Sailboat Quilt Block Pattern

Skill Level: Beginner
This Sailboat quilt block pattern is perfect for a little boy's quilt—and not nearly the number of half square triangles to make as most Sailboat blocks.
Here we'll use a couple of quick pieced triangle squares, a couple of connector corners and join them all together. It's that simple.
Ahoy there, me-matey!
It's time for our Sailboat block to set sail!
General Instructions
If you need help printing this page, you'll find it here .
These abbreviations are used in this tutorial:
- SA - seam allowance
- RST - right sides together
- HST - half square triangle
All SA are 1/4" and pressed towards the darker fabric unless otherwise noted.
The newest quilt fabrics to tickle your fancy...
Click the images below to see the full collection. We share any commercial and/or free patterns that showcase them, too. (For inspiration, of course!)
Step 1: Cut patches for your Sailboat
Sample Size : 6" finished 6½" unfinished
Design Type: 4-patch
Two different fabrics are used for the sail, a lighter and a darker version of the same color. After stitching the sample, I wish I'd used two reds with a little bit more contrast.
I like to cut my patches larger than needed for HST and then trim them to size after stitching.
For my 6" sample block I cut the HST patches at 4-1/8" instead of the exact measurement of 3-7/8"square. (These patches are noted with an asterisk—*.)
Finally, one of each of the HST units created is not used. Save them for a future project or use them in another Sailboat block.
Step 2: Assemble the units
Half square triangles (hst).
One for each sail
Mark the back of each #5 square with a diagonal. If you're using a directional fabric—one that you'd like the design to go in all the same direction—use the photo below to help you determine how to mark them.
(An alternate way to mark the diagonals is to use a Quick Quarter Ruler. If you have one and need a refresher, click here .)
For the fabric's design to run top to bottom in the block, layout the squares with the pattern moving in the same direction. Then draw the line from upper left to lower right on one, and from lower left to upper right on the other.
With right sides together (RST), layer a #4/#5 and a #4/#6.
Stitch a quarter inch away from both sides of the line for both sets.
Cut each in two between the stitching. Set one of each pair aside for use in another quilt.
Press with the SA to the #5 or #6 patch.
At this stage your HST should measure the size indicated in the chart below. Trim down to size if you started with oversized patches as I did for this sample Sailboat quilt block.
Your finished HST look like this, the #6 dark sail on the right, the #5 light sail on the right. In retrospect, I wish I'd have chosen two reds with more contrast.
Stitch these two HST together along the #5 and #6 sides.
Since the SA are pressed in the same direction (see arrows), it is E XTREMELY helpful to use pins.
After stitching the pair together, I chose to press this SA open to reduce bulk.
Using the Connector Corner technique, draw a diagonal line on the back of both #3 squares.
To keep the design of the background fabric running in the same direction as the previous HST, layout the squares with the pattern moving in the same direction. Then draw the line from upper left to lower right on one, and from lower left to upper right on the other.
With RST, layer the #3 and #2. Flip back the #2 to see that once sewn, the pattern moves in the correct direction.
Stitch ON the line this time for Connector Corners .
Press. Trim away the excess fabric closest to the corner, leaving a quarter inch SA. You can do this with scissors (which is what I usually use) or rotary cutter and ruler.
SA are pressed to the #3.
Step 3: Assemble the Sailboat quilt block
Arrange the pieced units and cut rectangle to create your Sailboat.
Stitch the rows together with a quarter inch seam. The diagonal seams in the boat and sail nest to make matching the points easier.
Please feel free to use pins if they help you.
Give your Sailboat quilt block one last press—try our simple pressing technique for wonderfully flat quilt blocks. Click here to see just how simple it is.
Your Sailboat block is ready to sail off into your next quilt!

Sailboat quilt block pattern tutorial.
The 12 inch sailboat quilt block pattern can be used in a baby quilt or flip the HSTs to piece an underground railroad sailboat block. See how!
This block is easy to make. It uses a stitch and flip quilting method to turn squares and rectangles into a boat shape.
A variation of the sail boat quilt block has a storied history. It is told that it was used in quilts to help slaves along the Underground Railroad. (Fact or fiction? I don't know, but I'd like to think it's true.)
Maybe it served as a symbol of hope.
Reportedly, when US slaves saw this block in a quilt hanging on a clothes line they knew that a waterway was nearby or that a boat was available.
Both could whisk them away on the sometimes treacherous journey to freedom, usually Canada.
Danger lurked around almost every corner for both slaves and the people who assisted them on the path to freedom.
Just imagine what the person who saw this quilt block, seemingly so innocuous, must have felt. Yes, I would say hopeful.
Let's see how to make it.
Fabric and Block Measurements
Fabric A = sails (white)
Fabric B = sky (blue)
Fabric C = water (brownish grey)
Fabric D = boat (red)
Here are the unit cutting measurements to make an 8 inch and 12 inch sailboat block.
Simply choose your block size and follow the instructions below to make the block.
(Note: To increase photo size, on your keyboard hold 'Ctrl' and hit the + key.)
Block Layout
This is a 4 patch block and is laid out on a grid of 4 rows and 4 columns. The rectangles cover two rows and are attached to two separate rows of squares.
Finished block sizes that are evenly divisible by four - 8, 12, 16 inch finished block sizes - will be the easiest quilt block to make.
The 8 units that make up the block are
- 2 rectangles, vertical
- 4 half square triangles (aka HSTs)
- 2 triangles and 1 wedge
- 1 rectangle, horizontal
Sailboat Quilt Block Pattern Instructions
Step 1 Make HSTs
According to measurement chart above cut 2 squares from fabric A (white) and 2 squares fabric B (blue).
Make 4 half square triangles .
Press the seams open or towards the darker fabric.
Step 2a Make Boat
This step uses the stitch and flip method to make the boat shape.
According to measurement chart above...
Cut 2 squares from fabric B (blue) and cut 1 rectangle from fabric D (red).
Sew on the drawn line (or a thread or two away from it) to attach the squares to the rectangle. If you sew a thread or two away from the line, stitch on the side of the line closest to bottom corner of the square.
Place a 1/4 inch line of a ruler along the seam line and use a rotary cutter to cut away the bottom part of the triangle.
Repeat for the second end of the rectangle.
Flip remaining side of both squares down to reveal triangles. Finger press seams towards triangles.
Step 3 Layout Block
Near your sewing machine layout, as pictured below, the block in the grid format.
Step 4a Sew Top Half of Block Together
Without changing the orientation of the units sew the HSTs and rectangles of rows 1 and 2 together.
HSTs Row 1: With right sides together, place the half square triangle from row 1 column 3 on top of the half square triangle from row 1 column 2. Sew the units together using a 1/4 inch seam along the right side of the block units. Flip the 2nd HST open, right side up. Finger press the seam open.
HSTs Row 2: Repeat for the second set of half square triangles.
With right sides together place row 1 on top of row 2. The bottom of row 1 meets the top of row 2.
To get a perfectly aligned center match the points of the HSTs. Using a marker draw a line on the wrong side of the fabric where the points meet. Sew rows 1 and 2 together using a 1/4 inch seam, careful to stitch over the drawn line (even if it's not exactly 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric). Usually, finger press the seam open.
To see the above done in step by step photos check out the pinwheel quilt block pattern tutorial .
Perfectly aligned center!
Take the sewn rows to the ironing board and press the seams (not pictured).
Use a starch alternative pressing solution if desired.
Step 4d Layout Block
Place the HSTs back in the block layout.
Step 5 Sew Rectangles to HSTs
Now sew the two side rectangles of the sailoat quilt block pattern to the HSTs.
With right sides together, place the left rectangle face down over the HSTS. Align edges along the long sides of both units. Sew together using a 1/4 inch seam
Repeat for the second side rectangle.
Finger press the seam toward the rectangles.
Step 6a Sew Row 4 to Row 3
With right sides together, place the bottom rectangle (water) face down over the boat rectangle unit of row 3.
Sew rows 4 and 3 together using a 1/4 inch seam. Finger press the seam toward the bottom rectangle (water).
Step 7 Sew Bottom of Block to Top of Block
With right sides together, place the bottom half of the block (boat and water rectangles face down over the top half of the block (side rectangles and HSTs).
Sew together using a 1/4 inch seam. Finger press the seam toward the boat rectangle.
Step 8 Block Completed
Beautiful! Once the maple leaf quilt block is sewn together, take it to the ironing board and give it a final press.
Here's the backside of the sailboat quilt block pattern. You can see how the seams are pressed. (Okay, I missed the mark on the seam between the row of the HSTs. I meant to press it open. If you do the same, just go with it - press the seam in the direction it wants to go.)
This completes the traditional sailboat quilt block pattern tutorial.
Underground Railroad Sailboat Quilt Block Pattern
To make an Underground Railroad sailboat quilt block pattern make a few changes.
The difference between the traditional sailboat quilt block and the Underground Railroad sailboat block is in the half square triangles that make up the sails and a portion of the sky.
In the traditional sailboat block there are four sails . These are made up of four half square triangles. One of the triangles of a HST represents the sky and the other represents a sail.
The triangles that represent the sky point upward to the left . The triangles that represent the sails point downward and to the right .
In the Underground Railroad sailboat quilt block there are three sails . Again, they are made up of half square triangles, but only three. What would be the fourth is a plain square .
The triangles that represent the sky point upward to the right . The triangles that represent the sails point downward to the left .
(Cut the plain square the same size as the trimmed half square triangle that you won't use. You can place this HST in your scrap pile and use it in another project.)
Now, see the Underground Railroad sailboat quilt block pattern.
When I was researching the Underground Railroad sailboat block I noticed that in all of the pictures that I saw (and I am sure I did not see all) the sky was done in a cream or white color. At the very least the sky was done in a very light color.
I did not see any commentary about this but my thinking is that it could represent a nighttime sky lit by the stars and moonlight.
Maybe this is due to the fact that travelers along the Underground Railroad did so mostly at night.
Another possibility is that it would be easier to see this color in a quilt hung outside at night.
Whichever version you choose to make have fun making the sailboat quilt block pattern.

11 tips for crafting lighthouse themed quilt designs.
Are you prepared to embark on a quilting journey? We have 11 insightful strategies to assist you in navigating the waters of Lighthouse-inspired quilt patterns.
From choosing the perfect pattern to adding personalized embroidery, we’ll guide you through every step.
So grab your fabric and thread and get ready to create a masterpiece that will light up any room.
Let’s dive in and craft some waves of creativity together!
Key Takeaways
- Consider factors such as size, complexity, and personal preference when selecting a lighthouse pattern.
- Choose a color scheme that complements the lighthouse pattern, such as cool blues and soft whites or contrasting colors like red and navy blue.
- Incorporate lighthouse-themed quilt borders and experiment with different fabric textures to mimic the ruggedness of a lighthouse’s exterior or the smoothness of its glass windows.
- Enhance the quilt design with seashell embellishments, create waves and water effects using different shades of blue fabric and quilting techniques, and consider adding embellishments like sequins or metallic thread to highlight the sparkle and shimmer of sunlight on the water.
Choosing the Right Lighthouse Pattern
When choosing the right lighthouse pattern for our quilt, we consider various factors such as size, complexity, and personal preference.
Lighthouse quilt inspiration can come from a variety of sources, including photographs, paintings, or even real-life visits to coastal areas. It’s important to find a pattern that captures the essence of a lighthouse while still being manageable to create.
Look for designs that showcase the unique shape and details of the lighthouse, such as the windows, doors, and surrounding landscape. Additionally, consider the overall complexity of the pattern, as some designs may require more advanced quilting techniques.
Ultimately, the choice of pattern should reflect your personal style and taste.
Now that we’ve selected the perfect lighthouse pattern, let’s move on to selecting the perfect color palette for our quilt.
Selecting the Perfect Color Palette

When it comes to choosing the right size shark duvet cover for your little one’s bed, there are a few key points to consider.
First, you’ll want to determine whether a twin or full-size cover is the best fit. If your child has a bunk bed, it’s important to find a duvet cover that’s compatible with the bed’s dimensions.
Additionally, there are special options available for toddler beds, ensuring a perfect fit for your little shark lover.
Twin or Full
Our little ones’ shark-themed bedding can make a splash in their rooms with the right size duvet cover. When it comes to choosing between a twin or full duvet cover, there are a few factors to consider. Here are three key points to help you make the best decision for your child’s bedding:
- Size: Twin duvet covers are typically 68×86 inches, while full duvet covers are 86×86 inches. Consider the size of your child’s bed and how much coverage you want.
- Comfort: A twin duvet cover may be more suitable for a smaller bed, providing a snug fit that’s cozy and comfortable. On the other hand, a full duvet cover may offer more room for movement and freedom during sleep.
- Style: Both twin and full duvet covers come in a variety of designs and patterns, allowing you to find the perfect shark-themed bedding that matches your child’s taste and room decor.
Choose the right size duvet cover that balances comfort and style to create a jaw-dropping shark-themed bedroom for your little one.
Sizing for Bunk Beds
To ensure the perfect fit for your little one’s shark-themed bedding on bunk beds, it’s important to consider the sizing of the duvet cover. When it comes to bunk bed safety, it’s crucial to choose a duvet cover that fits securely on the mattress. A cover that’s too large can bunch up and create a tripping hazard, while one that’s too small may slip off during the night.
To ensure bunk bed organization, opt for a duvet cover that’s easy to put on and take off, making it simple for your child to make their bed each day. Additionally, look for a cover that’s made of high-quality materials, ensuring durability and longevity.
By selecting the right size shark duvet cover, you can create a comfortable and safe sleeping environment for your little one.
Now, let’s explore some toddler bed options.
Toddler Bed Options
We have several toddler bed options available for you to choose from when selecting the right size shark duvet cover. Transitioning to a toddler bed is an important milestone for your little one, and ensuring their safety is paramount.
Here are three toddler bed options to consider:
- Convertible crib: This option allows you to easily convert your baby’s crib into a toddler bed, eliminating the need to purchase a separate bed. It provides a familiar and comfortable sleeping space for your child.
- Toddler daybed: A toddler daybed is a versatile option that can be used both as a bed and a seating area during the day. It provides a cozy and secure environment for your toddler to sleep in.
- Low-profile toddler bed: This type of bed is specifically designed for toddlers, with low height and safety rails to prevent accidental falls. It offers a smooth transition from a crib to a bed while maintaining a safe sleeping environment.
When choosing a toddler bed, prioritize safety features such as sturdy construction, non-toxic materials, and secure railings. Ensure that the bed meets all safety standards to provide a secure sleeping space for your little one.

Sew an X's and O's Baby Quilt with Sashing
This X's and O's baby quilt has a much different look than my scrappy X's and O's quilt . In the baby quilt, both shapes are easy to see. Sashing makes the shapes more visible, and sewing the dark areas of each letter with just one fabric makes the shapes pop, too. X's and O's is an easy quilt, and you'll find instructions for two sizes.

Try My Floating Nine Patch Baby Quilt Pattern
You might think this baby quilt pattern looks difficult, but it's actually a very easy quilt to put together. Nine patch quilt blocks are alternated with Snowball blocks, all placed on point .
One reason it appears more complex is likely the quilt's setting triangles , which are created from patchwork (half and quarter nine patch blocks) rather than cut from a single piece of fabric.

Monkey Wrench Quilt, Sew a Baby Size or Mini
I've written two versions of this Monkey Wrench quilt pattern. One is a miniature quilt that finishes at 23" x 29". The other is larger, a Monkey Wrench baby quilt that measures 38" x 47"
Make either or both of the quilts -- a miniature version of a quilt for a baby would make a wonderful coordinating wall hanging.

Try My Easy Crafty Windows Quilt Pattern
Some of my Facebook followers decided this quilt looks like plaids. A few others like its window-like look, especially since it's somewhat reminiscent of the windows we see in Craftsman styled homes.

Linked Stars Quilt
This easy quilt is made by alternating two traditional patchwork quilt blocks. The blocks finish at 10" square and overall the quilt measures 65" x 85". It's easy to alter the quilt's size by changing the number of blocks sewn. Quick piecing techniques are used for assembly.

Civil War Quilt Pattern
My Civil War quilt pattern is an example of a strippy quilt, a quilt that's sewn into horizontal or vertical rows separated by long strips of sashing (or other components). This quilt illustrates a vertical strippy design.
Civil War reproduction fabrics inspired the design, but it will work equally well with any type of theme.
Christmas Row Quilt Pattern
Here's a Christmas quilt pattern made from six different horizontal rows. Quilt blocks vary in size and so do the number of blocks per row. Some rows are applique, but I've included links to holiday-friendly patchwork designs for anyone who'd like to insert patchwork substitutes.
Learn How to Make a Puff Quilt
You might know these comfy quilts as either biscuit quilts or puff quilts. Mary Jane Cardwell wrote a puff quilt pattern for us, using a method that will help you put your projects together more quickly than is possible with the traditional technique.
Indian Hatchet Rag Quilt
If you're ready to make a rag quilt with some angles, rather than a mix of square and rectangular shapes, try my Indian Hatchet rag quilt pattern . Like other rag quilts made using my favorite rag quilting method , it requires no quilting (and goes together quickly, even with the triangles).
These comfy quilts are perfect for babies and warm lap quilts, but they also work nicely for beds that our furry friends love.
Amish Baskets Quilt Pattern
Make 15" square basket quilt blocks in traditional Amish style, or vary your fabrics for a slightly Amish look. The quilt block pattern includes instructions for single quilt blocks (perfect for scrap quilts), but on page 3 you'll find directions to help you make the 63" x 63" quilt illustrated here.

Use different colors to create your own unique theme.

Make a Sailboats Quilt
The Boats at Sea quilt pattern is assembled with two different Sailboats quilt blocks, one with a boat that sits on a strip of water and the other with a boat that rests at the bottom of the block. Using the boats together gives the quilt a bit of up-and-down movement.
Dark vertical sashing bars separate blocks in individual rows and lighter sashing strips are used horizontally between the rows. Cornerstones are cut from a medium value fabric.
You can also use the quilt block patterns to make individual blocks -- perfect for scrap quilts or block swaps. Refer to the quilt pattern for yardages and cutting instructions for an entire quilt. Blocks finish at 12-inches square.

It's constructed by surrounding a scrappy 16-patch center with setting triangles . My example is filled with bright pinks and purples flanked by gray, but you can personalize your quilt by changing the fabric theme.

Sawtooth Stars Quilt Pattern
Many, many years ago my sister, Carol, began making a pink and orange quilt. Sadly, it wasn't finished when she passed away. I have the pieces, though, tucked away until I feel I can dig in and combine colors in the same way she did. An artist, colors were always her strong point.
She introduced me to the pink/orange look, which I've incorporated into the Cheddar and Pink Sawtooth Stars quilt, which is a bit more subdued and also sewn with the additional of green. You say you aren't a fan of orange and pink combos? Then simply change the colors to suit your tastes.

Strippy Set Dutchman's Puzzle Quilt
Make 35 quilt blocks to assemble a strippy set look quilt like this example, with blocks that appear to be sewn into vertical columns. It's a very good pattern for scrap quilts.
Each block's color value (contrast) arrangement is split vertically, and deviates from the norm, with a dark background in one-half of the block and a light background in the other. The pattern walks you through the construction of two quilt blocks, and although they have the same components, they're sewn together in different ways.
Dutchman's Puzzle Quilt Pattern
A Walk Through the Maze Quilt Pattern
A Walk Through the Maze is a bed quilt made from two traditional patchwork quilt blocks, Christmas Star and Single Chain and Knot. Only four fabrics are used, and colors link to create a somewhat circular motion across the quilt. Change the fabrics for a completely different look.
Try a black background instead of using the light fabric shown, and replace the remaining colors with bright fabrics that contrast with the black.
Illinois Road Quilt Pattern
Illinois Roads is made from two different quilt blocks, the traditional patchwork Illinois Road and a variation of the Calico Puzzle design. The pattern helps you make the square quilt sewn here, but it's easy to switch to a rectangular layout if you like. The quilt is perfect for a scrappy layout that uses bright fabrics for the small pinwheel-like units in the Illinois Roadblock.
Hula Twist Quilt Pattern
Hula Twist is a quilt made with 12" square blocks. Two traditional designs are used, the Friendship Star and the Eccentric Star. The blocks link together to give the quilt a bit of twist, helped by the very light background that allows the "legs" of the Eccentrics to move forward.
The quilt finishes at 72" x 92", but you can adjust its size by playing with border numbers and dimensions.
Ohio Star Quilt Pattern
This quilt is sewn with a couple of blocks -- one is the traditional Ohio Star. Its color values are altered slightly and the block is placed on point -- both actions that change the Ohio Star's appearance.
Make the 48" square wallhanging for yourself or when you need a gift. The quilt goes together fairly quickly, and its theme can be altered dramatically by simply changing the fabrics.
Ohio Star Wallhanging Pattern
Whirlpools Baby Quilt Pattern
The Whirlpools baby quilt goes together pretty quickly and might come in handy if you need a last minute gift.
The quilt is made with one traditional block sewn in two different colorways. Blocks are assembled entirely with quick pieced flying geese units, but using two different methods. With one technique, you'll sew small squares to a larger square to create the geese, and with the other method, you'll start with rectangles.
Cozy Chains Quilt Pattern
Cozy Chains is a layout that's somewhat like my Easy Framed Nine-Patch Quilt. The two are made with different quilt blocks but are similar in that the same block is used throughout in two different colors to create definition where the blocks are sewn together.
The Cozy Chains quilt has dark squares than run diagonally through all of the blocks, adding another bit of visual texture.
Choose Fall Colors to Sew an Autumn Leaves Quilt
Each block in this quilt is made from four small maple leaf units separated by sashing and a center cornerstone. Alternate blocks are Snowballs with deep red corners that link with the maple leaves to create the diagonal flow. This large quilt finishes at 82" x 110".

Framed Nine Patch Quilt Pattern in Two Sizes
I've included instructions for two sizes with this pattern, a bed quilt made with 10" square blocks and a baby quilt made with 5" square blocks.
Easy Framed Nine Patch Quilt Pattern
Here's a Monkey Wrench baby quilt pattern that measures about 38" x 45". Made with 6" square blocks, it's pretty simple to construct.
Sashing and cornerstones separate the scrappy blocks, which are sewn in brightly colored, warm patchwork set on a dark brown background. Simply change the color scheme if you'd like to give the quilt a different appearance.
Make an Easy Holiday Ribbons Wallhanging
Holiday Ribbons includes a pattern for a 30" square quilt, along with a coordinating table runner and placemats.
Holiday Ribbons Quilt Pattern & Accessories
Make a Harvest Stars Quilt
You'll see toasty brown fabrics, plus green, black and red in this 72" x 96" quilt made from two different quilt blocks. The blocks appear to be set on point, but they're actually sewn side by side in a straight setting.
Harvest Stars Quilt Pattern
Hearts 'n Rags Rag Quilt Pattern
Hearts 'n Rags is an easy rag quilt pattern, one that you can assemble pretty quickly. The quilt is made with a combination of block types: squares with raggy heart applique, plain floral squares, blocks cut from a border print and another unit created by sewing two bars together.
My quilt is lightweight, with no batting, but I've provided yardage and cutting instructions for a middle layer if you choose to add it.
Hearts 'n Rags Rag Quilt Pattern
Stars Through the Windows
My Stars Through the Windows quilt pattern is assembled with two quilt blocks, Snowball, and a four patch variation. Both blocks are easy to sew and perfect for a first quilting project.
Use the open areas to create an I Spy quilt .

Midnight Blues Quilt Pattern
Click through to see a large image of the Midnight Blues quilt (the thumbnail doesn't offer a good preview of the layout). I like this quilt, because when it's put together the quilt blocks, sashing, and cornerstones flow into each other, creating what I'll call sub-blocks .
Midnight Blues finishes at 59" x 79".
Midnight Blues Quilt Patten
Cathedral Windows Rag Quilt Pattern
It's easy to create your own size and layout for the Cathedral Windows rag quilt, but if this is your first rag quilt, be sure to read Rag Quilt General Instructions before you begin.
I've seen this design referred to in other ways, including 'circle rag quilt.'
Under the Stars Quilt Pattern
Under the Stars is a quilt made with 35 of the same quilt blocks but in two color variations.
Jewel Box Quilt Pattern
I've added a few options to the popular Jewel Box quilt pattern — instructions for one-at-a-time blocks, plus extra directions at the end for enough blocks to make an entire (scrappy, but quick pieced) quilt.
Summer Dragon Quilt Pattern
This version of the Summer Dragon quilt finishes at 69" x 90". Adjust its size by changing the width of borders, adding more borders than shown or by eliminating borders altogether.
Summer Dragon Bed Quilt Pattern
Oriental Courtyards Quilt Pattern
Oriental Courtyards finishes at about 65" x 85". The quilt is made with two blocks, Snowball and a block I named Courtyard.
Springtime Ribbons Quilt Pattern
Springtime Ribbons was designed for breast cancer awareness fabrics, but feel free to change its theme to suit your needs.
Framed Nine Patch Quilt
The Framed Nine Patch finishes at 45-1/2" x 60-1/2", so it's larger than most baby quilts, but works perfectly as baby becomes a toddler.

Grandma's Favorite Quilt and Quilt Block Pattern
Grandma's Favorite quilt blocks finish at 10" square, and the pattern includes instructions and yardages for a 50" x 50" quilt.
Grandma's Favorite Quilt Pattern
Card Trick Quilt Pattern
Card Trick quilt blocks go together easily. The 9" blocks in this Card Trick quilt are separated by sashing and cornerstones and surrounded by a wide border.
The quilt finishes at 63-1/2" x 84-1/2".
Starry Night Quilt Pattern
Starry Nights is a strippy set quilt pattern sewn with Pinwheel and Snowball quilt blocks that finish at 8-inches square. The quilt measures about 72" x 104".

Snowballing Economy Quilt Pattern
This easy quilt finishes at about 54" x 70", and is made by combining two traditional patchwork quilt blocks: Snowball and Economy.
Christmas Orchard Quilt Pattern
Christmas Orchard is made from Snowball and Practical Orchard quilt blocks.
Rocky Glen Quilt Pattern
Rocky Glen is a quilt pattern that will give you lots of practice making half square triangle units -- the only patchwork used in the quilt.
Double Stars Quilt Pattern
The Double Star Quilt is made from 20 quilt blocks that are separated by sashing and cornerstones .
Holiday Harvest Quilt Pattern
Holiday Harvest is a quilt that combines 10" Grape Basket blocks with applique Oak Leaf and Acorn blocks. Two options are included for the applique, one a bit more simple than the other.
Eight Hands Around Quilt Pattern
Eight Hands Around is a quilt that finishes at about 68" x 80", with blocks measuring 12" square. It's easy to change the theme -- just choose different fabrics.
Pineapple Quilt Pattern
My pineapple quilt pattern is assembled with thirty-five 9" pineapple quilt blocks. Two color layouts are used in this illustration, but you can sew identical blocks for a more traditional layout.
Got Blues? - One Color Quilt Pattern
We did a poll awhile back that asked, Which Color Stacks Are Tallest at Your House? . Guess what the overwhelming answer was -- yep, you got it -- blue. So here's a monochromatic blue quilt to help you use up your stash.
The blocks in this quilt pattern are 10" square and the quilt finishes at about 55" x 69". Change the look if you'd like. Use bright juvenile prints for a child's quilt or go a little softer for a baby quilt. How about batiks? Or maybe white and black prints with a touch of red.
Got Blues? Quilt Pattern
Patriotic Quilt Pattern That's Perfect for Picnics
Here's a quilt that measures about 66" square, a perfect size to take along on picnics or July 4th celebrations. Use flannel for the batting to get by with minimal quilting stitches since good old flannel stays intact in the wash. T
The fabrics illustrated work with a U.S. patriotic theme, but the pattern itself is generic -- try juvenile prints, florals, batiks, reproductions -- anything goes.
Waving the Flag - Free Quilt Pattern
Missouri Puzzle Quilt Pattern
I'm from Missouri, so I thought it was about time I came up with a quilt pattern that shows off one of the blocks named to commemorate the state. This one's the Missouri Puzzle, a square quilt with sashing and cornerstones between blocks.
The quilt blocks finish at 11-1/4" square and the quilt itself measures about 66" x 66".
Spring Pinwheels Quilt Pattern
The Springtime Pinwheels quilt is made from a combination of two quilt blocks:
- Pinwheel in a Square and Mosaic Pinwheels .
Quilt blocks are alternated from row to row to create a secondary design when blocks are joined. The layout makes it look like blocks are placed on-point , but they're actually sewn together horizontally.
Quilt blocks finish at 8-inches square and the quilt measures about 53" x 69".
Springtime Pinwheels Quilt Pattern
Friendship Star Quilt Pattern - 6" Quilt Blocks
Friendship quilts have been popular forever, but they don't all have signature panels like the centers of these 6" patchwork star blocks. The blocks are easy to make and the dark star tips and center bars don't require much fabric at all -- it's an excellent pattern to help you use up your scraps.
If you'd rather make the quilt all by yourself, use the signature panels to honor family members, or sew a darker strip in that slot if you'd prefer to do away with signatures.
Little Friendship Stars Quilt Pattern
Marina Blues Quilt Pattern
Marina Blues is a 68-inch square quilt made with two different quilt blocks. It was inspired by a model home I toured many, many years ago -- all teals and blues and sea-greens, with a crystal clear blue-lined pool outside the back door -- a perfect match for the Florida beach town it sat in.
Snail's Trail Quilt Pattern
I like the neutral theme of this Snail's Trail quilt, but the pattern will look good sewn with any contrasting fabrics you choose.
The 9-inch quilt blocks are constructed with two different fabrics, one a light neutral and one dark. The quilt measures about 70" x 77".
Snail's Trail Quilt Pattern
Vintage Chains Quilt Pattern
I rarely sew with solids, but this is a pattern I might consider for an Amish style quilt, combining deep navy or black with brighter colors. To make the quilt, you'll sew batches of two different blocks, and then place them on point and add a couple of borders.
The quilt finishes at about 84" x 98".
Sunbonnet Sue and Overalls Sam Quilt Pattern
The Here's My Heart quilt pattern explains how to make a 64" x 84" quilt that's a combination of patchwork and appliqué.

Grandmother's Choice Quilt Pattern
Ocean Waves Quilt Pattern
Ocean Waves is a quilt pattern that's packed with half square triangle units . The quilt isn't difficult to make, but it does have lots and lots of pieces.
The Ocean Waves quilt pattern is perfect for scrap quilt s, but looks great sewn in an orderly fashion, too. If the number of patches the quilt requires seems like more than you want to take on, just assemble a small batch of the units each time you sit down to sew. Accumulate them in a box, keeping track of how many you add each time.
For a true scrap quilt, sew the units with random fabrics from each day's sewing tasks. The end result is definitely worth the effort.
Clownin' Around Quilt Pattern
Clownin' Around is made with the traditional patchwork Clown quilt block. I used vibrant colors in this example, for a circus-like theme, but included a monochromatic version with vertical sashing as an example for those of you who like to designs that are a bit more toned-down.
Learn How to String Piece
String piecing is one type of foundation piecing. Fabrics are sewn onto a backing material -- the foundation. The technique gets its name from the long strips of fabric that are used -- the strings, which are sewn randomly to a permanent foundation that's typically cut from muslin.

Building the Quilt around one Quilt Block. My first step was to make the sailboat block. I used the blue waves fabric for the sea and the bird fabric for the sky and I added a pop of red for the bottom of the boat itself. Once the FPP block was finished I measured the size of the finished block. I think it was around 12″ plus the seam allowance.
