Leopard 40 catamaran.

The recently redesigned Leopard 40 sports an increased interior volume and modern interior layout. A unique saloon to bow access door gives easy access for sunbathing and chilling out on the deck. With a bright and uncluttered design and a helm with excellent visibility, the Leopard 40 provides the safety expected for the bluewater lifestyle in a comfortable package.

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

Designed and built by South African firm Robertson & Caine and along with Naval Architects Simonis-Voogd, the Leopard 40 attempts to set a new standard for cruising catamarans. Based on customer and owner feedback, the most recent Leopard 40 has a redesigned configuration. As an evolution of the Leopard 39 design, the increase in hull volume, innovative interior layout, and enlarged windows and doors give the impression of a much larger catamaran.

The aft cabins have been redesigned and now have semi-island berths, improved access steps, recessed LED strip lighting as well as more space overall than the previous version. Within the owner’s suite, the desk and storage units have been repositioned to allow for a more refined and practical layout.

Short-handed sailing is made easy as all lines run back to the helm, all within reach, and with an electric winch for convenient control. The helm offers superb visibility to all corners of the boat and is easily accessible from the cockpit and deck. The cockpit has a full hardtop cover and a hard Bimini protecting the helm station. One of the biggest drawcards of this model is the forward access door at the front of the saloon, which accesses a semi-covered outdoor lounge area, perfect for relaxing and watching the world go by.

The Leopard 40 is available in two versions, a three cabin and two head version, or a four cabin and two head version. Customizable with your choice of interior and exterior colors, as well as a comprehensive list of optional equipment from reputable brands, the Leopard 40 can be outfitted to suit your intended sailing method and lifestyle.

The well thought out design of the Leopard 40 provides the comfort and safety expected for the Bluewater lifestyle. The deck is clear and uncluttered, hatches are finished flush, and numerous grab handles are well positioned for safe sailing.

The Leopard 40 has a forward deck area accessible from the saloon, but unlike the larger boats by Leopard , this area is not a dedicated cockpit. Although, with the addition of some cushions, the area would make a great space to lounge when the sun is shining from aft and it does provide some shade with the extended brow / louvre. There is good under-deck storage in the foredeck area where the optional generator is stowed. Ample space is available on the deck suitable to store your favorite watersports equipment, such as paddleboards and kayaks.

Handholds are installed along the entire top of the cabin, providing safe access to and from the deck. However, the steps that provide access to the cabin top are challenging, especially if the area is wet. The sail controls are simple, and the helm station is raised to provide an excellent position to sail from and to simply enjoy the views.

The latest model, Leopard 40 has a reinvented saloon and galley with an open-air concept that is a fusion of the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The large forward window and access door, combined with the sliding windows and doors aft provide occupants an almost all-round view from the saloon. While the smoke grey-tinted saloon windows and rectangular side windows, give the catamaran a very modern look.

The internal volume of this catamaran has been maximized by the design that incorporates vertical sides to the saloon. The saloon lounge is L shaped and located against the aft sliding windows, it contributes to the large open space feeling, and the saloon and cockpit areas become one. The generous interior dining area can seat eight comfortably, and the dining table converts into an additional double berth.

The oversized vertical forward window and door to access the bow area increase the natural light in the interior. The galley in the latest model has been relocated, facing forward beside the foredeck door, and is also an L shaped configuration. The modern galley is well finished and supplied complete with large Corian countertops, deep stainless steel sink, front-opening energy-saving fridge/freezer, and a three burner stovetop and oven.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Leopard 40 is available with either a 3 or 4 cabin layout. The increased volume in the hulls is noticeable in the generous size of the cabins and berths, with both layouts providing excellent comfort in all cabins with ample storage lockers. In addition, the light interior fit out in the owners, and guest cabins add to the open and airy feeling.

The three cabin layout has two guest cabins in the port hull, sharing a good-sized head complete with shower. The owner’s cabin fills the entire starboard hull. The spacious berth is situated aft and comes complete with a vanity table/desk and adequate storage space. It also has a sliding entry door for privacy. A private head and shower are located forward in the hull in the owner’s version. And this private head and shower are replaced by an additional double berth in the four cabin version.

Leopard 40 Prelude Listed For Sale

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • February 29, 2024

Brokers at The Moorings Yacht Brokerage have listed the 2018 Leopard 40 Prelude for sale. The asking price on the sailing catamaran is $385,000, with the boat currently located in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia, in the Caribbean.

Prelude is expected to phase out from The Moorings charter fleet in December, when the boat will “be ready to sail away” in time to enjoy a good part of the remaining winter sailing season, according to the company. Temperatures at that time of year tend to hover around the mid-80s, with December marking the start of the busiest tourist months on St. Lucia. People come from near and far to hike and photograph the towering Pitons, which are a must-see landmark in the Caribbean islands.

Prelude is laid out as a three-stateroom owners’ version of the Leopard 40, with a lighter ash interior and air conditioning to keep the owners and guests cool, even in the heat of the tropics.

The builder of the Leopard brand, Robertson & Caine in South Africa, is well known to sailors around the world. Naval architecture on Prelude is by Simonis and Voogd, working with Robertson & Caine’s design team.

In terms of the layout, Prelude has a forward galley with a forward-facing settee for window views of the surroundings during morning coffee or brunch. Nearby is an access door to the boat’s forward platform.

The salon opens through sliding glass doors to the cockpit aft, allowing for easy communication and traffic flow inside and out. With the doors open, the fresh air flows, helping to create an indoor-outdoor experience.

Power plants aboard Prelude are Yanmar 3YM30 AEs. Electronics are by Raymarine with a Fusion stereo system. The fully battened mainsail, furling genoa and lazy bag are by Ulman, with winches from Lewmar and headsail roller furling by Profurl. The steering wheel is by Edson, with a Delta primary anchor and a Danforth secondary anchor.

Electrical equipment includes a Victron Centaur 40A battery charger, along with a 6 kW Northern Lights generator. In addition, the boat has two 70-watt Sunware solar panels.

Want to try before you buy? A charter from The Moorings base in St. Lucia can include the Martinique Rum Experience, adding factory tours and land excursions to the sailing fun around the islands. St. Lucia is considered an ideal destination for all types of sailors, with straightforward navigation.

BUILDERS REMARKS : The Leopard 40 features a unique, modern design thanks to experienced naval architects Simonis and Voogd as well as Robertson & Caine's design team. She resembles her predecessors in speed, agility, and blue-water performance, but her enhancements include an increased hull volume and an innovative interior layout.  Like the rest of the Leopard line the new Leopard 40 includes a light blonde interior with a light, modern and airy feel. However, her interior salon layout is unlike any Leopard before her. Her galley is located forward and the forward-facing settee and table are now located aft. This allows for a panoramic view with large sliding glass doors between the saloon and the aft cockpit. This arrangement promotes easy communication for guests and an open flow between the saloon and the aft cockpit, creating a fusion of indoor and outdoor living space.

In addition, the galley area includes a large forward-facing window and an access door to the forward platform of the boat. The access door enhances the open concept feel and easy navigation in and around the yacht. It also promotes ventilation throughout the interior. The raised helm station is accessible from the cockpit and side deck, allowing for easy shorthanded sailing and keeping the helmsman close to family and friends. With more than 1000 sq. ft of sail area and an optimized hull design, like all Leopard Catamarans, the Leopard 40 is built to a high standard of speed and agility.  You can customize your Leopard 40 with a choice of interior and exterior coloring as well as an extensive list of options and equipment from industry-leading suppliers to suit your needs underway, crossing oceans, on the dock or at anchor.

Leopard 40 Owner Completes an Atlantic Crossing

Eel-where-790x400

There is no such thing as a weekend when you live on a boat,” Leopard 40 owner, Eel, explains, and we would have to agree.  There is nothing quite as liberating as knowing that you could go anywhere in the world at the drop of a hat.

And while Eel and co. are set up for success in the Mediterranean for the time being, he has accomplished a fair amount in his short time of ownership.

“Eel Where” was purchased on Valentine’s Day at the Miami International Boat Show, and it has been an adventure ever since. “I recently completed my first Atlantic crossing. I set sail on May 21 st and arrived in Lisbon on June 21 st . This was my first time crossing the Atlantic. Stopping along the way, it took one week to arrive in Bermuda, and two more weeks to reach the Azores, then another week of sailing and we had arrived in Lisbon. Straight from there to we were off to Gibraltar for a day, and then on Sardinia we spent time in Carloforte. From there we stopped in Rocella Ionica, Italy for fuel, and finally straight over to Missolonghi, Greece, where we arrived on July 7 th .”

Eel provided us with an image which shows the Leopard 40 sailing at 13 knots. Eel also shared that at one point during the crossing they endured 40 knots of wind in 20 foot seas! “After crossing the Atlantic, my definition of rough has changed. We were able to cover about 150 miles per day, give or take.  We have a satellite so I am able to get the weather at any time, and some of those storms were huge!  It was not too crazy rough for very long, but there were times when we were rolling for days at a time. But you just keep moving along. You set the point of sail and base everything off of the weather. We were able to really hit some sweet spots,” Eel described. And if his Atlantic crossing sounds like the trip of a lifetime, that is because it was. His future plans are to continue eastward. “EEL Where” is currently located in the Ionian Sea, just off the coast of Greece, but the Leopard 40’s position is always moving.

While we all love the idea of living aboard and roaming the world, the majority of people who plan on living aboard also need a steady income or savings in order to live out their dreams, and we believe that Eel has perfected the art of this. He is the owner of a software company and works daily. Eel Explains, “My boat is my home and office. With my satellite dish, I was able to work all the way across the Atlantic. I have a radar, and the catamaran allows for 360 degree views. The distance from where I work to the helm is very close. If I want to emerge to feel the wind at the helm, all I have to do is move 6 feet. I will be in an air-conditioned work environment, and within seconds move into and exhilarating water-filled adventure.” And what’s the best advice he can offer to someone who is considering working aboard? “Always face forward,” Eel Recommends.

As for advice for anyone who is currently in search of a new yacht, Eel suggests the following: “Know your voltage and know where you are planning to sail it. If you are planning on ever sailing to Europe make sure you get both voltages put on board because sometimes you just want to plug in. Also, if you plan on going to the Med make sure you get Med Moor training. I was fortunate to get it right on my first try, but if you don’t put enough chain out you can lose your anchor.” He also suggests adding a few items, “Two electric winches help with single-handling the boat. My satellite and solar panels are used every day. And my code zero has been a lot of fun.”  And his best advice of all? He suggests, “Don’t let your boat sit in the harbor!”

New for 2018, Leopard Catamarans is excited to announce the new enhancements to the successful Leopard 40.

Leopard models. Taking into careful consideration the feedback that we received from our customers and owners, the 2018 model of the Leopard 40 has been given an even more spacious owner's cabin, with some additional upgrades.

Continuing in the pursuit of innovation while taking into consideration customer and owner feedback, the 2018 model of the Leopard 40 now features aft cabin reconfigurations that offer more space below for added comfort.

The redesigned aft cabins now boast semi-island berths, access steps, concealed strip lighting under shelves, berths, and ceiling fixtures, and more overall space than the previous Leopard 40. The owner suite desk and storage units were intelligently rearranged within the suite to allow for a more refined layout. This new layout further expands upon the open air concept of the Leopard Catamarans line.

The owner suite desk and storage units were intelligently rearranged within the suite to allow for a more refined layout. This new layout further expands upon the open air concept of the Leopard Catamarans line.

The port aft cabin also underwent the same reconfiguration less the owner cabin desk arrangement.

Staying true to the Leopard legacy of open concept designs, they were able to accomplish this renovation without compromising any interior living space, one of the most loved features of the Leopard line. The Leopard 40 still offers more interior living space than any other catamaran of similar size, and no other yacht in this class of sailing catamarans boasts the speed, agility, or blue water performance that the Leopard 40 can.
