Please note that Mini Cat type of boats are not designed to be sport racers. Mini Cats are designed to be inexpensive budget solution watercraft that can go nice and easy with small gas outboard or affordable electric trolling motors. However, care has to be taken when going fast against the strong winds, as it may flip boat over if operated improperly with wrong weight distribution. As with any other watercrafts, always wear life jacket and use outboard lanyard kill switch when going fast.

Each tube has 2 separate air chambers for better marine safety. Air pressure release valves are built into each tube to prevent over inflation or excess pressure build up due to hot air. Extra wide durable rub strake on bottom of tubes allow beaching even on a rocky line.

Hippokampos

Saturn 12 foot inflatable mini cat mc365 review.

When it came to purchasing a dinghy, we went well outside the box. After our friend, Fred Facker, asked if we had ever used an inflatable catamaran dinghy, we felt compelled to look into them. We don’t have space on deck for a RIB, so we wanted a fully inflatable dinghy we can stow in the V-berth for passages. At under $1,000 new, we decided to give the Saturn Inflatable Mini Catamaran dinghy a try.

We decided to purchase the 9 foot, 6 inch version for Hippokampos. When we contacted Boats To Go to make the purchase, they were out of stock on that model, but offered the 12 foot version for the same price. We looked at the 12 foot version and saw some advantages (like the 20 inch diameter tubes) and took the bait. See the boat here: http://www.boatstogo.com/inflatable-catamaran-MC365.asp . Note that the 9 foot 6 inch version we originally considered is not the same as the Nano Cat they now offer. The original version was wider than the current Nano Cat.

Now that we’ve had it for about a year, and used it extensively in a cruising setting, we felt it was time to review the dinghy.

Our initial observation; it is big! Jayne’s first comment was that we had room for a goat. The size probably helps get on a plane, and we can plane with both of us with a 6 HP, 4 stroke Tohatsu. GPS clocks us around 12 knots on a plane. It does not plane with 3 adults on board, but still makes way nicely. It is rated for a 9.9 HP engine and we might take that option if we had 3 regularly. We like the 6 HP though because it is relatively light and the single cylinder is easy on gas.

The seats shipped to us by Boats To Go were way too narrow and did not fit. They had me ship them back at my expense, but included seat cushions with storage bags with the new seats at no additional charge. The new seats are actually slightly too wide, but close enough that we have not yet modified them.

Early on we noticed the webbing straps for the handles were not UV resistant. A year later only one handle remains. The nylon ropes on either side have held up despite my expectations and we use those to hold on or to drag the boat up or down the beach. It is also possible to glue on replacement handles such as the one given to us by Bruce on La Vidorra.

Shortly after we used the manual pump to inflate the tubes and floor to the proper pressure, we decided to spring for the high pressure electric inflator with automatic cutoff. We can recharge the pump with 120 volt or 12 volt power. It not only made it easier to inflate, it is much quicker for us to inflate the dinghy and get it in the water to clear in to new countries. We also use the electric pump on the SUP. It was expensive, but worth it.

The boat has been great in its role as tender. With the rise on the bow and light weight, it is very easy to beach and deploy from the beach. The front of the boat becomes a “walk off” design when beaching. We have a light Danforth to make sure it does not wander off with an incoming tide. It is roomy enough that we have never had a problem taking stuff to or from shore. When snorkeling, boarding over the bow dips the boat to water level with no need to find a way over the tubes, which we’ve found much easier.

Other than the handle straps, the boat has been more robust than I expected for the price. While in Grenada, we found ourselves adding pressure to the floor much too often. We removed the floor, took it in the water, and found a small hole. I suspect it came from the anchor before we started carrying it in a plastic bin. Since we are waiting on a two day stint where we will not be using the boat to make the repair, we must consider it more of an inconvenience than something more serious.

While in the BVIs we towed the dinghy between islands, otherwise we deflate it and store it aboard. We decided to tow it the short distance from Grenada to Carriacou. We were hit by a squall with 35 knot winds on the way. The combination of high winds and light weight flipped the dinghy in tow. We found the catamaran design to be stable while inverted and it took great effort to right it. We had removed the fuel tank before departing Grenada; unfortunately we had not removed the engine. The engine was fully disassembled and cleaned in Carriacou and is now working fine. We towed the dinghy again from Carriacou to Bequia, a distance of 35 nautical miles. We removed both fuel and engine for the trip and did not experience any problems, even with winds touching 20 knots at times.

The 12 foot version is wide as well as long. It does not really fit on the davits, so we leave it in the water more than I would like. From a security stand point, I think this is balanced by the dinghy being so distinctive. Everyone recognizes it, which would not work well for thieves. Nonetheless, we do lock the dinghy. The wide bow does present a challenge to approaching a crowded dinghy dock.

We believe the utility for the price has been good. If we had the choice, we would do it again, but with the smaller version we originally chose. That said, it is worth the note that we have never used the smaller version, so it is possible that some of the features we like in the 12 foot version do not carry over to the little sister. Also, the 9 foot 6 inch Nano Cat they now carry is more narrow than the original boat we considered and I do not know if the boat we wanted is even manufactured anymore, but you can see it here: http://www.boatstogo.com/inflatable-catamaran-mc290.asp.

Types of Saturn Rafts

To give you a better picture, we’ve differentiated the different rafts they offer. Hopefully, this guide helps you choose a more appropriate raft for your needs.

Dinghies and Inflatable Boats

Dinghies are you small rafts that, when equipped sufficiently, can be used as sports boats. Its narrow construction prioritizes optimizing speed, and they usually have dedicated slots on its rear for a motor attachment.

Its lightweight frame makes rafts of this type highly portable, making it possible for solo travelers to use it. Oar storages are usually found on its tubes to keep them secured. Having a concrete floor also makes storing gear and distributing weight for optimal balance and stability relatively more straightforward.

Catamarans and Catarafts

These two types of Saturn rafts have two hulls connected by either a close inflatable floor or a steel frame. Their high connectors reduce drag that optimizes speed and lets you glide smoothly on the water.

Usually, these types of boats have fins on their tubes to improve their maneuverability. The massive tubes on these rafts reduce the need for drain valves and make them positively buoyant.

Whitewater Rafts

As the name suggests, this type of raft lets you traverse varying whitewater classes with reduced risk for injury. These rafts usually have protective covers starting from their sidewalls to the bottom’s surface to keep it from getting torn from hitting rocks.

Its massive tubes create a wider gap between you and boulders, ensuring your safety upon impact. More often than not, their decks are self-bailing so that water does not stay on the raft and help keep you afloat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: aren’t inflatable floors more dangerous that hardwood floors.

A: The high-pressure upon inflation makes inflatable floors as sturdy as hardwood floors. Multiple layers of PVC makes this type of deck resistant to abrasions and weatherproof, ensuring its durability. It also allows for easier assembly and storage, for it ends up with a compact shape once deflated. Hardwood floors, on the other hand, pose a struggle during assembly and could cause damage if incorrectly attached. You need to have more space for storing rafts with these floors since they do not fold up.

Q: Can I repair my boat in the middle of the water?

A: Saturn’s inflatable rafts all have multiple air chambers that ensure your safety if one segment gets punctured. You may not be as balanced compared to when all sections are working, but you will have enough buoyancy to attempt a temporary fix. Purchasing their inflatable rafts usually includes repair kits with all the necessary tools to let you get back to your adventure. If you opted out of getting these kits, duct or gorilla tape usually does the trick as long as the puncture does not reach below the waterline.

Q: How do I pick the appropriate Saturn Raft for me?

A: Determining the location, purpose, and the number of people included will ultimately allow you to determine the right kind of raft for you. Inflatable rafts cater to a specific set of needs, so learning how different factors affect its performance tells you its ability to adapt. Looking at a raft’s spec sheet will tell you if it is a good fit or otherwise, but if you need more help, Saturn has hotline assistance available at your disposal.

Considering buying the new 2021 version of the Saturn MC365 Catamaran. ( https://www.saturnboats.com/saturn-catamaran/12-saturn-catamaran-en.html ). I have had some pool toy type blow up boats but this is the first somewhat real inflatable. I am looking for any suggestions about this boat, and what motor to power it with. Specs say max is 9.9. Thanks

Welcome to Iboats, With how many souls on board do you plan going boating with and which motor brand will be powering it ? Strange that a 12 footer will only hold just a 9.9 HP motor, that size usually holds 15-20 HP ones which should weight the same as a 9.9 depending on brand. Happy Boating

9.9 may be too much depending on conditions. The description includes a warning about the bow flipping up and over if air is caught.

Those cats needs to be powered while a boater sits way up front if not risk going airborne if encountering too much up wind while throttling too much. Cats as any other inflatable boat has their own learning curve till the beast is completely tamed and boater feels comfy running with. If going for a 9.9 HP better go for a 15 HP, both shares same CC and weights same, just throttle less. As the saying says : better is more than lesss specially when needing more... Happy Boating

Then you need 3M + long arms if solo boating. Over powering by 50%, especially a light boat subject to to instability, is never a good idea.

The OP has not responded yet what initially was inquired in post 2 which is key, why do you draw premature conclusions.... Happy Boating

Mostly the boat will be used for two people. I was thinking of the 9.9 Mercury which weighs about 100 pounds. Not looking to race it, just cruise around. The boat has 1400 lb capacity.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to go for a 9.9 Merc short shaft. I went back and forth with the cat and the tender but I think the cat will actually fit my needs better. I saw one and talked with the owner and it got very good recommendation.

The electric automatic pump is a must, I would never try inflating this without the electric pump. The 9.9 Merc is more than enough motor for the boat. Max speed is 17 mph. It is a very fun boat and handles well. I was worried about the open front but it stays completely dry. The front makes it easy to get in and out of the boat for swimming or snorkeling.

Nice combo congrats!! Get yourself a 12V battery operated electric air pump to top tubes and deck to their factory recommended working presures. It's very uncomfy to re inflate both with a foot or manual pump while standing on an non rigid unstable surface. If wanting a better hole shot with slight top end encrease install one less pitch prop from the current factory delivered one which surely it's a 10 pitch ? Happy Boating

Hi, thank you for all this great information. 🙏❤️🦋 I noticed that on the calculation chart January 5 1959 is Saturn in Sagittarius. In another Section of the four parts it says it goes up to January 4, 1959. So is January 5, 1959 born 4:52 AM Saturn in Sagittarius or Capricorn? Again thank you for all this great information I’m sharing it with my family and friends. Also how do I find your website ? And do you have a Facebook page? Thank you so much for everything. Love and blessings.

Coleen, If you’re on the cusp, I suggest casting a chart for the time/date/place and checking the placement. You can do that for free at astro.com and probably other sites, too.

Thank you for your calculator. I have Saturn Return in Pisces in the 9th house! I remember that period when I left my job in the airline industry in 1993. It was the biggest mistake of my life! I’m so glad I came back in 1995, but it was a struggle. I’m so glad I didn’t fall into the life of alcohol, drugs and depression for quitting. I am now happy and still in the airline industry. I am ready to face whatever challenges I face on my second saturn return. I’m going to be optimistic, and follow a spiritual path.

Hi! Clicking on the links above, alas, it looks like yoursaturnreturn.net is no more. :/ I wind up at something called simcast, which I don’t believe was your intention. Thanks for this lovely site! 🙏🏽

We checked and couldn’t verify the problem.

I could not get it either – btw Thank you so much for the Calc on Saturn – I was feeling a bit desperate for answers tonight. Now I understand I am on the Saturn lesson plan.

Hi Celestine! I just checked the current planetary alignments (June 4th 2021) and noticed Saturn is currently retrograde in Saturn, in my natal sign Pisces (though not the retrograde part). Does retrograde Saturn affect a person, despite being in retrograde? I’m making some major academic & career decisions at the moment, and my natal Saturn happens to be in the 10th house as well. I’m nervous.

It is retrograde from May 22 to October 11th this year. Saturn goes retro every year, and during that time Saturn issues can come to the fore: responsibility, discipline, limits, tradition, and authority come to mind. Interestingly, Saturn is in Aquarius right now, a sign which is all about the future and being unpredictable — but is traditionally ruled by Saturn — so we’ll see what happens!

Um, pretty sure June 29 is Cancer, not Aquarius. This isn’t calculating correctly.

Perhaps you’re thinking of the sun sign?

Why is a 15° orb used? Seems very wide for a transit – even one of this significance

Can you be more specific about where you’re seeing that, please?

2022 Saturn Triton Catamarans

All of our custom Saturn MC catamarans include our fully removable drop stitch high-pressure air deck floor which is among the most rigid on the worldwide market. It is pressure rated at over 6 psi and easily supports multiple passengers standing at a given time. This floor means maximum comfort and rigidity without compromising stability. The detachable feature allows easy transportation and storage.

The large diameter tubes provide improved performance and stability and the lowered front bow allows swimmers to quickly get in and out of the water when swimming. The splash plate on the back of the transom minimizes outdoor motor splash and the fins on the bottom help with tracking and directional stability.

2021 Model with Upgraded PVC and Inflation Valves

  • Quick and easy multi-chamber inflation and deflation.
  • Attractive sporty look which will turn heads!
  • Extra wide rub strake along tubes bottom.
  • Easy planing with a small electric motor.
  • High-pressure drop-stitch inflatable airdeck floor (rated over 6 psi).
  • Two air chambers per tube for increased safety.
  • Durable rub strake protectors along boat tubes.

Advantages A lot bigger than the other 'standard' inflatable that I have, and also faster. Seems very well built. more Disadvantages A standard-shaft OB motor will not work with this raft. It will cavitate, no matter how far you trim down. I'm using a 1980 Johnson 9.9. So I will either have to find a long-shaft OB motor, or may possibly notch the transom a few inches (Discussing with the manufacturer). more Comment A lot bigger than the other 'standard' inflatable that I have, and also faster. Administrator reply Thank you for your feedback and the great pictures. The new 2023 Saturn Triton catamarans are indeed larger and of greater quality than our prior models, and we appreciate you noticing that. While the transom is custom designed for a short shaft motor, it is possible that certain motors/brands may not perform as well as others. We look forward to continuing to partner with you to help resolve the motor performance.
Comment Steve..just sent you some pics today before the big snow fall tonight...made lifting bridles from new tow straps so they lift from under the tubes worked out great! Cheers Tim Wrangell AK (These photos are now shown on product page) more
Comment I bought this for carrying lumber to remote building sites in Alaska, it's light enough to use the main Halyard to lift it out of the water and place on top of my boat. I will be doing a whole video on YouTube this spring. Steve Susten has delivered on time..as quoted every time....Great Inflatables! more

Catamarans have come a long way from their origins--the double canoes used by Polynesians and Micronesians as far back as the 1700s. The first modern, fast ocean catamaran was built in 1947 in Hawaii, and since then these craft have stretched the limits of speed and luxury for racing and cruising. The largest catamarans have become a phenomenon of naval engineering--the superyacht of tomorrow.
