Review of Inferno 31

Basic specs..

The boat is typically equipped with a Volvo Penta diesel engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Inferno 31 is 1.86, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Inferno 31 is about 156 kg/cm, alternatively 877 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 156 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 877 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Inferno 33 is a 32 ′ 11 ″ / 10.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Håkan Södergren and built by NaBoats/Tabasco Marine (FIN) between 1984 and 1990.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Inferno 29 is a keelboat that was built from 1982 to around 1992. The model, of which 50 were sold in the first 10 months alone, is a construction by the Swedish designer Håkan Södergren in collaboration with the Swiss sailing specialist Bruno Hunkeler. The boat, developed as a unit class , was built by the Na-Boats shipyard in Nagu , Finland .

In just six months, Södergren developed the design of the new yacht based on clear guidelines from Hunkeler. The models were the popular H-boat and the J / 24 . The Inferno was developed as a sporty family yacht, with a width of 2.50 m it can be transported by land without a special permit and is exceptionally fast for its length - boats that measure 33 or 34 feet usually have a yardstick number of 98 [1] . Nevertheless, it offers enough living space for up to six people.

After the success of the 29-foot Inferno, Södergren also constructed the Inferno 26 (1984), the Inferno 28 (1985) and the Inferno 31 (around 1990).

A ballast keel hangs on the GRP hull in sandwich construction with a Divinycell core . This is filled with one ton of lead (45% of the total weight of the yacht) and contributes significantly to the stability of the ship. The balanced rudder, controlled by a tiller, hangs under the stern . The standard version includes a Yanmar 1-cylinder 7-HP built-in diesel engine with shaft and folding propeller . The sloping transom is striking.

Below deck, the boat usually offers enough space for five people, two in the bow, two on the side berths that serve as benches during the day and one in the dog berth to starboard in the aft ship. A sixth person can sleep in the middle when the table is dismantled. Due to the sporty lines of the ship, however, the cabin height is only 1.70 m. Pantry and fresh water tank with sink are also available.

The Inferno is 7/8 rigged and is usually equipped with a self-turning system. Of 12.60 m with a ship of this length unusually high mast allowed, together with the also rather lengthy large tree an area of 24 m 2 for the mainsail. Instead of Selbstwendefock 14.5 m 2 can also be a 24 m 2 - Genoa be mounted, whereby the sail load rating is above 5.2. This means that the Inferno has excellent light wind properties. The ship is one-handed to sail, as all lines in the cockpit are folded and the jib winches can be operated directly from the helmsman's seat.

Shortly after its introduction, the Inferno attracted attention with several surprising regatta victories:

  • Day and night, sailing club Tribschenhorn (Lake Lucerne)
  • Blue ribbon, Weggis
  • Gotland round
  • Stockholm Race
  • Scandicap Race Hanko
  • Scandicap Race Helsinki

The Inferno was also able to convince yacht testers during test drives. Luis Gazzari from the Yachtrevue about ruled: "By Inferno 29 is the duo Hunkeler Södergren achieved a very good compromise between performance and comfort. Despite excellent sailing characteristics, the ship is pleasant to handle and, in conjunction with the self-tacking jib, can also be sailed well with one hand. Further advantages are the one-class status, which keeps costs within limits, and the good fin (n) ish. "

COMMENTS

  1. INFERNO 31

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  4. Review of Finngulf 31

The Finngulf 31 is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel. The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.
