Increasing Introduction of Duty-free Campaigns to Boost the Market for Top Travel Retail Companies

February 01, 2023 | Consumer Goods

The travel retail industry revolves around cruise ships, airport duty-free shops, and airlines. The industry is made up of four primary channels, each of which is completely unique. Each channel has a different passenger profile, consumer behavior, and business dynamics.

Fortune Business Insights stated that the global market size for travel retail was valued at USD 51.28 billion in 2021. The global market is projected to grow from USD 55.74 billion in 2022 to USD 96.11 billion by 2029, exhibiting a CAGR of 8.1% during the forecast period.

Below mentioned are the four types of travel retail platforms:

  •   Airport

Airports across the world have stores in the terminals for arrivals and departures, allowing passengers to shop while on the go. In terms of sales and the number of passengers, it is the largest channel in the travel retail sector and the key growth engine for the sector.

  •   Aircraft

Pre-ordered or in-flight purchases of goods are possible during flights, and both digital entertainment options and paper catalogs are accessible. It is a channel that commands the full attention of passengers yet necessitates carefully chosen strategic merchandise and meticulous attention to detail to ensure success.

  • Cruise Ship

Cruise ship allows for possibilities for shopping at sea while moving between ports globally, allowing passengers to utilize the long transit time to repeatedly explore travel retail offerings. Cruise ships offer the market a rapid growth trajectory, particularly as young passengers have an inclination to become more popular.

  • Downtown Duty-free

It offers opportunities for shopping that let visitors from other countries buy tax-free goods right away or reserve them to pick up after customs at the airport. It is a channel that focuses on the rapidly expanding trend of duty-free shopping outside of the typical channels, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.

Below mentioned are the top 10 travel retail companies around the world:

1. Lagardère Group

Lagardère Group is an international group headquartered in Paris, France, with operations in more than 40 countries worldwide. The group started functioning in 1852. The company houses Burberry, Gucci, Hermes, and Victoria's Secret products and adopts various strategies such as acquisitions and partnerships to grow its sales.

2. LVMH (DFS Group Ltd)

DFS is a luxury travel retailer established in 1960 and headquartered in Hong Kong. It offers a broad spectrum of product categories, including wines & spirits, perfume & cosmetics, and fashion accessories. These companies target international travelers in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East.

The company has around 400 boutiques spread over 13 countries offering high-end products.

3. Dufry AG

Dufry is a Swiss-based travel retail company established in 1865. It operates more than 2,300 duty-paid, duty-free shops and convenience stores in cruise lines, seaports, railway stations, airports, and central tourist areas worldwide. 5. DAA (Aer Rianta International)

Aer Rianta International, headquartered in Dublin and established in 1988, is one of the significant players in the global market. The company manages and owns duty-free retail outlets in Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and the Americas.

The company's flagship store is at Delhi International Airport. It also has 11 stores that offer products such as watches & jewelry, toiletries & cosmetics, apparel, liquor, and tobacco products. 7. Lotte Duty-Free

Lotte Duty-Free also has an online presence that is accessible from any place. The company provides 1,613 brands as of 2019 and is expanding globally to reach more travelers worldwide.

8. Gebr Heinemann SE & Co. KG

Gebr Heinemann SE & Co. KG is a German travel retailer established in 1879. The company operates duty-free shops, fashion-label boutiques at international airports along with stores on board cruise ships and border crossings. The group provides perfumes & cosmetics, confectionery, wine & spirits, fashion & accessories, watches & jewelry, and tobacco products.

9. China Duty-Free Group Co. Ltd.

Established in 1984, China Duty-Free Group is a state-owned organization that operates duty-free businesses across China. It works in 90 cities across 30 provinces of China and has over 200 retail stores. The company strongly focuses on launching new stores and introducing innovative products.

In December 2021, the company launched its first flagship store, CDF Macau Grand Lisboa Palace Shop, in Macau, China. The store offers over 170 brands of fashion, watches, accessories, cosmetic products, jewelry, perfumes, culinary delights, wines, and souvenirs.

10. Abu Dhabi Duty-Free

Established in 1984, Abu Dhabi Duty-Free operates and manages retail, food & beverage, and service operations in the airport's facilities. The group offers an array of duty-free products, high-street stores, luxury boutiques, and theme-based dining outlets. Abu Dhabi Duty-Free's product categories include beauty, fragrances, watches, toys, food, and souvenirs. The company aims to open new stores in airports and cruises to promote its brands.

Duty-free Campaigns are Regularly Offered by Retailers to Increase Product Demand

Nowadays, leading businesses use marketing campaigns to entice customers to purchase duty-free goods. For the higher-income airport traveler groups, businesses also consistently offer high-quality, privately labeled goods and services. The product sales at the airport's retail stores are expected to be aided by the above-mentioned factors.

KGTC planned our honeymoon this past Fall 2019 right after our wedding in NY -- my husband and I had the most magical trip of a lifetime! We went to French Polynesia and spent almost two weeks relaxing, exploring and just enjoying the natural beauty of the islands. Kimmy planned such an amazing experience for us at each island hotel location -- first Moorea then Taha'a. It was so lovely to not have to plan too much on our end since we were so busy with the wedding planning. Kimmy took care of everything and we had so many perks along the way -- from champagne and treats in our rooms to extra complimentary meals and discounts on adventures. It was so reassuring to know that Kimmy was just a phone call away if anything was needed and she made it very easy for us to simply just enjoy the trip instead of worrying about plans or what to do. In Moorea, we snorkeled every day off of our private mini-dock at the overwater bungalow, swam with whales, small sharks and stingrays, and explored the island by car (and got some black pearls on the way!). In Taha'a, I literally cried when we entered the private beachside pool villa on the private island -- we got massages there, took a private hula dancing lesson, explored the island on a private 4x4 guided tour, and went on a private sunset cruise overlooking Bora Bora to the sweet sounds of a ukulele. Thank you to Kimmy for making our fairytale vacation come to life. I dream about that trip on a regular basis and can't wait for our next fully-planned adventure with KGTC!

Maururu! Thank you for trusting us with such a special trip!

LOVE Kim and all her great work at KGTC. She's goes above and beyond. You can stop reading now and reach out to her to book your next adventure. You won't regret it. Kim booked us a weekend away at Yosemite National Park. She choose a gem of a hotel called Chateau du Sureau. It's a small, boutique hotel with stunning grounds, attentive staff, and it delivered the peaceful escape we needed. She made sure we felt safe during COVID times, and the hotel was very rigorous about safety. Kim even gave us a suggested itinerary of hikes inside the park each day that met our fitness levels. All we had to do was download her maps. She covers every detail. The best part: we didn't pay a penny extra for booking everything with Kim. We scored great perks at the hotel, and had the help of her expertise guiding us through a place we'd never visited before. There's no reason to book any other way. You will be impressed off the bat. We can't wait for our next KGTC adventure.

Thank you for the kind words! Maybe next year we can get you to a Chateau that's actually in France!

Last year Kim planned us a dream trip to Africa! We do a big friend's trip every year and could not decide on a location this time around. Kim interviewed us each separately and was able to suggest a trip that ticked everyone's boxes - Zimbabwe! She was so attentive, detailed, and fun to work with throughout the whole planning process. She ultimately put together a trip that was truly once in a lifetime - there were a few tears when it ended. We canceled this year's trip due to Covid but Kim was so helpful walking us through the travel restrictions and risks as we decided what to do. We couldn't be more grateful and can't wait to continue working with her in the future!

Thank you for your review! This trip was so much fun to plan - love a good surprise!

Kim at KGTC booked a week trip to Big Sky, Montana for us this month and we had an amazing experience with her! I love to travel and a friend suggest I follow her on Instagram. I'd been itching to get out of NYC as the pandemic was cooling down, and contacted her when I saw her posting about hotel reopening dates and US road trips. After speaking to her about the trip we wanted the planning process was seamless. She alerted us BEFORE the airlines when our flights were changed, and updated us before and during the trip on any travel policy changes. She suggested specific hikes/lesser known sites in Yellowstone that were gorgeous and we never would've found ourselves. Although I love planning trips I'll definitely use her again. It really was a true vacation when everything was planned for us.

Yeehaw! Glad you guys had such a good time!

Kim planned an amazing trip to Portugal for my husband and I. We had never visited Portugal and wanted to make it a partial golf trip, I'm so happy we trusted Kim's expertise - she planned the absolute perfect trip for us. Kim was knowledgeable and so easy to work with, she listened to what we wanted and gave amazing recommendations. Because of KG Travel Club we had experiences that we could never find on our own, completely custom to us. We stayed in Lisbon a few days and then stayed in Sintra to golf. We were blown away by both hotels, all activities and the golf courses Kim planned. The attention to detail and little extras that Kim included made the trip so special, we were so relaxed the entire time knowing that everything was taken care of! She even booked reservations at amazing restaurants, and suggested ideas for days where we didn't have a set activity - every little detail was taken care of. The trip planner app that she uses is so helpful and she packed it full of info! We got so many upgrades and perks at the hotels, we were able to have a complete luxury vacation while staying within our budget.  After this we will never plan another trip without KG Travel Club, the benefits that you receive by booking through KG Travel Club are well worth it - HIGHLY recommend using KG Travel Club!

Obrigada! It's always such a pleasure working with you and your husband!

Photo of Lauren F.

I've used KG Travel for a few personal vacations with my husband and LOVE the detailed itineraries that custom fit our personal pacing and his and her whims (e.g., 10 mile hike in the morning to suit him, followed by a few leisurely hours with suggestions for where to get post-hike beers or a massage for me - this is right up our alley!). I personally have no interest in researching restaurants so it's amazing opening my itinerary for the day and seeing breakfast and lunch options with our dinner reservations already booked at the coolest spot in town. Also, for our Grand Canyon/Zion trip we took during COVID she figured out all the temporary closures and how to navigate national park access and very limited transportation options when all normal operations were shut down--such a luxury to not have to spend all that time figuring out all the little details and our trip was a much needed break instead of a logistical nightmare. I had a major overseas work trip come up fairly last minute and was tasked with figuring out travel arrangements for me and my boss through multiple airports (Austin, LAX, New Zealand, to a remote island in the South Pacific). I immediately emailed Kim and said please figure out these annoying flights and find us a nice place to stay that will appease my boss - 1, 2, 3, go! She planned everything with minimal info from me and it was so easy and convenient. I plan to use KGTC for all my business travel coming up for a multi-stop trip in Europe once COVID is a thing of the past!

Nothing is more exciting to us than a last minute trip to a remote island in the South Pacific! Thank you for always trusting us!!

A guide to the very best shopping in Moscow

Sep 17, 2019 • 5 min read

travel shop kg

While shopping in GUM department store be sure to check out its famous glass roof © Popova Valeriya / Shutterstock

Shopping in Moscow can be quite a daunting experience – you can walk for miles without finding anything but mass-market brands and overpriced boutiques. But, if you do it right, it can also be quite fun. Here are our top tips on how to get the most out of your shopping trip in Moscow.

An interior view of a wide open mall, with a domed glass roof above.

Shopping malls

There are many shopping malls all around Moscow, but there three that double as bona fide tourist attractions: GUM, TsUM and Detsky Mir, all within walking distance from each other. GUM is one of the oldest department stores in the country. It’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.  Today it serves as a high-class shopping mall. There are plenty of luxury shops, a supermarket that sells lots of signature Russian goods and several places to eat. Head to the more expensive  Bosco Cafe with a Kremlin view or, for a budget option, try the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 . GUM also occasionally hosts contemporary art exhibitions in one of its three main aisles.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

TsUM  is another shopping mall from the pre-revolutionary times. It’s the most luxurious store in the city, famous for its paper bags that many Muscovites carry around or post pictures of on Instagram to let everyone know they shop there. Full of haute couture boutiques, TsUM also has a rooftop restaurant Buro , frequented by Russian celebrities. Tsentralny Detsky Mir  children's store is perfect if you are looking for a gift for a kid or want to check out its awesome viewing platform with good views over central Moscow. At just R50 per ticket it’s a steal.

A curved ceiling with a glass domed centre; there is a fruit and veg stall to the left and a row of other market stalls to the right

Food stalls and markets

There are two food markets that are worth checking out in Moscow.  Danilovsky Market  became the trailblazer of Moscow’s foodie revolution when it got an uplift in 2017. As well as many trendy food stalls, the market also hosts lectures, film viewing and even theatre productions, and it recently opened an antiques section. It’s an architectural landmark, a masterpiece of late Soviet modernism that looks like a UFO. Food at  Usachevsky Market  tends to be a bit more pricey and upmarket. Both markets also sell plenty of fresh produce, local cheeses and cured meats.

An outdoor stall selling Russian dolls painted in bright reds and blues, some with recognisable figures on them, such as Donald Trump and Marilyn Monroe

Antiques and flea markets

Shopping can also be a way to get away from the major landmarks and explore some sights off the beaten path. Moscow’s #1 flea market is  Izmailovsky , located in and around the pseudo-historical complex 'Izmailovsky Kremlin' with its colourful walls and domes. Open daily, it’s best to come here on the weekend to catch better deals. Admittedly tacky, Kremlin has a handful of weird museums like the Vodka History Museum or Baba Yaga Museum (Baba Yaga is a Russian fairy tale character). Part of the market had been gentrified into creative cluster Vernissage , with hipster coffee shops, various workshops and Svalka , an enormous two-floor secondhand shop with everything from used books to vintage clothing.

For high-class antiques, rare books and icons head to Antikvarnaya Lavka (Antique Store) just off Bolshaya Nikitskaya street (5 Kalashny Pereulok). Here you can snag a real masterpiece – a painting or a sculpture – but the prices are quite steep.

Four great day trips from Moscow

Russian memorabilia including a picture of politicians Brezhnev and Honecker, three small trucks and a bust of Lenin

If you are looking for a more authentic place with less hustle, one option is the antiques market on the premises of vodka distillery Crystal (4 ul Samokatnaya), which you can reach by taking tram 20 to Samokatnaya ul from the exit of metro Chkalovskaya. The market is located in the basement of one of the red-brick factory buildings. There are plenty of antiques, books and various Soviet-time memorabilia, such as Stalin and Lenin busts. While at Crystal, be sure to check out great works of street art – they are all around the factory premises.

For die-hard antique collectors there’s also a place right outside of Moscow – Novopodrezkovo market (also know as Levsha market). Take a suburban train from Leningradsky station to Novopodrezkovo (approximately half an hour), cross the tracks to the other side and there you’ll find it – a treasure trove of used books, vinyl records, clothing, paintings and antique furniture.

Where to shop for Russian designs

Gosha Rubchinskiy might be the only Russian clothing designer of world renown, especially after his collaboration with Kanye West, but there are many more up-and-coming fashion stars worth checking out. One of the places to do it is KM20 , the place Moscow fashionistas, with streetwear brands from all over the world and a lot of very rare items. There's also one of the best vegetarian cafes in Moscow on second floor.

GUM shopping mall has a two-storey store devoted to Russian designers –  Sektsiya (Section). Section sells products made by 50 Russian brands, from accessories to Heart of Moscow souvenir pins. Plus there’s a bar overlooking the Red Square.

If you are not into high fashion, but still interested in getting a cool outfit with Cyrillic script, check out the creative cluster centred around two abandoned factories: Flakon and Khlebozavod . One of the biggest stores is Zaporozhets Heritage  at Flakon , which sells clothing and accessories styled after various Soviet pop culture icons. The northern part, Khlebozavod, hosts several shops like Yunost  and Khlebny  that take a more punk-rock approach to streetwear. After shopping, have a pint at a great local craft beer bar Svoboda  or a coffee at Floo .

Sputnik 1985 is a Russian clothing brand specialising in hoodies and hats with quotes in Cyrillic and retro prints. The store is located in a courtyard on Pokrovka street (19 Ulitsa Pokrovka).

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Don’t check it in: How to pack less than 7 kg for your trip

This is AI generated summarization, which may have errors. For context, always refer to the full article.

MANILA, Philippines – Checking in baggage for your flight can be quite convenient, but there are times when the expenses can add up. This can be true especially for international flights, with their higher baggage fees. And, if you are taking more than one international flight to your destination, you can easily spend P1000 just for baggage.

Here’s what you can do this summer to avoid check-in fees and still bring what you need.

1. Bring clothes (as lightweight as possible) only good for the number of days and the activities of your trip. For longer trips, do laundry.

Pack clothes just enough for each day of your trip. At most, bring only an extra change of clothes on top of your clothes allotted for each day. You can fit up to 4 days’ worth of clothes in your hand-carried luggage, and you can stretch that to a weeks’ worth if the clothes are lightweight.

If you feel your bag will be too heavy, be prepared to do laundry or have your laundry done.

Aside from managing the number of clothing items, research on the activities you will be doing and only pack the appropriate outfits. If there’s only a slim chance you’ll be invited to a party, do you really need to bring a cocktail dress and heels? If you are going to a party on or near the beach, a sundress for women and a casual polo and light pants for men are dressy enough.  Flip-flops or casual sandals are good enough as footwear.

For a 4-day trip involving beach or any water activities, I usually pack, as shown in the photo below:

NO NEED TO CHECK IN. All these items for a four-day trip + backpack weigh less than 7 kilograms. All photos by Claire Madarang

  • 2 swimsuits
  • 1 pair of board shorts
  • 1 swimsuit cover-up
  • 1 sarong (lighter alternative to a towel)
  • 6 tops (3 for going out, 3 for sleepwear)
  • 4 pairs of shorts (or 2 pairs of shorts and 2 pairs of pants)

The total weight usually comes to less than 5 kg, which is actually good even for Boracay, where the baggage allowance is often only 5 kg.

I don’t usually pack my heavier clothes or footwear; I wear them on the day of my flight so they are not  counted in the baggage. When the trip calls for some trekking, for example, I wear my trekking sandals to the airport. A cardigan or sweater is a must for me as the air conditioning in the plane can get really cold sometimes.

2. Store your toiletries and other personal care products in small containers.

The allowed weight by airports for hand-carried liquids is 100 ml or less, so bring only 100 ml containers or smaller. You can buy sachets of shampoo and lotions, or, for an eco-friendly option, you can recycle small bottles of personal care products like Human Nature  or buy travel-sized containers from specialty stores like Beabi . You don’t need to fill the containers all the way up, either – just make sure they’re enough for your trip.

Or, you can also make use of extra soap and shampoo from accommodations you stayed at on your previous trips, especially if you will be staying at a hostel or inn – which may not have free toiletries – for your upcoming trip. For overnights stays at a hotel or staycations, I usually save the soap bar for longer trips since I know I won’t be using up the hotel soap on a short overnight stay.

(READ: Packing for a trip? 9 common dilemmas )

3. Limit your gadgets.

Gadgets – especially laptops – can considerably eat up your 7-kilogram baggage allowance. Unless you will be working during your trip (and actually, sometimes, a tablet can suffice), don’t bring a laptop.

A smartphone may actually be enough if you just want to check the Internet occasionally and take photos, especially if you are satisfied with the image quality. In addition, if you have a waterproof camera, you can bring it to document your underwater activities.

I usually just bring my old-school phone (no Wi-Fi access) and my digital camera for a trip. Sometimes I borrow my brother’s iPod touch for Internet access. Or, I simply go to an Internet café during my trip. Some hostels and inns, too, have computers free for guests’ use, so I take advantage of that too.

4. Make room for your essentials.

ESSENTIALS. Choose your perennial travel items and essentials for this particular trip

Essentials can vary from person to person. It may be your meds and supplements, or it may be an item you always bring on your travels, or for this specific travel. Just make sure that these are items you really need for this trip.

I always bring a water bottle I can easily refill when water is available, a scarf or headgear to cover my head from the sun, especially when trekking, and a notebook and pen for writing. I also bring supplements like drops for the eyes, ears and throat. Sometimes I also bring my snorkeling gear if I know there are rich marine sanctuaries in the area.

5. Consider the weight of your backpack or suitcase.

IT’S THE BAG, TOO. Consider the weight of your backpack or suitcase when packing. If you don’t have one yet, best to buy a lightweight one

The bag itself is another item that can eat up baggage allowance, so make sure you factor that in when packing. My backpack weighs a little over 800 grams, which means I have only roughly six kg left for packing.

If you don’t have a backpack or suitcase yet, consider shopping for a lightweight one. Bring a portable weighing scale to compare the weights. You can look at the different brands in department stores, or you can try travel or outdoor shops like R.O.X.

6. Don’t pack such that your baggage will be exactly 7 kg.

LEAVE SOME ALLOWANCE. Don’t let your baggage reach exactly 7 kilos. Make it at least a few hundred grams less as the reading may be slightly different, and even increase, in the airport

Pack less than 7 kilograms. Allow for at least a few hundred grams difference. Even though your weighing scale at home may be digital, it is best to be on the safe side. One time, my supposedly 6.9-kilogram backpack turned out to be 7.2 kg at the airport. The check-in staff let the balance weight go, but it was a lesson for me to leave more allowance when packing next time.

7. Be flexible.

If, after following these tips, you still find your baggage to be over 7 kg, you might need to give up some items, or find lighter substitutes. For example, I usually trade even my light pants for shorts. But in other places, like Myanmar for instance, pants or long skirts are a must.

For that trip, I flew to Kuala Lumpur and then to Penang, before taking the train back to Kuala Lumpur to fly to Yangon, Myanmar. I didn’t want to buy baggage for those three journeys. I didn’t have many light pants anyway, and I like buying clothes in other countries, so I bought pants in Penang. And, since they were light enough, I didn’t need to check in a bag for my flight to Yangon.

Packing less than 7 kg for your trip may be difficult at first, but as you do it more often, you may find yourself enjoying its benefits, like breezing through the airport upon your arrival, without waiting for your checked baggage. And of course, you save a few hundred pesos or more. –Rappler.com

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

Howdy Michele, I love to travel. I’ve read so many posts about travel gadgets, but you are the best one. Your article was beneficial in finding the necessary devices. I personally like an anti-theft shockproof backpack, which is ScanSmart TSA friendly and water-resistant. It is useful for everyone.

Thank you so much, Kim :)

Hello, I have gone through your guide and seems to be interesting though I have one more concern on the WiFi devices. Can you recommend me on the best Pocket Device that will work well on anywhere I travel. I have using AllDayWifi but its very slow on their international data plan. I have been considering RentnConnect though I know very little about it

Hi Collins, have you considered this Skyroam device ? It one of the leaders in the market and very compact.

travel shop kg

What about this Trackimo 3G Travel Tracker device this has Light Exposure Sensor – detect/alerts when package or luggage is opened. I am currently using this tracker and i found this very useful to me every time i go travel around the world :)

Excellent addition Helen, thank you :)

travel shop kg

A tracking device would be a great addition to this list.

travel shop kg

Amazing! This makes traveling easier.

travel shop kg

Definitely brilliant ideas worth sharing

travel shop kg

This IS such a cool list! I thought I had everything, but then I found out the door travel alarm (never would’ve thought of it)!. And I wonder how good the neck support (#33) is because there were PLENTY of times I could have used something like that on my trips.

Hey Trang, the door alarm is such a great idea especially for those times when you just don’t feel safe :) Is there anything you’d add to the list?

travel shop kg

I just carry a small rubber door stop wedge.

travel shop kg

WOW! This is one extensive list of all things travel and certainly one that I will be using to give hints to my friends and family round the holiday season. The new ScanSmart backpack along with the waterproof phone case and solar charger are on top of my list. However my top two purchases are going to be the smart suitcase and the backpack which are absolutely brilliant. Thanks for such a cool list.

travel shop kg

Hi Michele, There are all great ideas. I have one more suggestion for you. Smart Blanket! I used it when flying to Zurich to see my son and his family. The plane was freezing, and there were no blankets to be had. I was the only one that was warm and cozy for the whole 8 hours. I love mine. Got it on Amazon http://amzn.to/2hTYlOP I paid $49.00 for mine. Think they are having a sale on them now. Hope you like my suggestion.

travel shop kg

The door alarm and aeroplane pillow are a great idea to stay comfy and safe! I always take an extension lead when I travel; so that I have more plug sockets in a hotel room, and it also means you don’t need as many adapters when you travel. You also can’t go wrong with baby wipes and small-ish plastic bags in case a seat is wet, a bottle is leaking or you’ve got a mark on your clothes! ✈️?

All brilliant ideas Emily :) Thanks for sharing. I love the baby wipes idea!
