Singer and songwriter Abra earned acclaim for her shadowy, lo-fi R&B songs before going on to work with several major pop, rap, and dance artists. Nicknamed the "darkwave duchess," she became an underground sensation with the release of her bedroom-recorded 2015 full-length Rose, and earned further accolades for 2016's Princess EP. She guested on tracks by Charli XCX, Gorillaz, Solange, Bad Bunny, and several others, then reunited with past collaborator Playboi Carti on the 2021 single "Unlock It" in advance of her first major-label album.

Remembering Toby Keith: Our 2012 interview with the country music star before West Palm concert

Editor's note: Country music star Toby Keith died Feb. 5, 2024, following a battle with stomach cancer, at the age of 62. Here is our 2012 interview with Keith before his performance in West Palm Beach.

Before Brad Paisley said no, before Keith Urban was asked, Toby Keith turned down American Idol . They offered the 51-year-old Oklahoma native “a beaucoup-lot of money, a really big number,” Keith said by phone from Georgia.

“Ten years ago, I would have probably jumped on it but I’ve been around enough to know that I don’t have the energy to focus on something like that and I would want to do a great job. I’ve never seen the show, but I’ve done a couple of movies and it’s just really time-consuming.”

Not only would it take time from his touring schedule and his songwriting time, most importantly, it would take time away from his family.

The father of three married Tricia Lucus in 1984. She was a single mom and he adopted her daughter Shelley right after they married. He’s also the father of Krystal, a blossoming singer/songwriter, and Stelen, who Keith calls Steelman, who is in 10th grade.

Krystal recently spoke about her father to a California radio station saying, “My dad made sure that we didn’t notice when he was gone. He would always make time for us and was always there when we needed him.”

His marriage works, he says, because of his schedule. He teases his wife, saying, “If I retired, we might not get along. When I’m home all the time you might not be able to stand me.”

Getting serious, he says, “You just have to have the right people in the right situation. If you’ve been together for a long time and then you go on the road, I think that makes it harder. When we met, I was already busting my hump, working in the oil fields, so I was gone three or four days a week anyway. Then I switched to music and I was gone four or five nights at a time. There are a lot of sacrifices and I’m sure she felt them. If you can stay together through that, when the good times come, it’s so rewarding.”

These days, Keith’s touring schedule has been pared back. “Now I only do about 65 shows a year, and even during my heaviest three or four months of touring, I’m home Monday through Thursday afternoon at about 2 o’clock. Steelman gets up to go to school, I’ll see him off and that afternoon I pop over to the airport, fly to my show that night. I ride my bus a couple of nights, do my three shows, and as soon as the last show’s over I race to the closest airport and jump back on the plane and head back to my house. I wake up Sunday morning back at home.”

When Keith’s at home, one of his greatest joys is coaching his son’s football team. Keith, who played semi-pro football for the Oklahoma City Drillers in the early ‘80s, was invited to be an assistant coach at his son’s school, a role he relishes.

“It’s neat to be able to keep going with him. Even during my work season, I’ll be at practice Monday through Wednesday. I only have about 8 shows left and then I’ll be completely off the road. I usually work until October but I’ve pushed everything forward so I can experience his high school football years. That is such a big chunk of my world.”

Part of the reason Keith likes to stay close to home is that he knows that the life you see around you shapes the life you chase. He has always credited the time he spent with his maternal grandmother with fueling his passion for music. It was in her tavern that Keith, age 12, was introduced to the honkytonk way of life. He wrote about it in Honkytonk U and again in Clancy’s Tavern , his 2011 album.

Hilda Marie ‘Clancy’ Martin of tiny Booneville, Ark., was Keith’s hero.

“She was just a really strong independent woman. Her husband died when her youngest child was a newborn, so they had a baby, a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old and they lived way out in the sticks in Arkansas. So she’s young, and she’s strapped with three kids. She’d leave them there in that shack with her parents and drive to Fort Smith to work at the Dixie Cup factory. She worked there for years and became the first female (shift) manager in this gigantic factory. That was in the early ‘50s and she bought a brand new house right across the tracks from the factory. We still have that house.”

Years later, Keith says, “She started taking the cover charge at a supper club and when the lady who owned it retired, my grandma left Dixie Cup and bought it and she ran that nightclub for years, until she retired. She took a few years off, but she couldn’t take sitting at home, so she went down to Walmart. She was just so capable that even at 60-something they recognized what a great person she was. She didn’t need the money. Her house was paid off. She’d worked her whole life.

“She was very important in my life. Here was a woman, a widow, who could just fill in the New York Times crossword puzzle while she had her coffee.”

There’s no doubt his grandmother would be proud of Keith’s latest achievement. In 2012, Keith’s foundation finally broke ground on the OK Kids Korral. The Korral will provide families of pediatric cancer patients a free place to stay while the children receive treatment at The Children’s Hospital at the Oklahoma University Medical Center.

“It’s been almost a decade since we started,” said Keith, who hosts an annual golf tournament and concert to raise money for the project. This year it raised $664,000.

“When we started out, we were going to push all this money toward the Korral, and we started Ally’s House to facilitate immediate needs of kids with cancer. But there was a great need there, and we never turned anyone away. If you had a kid with cancer and you needed help, we were there. So we had to build Ally’s house so it could stand alone, and have its own donations coming in. Finally, one year they said, we don’t need your money. So we started applying that money to the OK Kids Korral. We just started pouring concrete and it’s a wonderful thing. It’s going to be a first-rate facility and we’re really excited about it.”

One of the top earning performers in any genre, Keith took home an estimated $55 million in 2011 according to Forbes , between his annual tour, record sales and record label, his Wild Shot mescal and his popular I Love his Bar and Grill restaurants (he just opened the 12th).

“I’m real happy with where I am right now and I feel like you have to help as many people as you can.”

The Decemberists release new music and Oregon tour dates

The Decemberists

Portland band The Decemberists are going on tour this summer, with two stops in Oregon. Holly Andres

  • Lizzy Acker | The Oregonian/OregonLive

One of the most-Portland bands of all time isn’t done yet.

The Decemberists, known for writing about such Portland-y topics as the bus mall and being near water , are back with their first new music in six years , and a tour to go with it.

And, as if this news could get any more Portland-in-the-aughts, James Mercer of the Shins is featured on the new track, “Burial Ground.”

You gotta hear this one song. It’ll change your life, I swear.

The tour will traverse the country but it has two Oregon stops: Friday, July 12 at Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend and a final U.S. show at McMenamins Edgefield in Troutdale on Saturday, Aug. 3 . Tickets to both shows go on sale Friday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. via LiveNation.

Tickets will also be available through Vivid Seats , StubHub , SeatGeek and Ticket Squeeze .

In second place, with a $1,000 prize, was Kathiana Dargenson, who presented Harmonizing Haiti that celebrates the similarities and contrasts between Haitian culture and opera/classical music. Congratulations to the winners, as well as the seven finalists who all presented their ideas.

Our thanks to the judging panel: Dr. K (Donald Kuratko), Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Kelley School of Business and Executive & Academic Director of the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation; Krishnan Thiagarajan , Jacobs alumnus and Chief Executive & President of Seattle Symphony and Benaroya Hall; Travis Brown , Senior Executive Assistant Dean of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Commercialization at the Luddy School, Suzanne Allen , Director of IU Corps; and Daixuan Ai , JSoM composition student.  We also thank JSoM David Henry Jacobs Bicentennial Dean Abra Bush for her strong support and student Kearsen Erwin for assisting with management of the project!

"It's like a combination of feeling like you're in a dream and feeling like you're finally living your dream," Noah Kahan says of his arena-sized fame.

The Beatles taught us about Liverpool, England and Abbey Road. Prince had Minneapolis. Bruce Springsteen rooted us in New Jersey. For singer-songwriter Noah Kahan , it's all about Vermont and New England.

His 2022 gold-certified album Stick Season has hooks and chord progressions reminiscent of the pop-folk songs of artists like Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers , with lyrics like, "I was raised on a little light." With a virality fueled by TikTok and his Gen Z fan base — who call themselves "Busyheads" in reference to his first studio album — Kahan has shot to arena-sized fame, performing on Saturday Night Live , selling out most of his 2024 tour and landing a best new artist Grammy nomination this year.

"It's like a combination of feeling like you're in a dream and feeling like you're finally living your dream," he says.

His latest release is an iteration of Stick Season that reimagines the songs with collaborators he's met along the way: Brandi Carlile , Gregory Alan Isakov and Post Malone are among them. "It's one final — I promise final — kind of goodbye to the Stick Season era, which I have just loved living in and never want to leave."

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Interview highlights

On Stick Season and transitions

"Stick season" is a term that I heard older neighbors in Vermont and New Hampshire use to describe the time of year between late October and the first snow. So all the leaves have gone, foliage is over in Vermont, which is obviously a beautiful time, and it's kind of this transitional time. It's a little bit depressing. It's usually gray outside. You can't go play soccer, you can't do too much hiking and you also can't go skiing. It was a term that was really specific to Vermont, but also I was reflecting on it in my own life and what it meant to me to be in this time of transition. I spent a lot of stick seasons in Vermont in my early 20s, and I was always feeling kind of in-between things in my life — between love and losing love and moving on to the next thing. That spot where you're figuring out who you are and how to reconcile what's just ended with what's to come.

On placeless pop music and the importance of details in songwriting

Writing pop songs, you go in and you have a concept and you want it to be this hugely relatable concept. It has to be relatable very quickly, and it has to be applicable to anyone's lives. I had a lot of fun doing that, but I eventually started to feel like I was no longer connecting to anything. I was just trying to be as universal as possible. And in doing so, I lost the specificity of my feelings and my life and my interpretation of where I was in life. I think to tell a story, you have to be specific and you have to be detailed.

How being home in Vermont during the pandemic shaped his music

I think deep down, I was trying to get back to Vermont and [the pandemic] kind of gave me a way to get home and to be back with my family and just gave me a break from the life I was living in New York.

I was really burnt out and exhausted, and I didn't know what I wanted out of my life, and I didn't know what I wanted out of my music and my musical career. So I went home, which was beautiful at first, but then you remember: You are home and you're interacting with your parents. My dad and I are arguing about what chores I'm going to do and I'm not paying rent. I felt like I was transported back into my high school years, my childhood. I was looking for the same kind care from my parents that I would have gotten as a kid, but they're like, "You're in your 20s! Figure it out. We're not going to stop our lives for you."

I was reconciling with this feeling of being so far away from my childhood, but in the place that I spent it in. It really felt like this hybrid version of my youth, which I think unlocked a little bit of that youthful, carefree songwriting that I had before I kind of stepped into it as a profession. Every day I found like three or four hours where I felt like I could just escape back into my youth. And it was magical, like, so magical. I felt so free. It was so cool. I wore my old high school soccer practice jersey around the house, and it was just like, I'm back, like the most washed up dude ever. It was awesome.

On working through his parents' divorce

With my parents splitting up, I felt like I was a kid still, so I was so hurt by it. And then I would revert back into my mature 22-year-old brain, and think, they are people too. It was just kind of letting go of this idea of a perfect family or a perfect life and having to adjust to that. It was complicated and hard to see, but there was also something intimate and beautiful about being able to see my parents growing and making decisions like that, that I might have to make in the future. It felt like we were just adults being adults.

I also learned a lot about my parents, and I was proud of them for how they handled it and how they seemed to come out on the other side, happier, still fully functioning adults. That's what the song " Northern Attitude " is about: What's next? Where do you go? I think people think about breakups and everyone sets those [songs] in their early 20s or late 30s or whatever. And, you know, these things happen at every age. And, when you've lived so much life, it can be hard to start over. I got to watch my parents do that and it was a really inspiring and a beautiful thing to see.

On selling out huge arenas like Madison Square Garden

It's like a combination of feeling like you're in a dream and feeling like you're finally living your dream. It's this beautiful moment and you also wonder if they're there for the wrong person. You're like, am I opening up or am I supposed to be here right now? And you see all these people here for you and you know, they can't all be from Vermont. They can't all be from New Hampshire. They're from all over the world and all over the country and it's an unbelievable feeling.

Finding an audience on TikTok

TikTok really was a major marketing tool and just an amazing thing for me. I was very hesitant to get on it in the first place. It was weird back then, to be fair. It was like people dancing around and like filters and stuff. But every once in a while I'd see an amazing song. And I was like, oh, that's awesome and that's a cool way to workshop songs. They were never full songs, it was always like someone's chorus or like a verse and that was perfect for me because I write kind of sporadic little chunks a lot. I usually write a first verse and chorus, and then I step away for a few months and come back to it. So I had all these verses and choruses, and I put them on TikTok and crowdsourced the album in a lot of ways. I would see a positive response [and think] okay, I'm doing something good and I can keep going with it. That would help me finish them. A lot of the success of this album is definitely born on TikTok.

On TikTok pulling Universal Music Group's music from the app, because of a contract dispute

I certainly hope that my music can live on TikTok eventually. I'm incredibly grateful to have spent the time building a fan base and that will hopefully, you know, transcend TikTok. I hope that developing artists know that it's going to be okay and that we're going to find a way for people to find the music and that great music wins, regardless of the platform.

On his new signature hairstyle: braided pigtails

I've had long hair for so long and it's just so unpredictable. At one moment I could look like Keanu Reeves, and the next moment I look like a f****** scarecrow. So I just needed something that stays in place. I was doing the bun for a while ... and then I started doing the Willie Nelson braid, and then I started kind of going for the Post Malone French braids and I've been really enjoying that. I don't think anyone's looking at me as a sex symbol or like, look how hot he is, so I'm just gonna look as crazy and unique as possible. I actually had my guitar player's little sister doing them for a while and now my neighbor from Stratford, Vermont, has been on tour with me, and she's been doing braids for me. It's been awesome; it's like camp counselors' stuff!

On bringing his mom to the Grammys

My mom, literally my entire childhood, was like, "When you go to the Grammys, you got to take me." She made me promise. I would not even let her talk about it until the day I found out I got nominated, and then I called her and I'm like, "We're going to the Grammys!" She deserves it. She drove me all around New England trying to get me places to play music and so the least I could do to repay her is to bring her to the biggest night of my life, at the Grammys.

The band announced the tour, produced by Live Nation, will start on Aug. 23 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and will travel to 10 cities.

"Morning View," Incubus' double Platinum album, was originally released in 2001 and rereleased in October last year. The show will also feature hits with special guests Coheed and Cambria.

“Roughly 23 years ago, we rented a house at the sea to do an art experiment," said Brandon Boyd, the band's lead vocalist, in a statement. "The novel and expansive environment combined with a healthy dose of momentum helped us find that ever sought after FLOW state and the songs that became known as 'Morning View' have since become indelible and deeply important parts of our lives."

Usher announces Past Present Future tour ahead of Super Bowl, 'Coming Home' album

abra music tour

Usher has a confession — " Yeah! ," he's coming to your city.

The multi-Grammy-winning singer announced the Usher: Past Present Future Tour to promote his upcoming album "Coming Home," which drops Friday, just days before his headlining Super Bowl 58  halftime show, presented by Apple Music, at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Now, more fans around the country have the chance to see him in person for a 24-city arena tour starting in Washington, D.C. in August and ending in Chicago in October.

He previously described  the upcoming album as a "love letter … to the legacy of my career."

Usher, 45, ended his sold-out Las Vegas residency in December after 100 shows, but many people have called on the "King of R&B" to take his talent on the road.

"Vegas has offered an opportunity to celebrate the past and celebrate the records, the No. 1s, the connection to the audience, the entertainment," Usher told USA TODAY for The Essentials series in November. "And then the Super Bowl moment offers not only that, but then a segue into the next chapter," teasing "Coming Home."

The singer/songwriter's chart-topping 2004 album "Confessions" has sold over 15 million copies worldwide and is the  best-selling R&B album of the 21st century  by a male artist.

"Confessions" celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, so it's possible he'll incorporate some throwback songs on this tour.

It's been a decade since Usher's last tour, aptly titled The UR Experience, which ran from 2014 to 2015.

How to get Usher tour tickets

Presale tickets for Citi card members and Verizon users will be available starting on Feb. 7. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead.

Citi and Verizon presale tickets can be purchased from Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. local time until Feb. 11 at 10 p.m. local time through the Citi Entertainment program and Verizon Up , respectively.

General sale begins on Monday at 10 a.m. local time at LiveNation.com .
