Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 Review

Tiger Woods 13 still presents a decent golf game, but there isn't much new here, and many added features like Kinect support come with problems.

By Brett Todd on March 29, 2012 at 5:26PM PDT

The Tiger Woods series is struggling to find its way. After sticking with the troubled superstar over the past few years of scandal and an extended slump, EA Sports doesn't seem to know what to do with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 on the Xbox 360. This could have been a very good golf game, but its identity has been watered down with gimmicky Kinect support, a lame mode where you play as Eldrick Tont Woods from tyke to today, and extortionate downloadable content. Gamepad swing mechanics have been nicely overhauled, and the new Country Club mode promises to help the game establish an online community, but taken together, all the new features don't add up to anything meaningful.

Lil' Tiger may be cute, but the new Tiger Legacy mode needs a lot more than that to be enjoyable.

There isn't much new in Tiger Woods 13. The look and sound of the game haven't improved much over earlier releases, although there do seem to be more nifty shadow effects on courses and a few more commentary lines from main booth jockey Jim Nantz. The core game is essentially brought forward from last year in its entirety. All the main modes of play are back for another round. You can play one-off matches, set up a golfer and begin a pro career, head online for multiplayer tournaments, head to The Masters again, and so forth.

The most significant addition is Tiger Legacy, where you play as the great one in various stages of his life, from childhood to the present day and beyond. Sadly, Tiger's life was extraordinarily tedious, if this game is to be believed. EA does nothing of interest with this feature. All it does is provide different Tiger player models to look at while you shoot your way through boring challenges like dropping balls into a backyard wading pool, hitting target scores in rounds, helping Tiger break Jack Nicklaus' record for victories in the Majors, and so forth.

A much more notable change comes with the gamepad swing mechanics. Standard button pushing has been tweaked pretty extensively in the new Total Swing Control for the gamepad. It works a fair bit like the left-stick-oriented control scheme from last year, but with more options and more attention paid to things like the tempo of your swing and foot position. In other words, it's a little harder to nail long drives that split the fairway, or make accurate approach shots that land you a couple of feet from the cup, especially when you nudge the difficulty above pro. But you get used to the changes quickly.

Kinect support can make shots like this incredibly satisfying or incredibly frustrating, depending on whether or not the sensor picks up your swing.

While this is a superior system, one that offers you a great deal more control in all aspects of making shots, it isn't so dramatically better that it makes the game a must-buy. That said, it does offer the best putting mechanics in the history of the series. Putting is spectacularly accurate here. The thumbstick perfectly tracks your motions when pulling back and pushing forward, letting you make some jaw-dropping 50-footers, or at least put up some valiant attempts and get close to the cup. Say good-bye to the annoying old days of cursing out your thumbs when a putt inexplicably came up too short or wound up running 20 feet too long because the controls let you down.

Kinect support is offered here for the first time, but it comes with a lot of irritations. Most notably, it really helps to use a stick or a shortened golf club like the ones made for the Wii to help guide your movements. A lot of effort is required to take shots, especially when driving. So if you don't have something to grip to help your balance, it's easy to wind up off-kilter or possibly even pull muscles by practically corkscrewing your body into the living-room carpet. Still, the motion-sensing gizmo can be almost breathtaking at times. When you slam a drive down the fairway it almost feels like you've really just slammed a drive down the fairway. Approach shots, playing out of the rough, escaping the sand, and so forth all require some serious touch as well. Get out of a tough spot, and you feel like doing some authentic Tiger fist pumps.

All of this good stuff is damaged by problems with the Kinect sensor not picking up your movements all the time. It drops out on a regular basis. You swing through a mighty drive, finesse an approach shot, or take a tense 20-foot putt for par…and then wind up doing it all over again, maybe even two or three times all over again, because the Kinect somehow didn't detect your smooth moves. This is annoying and tiresome, because the average round sees you taking a lot more swings than actually get registered in the game. There also is a lot of "all or nothing" with Kinect shots. You either nail your shot just about perfectly or implode so badly that you're firing gopher killers a few inches off the ground or blooping the ball 50 yards into a stream. There aren't enough just-missed moments of the sort that you would expect in a game where you're playing as a wannabe pro. At any rate, stick with the regular controls.

Is the sun setting on Tiger's glory days?

Other problems also get between you and the greens. While you are treated to a lot of content, with 16 courses in the main game, loads of freebies and easily unlockable equipment, and other extras, EA beats you over the head with pay-to-play DLC. A huge part of the game has been dedicated to yanking more cash out of your wallet for courses, skill boosts, equipment, and so forth. You can earn coins within the game that can be used to purchase these goodies, but this requires a spectacular amount of grinding.

If you really want the extras, most notably the numerous DLC courses that the game constantly teases you with, you pretty much have to pay for them. The same goes for the golf bag pins that provide you with various buffs during rounds. You get the first pack free, and can theoretically earn the rest of them with lots of time on the links, but it's hard to imagine finding the time to do so without quitting your job, leaving school, freeing your dog on the street to fend for himself, and so forth. With all that said, you do get a lot of content in the base game and don't absolutely need to shell out more money. But the lure of buying those instant-improvement pins is always very, very tempting.

Aim for the obnoxious fan in the plaid blazer.

One good aspect of the DLC comes with the new Country Club option. This feature lets you gather together online and play at specific clubs, just like in the real world where golfers join specific clubs and make them their homes. Coins are earned for rounds played at each club, giving you more opportunity to play those locked-out courses. This also works pretty well as a virtual clubhouse for players online, and even fosters a massively multiplayer online vibe within the game. It's easy to see how this concept could be stretched further to make an actual MMO game.

If you already have Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters on the shelf, think long and hard before buying its successor. The questionable additions like Tiger Legacy and the DLC sales pitches don't add anything to the playability on the links themselves, where it really counts. Only the superior gamepad controls and the iffy Kinect support make the new game stand apart from its predecessor, and even these improvements can't be recommended without some caveats. Unless you are dissatisfied with the old swing mechanics on the gamepad, or you desperately want to swing an imaginary golf club in front of your Kinect sensor, you could safely sit this year out.

  • Leave Blank
  • Lots of content with career mode, 16 courses, and more
  • Revamped gamepad controls including extremely accurate putting
  • Promising Country Club feature
  • Paltry number of new features
  • Tiger Legacy is a tedious waste of time
  • Some swing issues with the Kinect
  • Obnoxious DLC

Tiger woods pga tour 13 (xbox 360) review.

EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour is back again for another year and looking to make a splash with Kinect integration.  For the first time in the series the Xbox 360 Kinect will be able to track your full body movement in an effort to create an advanced virtual golf swing.  There are some other noteworthy additions this year too such as revamped swing mechanics, new golfers, new courses, online country clubs and for the first time you can experience Tiger’s legacy.  Yet at the end of the day, the ability to play Tiger with your body as the controller appears to be the main selling point this year.  So does it play better with the Kinect Sensor?  Do all these additions make it worth picking up Tiger 13?  Let’s find out shall we.

With the exception of EA Sports’ NFL Madden game, I have stopped purchasing most sports games year in and year out.  The main reason is that I cannot justify paying full price for a game that includes just a few more bells and whistles.  I pick up Madden every year because I am a massive NFL fan and I find the franchise brings back enough “new” to keep me coming back.  I guess it boils down to how much of a fan you are of that given sport.  Likewise, I have many friends who pick up Tiger Woods PGA Tour every year as they feel EA Sports manages consistently bring a solid golf experience to the table every year.  This year Tiger Woods PGA Tour has seemingly upped the ante by not only revamping the swing mechanics but also including full Kinect integration.  Unfortunately, just like my real life golf game, some of the new additions are hit while a good chunk of the new additions are a miss.

Wasting no time, when I first popped in the game I wanted to check out the new Kinect controls.  You can navigate the game’s menu with the controller or with your arms and hands; however, in order to get a first taste the Kinect functionality I wanted to put the controller down right away.  Navigating the front end with the Kinect is accomplished with the use of your hands.  Swiping much like other Kinect enabled games gets you through the menus and into the game.  The only issue I had navigating the menus was that it seemed a little difficult to control the menu selections as they flew across the screen when you held your arm out.  Clearly, using your arm and hand along with the Kinect sensor could have been a little more refined.  It just seemed like the menu system had a mind of its own, and trying to get it to settle down into the right category took some patience.  I cannot count how many times I would yell, “wait go back” as the game modes flew past.  Needless to say, Tiger 13 was off to a rough start when it came to the Kinect integration.

xbox 360 tiger woods pga tour 13

Once I finally managed to jump into a game and ready to hit the virtual links, I was very curious to see how the Kinect swing mechanics would pan out.  To pull off a swing you need to face the TV with the front of your body looking at it, clasp your hands much like you would grab a club and then take a natural swing to hit your shot.  The Kinect tracks your movement during your swing including your arms, hips, and shoulders.  On the higher difficulty settings you may hook or slice if you do not maintain good form throughout your swing.

Overall, the swing mechanics using the Kinect sensor fall flat.  For starters, it was awkward to face the TV with your body square to it as opposed to standing sideways facing the TV like you would if you are driving a ball off a tee box.  To me, it just makes much more sense to stand as if you are ready to drive a ball onto the fairway.  So right off the hop, I was not impressed.  Secondly, I did not find the Kinect all that responsive to my motions.  Many of my drives fell flat and frankly I had no idea what I was doing wrong as I consider myself to have pretty good form on the golf course.  It just did not seem to read my body motions properly.  In any event, it was not long before I plunked myself back on the couch and used the standard Xbox 360 controller for the rest of my Tiger 13 experience.

On a more positive note, the Kinect also makes use of voice commands with the “see it, say it” system.  Any text that appears on screen in quotation marks will be recognized as a voice command.  For instance, to change a golf club to a pitching wedge, you would say, “change club, pitching wedge”.  It is a simple as that and unlike the Kinect movement sensor I was amazed with the responsiveness and accuracy of the voice command.  Every once in awhile it misinterpreted my nasally voice, but overall it was bang-on.

One of the more enjoyable new features this year is the Tiger Legacy Challenge.  Here you can relive firsthand Tiger Woods’ most memorable golf accomplishments as he rises from a child prodigy to golfing legend.  You start out in this mode by making an appearance on the Mike Douglas Show when Tiger was just 2 years old.  Here you have to drive a couple of balls into the net.  Once you successfully complete one challenge based on one of Tiger’s accomplishments you move on to the next challenge.  Whether it be chipping balls into Mom`s handbag in the backyard or sneaking on a course to play with Dad on the 3 rd hole, Tiger Legacy Challenge offers up a nice amount of variety and some fun mini-games as you play as Tiger at different ages.  I should also mention some of the challenges are quite difficult so do not expect to breeze your way through them.

xbox 360 tiger woods pga tour 13

Another new addition this year is the new swing mechanic where the tempo and speed of your swing influences the power of your shot.  A fast tempo will add more distance to shots, while a slow tempo will result in less distance.  The visualization of the golfer’s swing is shown in the form of the swing meter.  When swinging you need to use the meter as a guide to help you execute a proper swing with the right power and trajectory.  All in all, I found the swing mechanics using the controller to be bang-on.  Swinging does feel and look incredibly natural.  The adjustable shot setup also allows for countless ways to hit the ball with one club.  It makes for a swing mechanic where you really feel in control and responsible for all the nuisances that go into a good golf shot.

Much like last year`s Road to the Masters mode, this year we have Road to the PGA Tour mode.  In this mode, you choose to start your career in one of three Amateur Tours (American, United Kingdom, World) and try for the chance to compete in the Masters as an amateur contender.  Win and you will earn your PGA Tour card.  Finish in the top 25 to earn amateur exemptions allowing you to compete in a limited PGA Tour schedule, or continue your career on the Nationwide Tour.  Win three tournaments on the Nationwide Tour to earn a battlefield promotion to the PGA Tour, or battle it out in Q-School at the end of the year.  All in all, Road to the PGA Tour is excellent single player progression mode that will surely give any Tiger fan countless number of hours of replay value and of course a great reason to play the game for months on end.

One of the great features from the previous Tiger game is back, and that is your Caddie.  Before each shot your Caddie suggests the best option for your shot.  Turn on automatic Caddie and the game will automatically select the best club and shot for you.  All you then have to do is execute the shot.  I personally enjoyed this aspect and rarely took a shot without consulting with my Caddie.  While you cannot disable the caddie, you can certainly opt to not take any of his suggestions and set up your own shots in the traditional fashion.

xbox 360 tiger woods pga tour 13

Despite some of the new additions to the game, the controls largely feel the same.  Tiger veterans should be able to jump right back into the game without a hitch.  Once again the swing mechanics and putting stroke are sensitive.  Pull back the analog stick for a split second too long and that could result in a horrendous putt.  Much like a real life swing the game does a wonderful job at having your pay attention to all the little things that go into a good swing.

This years game ships with 16 courses on the disc, five of which are new to the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series on the Xbox 360.  Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13: The Masters Collector’s Edition features five additional courses, including one that is new to the series, as well as the Augusta National Par 3 course and Tournament Practice Facility.  There are 15 more courses available for download, as well as a special 16th Bonus Course. The game includes 22 licensed golfers comprised of 20 male golfers and two female golfers- including five new golfers and two PGA Tour pros returning to the franchise.  Additionally there are two sets of celebrity golfer packs available as pre-order incentives.

While 16 courses out the box seems like a decent number I was somewhat taken back with only 22-golfers included.  Yes, I understand only 22 were included last year; however, with many new and old PGA golfers on the scene, I just figured we may see an increased roster.  This could also raise the profile of the PGA game while Tiger gets his game back.  Simply put, 22 golfers seemed far too few for my liking.

Visually, this year’s version of Tiger is a nice step forward.  It is nothing incredibly innovative or jaw dropping but still a decent step in the right direction.  Overall, I noticed the courses looked a little sharper while lighting effects and some new unique camera angles provide a more authentic and true to life experience.  The grass seems to pop out and the colours in the game are simply fantastic.  The character animations seem a little dated but otherwise Tiger 13 is game that features plenty of eye candy and does the PGA proud with a stunning looking game.

xbox 360 tiger woods pga tour 13

As far as the sound is concerned, it does not appear as if there has been much if any improvement.  The ambient musical score is back and the colourful David Feherty makes his return to the game.  The commentating is good but not nearly enough to keep things interesting.  I was also surprised with the amount of repetition.  The game’s sound effects also seem a little dated and could use an overhaul.  Sure birds chirping or fans cheering all sound good but it is sounds we have all heard before from the franchise.

The online game is back again but this year includes online Country Clubs.  Here you can invite friends to join your own exclusive country club and team up to gain quicker access to downloadable golf courses and compete against other club members for the coveted Club Championship.  Once you are a member of a Country Club you will begin earning Status Points for every round you play anywhere in the game such as Play Now or Online head to head matches.  Status Points are used to level up your club and rank yourself against teammates to compete for Club Champion honors and earn coins.  Based on your weekly performance and Status contribution to the club, you and your teammates will rank up from Members to Club Champion.  Each week, the individual crowned Club Champion is awarded a substantial coin bonus and invited to the special Club Champion tournament to represent their club vs. the Club Champions of all the other teams.  Overall the Country Clubs will come as a welcome addition to those hardcore Tiger fans who have been awaiting something like this for years.

Overall, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 is a game fans of the series can pick up as the new additions will likely satisfy those who played last year’s game and are looking for some advancement in the game, especially the addition of the Country Clubs.  Unfortunately, when game box says it is “Better with Kinect Sensor” I can’t help but think that this is misleading as this is not the case at all.  In fact, the game simply suffers when you play with the Kinect sensor.  If you are planning to pick up the game for the Kinect functionality you are making a big mistake.  Despite the flawed Kinect functionality, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 is an enjoyable game with the regular controller and the new additions this year make it game fans of the franchise will want to own.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 Review

Par for the course. haha, get it that's a golf joke..

Mitch Dyer Avatar

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 knows what makes it great, and the Total Swing System is an authentic, excellent improvement. The meaningful new controls enable players to feel great about their skill while holding them accountable for their faults. Beyond that, Tiger 13 struggles to succeed. Its most substantial new mode, Tiger Legacy Challenge, is a dull waste, and making the most of the in-game economy is difficult without hardcore dedication to an online Country Club.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 13 - Kinect for Xbox 360

Join Eric Busch, one of the designers on Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 13 as he discusses Kinect for Xbox 360 integration in this year’s game and Mike DeVault Lead Designer as he demonstrates new and exciting ways to play.

Hi, my name is Eric Busch, and I’m one of the designers on Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 13 . Today I’ll be discussing Kinect for Xbox 360 integration in this year’s game. This probably goes without saying, but I am particularly proud and excited about the work our team did to create one of the most immersive and authentic video game golf experiences available.

While we had previously introduced motion-control in the title, the technology in Kinect gave us the ability to track full body movements across 1,000 data points. This lets us identify a player’s subtle body movements and swing mechanics. With this level of detail in mind, we approached the design process for Kinect integration with two main goals.

First, we wanted to provide a compelling gameplay experience for gamers and golfers alike (i.e., make it better with Kinect!). Second, we wanted to ensure that players would be able to navigate with Kinect from start to finish without ever needing to pick up a controller. After all, this is the first controller-free, voice-enabled, sports simulation title to support Kinect for Xbox 360! Let’s take a quick look at some of the in-game navigation and how you can use Kinect to start tackling some of the most storied and respected golf courses.

Front-End Menu Obviously, the first thing the player encounters in a game would be the front-end menus, and we spent a lot of time trying to get the navigation just right. We went through numerous prototypes, using various methods of navigation and selection, but finally settled on a 4-way scrolling control with a 2-way swipe mechanic.

By extending your right hand you’ll be able to scroll Left/Right/Up/Down through the menus. Once you have your desired selection highlighted, you simply swipe your right hand across the front of your body to advance. To back out of screen you swipe across your body with your left hand.

Nearly every menu in the game can be navigated with this simple hand gesture system, including all of the primary screens going into Play Now, Tiger Legacy Challenge Career and other game modes.

In-Game Gestures and Voice Commands In addition to the in-game menu, there are also other control gestures unique to Kinect. To zoom out and view the landing area, simply raise your left hand to your brow as if you were shielding your eyes from the sun. To aim, reach your right hand out and close your hand to grab the aiming marker. You can then drag the marker forward, back, left or right.

Once your aim is set, simply open your hand to release the marker. The same grab and drag gesture works to adjust your golfer’s stance, or to control the amount and direction of spin while the ball is in the air. You can even crouch down to get a close up view of your lie.

In addition to the in-game menu and gestures, we are also supporting Microsoft’s “See it, Say it!” approach. What this means is that any in-game text that is designated with quotation marks can also be said for easier navigation. You simply need to say “Zoom In” to zoom to your aiming marker or “Change Club, 7-Iron” to grab a 7-iron from your bag using only your voice.

The Swing Once you’ve picked the right club and set up your shot, you’re ready to take a swing. To enter the swing state, take a natural golf stance by clasping your hands in front of you as if you were gripping a real golf club. The length of your backswing combined with the speed of your forward swing will determine the power of your full swings and putts.

Additionally, based on your selected swing difficulty setting, there are different levels of mishit detection. While the swing is forgiving on the easiest settings, on the higher settings you need to watch your form to prevent an unwanted hook or slice.

We recorded the swings of several hundred players, both males and females of all ages and golfing abilities, and this data was used to “teach” the game what should and should not be recognised as a valid golf swing. With a little practice you’ll be hitting long drives, sticking approach shots, and draining putts just like Tiger Woods himself.

Stay tuned for upcoming Producer Blogs outlining additional features in the near future.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 marks the beginning of a new era for a franchise that was beginning to grow slightly stale. This year the development team has added a brand new swing mechanic and an intriguing new game mode, not to mention motion controls for both the PS3 and Xbox 360, something seemingly tailor made for the video game golfing experience. And while not everything works quite like it should, the changes are a step in the right direction, further cementing the Tiger Woods series as the premier golfing franchise.

Any successful overhaul begins with a revamped game mechanic and control scheme, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 is no different. The revamped swing system is easily the most successful new feature in the game. It offers a surprising amount of depth, proving incredibly intuitive, whether newcomer or series veteran. At its most basic, players need only pull back the analogue stick and flick it forward in as straight a line as possible and with the desired amount of pace.

Successes and failures are conveyed with the use of a swing arc, as well as a small analogue tracking box in the bottom left of the screen. Pulling the stick to the left or hitting the ball with a lack of conviction is all visually represented, offering players a fairly detailed analysis of each and every shot. If, for example, you're consistently guilty of hooking each shot, it's easy to factor this into future attempts. Players also have the ability to open and close their golfer's stance and aim for specific spots on the ball, subsequently changing the height and direction, perfect for avoiding wind or for chipping out of bunkers.

This year finally sees the Tiger Woods franchise dabble with motion controls, something that theoretically, should be a perfect fit. As with most Kinect games, however, there are a few ghosts in the machine, preventing the controller-free aspect of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 from fulfilling its potential. With the exception of how to line up a shot - you face the screen, instead of adopting a side-on stance - those familiar with Kinect Sports Season Two will notice many a similarity.

Players can survey the course by shielding their eyes, crouch to line up shots and use voice commands to change clubs or even ask for advice. While these features are well implemented - apart from the aim mechanic which is a little fiddly - the problems occur when actually taking shots. The long game is fine as the Kinect sensor is generally pretty forgiving, particularly on the default setting. Putting is nigh-on impossible, however, as the sensor fails to pick up minor movements consistently and accurately. One way to overcome the problem is to switch back to the controller for putting, but it disrupts the flow of each game and ruins the momentum.

preview for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 launch trailer

Another major addition, on paper at least, follows the life of Tiger Woods from toddler to champion. Tiger Legacy Challenge is a brand new challenge mode, which also serves as a glorified tutorial. Each chapter represents a different stage in Tiger's life as a golfer, beginning as a toddler chipping balls into a paddling pool out back, and putting in front of a live studio audience on The Mike Douglas Show. Chapters are made up of multiple challenges, and are preceded by a brief, albeit poorly executed, video featuring snippets from the man himself.

While there are some interesting challenges, such as an early dream sequence that sees Tiger match Jack Nicklaus's total number of Major wins, the majority are incredibly dull. It's a fantastic idea, and the true to life aspect of the challenges are a nice touch, but the mode simply lacks atmosphere and that little bit of polish. Challenge requirements aren't always clear, especially when they're made up of multiple parts, while some are a little too lengthy, making it incredibly frustrating when having to restart.

Fortunately, Legacy Challenge is only a small part of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 experience. The majority of time will be spent teeing off as one of the game's plentiful supply of licensed golfers, on one of the 16 courses included (for free) in the game. The career mode is still enormously deep, taking custom golfers from minor competitions to major tournaments. In addition to authentic tournament play, the career mode contains a wealth of unlockable items, clothing and pins, which take their cue from role-playing games and online shooters, adding stat boosts when equipped. It's a great idea.

Though satisfied with its out of box offerings, there is so much more to do in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 , but it will cost you, either in-game coins or cold hard cash. Coins are a big part of this year's release, and can be earned by completing challenges on each course - multiple birdies, pars, eagles, etc. Unfortunately, accessing one of a whopping 20 additional courses costs a lot of coins, and not only that, coins can be difficult to earn.

You can permanently unlock extra courses by maxing out their challenges, but it's likely to take multiple attempts, which means lots of coins. The result is a batch of unattainable unlockables that are more realistically available to users willing to pay for them as DLC. It's a little cynical, although there's no denying that the best courses are already included on disc.

For every step backwards the game takes, it makes up for it with an improvement here or a tweak there. The online portion of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 is fantastic, offering a new country club scheme that sees friends band together to play private tournaments and earn extra coins. Countless regular tournaments are also available, as well as the usual array of quick matches. Not only is online play the most enjoyable way to tackle the game, but it also yields more coins, aiding efforts to unlock those extra courses.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 is another enjoyable golf simulation from Electronic Arts, offering nearly everything that a fan of the sport could ever ask for. The Xbox Kinect controls aren't fully up to task, especially during the short game, while the Tiger Legacy Challenge is something of a mixed bag, proving a little lifeless, despite offering moments of entertainment. The new swing mechanic is enormously impressive, however, while online play and the game's career mode prove immensely enjoyable and are remarkably deep. Cynical use of DLC aside, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 remains the definitive video game golfing experience.

Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13

xbox 360 tiger woods pga tour 13

If baseball is a game of inches, golf is a game of degrees. The loft of a driver; the slope of a fairway; whether a ball lies above or below your feet; an open or closed club face — even a few degrees’ variation in any of these respects can significantly alter a shot’s path.

Golf is also an expensive game to play. The necessary equipment alone will set you back at least a few hundred dollars, which is to say nothing of concomitant costs such as caddies and carts.

EA Sports’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 represents both those aspects of golf very, very well.

[ Editor’s note: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 supports Kinect and PlayStation Move, but since I do not own either, I was unable to try out that functionality and will not discuss it in this review. –Samit ]

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 (Xbox 360 [reviewed], PlayStation 3) Developer: EA Tiburon Publisher: EA Sports Release: March 27, 2012 (NA) / March 30, 2012 (worldwide) MSRP: $59.99 / $69.99 (The Masters Collector’s Edition)

EA Tiburon has made sweeping control changes in PGA Tour 13 that vastly expand shot variety and the effects of user input. Called “Total Swing Control,” the revamped setup is a new paragon of control refinement in sports simulations, presenting a system that’s fundamentally familiar while offering a greater degree of control over shots than in any golf game to date.

A golf shot consists of two discrete segments: the setup and the swing. In aiming mode, the D-pad moves the ball’s landing spot, while the right stick controls the position of the ball in your stance (which affects the shot’s trajectory) and how open or closed that stance is (which affects fade and draw, respectively). Having settled on your shot, you address the ball and prepare to swing. Here, you move one analog stick to determine the height of the club’s sweet spot in relation to the ball — this further affects trajectory, and can also be used to dig a ball out of a bunker or pick it out of the rough — and swing with the other stick.

2

Once you enter address mode, a white trail that represents the ideal arc of your swing appears around your golfer. PGA Tour 13’ s updated animation system works in concert with Total Swing Control to present realistic visual cues to a swing’s potential for success. The game now translates your exact analog-stick motion into a swing: if you pull back and to the left, you’ll notice your golfer’s arms and club follow a red trail that deviates from the white arc. Upon swinging, an on-screen graphic provides feedback on the accuracy, power, and tempo of your flicking motion.

Total Swing Control instantly makes every other simulation golf game obsolete. Tiburon has removed the shackles of previous Tiger Woods games, which limited you to certain situational shot types, and the result is astounding in that it lets you do almost anything a real golfer can do. PGA Tour 13 gives you the freedom to succeed or fail, depending solely on your skill with a controller. I’ve recovered from bad lies in the rough or the sand in ways that simply weren’t possible until PGA Tour 13 . (Sadly, you still can’t save replays of highlight-reel-worthy shots.) Total Swing Control is a rare innovation, the kind that makes you wonder how you got along all this time without it. I do wish the game did a better job of explaining it, though.

One of last year’s new additions was the caddie, who offered shot suggestions based on current conditions. There’s now an option to see your caddie’s advice and go with it or alter your shot in a way that suits you. He usually provides valuable advice, proposing shots that take into account factors you may not have considered. But a lot of his suggestions made me scratch my head — he tends to over-complicate tee shots with draw and fade, as well as overshoot approach and chip shots. I often found myself ignoring his advice and setting up shots myself; perhaps Tiburon didn’t want players to rely completely on his suggestions.

3

New in PGA Tour 13 is a mode called Tiger Legacy Challenge, in which you follow the arc of Woods’ career from his toddler years all the way through the rest of this decade. You play as Woods at seven different ages in ten eras of his career, reliving some of his most significant golfing milestones and creating some future ones. Each segment of his career includes an audio clip of Woods talking about the challenges he faced and the memories he has of those special moments, and it’s truly endearing to see one man’s passionate, lifelong pursuit of golfing greatness.

Legacy Challenge offers 53 events with enough variety to keep things fresh. But some of that variety manifests in odd difficulty spikes. You’ll struggle to keep pace in repeated matches against Woods’ fictional rival, a stoic redheaded kid named Scott Ratchman, but one challenge sees Tiger return to his backyard as a teenager to practice a few straight ten-foot putts. You will have had to sink many much more difficult putts just to reach that point in Legacy Challenge.

Road to the PGA Tour, the traditional create-a-golfer career mode, has similar quirks. You start out as an amateur, with the promise of an invitation to The Masters if you can win a regional Amateur Championship. I destroyed the amateur competition in tournaments, once going 14-under while everyone below me was at least a few strokes above par. Yet opponents in one-on-one games such as sponsor challenges kept up with every shot I made. Even so, few videogame thrills compare with the accomplished joy I felt upon winning the Masters’ coveted green jacket as an amateur.

4

The most irritating aspect of the career mode — and indeed, the entire game — is the pervasive intrusion of paid content. It’s painfully obvious that EA really wants you to spend money in PGA Tour 13 , whether it’s the in-game currency of Coins or real money in the form of Microsoft Points. The disc includes 16 courses, and EA is selling another 16 downloadable courses; the six additional courses exclusive to the Masters Collector’s Edition are not currently available for purchase. Tiburon had the audacity to integrate DLC courses into the career regardless of whether you have access to them, so you’ll occasionally come upon an event that you can’t initially play because you haven’t unlocked or purchased the course at which it’s taking place. (Thankfully, you can at least change the venue to an available course.)

This year, you don’t have to buy a DLC course outright (for at least $5 each; less in packs) if you want to play it. You can use your Coins — which you can earn by playing any mode of PGA Tour 13 , or buy with real money (at $5 for 15,000 Coins) — to purchase rounds on downloadable courses. You can also spend Coins on Pin Packs. Consumable Pins are limited-use items that confer bonuses such as attribute or equipment boosts, while Collectable Pins can be hoarded as a way to unlock courses. Completing all of the objectives to achieve “Gold Mastery” on a particular course is the other way to unlock it for unlimited use.

That may sound appealing, but it’s actually insidious. While it’s great that you can try out a DLC course without buying it, you’re better off just paying the $5 to own it if you think you might play it more than once. A single round on a downloadable course costs 6,000 Coins; you get two plays for 9,000, and three tries for 12,000. But you earn Coins at a pitifully slow rate: only about 600 per 18-hole round. And the Gold Mastery unlock is something of a charade: most of the Gold objectives are cumulative goals, like achieving 100 pars or hitting 80 greens in regulation, that are difficult and require numerous rounds to complete. The math just doesn’t work out. And what’s particularly grating is that PGA Tour 13 goes out of its way to remind you at every turn that you’re missing out on content, like by leaving downloadable courses in the course select menu as grayed-out options.

5

The best way to earn Coins more quickly is to join friends in an online Country Club, essentially a clan. You can compare in-game accomplishments with members of your Club and compete for Club Champion titles, or join with your teammates to take on other Clubs and make your way up the leaderboards. It’s a fun setup that encourages each member of the Club to play as well as possible, and since it incorporates offline progress, you can be a social golfer without ever playing online.

Thanks to the new swing setup, I’ve had more fun playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 than any previous entry in the series. By putting the onus on you to think like a real golfer and execute every shot, PGA Tour 13 makes successful play more rewarding than ever before and gives you the closest possible feeling to mastering a world-class golf course in real life. EA’s bothersome money-grubbing tactics resemble annoying flies that keep buzzing in your ear, threatening to ruin the golfing experience, until you smack them into oblivion with a perfectly played tee shot.

Impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.

Behind the Design

The inspiration behind the Nike TW ’13 began with Tiger himself. An avid enthusiast of Nike Free shoes away from the links, he asked for a golf shoe that gave him the same fit and feel as the shoes that he ran, lifted and trained in. The result was a combination of comfort and performance that changed golf shoes as we know them.

Swing Through

The engineered outsole mimics and conforms to the natural motion of the foot, coupled with the traction of a lightweight performance golf shoe. This innovative outsole helps you to keep contact with the ground longer, better harnessing the energy of the foot to the shoe and, therefore, the shoe to the ground.

Fitted Feel

Nike’s Dynamic Fit system offers targeted support, delivering strength-to-weight ratio and 1-to-1 fitted support. Flywire-infused nylon straps extend 360 degrees from the footbed to the lacing system, securing the foot for an adaptive fit that provides golfers stability with mobility.

Tour-Level Traction

Updated removable spikes and spike receptacles provide exceptional grip.
