Officially known as the Republic of Azerbaijan, it is renowned for spa, religious and health care tourism, with Shahdag Mountains remaining one of its key highlights, widely popular for winter sports such as skiing with state-of-the-art facilities. The capital itself – Baku, is a mix of ancient core, surrounded by 19th-century Parisian-style architecture, and has a modern side to it with its futuristic building on continuous expansion. Visit the palace of Shirvanshahs, rich in artefacts that were discovered in the 15th century. Next on the list is the ancient Muhammad mosque which dates back to the 11th century and depicts its heritage and the classic architecture of that era.  Since the country boundaries the Middle East in the south, there is a subtle touch of Iranian culture, as you will find shops of Persian rugs (carpets) at various locations. The city has two places to explore its heritage – the National Museum of History and the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum. Book an Azerbaijan holiday package to witness the best things this destination has to offer.

Experience Azerbaijan

After exploring Baku for some time, it’s time to head out on the long highway running on the banks of the Caspian Sea, with a brief visit to Upland Park – is a perfect spot for photogenic travellers as it offers a perfect view of the sea on the one side and the view of the city of Baku on the other. Heading, straight on the bank beside the Caspian Sea, you’ll visit the Flame Towers built in 2012 that display a digital graphite of flames. Also, the tower has a restaurant on the top with some great local cuisines.

On your Azerbaijan tour package, you’ll come to realize that it is an affordable country in general. The stays and the local food won’t make a hole in your pocket. Make sure to try Ayran(yoghurt-infused drink) and feijoa juice (juice made from fresh local fruits). There are a lot of vegan options for vegetarian travellers such as veg dolmas(with an option of non-veg as well), vegetarian piti (soup), and Mangal Salaty (fresh salad with a mix of local vegetables). However, if meat is what you like, try the local speciality - Lule kebabs, Saj ichi (popularly known as Barbeque of Azerbaijan). A very famous cuisine, because of its cooking style is “Dashrasi kebab” as it is cooked between stones with local spices offering a very unique taste.

The Countryside

The mud volcanoes are a staple in rural Azerbaijan, the density fluctuates depending on the terrain. However, the majority of them are located on the banks of the Caspian Sea. Furthermore, another milestone to conquer is the petroglyphs in Gobustan, these are ancient inscriptions on the rocks depicting the ancient civilization (similar to the Ellora caves in India with a multi-religious rock-cut cave complex). A thorough exploration of these artefacts will spark your interest full region during your Azerbaijan tour package.

Explore Lahij

The village Lahij/Lahich is a hill station located on the sloped of the great Caucasus and is a highly recommended place for anyone visiting Azerbaijan, as the beautiful village has been fabricated with cobblestone streets, offering a resemblance to the medieval Roman period. The village is famous for its craftsmanship for leatherwork, handcrafting carpets and creating unique pieces of copperware. A hike is perfect to explore the rich culture, with friendly and welcoming people. One of the major parts of Lahij represents the interpretation of Islam, folk rites, pre-Islamic faith, and Zoroastrianism.

Other Places to Visit in Azerbaijan

Further heading down the road is the upper and lower caravanserai, this happens to be a check post on the ancient Silk Road. An hour or two of stroll around the streets will lead to an old Albanian church in the village of Kish, just before lunch.
  • Lake Goygol – Situated in the lower Caucasus mountain range, it is one of the best places to visit in Azerbaijan. It is covered with dense forest from all directions and attracts many visitors who come to explore its beauty.

Why visit Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan is the land of the Fire – the home of fire worshippers since millennia. Historically, being a part of the Great Silk Road, Azerbaijan revels in the diversity of its heritage.

Azerbaijan is a country of exquisite natural beauty alongside monuments – both historical and modern. A country with modern values; it is considered to a place where Eastern cultures and traditions blend in with western progress. The most important of all is the easy hospitality of the Azeris, who are proud of their heritage; but have embraced modern culture and values.

An Oil rich country with a dominant Shia population, Azerbaijan shows the way for tolerance and openness in its culture – an attitude which a few ‘western’ countries could emulate. A deep love for literature and the arts since the early times of Nizami Ganjavi, is shown in the numerous theatres, museums and galleries. Notable amongst them are the Nizami musuem of literature, museum of miniature books, a Puppet theatre (a 100-year-old building earlier a movie theatre!) and the very interesting Carpet Museum.

Azerbaijan has an interesting history with its favourable location and climate attracting different cultures. The ancient era starts in the cave drawings of Gobustan. Then we have the Persians and the followers of Ahura Mazda – the fire worshippers – who were attracted by the ‘burning grounds and mountain’s’. After the Sassanid (Iranian) dynasty, Azerbaijan was ruled by Safavids dynasty, Nadir Shah (who had also defeated the Mughals in Delhi), the Qajars and the Sheki Khans dynasty to name a few.

Having an important position on the lucrative Silk Route, Azerbaijan has also interesting influences from other regions still visible today. The Indian priests (devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha) at Ateshgah – the Fire Temple; the Albanians at Qabala – including a small Udin community existing till date and the Jewish section at Quba – where Jews and Muslim have co-existed peacefully for ages!

The ancient cave drawings at Gobustan, the fire temple at Ateshgah, the Palace of Sheki Khans, the iconic Maidan Tower, the quaint fortress of Icheri Sheher and the Flaming towers at Baku, Mud ‘volcanoes’, the burning mountain (yes, it burns all the time), intricate artistic carpets, the scenic cities of Quba and Qabala, works of literature, arts and sculpture – all of this is just a small part of the country’s rich and priceless heritage.

Top places to visit in azerbaijan.

Baku –  The capital city by the Caspian is full of public parks, museums, boulevards and restaurants. The Flame Towers, the modern symbol of Azerbaijan competes with the historical icon – the Maiden Tower.

Sheki – famous for the beautiful palaces of the Shaki Khans with its colourful stained glasses and wall paintings (ensure you visit the less known Winter palace as well!). Other beautiful landmarks include the Caravanserai and the Udin Church (find out why there is a bust of a Norwegian there!).

Quba –  A city of pristine landscapes, mountain villages and the Caucasus range, it is known as the cultural capital. Ensure you take a drive through Qechresh forest – which is simply beautiful in Autumn. Nearby is the Ski resorts of Shahdag.

Qabala – the holiday destination especially in winter as a skiing destination. The nearby Nohur lake settled amongst mountains is captivating at sunset. However, don’t forget the original ancient fortress city of Qabala nearby – Chukur Qabala – the capital of Caucasian Albania (now an archaeological zone). Nearby also is the small Udin Christian Community – visit their charming church and the amazing museum!

Ateshgah : The Fire Temple – the ancient symbol of the Land of Fire. Carefully restored and nicely made informative sections – you will be surprised by the ‘Indian’ connection.

Gobustan: Examine stone- and bronze-age petroglyphs and a nearby ‘family’ of wonderfully weird mud volcanoes nearby.

Top things to do in Azerbaijan

  • Walk and explore the ancient fortress city of Icheri Shehar (Inner city) in Baku; visit the beautiful mosques, admire the architecture of the old buildings (especially the hanging balcony), Shirvanshah’s palace, settle down in a traditional restaurant, sample the Azeri cuisine watching the world go by….
  • Climb the Maiden tower and learn about the mysteries of this tower, the legend, which gives its name and the stories surrounding this iconic structure – especially the story of the fiery haired girl.
  • Spend time in the Fountains Square –  in the centre of Baku, lively and exuberant, full of restaurants, shops, museums and theatres..
  • Stroll the Baku Boulevard drinking in the pure Caspian area and watching the various entertainment options in the park. Do visit the ‘Puppet theatre’ and the impressive carpet museum.
  • Get amazed by the Burning mountain in Yanardag – the natural gas seeping in through the porous sandstone ground keeps the hillside burning continuously!
  • Pray in the beautiful mosque of Samakhi ; the 2 nd oldest mosque in the Caucasus.
  • Learn about our ancestors at the Gobustan museum of Petroglyphs – check out the ancient drawings nearby!
  • Visit the historic Red Village (Krasnaya Sloboda) – the only all-Jewish town in the world outside Israel and the United States.
  • Watch the copper craftsmen at work in Lahiq – an ancient human settlement in the Caucasus. The residents  – who are famous as craftsmen in different domains, speak Tati – an Iranian language.
  • Drive in a Lada – the Soviet era rugged car popular in rural Azerbaijan. Experience terror with the calm driver smiling on!
  • Eat the rich traditional ‘piti’ soup containing odious amounts of mutton fat; ensure you eat it the traditional way!
  • Visit the small but amazing Udin Community in Qabala; learn their way of life in the Udin museum, learn about the inspiring and poignant story of Ms Esmira Gangalyan, and pray at the atmospheric Udin church.

Our travellers say.

Dinesh Kumar Beyonder Traveller - Belgium & Netherlands

The travel plan was crafted just for me – I loved the biking experience at Damme in Belgium, photography of the windmills and old world charm at Zhaans in Netherlands and the hundreds of varieties of beer in Brussels. I had the safety of tour plan and tickets and hotels and all other bookings done by Beyonder, but I had opted to not have a guide with me.

Kittu Arumugam Beyonder Traveller - Belgium & Netherlands

Can’t forget the walking tour in Bruges by the Canals with all the amazing stories and legends narrated by our local guide, especially the night walking tour… and, of course, the refreshing beer at a 500 year old pub! With Beyonder the trip was indeed not the usual… Thanks guys…

The 8 Best Azerbaijan Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights.

A former Soviet republic on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan overflows with oil and gas. And it’s the first thing you are reminded of on arrival in Baku, the capital, where the hard-to-miss Flame Towers light up the cityscape and serve as a reference point to Baku’s other top attractions.

Despite its association with the former USSR, Baku flaunts its petrodollars in sleek and stylish high-rise buildings and gives off a hint of Parisian charm, thanks to its architecture modeled after the French capital.

Azerbaijan’s claim as the “land of fire” is no PR hype. Go on a trip to Yanar Dag to see for yourself a hillside burning natural fire, which according to local lore, has been going on for millennia (although some argue it may have only started igniting in the 1950s ). The place is sacred to locals who link the site’s mystery to the origins of Zoroastrianism, Persia’s monotheistic religion.

Located south of a present-day Russian republic, Azerbaijan is famous for its share of the Great Caucasus mountains, whose flanks make an excellent hiking destination if you want to skip the crowds. Take the hassle out of travel planning and logistics and work with a group tour operator to explore these trails that lead to wide-open mountain vistas, ruins hiding in mountain forests, and sacred sites and monuments that are some of the oldest in the region.

In places, Azerbaijan changed little over the millennia. Wander around these villages trapped in time. Some were once part of the trade route that linked East and West and are today easily accessible on guided expeditions.

Culturally important along the Silk Road are Sheki and Lahic; the former engaged in silkworm breeding and trading raw silk, the latter renowned for coppersmithing, now a UNESCO-protected art form. The latter is also notable as one of the oldest continuously inhabited places, with a sewage system dating back over a thousand years.

Hidden in its mountains, Azerbaijan boasts a treasure trove of rock art, numbering in the tens of thousands and spanning in history for 40,000 years. Nearby are ancient sites that date back to the Upper Paleolithic period, and the area forms today’s archaeological reserve.

These regions appear desolate, but with organized transport and a network of guides, they are often worked into day trips from the capital or multi-day excursions into the mountains and even across the Georgian border.

Azerbaijan remains an under-the-radar tourist destination, and now is the best time to explore its countryside, where time seems to stand still. Choose from one of the tours below and add more destinations.

Flame towers among the clouds, Baku, Azerbaijan at sunset amongst orange clouds

Think Azerbaijan only holds appeal for travelers looking to tick off every country on the map? Think again.

Imagine an enigmatic country squeezed in between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, scattered with small fishing towns and remote mountain villages far from the tourist trail. Envisage the capital Baku and picture Europe meeting  Asia with a Gulf States flair – a brash cosmopolitan metropolis flaunting the latest in futuristic architecture sitting alongside ancient mosques, walled cities and old-world Russian opulence. Think how bemused your friends will be upon hearing of your latest holiday choice. Fascinating, austere and intriguing by turns, this back-of-beyond nation won’t fail to charm and perplex.

Best time to visit azerbaijan.

April through to June is the best time to visit Azerbaijan, when the temperatures are warm, the flowers are out, and skies at their clearest. September and October are also good temperature-wise, though the countryside isn’t as scenic. The heat and humidity can be oppressive in Baku during the summer months of June, July and August, and from November to March temperatures can fall below 32 F.

Geography and environment

Azerbaijan is a mountainous country on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Over half of the country’s landscape consists of ridges, crests and foothills, while the remainder is characterized by lowland plateaus and plains traversed by rivers.

Top 5 iconic sights in Azerbaijan

1. the walled city of old baku.

Constructed sometime in the 12th century, this walled fortress was granted UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2000. A bustling labyrinth of alleyways, old buildings and boutique hotels, where the locals still live and go about their day, it retains the quintessential elements of a medieval town. It’s one of the few World Heritage sights in which you can actually bed down for a night.

2. Shirvanshah’s Palace

This ornate sandstone palatial complex received World Heritage status at the same time as the Walled City (in which it’s located). Largely destroyed by a bombardment, courtesy of the Russian Navy in the 18th century, the Palace has since been meticulously restored and is clearly visible from the sea and the city’s surrounding heights.

3. Maiden's Tower

Another World Heritage-listed sight inside the Walled City, Qiz Qalasi – translated as the Maiden’s or Virgin’s Tower – is one of Azerbaijan’s foremost architectural accomplishments and recognizable emblems. Standing 29 metres high and cylindrical in design, the history of this spiralling and mystifying structure remains a point of debate between historians, while its top offers 360-degree views of surrounding Baku Bay and the town’s alleys and minarets.

4. Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape

The ancient carvings and petroglyphs of the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, less than 70 km from Baku, provide a rich and fascinating insight into how life was for people in the area over 40,000 years ago. More than 6,000 depictions of flora, fauna and people engaged in hunting and fishing activities reveal both cultural continuity between prehistoric and medieval times, and seismic geographical change. The site received UNESCO listing in 2007.

5. The Khan’s Palace

Currently on the tentative list of sights seeking World Heritage listing, the former summer residential palace of Shaki Khans is an ornately tiled and patterned two-story structure built in 1797. Renowned for its exquisite stained-glass windows, murals and frescos, the palace’s beauty is only enhanced by verdant natural surroundings.

Is tipping customary in Azerbaijan?

In established restaurants, bars, hotels and taxis, a 5-10% service charge is usually added to the bill - though feel free to tip more than this for exceptional service. At restaurants where a service charge isn’t included, 10% is the acceptable gratuity. Although tipping at other places isn't mandatory it will be well received, and setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is also a good idea.

What is the internet access like in Azerbaijan?

Internet cafes with reliable and fast connections can easily be found in all of Azerbaijan’s major cities and towns.

Can I use my cell phone while in Azerbaijan?

Cell phone coverage is extensive throughout the capital and major cities, but pretty much non-existent in the remote mountainous parts of the country. Roaming agreements are in place with most international cellular companies.

What are the toilets like in Azerbaijan?

Clean and flushable Western-style toilets are generally the go at established tourist attractions across the country, though one should be prepared for some pretty ordinary squat/pit toilets elsewhere. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as these aren’t always at hand.

What will it cost for a...?

1.5 litre bottle of water = .60 AZN Bottle of local beer = 2.5 AZN Meal at an inexpensive restaurant = 8 AZN Meal at a mid-range restaurant = 40 AZN

Can I drink the water in Azerbaijan?

Tap water isn't safe to drink in Azerbaijan. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring water purification tablets or ask your leader where filtered water can be found.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Azerbaijan?

Some major credit cards will be accepted at some high-end restaurants and hotels, but it's best not to rely on these.

What is ATM access like in Azerbaijan?

ATMs are prevalent in Baku and other major towns, though won’t necessarily be internationally connected or reliable. Be sure to have other payment methods when visiting the country.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

India v England: Harry Brook to return home from tour for personal reasons

21 January 2024 21 January 2024 . From the section Cricket

Harry Brook

Yorkshire batter Harry Brook is to fly home from England's tour of India for personal reasons.

Brook, 24, was expected to be in England's XI for the opening Test in Hyderabad on Thursday but has left the squad with immediate effect.

Surrey's Dan Lawrence has been named as his replacement but Brook could return later in the five-match series.

"The Brook family respectfully requests privacy during this time," the England and Wales Cricket Board said.

Due to the length of the tour, England, who are currently travelling from Abu Dhabi to Hyderabad, will leave India between the second Test (Vizag, 2-6 February) and the third (Rajkot, 15-19 February).

The fourth Test will take place in Ranchi from 23-27 February with the final Test of the series in Dharamsala from 7 March.

Brook was one of only three players in the Test squad who also featured for England in the ODI and T20 series in the West Indies, along with Rehan Ahmed and Gus Atkinson.

He has made four centuries in his 12 Test matches for England, including three in the historic series victory in Pakistan in 2022.

Lawrence, who is expected to arrive in India on Monday or Tuesday, will provide direct cover for Brook in England's middle order.

He played the last of his 11 Tests in 2022, with his highest score of 91 coming against the West Indies in Bridgetown in March 2022.

The 26-year-old has not featured during the Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum era, but was in the squad during the Ashes as batting cover.

Short presentational grey line

Updated England squad for India tour: Ben Stokes (capt), Rehan Ahmed, James Anderson, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Shoaib Bashir, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes, Tom Hartley, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Mark Wood.

By chief cricket writer Stephan Shemilt

Firstly, this is a huge blow for Harry Brook. For any player to leave a tour in such circumstances suggests a serious situation for him and his family.

Despite initially saying Brook will miss the entire series, England have now clarified he could return. The tour lasts until March and England will leave India for Dubai between the second and third Tests.

For England, it is clearly disruptive to their preparations, especially given the form Brook has been in since he first broke into the side.

But, perversely, it could also help to make the balance of the side clearer, just as the injury to Ollie Pope led to Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes balancing England's XI during the Ashes.

Now, if they want six batters, a keeper and four bowlers, there is room for both Pope and Ben Foakes to return.

If they only want five specialist batters in order to play the extra bowler then a ticklish decision, possibly leading to vice-captain Pope being left out, can be avoided.

Brook's absence gives an opportunity to Lawrence, who would otherwise have been at the ILT20 in the UAE.

He has flickered in a short Test career, having never really had a long run in the side.

Tours of India are unpredictable, so there's every chance Lawrence will get an opportunity at some point. His spin bowling may come in handy, too. It is improving, as shown by the wickets he took for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash.

England vs India, Test series and tour: Full schedule and fixtures

England are already on the back foot after day one of the first Test in Hyderabad

Yashasvi Jaiswal punishes England's bowling

Tom Hartley had a Test debut to forget as England’s Bazballers got Bazballed on day one of their series opener in Hyderabad.

Hartley’s first ball was hit for six by Yashasvi Jaiswal and he want on to concede 63 runs off nine overs at an economy rate of seven.

England won the toss and elected to bat first and despite making a quick-fire start, wickets soon tumbled and it was only thanks to a captain’s knock by Ben Stokes (70) that the tourists made it to 246 all out.

Unfortunately, India’s batsmen quickly proved that it was a sub-par total as Jaiswal took the attack to England’s bowlers, in particular rookie left-arm spinner Hartley, as they finished day one on 119-1, just 127 runs behind.

What is the full fixture list and schedule?

All times UK

1st Test: January 25–29, Hyderabad 2nd Test: February 2–6,  Visakhapatnam (4am start) 3rd Test: February 15–19, Rajkot (4am start) 4th Test: February 23-27, Ranchi (4am start) 5th Test: March 7–11, Dharamsala (4am start)

What TV channel is India vs England on?

In the UK, TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) will show the series after reaching an agreement just nine days before the first ball is bowled. The matches are also available to view on discovery+. Commentary will be taken from the world feed, which is likely to feature Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan.

The live radio coverage will be on Talksport, not BBC Test Match Special. Although the BBC bid for the rights, they were beaten by the commercial broadcaster.

Who is in the England squad?

Shoaib Bashir celebrating a wicket with Somerset - England vs India, Test series and tour: Full schedule and fixtures

England surprised supporters by announcing Shoaib Bashir , a 20-year-old Somerset off-spinner, as one of three uncapped players in their squad.

Bashir, who has played just six games of first-class cricket for Somerset, has been picked on potential , probably based on his high action and impressive performances on an England Lions training camp in the UAE.

However, Bashir was ruled out of the first Test after being unable to fly to India in time because of a visa delay .

In a 16-player touring party, the other two men uncapped at Test level are Lancashire left-arm spinner Hartley and Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson. Hartley and Atkinson have both played white-ball cricket for the national team.

Rehan Ahmed, the leg-spinner, is also in the team and there is a fourth spin option in Jack Leach, who is returning from a stress fracture in his back. Liam Dawson and Will Jacks, two other spinners with international experience, have been left out.

There are four seam-bowling options: James Anderson, Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood and Atkinson.

Harry Brook has been ruled out of the early part of the tour while attending to an undisclosed personal matter back in England.
