This was the most epic trip. We took our friends and family to Catalina for an amazing day.  Captain Mark was absolutely phenomenal.  He was super fun and accommodating.  He took us around wherever we wanted to go and care of everything. He set up all the toys and made sure we had everything we wanted at all times.  The boat is gorgeous and was spotless.  This was one of the most memorable days ever.  Thank you!!!

Captain Mark and Aperitivo = Only the Best! We had a super fun full life aquatic day for the Huntington Beach Airshow with fam and friends. Yachting with Captain Mark felt more like yachting with family. Mark has a boating CV that is lifelong, outstanding professional experience with a penchant for safety. That said; it was max fun knowing we were in great hands and enjoyed the day with blue skies, blue water and a high caliber Airshow out in the ocean.  I even brought my father whom recently turned 79. He became as youthful as a teenager on full smiles out on the water with Mark showing him the ropes of yacht Aperitivo. All my friends are already calling me to make plans and get their families out on the water. Highly recommended, do not hesitate, get out and yacht; nothing but outstanding family/friends memories that will not be forgotten; thank you Mark, thank you Aperitivo 100%.

We chartered the Aperitivo for my daughter’s 15th birthday. Mark the Captain made us all feel comfortable and safe. His experience and knowledge of the ocean were very apparent. Everyone had a great time swimming, hanging out on the swim float, and paddleboarding. I had no idea how fast 4 hours could go by. The kids all had a blast and were very grateful of their time on the water. If you’re in the Newport Beach area and want to spend some quality time on a luxury vessel, then book this boat. You will not be disappointed!

Newport Beach City Council initiates talks to renovate aging Balboa Yacht Basin

Plans to renovate a roughly 80-year-old marina near Promontory Bay made progress this week when the Newport Beach City Council agreed to formally enter negotiations with a developer selected to take on the project.

The Balboa Yacht Basin at 829 Harbor Island Drive consists of a 172-slip marina, a restaurant called the Galley Cafe, shipyard, marine store, a small park, offices, storage garages and apartment buildings. These were built in the late 1940s and have fallen into disrepair.

“The buildings within the premises have reached the end of their useful life and require substantial investment to continue operating or to renovate,” according to a report from city staff presented to the City Council at its meeting Tuesday night.

During a study session in April, Council received two proposals regarding the future of the Balboa Yacht Basin. Both would have preserved the property’s function as a marina.

One plan presented by Basin Neighborhood Partners, LLC, would have seen the demolition of all structures on the property except for the restaurant and the construction of 10 new single-family homes. The other, put forth by Burnham-Ward Properties, proposed the removal of residential rentals at the marina in addition to the renovation of all of the buildings, expansions to outdoor dining space at the restaurant, an increase in the size and number of office and storage units as well as improvements to a small park at the site, Myrtle Park.

City officials ultimately opted for the latter proposal, and the City Council approved a two-year negotiating agreement with Burnham-Ward Properties. Both parties expect to finalize plans to develop and lease the Balboa Yacht Basin within that time frame.

Negotiations will take into account the concerns of nearby residents, which were voiced at town hall meetings and solicited in a survey. As of Tuesday, 88 people had responded, with comments expressing a desire to limit the height of the renovated buildings and improved safety at the marina and calling for amenities like Wi-Fi, ice machines and a coffee cart at the site. Respondents also sought installation of a sidewalk on Harbor Island Drive.

“Our community along with the beacon bay community will be most impacted by any modifications to the Balboa Yacht Basin,” Will Kenney of the Promontory Bay Community Assn., a group representing 62 local homeowners. “As we stated at the April 9 City Council meeting, our association wants to be involved in what we hope will be a collaborative process with city staff and the selected developer so that the final project, when it is brought to you for review and approval, will be something we can all support.”

Rented the vintage baby blue Moke which made our whole trip! The owners were so awesome and very accommodating! We took it all over the peninsula and over to Balboa as well. Super fun and so cool. We rented a blue cruiser for a couple of hours. What a fun experience. Super friendly and helpful and didn't hesitate to give advice on where to go and how to get there. We took our mini aussie with us (be sure to bring a towel to protect the car interior!). Cruised to Balboa island and used the ferry! So fun and a first for us. Cruised Balboa Island. The electric car was smooth and fun to drive. Even has blue tooth so we could jam to our own tunes. Cruised up and down the "mainland" too to get a sense of where things were. Fun and useful and a great way to see some things without having to give up our beach parking as were able to walk to where Mike is located. It is a kiosk not an actual stand alone business but they were there for the times we booked. Do this to get some open air cruising!

We had such amazing time cruising Newport and Balboa on this little electric car. It's like a little dune buggy with a great little radio so we could listen to Yacht Rock while we were driving. It was fun and the people who checked us in and out were so nice and had a ton of suggestions of what we could do and where to eat. Thank you for the awesome experience

Florida developer Todd Glaser buys second Newport Beach home

$8M deal gives spec builder two summer mansions on the Balboa Peninsula

Florida spec developer Todd Glaser got exactly what he wanted with his latest Newport Beach purchase, ending a more than year-long wait to scoop up the house.

Glaser closed on 1305 East Balboa Boulevard for $8 million, after buying a property about a block away earlier this year, both on the Balboa Peninsula. 

Glaser’s resume is a long one and includes selling Al Capone’s former Miami Beach home and last year’s sale of an Indian Creek spec property in South Florida with an asking price of $69 million, to music producer and DJ David Guetta in an off-market deal.

“We have the cabana on the ocean and then we have the bay house where we could keep a boat or paddleboard and we can swim in the backyard now,” Glaser said of his Newport Beach properties. “Instead of buying a super big $20 million house. I decided it was easier to manage two homes.”

Compass’ Katie Kelly Russell and Laurie Eastman had the listing, while Douglas Elliman’s Josh and Matt Altman represented Glaser. Property records show the seller was a trust tied to the wife of the late Andrew Dossett, an entrepreneur who started boating and yachting businesses.  

The Balboa Boulevard property was technically Glaser’s first choice for a home, after Josh Altman persuaded him to come visit Newport Beach for the first time. It was only available as a rental at the time and the homeowners were uninterested in selling.

Altman walked into the home after seeing work in progress on it to inquire about a purchase.

“They said they would only lease it; they would never sell it. So, over the next 12 to 14 months we kept following up,” Altman said.

The owners eventually changed their minds, with the property hitting the market for $8.2 million in May.

The three-bedroom, fourth-bath Spanish-style home was built in 1930 and features exposed wood beams, arched doorways and hand-painted tiles. It totals 2,634 square feet.

Glaser earlier this year paid $9 million for the 2,550-square-foot house at 1411 East Bay Drive in Newport Beach to serve as a summer property. His family had previously stayed in Nantucket during the summers but sold that home last year.

One Newport address wasn’t enough for the family.

“We have a big family, and the kids bring their friends over,” Glaser said of why a second home made sense. “Day two [of owning East Bay] I walk downstairs and there’s two people sleeping on my couch. I’m 60 years old and I’m past that.”

The 12 teams from five different countries kicked off the competition, hosted by Balboa Yacht Club, on July 23, with races set through Saturday, July 27.

Winds for the start of the race, now in its 57th year, were light, but manageable at 5-to-7 knots.

Tuesday’s racing was round-robin format. The top four yacht races out of Wednesday and Thursday’s competition advance to the best of five semi-final series on Friday and Saturday, with the finals set for Saturday afternoon.

“When they leave here, they say it’s the best regatta they’ve ever been to,” said chair Christine Gribben. “A lot of them come back as coaches when they age out.”

Many of the teams have competed against each other for years. Three are from Australia, two from New Zealand, one from Brazil, one from Ireland, and five from the United States, including four local teams and one from Florida.

“They say, ‘We love each other on land, but the gloves come off when we hit the water,’” Gribben said.

The sailors can compete until they turn 23 years old.

The boats are towed from the harbor to the ocean and event organizers set out robots to mark the race course. The robots have engines and are connected to satellites; they can be controlled remotely by phone, Gribben said.

The group started the event with a ceremony for Florida sailor Liam O’Keefe, a 21-year-old competitor from the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club who died recently.  The boats formed a circle on the race course for the ceremony, the sailors dropping flower leis into the ocean with eight bells ringing,  a traditional tribute that marks the passing of the sailor.

Many of the racers who participated in the Governor’s Cup over the years have gone on to bigger stages, some taking titles at the Congressional Cup in nearby Long Beach or even winning the prestigious America’s Cup.

The invitation-only regatta, often called the Gov Cup, was established in 1967 by the late Chet and Glee Purcell, who felt a competition should be created for younger sailors, similar in format to the internationally-recognized Congressional Cup Regatta. The first international team participated in 1989.

The boats are provided for the regatta. Several different models have been used through the decades. In 2003, the Balboa Yacht Club debuted the “Governor’s Cup 21s,” which were built specifically for Newport Beach’s weather. In 2016, for the 50th anniversary, 12 new “GovCup 22s” were built by the famed yacht designer and BYC staff commodore Alan Andrews.

Spectators can watch the race each afternoon from the beach at 15th Street or the Newport Pier.  The races Saturday and Sunday will be streamed live, go to govcupracing.com for more information.
