Celebrating 25 Years of Unparalleled Experience

See what our travellers have to say, where to travel when, our top picks for january (1 of 6), kalahari desert - botswana.

Excellent birding, game viewing and the zebra migration in the now-green Kalahari Desert.

January falls within Botswana’s intense rainy season, making animals hard to find in the northern parts of the country like Chobe National Park. The Kalahari is in the south, however, and being a desert, doesn’t receive the same level of rain. But what rain it does receive transforms it from red sand to green grazing, attracting predators, prey and plenty of migrant and resident birds.

Zebra migration through Nxai and Makgadikgadi Pans.

When to book

The Kalahari is not nearly as visited as Botswana’s superstar wilderness areas, the Okavango Delta and Chobe. You should be able to get good accommodation and rates without booking too far in advance.

Good to know

Read our seasonal guide to planning your Botswana safari and our expert advice for amateur photographers on how to photograph birds on your safari.

Our Top Picks for January (2 of 6)

Quirimbas archipelago - mozambique.

Diving in the Quirimbas Archipelago.

Near-perfect conditions with excellent visibility. The very brief rain showers cool down the heat of the long, sunny days.

Mozambique is one of Africa’s undiscovered gems but January is popular because it coincides with regional school holidays.

How to combine Mozambique with the Kruger National Park .

Our Top Picks for January (3 of 6)

Zanzibar - tanzania.

Diving off Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is an island off the Indian Coast of Tanzania and averages only five rainy days for the month of January. The south of the main island offers the best diving conditions while the north has the best sunset views. For exceptional reef diving and snorkeling, head to the exclusive outlying islands of Pemba, Mafia and Mnemba. Zanzibar is also home to Stone Town, a World Heritage Site with plenty to see and do. A beach holiday on Zanzibar is the perfect way to relax after the early morning wake-up calls of a Southern Serengeti safari.

Because the island has almost perfect weather, it is very popular so secure the best accommodation as soon as you can. Sought-after places like Pemba and Mafia have a very amount of accommodation available – there are no large resorts here.

Our best dive lodges .

Our Top Picks for January (4 of 6)

Southern serengeti - tanzania.

Calving season during the Great Wildebeest Migration.

The herds mass in the Southern Serengeti at this time of year to take advantage of the excellent grazing – depending on whether good rains fell in time – that will sustain their calves. About 8 000 calves are born every day and there is plenty of predator action from lions, hyenas, leopards, wild dogs and jackals. Game drives will take you to the heart of the action.

This is considered the low or Green Season in Serengeti National Park and is much less-visited than the mid-year high season. You generally don’t need to book too far in advance to get accommodation. Bear in mind that the time around New Year will be busier as local Tanzanian families go on holiday.

Read our expert blogs on how the Great Migration works and find out about the Top 5 things you may not realise about the Migration .

Watch our animated video of how the Migration works .

Our Top Picks for January (5 of 6)

Bwindi impenetrable national park - uganda.

Trekking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

January generally coincides with a short dry spell, making it easier and more comfortable to trek because there is less rain and mud.

All gorilla-trekking destinations issue a limited number of permits per day and there is limited accommodation available in remote parks like Bwindi. Book as soon as you decide to go trekking to avoid disappointment – peak dry season is very popular.

Read our expert blog on the basics of gorilla trekking .

Watch our video series on gorilla trekking , from shopping for the trip and vaccinations to the moment you spot the gorillas for the first time.

Our Top Picks for January (6 of 6)

Cape town & garden route.

Self-drive road trip or private guided tour of Cape Town, the surrounding Cape Winelands and the Garden Route that runs from Cape Town and takes you to Addo Elephant National Park.

Unlike the safari areas in the northern parts of South Africa – the Kruger National Park, Madikwe Private Game Reserve and Phinda Private Game Reserve - that are rainy in January, Cape Town and the Garden Route are dry.

For the first half of January and especially over New Year, as far in advance as possible. This time coincides with the South African school holidays so many local families take their annual vacation now. The local schools reopen in mid-January meaning the second-half of the month is slightly less busy.

Read our expert blogs on Cape Town’s best beaches , best sundowner spots , best beach hotels and villas , and on the Constantia Winelands .

African Safari Specialists: 16 Experts We Trust

By Paul Brady

Zebra Grazing at Savannah at Masai Mara

Even the most hardcore travelers we know—the sort of people who plan their own hikes through Patagonia , ride motor scooters up and down Vietnam, and bareboat charter in the BVIs—get a little skittish when it comes to that most bucket-y of bucket trips, the ultimate African safari . And who can blame them? It’s tough to find legit info, the geography’s confusing, there’s a bunch of indecipherable lingo, and the price tag— oh, the price tag . When you’re spending more than $1,000 a day for what’s supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, even the most intrepid travelers are gonna get skittish.

Which is why we always advise travelers to book their next African adventure with the help of a travel specialist , somebody who’s actually stayed in the tented camps, walked through the bush with the guides, and been on those puddle-jumpers you’re planning to take. These experts know what’s up, because they’ve already been where you wanna go—and the other places you hadn’t even considered that may even be a little bit better. So whether you want to see the big five, track the Great Migration, paddle through the Okavango, or cruise the Skeleton Coast, these are the go-to experts that can help you pull it off.

Dan Achber, Trufflepig Achber knows Botswana particularly well—he’s organized multiday paddles on the Selinda Spillway and game counts with zebra researchers working in the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Cherri Briggs, Explore, Inc. Briggs has spent more than two decades planning trips to Africa , and her latest focus is lesser-known but awe-inspiring places like Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Zambia.

Deborah Calmeyer, Roar Africa With her far-reaching network that includes some of the region’s savviest guides, she can get you into private homes, gardens, and art collections you can’t otherwise see.

Linda Friedman, Custom Safaris She’s planned lots of multigenerational family safaris, and she’s also expert at gorilla tracking in Rwanda .

Julian Harrison, Premier Tours He’s arranged trips with wildlife film-makers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, as well as with lion and rhino researchers.

Ryan Hilton, AuthentEscapes He’s planned photography workshops in the bush, connected travelers with anti-poaching teams, and coordinated a ten-day, 62-mile walking safari through raw wilderness.

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Truck and Offroad

Will Jones, Journeys by Design A native of Africa, Jones has been working in safaris since 1994, managing camps, guiding trips, and planning way-out-there expeditions into tribal villages and stretches of untouched wilderness.

Michael Lorentz, Passage to Africa Lorentz shines at back-of-beyond trips to Ethiopia and mobile safaris in Botswana, where you’ll spot meerkat, hyena, and other wildlife.

Henrietta Loyd, Cazenove + Loyd She’ll arrange safaris through tribal regions of Kenya, art tours in Cape Town , and meetings with politicos in Ethiopia.

Mark Nolting, The Africa Adventure Company For off-the-map safaris led by researchers in places like the rarely visited Mabuasehube Game Reserve, Nolting is our guy.

Wil Smith and Karen Zulauf, Deeper Africa They take walking safaris seriously, pairing you up with leading researchers, game wardens, anti-poaching teams, and guides for itineraries in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Teresa Sullivan, Mango African Safaris Sullivan knows which routes, camps, and game reserves are best suited to families, and she’s coordinated multiday walks in the Kenyan bush.

Phoebe Weinberg, Greatways Travel Weinberg can get you the best rooms (like No. 6 at Singita Lebombo Lodge or No. 1 at Vumbura Plains), plus over-the-top extras like helicopter flights above the Okavango Delta.

Nina Wennersten and Daniel Saperstein, Hippo Creek Safaris This duo pulls off spectacular trips in Kenya (to the Segera Retreat, for example), South Africa (where they’ll arrange private wine tastings), and Tanzania (where they recommend Roving Bushtops).

Positive impact and giving back

We’re acutely aware that the places that Expert Africa features are some of the most pristine and delicate wilderness areas in the world. They are also home to some of the world’s most iconic species. We’re conscious, too, that we have a responsibility not only to help protect these places but also to promote the benefits they provide to the people who live in them, and who dedicate themselves to protecting them. This is a shared responsibility involving our travellers, the camps and lodges on the ground and ourselves at Expert Africa. We don't simply pay lip service to this responsibility; we actively take the lead on it. This is a genuine commitment and not the often-observed tokenism prevalent in much of our industry. Promoting actions that look good but usually have little meaningful impact is not what we are about. Expert Africa is different.

  African Safari Experts

African safari experts grew from a dream, a passion for animals and a deep love of africa. pierre has spent more than 25 years travelling africa and after many overland tours from nairobi to cape town, spending many thousands of hours as a walking guide and managing some of the most famous and luxurious lodges in africa, the desire to share these experiences with people was born., “if you want something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done”.

We Don’t Just Love Africa, We Live Here

One of life’s most unforgettable adventures, an African safari is unlike any other since no two game drives are ever the same.

The diverse scenery, wildlife, and friendly locals of Africa, from the Serengeti’s vast plains to the Okavango Delta’s hidden canals, are what keep visitors coming back. Almost half of our customers are repeats or referrals.

Since 2018, we have made it a priority to visit each of the 1,000+ carefully selected safari partners we recommend to our clients. We spare no effort in researching and exploring every aspect of the places we suggest for you to visit, so that we can give you honest recommendations based on our own knowledge.

We take great satisfaction in being genuine specialists; between us, we spend well over a year’s worth of time on safari every year, so you can rest assured you’ll always have the experience of a lifetime. For the third year in a row, Condé Nast Traveler honored our team of specialists as Top Travel Specialists in their March 2023 issue. We are the only organization to have so many professionals recognized, as 11 of our own were ranked among Africa’s best.

Our whole staff of safari professionals, from Kampala – Arusha – Nairobi – Cape Town, was raised in Africa. We’ve spent our whole lives on game reserves, either as guides or employees, or as lodge owners and managers, so we know what it takes to make a safari in Africa truly unforgettable. we are The Bespoke African Safari Co.

If you book with us, we’ll be there for you from the very first conversation on, providing timely, expert advice and local insight from the correct time zone around the clock. We will assist you in planning the safari of your dreams, whether it be seeing the Big Five , following the Wildebeest Migration , spending time with endangered gorillas , or simply enjoying sundowner beverages on an endless grassland.

We are an African enterprise, so you can be assured that every cent you spend on your safari will remain on the continent. You are making an impact long after you leave by contributing to local economies and conservation efforts, ensuring that these unique sites will be preserved for future generations.
