39m palmer johnson yacht scuttled

39m Palmer Johnson Time to become artificial reef in Florida

The 38.5-metre Palmer Johnson yacht Time has been scuttled in Florida, close to the Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club, in a bid to turn the abandoned aluminum hull into an artificial reef. The remains of the yacht now sit in roughly 50 metres of water and have had "concrete reef modules attached to it" to promote coral growth, according to reporting by media outlet TC Palm.

The scuttling initiative is a joint collaboration between Marine Cleanup Initiative Inc (MCI), St Lucie County artificial reef programme and McCulley Marine Services Inc. The hull was donated by the Martin County Anglers Club of Martin County to the St. Lucie County artificial reef programme in August 2022 after sitting unused on land for 17 years.

" Time has undergone meticulous decommissioning by McCulley Marine Services, under the oversight of MCI, to meet Environmental Protection Agency standards," explained a representative from the MCI.

In a separate statement, MCI added: "Two hundred and sixty-four [tonnes] of stainless aluminium is expected to attract spores of Oculina varicosa. If theories prove correct, in 50 years she'll be graced with Oculina varicosa outside of the Oculina Banks."

In the year of her launch in 1987, Time was the largest aluminium yacht afloat. Exterior design and naval architecture was by Tom Fexas and she featured two Detroit Diesel diesel engines delivering a top speed of 31 knots.

The Cleverest Names for Your Boat from A to Z

My, she sure is yar.

Whether it's for rest and relaxation or fishing and water sports, there are few things better than taking to the high seas. If you're like many others, buying a boat is a long-dreamt-of goal. The decision to purchase a boat is a big one, but picking the name? Now that's a huge decision. Should it be playful or meaningful? Clever or cryptic? The choice is all yours, and it's a choice you probably want to take some time making. From the iconic names of super-yachts to sea-worthy puns, we’ve rounded up the most chic, popular, and all around classic handles. You've got options.

boat names

If you want to keep your boat's name short and sweet, a strong name like Abyss or Andiamo ("Let's go") will surely do the trick. Or might we suggest something sillier, like Aquaholic ?

boat names

A cleverly crafted phrase like Black Pearl or Bankers Hours makes a statement without having to say too much. If it's more of a booze cruise you seek, Bottoms Up or Bacchus , for the Roman god of wine, are solid choices.

boat names

Something to keep in mind when naming your boat– no matter how big or small the name is you choose– is what it will look like on a hat or jacket for you and your crew. Classic names like Calypso or Carpe Diem sound as good as they look.

Text, Font, Vehicle, Boating, Adaptation, Water transportation, Boat, Photography, Photo caption, Vacation,

From Destiny to Dream Weaver there are tons of ways to demonstrate how much your boat means to you through its name.

Sailing, Boat, Water transportation, Vehicle, Sail, Watercraft, Sailboat, Schooner, Sailing ship, Boating,

A funny pun like Fish Tales or Fantasea as a name is sure to make you friends around the marina.

boat names

Boats are commonly referred to as 'she' and given feminine names, which many historians originated from the role of goddesses and mothers who were though to protect a ship’s voyage. Y ou can go with a common one, like Gemma, or choose a name with personal significance to safeguard your travels just as well, according to the superstition.

Text, Font, Poster, Advertising, Book cover, World,

You are sure to have many memories of relaxation and good times on your boat and its name should reflect that. Onboard Happy Hours or Hakuna Matata , spirits are bound to be high.

Yacht, Boat, Sky, Luxury yacht, Vehicle, Water transportation, Ocean, Sea, Calm, Vacation,

With a name like Island Time you'll automatically switch to vacation mode when you board your vessel.

Water, Sky, Text, Font, Calm, Ocean, Boat, Sea, Sailboat, Vehicle,

Want to feel like royalty? Take a cue from Queen Elizabeth and her yacht Jubilee . The regal name will have you ruling the high seas in no time.

Watercraft, Text, Boat, Font, Naval architecture, Publication, Book, Boats and boating--Equipment and supplies, Ship, Poster,

A witty phrase that interchanges "knot" and "not" is great for a light-hearted and jovial boat name–and there's no better time for a nautical pun. Our favorites include Knot Working and Knot on Call, but feel free to let your creative juices flow!

boat names

Show off your sense of humor with something like Liquid Asset , or your sunny attitude with License to Chill or Life is Good .

Water transportation, Text, Yacht, Vehicle, Boat, Font, Naval architecture, Watercraft, Ship, Luxury yacht,

A popular trend for boat names is translating a phrase into another language. Brazilian businessman, Alexandre Grendene Bartelle, used the French pronoun for 'miss' when naming his super-yacht, Madame Kate, while others have used the word Mahalo, which translates to thank you in Hawaiian.

boat names

Reference the past with names like North Star (which sailors historically used as guidance on long voyages) or Neptune’s Glory , alluding to the Roman god of the sea. Maybe you'd prefer to opt for something a little more zen, like Nirvana , Namaste , No Worries , or No Regrets .

Water, Water resources, Water transportation, Natural landscape, Boat, Yacht, Vehicle, Ocean, Sailing, Calm,

When in doubt, a short and strong word goes very far– Ohana , Oasis , Orion , Obsession , Osprey , and Odyssey are all powerful options for your boat’s name.

Sky, Text, Water, Font, Ocean, Natural landscape, Sea, Calm, Morning, Cloud,

You know what they say: money talks. People love to use financial terms for their yacht names. Principal Interest is just one of many different monetary puns that you could use.

Blue, Text, Water, Font, Sky, Ocean, Calm, Adaptation, Thinking,

Attaching a special meaning to your boat is one of the best things about being able to name it. A name like Querencia, which refers to a place where a person feels authentically like themselves, is a great way to ensure your boat's name is sentimental.

Water transportation, Sailing, Boat, Vehicle, Sail, Sailing, Sailboat, Watercraft, Mast, Recreation,

No one would be able to turn down an afternoon aboard the Rum Runner, as it sounds like a guaranteed good time.

boat names

For a classic and timeless name, there are a great deal of sea phrases to choose such as Sea Spirit or Second Wind . Names that play on words, such as Sea Senora or Seas the Day are quality names, too. T he options are as wide as the horizon.

boat names

Another route is to give your boat a name with a double entendre. Playful picks like The Good Life, Therapy, or Time Out are fun and don't take themselves too seriously. If you're Margaritaville-bound, we particularly like The Salt Shaker .

How to Name a Boat: 6 Tips for Naming Your New Boat

how to name a boat

6 Tips for Naming Your Boat

1. keep your boat name brief .

While it's tempting to craft elaborate and descriptive names, keeping them concise and to the point is essential. A short name not only looks sleek on the transom but also ensures clarity and ease during VHF radio communications . Imagine trying to convey a long and convoluted name amidst crackling radio static – simplicity ensures your message gets across swiftly and clearly. So, when brainstorming boat names, aim for brevity without sacrificing personality or impact.

2. Consider Incorporating a Familiar Name

Incorporating your family's name or that of a loved one into your boat's name adds a personal touch to your vessel's identity.  Not only does it honor the bond shared with those closest to you, but it also symbolizes the unity and camaraderie experienced aboard your maritime adventures. Whether it's a nod to generations past or a tribute to those who've shared countless memories on the water, including a family member's name infuses your boat with a sense of history, legacy, and emotional connection that enriches every voyage.

3. Incorporate Your Profession or Another Hobby

Infusing your boat's name with elements of your profession or hobbies adds another layer of significance and personality. It's not uncommon to come across clever and thematic names like "Knot on Call" for a physician's vessel or "Doctor's Orders" for a boat owned by medical professionals. Incorporating your profession or hobby into the name not only reflects your expertise or interests but also serves as a conversation starter among fellow enthusiasts on the water.

4. Add a Witty Pun

When naming your boat, puns and double meanings reign supreme, injecting a dose of wit and humor into your vessel's identity.  Building upon the previous point, it's no surprise that attorneys often embrace wordplay to incorporate their profession into their boat's name. Names like "Alibi," "Plead Insanity," or "Knot Guilty" not only showcase their legal expertise but also highlight their playful side.  Embracing puns and wordplay allows you to infuse your boat's name with personality and charm, ensuring that it stands out on the water!

5. Pay Homage to Your Favorite Song, Movie, or Other Art You Love

Drawing inspiration from your favorite songs, movies , or other cultural works can yield some captivating boat names! Whether it's a homage to Jimmy Buffett's laid-back anthem with "Margaritaville" or a nod to the legendary ship from "Pirates of the Caribbean" with "The Black Pearl," infusing your boat's name with elements from beloved art adds a touch of flair and nostalgia to your maritime adventures.

6. When in Doubt, Make it Entertaining

Boating is not just about navigating the waters; it's about fostering a sense of community and shared joy. If a glance at your transom makes people laugh, you've just helped to make the boating world a better place.

Deciding How to Name Your New Boat

Consider the above as you decide what to name your boat, but also take your time! Many people feel pressured to come up with a name the day they buy their new boat when, in truth, it may take you a few months to determine the perfect name for your boat.

Some owners find that the perfect name emerges organically as they spend time on the water, getting to know the personality of their vessel. Others find inspiration in literature, mythology, or personal experiences. Don't rush the process; allow the name to reveal itself naturally, and when it does, you'll know it's the right fit.

tips for naming a boat

How to Christen a Boat with its Name

Christening a boat is open to interpretation! However, most boat christening ceremonies consist of steps such as:

  • Gather some friends and family, then launch the boat and tie it to a pier or dock.
  • Pass around a celebratory drink: think champagne (for passengers over the age of 21) and mocktails (for the captain).
  • Place a green, leafy branch (of any sort) in the boat to represent a safe return to land.
  • Name the boat and make a toast to the adventures ahead.
  • Go for a boat ride!

In conclusion, naming your boat is not just a formality but an opportunity to infuse your vessel with personality, meaning, and a touch of your own unique flair. Whether you draw inspiration from family ties, professions, hobbies, favorite songs or movies, or simply opt for a clever pun, the key is to choose a name that resonates with you and captures the essence of your maritime adventures.

Boat name ideas: 21 tacks to take when naming your boat.

Post by Becky at Dockwa - Published on 04/28/21 12:00 PM

A Boat Named

Do you stay traditional and name your boat after a sweetheart? If you've been jilted, do you name your boat something bitter as a form of catharsis? If you're not interested in naming your boat after a dame, your boat's name could represent a struggle you've overcome, a quest you're beginning, or something as simple as the cocktail you plan on sipping while at the helm.  Learn how to name your boat and see some of the country's best boat names.

While you're here: Get the free Dockwa app , create your free account , scope out some sweet dockage discounts , or find your next long-term slip or mooring .

boaty-mcboatface-boat-naming

Jokers beware: as the  British NERC researchers  can tell you, the name of your boat says a lot about you, and leaves a lasting impression.

To take a page out of the Halcyon Passages boating blog:

You can name your boat anything you want to and my opinion is just that. And that opinion is that a name should be one word sometimes two, but one if you can do it. Under no circumstances should it be a whole sentence. ...I miss the days of boats with real names like, Victory, Ranger, Dauntless, and Endeavor.  When I send a distress call announcing that the vessel, that I have treated with such pride and respect, is taking me straight to the bottom, the Coast Guard undoubtedly will say, “Holy cow, now that’s a great boat name.”

How to Choose A Boat Name

1. check how common it is.

Before choosing a name, please give it a run through one of the boat name databases available online, and check out the annual BoatUS Top 10 Boat Names List . If you choose a popular name, and in particular a name that is popular in your boating region, there's a good chance you'll eventually cross paths with your name-doppelgänger and cause some confusion over the radio waves.

2. Check for adaptability

Imagine the scenarios in which you'll say or hear your boat's name. Envision yourself needing to call your boat name over a VHF, as you'll likely need to do many times before you and your boat part ways. As per PropTalk's recommendation, "Imagine yourself using this new name three times on Channel 16. Consider how easy it is to say and how easy it is for other boats to understand." What will it look like if your boat makes front-page headlines?

If you're a sailor, imagine winning a regatta. Do you want to hear "Congratulations,  B-Yacht'ch !" when you approach the podium? (...Maybe! It actually has a fun ring to it.) Once you've chosen a name, head to the  United States Coast Guard site  to make it official.

3. Make it official

Once you've settled on a name, you can head over to the United States Coast Guard site to get all the information you need to make it official.

Boat Name Superstitions

Once named, superstition dictates that it's bad luck to change the name of a boat. But if you must, check out this blog to see the tradition that follows (as with most things in boating), which can clear your boat of bad juju.  One boat renaming ceremony we found: place a piece of paper with the boat name on it in a small box, burn the box, then release the ashes into the sea or river. If you're not one for superstition, you're not alone – mainly as this one may have come about to dodge the attention of tax agencies when a large ship changed hands.

Popular Boat Name Categories

Don't call it a comeback! By far the easiest way to name a boat: ditch its predecessor. Whether your last vessel had a run-in with the sea floor or you wanted an upgrade, calling your second, third, and fourth boat after the first is a breeze. You don't even have to change the artwork on the boat decal. If you're attached to a boat name, there's no shame in wanting to keep it. Rendezvous II, Abigail Rose II, Act III, Adventure Us IIII – all names worthy of a second life.

The Workaholic

Whether you're obsessed with your job, want to reference how much you hate it, or see boating as a business networking opportunity, naming your boat something related to your occupation opens up a world of boat name puns to help break the ice when you're out on the water.

Our favorites of 2016:  Exit Strategy, Knot On Call , and  Floating Doc

The Love Boat

Naming a boat after the love of your life doesn't just score brownie points; it carries on an age-old tradition of naming ships after wives.

Our pals at GetMyBoat did the research on this one:

There are several theories about how this came to be. One is that since the word for “ship” in the languages of the Mediterranean was feminine, the gender of the ship remained the same even in languages in which the word for ship or boat was male or gender-neutral. Another theory is that since boats were traditionally given female names, they became associated with women. In addition, working boats and ships were historically manned by all-male crews. Some ships, like whaling ships, would be at sea for years at a time, and would have a closer relationship with the boat than the mothers, wives, or sweethearts they left behind on shore. Legend has it that ships would sometimes behave like women too, with their own personalities and the specific ways they liked to be handled.

In the Dockwa boat list we found a few  Carol Annes , a handful of  Jenny s, a  Jeaninne III  and a slew of boats named after their missus's -  Miss Molly, Miss Megan, Miss Maggie , the list goes on.

Our favorite Dockwa boat name in 2016:  Captain's Lady . Gotta give the captain credit for the built-in flexibility.

Our 2017 pick:  Sweet Caroline . Even if you're not a Boston fan, we love a boat name that gets the harbor humming.

2018: Lost Keys

2019: Mr. T and Me

2020: Platinum Dream

2021: P aumanok and Booger

The Weatherbird

The Eskimo language may have more than 100 words for "snow," but we'd be willing to bet that the number of terms for wind puts that to shame. As well there should be – every day on the breeze is different. So if a particular day or type of wind strikes your fancy, or stays with you for reasons you can't quite describe, perhaps you're a Weatherbird.

Our favorite wind-related Dockwa boat names in 2016:  Second Wind , and  Wind Chaser

The 2017 favorite:  Bris de Mer , which a boater relayed to us translates into French for "Breaking of Sea" – Sea Breaker. Lovely!

2018:  Stella Maris

2019: Sowwanin II

2020: Irish Hurricane

2021: Witch of November

The Competitor You know them when you see them. When you read the name on the scratch sheet, these are the boats that give you a chill. You don't just want it to win. You want it to crush every other boat in the regatta. Comanche, Dark Star, and SPOOKIE are some of our favorites to see on the start lines. Favorite competitive boat names of 2016:  Triumph  and  STOLEN Our fastest pick for 2017:  Flight Risk 2018:  Bird of Prey 2019: None this year, but to make up for it we added a "Boater's Best Friend" category. This year's winner was Bosun:  We named our boat as well as our dog Bosun. Both are well trusted, dependable, and reliable. The definition of “bosun” suits both the dog as well as our boat well: "a ship's officer in charge of equipment and the crew." – Chris W., Rowayton, CT.  Check out this new category! 2020:  Lady Minx 2021: Miss Mayhem Goddess, Spirits, and Legends Boating can teach you several things: resourcefulness, independence, geography, cooking, and, of course, a wealth of information about obscure Germanic/Greek/Norse deities, fantastic legends, and eerie seafaring stories. Looking to tales is an excellent way to find a name for your boat that is unique and classic. A few of our favorites:  Calliope , the Greek muse often associated with eloquence and epic poetry,  Valkyrie , the Norse figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live, and  Freyja , a Norse goddess associated with love, sex, beauty, fertility , and gold. Our favorite goddess-themed boat name of 2016:  Hespera , the Greek spirit of immortality. 2017's pick: We like the sound of  Pyewacket , which was one of the spirits in the story of the witches of Essex, England, in 1644, described as both an imp and a polecat by the "witch" who claimed they visited her. If not that origin story, the boat could be named for the 1967 children's novel of the same name, in which the main character is an alley cat.  2018:  Dea Latis  2019:  Alobar 2020: Vayu 2021: PINCOYA The Heartstrings Whether you had your heart broken or lost your fortune in a drunken night of gambling–or both–naming a boat after your tale of woe can be cathartic. For instance, we can't imagine a vessel named After Child Support  had happy beginnings. The boat name that most stood out in the Dockwa roster:  Life's a Wreck . Hope everything's okay, buddy! 2017's, er, winners:  Bittersweet  and  Grumpy Old Man .  2018: Solace , No Regrets , Fighting Lady , and T n T Too  2019:  Knot A Day Goes By  2020: Burnt Out 2021: Peregrine The Musician Three Little Birds, Comfortably Numb, Aleggro, Adagio, Calypso, Cantada  –captains love music! From classical to contemporary, naming your boat after your favorite tune can give you a theme song to blast as you leave the harbor (we're looking at you,  Wild T'ing ), or a go-to to crank up once you've reached calm waters and are sipping on wine. Our favorite musically-themed boat name of 2016:  White Album , who apparently chose the name to avoid having to put the name on the hull.  Our 2017 pick:  The Madman Across the Water . Kudos to this captain for being boating-apropos while showing us there's more to  the Elton John album  than Tiny Dancer. We also love  Hotel California  – if we see that boat we'd expect the crew aboard to be living it up while living aboard.  2018:  Three Little Birds 2019:  Row Jimmy 2020: Bellini 2021: Alestorm The Fun-Lovin' Free-Wheeler! Boat Drinks! Comfortably Numb! Yolo!  You'll get no judgment from us. People buy boats for different reasons, and if yours is to have a boozy getaway on the water, so be it! But, be careful with this naming category. If the name is too on the nose, "Getting Slizzard" anyone?, don't be surprised when Coasties show up to survey the scene. Our favorite fun-lovin' boat name of 2016:  Zimbabalooba! Sounds like a wacky good time.  For 2017, we have a soft spot for  Dune Buggy . We imagine this is a sporty little runabout!  2018: Mad Cap 2019:  Too Much Weekend 2020: Weekend Bender 2021: Bad Idea The Pop Culture Fan From the The S.S. Minnow to Cast Away to the Pirate Ship Revenge , harbors always seem to have their fair share of pop culture references.  Our favorite pop-culture boat name of 2016:  Honey Badger . We assume this boat's namesake is the  2011 nature video  that went viral after some creative narrating, which would lead us to also assume that the owners of this boat don't care and have a pretty fun sense of humor.  2017's winner:  Kobayashi Maru  hands down. The name is apropos for referencing the captain's test in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot, and has an even sweeter connotation for Trek fans who know that this test is designed to be unbeatable, to see how a captain reacts in a no-win scenario. (Spoiler alert) Even better: the test is beaten by a captain who doesn't believe in no-win scenarios. Live long and prosper.  2018:  Squalus  2019:  Shortshank Redemption  2020: McHale’s Navy 2021: Millenium Dolphin The Pun Master Some people love a good pun–enough to slap one on the stern of a boat that will likely be one of the most significant investments they make in their life. Pun names are harmless, even if they are groan-worthy, to name a few:  ABSeas, Comocean, YEAH BOUY, Knot So Fast, Nauti Girl, Ships n' Giggles, Fanta-Sea,  and  Extra-Sea . Catamaran owners seem particularly guilty of indulging in puns, with names like  Cat-astrophe, KatAttack, Katnip, and  Katatonic . And then there are the puns that get a bit more risque–the afore-mentioned  B-Yacht'ch ,  Morning Wood , and  Master Baiter (Do you bring your mothers on that boat?). We'll keep things a little more G-Rated for our boat name pick.

Our favorite punny boat name of 2016:  Seas the Dream .

2017's punmaster: Whichever pirate owns  Arrr-n-Arrrr .

2018:  Jaunty

2019:  Ship Show

2020: DEBAITABLE

2021: Pied à mer

The Storyteller When perusing the long list of Dockwa boaters, many don't fit into one of the previous categories, and some in particular give pause. Twenty Two Bucks ? What's the story there? Witch of Tilloo ? Definitely needed to google that. Did the owner of Triple Dog Dare Ya buy their boat on a dare?  Ou r 2016 favorite boat name:  Against All Odds . 2017:  Chocolate Socks.  If you see a vessel by this name at your docks or on your mooring field, please approach with caution and get the story of this odd name. 2018:  OH NO 2019:  Deja Blue 2020: Off The Rails 2021: Sheekasay The Linguist In 2017 we updated this post to include another category, as we felt compelled salute captains whose boat names are nod to a cultural sentiment they appreciate or their own family's culture. This year's pick s:  Andiamo! , Italian for "Let's go!" and  Ladatio , which we've learned is Hindi for "scandal." 2018's favorite:  Satori Blue 2019:  Lagniappe 2020: Tallawah 2021: Hahalua All in the Family 2018:  OutNumbered : I am fortunate to have a wonderful wife & two teenage daughters... however I am truly outnumbered at home & in everything I do. We laugh that people at various ports/marinas sometimes ask if I am an accountant or deal with numbers to which I respond, you will see in a minute as the family comes aboard! – Dan F., Newport RI 2019:  Thisldu 2020: Beau Twyde 2021: The Belfry and Muthashp Paying Homage 2018:  Gray Ghost : My boat is a gray Robalo R227 named after my father’s ship in the navy. Officially the USS Newport News, the heavy cruiser earned the nickname “The Gray Ghost from the East Coast” during her service in Vietnam, due to numerous missions taking fire without being hit. Her sister ship USS Salem is berthed in Quincy MA. – Randy B.  2019:  Nauti Nelli 2020: Cupecoy 2021: Steinsvika Dinghy Duos We've seen some cute as heck dinghy names over the past year and thought they warranted their category. We, of course, love when they have their boat name backstory, particularly when they're a standalone vessel instead of a +1, but we also love when the name is a nod to the mothership.  2020: A close family friend joined the Special Operations Unit for the Marines and was KIA. During his brutal training where all he wanted to do was give up he would recite the phrase in his head "Beast mode no breaks." This phrase became common among our families aft er. Our boat is named Beast Mode and our tender is named No Breaks .  2021: Bubblecuffer A Boater's Best Friend 2019: Bosun 2020: Alpha Dog 2021: Gunny's Dream Literary Reference Boat Names 2020: SKYMARK  came from a poem from Robert Frost bemoaning being somewhat lost at sea on a cloudy night and asking the clouds to part so he could find his old "sky marks" in the heavens so he could once again determine his location; thus the name. I have used it since my first sailboat in 1981. 2021: Vagrant Gypsy Money Matters 2020: Bottom's Up : Purchased from the funds of liquor sales at Bourbon Street Pub in Key West.  – Conch Harbor Marine, Key West, FL 2021: Ka-Ching and A LOAN AT SEA   These Modern Times / Current Event Boat Names 2020 : Covid Therapy : Boat the boat while stressing out about being quarantined during Covid 19 and thinking there will be nothing to do in the summer – hence our new boat! 2021: Lake Mode , @sea.calm , and Social Distins Change of Pace A frequent theme we've spotted with boat names is that the owner(s) have decided to slow things down, downsize, upsize (usually upsize), or, as was the case of our 2020 winners, finally take charge of tackling their boating bucket list at breakneck speed.   2020:  Here Today : Here Today was launched In January 2019 in the Virgin Islands and has traveled to 57 different ports from the Caribbean to New England – for our short stays we are “Here Today”! 2021: Call Me Crazy and Last Dance

How to Name a Boat: Complete Guide to Choosing The Perfect Name

John Sampson

One of the most exciting aspects of being a new boat owner is naming your vessel. Take a drive to the local marina, walk around the slips, and you’re sure to see plenty of interesting boat names.

From “Golden Slipper” to “Angelica” and many more, there are so many options for selecting your boat’s name that it can leave you swamped with indecision.

Whether you want to name your boat after your favorite song, a pun, or a short quote, settling on the right name takes some time.

One thing is for sure when you complete the christening ceremony and name your vessel, there’s no going back from your decision.

We put together this helpful guide on how to name a boat to take the stress and hassle out of the task.

Why Do We Name Boats?

Most of us don’t name our cars like the “General Lee” from the “Dukes of Hazard” or “Kit” from “Knight Rider.” However, naming a boat is essential. It’s a part of maritime tradition and a blessing of good luck for the vessel and its voyages.

The culture of naming boats started more than a thousand years ago. Captains would name their vessels after gods as a sign of tribute and respect, asking the deity to watch over the boat and its crew while at sea.

Some sailors believed the choice of name for the vessel could mean the difference between a successful journey and being lost at sea. Christening a boat has always included a ceremony involving the use of wine or champagne or some form of elite beverage that’s hard to procure.

The custom started with boat owners pouring the wine over the boat as an offering to the gods. The ceremony would occur under the full moon’s light at high tide. Gradually, the culture evolved to include breaking bottles of champagne on the boat’s bow as a symbol of success and good luck when christening modern boats.

Why Do We Name Boats?

Should You Rename a Boat?

After you settle on a name for your boat, you’re kind of stuck with it for good. One of the deepest superstitions in the boating world revolves around renaming boats and the misfortune it brings to the crew and captain during journeys.

The myth of renaming boats and receiving bad luck extends back to the early days of sailing. When captains would rename boats, it was a shun to the deity or god they previously named the vessel after, defying their influence in the crew and captains’ safety at sea.

The original myth states that “the Ledger of the Deep” records the name of every sea-faring vessel taking to the ocean. The Ledger of the Deep is the god Poseidon’s personal record book. A captain would have to purge the vessel’s original name from the ledger to avoid bad luck bestowed upon himself and his crew. The captain would have to rid the world of every mention of the boat’s name to stay on the good side of the Greek god.

Most captains would burn the old name board of the boat and cast the ashes to the sea. After destroying all the parts of the ship bearing the vessel’s original name, you’ll have to conduct another christening ceremony using a special spell that we can’t repeat here.

Completing the ceremony is absolutely essential before heading out to sea, or captains run the risk of encountering the wrath of Poseidon.

Boat Naming Superstitions

The boating community also has several superstitions for christening and naming boats. Most of them involve no-go names that might bring you bad luck.

For example, naming the vessel after a hurricane or big storm at sea isn’t a good idea. Also, naming it after sunken vessels is a bad move, so forget about calling it the next “Titanic.”

Tradition also shows that it’s unlucky to name a boat with a name starting with the letter “O” or “A.” It’s also important to never perform a christening ceremony on a Friday.

Why Do Sailors Call Boats “She?”

One of the interesting phenomena around naming boats is that most owners choose to give them female names. Most people will also refer to vessels using the pronoun “she.” So, why do we link boats to the female gender?

The reality is that no one really knows why people started referring to ships and boats in the female form. One of the most reasonable answers for the practice comes from the early tradition of christening boats over a millennia ago.

Most captains would christen their boat with a goddess’ name. The tradition stuck, and that’s the most likely reason why we refer to boats and yachts as “she,” and it’s also why some motorists use it for their cars as well.

Top Tips for Naming a Boat

We recommend keeping the name of your boat short and sweet. There’s no need to use a string of words like “Gods Brilliant and Beautiful Sunrise” for your boat. “Gods Sunrise” would be a better choice. Stick to one or two words and seven to ten letters for the name.

The name needs to be short enough to fit on transoms and easy for the coast guard and others vessels to understand during emergency radio communications. Regardless of the marine superstitions involved with naming your boat, you want to choose something timeless that you won’t need to change later.

So, naming the boat after your wife is a bad idea since if you end up getting divorced, you’re likely going to want to change the boat’s name.

Most boat owners will name the vessel after a hobby or interest they have in their life that they are passionate about. For instance, if you’re a doctor, you could name the boat something like “Prescription,” “Doctor’s Order’s,” or “Checkup.”

Choosing a name with a double meaning or a pun is also a popular choice. For example, if you’re a legal professional, you could name the boat “Winning,” “Knot Guilty,” or “The Verdict.” The name should match the owner’s identity and the boat itself.

A good name blends the owner’s personality with how they managed to procure the boat in their life. For example, if you’re a firefighter naming a cruiser, you could call the vessel the “Hook and Hose.” However, if you’re looking for a name that would suit a high-performance boat, “Backdraft” or “Inferno” might be a better choice.

It’s also common for people to name boats after their favorite movie or song. However, we recommend keeping the name to a nautical reference if you go this route. Calling your boat “The Black Pearl” after the legendary vessel from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise would be a good example.

Here are the key takeaways you need to know about naming your boat.

  • Choose a name that’s one to three words long.
  • The name should fit on the transom.
  • The name needs to be easy to read and repeat in emergency communications.
  • Don’t name the boat after emergency situations, such as “man overboard.”
  • Keep it classy and avoid racists and sexist names.
  • Remember, you’re going to have to say the name over the radio to strangers at some time, so don’t name the boat anything that’s embarrassing to repeat over an open channel.

Tips for Naming a Boat

  • Think about a traditional swashbuckling name for the vessel.
  • Try a lifestyle name or use a foreign language term.

Settling On the Right Name for Your Boat

It will take some time to settle on the right name for your boat. To boat owners, the practice of naming their boat is nearly as important as naming a child. Like your kids, you can’t just rename the boat a few months later to something else. Poseidon wouldn’t agree.

We recommend you write down a list of your top five to ten names and keep them on your phone for a week or so. Stare at the list every time you have a spare moment, and some of the names will begin to; look more attractive than others.

Ask your friends and family members for suggestions based on your ideas. Toss around your list of names with colleagues at work and keep the names in the back of your mind at all times.

The more feedback you get, the easier the selection process gets. By the end of the second week, you’ll have your boat’s new name ready for the christening ceremony.

Christening a Boat with its New Name

Cultures around the world have differences in how they christen boats. The Vikings are the first culture to christen ships.

However, they didn’t do it by cracking a bottle of champagne. Instead, they would make a human sacrifice to the gods as a way to bless the crew.

Middle-age European traditions involved sprinkling holy water over the boat.

The British Navy started the popular culture of smashing a bottle of high-quality champagne on the boat’s bow. This practice is no longer honored due to the environmental waste caused by the broken bottle in the Marina.

Some of the common modern christening ceremonies are the following.

  • Gather your friends and family to launch your boat for the first time.
  • Pass around a glass of champagne to everyone for a celebratory drink.
  • Place a large green leaf, like a palm, on the bow to symbolize the safe return to the land from your voyages.
  • Name the boat with a toast and pour a glass of champagne out over the bow.

Have fun Christening Your Boat

Take Your Family or Friends Out for a Ride

After naming the boat, it’s time to take everyone out on the lake, river, or ocean for a spin. Remember to take it easy on your christening drive.

The last thing you need is to go too fast and end up in an accident on your first time on the boat – that would be severe bad luck for future journeys. Play it safe and take a slow christening drive – resist the urge to open the throttle on your maiden voyage.

If you decide to go against the norm and smash a bottle of bubbly on the bow, remember this; The bottle is likely more durable than you think.

You might end up swinging it, only to find the bottle doesn’t break. However, the impact may cause damage to the hull and the paintwork, cracking the gel coating, ruining the finish of the vessel. Targeting a stainless steel cleat is a better choice than the fiberglass hull.

If you want to save the environment, we recommend placing the bottle inside a carrier bag as you swing it. This strategy collects the glass from the break instead of going into the marina where it might cut people’s feet.

How To Name A Boat: Inspiration, Dos, Don’ts, And More

Joe Appleton

A good boat requires a good name. A nameless boat is a sorry sight to behold—and there are more nameless boats out there than you’d think. It’s not hard to see why. Coming up with potential boat names is no easy task. There are certain conventions you might feel obliged to follow. Cool boat names seem to be required to have a bit of wit about them. Funny boat names often need to be built on top of a hilarious and subtle pun. And naturally, these names have to be unique boat names.

Boaty McBoatface

Well, that’s what people think anyway. The truth is that good boat names don’t have to be funny, witty, unique, or particularly clever. They just have to be special to you.

But that still requires some thought though.

Contrary to popular belief, you can take as long as you need to come up with a good name. Despite what tradition and superstition suggests, you can use your boat before going through the motions of a christening ceremony . A boat can remain nameless until the perfect name occurs to you. It’s not going to fall under some maritime curse, and you won’t anger the gods if you take it for a spin before you’ve given it a name.

Besides, even a brand new boat has probably been tested in the water before it was delivered, either by the manufacturer or by prospective buyers. If any sea god was to be offended, they didn’t do anything about it then, and if any curse was to fall on anyone, it would be on the person who did the quality assurance, and not you.

Granted, it takes some of the romance out of those old nautical christening traditions, but surely it’s better to christen you boat at a later date with a name that it truly deserves rather than rush into a christening with a poorly chosen moniker? Wouldn’t it be better to select a name that suits your boat’s character after you’ve had time to properly get to know each other? Taking your time makes a lot more sense, right?

Even if you decided to take your time, you might still require a little bit of inspiration. Here are a few important things to keep in mind as you start your search for the best boat names.

How To Choose A Boat Name

If you’re struggling to find a boat name that reflects your personality, try some of these approaches. It beats wading through pages and pages of boat puns that don’t fit the bill. Instead, take these ideas on board and come up with something special.

How To Name A Boat

#01. Keep it short

Good ship names are short and memorable. Ideally, you should aim for a name that’s a single word. You can go up to three if you think it needs it, but any more is overkill. Single words are best: they’re easy to remember, cheaper to print (if you’re paying for your boat decals per character!), and easy to understand. It’s important that they’re easy to understand, especially when you have to make your presence known over the radio waves .

#02. Aim close to home

By close to home, we mean think of your family. Popular boat names come directly from close bonds. The name of a person you love, or a beloved family pet, or the name of a place that holds some kind of significance in your heart. All of these can make unique boat names that mean something distinctly personal to you. Historically, naming your boat after someone special was a common theme. These days, you can riff off of that theme in a number of ways.

#03. Make it personal

Think about your profession, or a particular hobby that helps define you as a person, and see if you can come up with a name that symbolizes those things. A police officer’s boat could be called the Black Maria , while an attorney might get a thrill out of naming their boat Sea Trial , or Miss Demenour . In terms of hobbyists, a clarinet enthusiast might use a name lie Woodwind, or a gypsy jazz aficionado might like a name like Django .

#04. Use pop culture

Another way of coming up with good boat names is to mine your book, film, and music collection. If you have a favorite book, why not choose something straight from its pages? Don’t go for the obvious Moby Dick Pequod , but try branching out and finding something more subtle. Naturally, they don’t have to be nautical in nature, but a nautical sounding name is always a solid choice for a boat name.

#05. Use comedy

There’s no shortage of comedy out on the water. Some boat names are hilarious puns, or rely on a bit of double entendre to create a memorable name. Cirrhosis of the River , Nauti-Buoy , Master Baiter, and similar sounding names are always good value. If you’re looking for good fishing boat names, do a Google search for British fish and chip shops. Those guys know how to come up with a fishing-related name or two. The Codfather , Oh My Cod , Fishcotheque …Sure, they’re oddly specific, but they’re also pretty funny.

#06. Use a name generator

If you’re really stuck for inspiration, you can always try using a name generator. These generators use random selection to come up with apt and interesting names. Since choosing a boat name seems to be a regular problem for boaters, we’ve put together our own boat name generator to help you out.

#07. Try something traditional

If in doubt, you can always play it safe by going for something traditional. You can’t go wrong with something from the classics, or something from ancient mythology. Elemental gods are great choices, and you could use Poseidon after the God of the Sea, or Boreas, Notus, Eurus, or Zephyr, after the gods of the North, South, East, and West Winds respectively. You can’t go wrong with something classic, so if you run out of ideas, go with something like this.

In Summary: The Truth About Boat Names

There’s no shortage of advice about finding the perfect boat name, and there’s no shortage of superstition out there too. Some will tell you that you can’t name it this, or you can’t call it that, and that you shouldn’t sail before you’ve put a name on it. At the end of the day, superstition is superstition. Don’t let a bit of superstition get in the way of you doing things your way.

Choose a name that you like, when you’re good and ready, and display it proudly on your transom. As long as it isn’t offensive and you can say it clearly in an emergency, then name it whatever you want.

Do’s and Don’ts

Here are some key do’s and don’ts to consider when choosing a name for a boat:

  • Do make it personal: Choose a boat name that reflects your personality, interests, or something meaningful to you.
  • Do consider the boat’s purpose: Think about the primary use of the boat and choose a name that aligns with it.
  • Do keep it short and easy to pronounce: A concise and clear name is memorable and easy for others to understand.
  • Do choose a unique name: Stand out from the crowd by selecting a boat name that is distinctive and not commonly used.
  • Do consider nautical or boating themes: Incorporate elements related to the sea, sailing, or boating to add a touch of nautical charm to the name.
  • Do check for offensive or inappropriate connotations: Ensure the chosen name does not have any unintended negative or offensive associations.
  • Do consider wordplay or clever puns: A witty or clever boat name can make it more memorable and fun.
  • Do check for existing boat names: Research to make sure the name you choose is not already in use to avoid confusion.
  • Don’t choose a generic name: Avoid generic or overused boat names that may blend in with others on the water.
  • Don’t select a name that is difficult to spell or pronounce: Keep it simple and avoid complex or hard-to-pronounce names.
  • Don’t choose a name that is too long: Long names can be challenging to read and remember.
  • Don’t use offensive or controversial language: Stay away from any names that may be offensive, controversial, or inappropriate.
  • Don’t limit yourself to trends: While trendy names may seem appealing at the moment, they can quickly become outdated.
  • Don’t forget to consider future resale: If you plan to sell the boat in the future, choose a name that has broad appeal and is not overly personalized.
  • Don’t rush the decision: Take your time to brainstorm, consider options, and choose a name that you genuinely love.
  • Don’t disregard local regulations: Check if there are any local regulations or restrictions on boat names in your area and ensure your chosen name complies with them.

Naming a boat is an exciting opportunity to give your vessel identity and share it with the world.

Take your time to think about why you own the boat, and choose a name that represents you, your goals, and the style of boating you enjoy most.

Good luck, and thanks for reading!

SAVOIR FAIRE Sea change: the evolution of yacht timers

Heuer Aquastar Regate advertising, circa 1964 © TAG Heuer

At TAG Heuer, we’ve always had an intimate connection with the ocean. Our transition into nautical timing birthed some of our greatest stopwatches and timepieces ever. We’ve dug into our archives to uncover the evolution of our yacht timers. From the 1930s to present day, discover a glorious collection of pieces that have inspired both watch collectors and sailing pros.

What is a yacht timer?

To appreciate yacht timers, it’s important to understand that yacht races are defined by one critical moment. The moment when the signal boat blasts a horn and raises a flag to mark the start of the race. There is a 5-minute countdown to the start so the yachts can try to hold a strong position at the start line. This countdown to the start of a race is almost as important as the race itself. If a boat crosses the start line too soon, it is penalized. If it crosses the start line too late, it gives away an advantage to its competitors.

Under the rules of yacht racing, flags are raised and horns are sounded 5 minutes, 4 minutes, 1 minute before the start and of course, at the start of the race. There may also be important countdowns from the 10 and 15 minute marks. Skippers must be able to control their boats as well as calculate and anticipate the time leading up to the start. By working closely with sailing experts, Heuer developed carefully thought-out yacht timers to measure pre-race intervals, tides and of course, the race.

1930s – stopwatches for yacht timing

Flick through the Heuer archives and you’ll find special stopwatches designed for yacht racing dating back all the way to the 1930s. While the numbers for minutes and seconds on a standard stopwatch count ‘up’, that is they move clockwise from 5-10-15 up to 50-55-60, the minutes and seconds on a yacht timer count ‘down’. Rather than counting up to 60 minutes, the standard yachting timer counts down exactly 5 minutes. The period for the pre-race signals in a yacht race. The numbers for seconds on Heuer’s yachting timers count ‘down’, with the numbers for seconds printed on the dial moving clockwise from 60-55-50 down to 15-10-5.

1949 - the rise of the Solunar

Apart from the countdown to the start of a race, yacht racers also benefit from knowing the times for high tides and low tides. In 1949, Heuer introduced the first wristwatch with a permanent tide indicator. In addition to the three standard hands to indicate the hour, minutes and seconds, the Solunar had a colorful inset disc to show the tide times. Upon arriving at a specific location, sailors, racers, or fishermen could check the local tide charts and use a pusher to set the tide disc.

This disc then inched forward soon after midnight each day to indicate the times for the high and low tides for the following day. The Solunar laid the groundwork for the development of the Heuer chronographs of the future, which would also incorporate the tide disc.  The origin story of the Solunar is as thrilling as the timepiece itself. You can hear all about it in Season 2 of our podcast A Matter of Time .

Despite its innovative and eye-catching design, our archives suggest that Solunar wasn’t an easy sell. Here’s a quote from a piece of correspondence between Heuer and its then partner Abercrombie & Fitch: ‘This Solunar watch is a big hit, but it also has a big flaw. To sell it you need a “how to set and how to handle it” explanation. Despite a superb color leaflet, the explanation is too complicated, and the sellers in the shops prefer to sell simple watches.’

1950 to 1954 - a new wave of tide chronographs

The Solunar was a three-hand watch (hours, minutes and seconds) with a special tide dial. And it paved the way for a series of chronographs that would incorporate this same type of tide dial in a three-register chronograph, with the capacity to record up to 12 hours. The minute recorder was divided into five-minute segments, making the chronographs especially useful for yacht races. These watches were made over a period of two decades, first as the Heuer Mareograph and Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer, with the Orvis Solunagraph joining the line-up circa 1970. Each of these chronographs sailed forth to become a collector’s item.

When these chronographs first arrived in 1950, Heuer seems to have felt the need to explain how they worked, so customers could better understand the benefits of owning a watch with a tide indicator. Here’s an advertisement for the Mareograph. It came with two separate sections that explained how you could use the timepiece for yachting as well as fishing and hunting.

1957 - the Ring-Master

While the wristwatches with tide indicators made waves, Heuer introduced an entirely new type of yacht timer in 1957: the Heuer Ring-Master. The Ring-Master stopwatch came with seven interchangeable rings, allowing the owner to quickly install different rings to time different events, like boxing, football and many other sports. Each of the rings were a different color, with different markings. The bright yellow Ring 1 was perfect for yacht racing as it was marked for a countdown of minutes and seconds.

1959 - the Giant

Towards the end of the fifties, Heuer made revolutionary changes in its approach to yacht timers. A great example of this is a stopwatch that was listed as ‘The Giant’. First, instead of the five minutes to the start of the race being shown on a relatively small recorder occupying only a fractional area of the dial, the track marking the minutes covered almost the entire area of the dial. This track was marked for five minutes, and each of the one-minute segments was a different color. The case diameter increased from the previous standard 49mm up to 57mm, with the case also having a white enamel coating.

1964 to 1967 - the Aquastar years

Aquastar was founded in 1962 as a subsidiary of Jean Richard, an established Swiss maker at the time. It became well-known for making watches for use in and on the water. The Regate set sail in 1964 as a watch specifically designed for timing the start of a yacht race. This model’s defining characteristics are five circular apertures across the top of the dial. Graced with a rotating disk, they give the appearance of five red balls that represent the minutes being counted down. The dial on this watch is signed ‘Aquastar’ and ‘Heuer’. Aquastar produced the watch and Heuer distributed it. By 1976 Heuer would have its own branded ‘Regatta’ countdown watches that used the same style of circular apertures. But Heuer’s examples typically timed 10-minute periods, using five red circles and five blue circles.

1964 - for every kind of skipper

Heuer was beginning to harness the potential, and versatility, of yacht timers. The watchmaker began using advertorials to persuade ‘skippers’ from different walks of life to embrace these pieces.

1966 – the Navia goes sailing

Heuer had been making dashboard clocks since the 1930s. The hallmarks of these pieces were their 8-day capacity and rugged cases and movements that could withstand racing, rallying or aviation. Named the ‘Master Time’ in 1958, by the mid-1960s Heuer had modified the dashboard clock to be useful at sea. The ‘Navia’ (referring to ‘naval’ and ‘aviation’) incorporated a waterproof case and offered superb legibility, with Heuer advertising that it was perfect for the open cockpit of a boat.

We arrive at the historic moment that inspired Heuer to leave a lasting mark on the sailing world: the America’s Cup in September 1967. Heuer supplied timing equipment for the legendary racing yacht Intrepid , including Heuer-Aquastar wristwatches and handheld yacht timers. Not far from the shores of Newport, Rhode Island, the Intrepid stormed to victory. To commemorate skipper Emil Mosbacher’s triumph, Heuer produced an entirely new chronograph, the iconic Reference 7754.

The first Heuer ‘Skipper’ used a bright blue, green and orange dial. It was given a Carrera case, with the 30-minute recorder of the Carrera replaced by a 15-minute countdown recorder. This timepiece is highly coveted by vintage Heuer collectors and people with a passion for sailing. This first version would live a very short life. Only a few hundred pieces were created. And then the Skipper chronograph would move to the ‘compressor’ case of the Autavia. The name ‘Skipper’ would live on through several other versions through the 1970s and 1980s.

1968 - how to make a strong start

By crafting cutting-edge yacht timers, Heuer enabled teams to not only make a good start, but also a flying finish. Heuer was so dedicated to yacht racing enthusiasts that the brand created catalogs with tips on how to make a good start.

1970 - winning hearts

While the Skipper was making waves for chronograph enthusiasts, Heuer yacht timers continued to be marketed among Heuer’s precision instruments ‘for sports, industrial, scientific applications.’ Here’s an example of an old ad published in The Sunday Oregonian. It highlights the timer’s color-coded central five-minute register.

1972 to 1974 - the rise and rise of the Skipper

The design of the Skipper chronograph evolved over the years, as it moved from the Carrera case to a series of Autavia cases. The design of the second Skipper, circa 1970, featured a black dial, an oversized countdown recorder with red, white and blue segments, The Skipper would roll on into the 1970s in the C-shaped cases used by the Autavias, with a variety of manual and automatic configurations, but always with the emblematic 15-minute countdown recorder.

1974 - regulation approved

In 1973, Heuer introduced a new style of wrist stopwatch, called the ‘Supersport’.  The Regatta model, or Reference 775.915 from 1974, was an eye-catching piece, with a bright blue case and the red, white and blue segments on the dial corresponding to the colors used on many of Heuer’s yacht timers. This version of the Supersport was marketed as ‘a wrist speedometer built on the basis of International Yacht Racing Union regulations’.

1978 - style and substance

Crafted to be durable at sea, the Heuer yacht timer Reference 503.915 was housed inside a lightweight shockproof fiberglass case to withstand the elements (and look good doing it). Heuer called this its ‘Fibershell’ case.  At 62mm across the case, this yacht timer was easy to grip (being larger than even The Giant, from 1959), while the unique shape of the case ensured that the sailor would have a ‘safe, sure grip’ under any conditions.

1983 - regatta royalty

Heuer had offered ‘Regatta’ wristwatches in the 1960s and 1970s, but in 1983 the Regatta moved to a dramatic new series of cases, borrowed from the Autavia. At over 42mm across the dial, the cases were coated in either black, olive or pewter. Each Regatta was graced with colored discs (red and blue) to countdown two 5-minute sequences. The other, even more colorful, wrist yacht timers gaining in popularity were the Reference 503.512 and the Heuer Surfer.

1983 to 1986 - time for action

‘Time for action’ was TAG Heuer’s call to action in the 1980s. The tagline was stamped across several catalogs at the time, showcasing the brand’s wide range of versatile timing equipment that attracted sporting professionals and enthusiasts from across the world. From motor racing to athletics to, of course, sailing. The 1983 catalog featured the final version of the Skipper as we knew it then, housed in a large version of the Autavia case.

1990 to 2014

By releasing yacht timers like the TAG Heuer Searacer (in the late 1990s), the Aquaracer Calibre S Regatta (circa 2005) and the limited edition TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500 Meter Countdown Chronograph for Team Oracle USA at the 2013 America’s Cup, the brand continued its steady relationship with sailing.

2023 - a return to the high seas

Today TAG Heuer is once again expanding its horizons and reconnecting with its sailing DNA. Through its new partnership with Flying Nikka – a racing yacht at the leading edge of high-performance sailing technology – the brand is back sailing the high seas at the highest level.

2023 - the comeback king

This year also marks the return of the legendary Skipper . Reminiscent of the unforgettable 1968 Heuer Skipper, this new iteration is yet another exhilarating landmark, further strengthening TAG Heuer’s bond with the ocean. A relationship that began almost 100 years ago, in the 1930s, but will undoubtedly last forever.

Gary King has shocking Below Deck Sailing Yacht reunion

Gary Below Deck Sailing Yacht confessional

Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Gary King had a very unexpected and surprising reunion this week.

Ahead of Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Gary has been taking time to travel.

Gary has been traveling all around Australia, and apparently, Alli carved out some time for him.

The two have a history after catching feelings for each other in Season 2, but in true Gary fashion, he messed it up by having sex with Deckand Sydney Zaruba.

It was a big mess because Sydney also had a thing for Gary, who kept saying they were just friends, only to have his flirty ways come out when drinking, which led to problems with Alli.

Despite the past drama, it was smiles all around for this Below Deck Sailing Yacht reunion.

“Well this has been an absolute treat lovely see you again @allidoreporfavor,” he wrote across the picture.

Gary King and Alli Dore IG Story

That’s not the only Below Deck Sailing Yacht reunion Gary has had in the past few weeks either.

Gary King reunites with two Below Deck Sailing Yacht fan favorites

In February, Gary was in Los Angeles, where he spent time with Captain Glenn Shephard and Chef Marcos Spaziani. The three men enjoyed a night out on the town, with Marcos sharing his happiness for the reunion on Instagram.

“Amazing to catch up with you guys !!! @capt_glennshephard and @king_gk Hope to see you guys soon ❤️❤️ #catchup #goodvibes #goodtimes #sailors #boysnigt #LA #CA #cheflife #funtimes,” the chef captaion the funny photo.

Gary popped up in the comments section of the IG post to share his excitement about hanging out with his pals.

“So good seeing you guys xoxo ❤️❤️,” he wrote.

Gary commented on Marcos IG post

It’s believed that Gary and Captain Glenn were in LA to film confessionals for the upcoming season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

Here’s what we know about Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5

As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Captain Glenn recently teased Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 by using a nice throwback photo to his days as a bosun.

Meanwhile, the jury is still out on just how big of a role Gary will have in the upcoming season because of the sexual assault allegations that came out after filming wrapped. Gary was removed from BravoCon after the claims made headlines.

We know Daisy Kelliher will be back for another season of the sailing show, so the aftermath of her falling out with Gary from Season 4 should be a pretty big storyline.

In other Below Deck news, some fans think another spin-off is in the works, and you can read all about that here.

What do you think of Gary and Alli’s little reunion?

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is currently on hiatus on Bravo. Seasons 1-4 are streaming on Peacock.
