Why are most yacht charters limited to 12 guests?

Due to international maritime regulations, most yachts are limited to just 12 guests when on a charter – even if the vessel can easily sleep more guests. This is because yachts that carry more than 12 guests are legally considered to be passenger ships under the Passenger Yacht Code (PYC), requiring them to meet a different set of stringent safety and operational standards. However, it is possible for a luxury yacht to accommodate more than 12 guests if they comply with these regulations, offering a unique opportunity for larger groups to enjoy a luxury charter experience.

Charter Yachts Carrying More Than 12 Passengers

Most luxury yachts only carry 12 passengers, by law. Here are ones that can carry larger groups for your event or celebration!

Maritime Law and 12 Passenger Limits

"Why can't I have more than 12 people on this yacht?" is one of  Boatbookings ' most commonly asked questions. With lots of ifs and buts in regards to this question, it can be a minefield when trying to get a simple answer to this seemingly easy question.

In short, if a yacht carries more than 12 passengers, irrespective of whether payment is made, the vessel is considered a 'Passenger Ship' which puts it into a different category from standard luxury yachts. A 'Passenger Ship' must be SOLAS compliant, which requires rigorous testing, training, and surveying (and cost). The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is an international maritime treaty that sets the minimum safety standards worldwide.  

Regardless of the size of the yacht, 9 times out of 10 it will only be licensed to carry 12 passengers. In day charter yachts this can sometimes include the crew, meaning that your group may not be able to exceed 10 or 11. Just to make it even that bit more complicated, some yachts can only be licensed to 6, so it's very important you tell one of our brokers how many people will be on the yacht as this may restrict the number of yachts that are available to you. 

One thing to always remember: Children and babies are still considered passengers!

How can I rent a yacht that carries more than 12 people?

With nearly 20 years of industry expertise, we at Boatbookings have found that the need for yachts to carry more than 12 people is only increasing. Extended families wish to vacation together following time apart, and celebrations are getting more important following missed milestones. So we have searched the seven seas for the best mega yachts that have acquired a special 'more than 12 passenger license' and provide the luxury experience our clients demand.

We have sourced event and large party boats worldwide that do have this special license, and therefore have created a specialist portfolio of boats that meets the needs of your charter. Ultimately, this means that you can extend the guest list, and not have to miss out on inviting your favorite people to your special! These yachts are popular for events in Cannes , such as the Film Festival , MIPIM , or MIPCOM as well as the Monaco Grand Prix !

Additional guests are $50 per person payable on the day of your booking. What You Can Expect: We are here to share the wonderful experience of being out on the water with you! The vessel is well equipped with all the standard amenities such as a large bow sun tanning area, bed, washroom, swim platform and more. My party of 17 had a great time on this boat! The crew were clear with instructions and rules and were also a great time. They provided us with suggestions and different route options while ensuring my guests and I had a great time. The boat itself was exactly as advertised. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to have a great time on the water!

Vince and the first mate were super professional. They knew exactly what they were doing and were very hospitable. It was worth every penny to rent Vince's boat. The boat was very clean and spacious for 12 people. Vince knew exactly what to do to deal with the mini rain storms we had passing, the rain did not hinder on our experience at all. Highly recommend booking Vince's boat!

A group of mine had the pleasure of enjoying ourselves on Vince’s boat to end off the summer in the most perfect way. The boat is as shown in the photos and then some (great speakers on board!!). I can’t wait to book with Vince again in the future.

In addition to its versatility, the RIB is highly regarded for its rigid hull, which offers stability and robustness when sailing, even when faced with waves when the weather becomes more inclement and rough.

With its foldable inflatable tube, it is very practical to store and transport to the water wherever you want.

The stipulations basically require safety boats with Titanic parameters and additional requirements that private boat owners are not willing to fulfill.

You’re either looking for a small cruise ship or for one of the very few crewed yacht charters that fulfill the bureaucratic necessities for a commercial license to host more than 12 guests for a yacht charter in Greek island clusters.

Louis was great from beginning to end and walked me through the whole process. He helped me find a great boat that fit within our time and cost preferences. He explained the differences between the different builds and the pros and cons. Once we selected the boat, he explained and walked me through the whole booking process and answered all my questions. Finally, he checked in with me before, during, and after the charter to make sure everything met our expectations. The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Carinthia VII

Originally constructed in 2002, the award-winning Carinthia VII was recently remodeled and reimagined specifically for private charters. The 319-foot ship spans six decks and can accommodate up to 12 guests in eight staterooms. Among the ship’s amenities are two bars, a fully equipped gym and an outdoor projection screen that allows for an “immersive cinematic experience like no other.” The cost of chartering the Carinthia VII is $1,525,700 during both the winter and summer seasons.

The Lady S yacht boasts a number of exciting water toys, including jet skis, water skis, wakeboards and kayaks for athletic guests on the 305-foot ship. For those who prefer more indoor-oriented activities, however, you can also catch a film on the ship’s IMAX Dolby cinema — the first of its kind on any yacht in the world. Accommodating 12 guests, in seven cabins, the cost of chartering the Lady S begins at $1,743,328 a week.

The interior of the Ahpo yacht seems more reminiscent of a luxury hotel than a simple ship. Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard Lürssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

500EXP Para Bellum

This 154-foot-long yacht can accommodate up to 12 travelers in its six cabins, along with up to 10 crew members. The ship was specially designed to enable “guests a 360-degree experience and relationship with the sea” through its unique stern and sundeck that allow travelers to safely stand “almost at sea level,” according to its Italian manufacturer San Lorenzo . Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. The 367-foot long ship features five decks and can accommodate 36 guests in 19 cabins. The Renaissance’s amenities include a 19-seat movie theater, a sushi-bar, and a full spa deck featuring a wellness area, plunge pools and a hair salon. The cost of chartering the ship from Burgess Yachts ranges from $3,269,280 to $3,814,160 a week.

Dave Portnoy Recalls Dramatic U.S. Coast Guard Boat Rescue: I Was 'Tom Hanks in Castaway '

The Barstool Sports founder shared new details about his recent ordeal on the water, which took place off the coast of Nantucket, Mass.

Dave Portnoy 's experience adrift at sea was more harrowing than he first let on.

In the July 17 episode of BFFs: Dave Portnoy, Josh Richards and Bri Chickenfry , Portnoy, 47, recounted his misadventure on the water , fittingly seated in front of a sign that says "don't give up the ship," and wearing a captain's hat.

As the story goes, his parents were visiting and his mom wanted to see his boat.

“Captain Dave unhooked himself to the buoy before he turned the boat on to make sure the boat wasn’t dead. Well no power, no radio, no anchor, no nothing. Heavy heavy winds," Portnoy shared in a video on X (formerly Twitter) following the incident. He elaborated on the situation more during the BFFs episode, recalling that he hadn't brought his cell phone with him since he figured he would be right back.

Portnoy said the boat, a 24-foot Boston Whaler, likely "broke free" from the buoy, resulting in the aforementioned heavy winds drifting the vessel into the middle of Nantucket Harbor and leaving him pushing off of other boats on the water to avoid collisions.

After setting off his flare gun to signal distress, a girl in a dinghy approached his vessel and climbed aboard. When she realized who he was, she apparently said that she wished she had her phone to make a TikTok, but Portnoy mentioned he was thrilled she didn't.

At that point, the media personality said he felt like "Tom Hanks in Castaway ." Luckily, the girl on the dinghy had a radio and called the Coast Guard.

"The Coast Guard showed up and wheeled me in" he recounted. Meanwhile, his parents were waving at him from the shore, unsure of what was happening.

Portnoy also gave some context about his boating experience. "It's my third time on this boat. I'm not like, this crazy boat-savvy guy," he explained. As the Barstool Sports founder and the boat drifted out further from the harbor, he claimed the water got rocky and he didn't know how to "do the anchor" to stop the boat from moving.

"Literally in my head, I'm like, if this thing makes it out of the harbor," he recalled. "Which, it looked like it was gonna... I may have to abandon ship."

"It was f------ crazy," he concluded, adding that he sent a "strongly-worded" text to the people who sold him the boat.

He also thanked the Coast Guard once more for their rescue. "Thank you to the Coast Guard who served the country bravely and performed that rescue. It was a harrowing day on the high seas for me."

Detroit People Mover to shut down for 11 weeks starting in September

DETROIT -- Getting around Downtown Detroit will be a little more difficult later this summer as officials have announced an impending 11-week closure of the Detroit People Mover. Starting after Labor Day the public transportation service will be shut down so that repairs can be made to an estimated 7,000 feet of track.

The work will mostly be done on corner sections of the route and the adjacent connecting straight tracks. The work will be done along the following seven areas (with the nearest station listed) of the 2.9-mile track:

• Beaubien at Lafayette (Bricktown, Greektown)
• Beaubien and Macomb Str from Monroe around to Randolph (Bricktown, Greektown, and Cadillac Center)
• Park from Woodward to Washington (Grand Circus Park)
• Bagley near Clifford (Times Square)
• Cass near Lafayette (Michigan)
• Atwater and Hart Plaza from Riverwalk to across M-10/Lodge & Jefferson (Financial District)
• Jefferson and Beaubien from Randolph around to Larned (Millender, Renaissance Center)

The tracks being replaced are original pieces that were installed when the People Mover opened 37 years ago. The new pieces are expected to last for a minimum of 15-to-30 years according to officials. The latest project marks the third time work has been done to replace parts of the track, with the prior repairs being made in 2008 and 2016.

Officials estimate that following this latest repair, track work will not be necessary on the People Mover for at least another five years.

The work is being done as part of routine maintenance on the transit system so that it can remain in a “state of good repair” according to industry standards. The nine areas being repaired have been deemed to be in a range where proactive replacement is expected to ensure the People Mover operates properly for years to come.

The $4.985 million project is expected to be complete by Thanksgiving and is being funded through grants provided by the federal and state governments.

An estimated 119,000 trips are made monthly on the People Mover or roughly 3,900 rides per day.

I took a scenic boat tour around Paris that stopped at all the major landmarks, and I can't believe it only cost $20

• I took a boat tour that cruised by nearly all the major monuments in Paris and only cost about $20.
• It was crowded, and some buildings were difficult to see, but I found the guide informative.
• I'd go on the tour again, and I recommend it to anyone visiting Paris .

I'm an American who's lived in Paris for almost three years. After all this time, I still had one thing on my bucket list: Tour the city by boat.

I took advantage of a good summer weather day and went on an hourlong tour with Vedettes de Paris that cost 20 euros, or about $22.

Over 15 million tourists are  set to flood the city this month for the Summer Olympics, and I'm not that interested in fighting through crowds on the streets. Luckily, the boat tour sails by several of Paris' most famous landmarks, so I thought it would be a good way to get my fix from a more comfortable distance.

Here's what it was like.

I made sure I had plenty of time to get to the boat.

I chose to sail on a 6:30 p.m. boat tour and booked my ticket the day before to save some time at the docks.

The tour company recommended arriving 20 minutes early — they start letting people on the boats about 15 minutes before. Because of the construction happening around the Paris Olympics , I gave myself plenty of time to get there.

Being early also allowed me to get a seat on the top deck, where I could enjoy the best view.

We left on time, and a few people missed the boat because they had arrived just a few seconds before departure.

I learned a lot in just one hour.

I've hesitated to go on the boat tour in the past because things like this tend to be very touristy. But I was surprised by how many iconic French monuments I saw and learned about in one hour.

Our path started at the Eiffel Tower and went past Notre Dame before turning around after the Arab World Institute. A live guide spoke about nearly all the monuments we passed in English and French — the company's app also provided translations in other languages.

I wasn't expecting to learn much since I've lived in Paris for a few years, but I actually really enjoyed the guide. The tour was very basic but a good starting point for learning more about a city with so much history.

Although some were slightly obscured, I spotted many of the city's major monuments.

The boat tour started with a history of the Eiffel Tower before passing by the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais. We also passed by the National Assembly, the Louvre Museum , and the French Academy.

Because of the preparations for the Olympics, some areas were slightly obscured by scaffolding. I was barely able to see the obelisk at Place de la Concorde as it was hidden behind stands.

I was also only able to quickly glance at other monuments like the Tour Saint-Jacques before they disappeared behind buildings.

My favorite part was seeing Notre Dame appear after going under a bridge.

Notre Dame is one of my favorite monuments, and seeing it appear as the boat came out from under a bridge was incredible. The cathedral is set to reopen in December after a damaging fire in 2019, and they've made a lot of progress on the restorations.

As we continued down the river, many people were having picnics and dancing by the Seine — a popular summertime activity in Paris . Our guide also pointed out the nearby La Tour d'Argent, a famous restaurant with a rooftop terrace.

I think I figured out how to make the tour even better next time.

Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world , and seeing it by boat felt very special. The boat was a bit crowded, and there were a lot of families and tourists, but that didn't interfere with my experience at all.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the tour. One thing I'd do differently next time is to go around sunset. If you time it right, you'll return as the Eiffel Tower starts sparkling, which happens on the hour after sunset every evening.

Whether you're on a budget or just looking for a good value, the boat tour is worth it. I definitely plan to take any visiting friends and family in the future.

US Coast Guard suspends search for 2 people missing after boat capsizes at Columbia River Bar

ASTORIA, Ore. — Two people remain missing after their boat capsized at the Columbia River Bar Saturday morning. 

On Saturday at around 9:03 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest  took to socials to announce the search for the two missing people has been suspended pending any further developments. 

Officials confirmed to KGW that a 26-foot pleasure craft capsized at 10:30 a.m. with five people on board. Three were recovered by the Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment and transferred to emergency medical services. According to the Coast Guard, two of the people recovered were responsive; the third was not. 

Station Cape Disappointment boat crews and Air Station Astoria air crews are searching  for the two missing people. They have at least one aircraft working as of Saturday afternoon and will continue to search through the day. 

There is no information yet as to the circumstances of the capsizing or the current condition of the three rescued people.

Pirates of the Caribbean Under Fire Again After More Guests Offended by Ride

Disneyland Resort’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride is under fire again as some guests have been made uncomfortable by another aspect of the ride. The discussion popped up just weeks after Disneyland Park removed Captain Jack Sparrow from Fantasmic!, which recently reopened after a devastating fire.

Pirates of the Caribbean opened in 1967, 12 years after Disneyland Park . Walt Disney Imagineering has changed the Adventureland attraction multiple times in the decades since and replicated those changes in versions of the ride in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort , Disneyland Paris , and Tokyo Disneyland.

In the mid-2000s, the  Pirates of the Caribbean  film franchise made its way into the ride that started it all. Walt Disney Imagineers installed Captain Jack Sparrow animatronics, modeled after Johnny Depp , throughout the attractions worldwide.

About a decade later, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort announced the most controversial change to Pirates of the Caribbean thus far. They changed a misogynist bride auction scene, turning objectified female animatronics into independent lady pirates.

Nostalgic fans were upset at the significant change, while some progressive Disney Park guests felt Imagineers didn’t go far enough. Last year, one woman went viral for claiming that she felt offended and objectified by the male Pirates of the Caribbean animatronics.

“I just think this is kind of a weird ride,” she explained. “I don’t know… It’s just a little bit rapey.”

The Disney Park guest said she “loved” the ride but was uncomfortable with its implications for female guests.

Some Disney Parks fans agreed and called for the end of Pirates of the Caribbean. Others demanded the ride be left alone.

This week, another Disney Parks fan demanded that Disneyland Resort change Pirates of the Caribbean. This time, the guest claimed that the attraction is ruined in its current condition.

“The fact that boats are nose to tail disrupts the experience,” Redditor u/False_Celebration923 argued. “Bumping the boats in front during the jail/dog/key scene is a mood killer. They need to release boats less often, it’s a persistent issue.”

The Disney Parks fan added that Disney cast members must do more about unruly guests on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

“[I] can’t help but mention the numerous people that talk during the ride, it’s too high,” they said.

Other Disney Parks fans argued that slowing down the popular boat ride would do nothing but increase wait times.

“They don’t need to slow the ride down and make the line take even longer,” said u/tomandshell .

“This is how it’s been since 1968,” u/pquade added. “While some things have changed over the years, very little has changed to the actual flume or dispatch rates. There has always been a slow section with boats backed up starting at the jail and all the way to the lift. Boats have always been backed up there. At least at Disneyland.”

The historic attraction also wasn’t built to accommodate guests transferring in and out of mobility devices.

“Unfortunately older rides don’t have the special loading zones for guests that need to transfer so that just slows everything down,” u/trer24 explained. “And the way they’re built, there is probably no way to build them in. They didn’t foresee the number of people who use mobility scooters nowadays.”

“Same reason [Haunted Mansion] and [Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters] stop so much,” u/UnlikelyLeague8589 agreed. “Just a sign of the times as more people visit with a mobility device.”
