TRIMARAN TECHNOLOGY CONTINUING TO IMPROVE THE MARITIME EXPERIENCE FOR HIGH SPEED PASSENGER FERRIES

austal trimaran

MEDIA RELEASE 5 AUGUST 2019

Leading international shipbuilder Austal’s (ASX: ASB) iconic trimaran vessel design is gaining increasing customer demand approaching the 15th anniversary of the first vessel entering operations.

Austal’s trimaran was specifically developed to offer passengers and operators a high speed vessel platform that delivers superior sea keeping and vessel stability when operated on routes with challenging sea conditions.

In collaboration with Fred. Olsen, S.A., Austal’s research and development team combined with its expert shipbuilders to manufacture and deliver the 127m Benchijigua Express in 2005. From the day it commenced service, the vessel has continued to demonstrate the hull form, size and capacity of the vessel as the superior maritime solution for travel in the Canary Islands.

The next generation Austal trimarans currently under construction have incorporated design refinements and new technology to further increase the superiority of the trimaran platform. The trimaran’s ability to adjust ride and roll characteristics exceeds that of catamarans and monohulls, dramatically improving the vessel’s stability and therefore customer experience.

“Austal’s trimaran design has continually proven its superiority in managing challenging sea keeping conditions in both commercial and military applications. Even at the most basic level, the reduction in instances of sea sickness from this design is a key feature that continues to drive demand for the platform,” Austal CEO David Singleton said.

“With 13 Austal trimarans in operation globally, and nine under construction for commercial and military customers, these unique and highly sophisticated vessels continue to attract attention for their performance and success. At present we are receiving increasing demand for the trimaran vessel design over the catamaran due to the passenger comfort and experience the hull design provides.”

This next generation of trimarans currently under construction may not be considered as a prototype any longer, given the evolution of lessons learnt after 15 years of operations by Fred. Olsen, S.A. of her successful flag vessel “Benchijigua Express”, and the evolution during more than 15 years of technological improvements on the design of commercial and military trimarans by Austal.

“Fred. Olsen is confident of introducing a superior maritime experience from 2020 for all Fred. Olsen Express customers, who have trusted our services for more than 45 years,” Fred. Olsen, S.A. CEO Andrés Marín said.

NEW AUSTAL TRIMARAN PROVIDES VISION OF THE FUTURE FOR FERRY TRANSPORTATION IN JAPAN

austal trimaran

MEDIA RELEASE

27 FEBRUARY 2020

Austal has celebrated the company’s latest development in high-speed trimaran technology with the revealing of an 83 metre trimaran ferry, under construction for JR Kyushu Jet Ferry of Japan, at the company’s Henderson South shipyard in Western Australia.

Austal Hull 396, to be known as Queen Beetle, was designed and constructed by Austal Australia and is due for launch in mid-March 2020. The vessel will be handed over to JR Kyushu Jet Ferry in June 2020 and will commence services between Busan, South Korea and Fukuoka, Japan in July 2020.

Speaking at the reveal ceremony, which was attended by more than 100 guests, including Governor of Western Australia The Hon Kim Beazley AC and West Australian Premier The Hon Mark McGowan MLA, Austal Chief Executive David Singleton said the company was proud to be introducing the new trimaran to Japan while offering outstanding value to a new customer, JR Kyushu Jet Ferry.

“We’re very proud to be introducing this new Austal trimaran to one of the most technologically advanced and mature markets in the world. In fact, Queen Beetle will be the first high-speed trimaran ferry to be delivered to and operate in Japan.

“This stunning new ship will truly transform the fast-ferry journey between Japan and South Korea, offering significantly improved seakeeping and an exceptional on-board experience for passengers and crew.

“With a capacity to carry 502 passengers in greater comfort, with previously unavailable amenities such as a shop and café, this new trimaran represents outstanding value to our customer, JR Kyushu Jet Ferry,” he said.

Since 2005, Austal has delivered 14 high-speed aluminium trimarans worldwide, including 11 for the United States Navy. Austal has a further 11 trimarans under construction or scheduled for construction at the company’s shipyards around the world - and remains the only shipbuilder designing, constructing and sustaining large high speed trimaran ferries, globally.

More than 200 West Australians were employed in the design and construction of the vessel, spending a combined 450,000 hours to get the vessel to the current point in its construction program.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said it was particularly pleasing that a range of local suppliers and subcontractors had also contributed to the construction of the vessel, in addition to those directly employed by Austal.

“The extent of the local content in this vessel is proof of both a vibrant shipbuilding industry in Western Australia as well a testament to the quality of the work and products that Western Australian companies can contribute to the maritime sector, whether in civil or defence areas,” Mr McGowan said.

JR Kyushu Railway Company President Mr Toshihiko Aoyagi, and JR Kyushu Jet Ferry President Mr Masayuki Mizuno, who both travelled from Japan to attend the ceremony, congratulated the Austal project team on the progress of the vessel and remarked on the growing anticipation for the new ship in Japan.

“JR Kyushu Jet Ferry is very excited about the imminent launch, completion and delivery of the Queen Beetle trimaran and we look forward to commencing services in Japan, in July. The reveal ceremony has assured us the Queen Beetle will be the most impressive ship in our fleet,” Mr Aoyagi said.

The distinctively red-painted Queen Beetle will be able to transport 502 passengers (and 20 crew) across 2 passenger decks, at speeds up to 37 knots on the 115 nautical mile route.

Featuring a customised interior designed by Eiji Mitooka of Don Design Associates, the Queen Beetle includes two classes of seating plus compartments for groups and families, a children’s play area and nursing room, a café and bar, duty-free shop, lockers for luggage and all-access spaces for wheelchairs and prams. An outdoor viewing deck will further enhance the on-board experience for passengers.

More information on the Queen Beetle is available from the Austal website - https://www.austal.com/ships/passenger-express-83-queen-beetle

Videos of the reveal ceremony, the vessel rollout and superstructure lift and a 3D animation are available on Austal’s YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/AustalMedia .

The 700t ferry has a waterline length of 101.4m, a moulded beam of 26.8m, a moulded hull depth of 7.6m and a hull draft of 4.2m. It can cruise at a maximum speed of 39kt, at a range of 630 nautical miles.

The trimaran platform is developed by using patented trimaran technology to improve performance, sea-keeping capability, fuel efficiency, payload capacity and passenger comfort. The vessel provides less transverse and vertical accelerations in comparison with other catamarans and mono-hull vessels due to its long and trim main hull. The design also incorporates an additional aft which causes minor vertical motions.

The trimaran is fitted with outfits and interiors suitable for cruise operations or international voyages. The vessel utilises less power compared with similar high-speed ferries operating at related speeds.

It is suitable for all weather conditions, delivers high speeds in waves and operates in higher wave heights. It is also fitted with three underwater wings at the apexes which provide control over the motion of the vessel. Roll accelerations and motion sickness are reduced due to its lower metacentric height. The waves created behind the vessel are also significantly reduced to cut down the impact on the environment.

Accommodation

The ferry can accommodate up to 1,165 passengers. The seating layout can be customised according to the operator’s requirements. The ferry offers a variety of onboard passenger facilities including two bar venues, a food preparation and service counter and a boutique gift shop.

Amenities include wheelchair-accessible toilets, a high-speed elevator and four independent passenger entry points.

The mezzanine deck is a combination of fixed and hoistable decks which allow the carriage up to 132 cars with a clear deck height of 2m. The clear height on the main deck is under 4.3m and 2.3m when it is lifted and lowered. The vehicle deck has space to accommodate 245 cars or 145 cars. The stern is reinforced to allow the fitting of a stern ramp for future requirements.

The trimaran ferry is equipped with three MTU 20V 8000 series diesel engines which deliver 9,100kW each with 1,200rpm. The three class-leading engines provide the highest power-to-weight ratio in their power range. The propulsion system consists of three Wartsila LJX 1300 waterjets.

The patented three-engine configuration, combined with the hydrodynamic hull form, improves fuel efficiency across a variety of operating environments. It also saves weight compared with conventional four-engine layout. The trimaran ferry is classified as Germanischer Lloyd 100 A5, HSC – B OC3 High Speed Passenger / Ro-Ro Type, MC, AUT.

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.
