is currently working on 'Viduthalai 2' . After this project, he will begin shooting for Suriya's 'Vaadi Vaasal'. Earlier, it was revealed that Ameer will play a role in the film.

On November 28, Vetri Maaran's production house, Grass Root Film Co, shared a photo of Ameer and himself dicusssing the project. He wrote, "Director #VetriMaaran met Director #Ameer to discuss his role in #Vaadivaasal. The prominence of his role in the script has increased during the writing process and is tailor made for Director #Ameer. He is irreplaceable as an actor in the film (sic)."

Following the controversy, Ameer issued a statement saying that Gnanavel wasn’t involved throughout the film after the budget shot up and he had to borrow money from many to finish the film and release it.

The issue snowballed into a huge controversy when Karthi thanked Gnanavel and Suriya for the release of 'Paruthiveeran' at the audio launch of his 25th film, 'Japan'. Many filmmakers who shaped Karthi's career in the industry attended the event. However, Ameer, who introduced him, was absent.

Later, Ameer revealed that he wasn't invited to the event properly and hence he did not attend. This became a topic of discussion with Ameer and Gananvel Raja giving interviews levelling allegations against each other.

Recently, Samuthirakani, Sasikumar and Sneha expressed their solidarity with Ameer. Now, Vetri Maaran's statement is seen as a support for Ameer.

Ameer joins hands with Vetrimaaran for the release of Maayavalai

Earlier, we reported that Ameer's next has been titled Maayavalai . The film is backed by Yuvan Shankar Raja's banner YSR Films along with Ameer's under Ameer Film Corporation.

On Wednesday, the makers announced that Vetrimaaran's Grass Root Film Company has also stepped in for the film's release. Maayavalai is helmed by Ramesh Bala Krishnan and also stars Sathya, Sanchita Shetty, Vincent Ashokan, and Dheena, among others. The plot of the film is kept under wraps.

Acclaimed Tamil filmmaker-actor Ameer is returning to direction after nearly a decade and is collaborating with National Award-winning director Vetri Maaran for their upcoming venture, which will star Soori. The project has fans mighty excited as the Asuran director is penning the dialogues and the screenplay for the new film along with Thangam, which has been announced to be titled Iraivan Miga Periyavan . Being produced by Jaffer's JSM Pictures banner, the film will also include music by blockbuster films composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, while the cinematography will be handled by Ramji. An interesting title look poster has been released for Iraivan Miga Periyavan and it is expected that the film's story will revolve extensively around religion and politics as both Ameer and Vetri Maaran have expressed their views on several occasions regarding how each plays a prominent role in our society.

Iraivan Miga Periyavan also marks the second time Ameer and Vetri Maaran are collaborating together after the former played a powerful role as the character Rajan Vagaira in the Polladhavan director's Vada Chennai in 2018. The new film is also Ameer's first directorial after a gap of nine years when he last directed the Jayam Ravi-starrer Aadhi Bhagavan in 2013. As of now, no other names from Iraivan Miga Periyavan have been revealed and an announcement can be expected in the days ahead for Ameer's fifth directorial after he earlier directed films namely Mounam Pesiyadhe , Raam , Paruthiveeran and, Aadhi Bhagavan . AR Jaffer Sadiq is also producing on JSM Pictures banner ‘Iraivan Miga Periyavan’ (story by Vetri Maaran and Thangam) directed by Ameer with Azhar and Mydeen in key characters and Vasanth Ravi-starrer ‘Indira’.

While the first look of ‘Iraivan Miga Periyavan’ was recently released on the occasion of AR Jaffer Sadiq’s birthday and garnered a lot of attention, the first look of ‘Mangai’ is now out. It reflects the theme of the film and piques the interest of the fans.

Talking about ‘Mangai’, director Gubenthiran Kamatchi said, “Mangai is a film based on the journey of a woman, in which Anandi plays the lead character. Dushi, Rams, Adithya Kathir and others are playing important roles.

Dushi, who played an important character in Sasikumar’s ‘Easan’, is the son of Jayaprakash, a veteran producer and popular character actor in Tamil and Telugu films.

‘Mangai’ talks about a man’s view of a woman and narrates the experiences a woman encounters on a journey. The film has been shot in Munnar, Pooparai in Kerala, Theni, Cumbum, Kudalur, Lower Camp and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.”

Gubenthiran Kamatchi, who worked with popular filmmakers as co-director and dialogue writer in many Tamil and Telugu movies, further said, “‘Mangai’ has taken shape very well.  I am confident each and every scene will keep the audience engaging.”

While the first look of ‘Kayal’ Anandi starrer ‘Mangai’, produced by AR Jaffer Sadiq on JSM Pictures and directed by Gubenthiran Kamatchi has been released, the film’s crew is planning to release the music in February and the movie in March.

Some of the films that Jaffer Sadiq has produced include Ameer’s Iraivan Miga Periyavan, Mangai – directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi (mentioned above), and Indira. These films were produced under the JSM Pictures banner. Interestingly, Sadiq’s X handle’s cover pic has 4 posters – the three mentioned above and a film named Maayavalai which is produced by Ameer’s own production house and co-produced by Vetrimaran’s Grass Root Film along with Jaffer Sadiq. This establishes their thick friendship more than ever.

Jaffer Sadiq has also been seen with other film personalities frequently along with Ameer.

All the three individuals seen above – Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karu Palaniappan and Vetrimaaran have peddled propaganda in favour of the DMK at various times.

Karu Palaniappan, who hosts the show Tamizha Tamizha and supposedly provided inputs for Udhayanidhi Stalin’s “Eradicate Sanatana Dharma” speech, is also vying to get a ticket for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 according to political commentator ‘Savukku’ Shankar.

Ameer and Sadiq have been seen frequently with the Chief Minister MK Stalin.

While Ameer has attempted to distance himself from Jaffer Sadiq trying to portray as no more than a director-producer relationship, it is evident from the above instances as to how thick as thieves both Ameer and Jaffer Sadiq are.

How The First Family Is Reacting

DMK’s crown prince Udhayanidhi Stalin, previously photographed alongside Sadiq contributing to the CM relief fund, has been silently removing social media posts associated with Sadiq. Following the rapid dissemination of the news of the cartel, the party leadership issued a statement within hours, officially dismissing him. 

Ironically, Kiruthiga, who passionately shares thoughts on spirituality and values on social media, had released the single of the film produced by Sadiq. Notably, Red Giant Movies is headed by her husband Udhayanidhi Stalin, albeit not on paper anymore.

Dravidianist Mindset Of Vetrimaaran & Ameer

It is a known fact that Kollywood or rather Dravidianwood as the name suggests peddles the Dravidianist propaganda through films. Vetrimaran and Ameer, part of the industry, play a major role in enabling that. Here is an example of Ameer’s opinion on Ram mandir. In an interview about the Ram mandir, he says, “Rama is not even a God in Tamil Nadu. How many temples of Rama are there? I am also from TN – do we have as many temples like Murugan, Mariyamman for Rama? Tamils never celebrated Rama Navami like they celebrated Vinayaka Chathurthi or Thai Poosam. It is not a part of our culture. Nobody asked for Ram Mandir not to be built, we only asked to not destroy a masjid and construct a temple on that site. Still, they did it. Nobody got angry also for this (hinting at tolerance).”

Vetrimaran also does his bit to whitewash Dravidianist crimes. For example, as a known supporter of the DMK, in his movie ‘Asuran’, a movie based on Keezhvenmani incident, Vetrimaran attempted to project that members of the Dravidar Kazhagam were with the Dalits during the massacre, when the truth is quite different.

Another instance where he showed his loyalty to the DMK government was just days after the victory of the DMK in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, a section of ’eminent personalities’ and various organisations in the state wrote to the then Chief Minister-designate M K Stalin requesting to withdraw the permission for the reopening of the Vedanta copper unit and to scrap the Chennai-Salem eight-lane expressway project. Among those who wrote the letter were director Vetrimaran , actor Vijay Sethupathi, and former Madras High Court judge (retd) D Hariparanthaman .  All of them also asked the DMK chief to cancel the Adani port expansion at Kattupalli, the Kanniyakumari International Container Terminal, and the Chittoor-Thachur 6-lane expressway. Interesting to note that Vijay Sethupathi’s name (who was seen at the opening of Ameer’s Law Cafe features here too.
