First of all, thanks for the great help in organizing this short adventure. You helped us wherever it “get stuck”. rented Beneteau Oceanis 38.1 boat (Anima Maris III). It was a really wonderful experience, but we have to credit the part of the merit to skipper Igor; he tried to really fulfill all our wishes and desires, although it was not always feasible because of the weather conditions. To say that we are very satisfied is too little, and we will try somewhere in the September to get together and organize something similar again. We rented the Solarec Bavaria Cruiser 46 with 4 friends to sail for a week from Split to the surrounding islands. Our guide Duje Zaja thought us how to sail, we had no experience with sailing. He always knew the best places to go to and because of his connections we slept at some great spots in Hvar, Vis and Trogir.

I was really satisfy and had a great moment with a very professional, and kind crew. Boat (gulet Adriatic Holiday) was very clean. Food was excellent, I recommend this chef! Water-skiing was great.

Since 1995 we have been working in yacht charter business and offer sailing boat rental in Croatia . We mostly work with high-quality sailing boats provided by our sister company Beneteau Croatia . In addition to yacht charter in Croatia , we also operate one of the oldest and best sailing school in Croatia where we provide sailing courses to “new” as well as to experienced sailors.

Our company philosophy is to provide our clients with the best possible service  when they charter a yacht for a sailing holiday in Croatia . Our team consists mainly of very experienced sailors, securing the highest possible standard in the whole process with arranging/planning, booking, arrival at one of our charter bases in Croatia and final departure from the Marina for an unforgettable sailing adventure in Croatia.

As already mentioned, our yacht charter fleet consists mainly of sailing boats from Beneteau. In our fleet we have boats from 30 feet to about   64 feet and in terms of berths our boats offer space for 6-12 persons. All boats are carefully maintained by our technical team and the colleagues from Beneteau Croatia . As a charter client you can expect to board a charter boat in super condition.

Well, what is the wording – no rule without an exception ! Actually, we at Ultra Sailing also have Catamarans for charter ; the catamarans are of the brand Fountaine Pajot . If you rather want to rent a motorboat , mega yacht or other types of vessel our experienced booking team can of course assist you in finding vessels of those types.

From which charter bases in Croatia can the Ultra Sailing boats be rented?  Ultra has branch offices and staff in ACI Marina Split , ACI Marina Dubrovnik , Marina Baotic (Trogir) ,    ACI Marina Pomer in Pula and Marina Kastela . Charter boats have to be returned in the same Marina they were rented in. Upon request and payment of additional fee it is possible to arrange one way charter from Trogir/Split to Dubrovnik or vice versa . 

Charter price  depends on a number of factors, size and type of charter boat, duration of rental and date of the charter . At Ultra we offer various discount programs like early booking Yachtcharter   or last minute sailing if you are flexible it is possible to enjoy a week sailing holiday in Croatia at a bargain price.

If you are looking to charter a sailing boat in Croatia for the first time, you of course need to be aware of the formal requirements for chartering a yacht in Croatia , no need to say that a license for operating the vessel is required. Additionally, sailing and navigation skills should be on an adequate level. We chartered Bruneko's Linea Uno (Elan Impression 45.1) yacht for one week in August. Check-In was the best I ever had as a skipper. Base employees weren't pushy for a quick check-in, left time to check the boat alone and then explained every feature on this a brand new yacht (AC, grill, electric toilets,...). The boat was serviced very well with a full tank, really high quality bed linen and a small welcome present. Even small things like hand-soap, sanitizer, tea towels and clothespins were thought of! Check-Out was really smooth and uncomplicated as well. I recommend Bruneko Charter to the fullest!

I chartered yacht Bavaria 34 NEO from Bruneko Company during my summer vacation. I am absolutely impressed and satisfied with literally everything. Contact with company before arrival was perfect, staff and positive attitude was more than I accepted. Boat Bavaria 34 NEO was new and astonishing. It wasn’t just regular charter boat, but it had really everything, including AC, lightening under the boat. All instruments on boat were new and in perfect shape. This has been the defining difference for me when evaluating my experience. I had an incredible experience with Bruneko Charter, particularly when chartering their catamaran, the Bali 4.2 named “Stairway to Heaven.” This catamaran exceeded all expectations with its remarkable spaciousness. Yacht Charter Rijeka

Rijeka is the main commercial sea port and third largest city in Croatia. It lies at the head of the Kvarner Bay, on the eastern side of the Istrian peninsula; due North of Krk and Cres islands. It is a deep-water port and a major shipbuilding and maritime transport centre. A pleasing city with many points of interest and charming Hapsburg-era architecture, there are also a number of festivals held here in the summer if you are after a cultural fix.

The mainland coast is magnificent, rising from sea level to mountains in a relatively short distance. It is a good place to rent a motorboat, sailboat or gullet. From Rijeka, cruising the Kvarner islands of Krk, Cres, Losinj and the smaller islands and islets is possible. These pretty islands with their crystalline waters, attractive bays for shelter and short distances between them are ideal for sailing. Well-organised with great nautical infrastructure and bountiful natural beauty, Kvarner bay is a fine sailing destination. Along the coast is the busy resort of Opatija, above which is the Ucka Nature Park. In Opatija you can find well-equipped marinas, great dining and a little glamour.

Connections

Rijeka is well connected by bus with the rest of Croatia , Italy and Slovenia. Rijeka International Airport is on Krk Island just 30 km away. Domestic and international train lines run from Zagreb, Trieste, Ljubljana, Vienna, Munich and Salzburg. Rijeka is also connected by catamaran to the islands of Cres, Lošinj, Pag, Rab, Unije, Susak, Ilovik. The nearest vehicle and passenger ferry is on the island of Krk which is connected to the mainland close to Rijeka. These ferries travel to Cres Island and Rab Island.

Sailing conditions

Kvarner Bay offers exciting sailing. Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. During early spring and autumn conditions can be more unsettled. The coastal islands along the coast tend to be more mountainous and navigating between them can be exhilarating in gusty conditions. Both mainland and islands in Kvarner Bay area are well supplied with sheltered ports and marinas for when conditions become too difficult.

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Carinthia VII

Originally constructed in 2002, the award-winning Carinthia VII was recently remodeled and reimagined specifically for private charters. The 319-foot ship spans six decks and can accommodate up to 12 guests in eight staterooms. Among the ship’s amenities are two bars, a fully equipped gym and an outdoor projection screen that allows for an “immersive cinematic experience like no other.” The cost of chartering the Carinthia VII is $1,525,700 during both the winter and summer seasons.

The Lady S yacht boasts a number of exciting water toys, including jet skis, water skis, wakeboards and kayaks for athletic guests on the 305-foot ship. For those who prefer more indoor-oriented activities, however, you can also catch a film on the ship’s IMAX Dolby cinema — the first of its kind on any yacht in the world. Accommodating 12 guests, in seven cabins, the cost of chartering the Lady S begins at $1,743,328 a week.

The interior of the Ahpo yacht seems more reminiscent of a luxury hotel than a simple ship. Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard Lürssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

500EXP Para Bellum

This 154-foot-long yacht can accommodate up to 12 travelers in its six cabins, along with up to 10 crew members. The ship was specially designed to enable “guests a 360-degree experience and relationship with the sea” through its unique stern and sundeck that allow travelers to safely stand “almost at sea level,” according to its Italian manufacturer San Lorenzo . Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. The 367-foot long ship features five decks and can accommodate 36 guests in 19 cabins. The Renaissance’s amenities include a 19-seat movie theater, a sushi-bar, and a full spa deck featuring a wellness area, plunge pools and a hair salon. The cost of chartering the ship from Burgess Yachts ranges from $3,269,280 to $3,814,160 a week.

President had meant to say rent increases would be capped at five per cent

Joe Biden struggled to read from a teleprompter on Tuesday, muddling the announcement of a major new policy.

The US president, 81, was speaking at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) convention in Nevada, where he was expected to announce a new five per cent cap on rental increases nationwide – but instead mistakenly said he would be capping rent rises to $55.

Mr Biden has relied heavily on teleprompters during public appearances, often trailing off and losing track of his thoughts without one.

But on Tuesday, he appeared to lack sufficiently good eyesight to decipher what was on the screen in front of him. Gripping the sides of his stand, he leaned forward, squinting before almost whispering: “I’m about to announce that they can’t raise it more than… $55.”

He looked dazed after he uttered the words, pausing before shooting a worried look to the side of the stage.

At another point in the speech, he got the policy correct but trailed off as he attempted to explain its significance. “So corporate landlords can’t... guard... anyway,” he said.

The gaffe is the latest in an increasingly alarming stream of bizarre speech blunders , as the US president struggles to quell the Democratic Party’s panic about his age and fitness for office.

At last week’s Nato summit in Washington, an event meant to showcase his leadership to the world stage, Mr Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin.”

“President Putin?” he said, correcting himself. “President Zelensky. I’m so focused on beating Putin.”

Mr Biden’s new proposal to halt rent increases in the US would cut off tax credits for landlords who try to raise rent by more than five per cent.

The policy would apply to landlords who own more than 50 units, comprising about 20 million rental units across the country, according to the Biden administration.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Left-wing Congresswoman, has pushed the White House to take more aggressive action on housing in recent private interactions with officials.

Mr Biden recently endorsed two ideas pitched by Bernie Sanders – eliminating medical debt and expanding Social Security benefits – at a rally in Michigan. Both Mr Sanders and Ms Ocasio-Cortez have backed Mr Biden recently as support drains away from his candidacy.

Clarence Thomas accepted a free yacht trip to Russia and got flown out on a complimentary helicopter ride to Putin's hometown, 2 Democratic senators say

• Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting undisclosed gifts and trips.

Two Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting a free trip to Russian President Vladimir Putin's hometown.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon filed a letter to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 3, asking to open an investigation into the Supreme Court judge.

The letter said there was a "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars."

The letter's appendix , which lists 35 undisclosed gifts, shows a "yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and a "helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace, St. Petersburg," both listed under the year 2003.

St. Petersburg, Russia, is Putin's birthplace and where he grew up. The president now resides in Moscow.

The appendix list is titled "Likely Undisclosed Gifts and Income from Harlan Crow and Affiliated Companies." Harlan Crow is a real-estate developer and the former chairman and CEO of the Trammell Crow Company.

The senators cited a ProPublica report from May last year detailing Thomas' hushed-up financial ties to Crow.

The report said that apart from the Russia trip, Crow also funded Thomas' grandnephew Mark Martin 's boarding-school fees, which cost "more than $6,000 a month."

In their letter, the senators wrote that other gifts from Crow included "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," as well as "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

In September, Thomas said he'd accepted three trips on a private plane owned by Crow . He didn't mention any other gifts.

Whitehouse and Wyden aren't the only Democrats who've voiced concerns over Thomas' sketchy financial ties.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito on Wednesday.

"Justice Thomas and Alito's repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law," her statement reads.

Representatives for Thomas, Whitehouse, Wyden and Crow didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Judge hears arguments for restitution to families of 34 people killed in 2019 scuba boat fire

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge heard arguments Thursday over whether a boat captain should pay restitution to the families of 34 people killed in a California scuba dive boat fire in 2019, with prosecutors seeking reimbursement for funeral expenses and more.

Jerry Boylan, the captain of the Conception, was convicted last year of one count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer following a 10-day trial in federal court in downtown Los Angeles. The charge was a pre-Civil War statute colloquially known as seaman’s manslaughter that was designed to hold steamboat captains and crew responsible for maritime disasters.

Boylan, who was sentenced to four years in prison and three years of supervised release, was also ordered to pay restitution for what was the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history.

During a hearing Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, however, his attorney attempted to argue that restitution should not be paid because it had not been established that the loss of life was a direct result of Boylan’s actions the night of the fire.

Federal judge George Wu disagreed, saying it was “clearly shown that the defendant did not meet the safety regulation” of having an overnight roving patrol that could have caught the fire, a fact that was already established during Boylan’s criminal trial.

Boylan’s attorney, Gabriela Rivera, also argued that only specific expenses such as funeral costs should be eligible for restitution and should have documentation such as an invoice. She added that Boylan had no significant assets and would not be able to pay restitution, saying he is living off Social Security payments and has a negative cash flow from his bank account.

“He doesn’t have any family,” Rivera said. “He has no meaningful job prospects.”

Prosecutors disagreed, arguing that Boylan in fact had assets totaling six figures and that paying restitution would mean if he ever came into money in the future, he would have to pay the victims.

Kathi Mcllvain, whose son Charles died aboard the Conception, said it was “heartbreaking” to hear the lawyers argue over line-item costs. She and her husband Clark held each other during the hearing and shook their heads as the attorneys went back and forth.

“To nitpick over $700,” said Mcllvain, referring to one amount the defense disputed in their argument. “There’s no price you can put on someone’s life.”

Even if Boylan could not pay restitution now, “at least it should be on the record that he owes that, if he ever does come into money. He shouldn’t have killed 34 people. Then he would have been able to make a living,” Mcllvain said.

McIlvain found it distressing that Boylan was only sentenced to four years and would likely not serve it until his appeal, which could take years.

“Our son’s life was worth a lot more than that,” she said.

The judge said he will have a final decision on restitution amounts at the next hearing July 29.

Boylan is currently out on bond and must report to the Bureau of Prisons by Aug. 8. He was present at Thursday’s hearing but did not speak.

Thursday’s proceeding came nearly five years after the Sept. 2, 2019, tragedy off the central California coast, which prompted changes to maritime regulations, congressional reform and several ongoing civil lawsuits.

The Conception was anchored off Santa Cruz Island, 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Santa Barbara, when it caught fire before dawn on the final day of a three-day excursion, sinking less than 100 feet (30 meters) from shore.

Thirty-three passengers and a crew member perished, trapped in a bunkroom below deck. Among the dead were the deckhand, who had landed her dream job ; an environmental scientist who did research in Antarctica; a globe-trotting couple; a Singaporean data scientist; and a family of three sisters, their father and his wife.

Boylan was the first to abandon ship and jump overboard. Four crew members who joined him also survived.

Although the exact cause of the blaze remains undetermined, prosecutors blamed Boylan for failing to post the required roving night watch and never properly trained his crew in firefighting. The lack of the roving watch meant the fire was able to spread undetected across the 75-foot (23-meter) boat.

But Boylan’s federal public defenders sought to pin blame on boat owner Glen Fritzler , who with his wife owns Truth Aquatics Inc., which operated the Conception and two other scuba dive boats, often around the Channel Islands.

They argued that Fritzler was responsible for failing to train the crew in firefighting and other safety measures, as well as creating a lax seafaring culture they called “the Fritzler way,” in which no captain who worked for him posted a roving watch.

The Fritzlers have not spoken publicly about the tragedy since an interview with a local TV station a few days after the fire. Their attorneys have never responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press, including on Thursday.

Three days after the fire, Truth Aquatics filed suit under a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law that allows it to limit its liability to the value of the remains of the boat, which was a total loss. The time-tested legal maneuver has been successfully employed by the owners of the Titanic and other vessels and requires the Fritzlers to show they were not at fault.

That case is pending, as well as others filed by victims’ families against the Coast Guard for what they allege was lax enforcement of the roving watch requirement.

European leaders discuss migration and Ukraine at a UK summit amid worries about Trump

WOODSTOCK, England (AP) — Leaders from across Europe gathered at a grandiose English country mansion on Thursday for a summit clouded by worries about whether the United States would remain a reliable ally if Donald Trump wins a second presidency.

Newly elected U.K.  Prime Minister Keir Starmer  welcomed some 45 heads of government to discuss migration, energy security and the threat from Russia as he seeks to restore relations between the U.K. and its European Union neighbors four years after their acrimonious divorce.

Starmer told the  European Political Community  gathering that the U.K. plans to take  a more active role on the world stage , especially when it comes to Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion and to people-smuggling gangs organizing irregular migration.

He told fellow leaders that under his government the U.K. would be “a friend and a partner, ready to work with you — not part of the European Union, but very much part of Europe. Not focused on the differences between us, but on the values that we share.”

“Our first task here today is to confirm our steadfast support for Ukraine, to unite once again behind those values that we cherish and to say we will face down aggression on this continent together,” he said, adding that the threat from Russia “reaches right across Europe.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a key guest at the meeting, aimed at shoring up Europe’s support for his country’s defense and discussing ways to defend democracy. The U.K. accuses Moscow of seeking to undermine European democracies with cyberattacks, disinformation and sabotage.

When Britain agreed earlier this year to hold the one-day summit, Conservative leader  Rishi Sunak  was prime minister. His defeat in a  July 4 election  means it’s Starmer who welcomed leaders to Blenheim Palace, a Baroque country house that was the birthplace of World War II Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

“It’s an incredibly useful occasion for Keir Starmer, because it gives him the chance to get to know a lot of European leaders,” said Jill Rutter, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Government think tank. “It’s like Rishi Sunak organized a dating party for him.”

The guest list includes German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

The meeting is the fourth for the EPC group, a brainchild of Macron. It was  established in 2022  as a forum for countries both inside and outside the 27-nation EU after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine shattered Europe’s sense of security. Previous meetings of the group have been held in the Czech capital, Prague; Chisinau, Moldova; and  Granada, Spain .

The U.K. hopes this will be the best-attended summit to date, though EU chief Ursula von der Leyen stayed away as she fights to secure a second term as European Commission president from lawmakers in the European Parliament. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was also a no-show.

Starmer’s center-left government aims to rebuild ties with the EU strained by years of ill-tempered wrangling over Brexit divorce terms. A key priority is a new U.K.-EU security pact that Starmer hopes to strike soon.

“We are confident that a new chapter will be opened with the U.K.,” European Council President Charles Michel said as he arrived.

The U.K. plans to work more closely with the European police agency Europol against people smuggling, part of measures to beef up border security following Starmer’s decision to  scrap the Conservatives’ contentious and unrealized plan  to send migrants arriving in the U.K. by boat on a one-way trip to Rwanda.

Delegates gathered at Blenheim Palace, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of London, will be treated to full British hospitality, including strawberries with cream and a reception hosted by King Charles III.

Many thoughts will likely stray to the U.S., where the weekend  assassination attempt  on Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, underscored how febrile and polarized politics has become ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

Trump’s skepticism about NATO has long worried U.S. allies. Trump’s choice of  Sen. JD Vance,  an opponent of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, as vice presidential running mate has heightened concerns.

“European countries must stand on their own legs more than ever,” said Netherlands Prime Minister Dick Schoof.

That sentiment was echoed by several other leaders, but not by Hungary’s pro-Russian  Prime Minister Viktor Orbán , who has riled other EU nations with a series of rogue meetings with foreign leaders about Ukraine, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Orban said a Trump victory would be “the best news for everybody, because he’s a man of the people.”
