New WhatsApp communication, Covid alerts, hotel options and perks keep cardholders connected and protected on the go

The long-awaited return to travel appears on course. According to the Mastercard Economics Institute 1 , if flight booking trends continue at the current pace, an estimated 1.5 billion more passengers globally will fly in 2022 compared to last year — and tourists are spending 34% more on experiences than before the pandemic. To support a smooth return, Mastercard expanded its Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services platform with new partnerships that focus on seamless travel experiences and priceless moments for cardholders, including WhatsApp servicing, Covid alerts and perks like lounge access when flights are delayed.

A Platform for Preferred Travel and Priceless Experiences.

Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services is a travel planning and booking gateway, granting World and World Elite cardholders access to exclusive guarantees, amenities and upgrades, 24/7 concierge and premium offers and entertainment from top travel brands. With the experience economy in full swing, travelers can ignite their inner wanderlust through the Inspiration Module with exclusive city guides informed by local experts and member favorites. For service at the tap of a button, the program now offers WhatsApp servicing – currently available in several geographies 2 around the world and globally by year’s end – where members can message Lifestyle Managers about travel and concierge requests from their phone.

With pivotal perks like Lowest Hotel Rate Guarantee and Mastercard Hotel Stay Guarantee, cardholders enjoy free nights and preferential treatment across more than 4,000 4- and 5-star portfolio properties worldwide. While in destination, travelers can book once-in-a-lifetime  Priceless Experiences  from a dream vacation to  London and Paris featuring Michelin-starred restaurants  to  luxury glamping in Sweden's Blekinge archipelago  to a visit to the top of New York City’s One World Observatory .

Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services Story Spotlight:

Helping Our Cardholders Plan Unforgettable Moments

Situation: A cardholder contacted Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services to help plan an unforgettable helicopter tour experience for his son who has Cerebral Palsy.

Cardholder Response: So much happened on our trip it's hard to know where to begin. Leaving from the São Paulo airport, my son was given a special greeting by the captain and the crew. It felt like an honor, sweet and sincere. I even held back tears knowing how much it meant to him. We went for the helicopter tour (it was extraordinary by the way) and on the way back we found a package in the room with a letter from our Lifestyle Manager. When I opened the package to see what was inside, I couldn’t hold back the tears this time. I cried when I saw the book, The Man Who Loved Boxes, and then again when I read it to my son. This was not a random gift, it was a chosen gift, thoughtful and generous, and it ended up having an even greater meaning. When I thought it was over, the hotel reception called to say a package had arrived, so they brought it to me and when I opened it, I found a pilot cap. My son loved it. Luckily, we can enjoy reliving these beautiful memories as our guide accompanied us and recorded everything with videos and photos.

New Travel Partnerships and Premier Programs.

In addition to the preferential experience of Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services, Mastercard has forged a number of new partnerships to offer benefits that alleviate travel stress and support more enjoyable journeys. They include:

  • Convenience : For delayed flights or relaxing in peace, cardholders have access to a global network of over 1,100 airport lounges. Recent expansions include Mastercard Flight Delay Pass , now available in geographies worldwide 3 for complimentary lounge access on qualifying delayed flights. Also newly launched is FastTrack in Europe to beat the queue and Mastercard Travel Pass in Canada for a hassle-free airport experience.
  • Connection : Launched first in Asia Pacific and to other regions within the year, select cardholders now have access to complimentary global roaming data packs for use in more than 200 destinations, with a 15% Mastercard discount on top-ups through Flexiroam .
  • Care : Cardholders can opt-in to receive real-time notifications and the latest in COVID restrictions and requirements including testing locations and pricing through Sitata .
  • Comfort : Accessible anytime, anywhere, the new mycardbenefits.com 4 is a digital insurance platform for Mastercard cardholders to immediately see - and seamlessly process - claims for the insurances included on their card — such as car rental, lost luggage replacement, cell phone and trip cancellation.
  • Cash Rewards : Shop and receive cash rewards with Mastercard Travel Rewards at hundreds of marquee merchants in 19 destinations and thousands of online offers for unique savings 5 .

“Many of us eagerly await the chance to satisfy our love for travel, but it can be stressful to plan a trip with so many uncertainties about what traveling will look like,” said Mastercard’s Stephanie Meltzer-Paul, executive vice president, Global Loyalty. “At Mastercard, we’re here to support every step of the journey — from planning to booking to transportation to experiences in destination — so travelers can focus on what really matters. After two years of disruptions, we know that time with our loved ones is truly priceless.”

In addition to servicing cardholders directly, Mastercard is helping governments, businesses, and brands understand shifting consumer trends and preferences, in order to design and test programs and incentives. From market analysis and insights to marketing solutions and consumer engagement strategies, Mastercard services provide customers what they need to welcome back travelers. Most recently, the Tourism Innovation Hub in Spain was launched to develop tailored products and solutions to support a sustainable, inclusive return to travel through innovation, research and collaboration across the ecosystem.

10 credit card tips to help you avoid disaster when traveling abroad

Posted: December 20, 2023 | Last updated: December 20, 2023

Your international flights are booked, your fancy hotels are reserved, and your itinerary is jammed with insomnia-inducing bucket list adventures. All that’s left to do is pack, yeah?

Actually, no. Before you leave home, doing some quick financial housekeeping is wise. If you don’t have a solid credit card strategy, you could pay hundreds of dollars in fees, forfeit easy savings on purchases you planned to make anyway, and even find that your card is nonfunctional at checkout. Here are ten ways to make traveling internationally with a credit card easy.

10 ways to make traveling internationally with a credit card easy

It’s worth exerting a bit of effort to abide by these tips before your trip to avoid a potential hassle during your vacation.

1. Choose a card designed for travel

If you’re planning an overseas trip, you should open a proper travel credit card . It’s not a gimmick—you can achieve a lot of value from the benefits of a credit card specifically constructed with travelers in mind.

For example, many non-travel credit cards will charge a fee when you make a purchase that is processed outside the U.S. During your international trip, you could pay up to 3% in foreign transaction fees for all spending . But most travel credit cards waive these fees.

Depending on how much you spend abroad, waived foreign transaction fees could amount to hundreds of dollars in savings.

2. Tell the card issuer your travel plans

“See if you need to put a travel notification on your account,” says Jen Ruiz, founder at Jen on a Jet Plane. “Many travel credit cards don’t require it but others may. Your debit card definitely will if you intend to withdraw cash.”

Taking this precaution can save you a lot of headaches. If you don’t keep your credit card issuers in the loop when you plan to travel, transactions could be declined as a fraud prevention measure when you try to use your card. Understandably, a charge on your card 7,000 miles from your home can raise a red flag with your issuer.

Most major banks allow you to file a travel notice online. You can input the countries you plan to visit, allowing you to swipe your card along your travels worry-free.

Some credit cards will proactively note your travel plans if you use them to purchase your travel. For example, if you use your card to buy a plane ticket to Paris, you may get a message from your card issuer letting you know that your card has been approved for use in France.

3. Research applicable fees

Depending on your destination, you could be in for unexpected fees whenever you swipe your credit card. For example, when you swipe a credit card at checkout, the merchant accepting payment must cough up a “processing fee” to the credit card issuer. To the merchant, this fee is often well worth the convenience it brings for its patrons. But sometimes, the merchant will tack that fee onto your final bill.

It’s worth researching to see if the area you’re visiting is in the habit of putting the processing fee in your lap—and if so, you may decide to bring along some extra cash to save money.

4. Avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC)

If you’ve ever been abroad, you may have been asked a strange question at checkout immediately after inserting your credit card into the point of sale: Would you like to pay in local currency or U.S. currency?

It’s understandable to want to view your payment in U.S. dollars—simply to better comprehend exactly how much you’re spending. But get this: If you choose to convert your bill into U.S. dollars, you’ll be subject to what is often an egregiously unfavorable exchange rate. This could result in an upcharge of more than 3%. You may even be charged additional fees for the conversion.

Also, realize that requesting a bill to be charged in your home currency doesn’t circumvent foreign transaction fees. You may still be liable for those on top of the exchange rate.

5. Bring a backup card

For a myriad of reasons, you should bring along more than one card on your international fling. For example:

  • You may lose your primary credit card.
  • The card’s payment network, such as American Express and Discover, may not be widely accepted where you’re going (we’ll discuss this more shortly).
  • Fraud or other complications may make your card temporarily useless.

To be extra precautious, Jen suggests to “[k]eep one credit card separate from the rest as a backup. Don’t keep all your cards and money in one place.” Your second card could be a debit card or a prepaid card—but we recommend grabbing another credit card, as it comes with benefits and protections such as $0 liability for unauthorized charges.

6. Set up a PIN (if applicable)

Ever heard of the term “chip and PIN” when referring to a credit card?

Nearly all credit cards nowadays tout an EMV chip. But surprisingly few credit cards in the U.S. are “chip and PIN,” which allow you to complete payment by entering a four-digit number at the point of sale. Instead, most U.S. credit cards are “chip and signature,” which only requires a quick scribble.

In a handful of scenarios, particularly around Europe, you’ll need a true chip and PIN credit card to complete your transaction. For example, an unattended kiosk may prompt you for your PIN after you insert your credit card into the reader. If you don’t have a PIN, you won’t be able to complete your transaction.

Having a chip and PIN card could be the difference between filling up your gas tank and finding yourself stranded without a viable payment method. It’s worth calling your credit card issuer to see if you can set up a PIN on the card you plan to take.

7. Find out how to get cash

We scream endlessly that the hefty fees and high APR of cash advances make them a bad deal . They should only be used in case of emergency. It’s better to plan ahead and take a debit card that will allow you to make withdrawals abroad.

But emergencies happen, and you may find yourself in a circumstance that warrants a cash advance from your credit card. You’ll need to enter a PIN to receive cash, so contact your credit card issuer if you don’t know the preset PIN. You should also have the option to select a personalized number.

8. Write down the customer service number for your card

In most cases, your credit card’s customer service number is on the back of your card. If it’s not there, be sure to jot it down and keep it in a safe place just in case something goes awry with your payment method.

Additionally, if you’ve got a fancy card that comes with an increased level of customer service, note the number that directly connects you with your white glove hotline. For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express offers a dedicated concierge service with a number different from Amex’s regular customer service number.

It’s easy enough to find these details by navigating the automated phone labyrinth or simply googling, but it doesn’t hurt to have it immediately available.

9. Check your card benefits for travel perks

Travel credit cards can do more than just waive foreign transaction fees and extract cash from ATMs; they can revolutionize the quality of your travel. Depending on the credit card you’ve got, you could benefit from:

  • Airport lounge access. There are multiple lounge networks comprising thousands of lounges worldwide, many offering free food and alcohol. With the right credit card, you can access most of these lounges for free as often as you want (with an active boarding pass).
  • Trusted traveler programs. Many credit cards provide credit toward the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fees. Membership to either of these programs means you (usually) won’t have to remove your shoes and belt at airport security.
  • Travel insurance. When you use your qualifying travel rewards credit card to reserve your travel, you’ll receive travel insurance benefits like trip delay protection, travel accident insurance, primary rental car insurance, and more.
  • Elite status perks. Many credit cards confer elite status benefits for specific airline and hotel brands. Holding one such card may be enough to influence which hotel brands you stay with—or which airlines you fly.
  • Statement credits. The top travel credit cards offer annual credits to offset common travel purchases, such as airfare, hotel stays, rental cars, and baggage fees.

10. Choose a widely accepted payment network

A payment network is a platform that credit card issuers use to process your credit card transactions. Common payment networks in the U.S. include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.

Outside the U.S., however, don’t be so confident that your payment network will be as ubiquitous. Visa and Mastercard tend to have virtually universal acceptance. American Express and Discover are a different story—though they are still accepted in many countries.

Top credit cards for international travel

If you’re looking for the best travel credit cards to complement your globetrotting lifestyle, you’ve got a slew of high-powered options to choose from. You need to ask yourself one question as you decide: Do the travel benefits outweigh the annual fee?

For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card charges a $95 annual fee. Beyond waived foreign transaction fees, the card’s main draw is its travel coverages. The card’s trip delay insurance, baggage delay insurance, and primary rental car insurance alone can save you many hundreds of dollars during your trip. But if you don’t value trip delay insurance, the card isn’t worth it for you.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card charges a $395 annual fee. But it comes with up to $300 back annually for bookings made through Capital One Travel l and 10,000 bonus miles (equal to $100 towards travel) every year, starting on your first anniversary. That’s an easy $400 in free travel each year, which more than offsets the card’s annual fee.

In other words, this card is an easy win if you regularly spend at least $400 on travel each year. You can then enjoy the card’s complimentary access to 1,500+ lounges through Priority Pass, elite travel insurance, and application reimbursement for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry without the guilt of an imposing annual fee weighing on your conscience.

The takeaway

There are quite a number of credit card-related details to consider before your international trip. Taking a few precautionary measures, such as opening a travel-centric credit card, setting a PIN, and bringing along more than one card can go a long way toward making your trip a smooth one.

Please note that card details are accurate as of the publish date but are subject to change at any time at the issuer’s discretion. Before applying, please contact the card issuer to verify rates, fees, and benefits.

When talking about points, I often stress the importance of building up a diversified portfolio of points and miles. This gives you the most flexibility, both for earning lucrative bonuses and increasing your redemption opportunities to book award travel. Credit cards are a huge part of this as they're the single most lucrative source of points and miles, but they can also provide valuable perks and benefits depending on the network (such as Mastercard, Visa and American Express ). When traveling, I usually like carrying a Mastercard and Visa on me as they're accepted more than American Express internationally.

There are three levels of the Mastercard program: Mastercard, World Mastercard and World Elite Mastercard. World Mastercards are the midlevel cards in the Mastercard portfolio, and they come with an array of benefits and perks geared toward travelers.

Free nights, upgrades and savings on partner travel

Last but not least, you'll enjoy free nights at partner hotels, upgrades on car rentals, and savings on air, private jets and RVs. Some of Mastercard's partners include Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, IHG and Hyatt, so you could potentially snag some awesome perks by booking through the Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle program.

Bottom line

Here at TPG, we love talking about credit card perks such as Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit and complimentary hotel elite status. However, you don't want to sleep on perks that are offered by the card network itself. In this case, Mastercard offers numerous benefits for World Mastercard holders that can add up over time. Next time you travel, you'll want to consult the Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle program first or even get free delivery on your DoorDash orders — just because you can.

As anyone running a business can attest, there are a lot of monthly costs. One expenditure there’s just no avoiding, however, is the phone bill.

But did you know that The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express has a neat statement credit for eligible wireless telephone services, which includes cell phone bills?

Read on to see how you can maximize the wireless credit benefit and how your business can save up to $120 per year.

With the Amex Business Platinum card , you’ll receive up to $120 in statement credits per year (up to $10 back per month) for wireless telephone service purchases made directly with a wireless provider in the U.S. You’ll need to enroll in this benefit in order to receive the statement credit.

You’ll want to make sure you’re making the correct purchases (more down below), or you won’t receive the statement credit. You’re only eligible for the statement credit on purchases for monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider.

The easiest way to earn this statement credit is by paying your phone bill using your Amex Business Platinum card. For instance, if your phone bill costs $140 per month, you’ll save $10 monthly (dropping your bill to $130) simply by moving the bill over to your Amex Business Platinum card.

There aren’t too many restrictions on who can use the benefit, as the primary cardmember and employee card members are eligible for the monthly statement credit. However, you’re still only eligible for up to $10 in statement credits per month.

The following purchases won’t count:

  • Bundled services
  • Cellular repair services
  • Electronics purchases
  • Hardware purchases
  • Purchases from authorized retailers, resellers, or third-party sellers
  • VoIP services

Enrolling in the benefit is simple. First, you will log into your Amex online account . On the top menu, click Rewards & Benefits , then click View All Benefits on the right-hand side of the blue ribbon near the top of the page.

Amex Benefits Page

You’ll then see the Wireless Credit box. Click that button, hit Get Started , and you’ll be enrolled in no time.

Wireless credit Amex Business Platinum

And that’s it! You’ll receive your statement credit 6 to 8 weeks after an eligible purchase is charged to your card, but in our experience, statement credits typically post sooner than then.

By paying for your wireless services with your Amex Business Platinum card, you’ll receive up to $1,600 in cell phone protection . The coverage is for up to $800 per claim with a limit of 2 claims per card account each 12-month period, and a $50 deductible applied to each claim.

Your monthly cell bill must be charged to your eligible card, and the coverage begins on the first day of the month following the initial card payment.

Covered losses include theft of the cell phone , which requires a police report to be filed within 48 hours, and damage to the cell phone , including a cracked screen. There is a list of exclusions, and some additional terms and conditions will apply.

The Amex Business Platinum card is perhaps one of the best business cards to have in your wallet. That’s true whether you run a large business or have just a few employees.

With the Amex Business Platinum card, you’ll earn the following:

  • Earn 5x points on flights and prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com
  • Earn 1.5x points on eligible purchases in key business categories and on purchases of $5,000 or more everywhere else (up to $2 million in these purchases every calendar year)
  • Earn 1x points on other purchases

And those Amex points can go a long way. We value Amex Membership Rewards points at a whopping 2.2 cents each, which is among the highest valuations for a transferable points currency .

One feature unique to the Amex Business Platinum card is when you book eligible flights through AmexTravel.com using Pay with Points, you’ll get a 35% airline bonus (~1.54 cents per point). Note that you can get up to 1 million points back per calendar year.

The Amex Business Platinum card is a true travel card. Similar to The Platinum Card ® from American Express , the card includes Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status upon enrollment. Gold status with both programs gets you benefits such as upgrades (when available) and late checkout .

As an Amex Business Platinum cardholder, you’ll also have access to Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection , offering some of the best hotels in the world, where you’ll receive perks like:

  • Room upgrade upon arrival (when available)
  • Daily breakfast for 2
  • Noon check-in (when available)
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • A unique amenity valued at $100, like a food and beverage credit

After enrollment, you’ll also get rental car perks with Avis , Hertz , and National Car Rental . With Hertz, you’ll also receive top-tier President’s Circle status , which confers perks such as a 24-hour advance reservation airport guarantee and guaranteed 1-class upgrades.

The Amex Business Platinum card is also an excellent travel card to have at the airport. That’s because you have American Express Global Lounge Collection access, which means you can visit these airport lounges worldwide (some lounges may have restrictions):

  • Centurion Lounges in the U.S. and abroad
  • Delta Sky Clubs (when flying Delta on the same day)
  • Escape Lounges — The Centurion Studio Partner
  • Select Lufthansa Lounges (when flying Lufthansa on the same day)
  • Plaza Premium Lounges
  • Priority Pass lounges upon enrollment
  • Select Virgin Clubhouse lounges

Similar to the Amex Platinum card, the Amex Business Platinum card comes with a slew of statement credits , though they are more focused on business purchases. With the Amex Business Platinum card, you’ll receive the following each year:

  • Up to $400 in Dell credits (enrollment required)
  • Up to $360 in Indeed credits (enrollment required)
  • Up to $200 in airline fee credits (enrollment required)
  • Up to $189 in CLEAR Plus credits
  • Up to $150 in Adobe credits (enrollment required)
  • Up to $100 Global Entry or up to $85 TSA PreCheck application fee statement credit

You’ll also have several travel protections when holding the card, such as trip delay insurance, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, baggage insurance, and car rental insurance .

Finally, the Amex Business Platinum card boasts several shopping benefits like Global Dining Access by Resy (offering exclusive reservations), purchase protection (up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per year), and extended warranty protection.

Given the other benefits of the Amex Business Platinum card , the wireless credit might not be a benefit you utilize or have even heard of. But it’s a great way to save a bit of money — something every business owner is mindful of — especially when using it on your phone bill purchases.

It’s a pretty simple process — you’ll register for the benefit, make your eligible purchase using your Amex Business Platinum card, and then wait for the statement credit to post. We hope this guide to using the Wireless Credit for the Amex Business Platinum card was helpful!

Methodology to choose the best travel credit cards

NerdWallet Canada selects the best travel rewards credit cards based on overall consumer value as well as their suitability for specific kinds of travellers. Factors in our  evaluation methodology  include each card’s annual fee, foreign transaction fees, rewards earning rates, ease of use, redemption options, domestic and international acceptance, promotional APR period, bonus offers, insurance offers, and cardholder perks such as automatic statement credits and airport lounge access.

Summary of the best travel credit cards

By barry choi and shannon terrell.

Travel rewards credit cards earn points or miles as a reward for making eligible purchases. The type and rate of rewards you earn depends on the travel credit card you have. Additionally, how you can use those rewards may depend on the loyalty program associated with your card.

Why get a travel credit card?

Travel rewards credit cards account for 22% of credit cards in Canada, according to a 2021 report by Payments Canada. Outside reduced travel costs, travel cards can offer travel insurance, airport lounge access , baggage fee discounts, no foreign transaction fees and more. The right travel credit card can help you plan trips and access upgraded services that may have once been out of reach.

Types of travel credit cards in Canada

Generally speaking, there are three different categories of travel rewards credit cards. Knowing how they differ will help you determine what card is best for you.

General travel rewards credit cards

If you’re not loyal to one specific airline or hotel chain, then a general travel rewards program is something that will interest you. The points you earn can typically be used for any type of travel redemption, such as airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises, and even vacation packages. Since your points don’t belong to one specific program, you have more options.

Some general travel rewards credit cards only allow you to use your points when booking travel through their online portal, while others let you use your points for any travel purchases you charge to your card.

Airline rewards credit cards

Airline credit cards allow you to earn points or miles for a specific airline. What’s interesting about airline credit cards is that the points you earn can usually be used on any airline that’s part of their network.

For example, Aeroplan is the loyalty program for Air Canada. Even if you don’t have one of the best Aeroplan credit cards, you can redeem your points for a flight on any carrier that’s part of the Star Alliance network. There are also some general travel rewards programs, such as Air Miles , that also earn miles and can offer some additional value.

Depending on the tier of your airline rewards credit card, you may get additional perks such as free checked bags, priority boarding and increased status. Having an airline credit card is highly lucrative if you frequently fly with one airline or network.

Hotel rewards credit cards

While some people love the idea of free flights, getting a luxury stay at a nice hotel appeals to other people. Some would argue that hotel rewards are better than airline rewards since some hotel chains have a greater reach. For example, Marriott has over 7,000 properties in 130+ countries, so no matter where you’re travelling, it won’t be hard to find a room where you can use your points.

Hotel rewards credit cards will also typically include benefits that will make your stay more comfortable. For instance, you could get early check-in and late check-out. You could also get free high speed WiFi or enhanced status.

Additional rewards to look for in a travel card

Besides the main rewards categories that come with travel credit cards, consider the additional perks that are included. These extra perks can often be the thing that helps you choose one card over another.

Consider the following benefits that often come with travel rewards credit cards:

  • Free checked bags. Airlines charge anywhere from $30-$60 per checked bag, each way, so getting free checked bags can save you a fair amount of money.
  • Airport lounge access. Some credit cards include airport lounge access , plus free annual lounge passes. These benefits could easily have a value of over $300, so it can offset any annual fee you might pay.
  • Travel insurance. An extensive travel insurance package is included on some credit cards. This could cover things such as medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and more.
  • No foreign transaction fees. Many credit cards charge a 2.5% fee when you make a purchase in any currency that’s not Canadian dollars. You simply pay the straight exchange rate if your card has no foreign transaction fees .
  • Extended warranty. Many credit cards will lengthen your warranty up to one additional year as long as you charge the full cost of the purchase to your card.
  • Price protection. If you find a lower price after making a purchase, some credit cards will give you back the difference if it falls within a specific period.
  • Concierge service. A credit card concierge can help you with basic tasks such as booking travel, ordering fits and securing event tickets.

As you can see, the list of additional benefits you can get with your travel rewards credit cards can be pretty extensive. Some of the best travel credit cards in Canada will have many of the above benefits, but not all of them. Always prioritize the perks that are important to you when applying for a credit card .

Travel credit card pros and cons

  • Earn points or miles to reduce travel costs, like discounted flights and hotel stays.
  • Get additional perks, like travel insurance, discounted baggage fees, airport lounge access and more.
  • Earn introductory bonus points when you sign up for certain travel credit cards.
  • Some cards let you transfer points to airline and hotel loyalty programs.
  • Many travel credit cards carry annual fees.
  • Blackout periods may restrict when you can redeem your points.
  • Introductory bonus offers may require you to spend a large sum of money in a short period of time.
  • Some travel rewards points expire if you don’t use them quickly enough.

Using travel rewards

Understanding travel credit card earn rates.

The earn rate on a travel credit card is the number of rewards points or miles you earn on each dollar spent.

Some cards offer a flat rate, meaning you earn the same rewards on every purchase. For example, you may earn 2 points for every $1 you spend with your card.

Most rewards credit cards have a tiered rewards structure when making purchases. The type of structure can vary quite a bit between cards. For example, you may have an accelerated earn rate on purchases made in certain categories, such as travel, groceries, gas and drugstores. All other purchases will use the lower base earn rate.

Ideally, you want to choose a credit card with an accelerated earn rate that is aligned with your spending habits.

“You have to make sure the loyalty program is going to let you do what you want,” says Laura Scheck, vice president of credit cards at Scotiabank. “Or else you’ll end up with points that you can’t necessarily use. And no one wants to be in that situation. Points are fun!”

Additionally, travel credit cards may deliver additional points or miles when you make purchases with their main partner, if they have one. For example, an Aeroplan credit card gives you an accelerated earn rate on Air Canada purchases. Some loyalty programs even have a network of partners where you can earn additional points or miles.

How to calculate the value of travel credit card points

Knowing how to calculate the value of your points or miles is essential since not every redemption value is the same. By establishing a baseline value for your points, you can decide if specific redemptions are worth it — even if you’re not getting the maximum value.

The formula used to determine the value of one point is as follows:

Cash value of the redemption x 100 / number of points required = Cost per point

Let’s say you want to fly from Vancouver to Toronto, and it’s going to cost $585 in cash, or 25,000 Aeroplan points, plus $75 in taxes. You would use the following formula. Note that since you have to pay $75 in taxes, you’d have to subtract that amount from the cash value for an accurate assessment.

$510 x 100 / 25,000 = 2.04 cents per point

This formula can be applied to any redemption regardless of the loyalty program. For example, let’s say you want to redeem 13,400 points for a $100 gift card. Your formula would be the following:

$100 x 100 / 13,400 = .75 cents per point

The flight is a better bang for your points if these redemption options are available with the same program.

Do travel rewards points ever expire?

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a loyalty program member or how many points you’ve accumulated; you can lose everything if you’re not paying attention.

Generally speaking, most loyalty programs that belong to an airline or hotel have a defined expiry date of 12 – 18 months. However, that only applies if there’s been no account activity in your account during that time. If you earn or redeem just one point during that time, your clock would reset. Even if you’re not travelling anytime soon, you could make a small redemption or donate some points to ensure you don’t lose the rest of your points.

When it comes to bank credit card rewards programs, it’s unlikely your points will expire as long as your credit card account is in good standing. Your account would only fall out of good standing if it becomes delinquent or your credit card is used for fraudulent activity.

How to redeem travel credit card rewards

Some credit card rewards programs only let you redeem points or miles through their rewards portals. Others allow point redemption for any eligible purchase you make with your credit card.

Rewards programs offered through banks typically have their own website where you can make redemptions. They often have separate tabs where you can choose from travel, gift cards, merchandise, and financial rewards. While this can be handy, you’re typically limited to their offerings — what you see is what you get.

Airline and hotel loyalty programs will almost always allow you to redeem your points or miles directly on their website or mobile app. When searching for flights or hotels, you’ll likely see a box that says “use points.” The prices displayed will be in points, so you’ll know exactly how much you’ll need to make a redemption.

Knowing where to go to redeem your points is important, but you may also want to familiarize yourself with the different point redemption systems.

Travel reward point redemption options

Not all rewards programs are created equal, especially when it comes time to cash in your travel points. These three redemption models tend to be the most popular among travel credit cards:

Consistent points

Consistent points hold a constant value, regardless of season or travel destination. This point redemption model is the most transparent and user-friendly of the three.

Fluctuating points

The value of fluctuating points can be impacted by several factors, including travel destination and time of year. A point may carry less value when travelling during peak season instead of in the off-season. This model can make it challenging to determine the value of your points when trip planning. Look for any provider-issued charts or tables that outline what factors impact the value of your points.

Point transfers

Point transfers let you transfer points to affiliated rewards programs. This model may be useful for those trying to take advantage of multiple rewards programs. The catch? The value of your points may be different once they’ve been transferred, which means you’ll need to figure out the transfer ratio before you make a decision.

What to know about credit card travel insurance

For many, travel insurance is essential — especially when venturing outside Canada. While it’s likely the last thing you want to worry about when on vacation, medical emergencies happen. And your federal, provincial and territorial health plans may not cover the medical expenses you incur while travelling. That’s where travel insurance comes in.

Not only does travel insurance help cover medical expenses, it can also offer trip cancellation coverage, vehicle damage insurance, flight delay insurance and more.

You can get travel insurance from a third party, like a travel agent or insurance provider, but many travel credit cards offer it , too — and at no added cost to the cardholder.

Out-of-province travel emergency medical insurance

Travel medical insurance isn’t only for those travelling outside Canada; it can also provide coverage for those exploring another province or territory. Your provincial plan may not extend to emergency medical expenses incurred out of province. Out-of-province medical insurance can provide coverage for a range of medical needs and services, from prescription medication to emergency evacuations and hospital stays.

If your travel card offers out-of-province medical insurance, ask your provider about coverage limitations. Your medical expenses may not be covered if they’re the result of a pre-existing medical condition or high-risk activity, like bungee jumping or motorized racing.

Travel accident insurance

This type of insurance can be useful in the event of accidental injury or death while travelling on public or ticketed transportation, sometimes referred to as a common carrier. Some policies only cover accidents that happen on airplanes while others encompass a wider range of common transports, like trains, ships and buses.

Travel interruption/cancellation insurance

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses non-refundable travel expenses if your trip gets cancelled. Eligible cancellation circumstances may include dangerous weather conditions, pregnancy complications or the death of an immediate family member.

Trip interruption coverage activates once you’ve departed and reimburses non-refundable travel expenses if your trip is cut short. Again, not every circumstance will qualify for trip interruption coverage. Covered reasons for heading home ahead of schedule are often similar to those that qualify for cancellation coverage.

Flight delay insurance

Flight delays are frustrating, but they happen. If your flight is postponed and you need to book a place to stay or grab a bite to eat while you wait, flight delay insurance may reimburse those costs.

Lost/delayed baggage insurance

If your bags are delayed, this type of insurance will cover the cost of essential items you may need to purchase — like clothes or toiletries — while you wait for your bags to arrive. And if your bags are lost outright, you may be covered up to a predetermined amount for your lost property.

Rental car collision/loss damage insurance

If you plan to rent a car on your next trip, collision and damage insurance may come in handy. This insurance covers costs associated with theft or damage to your rental car. But it doesn’t replace liability insurance — the insurance that provides coverage if you injure someone or damage another vehicle on the road.

Your personal auto insurance policy may come with liability insurance that extends to rental vehicles, but contact your insurance provider to confirm you’re covered before you hit the road.

To take advantage of your credit card’s collision and damage insurance, you’ll need to decline coverage offered by your car rental company.

Hotel/motel burglary insurance

If your hotel or motel room is broken into while on the road, this coverage will reimburse you for the loss of stolen goods up to a set amount. Not all stolen items may be eligible for reimbursement.

How to choose the right travel credit card

Every credit card is good for at least one thing, so deciding on which card is best for you can be difficult. Here are some important criteria you can use to compare different travel credit card options.

Welcome bonus

If you’re trying to decide between several travel cards with similar rewards, the tiebreaker can often be the sign up bonus. Some credit cards offer a generous welcome offer that covers the annual fee or jumpstarts your rewards collection with thousands of free points or miles.

Every credit card has a base earn rate, but many of the best travel credit cards in Canada have an increased earn rate for specific bonus categories — like the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card , which offers up to 8x the points per dollar spent on travel through its online Expedia portal.

If you have a general travel credit card, you could earn extra points on categories such as groceries, gas, pharmacies and more, like the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card , which offers 2x the points on food, drink and groceries . The earn rate is essential since choosing a card that lines up with your spending habits can quickly increase the number of points or miles you earn.

If you’re firmly against paying an annual fee for your credit card, you’ll instantly narrow down your choices. That said, there are some instances where an annual fee is worth the cost . Travel credit cards with a yearly fee typically have more benefits than their fee-free counterparts.

Reward flexibility

Having a lot of points is meaningless if it’s hard to redeem them. Look for a loyalty or rewards program where you know you’ll be able to use your points without much trouble. This means programs with no blackout dates and multiple redemption options.

You’ll also want to consider whether the program has any transfer partners, as that’s another way to use your points. Additionally, knowing if and when your points expire is key to ensuring you don’t lose your hard-earned rewards.

Perks and benefits

Besides the type of rewards, welcome bonus and earn rate, additional perks may sweeten the deal and sway your decision.

“Lounge access is always very important,” says Scheck. “It’s nice to have as you’re catching your flight. It’s a little bit quieter — a bit of an oasis from the rest of the airport.”

Another make-or-break consideration? Foreign transaction fees. Scheck says they can really add up, especially if you’re making a lot of transactions while travelling. A card with no transaction fees, like the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, can help you save in the long run.

Scout for travel card perks when comparing your options:

  • Seat upgrades.
  • Room upgrades.
  • Premium lounge passes.
  • Entertainment ticket presale access.
  • Car rental discounts.
  • Priority check-in and boarding.
  • Various types of credit card insurance.

New allegations of possible affair between Georgia DA Fani Willis and Trump case prosecutor

travel services de mastercard

A second person on Friday alleged that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had an improper relationship with the private Atlanta lawyer Willis hired to lead the election fraud case against former President Donald Trump and 14 alleged co-conspirators.

Joycelyn Wade, the estranged wife of special prosecutor Nathan Wade, said in a court filing in their divorce case that Wade bought airline tickets in his name – and Willis’s – for trips to San Francisco and Miami and possibly elsewhere in 2022 and 2023. Nathan Wade was working on the high-profile case at the time and was married to Joycelyn Wade.

Since the allegations first surfaced in a court filing earlier this month, speculation has been rampant about whether the alleged relationship between Willis and Wade could derail, delay or torpedo the case outright.

The new court filing, which includes what it says are Nathan Wade's credit card statements, appears to bolster at least some of the bombshell allegations made Jan. 8 by a Trump co-defendant in the election fraud case, Michael Roman, of an improper and adulterous affair between Nathan Wade and Willis.

Roman alleged that Wade used some of the more than $650,000 he has received from Willis’s office for his work on the Trump election case to fund his lavish lifestyle, including romantic trips with Willis to Napa Valley and Florida and several Caribbean cruises. He also accused Willis of improperly hiring Wade, alleging he is unqualified to oversee the case due to his lack of prosecutorial experience.

Based on the timing of the payments, and the alleged trips together, "the district attorney and the special prosecutor have violated laws regulating the use of public monies, suffer from irreparable conflicts of interest, and have violated their oaths of office under the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct and should be disqualified from prosecuting this matter," Roman's motion in the election fraud case states.

Spokespeople for Willis and the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office did not return USA TODAY emails seeking comment Friday. In the past, they have declined to comment, saying Willis plans to address the allegations via a formal court response . Wade has not spoken publicly about the matter, including when appearing in court.

On Thursday, the judge in the election fraud case, Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, gave Willis until Feb. 2 to respond to the allegations. In his motion, Roman  − a former Trump campaign official − seeks to have Willis, Wade and the DA’s office dismissed from the case or for it to be thrown out entirely. Lawyers for some other defendants, including Trump, have said they are waiting to hear from Willis before deciding whether to join in Roman's motion, which did not include any proof of his allegations.

McAfee also scheduled a Feb. 15 hearing – likely to be televised − to hear from Willis about Roman’s accusations.

Also, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners launched an inquiry Friday over Willis's possible misuse of county funds by hiring Wade and allegedly accepting valuable gifts such as paid joint trips from him. The move by County Commissioner Bob Ellis, in his capacity as Audit Committee Chair, "is a request for information at this stage, not an investigation," Ellis told USA TODAY Friday night. The move was first reported by The Washington Post.

"Separate from any potential inquiry by the State of Georgia, this situation requires confirmation of whether County funds provided for the operation of your office and its prosecutorial function were used in an appropriate manner, and whether any payments of County funds to Mr. Wade were converted to your personal gain in the form of subsidized travel or other gifts," Ellis wrote, according to a copy obtained by USA TODAY.

Ellis asked Willis for all contracts and service agreements with special prosecutors dating back to January 2021, invoices for all services, expenses, costs and fees submitted for payment by Wade and other special prosecutors, and details about the "relevant professional experience needed or required for each special prosecutor" hired by Willis.

In her new filing in the divorce case, Joycelyn Wade argues that she should be allowed to depose Willis about her relationship with Nathan Wade and their alleged travels together. Willis has fought that effort, saying in an emergency motion Thursday that she knows nothing of substance that could be relevant in the divorce proceedings.

Those claims by Willis are “disingenuous” and “specious,” because the district attorney “has information and knowledge directly relevant to alleged conduct of the Plaintiff that would be considered by the Court as to equitable division of the marital estate, dissipation of marital assets, and spousal support,” according to a court motion filed Friday by Andrea Dyer Hastings, Joycelyn Wade’s divorce lawyer.

Nathan Wade filed for divorce from his longtime wife on Nov. 2, 2021, just one day after Willis hired him as special prosecutor in the sprawling case investigating whether Trump and others illegally conspired to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia that Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden.

In her court filing Friday, Hastings said Nathan Wade didn’t tell his wife about his appointment as special counsel, or about the “substantial income he has been receiving throughout this divorce case as a result” of that appointment.

What’s more, Hastings alleged, Nathan Wade left his estranged wife “with little means of financial support while simultaneously spending tens of thousands of dollars per month on a very lavish lifestyle” that included the alleged trips with Willis.

“The evidence is clear that Ms. Willis was an intended travel partner for at least some of these trips as indicated by flights he purchased for her to accompany him,” according to Hastings’ motion, which attached copies of credit card statements showing the purchase of plane tickets as Exhibit A.

As a result, “Defendant seeks to depose Ms. Willis in order to determine details surrounding her romantic affair with Plaintiff, as there appears to be no reasonable explanation for their travels apart from a romantic relationship,” Hastings argued.

"Contrary to Ms. Willis's belief, the Defendant is not utilizing the deposition to harass her," the motions also says, "but rather to seek pertinent information from her husband's paramour regarding her relationship with Plaintiff and the extent of the Plaintiff's financial involvement in the same."

Such an inquiry into a suspected affair would be relevant in the divorce proceedings, Hastings said, because under Georgia law, “the conduct of the parties, including evidence of a spouse's alleged adultery” is relevant and admissible and effect the equitable division of property.

Nathan Wade moved successfully to have records in the divorce case sealed in Cobb County Superior Court. But his wife's filing Friday was “briefly posted publicly” through PeachCourt, Georgia's document access and electronic filing portal, according to the Georgia Strategy Group, a public relations firm working with Joycelyn Wade’s law firm.

“That is how others obtained it,” the group said in a statement Friday evening to USA TODAY. “Because it was already public, we believe it's only fair to give all journalists the same access to the filing.”

The case against Trump initially included 18 codefendants. Four of them have since entered into plea deals with Willis’s office in exchange for their cooperation.

The 14 others charged in the case range from some local Georgia officials all the way up to Roman, a Trump campaign official in 2020 and 2016, former Trump lawyer and close associate Rudy Giuliani and Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

In her first and much-anticipated remarks during a guest church sermon on Sunday, Willis admitted being an “imperfect” and even “flawed” human being who makes mistakes. She also said she has been the victim of numerous threats and has received a lot of abuse lately that has included racial slurs.

But in her remarks at the Big Bethel A.M.E. Church in Atlanta, Willis did not address some of the more salacious accusations in Roman’s motion.

Without mentioning him by name, Willis said Wade was not only a “great friend” but an experienced and well-respected lawyer with the “impeccable” credentials needed to be a special prosecutor overseeing the case.

Willis also talked about how she hired two other lawyers – a white man and a white woman – to help her prosecute the case. Describing each one as a “superstar,” she asked, "Isn't it them playing the race card when they only question one?”

New Castle, Kent counties report 5+ inches of snow as state issues travel advisory

A number of communities in New Castle and Kent counties are now seeing snow accumulation of more than 5 inches, prompting the Delaware Department of Transportation and the Delaware Emergency Management Agency to issue a travel advisory.

The snow, which had reached 5.8 inches in Blackbird, 5.3 inches in New Castle, 5.3 inches in Smyrna and 5.1 inches in Talleyville as of 9:15 p.m. Friday, is expected to continue falling throughout the evening.

Given the continued precipitation, DelDOT and DEMA are urging residents to stay off the roads.

Both agencies said the advisory is not an official driving warning, which is issued during inclement weather. A Level 1 warning already had been issued this week , however.

The Friday afternoon advisory is "meant to caution motorists of adverse weather conditions and to stay off roads if possible. If driving is necessary, motorists are urged to use caution and common sense," a news release said.

According to the National Weather Service, radar shows "moderate to occasionally heavy snow continuing to move across the area." The agency has predicted as much as 6 inches of snow in Kent and New Castle counties.

The weather agency said the region's snow is mostly centered along the I-95 corridor from Wilmington to Philadelphia to Trenton. The weather service also said it's possible to see snowfall rates of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour, which could significantly reduce the road visibility to a half-mile to a quarter of a mile.

DRIVING IN THE SNOW: Bad weather can lead to various driving restrictions. Here's what to know in Delaware

Where is it accumulating?

Flurries, which began as early as 5 a.m. on Friday, have since turned into heavier snow, with an inch or more falling in an hour in some areas of Kent County.

While the southernmost part of Sussex County has seen little snow, the rest of that county has reported some accumulation. Ellendale has seen the most, with 4 inches.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Delaware beaches until 10 p.m., predicting up to an inch of snow and slippery roads.

These are Delaware snow accumulation amounts as of 9:15 p.m. Friday:

New Castle County

  • Blackbird - 5.8 inches
  • Claymont - 5 inches
  • Greenville - 4.2 inches
  • Glasgow - 4.6 inches
  • Hockessin - 4 inches
  • New Castle - 5.3 inches
  • Newark - 4.2 inches
  • Port Penn - 3.9 inches
  • Prices Corner - 4.5 inches
  • Talleyville - 5.1 inches
  • White Clay - 4.5 inches

Kent County

  • Dover - 5 inches
  • Frederica - 4 inches
  • Harrington - 3.9 inches
  • Smyrna - 5.3 inches
  • West Dover - 5.1 inches
  • Woodside - 5.1 inches

Sussex County

  • Bethany Beach - Trace amounts of snow
  • Bridgeville - 3.2 inches
  • Dagsboro - 2 inches
  • Ellendale - 4 inches
  • Laurel - 2.1 inches
  • Lewes - 2.3 inches
  • Nassau - 2.4 inches
  • Seaford - 2.4 inches
  • Stockley - 2.8 inches

Temperatures will rapidly drop into the teens late Friday night causing untreated roads to become icy and dangerous. Areas of blowing snow are possible over the weekend.

Delaware has already lowered the speed limit on I-495 from 65 mph to 55 mph. The state Department of Transportation is also reminding motorists that bridges and overpasses freeze before roadways.

"Heavy ice" from a storm earlier this week, caused several crashes on Tuesday resulting in large stretches of highways being closed — including I-495.

Several offices and businesses across the state reported closures and delays.

Snow day: What schools are closed, remote learning on Friday ahead of expected snowstorm

A winter storm warning has been issued for northern Delaware and is in effect until 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The storm is forecast to deliver up to 6 inches of snow to northern Delaware causing hazardous travel conditions.

Sussex County, which is under a winter weather advisory, is experiencing rain with a mix of snow toward the coast.

The latest storm will spread accumulating snow and travel disruptions across 18 states in the Midwest and Northeast, home to 115 million people, into Friday night, AccuWeather meteorologists warn. Arctic air will pour in following the storm, resulting in the coldest winter weekend so far for much of the eastern United States.

The area most likely to pick up a foot of snow, according to AccuWeather, is the mountains of West Virginia.

This area of moderate to heavy snow may extend into southern New Jersey and Delaware, which would put a plowable snowstorm in play from Washington to Philadelphia and to the west. Enough snow to shovel and plow could extend to  Cincinnati ,  Atlantic City and  Dover .

Weekend highs across the state will hover in the mid to upper 20s on Saturday, inching up into the 30s by Sunday. Delaware can expect to see highs in the 50s later next week — around Wednesday and Thursday.

How much snow will Delaware see?

Here are the latest projections for Delaware:

  • Wilmington and the northern part of New Castle County is expected to get 4-6 inches.
  • Southern New Castle County is forecasted to receive 3-4 inches of snow.
  • Northern Kent County is forecasted to receive 2-3 inches.
  • Southern Kent County is forecasted to receive 1-2 inches of snow.
  • Sussex County will receive an inch or less of snow, with the most accumulation possibly in northern Sussex County.
