Riverboat casino proves its seaworthiness in new test
It was smooth sailing Wednesday for the 90 people aboard the Par-A-Dice Riverboat Casino.
"Everything went exactly as planned," said David Strow, spokesman for Boyd Gaming, parent company of the casino, on Wednesday. "We didn't have any issues."
Promptly at 5 a.m., the vessel pulled up its anchor and left the shore for a three-hour voyage. The cruise was a landmark moment for the floating casino as it's been permanently moored the last 11 years.
A new regulation passed down from the U.S. Coast Guard required the vessel to prove it was seaworthy by showing everything was in proper functioning order. It passed and will have to repeat the cruise each year.
In all, 90 people departed on the boat for the excursion. Fifty of those were casino staff members, including housekeeping, and slot and cashier cage employees, who were busy performing their usual duties. Another 37 made up the marine crew and three more Coast Guard officials. Members of the public were not invited.
"Some of our team members wanted to go along for the ride," said Strow. "It was such an unusual event."
The boat was steered north and did two runs between the Murray Baker and McClugage bridges, totaling 12 miles, before returning dockside. Several safety drills also were performed during the cruise.
Operation hours of the casino were altered just a tad - it closed 30 minutes early and reopened a little late Wednesday. "We were back at the dock and open shortly after 8 a.m.," Strow said.
The Par-A-Dice opened in November 1991. It used to make 10 cruises a day.
It stopped making daily cruises after legislation was signed in June 1999 that allowed riverboat casinos to permanently anchor dockside. The boat is now open 21 hours each day for gambling and other purposes.
