Guide to Palermo

A charming Sicilian city rich in cultural history

The stunning city of Palermo is an instant eye-catching destination for all superyacht charters. Situated on the northern coast of Sicily, the central Mediterranean isle is also in close proximity to Naples and Ajaccio making it the ideal base for yacht charter enthusiasts who want to visit the best destinations within the region.

With an abundance of Italian architecture, culture, and history to explore, Palermo offers the distinctive warmth of an authentic Mediterranean holiday as well as an insight into the storied history and rich tradition of the wondrous city. Boasting over 100 churches and hosting 12 UNESCO sites across the Palermo province, it’s easy to see why the city was bestowed with the ‘Capital of Culture’ award in 2018. Home to the third-largest theater in Europe, Teatro Massimo, and a Royal Palace, Palazzo dei Normanni, be sure to spend a day winding through the city’s Sicilian streets, taking in the city’s jumbled layers of architecture as you go.

The essential sights are mostly found in the center and are easy to cover on foot. After enjoying a sumptuous breakfast aboard your superyacht, venture inland to visit the Cattedrale di Palermo. A prime example of Sicily’s unique Arab-Norman architectural style, the cathedral stands proudly in the city’s center showing off its array of geometric patterns and blind arches. Wander up to the roof of the cathedral to enjoy panoramic views over the beautiful city.

For lovers of art and architecture, make sure not to miss the extraordinary chapel of Cappella Palatina. Designed by Roger II in 1130, the chapel’s well-lit interior is simply breathtaking. Its glittering gold mosaics are complemented by inlaid marble floors and a magnificent vaulted ceiling. Every inch of the chapel is lined with precious stone giving the space a lustrous quality upon your entry. The bulk of the mosaics recount the tales of the Old Testament and capture expressions, detail and movement with extraordinary grace and detail. This is definitely a location not to be missed during your yacht charter vacation.

As the biggest city in Sicily, Palermo is a cultural hotspot offering a vibrant nightlife and plenty of places to unwind. After a long day exploring, head over to La Kalsa which hosts many chic bars serving refreshing apéritifs. One of the city’s favorites is Palermo’s first original cocktail bar Bocum . With a stylish interior and many funky, lavish objects to wonder at, this bar has a spectacular long-lived reputation. Spend an evening here relaxing and taking in the modern art around you as you sip on the finest of cocktails.

First settled in Roman times, the Sicilian capital of Palermo is a buzzing cosmopolitan city that while Italian is one with roots in a range of other cultures as well. Do try to spend a day or two at the beginning of your Palermo yacht charter to explore this pearl of the Mediterranean.

Palermo and Sicily have only been under Italy's control since 1861 - just 160 or so years of a history that dates back Millennia. One of the artefacts of its absorption into the united kingdom of Italy is the Teatro Massimo, the third largest opera house in Europe after Vienna and Paris. Even if opera isn't your thing you can explore the building, that took 20 years to build, with a guided tour.

In terms of time of control, the Arabs had a bigger influence over the Sicilian capital. Taking over the island in the 9th Century the Arabs called the city Bal'harm and ruled over it from 831 to 1087. You will see many markets in the city today that are redolent of souks in North Africa. Visit the Palazzo dei Normanni - not a Norman palace but an Arab one - with its jaw dropping decoration throughout.

The Normans - yes, the Viking descendants who invaded the UK - have had an influence on Palermo too. In the 12th Century they built the cathedral in Palermo, which is at least as good as those you will see in Normandy or the UK.

Explore Palermo By Renting A Yacht

For those who are after a beautiful beach, a short ride out of Palermo will take you to the beach resort of Mondello, a former fishing town that is now one of the best holiday towns in Sicily. The art nouveau Antico Stabilimento Balneare can't be ignored with its piano bar adding a certain Sicilian feel to this unique beach resort.

Starting in the middle of the north coast of Sicily, a Palermo yacht charter can take you east or west. Whether on a sailboat or motor boat, many bareboat and luxury yacht charters will involve heading east and out across the Mediterranean Sea to the Aeolian Island chain, a volcanic island group that includes Stromboli, Vulcano, Lipari, Salina and Panarea. In the winter months their populations are those of a small village but come the high summer months the area is busier. They come for a reason - you just won't see somewhere like these volcanic island chain anywhere else in Europe. Beach lovers will love a volcanic black sandy beach as an alternative to what you will find elsewhere. Those with walking boots can climb to the mouths of the volcanoes.

On your yachting holiday, heading west out of Palermo on your Sicily yacht charter there is lots to explore. The Aegadian islands (aka Egadi Islands) off the north west tip of the island are a place so quiet you can forget the world, even at the height of the tourist season. Not as popular as the Aeolian island chain, they could well be a destination if the sound of the wind on your rigging is more appealing than the buzz of others outside your group sharing your fun. Humanity has been around since pre-history, as can be seen in the cave paintings there.

On the coast to the east of the Egadi islands is somewhere the British have made famous with their fondness for Marsala wine. Marsala itself is an important town on the coast and those with a fondness for wine can explore the source of this red nectar.

How To Get To Palermo

Palermo Airport

This is an important airport for the island - both for commerce and its tourist trade. As such it has flights from mainland Italy and much of Europe throughout the week, and charter flights coming in during the summer months.

Take a bus or taxi into the city, there are plenty running at all times.

Marinas In Palermo

Suggested Sailing Routes From Palermo

Sicily is an archipelago of islands, with smaller island groups off the coast of the main island. Whether on a bareboat charter or luxury yacht charter , a sailing holiday out of Palermo will almost certainly take you to watch the volcano of Stromboli release its fireworks into the night. A longer trip will take that in and head off to the quieter Egadi islands and a chance to explore Marsala.

7 days - Aeolian Islands and Stromboli: This is an opportunity to sail off and see some live and extinct volcanoes. Stromboli is currently one of the most active on the Mediterranean, and a night watching it release its magma is almost an essential stop on a sailing holiday out of Palermo! The other islands in the Aeolian group are Vulcano, Lipari, Salina and Panarea, where you will spend an day at each, exploring their natural wonders high up and even in the sapphire blue sea around them.

14 days - Aeolian and Egadi Islands: Your first half of the holiday will be out to Stromboli and the volcanic Aeolian islands. You will then head east where you can explore the NE coast of Sicily and its famous Marsala wine. Just off the coast here are the Aegadi Islands that while extremely laid back today have seen their fair share of history - the Romans signed a peace treaty with Carthage there. Each island has its idiosyncrasy but all have one thing in common they are delightfully quiet.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Palermo

As a subtropical archipelago of islands, Sicily is good for sailing between March and October. Choosing the time to charter a yacht is very much down to your tastes. Some like the hurly burly of fighting for mooring space in a marina and the buzz of a holiday town at full blast. If that's to your taste then do do the trip in the heat of July and August. Remember though that as with all other Italian marinas you will find that the prices go up at this time of year.

September and October can be a little cooler but the seas remain warm. You may get a bit of rain and even the windy period but it's still warmer than in Northern Europe or New England. The towns are quieter too and the locals perhaps less busy enough to spend more time with you, helping you deepen your appreciation of the nation.

If you can get to Sicily during school term time - in May perhaps - you will get the warmth without the crowds.

Sailing Weather In Palermo

It does rain in Sicily but largely at higher altitudes on the mountainous interior. At lower levels - sea level - the islands often see drought come summer. Autumn and winter see the most rainfall.

In terms of the wind, two of them dominate the Sicily climate:

Sirocco: This is a hot southerly wind that brings fierce heat from Africa. Recently temperatures have topped 40 degrees C fairly regularly, even in seaside towns like Trapani. Having crossed the Med it often bears humidity too.

Mistral: This is the northerly mountain wind from the Rhone Valley in France that often catches sailors unawares throughout the year. It can get quite strong at any time of the year but there is one advantage - it is a cool wind that will often be a relief from the Sirocco.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider for a boat rental are what your budget is, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Palermo?

The main marina is Marina Villa Igiea (Acquasanta). This has 379 berths and can accommodate even larger yachts of up to 65m. There are two other marinas - Marina Palermo (70 berths) and Marina Arenella (90 berths).

When are the best times to hire a boat in Palermo?

During high season the weather is at its hottest, the crowds at their busiest and the marinas in Palermo charge a premium. As such if you can get there outside of July and August you may find it cooler, less busy and a lot less expensive!

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Palermo?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Palermo?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

PALERMO: SICILIAN ART, HISTORY AND TRADITION

An masterpiece of arab-norman culture, the cradle of the mediterranean civilization, palermo is one of italy’s most gorgeous cities and certainly one of the wonders of the world. not too popular with tourists, it is, instead, a unique melting-pot of art and tradition that cannot be missing from you top-destination list. palermo brings to mind a fragrant sea breeze, colorful collages of characteristic carts, and the smell of mouth-watering delicacies, like the famous cassata and cannolo..

Palermo’s harbor easily accommodates private boats. Porto Arenella – its modern marina geared toward international nautical tourism – is perfect for those who hire a luxury yacht in Sicily . Also, its strategic position makes it an excellent location to sail out on an exploration of the nearby Aeolian islands (Lipari, Filicudi, Alicudi, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, and Vulcano).

The many civilizations that dominated Palermo throughout the centuries left their mark in the city’s architecture, which is, in fact, a mix of styles, scents, flavors, and traditions. What to see in Palermo ? There is so much to choose from: from the Cathedral to the Martorana Church built by the Arabs, to the Royal Palace with the Palatine Chapel embellished with precious Byzantine mosaics and considered one Sicily’s best ones, to the famous catacombs.

Sweet tooths can’t resist the mouth-watering Sicilian pastries including cannoli, cassate, arancini, and panelle, and the colorful granitas to taste on sweltering days before retreating to a luxury charter, ready to take off to the island’s best beaches .

Palermo’s top-rated beaches

Must-visit beaches in Palermo are Cala Gallo (a rocky spot located in the Capo Gallo Nature Reserve ) and Capaci . Cala Gallo’s deep waters a great for scuba diving, while Capaci’s sandy and shallow shore is fit for snorkelling . More lovely spots are Addura , overlooking the Gulf of Mondello, Sferracavallo , and Vergine Maria (also known as Arenella), where you can dine on excellent fish. Mondello , Santa Flavia, and Secca delle Formire are other popular retreats, the latter a renowned dive site.

A perfect mix of sea, architecture, history, and gastronomy, Palermo will not disappoint the cruisers who choose it for their luxury charter in the Mediterranean !

Six things you need to know before embarking on a yacht charter in Palermo!

1. street food capital of europe.

In 2015, Palermo proudly reigned as Europe’s street food capital and it’s not surprising! Having been founded by the Phoceans and subsequently passing under Arab, Norman and other regimes, Sicilian cuisine is indeed unique. If you’re a fan of Greek, Arab, Spanish or French cuisine, you’ll happily enjoy your food experiences here. Be sure to try the ‘arancini’ rice balls, ‘gelato’ – Italy is the birthplace of this delicious ice-cream desert, and ‘cannoli’ – a shell-shaped biscuit stuffed with ricotta.

2. One of the most visited cities in Europe

If you’re looking for a reason to charter a yacht in Palermo, here it is: The city derives its name from the Greek work ‘Panoremus’ which means ‘always fit for landing in’ – most likely called-so because of its strategic location in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Palermo’s metropolitan area is Italy’s fifth most populated, boasting approximately 1.2 million people. The locals speak Italian as well as a ‘Palermitan’ dialect of the Sicilian language.

2. Rich history

The story of Palermo dates to the 8th century BC, when the Phoceans founded the city. Today, it is Palermo’s diverse architecture that betrays its tempestuous past. In the city centre you can admire the Massimo Theatre, the largest opera theatre in the country, and the Politeama Garibaldi Theatre, a great architectural work created for the leisure and entertainment of the local people. In Corso Vittorio Emanuele, you can visit the Palermo Cathedral, in 2015 recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On that note, did you know that the Sicily region has the most UNESCO World Heritage sites in all of Italy? A yacht charter in Palermo is the perfect way to drift back in time and explore Italy’s past!

3. Like Paris, Palermo has catacombs too!

Explore the Capuchin Catacombs; an eerie labyrinth under the city of Palermo. Here you’ll walk amongst 8,000 bodies, each one dressed in the attire of their respective era. Some corpses are still perfectly preserved… ready to test yourself? See if you’ve got what it takes to spend a morning or afternoon in Palermo’s catacombs!

4. Palermo’s musical supergroup

What better way to connect with the local culture of Palermo than through music? Take yourself to a Teatro Ditirammu concert and enjoy an evening full of folk songs and entertainment. This family-run company consists of an ensemble of around 12 musicians and singers who create a thoroughly entertaining environment. Sit back, relax with a glass of Marsala wine and enjoy the night.

5. A holy mountain that sounds like a popular bottled-water brand

Monte Pellegrino (not to be mistaken with San Pellegrino water!), a 606-metre-high mountain, was once the home of the patron saint of Italy. Rosalia di Sinibaldo lived here during the 12th century. Legend has it that Saint Rosalia banished the plague from Palermo in 1624. Apart from this interesting story, the mountain offers stunning panoramic views of the city.

How to get to Palermo, Sicily?

You’ll be able to start off your yacht charter in Palermo with ease as Palermo International Airport is in the north-west of Sicily – nearby several ports and marinas. Cast off from Palermo, Castellammare del Golfo, Trapani or even Marsala. Low-cost airline, Ryanair, operates weekly flights between Palermo and several other European cities. If travelling from North America, it’s best to first fly via a European hub such as Paris, France.

Top Yacht Rental Palermo Destinations: Lipari Islands

Lipari Islands Yacht Charter  Lipari is easily accessible from the port of Palermo. It is the largest landmass of the Aeolian Islands and the window to this islet group. Lay back on your deck as the Yacht sails through a pastel blue ocean, by a coastline covered with silent, windswept highlands and cliffs. Being a volcanic island, the coastline is pretty indented; thus catamaran can be your ideal option. You can easily space one day touring the city, enjoying at the bars by its coast and collecting souvenirs for people back at home!

Top Palermo Boat Charter Destinations: Alicudi

Alicudi Yacht Charter  A very less visited place among the Aeolian Islands, Alicudi is a small port city with scarce population and a peaceful ambiance. You can sail around the island, anchoring at few places to stroll through this Agrarian civilisation. The place is far from what one finds in modern metropolitans; still dwelling in the archetypal rural culture. That is the speciality of this place. Instead of booking hotels inside the town, you can halt in your yachts, near the coast and enjoy a bright blue sky changing into soft purplish evenings!

Top Palermo Islands Sailing Charter Destinations: Aegadian Islands

Egadi Islands Yacht Charter:  Most guide books quote that the island group consists of three islands: Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo; however, in addition, it contains both small islands of Maraone and Formica. Dating back to prehistoric times, the caves on the islands of Levanzo and Favignana display wall paintings, and the more determined tourist can still venture inside to see examples of both Palaeolithic and Neolithic art. In 241 BC, the islands witnessed the defeat of the Carthaginian fleet from the Romans, led by C. Lutatius Catulus, which put an end to the First Punic War (264 to 241 BC). After the end of Roman supremacy, in the first millennium, the islands succumbed at various times to control under the Saracens, Vandals, Normans and Goths. In the 17th century, the islands belonged to the Genoese family Pallavicini-Rusconi until 1874, when they were offered to Palermo’s Florio family, who helped to create the prolific tuna fishing industry that exists today.

Top Palermo Yacht Week Destinations: Favignana

Favignana Yacht Charter:   The largest of the three main islands, Favignana, with its butterfly shape which locally earned it the title of La Farfalla, is just a 20 minute ferry trip from Trapani. This island which featured in Homer’s Odyssey is genuinely worthy of a day trip and is renowned as being the ideal destination for lovers of white, sandy beaches, including the popular Cala Rossa, frequently remarked upon as the island’s most beautiful bay. The rocky outcrops that rise from crystal clear water supply sunbathers tranquil spots to soak up the sun. Be aware though that the trail down to the beach isn’t really suitable for small children or people with restricted mobility. More accessible is Lido Burrone located on the south coast, heated by the jet stream coming from Tunisia, 80 kilometers away. It has a clean white beach suitable for families, as does Cala Azzurra, which also has an easily accessed bay, with, as its name suggests, a magnificent blue sea. The waters around the island provide excellent swimming opportunities and are popular with scuba-diving fans who come to swim inside the sea caves like the Lovers’ Grotto (Grotta degli Innamorati), the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) and the one that locals say could be heard moaning throughout the winter, the Grotto of Sighs (Grotta dei Sospiri). The main town is dominated by the Arab built fort and watchtower of Santa Caterina and has two major squares, where markets can often be found; however, the once vibrant community market is now often marred by traders selling cheap Chinese imported goods, but the low built houses that surround the piazza are worthy of a photographic opportunity. The influence of the Florio family can be found in Palazzo Florio near the harbour, and the skeleton of the abandoned Florio tuna fishery. If you’re trying to soak up the sun on Favignana, my advice is to travel from high season, as the shores during August in particular can be crowded.

Top Palermo Yacht Charter Destinations: Levanzo

Levanzo Yacht Charter:  Levanzo is the smallest of the three islands and its rocky coastline gives it a more rugged appearance, however what it lacks aesthetically, it makes up for with play, making it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts. Much of the island is formed by hills, with its highest peak being only 278m; the byword for the island is, little. Everything, even the inhabitants, is minimal and concentrated in Cala Dogana, the island’s only village. But as they say, size is not everything. Levanzo has a handful of sandy beaches which are less crowded and is a great retreat for anyone wanting to escape the excesses of modern living; here, you can unwind and enjoy the relaxed pace of life. After a morning sunbathing, why not escape the heat of the day inside the Grotta dei Genovesi, where you can study the early etchings of Prehistoric man; the artworks are a record of early life and depict scenes of farming, fishing and animal husbandry, giving us an insight into the lives of a people long since gone. The island has two shops, two restaurants that sell excellent fish dishes and two resorts, meaning it is not some desolate outpost in the sea; even if, occasionally, there’s nothing better than being at a place where simple pleasures like walking, swimming and taking it easy are all a body requirements.

Explore historical Palermo

Like many Italian cities, Palermo is a city rich in history, architecture and culture. Throughout the centuries there have been many different foreign powers and empires trying to rule over Sicily and Palermo. Palermo was first founded by Phoenicians in 734 BC and taken over by foreign powers such as the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs and the Normans. This is still very visible in the architecture of the city.

Sailing conditions in Palermo

Like many other Mediterranean cities, Palermo is blessed with mostly hot and dry summers, although the weather is generally considered subtropical-Mediterranean. July and August are the warmest months of the year. In August, the water temperatures can average at around 26 degrees, making it perfect for swimming in the sea. Winters are generally mild, but experience quite a bit of rain. The average annual temperatures is 18 degrees, which makes Palermo one of the warmest spots in Europe.

The winds in Palermo are dominated by north-westerly winds that average at a force of 3 to 4. This makes Palermo a fantastic location for novice sailors.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Palermo?

Renting a boat in Palermo is not going to break your bank, in fact, it is one of the most affordable destinations for a boat holiday in Italy. Of course the price of a boat rental in Palermo highly depends on the type of boat you choose, the season you’re sailing in, the amount of people joining you on board and all the amenities included in your charter. You will also be happy to hear that Zizoo offers exclusive discounts on boat rentals in Palermo all year round.

You can rent a gulet in Italy for an average price of 50 EUR per person per day, but keep in mind that they are not easy to operate. You either need to have a lot of experience to navigate a boat like this by yourself or bring someone on board who knows how to do it. Charter a sailboat in Italy for an average price of 58 EUR per person per day. At an average price 40 EUR per person per day, a RIB charter in Italy is extremely affordable. Charter a speedboat in Sicily if you are looking for that adrenaline rush. You can rent them at an average price of 70 EUR per person per day. However, both RIBs and speedboats are not great for longer trips as they don’t provide the necessary facilities and shelter to allow for an overnight stay. If you plan on enjoying a week-long vacation in and around Palermo, you should opt for a catamaran or motorboat charter. They are equipped with all you need and keep you safe at night. Motorboats are the most expensive boats you can charter in Sicily, but there are different price ranges to choose from depending on your budget and your personal preferences. Rent a motorboat in Italy at an average price of 150 EUR per person per day and a catamaran at an average price of 140 EUR per person per day.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Palermo?

If you are keen on exploring the stunning beaches Palermo and the surrounding towns have to offer, you should choose your boat accordingly. A motorboat or catamaran that both have a shallow draft would be perfect for this kind of boat holiday in Sicily. If you want to go on an adventure to explore the Sicilian coast from a distance, experience the wild Mediterranean sea and practice your sailing skills, you should definitely opt for a sailboat.

Rent a sailboat in Palermo

Pros of renting a sailboat in Palermo

A sailboat hire in Palermo is a great choice for anyone who cares about the environment. As sailboats are solely fueled by the wind, you don’t produce extra CO2-emissions and therefore making sailboats one of the most environmentally friendly boats you can choose.

A sailing boat rental in Palermo is great for those travelling on a budget. Sailboats are generally cheaper than other types of boats and you don’t have to worry about paying extra for fuel.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Palermo

One of the downsides of a sailboat charter in Palermo could be the fact that they are so dependent on the wind. You need to come prepared that you might get stuck in the middle of the sea should the wind suddenly stop blowing. All you can do is be patient.

Sailboat charter in Palermo

Rent a catamaran in Palermo

Pros of renting a catamaran in Palermo

Rent a catamaran in Palermo if you’re ready to see all the magical beaches near Palermo. Majestic cliffs, golden sand and magical sunsets await you in the best spots. Catamarans have a shallow draft which makes it safer and easier to sail close to the shore. It also means that you can access the beautiful beaches very easily and enjoy them from up close rather than from a distance.

A catamaran charter in Palermo is also great for anyone who likes the comforts of sailing with an engine, but also the adventure that comes with sailing with a sail. Catamarans are real multitaskers, making them extremely flexible and versatile. You can sail with the winds when they’re strong enough or revert to using the engine when they are not or you simply want to lean back to get from one place to the other.

Another great thing about a catamaran rental in Palermo is the fact that they bring you a level of comfort you might be missing out on on other types of boats. They are often bigger than other types of boats, allowing for extra space in the bedrooms.

You will also be pleased to know that catamarans feel less unstable than other types of boats. Due to the two hulls that a catamaran is standing on, the boat won’t shake as much on the water - even when the wind picks up. This is particularly great for anyone who easily gets seasick.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Palermo

One of the downsides of a catamaran hire in Palermo is the fact that they are lighter than other boats which can really slow them down. So, don’t make any plans to go somewhere in a short period of time.

Another disadvantage of a catamaran charter in Palermo could be the size of a catamaran. It might be super comfortable to have a huge amount of space on board your boat, but it can also come with a couple of challenges. You might not be able to find a spot for mooring at the marinas, because of the size of a catamaran. And even if you do, you will probably have to pay extra.

Catamaran rental in Palermo

Rent a motorboat in Palermo

Pros of renting a motorboat in Palermo

A motorboat rental in Palermo is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to race across the sea and see as much as possible in a short amount of time. Motorboats are generally faster than other types of boats, making them perfect for a tour of the Sicilian coast.

A motorboat hire in Palermo also has the advantage that they have a shallow draft. This makes them perfect for sailing in shallow waters and sailing closer to the shore, allowing you easy access to the most beautiful and remote beaches and bays.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Palermo

One of the downsides of a motorboat charter in Palermo is the fact that they only run on fuel. This makes them one of the most expensive types of boats you can rent here. You might even have to pay extra for fuel in addition to your bareboat charter. So don’t be surprised by a huge bill at the end of your trip.

This is an important airport for the island - both for commerce and its tourist trade. As such it has flights from mainland Italy and much of Europe throughout the week, and charter flights coming in during the summer months.

Take a bus or taxi into the city, there are plenty running at all times.

Screen Rant

10 below deck charter guests who will never return to the franchise.

While the charter guests who appear on Below Deck have a great time while filming the show, many aren't invited back for a number of reasons.

  • Some charter guests on Below Deck have caused unnecessary drama and won't likely return due to bad behavior.
  • Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht faced backlash from Barrie, who called him two-faced.
  • Former guest Dr. Francis Martinis will not return to Below Deck after he was arrested for faking prescriptions.

The Below Deck franchise has featured many charter guests since 2013, many of whom will never return . The Bravo series focuses on expensive charters with wealthy guests who have attitude problems and over-the-top demands. That includes Charter guest Alexis Bellino, who boarded Captain Lee Rosbach’s yacht with her boyfriend at the time, Andy Bohn. She was disrespectful and made everyone uncomfortable with her and Andy's PDA. She even insulted crew members after featuring on the show.

Like Alexis, Delores Flora from Below Deck season 8 was a terrible guest. Not only did she misbehave, but she also got drunk and s wam while intoxicated, which is not only not allowed, it frightened the crew members. Delores got kicked out of the yacht the next day. These guests created unnecessary drama on the boat and will likely never return like a few others from the franchise.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

8 barrie & tony, below deck sailing yacht.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow had a decent time in the Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 2 and 3. Despite that, they left with a bitter taste because of Captain Glenn Shephard. In 2021, Barrie participated in a podcast, Pita Party: The Podcast , where he claimed that Captain Glenn bothered him while using his phone .

Barrie said, “he (Captain Glenn) was a two-face b*stard,” adding that he just didn’t like his presence.

7 Frank Fay

Below deck mediterranean.

In Below Deck Mediterranean season 7, Charter guest Frank Fay had a thing for second stew Kyle Viljoen. He pursued him on the yacht, but unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Frank will likely never return to the series as long as Captain Sandy Yawn allows Kyle to work for her. Even if Kyle quits, Frank wouldn’t want to be in an environment that would remind him of his failed relationship.

6 Erica Rose

Erica Rose appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht two seasons in a row. Erica was highly offensive toward the crew member, as well as her husband, Charles Sanders, and to make things worse, she left the crew with a measly tip , leading fans to slam her on social media. Ultimately, Erica had to apologize for her bad attitude but never returned to give the crew the tip they deserved. Nobody on Below Deck Sailing Yacht would ever want to return.

5 Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was not dramatic at all; however, he’ll probably never return to the series. Justin wouldn’t return because he wasn't the primary guest. He joined his friend, Kim, who wanted to enjoy a luxury yacht trip. It was more of a one-and-done deal. Secondly, nobody recognized him at all. Viewers later realized who he was and how he was the runner-up on American Idol season 1. Justin is a theatre artist and has made a name for himself. However, it was embarrassing that so many fans had no clue who he was .

Below Deck: 8 Charter Guests With The Worst Attitudes

4 johnny damon.

Johnny Damon’s time at Below Deck Med was full of explosive moments. Once, he sent the food back, citing that the experience wasn’t “five stars.” On another occasion, his wife, Michelle, created drama by yelling at the owner of another yacht . Overall, the experience was simply terrible on both sides. Crew members didn’t love Johnny and his wife, and the couple didn’t respect the crew members. It is unlikely that Captain Sandy would want to host the couple again as long as she’s in charge.

3 Krystal Murphy

Former charter guest Krystal Murphy boarded Captain Lee’s yacht with her friends. She immediately began showing red flags, drinking, and just being a menace. Krystal fought with her friend, Chelsea, creating unnecessary drama. She even passed out and punched a friend in the face. Former Chief Stew Kate Chastain disliked serving Krystal and called her a “spoiled brat;” she wanted to throw her off the yacht. Nowadays, Krystal has seemingly become a more private person. It doesn’t seem like Krystal would want to be on TV again.

2 Steve Bradley

Below Deck fans should remember Steve Bradley as he made many appearances on the show. In Below Deck season 3, he wanted a foam party and demanded the crew to figure it out and follow his commands, acting like a king. In Below Deck season 6, Steve made more outrageous requests. Apart from being a wild guest, Steve was entitled and acted inappropriately at times . No Below Deck captain would want to host him again as he didn't come off as very likable.

1 Dr. Francis Martinis

Below deck mediterranean & below deck sailing yacht.

Dr. Francis Martinis from Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht has a zero chance of returning. While the former charter guest didn’t have too many issues on the show, his personal life issues will stop him from appearing on Bravo again. According to TMZ , Dr. Francis and his wife, Jessica, were arrested for filling out fake prescriptions in December 2023 . The couple used the names of Below Deck stars and got caught red-handed. The Below Deck franchise would never want to welcome felons, especially when their mugshots are all over the internet.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Sources: Pita Party: The Podcast , Krystal Murphy /Instagram

Below Deck is a popular reality TV franchise that focuses on a group of crew members as they work on luxurious yachts and cater to their client's needs. After the original series proved to be a success, Bravo developed a handful of spinoff shows including Below Deck Selling Yacht, Below Deck Adventure, Below Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Mediterranean.

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Kokomo,’ the Lightning-Fast 192-Foot Sailing Superyacht

The 192-footer has a 242-foot-high mast and spinnaker half the size of a football field. but it's so automated it can be sailed by two people., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Sailing Superyacht Kokomo

The 192-foot Kokomo was the second largest sloop in the world when it launched from New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts shipyard in 2010. It remains the largest fast-cruising sloop available for charter. The yacht’s commissioning owner Lang Walker (who died in January 2024) was a seasoned sailor who gave all three of his yachts the same name.

The first was a 131-foot sloop, which Walker replaced five years later with a 171-footer. The same day he took delivery of his 171-foot sloop, he placed an order for the third and final 192-foot Kokomo, which he planned to use for racing and cruising around the world. He also kept the same design team for all three yachts, with exterior and naval architecture by Ed Dubois and interior by UK’s RWD.

The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’ , which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo .

Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.

You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boom

charter sailing yacht palermo

When Kokomo was launched, she was the second-largest sloop in the world and carried the largest set of sails made by Doyle Sails in New Zealand. The 23,971-square-foot asymmetric spinnaker is half the size of a professional football field, while the 9,688-square-foot mainsail needs a crane to lift it. Because of the gargantuan size of the sails, the designers entered a new era of spar and winch design, having to “reinvent” the deck equipment—winches, mast, boom, rigging and sails—to cope with the 31.6-ton load on the genoa sheet and 32-ton load on the main sheet clew. The 244-foot carbon mast is the largest ever made by Southern Spars.

A Hidden Lifting Keel

charter sailing yacht palermo

The yacht’s 130-ton lifting keel is one of its most impressive features, though it’s largely left to the imagination. The interior layout is carefully designed so that the keel structure remains hidden. Dubois Naval Architects positioned the keel box to come above the main deck, serving as a partial separation between the bridge and the main salon (see inset). Kokomo was only the second yacht to be fitted with a lifting a keel, the first being 246-foot M5 (ex-Mirabella V), the world’s largest single-masted sailing yacht. This innovative design shortens Kokomo’s 28.5-foot draft when the keel is fully extended, to just 15 feet for shallow waters.

Fast-Track Sailing

charter sailing yacht palermo

Kokomo was one of the first yachts to be fitted with a hydraulic batt-car system for furling the mainsail, which has cars at each batten end that slot in an outer track on the mast. This alleviates a once-common issue where the luff tape or bolt rope on large sailing yachts became chaffed by the compression of the battens, which often caused the in-boom furling mainsails to fail. “When sailing Kokomo , especially when racing, I am completely impressed with the speed and efficiency of the hydraulic system,” says Kokomo ’s captain, Jeremy ‘Bear’ Wynne, who notes the yacht’s recorded top speed is a very impressive 22 knots. “The jib furlers are some of the fastest I have seen. There is absolutely no shortage of hydraulic power, even with multiple winches running on a jibe—a rarity on a big sailing yacht.”

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

charter sailing yacht palermo

Kokomo might be big on technology, but never at the expense of design. The wheelhouse has fold-down computer screens that conceal the navigation equipment when not in use, converting to beautiful carbon counter tops. This design sleight of hand transforms a highly technical area into a tony lounge. It’s a theme that extends to the foredeck, where the yacht’s two tenders are concealed in dedicated lockers. There’s also a fully retractable tender crane that launches the tenders from either side of the boat but disappears out of sight when guests are using the Jacuzzi. “The designated deck lockers were an advanced feature at the time of her launch,” says Wynne, adding that another bonus is that diesel tanks are fully available. “The tenders can be fueled onboard before launching.”

It Takes Just A Few Good Sailors

charter sailing yacht palermo

Kokomo can accommodate up to 10 crew in total, but theoretically it only takes two to sail—a helm person and a sail trimmer. That sounds almost impossible given the size and complexity of yacht. But all sails are controlled by joystick on the flybridge. And when the boat is in full-on racing mode, there are control stations on both sides, providing visibility of the sails. Thanks to the hydraulics system, the mainsail can be hoisted and lowered on a wireless remote control. Of course, maneuvers like stowing the massive genoa can never be automated. That’s a job for a half-dozen good sailors.

Art On Board

charter sailing yacht palermo

The hallway that leads to the owner’s cabin is lined with a mosaic tapestry made from sea glass woven together with wire. Backlit to create an unusual effect, it’s just one of the eclectic works of art that decorates the interior. The main salon also has a stunning and colorful work of glass art as another example.

Interior Matters

charter sailing yacht palermo

Kokomo is not all tech features. The yacht’s modern interiors combine dark wood floors and calming cream furnishings start in the main salon and continue across the five guest cabins. Penned by British studio Redman Whiteley Dixon, the design carefully wraps around the lifting keel without sacrificing or impeding on any interior guest space. The yacht accommodates up to 10 guests in a master suite, VIP, one double cabin and two twins. There are other accommodations for up to 10 crew. On the foredeck, the Jacuzzi brings another element of outdoor entertainment, bolstered by a sunken cockpit.

World Traveler

charter sailing yacht palermo

The mandate issued by Walker was to create a yacht that was a “quantum leap forward” from his previous yachts, with superior sailing characteristics and guest comfort. The mast’s height is too tall to sail through the Panama or Suez Canals, which meant it would have to be designed to sail around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The maiden voyage took the yacht from the New Zealand shipyard to Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. It also spent time at Walker’s private island (pictured above), also named Kokomo. The vessel has since spent many years exploring the Caribbean and Med. It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.
