Nordhavn Yachts for Sale

Originally a small yacht brokerage and import company headquartered in Dana Point, California back in 1974, today, the shipyard is a luxury yacht builder specialising in oceangoing passage-makers.

The original brokerage company, Pan Asian Enterprises (PAE), was founded by Jim Leishman, Dan Street and Joe Meglen and embraced the importation of CT boats from Taiwan. In 1976, PAE began importing another line of boats from Taiwan called the Transpac 49. Over an eight-year period, the company imported, sold and delivered 35 Transpacs.

When the time was right to develop their own models, PAE began with sailing yachts in the late 1970s, forming a relationship with new Taiwanese shipyard Ta Shing Yacht Building.

In 1988, as the sailing yacht market was declining, PAE embarked on a 46-foot (14m) motor yacht project designed by Jeff Leishman, Jim’s brother. Because its style and look was reminiscent of North Sea fishing trawlers, the name Nordhavn (Norwegian for North Harbor) was chosen for this new design. Nordhavn is the ongoing trading name of Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc.

The shipyard overall has a global team of around 90 employees and currently offers 17 designs from 39 to 120 foot (12 to 36.5m). Nordhavn is also known for its loyal customers and regular rendezvous for owners.

History of Nordhavn Yachts

The origins of Nordhavn date back to 1974, and a small yacht brokerage and import company headquartered in Dana Point, California. The shipyard grew out of a brokerage company founded by Jim Leishman, Dan Street and Joe Meglen. The business originally comprised of a general yacht brokerage and the importation of CT boats from Taiwan. The brokerage and import company was known as Pan Asian Enterprises (PAE) and, in 1976, PAE added another line of boats called the Transpac 49. These were also imported from Taiwan and, between 1976 and 1984, the company imported, sold and delivered 35 of these.

In 2018, Nordhavn announced it would be collaborating with the renowned Dutch design firm Vripack on the creation of fresh, modern interiors for its Nordhavn 80 model to serve the diverse styles and tastes of contemporary buyers.

In 2020 the shipyard announced it is building their largest yacht yet, this being a new 148-foot (45m) project. The Nordhavn 148 expedition superyacht, known as N148 will be able to take on the most extreme cruising itinerary, and is the latest collaboration between Nordhavn and Vripack.

Today, Nordhavn’s specialism is in oceangoing passage-makers that can cross any ocean in safety, luxury and comfort.

The Nordhavn Collection

The expedition yacht builder has delivered more than 850 yachts to over 500 owners, most of whom are owner/operators of their vessels. These full displacement, trawler-style motor yachts are built of fiberglass composite to the shipyard’s highest standards.

In 1988, PAE embarked on a 46-foot (14m) motor yacht project designed by Jeff Leishman, Jim’s brother. Hull Number 1 of the Nordhavn 46 was completed and shipped in early 1989. In terms of other notable builds, Nordhavn’s production series includes many innovative models, such as a 56-foot Motorsailer and the 75 Exploration Yacht Fisher, as well as the European-styled Nordhavn 78.

On the superyacht side, Nordhavn’s flagship is a Nordhavn 120. The 120-foot AURORA (36.75m), was launched in 2014 and was the recipient of several awards recognizing her comfort, stability and range. The Nordhavn 120 AURORA was designed by Jeff Leishman with naval architecture by Nordhavn, and the interior design was created by Destry Darr Designs. AURORA can accommodate up to 10 people with a complement of seven crew.

Whilst the smallest model in the collection is N41 (12.6m), the newest project, the N148 (45m) will be groundbreaking for the shipyard. The first metal yacht in the history of the Nordhavn product line, this new design pushes the brand to go beyond prior engineering feats. Key to the design are Vripack’s reinterpretation of particular features, including a flared, rounded bow, the yard’s interesting combination of square and round windows, and an industrial chic aesthetic. The interior volume of the N148 will be approximately 25% larger than the fleet’s current queenship, the Nordhavn 120. This model has been hailed as the ultimate crossover yacht: a mix of commercial ship and elegant superyacht.

The profile of the Pershing 140 displays the sleek lines that symbolize the brand's sporting, competitive spirit, enhanced by such iconic details as the two side wings integrated into the superstructure at the beginning of the walkways. The distinctly contemporary shape of the bow enhances the model's aerodynamics, guaranteed by the mooring cover with an automatic up/down mechanism that maintains the streamlined design.

Pershing 140 comes with four MTU 16 V 2000 M96L 2600 HP engines. The hydro-jet propulsion assures excellent performance levels, both at cruising and maximum speed. Consistent with the Pershing DNA, the domotics and electronic systems are all state-of-the-art and coniugate performance with well-being and relaxation. Three Seakeeper 35s guarantee absolute comfort even while at anchor.

The three large decks and spacious outdoor areas make living on board the Pershing 140 extremely comfortable. The revolutionary stern area architecture is designed to enhance onboard entertainment and is exhalted by the large beach club right at the water’s edge. To offer a personalised and unique thrill, all on-board decorations are tailored to reflect the owner’s style.

Her top speed is 22.0 kn, her cruising speed is 20.0 kn, and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 1574.0 nm at 10.0 kn, with power coming from a Volvo Penta diesel engine. She can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms, with 5 crew members waiting on their every need. She has a gross tonnage of 180.0 GT and a 8.0 m beam.

She was designed by Zuccon International Project , who has designed 667 other superyachts in the BOAT Pro database.

The naval architecture was developed by Sanlorenzo , who has architected 612 other superyachts in the BOAT Pro database, and the interior of the yacht was designed by Lissoni Associati , who has 82 other superyacht interiors designed in the BOAT Pro database - she is built with a Teak deck, a GRP hull, and GRP superstructure.

Exclusive: 140m Lurssen superyacht 'Project Lightning' delivered and named SCHEHERAZADE

Still officially known as 'Project Lightning' the 140m (459ft) motor yacht SCHEHERAZADE  has been delivered and is currently undertaking her maiden voyage to Norway . 

First hitting the water in 2019, Project Lightning has now been delivered as  SCHEHERAZADE .

According to AIS tracking data, she left Lurssen's facilities in Bremen yesterday and is currently en route to Kristiansand, on Norway's southern coast. It comes after the 10,167 GT motor yacht  underwent her first round of sea trials in August 2019. 

Lurssen has kept all details about their fifth-largest superyacht delivery under wraps. It is being reported that the yacht's exterior styling comes from Espen Oeino, but this has not been confirmed by the yard.

Key design features of the six-deck superyacht include a pair of helipads- one on the foredeck and one on the aft deck. She also has impressive underwater lightning and high-volume interiors that allow for plenty of indoor spaces for relaxation and entertainment. 

Lurssen is on track for a busy 2020, with other deliveries including the 142m (466ft) motor yacht OPUS (or 'Project Redwood') scheduled for later this year. The yard also recently sent 87m superyacht 'Project Hawaii'  out on sea trials, signalling promising activity and good progress for Northern European shipyards amid the Coronavirus crisis.

The name Scheherazade comes from an Arabic term meaning "world-freer". In literature, Scheherazade is a legendary Arabic queen immortalized as the narrator of all one thousand stories in the 'One Thousand and One Nights'.

At 10,167 GT Scheherazade is believed to be the 6th largest Lurssen superyacht ever delivered. The largest Lurssen-built superyacht in terms of GT is 156m megayacht Dilbar with a GT of 15,917. At 139.29, Al Salamah has a larger volume of 12,234 GT.

It is not yet known whether M/Y SCHEHERAZADE will become available for superyacht charters .

The R14m is designed for long distance cruising with an easily driven hull of moderate beam and displacement,long waterline and veed sections which ensures very good sailing performance and directional stablility.

Kit Assembly

The R14m was the first of the full aluminium kit yachts which followed on from the R1000 Series steel cruising yachts and a number of custom aluminium and steel yachts which were built using the same design and construction techniques. The Aluminium Kit Construction section describes the characteristics of the R14m hull, general design considerations, plus assembly, typical plates and components and materials list.

The first 14m kit was cut by Northwest Plasma Cutting in Seattle, WA, USA. Northwind Marine in Seattle, WA, USA built the hull and deck to lockup stage before shipping to Canada for the interior fitout. On completion, the yacht was delivered to the owner in Juneau, Alaska. Northwest has also cut 2 14m kits for Canadian clients.

On the R14m, complete aluminium structure of the hull and deck was 3D computer modelled, then broken down into individual components and nested onto standard size plates ready for plasma cutting using NC files. The components cut includes all the frames, floors, keel floors, watertight bulkheads, keel plating, rudder and skeg, transom, deck, house and cockpit plating, hatch coamings, internal window frames, bow fitting, backbone and stem, keel base, bulwark - everything except the hull plating. All the notches for hull stringers and longitudinals were cut into the frames and floors for easy assembly.

The aim of this design was to produce a capable cruising yacht with twin cabins, large galley and a saloon where you can sit down and still see out the windows. An inside steering position is located at the forward end of the starboard saloon settee. Considerable stowage space is available outboard of the settees under the side decks. The chart table is located at the aft end of the pilot house just inside the companionway. Aft of the chart table is a quarter berth - or more stowage lockers if required. The window option shows deck hatches in either side of the pilot house for extra ventilation. There are opening ports in the forward house plus an array of hatches in the house tops. Deck Layout

The pilot house extends over the forward end ofthe 2m long cockpit to give excellent weather protection for the companionway and cockpit seats. It is possible to see over the pilot house when standing at the wheel or seated on the aft coaming -which incorporates a liferaft locker.

For those seeking greater sun protection, it is possible to have a part or fully covered cockpit and still sail. There is plenty of stowage space with coaming and cockpit lockers, gas bottle locker in the side deck and a large lazarette. The lazarette is accessed by two deck hatches and is divided from the accommodation by a watertight bulkhead. Transom step leads to the boarding platform. The deck edge has a bulwark - 100 to 200mm high - instead of an aluminium toerail. Forward, a collision bulkhead separates the anchor locker and self-draining chain locker from the forward cabin. The anchor winch is aft of the collision bulkheads to protect the electrics. The anchor can be left stowed on the bow rollers during shorter trips, or in the anchor locker.

The keel stepped fractional rig has double swept back spreaders, chainplates at the deck edge for extra support, a furling jib and in-boom furling main. There are no overlapping working sails and optional runners for easy handling. Use the navigation aids at the top of the page to view the sail plan of the R14m.

Based on the loading requirements of liquids, stores and extra equipment for a cruising yacht of 40 - 48ft (which can be from 2,600 to 3,000kg) the following information shows the range of loading and changes in waterlines.

The hull structure is designed to the A.B.S. Guide for Offshore Racing Yachts which was regularly used for defining structures which have been approved for passenger charter. The hull frame &floor spacings vary depending on local loadings and the accommodation layout. Intermediate floors and longitudinals are installed inway of the keel, engine and mast step. The maximum hull speed of the R14m, at Speed / Length Ratio (S/L) = 1.34, is 8.83 knots. An efficient cruising speed is at S/L = 1.1, or 7.24 knots. The list shows the required shaft horsepower (SHP) for different speeds at 12,872kg (28,380lb) displacement. Note the rapid increase in required SHP (hence fuel consumption) for small gains in speed.

Based on a speed requirement, select an engine which - running at an optimum RPM - will give the required SHP for that speed.
