Superyacht Training: UKSA Discuss The Rise In Female Yacht Crew

uksa superyacht training

Is gender imbalance in the yachting industry improving?

UKSA is a national maritime charity, based on the Isle of Wight, with a vision to widen access to maritime training and enhance life skills and employment in the sector. We’ve been fortunate enough to speak with them and find out which Superyacht training courses they offer, and why they think they’ve seen a rise in female yacht crew applicants.

superyacht training

Q&A with James Potipher, UKSA Superyacht Cadetship Manager:

What superyacht training courses do you offer for yachties.

We offer three main courses for our Superyacht students:

1. Superyacht Cadetship program –  A four-year structured course, designed to help students obtain   employment   in  the industry . And, rise up the ranks to OOW and beyond. The first phase is an intensive five-month course that equips students with their Yachtmaster and engineering qualifications. Students will gain all the qualifications needed to become a junior Deckhand.

2. Superyacht Crew Training – An intensive three-week course. This   program   will   prepare  students  for   their first  deckhand  job on  a superyacht  by   providing   skills and qualifications . Students will come out of this course with deck work skills, powerboat licenses, and basic safety training.

3. UKSA’s intensive three-week Superyacht Interior Training course – For students looking to begin their career as a steward/stewardess. It provides all the skills and qualifications required to secure that first job onboard a superyacht. Students will come out of this course with interior skills, powerboat licenses, and basic safety training.

During each course, time is spent creating CVs, applying for jobs, and outlining what to expect. All training phases are inclusive of food and accommodation, with funding opportunities available.

What changes have you seen to course intakes since the beginning of the pandemic?

Course intakes have been steady during the pandemic. We have adapted our training to meet the rules and regulations in place. And, as an educational provider, we were able to run most of the courses as normal. A lot of our latest intakes are those who have thought about their career during the lockdowns.  And subsequently, decided on a different route.

You’ve recently seen a 150 percent increase in female applicants for your S uperyacht training cadet course. What do you think caused this?

I think the industry is changing. The number of female applicants enrolling on the Superyacht Crew Training and the Cadetship is mirrored by the way the industry is changing with time. There are a lot more opportunities available for female deckhands, providing a good entry point into the industry.

Do you think the yachting industry will be close to becoming more of a 50:50 split, rather than primarily dominated by males? Or do you think that there is still a long way to go?

Getting   to  a 50:50 split  will take some time . However, looking at the number of female applicants we’ve received, we are moving in the right direction. Will it ever be an even split? I don’t know, but I truly believe we can make the split more even in the future.

UKSA -James Potipher

How successful have female yachtie students who have finished the cadetship course been in finding their first position? Has it been difficult? and what would you say their success rate is when compared with females completing the Superyacht interior course?

There isn’t a big difference between the percentage of male to female students getting their first job after the cadetship. One of the biggest barriers to getting the first job is the rooming onboard a vessel. Generally, male students will stay in a room together. So, this can be the difficulty females experience when finding their first role. Although many boats are specifically looking for female deckhands, there are plenty of opportunities in the industry.

There’s no doubt in my mind that you’ve heard of Captain Sandy from the popular reality TV series Below Deck . Captain Sandy is a great example of a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field who has achieved incredible success. Do you think this may have had anything to do with the dramatic increase in female applicants in the Superyacht training courses?

Unfortunately, I have never watched Below Deck. But having the presence of a female captain is a positive thing. It will hopefully encourage and help more women get into the industry. Other prominent figures also show the balance is shifting. Such as Kate McCue, one of the first female captains of a mega cruise ship. And, the first all-female crew of an A380. Albeit, slowly to start with hopefully, the shift will change for the positive.

Captain Sandy - Below deck

Do you believe, that the reality TV series, Below Deck has influenced superyacht training course applications?

I personally think Below Deck has had little influence regarding our course applications. From what I hear and from my experience in the industry, what happens in the show might differ from reality. If a documentary was made showcasing my time onboard it may not match up to what occurs Below Deck. It would have been many hours scrubbing teak decks, cleaning windows, and polishing stainless steel. Which, may not be the greatest viewing. But the exposure to the Superyacht industry is always good. And, if this helps more people get into the industry, the better.

If you are a female considering starting your Superyacht training, now is your time to shine!

Female applicants are welcome on all superyacht training courses. For more information on the courses available at UKSA click here .

UKSA Superyacht Cadetship

The uksa superyacht cadetship provides a unique pathway into the superyacht industry.

The UKSA Superyacht Cadetship is a structured programme designed to train the future officers of the superyacht industry .

The cadetship combines the most relevant training and mentoring, equipping graduates with a strong foundation of knowledge and realistic understanding of the industry they are entering in to.

The four-year programme is a career path to STCW II/1 Officer of the Watch (Yacht <3000GT) and onward to STCW II/2 Master (Yacht <3000GT) qualification, and was designed in consultation with the MCA.

By combining academic study and practical paid work on superyachts, cadet graduates are now forging long term careers within this elite industry.

Working closely with leading crew agents, management companies, yacht captains and our own in-house placement service, our cadets are now employed in all areas of the sector, from private performance racing superyachts to the largest, most high-profile motor vessels.

Who is a typical cadet?

Cadets are generally aged between 18 and 25-years-old and are drawn from a variety of backgrounds. Some are experienced watersports professionals or competitive sailors and have displayed a strong work ethic from their early teens. Many have achieved success in the Sea Cadets or Scouts, or have completed their Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

Others simply have the drive and determination to succeed.

UKSA launches engineering crew training course

Training course introduced to help address skills gap….

uksa superyacht training

UKSA has launched an engineering crew training course for experienced or new crew who wish to work on small vessels or enter the superyacht industry through the engineering route.

A recent report by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) highlights the lack of competent mariners with STEM skills, specifically engineering, and UKSA has responded by launching the course for young people to provide the maritime sector with suitable trained crew.

Taught by UKSA tutors, the Engineering Crew training course takes place at its Cowes headquarters on the Isle of Wight.

The five-week course trains students in professional workshop practices, and the correct and safe use of tools and workshop equipment. It delivers the MCA Approved Engine Course 1 and 2, STCW basic safety training and powerboat training. Students also will complete the Mental Health for Seafarers course, which prepares students for the challenges of life at sea.

“At UKSA, we are developing skills for future roles and creating the next generation of crew while supporting students to ensure they have the best opportunities for career progression,” says Chris Frisby, Director of Training and Operations at UKSA. “At UKSA, our experienced and dedicated team are really excited to be offering this new engineering course which will help students start a career in the superyacht industry or wider marine industry after just five weeks.”

It is most suitable for students with some experience in engineering who are looking to transfer these skills to the maritime sector. Ideal candidates will be hands-on, highly motivated individuals with a basic knowledge of engines and using tools who want to train to be part of a crew working in challenging environments around the world.

The qualifications gained on completion of the course include the UKSA Superyacht Crew Training Certificate, MCA AEC1, MCA AEC2, MCA Workshop Skills Training, STCW Basic Safety Training, MCA Proficiency in Designated Security Duties, Mental Health for Seafarers as well as a number of RYA qualifications.

The qualifications gained through this course will also be transferable between many industries including superyachts, tugboats, workboats, standby, seismic survey, oceanographic research vessels, government patrol vessels and fishing vessels.

UKSA also offers funding opportunities to many of its students to ensure training and qualifications are accessible to anyone planning a career within yachting or watersports.

UKSA &  THE LITTLE GLOSTER

SUPERYACHT HOSPITALITY COURSE

UKSA unveils new collaboration with the team behind award-winning -

The Little Gloster for 7-star Superyacht crew training experience

uksa superyacht training

UKSA, the leading maritime education and training charity, announces a new and exclusive collaboration with the team behind award-winning – The Little Gloster Restaurant and Rooms, a famed Isle of Wight bolthole run by Ben and Holly Cooke.

As a result of the new partnership, UKSA has launched two new facilities in its training centre, a fully equipped cabin/dining room designed by The Little Gloster, alongside the superyacht galley and laundry room, giving students a comprehensive superyacht simulation experience.

The collaboration will see Ben & Holly run the Superyacht interior training of the students that have signed up for the immersive twenty one day UKSA Superyacht course. These new standards have been specially designed by industry experts, who have worked in the superyacht industry themselves, to meet the growing demand for well-trained professional crew onboard some of the world’s most luxurious yachts.

The Superyacht Hospitality course is a unique programme designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to work as a steward/stewardess in the fast-growing superyacht sector with a focus on going above & beyond industry expectations.  As part of the course, students will be trained by Ben & Holly Cooke to deliver exceptional levels of service and will leave fully appreciating the attention to detail expected onboard 7-star luxury vessels, which will set them apart from other international candidates applying for the same roles.

Over their time with Ben and Holly, they will be introduced to the world of high end hospitality including Wine & Cocktail Appreciation (including Practical and Theory based learning), Laundry and Housekeeping Skills, Event Planning, Service Skills (including Silver Service), Floristry and The Little Gloster’s Super Yacht 101 – a super yacht service philosophy developed by The Little Gloster for the course specifically, as well as other practical essentials to succeed with onboard employment. Students also receive qualifications including Food Safety, Fire Prevention and First Aid.

Chris Frisby, Director of Training and Operations at UKSA, comments: “The new collaboration with Ben and Holly further enhances our course and gives students a unique and rounded learning experience from experienced hospitality experts. The world’s most luxurious superyachts require the very best crew, and we believe this new collaboration will give our students the edge.”

Originally from the Isle of Wight, Ben completed some of his own Super Yacht Training at UKSA, undertaking the Competent Crew course before completing his powerboat licence and superyacht ticket, whilst in his twenties. Having worked in kitchens from a young age, Ben honed his skills with classical French and English chefs and went on to work with Michelin chefs from around the world including New Zealand and Sweden in various roles, including being a private chef in St Anton and Klosters.

He worked aboard superyachts for five years, cooking for Middle Eastern royalty and an adventurous private owner who avoided the usual Mediterranean destinations, opting instead for explorations to the northwest passage, Galapagos and other unique destinations across the globe, before returning to the island to set up The Little Gloster Restaurant & Rooms in 2010, shortly before meeting Holly.

After studying fine arts at the prestigious Central Saint Martins – University of the Arts in London, Holly worked in several media-based roles including roles at Tatler and Vogue before focusing on PR and Events.  Working with brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, Agent Provocateur, Matthew Williamson and Versace; Holly managed and coordinated the press launches and events in the UK and internationally (based between NYC, Milan and London), honing her skills in luxury event and brand management before meeting Ben and moving to the island to help develop The Little Gloster shortly after its launch.

After a successful ten years, with accolades including The Good Food Guide ‘Best Local Restaurant’ in the South & Overall winner across the UK, The Little Gloster, featured in the Michelin Guide, also won various awards for their beautiful seaside boutique hotel.  The duo gained a reputation nationally & internationally for going above & beyond their guest expectations, focusing on the importance of the finer details and team training, with many of their team succeeding in Superyacht roles after their time at The Little Gloster.  They now share their time between developing a new Cookery School & Food Photography/Film studio whilst also working at UKSA, specialising in the Superyacht Training Industry.

Holly comments: “We are absolutely delighted to begin a new collaboration with UKSA and impart our knowledge of the luxury hospitality sector to students. Crew will be expected to deliver exceptional levels of service and focus on the finer details, setting themselves apart from the competition.  Our aim is for students to leave the course, brimming with confidence and the skills to step aboard their first superyacht with the right attitude and skillset to succeed.

Many people come to UKSA armed with transferable skills which are advantageous to their new careers. At UKSA, an average of 80 percent of students secure a role within three months of completing their training.
