A sad day for powerboating

In what turned out to be an emotionally charged UIM F2 Drivers Briefing prior to the final round of the UIM F2 2022 World Championship Pelle Larsson the UIM F2 Race Director announced he was standing down from the role and that he has also decided now was the time to leave the UIM.

In a carefully prepared speech he informed all the drivers and their radio personnel that this would be his last F2 and would leave all his assignments within powerboating in UIM and at national level.

‘Of course, there are several reasons why I have made this decision, but I don’t want to have any bitter taste in my mouth when I’m leaving, but there is one thing that still annoys me, that I want to explain, I think some of you already know or have understood that something was wrong at the beginning of the season.’

I had decided to stop working for UIM back in December 2021. It was about what happen in the two XCat race that happened in Fujairah and Dubai, what was happen there during the race and especially after. That was the moment I lost most of my respect for UIM because a high ranking UIM guy did something he did not have a clue about. Sure, we all make mistake, but we must be able to admit the mistake, and understand that you made mistake, you cannot just go on like nothing happen.’

‘What happened to the Abu Dhabi XCat Team, was for me a total disaster. I was Race Director, but I did not make any decision on this case. They were made over my head, I heard that something was going on, and even today I still don’t know the whole outcome of it. The way one man was acting for those two weeks to me and to the others who were working hard for this sport is not acceptable in my world. I normally leave behind things that happen on race site on my way back home, but this is still stuck with me.’ ‘I want to take this opportunity to apologies to Abu Dhabi, how wrong they were treated and how others team, and the public have treated them after the wrong decisions that come out, and still now no one know exactly what the outcome was, maybe someone should explain?’

‘To make this story short, after these two XCat races I made my decision already in my report, to STOP. The UIM Secretary General Thomas Kurth and I had many conversations about this, but I was clear about my decision. Then we came to February and closer to the F2 season start. It had already started with emails, messenger, and phone calls, teams wondering what was happening with F2 for 2022. Then I start thinking and saying to myself, I do not want to be the bad guy here, leaving F2 so close to the season start, that’s why I decided to stay for 2022. Working with the UIM office, has been perfect, easy to work with them, I have known them for many years, especially Chantal Mercadier, who is Head of the Office there.’

‘On purely a personal level I am also need at home more to take care of my wife; we been married for nearly fort-four years, so it is my duty to be close to Gerd to help care for her while she undergoes treatment for her illness. I will continue my work as General Secretary at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, so I will still be involved with boats, more like pleasure boats though but certainly not as so much as I have put into boat racing since I started way back in 1971.’ ‘I want to take the opportunity to thank you all for all these year in F2 family, you have meant a lot to me, and you have taught me a lot. For sure I going to miss all this.’

‘To be honest I have been mentally training for this moment since February and now it’s time go out and do a great race together, see you soon at prize giving to celebrate the 2022 F2 World Champion.’

The Drivers Briefing concluded with a three-minute standing ovation from the UIM F2 racers and their radio personnel, with several of them coming up to hug Pelle as a sign of their thanks to him.

UIM F2 World Championship 2017 – Antwerp

Hot of the press. In the weekend of July 21 the UIM F2 World Championship 2017 will take place in Antwerp,  Belgium. We invite all supporters there. Excellent concept: the entrance is free and the arena is in front of the ‘Zuiderterras’, a walking terrace along the river Scheldt. The venue is quite unique, it is located very close to the pictoresk part of Antwerp with lots of restaurants, pubs, shops and the Town Hall. Be there, we will!

Avtodor fought to the end, PARMA wins!

PARMA beat Avtodor in Saratov – 93:89 (26:18, 23:25, 23:28, 21:18).

Game progress The Perm team took the lead in the first quarter and reached double-digit difference several times throughout the first half. The hosts defense couldn’t stop Isaiah Reese: he had 17 points and 6 assists by the halftime. By the end of the first half, Rayshawn Hammonds and Dusan Beslac cut the guests lead to 6 points (49:43), but not for long. PARMA started the third quarter with another push and had a 13-point lead.

The Saratov team managed to regain the intrigue. And-one by Dmitry Khaldeev, Dominik Mavra three-pointers and the guests lead began to quickly decrease. The excited hosts doubled the pace, and soon Vasilije Pusica gave Avtodor its first lead of the game – 71:70!

Key moment The ending became a real shootout. The hosts held the lead, but Aleksandr Platunov got the hot hand. His 8 points in a row helped PARMA retake the lead. Mavra responded with an and-one, but Platunov was unstoppable. First, he delivered an assist to Stanislav Ilnitskiy to three-pointer, and 20 seconds before the end made another shot. PARMA continues to battle with MBA and Astana for the Playoffs spot.

X-factor PARMA starting five made a major contribution to the win with 91 of the team’s 93 points. B.J. Johnson and Isaiah Reese led the guests offense, but Aleksandr Platunov had the final word. The Russian guard 28 points is his United League career-high.

Fact Avtodor and PARMA had established win/loss ratio. The Perm team pulled away from Avtodor in the standings with tonight’s win. By the way, PARMA win in Saratov in January had almost the same scenario – 95:94.

In the early years, Walter was part of the Frank parish.  A new Lutheran church was dedicated in Walter in 1902.

The church was the largest and most important building in the village. In the Volga region, the Lutheran and Catholic churches of the colonies were usually built in a very traditional architectural style that reflected the colonists' German heritage. All the colonists of Walter were Lutheran and the religious life of the community was tightly tied to the nearby larger Colony of Frank. Walter was in the parish of Frank and the pastors of Frank served Walter and Walter-Khutor and made scheduled visits to conduct religious services. Walter's youth went to Frank for religious instruction and for Confirmation. There was a large parish church in Frank, and later Walter built its village church. The proximity of the two villages of Walter and Frank, as well as others nearby, resulted in inter-village marriages and a blending of the surnames between villages. This was especially true with the villages of Frank, Kolb, and Hussenbach.

The village of Walter had only one church - which was fairly good sized - though certainly not as elaborate as the huge church in Frank which held several thousand people. The present-day Lutheran church in Walter was preceded by a series of earlier, wooden buildings - the last being a wooden prayer house for 1500 people. The new church was a large brick building about 60 feet tall. It was apparently built in the 1880's and mostly finished by 1894, however construction work continued until the church was formally dedicated in 1902. It had a steeple with a big gold cross on top and there were five church bells that were hung inside the tower. The bells were used to communicate with the villagers; ring a call to prayer and services; toll deaths in the community; as a fire alarm, and in the winter, during blizzards, they were rung through the night to help travelers locate the village. There were balconies all around inside so it could hold a lot of people. The church at Walter also had pews inside which was very unusual among the Volga German churches. As was the custom, people did not sit in families. The men would sit on one side and the women on the other. This was the way it had been done in Germany. There was also a big pipe organ and the people used their "Lieders" or songbooks. Walter-Khutor had a "Bethaus" or prayer house. By 1798, there was a school house in which the school teacher, or "Schulmeister", taught reading. writing and religion under the supervision of the pastor.

Walter was founded on 25 August 1767 by the Government as a Lutheran colony. Walter was located on the "Bergseite" or hilly side of the Volga River about 70 miles west of the city of Saratov, about three or four days journey by wagon. Walter was in Saratov Gubneria - an administrative province. Walter belonged to the "Kanton" or Canton of Frank - a county judicial division that included the villages of Frank, Walter, Kolb, Hussenbach, and later the daughter colonies of Frank Khutor, and Walter Khutor. Walter bordered the colonies of Frank, main city of the region, which was about 3 miles away and Kolb which was about 5 miles away.

The Volga colonies were first given a numerical designation before receiving an official Russian name so the name of the first "vorsteher" or mayor was often adopted by the colonists as their village's name. This was true for the colony of Walter. Walter's original Emigration List shows their first "vorsteher" was a 45-year-old farmer, Peter Walter , who came from the village of Kirch Beerfurth in the County of Erbach, Unterhessen (now Hesse-Darmstadt), Germany. At the 1798 census, the vorsteher was Peter Mahr. The official Russian name of Walter was Gretschinnaja-Luka which has been translated several different ways, including "Gretschin's pond or meadow" meaning that it had once belonged to a [Russian] family named Gretschin. Locally, it was nicknamed "Buckwheat Bend" since it was located on the bend of the river. In later years, it was more often known as "Buckwheat Meadows." Currently, the Russian name is Grechinaya Luka.

A census record of the first settlers was made on August 25 and September 10, 1767, shortly after their arrival in the colony. It lists 177 males and 199 females, totaling 376 persons. In the next few years, additional family members came from Germany to join those who had emigrated that first year. Other families immigrated to the new colony during the first few difficult years of settlement, some coming from other colonies on the Volga. Five years after its founding, Walter had a population of 431 in 1772. The revision or census taken on November 10, 1798, lists 413 males, and 349 females, totaling 762 persons in 199 families. There were 208 men able to work and 205 who were not able to work. By 1897, it had risen to 5,900 and in 1912 - the population had reached 6,660 even though many had already left for the counties of the Western Hemisphere. The last reported census figures in 1926 clearly shows the outward migration as the population had now dropped to 2,739. It is not known if these census figures include the daughter colony of Walter Khutor.
