English Harbour ~ Antigua 🇦🇬 🐬 ⚓️ 😎
The harbour became a primary position as a naval base once the islands of Antigua & Barbuda became colonies of the British crown in 1632. The construction of a modern naval dockyard began in the 1740s and included storehouses, officers’ quarters, commander-in-chief’s quarter, kitchens, shelters etc. as well s as stone wall to enclose the dockyard. Today the naval dockyard is protected as a national park and is listed by UNESCO World Heritage Sites for ‘Outstanding Universal value’ and made to use by customs office, shops, hotels, restaurants etc.
The English Harbour area as a whole also include Falmouth Harbour and has through the years become one of the most important luxury yacht charter destinations of the Caribbean as well as world-wide.

7 Day Antigua Charter Itinerary - English Harbour to English Harbour
Ideal for Winter Season
Renowned as one of the finest cruising destinations in the Caribbean, Antigua offers visitors a world of possibilities to explore during the winter charter season. Indeed, from quaint harbours to colourful coral reefs, the island serves as a serene paradise for those exploring on board a motor yacht or sailing yacht.
English Harbour
Getting a private yacht charter vacation in Antigua underway in style, guests will arrive at the iconic English Harbour located at the south of the island. Flanked by fortresses on either side, this natural harbour enjoys the status of a National Park, and there’s plenty to see and do here before stepping on board a yacht.
The fine selection of boutique shops and restaurants, for example, call out to visitors to enjoy at a relaxed Caribbean pace. Firmly embedded in nautical history, the English Harbour in Antigua was used a naval base back in the 18th century, and evidence of this fascinating past can be traced along its streets.
Before being welcomed on board a superyacht, it’s also a good idea to say goodbye to the mainland in form of a few locally inspired rum cocktails served at the English style pub.
Shirley Heights
On the second day of a luxury yacht charter vacation in Antigua, there’s no better way to spend the time than by cruising over to the Shirley Heights Lookout to enjoy some incredible views and hit up an unforgettable party.
Ideally visited on a Sunday, live bands typically begin playing on the shore around 4PM, allowing visitors to enjoy a barbeque dinner and some dancing beneath the stars. A renovated 18th century building, visitors are able to get in touch with the history of Antigua during their time here.
Green Island
A short distance off the east coast of Antigua, Green Island is an uninhabited island which calls out to those visiting on board a superyacht. With a range of anchorage options, visitors are able to enjoy a sport of snorkeling or simply kick back with some exotic birdlife flying overhead.
Totally undisturbed, the island itself is a natural haven which calls out to be explored at a leisurely pace. Renowned the world over, the Nonsuch Bay on the east coast is loved by sailors due tos tranquility and constant sea breeze.
On day 4 of a yacht charter vacation in Antigua, anchoring at Deep Bay no doubt offers the best opportunity for some rest and relaxation. The very vision of an idyllic Caribbean beach, the white sands and palm trees create the ideal backdrop for a day of unwinding.
Similar to Green Island, Deep Bay is fantastic for snorkeling, except here there is a shipwreck to dive down and explore. For those more inclined toward a quieter pace, Fort Barrington offers a more relaxed environment for visitors to gather in. With beach bars located a short distance away, elite travelers are also able to end the day with a tasty sundowner.
Great Bird Island
After visiting Deep Bay, the next spot to hit up in Antigua is Carlisle Bay. Made up of untouched sands and clear azure waters, this destination promises visitors a world of calm as well as a range of restaurants to check out.
Like so many other areas of Antigua, the anchorages here are plentiful, and it’s well worth considering a visit to Rendezvous Bay or Johnsons Point if it’s lively bars rather than undisturbed coastlines which are desired.
When it comes to idyllic desert islands, they don’t come much better than Great Bird Island. Indeed, with white sand beaches lined with palm trees and populated by exotic wildlife, there’s few places as attractive to escape to.
Perfect for a nature hike or a spot of snorkeling amongst some vibrant marine life, the destination offers an endless list of vacation possibilities. With a perfect vantage point of the surrounding islands, it’s well worth stepping on to the mainland for a thorough exploration.
Returning to English Harbour in anticipation of disembarkation, visitors have a last opportunity to experience the charms of the natural harbour.
Rounding the week of with a few cocktails and lunch, it’s also an ideal time to pick up a memento of a memorable week.

7 Reasons To Fall In Love With Antigua’s English Harbour
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Destinations
- Mexico and Caribbean
Clear Caribbean waters, pink and white sandy beaches, a hot tropical climate, refreshing breezes, and friendly people draw tourists to the island of Antigua. Located in the Eastern Caribbean roughly 17 degrees north of the equator and ringed with coral reefs, Antigua is the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands.
Known as the “gateway to the Caribbean,” Antigua was a strategic port in the 18th century. English Harbour on the southern tip of the island was once an important naval base and is now a flourishing boating center. It is a vibrant community in the winter, with visitors from around the world and a great base for your stay in Antigua.
1. Lively Boating Center
You’ll feel the nautical vibe as soon as you start walking through English Harbour Town. The yachting crowd, their crews, sun-seeking tourists, and locals fill the small but lively boating center.
A natural deep harbor with several protected bays and two of the best marinas in the Caribbean attract pleasure sailors from around the world. It’s also known as a “hurricane hole,” a place for boats to anchor to get safely out of the way of a Caribbean hurricane. Additional moorage can be found in adjacent Falmouth Harbour, also a natural deep harbor, within walking distance from English Harbour.
Marveling at the luxury yachts in the marinas and watching the comings and goings of both small and large craft from a waterside café, bar, or restaurant are lovely ways to while away a few hours.
English Harbour hosts several world-class yachting events each year. Antigua Sailing Week , a week-long yacht regatta held in the waters off English Harbour at the end of April and beginning of May, is one of the top regattas in the world. It attracts participants and spectators from around the world. When sailing week first began in the 1960s most of the yachts were classic yachts. Over time, the classic yachts became outnumbered by faster, sleeker racing yachts. The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was formed in the late 1980s to showcase only classic yachts. It takes place in late March/early April.
The Superyacht Challenge , held in March, features yachts in excess of 80 feet participating in a competitive but friendly race. The Antigua Charter Yacht Show , held in early December, is an industry-only event connecting luxury yachts available for charter with brokers.
2. Nelson’s Dockyard
English Harbour got its name because the British Royal Navy used the harbour as its base of operations in the area during the 18th century. A naval dockyard in the harbour was an important base for ship repairs. The base became less important after the sugar industry waned in the mid-19th century. The dockyard closed in 1889 and became known as “The Old Dockyard.”
When the dockyard, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was restored in the 1950s, it was renamed Nelson’s Dockyard after Admiral Horatio Nelson, the British hero of Trafalgar who was based in Antigua from 1784 through 1787.
Today the dockyard is a charming British village transplanted into a scenic Caribbean landscape. Restored colonial buildings house tourist shops, restaurants, and bars. The Dockyard Museum, located in the former Admiral’s House, contains exhibits about the dockyard’s history and current archaeological research on the island. The stone columns, which once supported the sail loft roof, are still standing but are now capped to prevent further disintegration.
Nelson’s Dockyard Marina is the only continuously working Georgian-era dockyard in the world. Today luxury yachts, not naval ships, dock there.
3. View From Shirley Heights
Shirley Heights is a restored military lookout and gun battery. It was first used as a lookout during the War of American Independence. It was developed to contain barracks for soldiers, water cisterns, and gun platforms to keep the dockyard below safe. The military complex was named after Thomas Shirley, Governor of the Leeward Islands, who strengthened Antigua’s defenses in 1781.
The high point of Shirley Heights offers a superb view of English and Falmouth harbours that is particularly spectacular at sunset. On Sunday evenings, the lookout becomes a party spot. The Come Party, which runs from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., features a barbecue and local bands. Enjoy some food and listen to Caribbean-flavored reggae music while taking in the view and the sunset. Expect crowds. Pay attention to your footing. There are some uneven cobblestones and slight slopes.
You can walk the half-mile Lookout Trail from Galleon Beach to Shirley Heights. The lower part of the trail is quite steep and can be challenging for some, but offers stunning views and a chance to see native flora. Wear sensible shoes. I chose to take a taxi. The ride to Shirley Heights from Nelson’s Dockyard takes about 15 minutes.
Antigua’s beautiful beaches are the main draw for many visitors. The island boasts 365 beaches, one for every day of the year.
Pigeon Point Beach , about a 10-minute walk from town, is popular with tourists and locals. Warm, calm, shallow water makes this a good beach for children and novice swimmers.
Galleon Beach is one of the quieter beaches on the island. It can only be accessed by car from English Harbour or via water taxi from Nelson’s Dockyard. I took the water taxi and enjoyed the 5-minute ride.
You can easily explore other beaches on the island by taking a taxi, using local bus service, or renting a car. Turners Beach at Johnsons Point on the southwest coast is calm and quiet with a great beach bar and restaurant. Nearby Darkwood Beach features a long stretch of sandy beach. On the northwestern side of the island, Dickenson Bay is the most developed beach with hotels, restaurants, and water sports facilities.
If you choose to explore Antigua’s beaches via rental car, you will need to purchase an Antigua driving license. Your car rental company can arrange this. Note that driving is on the left-hand side of the road.
5. Clarence House
Clarence House , overlooking Nelson’s Dockyard, is one of the finest examples of 19th-century living in the region. The house was built in 1804 for the navy commissioner. Later the house was turned over to the governor of the Leeward Islands as his country residence. The building was severely damaged in a series of hurricanes in the 1990s and turned over to national parks in 2004 for restoration. Restoration work, funded by the winner of the 2011 Antigua Sailing Week, commenced in 2012. Today, Clarence House is a museum and events space.
6. Dining For All Tastes And Budgets
There is no shortage of dining options in English Harbour. Restaurants serving a variety of cuisines line Dockyard Drive, the “strip” between Nelson’s Dockyard and Falmouth Harbour. We simply walked the strip in the evening and selected a restaurant that appealed to our tastes that evening. Local seafood features prominently on all menus.
Outdoor patios and windows in eateries along Falmouth Harbour offer views of the superyachts moored in the marina. You can find beachside dining at restaurants within walking distance of Pigeon Point Beach.
The Galley Bar in Nelson’s Dockyard offers casual open-air dining with harbor views. The Admiral’s Inn in Nelson’s Dockyard has two restaurants with views of the dockyard and the harbor. Seafood Friday at Copper and Lumber Store Historic Inn , also in Nelson’s Dockyard is a popular tradition.
7. Great Places To Stay
You don’t need a yacht to stay in English Harbour. The variety of accommodation options in English Harbour and surrounding area include villas and apartments, beachfront cottages, upscale resorts, boutique hotels, guesthouses, and bed and breakfasts.
The Inn At English Harbour offers elegant luxury on a hilltop overlooking English Harbour. An all-inclusive option is available. The Admiral’s Inn and Gunpowder Suites in Nelson’s Dockyard offers historic charm and casual elegance in an 18th-century building. Copper and Lumber Store Historic Inn , also in Nelson’s Dockyard, is a beautiful intimate boutique hotel.
My husband and I have stayed at a more modest local hotel. The 12-room Ocean Inn is located amid a beautiful garden on a hillside with views of the dockyard and the Caribbean. Our room was small, but the views from the pool and patio area were stunning. One of the coolest features of this hotel was its outdoor Honesty Bar, where you helped yourself to a drink and wrote it down to be added to your bill upon checkout. The Inn is just a 5-minute walk from Dockyard Drive, but it is uphill.
- Use bug spray at dusk when the small no-see-ums are active.
- Although there is plenty to do within the area of English Harbour, you can easily explore the rest of the island if you wish. Hire a taxi guide for a day or two. Ask the staff at your hotel for recommendations.
- English Harbour is a friendly place. Don’t hesitate to meet and talk to people. You’ll discover people from around the world with interesting stories. On our second dinner with an American couple, we discovered they knew one of my husband’s cousins. We also met a young Swiss woman taking 2 weeks vacation after spending several months working as a steward on a luxury yacht, and a man from Florida who’d flown down to do renovations on a yacht.

Escape to the West Indies: Antigua Caribbean Island Vacation
Posted: February 19, 2024 | Last updated: March 12, 2024
Located in the heart of the Caribbean , Antigua beckons with its beautiful beaches, blue waters, and rich history. This enchanting island, discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, has a captivating blend of colonial charm and vibrant culture.
Once a bustling hub of sugar cane production and a strategic naval base, Antigua's past is woven into its cobblestone streets and historic landmarks .
Today, vacationers can explore its centuries-old forts, enjoy water sports, or simply unwind on its sun-kissed shores, making Antigua a timeless destination for relaxation and exploration.
Best Time to Visit Antigua
December to May are the best months to visit Antigua . Winter and spring are the drier months on the island, making it a perfect time to visit because you’re less likely to see rain showers, and it’s still beautifully sunny. The average temperature is 72-74 degrees Fahrenheit.
Visitors usually choose not to visit between May and November because it is wet, humid, and stormy. It is also the Atlantic hurricane season, when there is roughly a 33% chance of a hurricane happening - something you may want to avoid experiencing!
Things to Do in Antigua
Antigua is proudly known as the Caribbean island with 365 beaches, giving you a beach for every day of the year. But it’s also a lot more than that. It’s a lush green island with zip lines and hiking trails. And a naval history still prevalent in its reputation as one of the best yacht sailing islands in the world, culminating in its famous Antigua Sailing Week each April.
Beaches in Antigua
Antigua has 365 beaches with soft golden sand and clear blue waters. The fun part is deciding which to visit! To help whittle it down for you, we’ve selected three of our favorites to kick-start your exploration:
Galleon Beach: Close to Nelson’s Dockyard, this beach has a great variety on offer, from paddleboard hire to snorkeling and a workshop running a rum masterclass. It has something for everyone, plus a very cool restaurant in the middle called Loose Cannon.
Coco Beach: With soft white sands, clear blue waters, and a very chilled-out vibe, this is the ultimate in perfect Caribbean beach. It’s never too busy, and there aren’t many facilities, which is ideal if you are looking for quiet.
Dickenson Bay: if you’re looking for a buzzing Caribbean beach with everything on tap. You can mix it up with water sports, such as scuba diving or paddleboarding, with great food and beach bar vibes.
Naval History at Nelson’s Dockyard
Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is well worth visiting as it’s possibly the best historical destination in Antigua. During his stay at the Antigua Naval Dockyard, a young Horatio Nelson infamously declared English Harbour an “infernal hellhole.” Today, it is a stunningly restored dockyard showcasing what it would have looked like at its peak in the 1740s.
When you arrive, you can either take a tour from the front desk or just pay for your entry and wander around at your own pace. Inside it is well signposted and has a very well-put-together museum with lots to interest you.
If you enjoy hiking, then Fort Berkley at the entrance to English Harbour is great for photo opportunities of Nelson’s Dockyard. If you’re feeling energetic, you can hike the Middle Ground Trail and swim at Pigeon Beach.
Stingray City
Antigua is one of the only places in the world where you can head out into the sea and swim with stingrays - an incredible experience not to be missed!
During the tour, a boat ride takes you to a sandbar in the middle of the sea, where you can snorkel and swim with the stingrays. What is remarkable is that there is no need to be a confident swimmer as the water is only chest-high, and you can see the stingrays swimming through the clear water without the need to snorkel.
As well as snorkeling with the stingrays, you’ll also get a chance to hold and feed them, all under the careful supervision of their guides.
Zipline Through the Rainforest
If you enjoy heights and adrenaline, this activity is for you! The zipline is halfway along Fig Tree Drive, which is worth driving as it is the most beautiful road in Antigua.
Antigua Rainforest Zipline is a small group tour, so you’ll zip through the rainforest together. There are various packages to choose from depending on the number of zip lines you try. At the end of the tour, there is a high-wire assault course that you can also do.
At various points along the course, their professional photographers can catch you mid-flight, making a wonderful souvenir to take home!
If you’ve not done a zip line before, this is an excellent opportunity to try one, as the lines are medium length and height for beginners. You’ll have great adrenaline, and it shouldn’t be too intimidating.
Take a Sunset Boat Tour
Enjoying a boat tour around Antigua is a brilliant way to see the island, as it gives you a different perspective and access to the more remote snorkeling sites. One of the popular spots to visit on a boat tour is Great Bird Island, which has some of the best snorkeling.
Alternatively, if you fancy setting off under sail, a beautiful way to finish your day is watching the sunset from a sailing yacht. Several sunset cruises leave from Jolly Harbour.
Watch a Cricket Match
Even if you’re not a cricket fan, going to watch a cricket match in Antigua is incredibly fun. The atmosphere is like a mini carnival with people in costumes, steel drums playing, and mini-games of cricket being played by spectators on the mounds. You might spend more time looking around than watching the actual cricket match!!
The best tickets are the ones in the mounds, as you’re in the middle of the party atmosphere. Plenty of food and drink are served at the stadium at the catering tents that can be found along the edge of the mounds.
Blend Your Own Rum
An exciting and fun way to spend half a day is to join the Rum Masterclass workshop based at Galleon Beach.
This workshop starts with a rum tasting, and then, after you have decided which rums you like the most, you’ll get to the fun part of blending your rum. You will get to use a pot still to distill your rum in the traditional West Indian way. By the end of the class, you will have your bespoke rum bottle labeled and finished with a beautiful wax seal.
Shirley Heights Lookout Party
No visit to Antigua would be complete without a visit to Shirley Heights Lookout for their party night. The lookout has an incredible view over Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour and beyond to the island of Montserrat.
Every Thursday and Sunday, they host a fantastic evening combining music, food, and rum punch while watching the sunset.
A wonderful atmosphere starts when everyone arrives to watch the sunset, and the local steel band is playing. After the sunset, a local band plays popular cover songs, and once the rum has kicked in, the dancefloor gets lively!
Restaurants in Antigua
Like most other Caribbean islands, you will find plenty of fresh fish on the menu in Antigua. You’ll also get to taste plenty of hot and spicy flavors found in some of their famous dishes, such as jerk chicken and goat curry.
Beach Bum Cafe at Half Moon Bay: This is a popular cafe at Half Moon Bay with both visitors and locals alike. It has a simple menu with dishes served with loads of flavor! It has one of the fish burgers on the island. You can relax, enjoy Half Moon Bay beach in the morning, and book lunch at the cafe afterward.
Casa Roots at Runway Beach: This beautiful restaurant on Runway Beach near Dickenson Bay serves a wonderful combination of French and West Indian cuisine.
Trappas in English Harbour: In the center of English Harbour, Trappas offers a selection of local meals, such as jerk chicken and goat curry. Just keep a little space for dessert, as they are some of the best on the island.
Sheer Rocks: If you are looking for a luxury dining experience with fantastic sunset views, then this is the place for you. This award-winning restaurant combines local flavors with a Mediterranean inspiration.
Day Trips From Antigua
Circumnavigate Antigua on a Boat: Seeing Antigua from the sea gives a fantastic perspective of how beautiful the island is. It’s also a brilliant way to explore beaches and reefs. This particular tour includes a stop at the stunning off-the-beaten-track Rendezvous Beach, which can only be reached by boat or 4x4.
Boat Tour to Barbuda: Barbuda is the exclusive little sister to Antigua, where royalty and celebrities go to relax. A tour of the island from Antigua allows you to explore the unique pink sand beaches, visit ancient Arawak caves, and eat freshly caught lobster.
Off-road Dune Buggy Tour of Antigua: This is an alternative way to explore the island as you’ll ride off-road on dune buggies. You’ll also get to speed through the rainforest too!
Vacationing in Antigua
Whether you spend your days exploring historic sites, lounging on sandy beaches, or diving into its vibrant underwater world, Antigua promises an unforgettable escape that lingers in the memory long after the vacation ends.
