The 136-room Sunborn London is an upper-mid-range hotel in the form of a 394-foot super yacht moored in London's Royal Victoria Dock. Rooms are pleasant, surprisingly spacious, and most have views over the water, though decor is more cruise liner than luxury yacht. Some rooms have spacious decks and big soaking tubs; all have coffeemakers, minibars, and flat-screen TVs. Eating and drinking options are solid though lack of fitness facilities feels like an oversight. Overall, for maritime enthusiasts with business in the area it's perfect, but tourists wanting to explore the capital's attractions should look elsewhere. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

An upper-mid-range floating hotel set on a super yacht .

The Sunborn London is not only the capital's only floating hotel, it's the only one occupying a 394-foot super yacht. Built without an engine, however, it was towed from its native Finland and opened as upper-mid-range water-based lodgings in 2014. From the outside -- with its sleek marine lines -- it looks every inch the luxury vessel. Inside , however, the look and feel is deliberately more traditional, with polished brass railings, teakwood paneling, and the occasional nautical touches across all five of its floors. The resulting vibe is certainly more cruise ship (albeit an attractive one) than billionaire's playground. There's plenty of outside space on deck for enjoying the surrounding docks -- if not the most attractive of views -- accompanied by the sound of planes taking of and landing at the nearby City Airport. A solid pick for the novelty factor and for guests with business at the nearby conference center, this hotel is a bit far from main tourist attractions.

Moored in Royal Victoria Dock to the east of London's Canary Wharf

The hotel is permanently moored in the London ’s Royal Victoria Dock in the Docklands area in the east of the capital. The city's largest conference and events venue -- the Excel Center -- is located right opposite while the DLR (Dockland's Light Railway) station of Custom House is just minutes away on foot. From here it's just about 15 minutes by train to London's business district of Canary Wharf. While it's not ideally located for tourists, public transport links to the city center in around half an hour. City Airport however is right nearby and takes less than 10 minutes by car. 

Relatively spacious rooms with Sony tablets and Lavazza coffeemakers

The hotel's 136 rooms are certainly a lot larger than your average cruise ship cabins, but all follow cruise liner styling with plenty of polished teak, brass trim, and maritime touches. Unlike a cruise ship, all rooms are outward facing and most have large picture windows overlooking the water (some have small furnished balconies too). Amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs plus sitting areas, and a Sony tablet for web browsing and ordering room service. Lavazza coffeemakers and minibars with free water also come standard. Clean, well-maintained bathrooms provide wall-mounted hairdryers, walk-in showers, and Molton Brown products. The top-end Yacht Executive Suite we saw had its own private sauna and large balcony.

Restaurant and terrace with water views, free Wi-Fi, and a small spa with massage treatments

The hotel's Lands End restaurant provides a pleasant space awash with mirrored glass and teak paneling with large windows overlooking the water. A la carte and set breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus are served with British, Asian, and Mediterranean influences. The adjoining bar provides house cocktails, snacks, and meals as well as an outdoor terrace with views of Canary Wharf and the O2 arena. A small spa also provides a range of massage treatments though there are no fitness facilities on-site. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

From marriage proposals to Nightingale staff beds, the Sunborn is here for the Royal Docks

The Sunborn London Yacht Hotel strikes quite the pose against the Royal Docks landscape, with its white hull pointed east as if ready to set sail. But luckily the Sunborn is here to stay, permanently moored at the Royal Victoria Dock as a beloved Royal Docks landmark.

Kudos to the Sunborn: being onboard it feels a lot like being at sea. Francisco Ventura, the general manager of the Sunborn London Yacht Hotel, says he’s had people get fully caught up in the seafaring theme: “I’ve had people ask, when the boat is leaving?” But the Sunborn is secured to the dock with two giant brackets, and if you feel like it’s swaying, that’s probably just part of the illusion.

Raising the roof for the Royal Docks

The Sunborn is a choice spot in the Royal Docks for celebrating special moments. The yacht arrived in Royal Victoria Dock in 2014, when the roof was quite literally raised in order to bring it here: “The Sunborn doesn't fit under the bridge!” Francisco is pointing out the window to the Royal Victoria Bridge, a looming fixed object. To get the Sunborn under, the roof was taken off the boat, and the dock water was dropped by a metre. “The yacht only cleared the bridge by half a metre, so it was very close,” says Francisco.

“When’s the boat leaving?”

General manager Francisco assures us that this Royal Docks landmark is here to stay.

During the pandemic, the Sunborn stepped up by becoming an important support site for people working at the ExCeL Nightingale Hospital. “ISS, the facilities company in charge of the Nightingale Hospital, held 80 bedrooms here, for their logistics staff,” says Francisco. He points towards the restaurant area. “That was our canteen for the people who were working at the hospital. We set it up so it was one table with one chair, all in a row and spread out so no one was in close contact.”

Today the Sunborn is full of people who’ve arrived to spend the night in a floating hotel, or locals who’ve arrived to have a meal or drink with a view. Those spending the night will wake up in the morning to a striking blue expanse of water. “Being here is like when you go on holiday on a boat, and you wake up and open your curtain and you're looking at the water. You feel like you’re on the coast but actually, you're in the centre of London,” says Francisco. “This makes this place really unique.”

Francisco says they have always had a lot of visitors from ExCeL events, Formula E and triathlons, plus a lot of leisure business. Since the pandemic, most visitors have come from around the UK, but Francisco expects the foreign quotient to improve once international travel becomes easier again. But one thing that’s never changed is that people come from near and far to have a special night out at this unique floating hotel.

An award-winning boutique hotel

Our visit to the Sunborn comes as the yacht hotel has been awarded Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel for 2021 at the 28th World Travel Awards, which commends hotels that consistently excels beyond expectations. The Sunborn beat twelve other contenders from Portugal, Malta, Greece, Turkey and Italy in the boutique category, which highlights hotels that demonstrate innovation as they take customer expectations to new highs.

A creative and personalised approach is certainly part of the Sunborn DNA. “For us, to be boutique is more than just providing a level of service that you can't provide in a massive hotel. We try to keep a level of personal service as much as possible, and watch out for what people might be looking for,” says Francisco.

Rising to the occasion

The Sunborn is the local choice for something special – even hosting marriage proposals.

Sometimes, that means putting on a special service, like last weekend when they arranged for a celebratory dinner in a private suite following a marriage proposal. “We’ve also had someone who booked the Sky Lounge and had massive letters put up there, spelling out ‘marry me’. That was really cool. After the proposal their friends arrived and they had a party with drinks and food.”

From Finland to the docks – three times

Custom built in Finland, the Sunborn yacht hotel was brought to the Royal Docks by tugboat. It’s seaworthy but it doesn’t have an engine, having surrendered that space to fitting in six floors of 138 surprisingly large hotel rooms, as well as a restaurant, a bar, event space, meeting rooms, and a sky lounge. “The fourth floor has our restaurant. Especially in summer people like to have dinner outside,” says Francisco. “We are very proud of our views here, and there's something very calming about being on water,” says Francisco. “You feel like you’re somewhere on the coast but actually, you're in the centre of London.”

The deck enjoys sweeping views and is the perfect spot for a drink in warmer weather.

The current yacht is actually the second Sunborn in the Royal Docks. The first one, which arrived in 2003, was located on the other side of the Royal Victoria Bridge. “Back then, this probably felt a bit too far east. But now, we’re no longer too far east. The centre has moved towards the east,” says Francisco. “Now you constantly see people walking around the dock, and there’s lots of families, and people who come to concerts and events. With the Mayor coming, we’re really starting to feel like we’re at the centre of things.”

Soon, there will be a third Sunborn yacht coming, replacing the current one – it will be bigger and far more environmentally friendly. The new Sunborn will also lead to new jobs: “We try and recruit people from the area, as it connects us to the community,” says Francisco – just over 100 people work at the Sunborn today. “We expect the new Sunborn will arrive here in autumn of 2023,” says Francisco, adding that the extra size will be in width and length but not height – they still need to get it under that bridge.

Location and the novelty of staying on a cruise liner

Overall, this was fine accommodation for London with good access to the metro system and numerous restaurants. It's located in a fun area and staying on a boat is always a unique experience. We liked waking up and looking out our window to see the people kayaking and swimming in the river.

room was fantastic, room was very hot even with the AC on full, however it was very hot outside that weekend. breakfast was fantastic, views off the rear of the boat were lovely especially sipping a nice cold beer whilst watching the watersports.

The breakfast was a nice touch. The rooms were quiet. Overall, it was a fun experience, but I would not probably book it again just because it felt a little confining with no window to open, and the rooms were only accessible by elevator.

Property is perfect for the conference center. rooms are big and spacious. Breakfast is good.

Permanently moored at Royal Victoria Dock, the financial center of Canary Wharf and the City are in easy access as if the celebrated O2 centre which hosts the biggest concerts and exhibitions. Stunning views. Soup was hangin.

I did the Radisson cruise in March 2013, I hadn't quite realised it was a full on floating restaurant, I had thought it was a regular sight-seeing trip. That said I only had a soup which wasn't very nice, but you can just have drinks. There isn't any commentary or explanation of the sights your seeing - but that doesn't take away from being a great experience. Its good value for money as it takes 2.5 hours. If you're not staying there its worth having a look inside the lobby of the Radisson Royal where this cruise sets off from ... not many hotels with a Rolls Royce showroom in the reception!

Me and my girlfriend opted for the evening cruise (8-10.30pm) from the Radisson royal flotilla which is tight next to the hotel on the main road. We arrived half an hour before departure and were allowed to board straight away and were shown to a table next to the window in the restraunt. The menu itself isn't the biggest however it is only a boat so I wasn't expecting it to be that big. There was a good choice of both alcoholic, and non-alcoholic drinks. With it only being mid-week the boat wasn't full but there was still a good atmosphere on board. The boat itself is very nice, well decorated, and very clean. You don't need to dress up to much and if you see fit can almost wear casual clothing...it was -18 when we went so we opted for boots, jeans, and a thick jumper!!! the cruise itself is very nice, sails along the river at a nice gentle speed passing all the tourist attractions perfect for picture taking. The only negative which we personally had about the cruise was with regards to the on board photographer!!! she seemed nice, and friendly however she was slightly intrusive...she would come to your table, and without asking start taking pictures with the flash in your face as your trying to eat. I told her we didn't want any photographs however she continued to snap away and we had to battle through the language barrier to tell her no. All in all though we enjoyed the cruise, the price was very reasonable, and would recommend it if your visiting Moscow.

We have been on this twice, and both times have loved it. The food is ok (but you don't have to eat), the drinks are ok and reasonably priced. The boats are immaculately clean and very well looked after. and at 900 roubles each, I consider the tickets cheap. Its a great way of seeing the sights in Moscow and is of, in my opinion a rather better standard than i've experienced in other cities. Apparently they do a night Jazz cruise from Gorky Park on thursdays which is supposed to be great. A 'must do' for visitors to Moscow

I am a big fan of experiencing cities from the waterways that run through them. In my opinion, it's a must do for every city that offers the option. We did the cruise at night and had a great time. We didn't know that it was a dining option only, so we were a little bit surprised when we had no choice but to be seated at a table to dine. I thought that it was optional. We took a late night river cruise, so we had dinner with friends before that and it was a bit awkward ordering only drinks and an appetizer. They offer you to sit outside if you don't want to dine, but on a cold September night that's not really an option. Other than that, it's a great way to see Moscow at night. Next time we are going to reserve the midday option and eat lunch while cruising. It would be nice to be able to take some pictures from the top deck during day light. It's a great activity overall!

Have been on this cruise for a few times by now mainly with visitors. Great cruise and great yacht. You can buy tickets over internet, vending machines and ticket offices (quite convenient having the development level of Moscow). Food is good but nothing special. Great if you want to make great pictures of Moscow (in front of St. Basels, Red Squire and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior) Could be quite chilly if you stay on the upper deck to make pics and see Moscow (even it is +25C outside) Good value for money.

The cruises gives you a wonderful opportunity to see some of the most spectacular parts of Moscow in a relaxed way, floating along the river. Food and drinks are served, but alas, the entrees are not of high quality, and definitely not worth the price. The cruise itself, however, was well worth the money, especially the one we took in the evening.

At Sunborn London we value traditions and believe in importance of knowledge of the local heritage. Therefore we have named our restaurant Lands End – the name given to Victoria Docks area by George Bidder in 1840’s.

It was in the mid-1800s that the Victoria Docks came to life. In 1847 the well-known Victorian engineer George Bidder completed his railway from Stratford to North Woolwich. This new line was south of Canning Town followed the line of what is now Silvertown Way and North Woolwich Road, was called “Bidders Folly” because it passed through completely undeveloped marshland. George Bidder sensed the potential of the area and soon he had bought up the whole of the marshes between Bow Creek and Galleons Reach. He called the area “Lands End” and soon his investment was showing a handsome return as the land was sold for the docks and for a belt of factories along the River.
