Engine Noises You Should Not Ignore

Does it ever feel like you need to be a sound expert to figure out what’s wrong with your car? With all the moving parts, there is a lot that can go wrong. From squealing to grinding, it’s important you know how to discern the different sounds your car engine is making.

One part you don’t ever want any strange noises coming from is the engine. Yet, it happens, and a quick diagnosis of the problem can help you save your engine. Today, I review seven common car engine noises and show you what each means.

Car Engine Noises You Should Never Ignore

1. squealing.

Serpentine Belt Car

Is there ever a time that squealing is good, even outside of the automotive realm? If you hear a squeal coming from under the hood, it should cause alarm. Most times, this annoying sound is related to a loose or worn-out serpentine belt.

This belt is responsible for controlling all of the engine accessories, such as the alternator and water pump . Because of its importance, you don’t want to ignore the need for a replacement.

However, there are other reasons that your car might be squealing. If it’s not coming from the engine area, but rather when you turn, your issue might be in the steering system instead. Or, if you hear squealing when you brake, you might need new brake pads.

RELATED: 7 Symptoms of a Bad Serpentine Belt

2. Tapping/Clicking

Engine Oil Level

There’s a distinctive sound that the car engine makes when the oil is low. It resembles a clicking, ticking or tapping noise. Thankfully, this condition is one of the easiest to diagnose; just take a look at the dipstick.

You can also resolve the issue easily by adding more oil. However, adding oil is a short-term fix. You still want to figure out why your car is low on oil in the first place.

Low oil can be caused by a leak, either internally or externally, as well as conditions where it is being burned up.

However, if you check the oil and everything seems fine, you might have a valvetrain problem instead. These are serious concerns that should be looked at right away.

3. Grinding

Driving Highway

There are many different car systems that can make a grinding noise, but when just focused on the engine alone, it could be due to worn-out bearings. If this is the case, you will hear the grinding sound when driving or idling.

However, a grinding noise that occurs during shifting is likely a worn-out clutch instead. Grinding can also occur when taking a turn because of a bad CV joint or another suspension-related issue.

Of course, the most notorious grinding sound occurs with the brakes when the pads are worn down. Once this sound occurs, you know that the brakes are down to the metal.

Whether you hear grinding from the engine or other car components, it’s a serious sound that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Get your car to a local service shop right away.

4. Knocking

Knocking Engine

The engine can make a distinct pinging or metallic knocking sound while driving. This condition is known as detonation knock.

This occurs when the fuel and air mixture in one of the cylinders detonates at numerous locations simultaneously. It’s possible that you put the wrong octane fuel into the system, which can cause this problem.

However, it can also be caused by a lean air and fuel mixture, poor timing, or a damaged knock sensor . All knocking noises need to be dealt with immediately before further engine damage occurs.

RELATED: 6 Causes of a Knocking or Pinging Car Engine

5. Loud Banging

Noise From Car

We’ve all heard it once in our lives – that distinctive explosion sound that reminds you of fireworks. This condition is known as a backfire. It occurs when the fuel wasn’t burned in the combustion chamber and escapes.

Once it moves beyond the combustion chamber, it combusts in the exhaust instead. Any time the fuel/air ratio becomes too rich or lean, a backfire can occur. Allowing your car to backfire only puts it at further risk of damage.

6. Hissing/Sizzling

Car Vacuum Hose Leak

If you hear a sizzling or popping sound immediately after shutting down the engine, there could be a leak. Either oil or coolant is leaking onto a hot engine component.

You might see the leak on the exhaust manifold, or it could be harder to find. It could also just be a vacuum line. Either way, the problem should be addressed immediately, especially if the engine is starting to overheat.

RELATED: 6 Symptoms of a Vacuum Leak & Causes

There are a number of conditions that cause popping sounds in the engine. Many of them will be accompanied by engine hesitation, affecting the performance of your car.

Some of the most common reasons for engine popping include a clogged fuel filter , ignition issues, fouled or dirty spark plugs, damaged plug wires or a faulty catalytic converter. Some of these fixes are simple and low-cost, while others, such as the catalytic converter, are going to be more expensive.

Repair Costs

Whatever noise you are hearing, it’s vital to have it diagnosed immediately. Otherwise, the problem could lead to irreversible engine damage. Luckily it is often enough with smaller repairs when you experience any engine noise.

If the engine becomes damaged beyond repair, you are going to need a replacement.

However, buying a new engine is quite expensive. For most people, it’s better to purchase a remanufactured engine. If you have a newer car, you will want the warranty that comes with a brand-new motor instead.

A used engine and labor will still likely run $1,500 or more. New gas engines and installation are going to be $3,000 or more. A new Ford V10 engine costs $5,000 or more. However, there are some cars that don’t cost as much. For example, a new Ford Focus engine might only be $500 for the engine, not including the labor. If you have a diesel engine, you are looking at a much higher bill.

So, let’s get started!

Table of Contents

Short Answer

To make motorboat sounds, you can either use your mouth to make a rhythmic humming sound, or you can make a similar sound using a musical instrument such as a harmonica or recorder.

You can also use a synthesizer or sampler to create the sound.

If you’re looking for a more realistic sound, you can purchase a motorboat sound effect, or record your own motorboat sound from a real motorboat.

What Is a Motorboat Sound?

A motorboat sound is a sound effect that mimics the sound of a motorboat engine.

It is often used to create a fun and exciting atmosphere at parties or gatherings.

It can also be used to add a humorous or lighthearted touch to a situation.

The sound is created by making a chugging noise in the back of the throat, then adding a lip or tongue trill to the chug to create a more realistic motorboat sound.

The speed and volume of the sound can be adjusted to create the desired effect.

With some practice, anyone can master the motorboat sound and it is sure to be a hit at any gathering!

How to Make a Chugging Noise

motorboat sound from car

Making motorboat sounds is a fun way to bring some fun and excitement to any party or gathering.

It’s an easy sound effect to master with just a few simple steps.

To make a motorboat sound, start by creating a chugging noise in the back of your throat.

Creating a chugging noise is the first step in mastering the motorboat sound.

To create the noise, you’ll need to use your tongue and throat muscles to create a rhythmic chugging sound.

Start by exhaling a steady stream of air from your throat while making a “chug” sound.

While still exhaling, move your tongue up and down, creating a vibrating sound.

This will create the chugging sound that is necessary for a realistic motorboat sound.

You can practice this chugging noise with a few simple exercises.

Start by placing the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth and quickly pushing it up and down, creating a vibrating sound.

As you become more comfortable with this, you can begin to add in the exhaling of air to create the chugging noise.

You can also practice this sound by humming or singing a song with a steady rhythm.

This will help you become familiar with the sound and help you create a realistic motorboat sound.

Once you feel comfortable with the chugging noise, you can move onto the next step in creating motorboat sounds.

Adding a Lip or Tongue Trill

To add a lip or tongue trill to your motorboat sound, start by making a chugging noise in the back of your throat.

The chugging noise will act as the base for the trill.

Once you have the chugging noise established, you can begin to add a lip or tongue trill to it.

To do this, you will need to purse your lips slightly and make a vibrating noise with the back of your tongue.

This will add a more realistic motorboat sound to your creation.

You can also play around with the speed and volume of the sound to create the desired effect.

With a bit of practice and experimentation, anyone can make a convincing motorboat sound.

Adjusting Speed and Volume

motorboat sound from car

Adjusting the speed and volume of your motorboat sound is an important step in creating a realistic effect.

To create the desired motorboat sound, start by focusing on the speed and volume of the chugging noise.

A slow, steady chugging noise will create a more mellow motorboat sound, while a faster, louder chugging noise will create a more energetic sound.

You can also adjust the speed and volume of the lip or tongue trill to create a more realistic sound.

Start with a low speed and volume and gradually increase it to create the desired effect.

Additionally, you can experiment with adding other noises such as blowing air through your lips or adding a vibrato to the sound to create a more unique motorboat effect.

With practice, you will be able to perfect your motorboat sound and create a unique effect for any gathering.

Practicing Tips

Making motorboat sounds may sound like a daunting task, but with a few helpful practice tips, it can be easy to master. Here are some tips to help you make realistic motorboat sounds:

1. Start by creating a chugging noise in the back of your throat this is the base of the sound. You should be able to feel the noise vibrating in your throat.

2. Next, add a lip or tongue trill to the chugging noise. This will create a more realistic motorboat sound and add depth and texture to the sound.

3. Once you have your basic motorboat sound down, you can start to adjust the speed and volume of the sound to create the desired effect.

4. Practice makes perfect! The more you practice making motorboat sounds, the more realistic and convincing they will be.

5. If you’re having trouble getting the sound right, record yourself making the noise and play it back to see if it sounds like a motorboat. This is a great way to troubleshoot and perfect your sound.

With some practice and a few helpful tips, you should be able to master making motorboat sounds in no time.

It’s sure to be a hit at any party or gathering!

Plus, it can be a great tool for teaching kids how to use their vocal cords and practice making different sounds.

With some practice, anyone can make motorboat sounds, and it’s sure to be a hit at any gathering!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Making motorboat sounds can be a great way to bring some fun to any party or gathering, but it can also be a bit tricky.

To make sure you get the sound just right, it is important to be aware of some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to make motorboat sounds.

The first mistake that is often made is not creating the chugging noise in the back of the throat.

The chugging sound is the base of the motorboat sound and it should be created first.

If the chug is not there, the motorboat sound will not be realistic.

Another common mistake is not adding the lip or tongue trill.

This is a necessary part of the motorboat sound and should not be overlooked.

Without the trill, the motorboat sound will not be complete.

Finally, it is important to adjust the speed and volume of the sound to create the desired effect.

If the sound is too slow or too quiet, it won’t sound like a motorboat.

It is important to practice to get the sound just right.

By avoiding these common mistakes and practicing to perfect the sound, anyone can master the art of making motorboat sounds.

With some practice, it is sure to be a hit at any gathering!

Is it a falling bowling ball? Is it an exploding car? No, it’s a frost quake.

motorboat sound from car

This story was originally published in February 2022.

There’s a lot of underground activity in Maine. Geologically speaking, that is.

Every year the state records at least one earthquake between magnitude 3 and 3.9, which is enough to swing a hanging lamp or rattle some dishes. In between there are a handful of lesser quakes.

In Maine, there are also seasonal seismic events called cryoseisms or, more commonly, frost quakes. These happen when heavily saturated ground rapidly freezes. The water in the soil expands until it starts pushing against the soil and into the cracks of rocks around it.

That pressure builds until it actually breaks the rocks or fractures the soil. When that happens it can sound like snow sliding off a roof or, as one homeowner in Nova Scotia  described, like a bowling ball being dropped on his roof.

Maine gets its fair share of frost quakes, but they rarely reach the bowling ball on the roof level, according to Henry Berry, physical geologist at the Maine Geological Survey.

When they do occur, Berry said, people often mistake them for small earthquakes.

“It’s really hard to know the difference unless you ask,” Berry said.

Mainers report ‘frostquakes’ during deep freeze

Avatar photo

Since the Maine Geologic Survey constantly records all seismic activity in the state, as long as you note the exact time you observe a sound or shake, geologists can check what was going on at that exact moment.

“You can look at our website and see if any earthquakes were reported,” Berry said. “If you want to report your observation to us, we need to know the time before we check the seismic reports because you are asking us to find a tiny wiggly line in a whole bunch of wiggly lines.”

Frost quakes tend to be very localized, according to Berry. The vibrations they create don’t travel far. But since they do occur just below the surface, they can be pretty impressive if you are right on top of one.

In 2005, a frost quake large enough to shake the ground and crack a paved driveway was reported in Limington . The homeowner said it was loud enough that he thought his car had exploded.

Frost quakes tend to happen between midnight and dawn during the coldest part of the night. If conditions are just right, there may be a series of booms over a few hours.

Those conditions need to line up just right, according to Don Dumont, warning coordinator meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Caribou.

“You need a shallow amount of snow,” Dumont said. “You need moisture in the soil and really cold, sub-zero temperatures.”

Lack of snow cover means the saturated soil has little to insulate it when very cold, arctic air rushes into the area. That creates a rapid freeze and expansion.

“You get that pressure release and it makes booms and cracks,” Dumont said. “A good analogy is when you step on your deck on a really cold morning and it cracks loudly.”

Current snow depth and meteorological conditions favor frost quakes near the coast, Dumont said.

Over time, the conditions needed for frost quakes in Maine are increasing with extreme weather events on the rise due to climate change.

“Maine winters are warming and as part of a changing climate, we are seeing a tendency for more extreme weather events,” according to Sean Birkel, Maine state climatologist at the University of Maine Climate Change Institute. “In winter this can mean patterns that bring extreme cold followed by extreme warmth.”

While there are no hard data on what it means in terms of frost quakes, Birkel said scientific observations are showing these extreme events are creating conditions they need.

“One of the factors is a warming ocean surface that increases evaporation and overall more moisture entering the atmosphere,” he said. “That means there is more moisture available for precipitation and that is, in part, fueling more rainfall.”

Berry would love to see more people reporting any suspected cryoseismic activity, given that they do not register on the seismic monitoring equipment. They can be reported through email to the Maine Geological Survey at [email protected] .

“For us to determine if there was a frost quake, we need human beings to tell us,” Berry said.

Florida deputy fires weapon after mistaking sound of acorn hitting patrol car for gunshot

Body camera footage of the November 2023 incident was recently released.

A Florida deputy is seen firing his weapon repeatedly at his patrol vehicle after mistaking the sound of an acorn hitting the roof of the car for a muffled gunshot, according to video released alongside a sheriff's office investigation.

Newly released body camera footage of the November 2023 incident shows the dramatic moments the Okaloosa County deputy shot at his patrol vehicle while a handcuffed suspect was inside.

"I'm hit! I'm hit!" the deputy, Jesse Hernandez, can be heard yelling, though no one was shooting at him.

As he stumbled to the ground, Hernandez yelled "Shots fired!" four times, according to the video and an internal investigation conducted by by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office of Professional Standards. He then opens fire on his vehicle.

A sergeant with the sheriff's office also fired her weapon multiple times at the patrol vehicle, believing Hernandez was in danger, according to the report .

PHOTO: Body-camera footage released by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office shows a deputy firing at his patrol vehicle, Nov. 15, 2023.

After the sergeant asked if he was OK, Hernandez responded, "I'm good, I feel weird but I'm good," the footage shows.

The two had responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at a residence near Fort Walton Beach on Nov. 12, 2023, according to the report. A woman reported that her boyfriend was refusing to return her vehicle and had been calling and texting her threats, including "what appeared to be a firearm suppressor pointing at the dash of the victim's vehicle," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The boyfriend was detained, searched, handcuffed and placed in the rear of Hernandez's patrol vehicle, the sheriff's office said.

While approaching the vehicle to conduct another search, Hernandez told investigators that he heard what he believed to be a "suppressed weapon off to the side," according to the report.

"At the same time, I felt an impact on my right side, like upper torso area," he said in an interview on Nov. 15, 2023, according to the report.

Hernandez and the sergeant both fired their weapons at the patrol car until their firearms were emptied, according to the report.

The boyfriend was uninjured and no weapon was located, the sheriff's office said.

PHOTO: Body-camera footage released by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office shows a deputy firing at his patrol vehicle, Nov. 15, 2023.

"The audible sound Deputy Hernandez reported can be heard on body cam video and witnesses also attested they heard the sound they thought could have been a muffled gunshot," the sheriff's office said.

During the interview, investigators informed Hernandez that what he heard was an acorn, according to the report. Asked if what he thought he heard was actually the noise of the acorn striking the roof of his patrol vehicle, Hernandez responded, "I'm not gonna say no," according to the report.

"What I heard sounded what I think would be louder than an acorn hitting the roof of the car, but there's obviously an acorn hitting the roof of the car," he said, according to the report.

The investigation determined that Hernandez's use of force was "not objectively reasonable," the sheriff's office said. He resigned during the course of the investigation on Dec. 4, 2023, nearly a year after joining the force, according to the sheriff's office.

ABC News has reached out to Hernandez for comment.

MORE: Off-duty officers kill female shooter at Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston; 2 victims injured

The sergeant's use of force was found to be "objectively reasonable" and she was exonerated, the sheriff's office said.

Both were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, according to Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden.

Aden said they "understand this situation was traumatic" for the man detained in the patrol vehicle and are "thankful" he wasn't injured. The office has incorporated this incident into their training "to try to ensure nothing similar happens again," the sheriff said.

"Though [Hernandez's] actions were ultimately not warranted, we do believe he felt his life was in immediate peril and his response was based off the totality of circumstances surrounding this fear," Aden said in a statement. "Just as we have an obligation to protect our officers so they can go home safely to their families, law enforcement has the same obligation to any citizen being investigated for a crime."

Cosworth has made a host of changes to the 3.9-liter V12, including the addition of individual throttle bodies

The track-only Gordon Murray T.50s Niki Lauda is shaping up to be quite the beast and based on a new video of the firm testing its V12 on the dyno, it will also sound unique.

Like the road-going T.50 , the T.50s Niki Lauda has a 3.9-liter naturally-aspirated V12 sourced from Cosworth. However, a series of significant changes have been made to this engine, allowing it to churn out 772 hp while revving through to 12,100 rpm. The list of upgrades also includes a higher compression ratio, revised cylinder heads, bespoke cams, a unique induction system with a roof-mounted ram intake, and the removal of the variable valve timing. Perhaps the most significant change is the fitment of 12 individual throttle bodies compared to the four throttle bodies of the street car.

The video shows what this engine sounds like while running a simulated lap around Circuit De La Sarthe in France, the track that plays host to the 24 Hours of Le Mans each year. The screaming, high-revving engine sounds like the closest thing we’ve heard since the glory days of V10 and V8-powered Formula 1 cars and makes all the latest and greatest turbocharged and battery-electric supercars and hypercars seem tame and uninspired.

A second video of the car also sheds more light on what differentiates it from the standard model. While the firm could have simply taken the T.50 , slapped on some wings, and called it a day, the T.50s Niki Lauda is almost entirely new. For example, the carbon fiber monocoque is bespoke and incorporates the new roof scoop. The bodywork is also unique, featuring thinner carbon fiber panels and no paint at all; instead, GMA has opted to wrap it.

Production of the T.50s Niki Lauda will be capped at just 25 units worldwide, and prices start at £3.1 million ($3.9 million).

The CEO of Foremost Group, Angela Chao, died in a car accident, according to several media publications.

"Angela Chao was a formidable executive and shipping industry leader, as well as a proud and loving daughter, sister, aunt, wife and mother," reads the Foremost Group statement published by Hellenic Shipping News .

In a tweet , the U.S. Coast Guard Academy called Chao a "trailblazer in the maritime industry."

Life of Angela Chao

Chao was the youngest daughter of Foremost Group's founder and honorary chairman, Dr. James S.C. Chao, the sister of Elaine Chao, former Secretary of Transportation , and the sister-in-law of Senator Mitch McConnell.

According to Chao's website , she was a Harvard graduate, earning both her undergraduate and graduate degrees there. She is also a published author on topics of economics, international trade and finance, and education.

Her case study on “Ocean Carriers,” which she wrote while attending Harvard Business School, is a part of the required curriculum for first-year business students at the school, says the Foremost Group statement.

Her company, Foremost Group, is an American shipping company based in New York.

According to Hellenic Shipping News, it "charters out some of the world’s largest and most eco-friendly ships to blue-chip clients who use the vessels to transport dry bulk products to markets around the world."

The Maritime Executive states Chao is survived by her father and her five sisters.

Ferrari's 2024 F1 car, the SF-24, debuts in Maranello

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Ferrari on Tuesday unveiled its new car developed for the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship, the SF-24.

The car is Ferrari's 70th F1 race car, and will be piloted in the new season by Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. For Sainz, it will be his last season with Ferrari as the team last week announced that seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will replace him for the 2025 season.

Serving as team principal of Ferrari's F1 team is once again Fred Vasseur.

The 2024 F1 cars follow most of the same design rules as the cars that competed last year, but some key changes have been made. In the case of the SF-24, designers were focused on making the car easier to drive and more predictable in its behaviors. Reliability was also a major focus given the record 24 races planned for the season.

The SF-24's shape has been altered substantially compared to the SF-23 it replaces , particularly around the engine cover, side pods, and front wing. According to Enrico Cardile, the technical director for the chassis, every area of the chassis has been redesigned.

The rules for power unit designs are fixed across all teams. Ferrari uses its own internally developed power unit, which in line with the rules consists of a turbocharged 1.6-liter V-6 working in combination with two motor-generators, one on the driveline and another integrated with the turbo. Haas and Sauber (competing this season as Kick Sauber) also rely on Ferrari power units.

The new car's livery features a shade of red that is common with Ferrari's LMH race car, the 499P, just like last season's design. However, the designers this season attempted to add more common elements for the livery, like introducing more yellow accents alongside the traditional white.

Pre-season testing will run Feb. 21-23 at the Bahrain International Circuit before the first race of the season, the Bahrain Grand Prix, takes place at the same location on March 2.

Popular Answer casey40510 on May 24, 2017 Hello, You very likely have an issue with a large exhaust leak at or before the muffler. Most commonly, heat and moisture combine over time to form small holes in the muffler or exhaust pipe, causing the muffler to stop... well... muffling.
