Gulfstar 44 review: one of the best designs ever.

Vince Lazzara was not a beginner when he started Gulfstar in 1970. He had previously co-owned Columbia Yachts. Lazzara keenly knew what would sell and big bathtub motorsailers were in demand in the early 1970’s. If you wanted a powerboat, they pumped out an early Gulfstar. If you wanted a sailboat, they would stick on a mast like the 53 motorsailer which doubled as a displacement trawler. Gulfstar produced roomy motorsailers in their Tampa Bay factory. Around 1978 when consumer tastes changed so did Gulfstar. Lazzara switched to producing high performance sailboats. There is confusion with the 44 Gulfstar because they produced an early 1970’s motorsailer version. The early 1980’s Gulfstar 44 CC is a whole different animal and one these performance designs.

John Kretschmer, a former Hylas skipper, said one time to me about the Gulfstar 44, “You know that’s a great design. I’m as connected to Hylas as anybody but I’d say the Gulfstar 44 is a better design than the Hylas 44. It’s the boat everybody’s looking for. Add a few more portholes to get more light in the interior and…I can’t think of a better design.” Lazzara was a master of beauty above, speed below, and comfort inside. You’ll find these with either an athwartship king or centerline queen aft. The step down U-shaped galley is seaworthy with great headroom. If you are looking at 44 Peterson or 44 Hylases, you might also consider the 44 Gulfstar.

First Impressions What gives the Gulfstar 44 more flair than other designs is her counter stern. Lazzara pulled it off well on the 44 as the slight overhang and reverse transom combine for a handsome look – not modern or classic. This 44-footer is one of those designs in life that keeps in style while the passing fancies cascade away. Gulfstar brochures credit the design to R. C. “Dick” Lazzara, Vince’s son, but you can see a heavy influence of dear old dad. Underneath she has a modern fin keel and skeg hung rudder. Overall, Lazzara helped pioneer the raked bow centercockpit cruiser look we see today in most production boats. Her cabintrunk is modest with a slight sheer. She is nice with that touch of flair with the stern. She has quite a bit of teak on deck in the cockpit. A fine teak toerail runs around along with the handles. If you are looking for the lowest maintenance boat, the 44 is a more classic, prettier style with the wood. It does not have all stainless steel or plastic as these days you will find on sensible production yachts.

Construction There are two different tracks here that are important to keep distinct: design and construction. As the designs moved from motorsailers to performance centercockpit cruisers, the construction on a separate tack improved. These are not really related. It is not that Gulfstar made all motorsailers inexpensively or all cruisers high quality. It just so happened that as they became more experienced and improved their workmanship, they switched to building a different type of design. Late model motorsailers like the 47 Sailmaster series benefited from the increase in skills at the Gulfstar factory.

In the early 1970’s, Gulfstar construction was lower quality than later on. When I say lower quality, I can illustrate this by certain techniques. In general the dividing line is somewhere around 1978. Before 1978, the interiors were mostly Formica – inexpensive and functional. After then, the interiors were teak verneer and used a patented process to camber edges. The dark teak joinery work is as good or better than any manufacturer out there especially in the late 1980’s. Also before 1978 approximately, they used iron ballast and afterwords lead ballast both encapsulated. Lead ballast is one of the fundamental ways to improve performance by using a denser material to lower center of gravity. All the Gulfstar 44’s, most the 50’s, and all the 47’s have lead ballast. Gulfstar used a solid hull layup and balsa core deck. Longitudinal stringers and transverse floors stiffen the hull. The joint is the traditional inner flange bolted and glued with 5200. The mast is keel stepped.

But despite the increase in quality as Gulfstar became more experienced, they were still hit hard by blister problems throughout. The oil embargo caused all manufacturers in this era to try innovative ways to save resin. The chopper gun probably affected them too. And this was before the wide use of blister preventing vinylester resins. If there is one thing that even later Gulfstars including 44’s can be affected by, that is blister problems. They call this the blister pox of the 1980’s. I think it is critical to ask about the blister history and last time a bottom job has been done on a Gulfstar irrespective of the era.

Down Below Down below is really where the Gulfstar 44 shines. The dark teak joinery work is stunning and attests to the high quality of Gulfstar’s later workmanship. The layout with her aft stateroom is nice. One of the most attractive combinations clients look for is a centerline queen aft stateroom as on the Mark II versions. The Mark I versions have an athwartship king which is a practical, seaworthy berth and impressive as well. On the layout, you can see she has a large berth aft. And she has two heads with separate showers for and aft. The heads look like they have slightly different orientation of the sink and shower between the Mark I and II versions according to company literature. Another great feature is the step down galley. The 44 has nice headroom anyway but with the step down galley even the tallest came stand up straight. And, the galley is tight and seaworthy without seeming small. If I designed a boat, I would make the galley just like the 44.

Engine and Underway The engine room is not the best I have seen. It is large and similar to the 50 Gulfstar but a little lower and further in there. Access is via the passageway and a cutout from the aft stateroom. The engine is either the venerable Perkins 4-108 or 4-154. Expect the 4-108 to burn oil, but otherwise run like a top if properly maintained. The beefier 4-154 is great except that parts are hard to find. There is plenty of room for a generator, watermaker, and other additional equipment. In general when looking at brokerage listing you will see those with high and low hour engines. Clients clearly prefer a newer, lower hour engine and the price differential is somewhere like $20k to $30k.

One owner of the Gulfstar 44 described her in heavy seas, “She really handles well and loves rough weather. The rougher it gets the better she performs. We took a trip on a catamaran which really pounded to Australia. We should have taken our 44. She does never pounds but smooth rides. We always feel safe and controlled.” She is a heavier cruiser and known to sail far and wide. You can feel down below her strength and quality. With her fin keel and skeg hung rudder, she is a performance cruiser unlike the early model 44’s which were motorsailers that should not be taken offshore.

I sea-trialed a 44 on a beautiful Fall day in Fort Lauderdale. A tropical storm had sucked out all the bad weather, and a cold front was providing cloud cover and cool air. In 10 knots true from the north east and light swell, we raced along maxing out at 4.8 knots on a broad reach with main and a 120% jib outside the Port Everglades cut. We tacked and close hauled to windward making a couple knots into the light breeze.

Conclusion In the beginning, they did not know what they were doing quality-wise and produced poor performing designs. In the middle and later, they got it together and produced some great boats. Gulfstars of the early 1970’s like the early 44 motorsailers are suspect quality boats. But around 1978 and onward, they produced some great designs including the Gulfstar 44. Gulfstar switched again later on as the Lazzara sons who were powerboat guys got involved. While keeping the quality, they switched to displacement motor yachts of which the 54 Motor Cruiser is the best example. By 1990, they were producing solely powerboats and sold the company to Viking Yachts. The Lazzara sons formed the super yacht company Lazzara Yachts which continues to today. Gulfstar 44’s are attractive values and comparable to Hylas 44’s. You can find these for somewhere between $100,000 to $140,000 on the brokerage market.

Description.

- Stock #Take alook at this hard-to-find sloop! Snap this one up before it is gone. Are you in the market for a cruising sailboat? Look no further! This 1982 Gulfstar 44 is a beautiful boat that has been maintained and is in great condition, the owner confirms. With a length of 44' 8" and a beam of 13' 2", this center cockpit sailboat offers plenty of room for relaxation and enjoyment on the water. Powered by a Perkins 4-108 diesel engine, this boat provides 10 nautical miles per gallon at 5 to 6 knots cruising with a custom-made Gori 23x13 folding propeller. Equipped with 280 watts of solar power and a 400W Airgen wind generator, you'll have plenty of power options while out on the water. With 2 cabins and 2 heads, this boat is perfect for those looking for comfort and style while cruising. So, what are you waiting for? Come check out this beautiful Gulfstar 44 today! I acquired Sea Hawk in 1982 and over the years made many improvements to her as outlined below: The boat had suffered some below water hull damage during Hurricane Bob in 1991. All damaged hull fiberglass was removed and replaced using West Epoxy and biaxial fiberglass, better materials than used in her construction. The bottom had been peeled when acquired and I had the whole bottom and keel covered with 21 oz biaxial fiberglass cloth and west epoxy and then sealed with Interlux Inter Portect 200E so blistering will never be a problem. A new Rudder and Skeg were made using waterproof plywood covered with Biaxial fiberglass cloth and west epoxy to replace the damaged components. The propeller shaft which had a very slight bend in the taper region, and the propeller were replaced. The bent 3 blade fixed propeller was replaced by a 2 blade geared folding GORI propeller, custom modified over the next two years to be a 23 x 13 propeller which provides excellent cruising mileage of 10 nmpg, generally unheard of in a 26,000 pound sailboat. The propeller shaft is spiral wrapped with fiberglass roving and west Epoxy to provide a non chipping coating for the bottom paint to adhere to. A new zinc collar is also attached to the shaft. The Cutlass bearing has been recently replaced so no maintenance in this regard will be needed for about 10 years of normal use. The original design skeg bolted on by five studs in a row, which failed was replaced for over $20,000, by a superior design and materials skeg with two larger diameter bolts to the side and 3 others in line, and attached from the inside so the rudder does not have to be dropped to remove the skeg, should that ever be necessary. The new skeg has only a partial sesason of use since installed. The spider around the rudder post was also strengthened when the new skeg was installed. The steering cables to the pedestal have also been replaced. The aft end of the keel has been extended by about 15" to allow for good hydrodynamic fairing instead of the as built thick rounded trailing edge, to improve speed and balance of the boat under sail. The bottom paint is Interlux Micron 66, the best available ablative bottom paint from Interlux for use in salt water. A fresh coat will be applied before launching for the purchaser.. The Perkins 4-108 engine has very few hours on it for a boat of this age since I was able to sail it in and out of the harbor in Cotuit MA. The total hours are well under 2500. The oil was changed at the end of each season with Mobil Delvac or synthetic Mobil oil since new. The transmission was completely filled to prevent corrosion at haul out and drained to the correct use level when launched in the spring. The interior teak bulkheads and panels have been coated with West Epoxy coating resin to eliminate the need to re oil the teak every year. The solid teak wood doors have also been sealed with coating epoxy and then varnished with West System varnish for a beautiful finish. The aft cabin cushions have been replaced with 6" thick foam to provide a more comfortable sleeping surface. The forward Vee Birth cushions and covers have been replaced by 5" thick foam. All cushion covers are made from machine washable fabrics. A refrigeration unit was added to the ice box after the boat was equipped with a 285 watt solar panel which more than supplies the electricity needs of the boat in sunny weather. Ice cubes can be made under the cold air supply from the refrigeration unit. A wind generator mounted at the stern is also supplied to augment the solar panel output on cloudy windy days. The original Signet instruments are available but have been replaced by Silva / Nexus instruments with much improved displays. Fixed and hand held VHF radios are supplied. The Furuno radar display is mounted on a custom bracket that allows the display to be seen from the chart table or pushed up through the galley overhead hatch to be seen from the cockpit. A new, one season ago, maximum size varnished cockpit teak table has been made and fitted, which is 60% larger than the original cockpit table, which is also available. The teak cap rail around the cockpit has just been refinished, and all exterior teak has been kept varnished since the boat was new. A large dodger extending back to the pedestal is included along with a smaller dodger and a Bimini which was used by the original owner. I'm the second owner. The mast, spreaders and boom have been maintained with Awlgrip two part polyurethane paint since new. The brackets for attaching the lower spreaders to the mast were reinforced and structurally improved after one of them failed under sail. The top plates on the turning blocks were replaced with stronger and thicker plates to improve the free running of the sheaves. The bolts holding the side rail tracks were replaced in way of normal trimming car locations with superior strength stainless steel after one of the heads on the original bolts snapped off due to hidden corrosion cracking. The standing rigging was inspected with the mast down since the boat was hauled and found to be in good condition, in the most recent survey, and the boat has never been struck by lightening. The advertised sale price includes replacing the standing rigging if wanted or an allowance (of about $7k) will be made for those not wanting to have the rig replaced. Sails are what power a sailboat! Since great performance was desired, the original sails, that come with the boat, were replaced by North Sails Main and 2 152% genoas. These sails have powered the boat to numerous New England race wins including the Venona prize for the "Round the Vineyard race" which we won both in class and overall including all classes based on our PHRF corrected time ?? Other race wins include the Buzzards Bay Regatta and several Whalers races around Block Island. Also installed is a removable inner headstay about 6" aft of the Harken roller furler which replaced the original Hood roller furler, and the replaced headsay, for which two hank on sails are included one about 120% and one a storm sail. Full spinnaker gear including an 18' spinnaker pole, mast track, topping lift and sheets are supplied along with a working spinnaker, (not measured for racing). A 45 pound CQR plow anchor and 14' 3/8" stainless steel anchor chain and rode are the normal anchoring gear and a 22 pound Danforth anchor, chain and rode is also supplied. Model GFS 44

Category Sloop Sailboats

1982 Gulfstar GFS 44 Rarely does a yacht of this vintage come on the market that has been maintained to such exacting standards. Under the stewardship of her second owner, Sea Hawk has proven to be a competitive racer and a fast and able cruiser. The interior features a very roomy main salon, galley, forward vee birth, navigation station, aft cabin with dedicated head with separate shower, another head accessible from both the main salon as well as the vee birth, ample storage throughout the entire vessel and an engine room with access through two points of entry. The interior teak has been coated with West Clear Epoxy for a rich appearance requiring very low maintenance. The sail inventory includes a North Mainsail with 2 full battens and 3 sets of reef points in good condition; a North 152% Genoa in excellent condition on a Harken roller furler system; an extra Mainsail and 130% Genoa; a working spinnaker with 18’ spinnaker pole. The rig includes a removable inner head stay for a hank-on heavy air jib. The mast and boom maintained with Awlgrip. This Gulfstar 44 is powered by the original Perkins 4-108 engine with fewer than 2500 hours of use. It has always run with Mobil 1 synthetic oil. The Perkins provides 10 nautical miles per gallon at 5-6 knot cruising speed with a custom Gori 23x13 folding propeller. Maximum motoring speed over 7.8 knots. The hull bottom has been resurfaced with 24oz biaxial fiberglass cloth and West Epoxy so blisters will never be a problem. Micron 66 bottom paint wet sanded for superior performance and anti-fouling. A 280 watt solar panel with MPPT controller and 400 watt Airgen wind generator produce sufficient power eliminating the need for a generator. A Furuno radar is mounted on an aft pole. Ground tackle includes a 45 pound Plow anchor with 3/8” SS chain plus nylon rode; a Danforth 22# and similar lunch hook anchor 14# are included. 2013 Custom made skeg over 20kSpent Kingman Marine

1981 Gulfstar Center Cockpit

1981 Gulfstar Center Cockpit

New Bern, North Carolina

Model Center Cockpit

1981 Gulfstar Center Cockpit Oz is a proven cruising/live aboard vessel with numerous upgrades. Her current owners have cruised on her up to six months a year (stored on hard and covered the rest of the year), for the last 13 years and maintained her in excellent condition. The two previous owners sailed Oz for 20 years on the Great Lakes during the summers and stored on land for the off season. Previous to 2002, she was a fresh water boat used only for 4-5 months a year. The Gulfstar 44, designed by Lazzarra,  has a long fin/modified full keel with a skeg hung rudder. She is a cutter rig with roller furling Genoa and Main sails. She has all the features a serious sailor wants for long distance cruising, but she can be a showpiece for anyone who wants to live on her in a Marina. This vessel has a great design for coastal cruising, blue water sailing or simply spending a year or more in the Caribbean. She has enough displacement to make her comfortable in a good blow, yet a large enough sail plan to crank off the miles on those long passages. This  is a beautifully maintained example of a very comfortable cruising yacht that can be easily sailed by a couple and conveniently sleeps six. We encourage you to read the full specifications to see what an outstanding cruiser the Gulfstar 44 is and then call us to arrange a showing.Gulfstar 44 Review: One of the Best Designs Ever Read the full review at: http://www.jordanyachts.com/archives/1805
