About ProVane

ProVane is designed for a larger boat with wheel (also suits for tiller) and it has emergency rudder ability. ProVane can be mounted off-center.

It’s rudder is 300x1100mm and also the windvane is large, 520x1000mm. ProVane is stand alone system, auxiliary rudder type, no steering lines in cocpit for the wheel.

Selfsteering equipment idea was born while I was sailing around the world across three oceans on a 31-feet yacht.

On the last leg from South Africa to Cabo Verde, flight home being less than 4000 nm away, the old noname self steering gear broke down when a bigger breaker hit the yacht from the side.

This gave me a reason to start developing a new self steering system that would be stronger. The idea was to build the cheapest windvane on the market that would still keep its strength and quality. By now Windy windvane has successfully sailed across the Atlantic ocean many times.

Why a Neptune Servo Pendulum Windvane?

The Neptune Windvane works on a horizontal axis servo pendulum system.  A servo pendulum windvane uses its own rudder, together with the yacht steering system, to keep the boat on course. A servo pendulum windvane is the most efficient form of yacht windvane self-steering available.

Neptune works well when motoring as long as the wind across the decks is above 5 knots. This is a big + and only possible as the mechanism has almost zero friction . The Neptune windvane is simple to operate!

It connects to the yacht’s existing wheel or tiller steering system and, once set, keeps the yacht on course. Build your own servo-pendulum wind vane from a kit

The Hebridean wind vane is an innovative version of the tried and tested servo-pendulum self steering system for sailing boats steered by tiller or wheel. The Hebridean  has crossed Atlantic and Pacific oceans but is also quick and easy to mount for weekend coastal sailing or jaunts across the Channel, Minch or other strait/sea.

Stern freeboard The kit fits yachts with stern freeboards from 600-1000mm (stationary). It is designed specifically for DIY construction. The Hebridean can be tilted up out of the water or lifted off the stern and stored on the guard wires. Or partially dismantled for storage below.

Horizontal vane axle The Hebridean is the only serv0-pendulum vane with an actual horizontal vane axle. One of its unique design features allowing boosted performance, simplified construction and enhanced efficiency in all conditions. John Fleming’s analytical genius was responsible for the innovative geometry on which this landmark development in servo-pendulum windvane design depends.

Simplicity For confidence at sea or in remote locations, the simplicity of its components and assembly crucially allows the unit to be maintained with tools usually found onboard. Building the Hebridean yourself is a hands-on “course” providing you not only with a good understanding of its workings, but also substantial confidence in your ability to maintain it anywhere.

Wood When sourcing your own wood you need 4m of suitable hardwood at 145 x 20mm (EU standard). The longest plank is 1800mm to make the pendulum/paddle for 1000mm height transoms. Here is the wood cutting plan .

Affordable The Hebridean offers DIY sailors the opportunity to build an affordable wind vane in wood and stainless steel, with no welding, bearings or plastic cogs in the main H2 Kit. (there is one worm and wheel in the optional Remote Course Adjustment Kit which can be viewed in action in this youtube video ). All the metal components are prefabricated (drilling and some surface finishing required) ready for you to bolt to the wooden frame. The build requires basic wood-work skills and tools. And several days of absorbing and highly rewarding work.

When John’s health got worse, he asked me again to take on the project. I am an enthusiastic fan of his highly ingenious version of the servo-pendulum self steering-system. I sailed in company with John on and off for a decade — using my own Hebridean (I was his first customer in 2013).

Our Hebrideans steered us around Scotland’s northwest coast and isles. We made three trips in company to the Faroe Islands. On the first of these I sailed happily solo. All thanks to the Hebridean. Dying winds foiled an attempt to reach Iceland: our boats lay calmly hove-to overnight a few miles off the Butt of Lewis. Plan B proved to be a fabulous voyage down the length of the Atlantic coast of the Outer Hebrides. A highlight was anchoring off Callanish in blazing sun.

I hope to continue John’s personal style of service. Please allow a generous lead time as I get used to stocking the components and preparing Hebridean kits while maintaining their high quality…and a reasonable kit price in times of rising costs.

With a combination of Aluminium, Stainless Steel and Hardwood the Sea Feather looks magnificent on the stern of modern, IOR or classic yachts, with a raked, vertical, reverse counter or canoe stern, with or without a transom hung rudder. Self steering keeps a boat on a course with no body at the helm. On long voyages, self steering is not a luxury but a must. It protects from boredom and corresponding fatigue. Simply put, self-steering may save you and your crews’ lives. Once setup, the system will maintain a compass course. The system adjusts to wind and wake. It comes in three variations: wind vane, above deck wheel/tiller, and below deck pilots.

Wind Vane The wind vane is a non electronic option. When sailing, freedom from electrical power can be essential. The wind vane is a green option powered by the very forces driving a boat off course: wind and water. The vane redirects the elements to maintain a compass course. When forced to port, the wind vane changes steering such that the vessel turns and squares back to starboard.

Wind is the driving force. Just like a weather cock, the wind vane rotates according to changes in wind direction. This rotation couples with a paddle in the water. The paddle rotated around a vertical axis amplifies the wind power. The, paddle rotation feeds into the rudder which changes the boat direction. The complex rotations keep the boat on course. The wind starts the process and through the paddle directs the energy to the rudder.

And the more powerful the elements, the better the wind vane performs. The stronger wind more forcefully directs the wind vane keeping the boat more closely on compass.

Models include Monitor (US), Norvane (UK), Fleming (AU). Peter Tiez at Voyager Windvanes (Ontario, CA) makes great vanes and is a knowledgeable, honest guy who I highly recommend. Prices are about $2,000 to $4,000 depending on boat size and extras.

Above Deck Pilot Above deck pilots whether tiller or wheel need minimal installation and easily accessible. The pilot attaches to the tiller or wheel, a non moving part of the cockpit, and the compass. Then, actuated by an electrical motor or hydraulic piston, the pilot keeps a compass course. The boat will stay exactly at that degree heading. Prices are between $500 to $2,000 depending on boat size and autopilot function. Raymarine is a popular brand.

Below Deck Pilots Below deck pilots connect directly to the rudder shaft maximizing power and function. Because the below deck option is directly connected to the rudder changing in motion are immediate and full force. Also, because of the below deck location, these autopilots come with more advanced computers that integrate GPS, course plotting. The below deck can not only stay at a compass direction but follow a course changing direction as necessary. Prices are $2,500 to $4,500 for systems depending on boat size and computer function. Raymarine (Autohelm) and Simrad are two leading manufacturers.

Conclusion Three types of self steering are a wind vane, above deck, and below deck autopilots. The simplest is the above deck. The wind vane and below deck options involve more installation and upfront costs. The wind vane is independent of electricity while the below deck has more brains. Choosing one depends on your personal preferences and goals.

Nay, ye fool. Arghh, personal values? Personal values be darn. It’s all about booty and what type of ship ye have. Don’t give me that. Ye have a lack of perspective in de real world. You are a blimy blowharted landlubbin blubber. Iffin ye dis old salt ever run into ye, I’ll whip ye and make ye scrub me decks.

Arghh, me wast on a long pillaging jolly good voyage alone. I had sacked Cape Corn. Then, I shipped off to ply the corpus waters. The cursade was a long one. From overwork, I was getting worn to a bloody fool. I had to run all watches meself maning the tiller all night. Alone and adrift with loney Mother Carey’s chickens, I started loosing me mind! I was delusional. Me victims haunted me and chiding me greed and callous pirate ways.

I was sleep deprived from the wear without me mateys to trade watch (the excessive rum drinking didn’t help me either). One night, I started hallucinating. Big Red the Pirate me arch enemy and his ghostly lily livered swabs lay alongside and boarded me. I started let off the cannons. But, I could stop the scoundrels. They came aboard. I charged firing me pistols and took out me swashbuckling cutlass. I ran right threw the bloody phantoms and into the briny deep. If ye be pirating alone, install a self steering device. Else will have no fun and may go insane like me.

After I lost me mind forever and jumped ov’rboard, I managed to latch onto me ship’s trailing dink. Luckily the seas were calm. I’m stealing an autopilot the next place I loot for sure. Cape Corn belongs to me and open for all ye real pirates to come. Yo ho ho! Black Fox the Pirate.

Choosing and Understanding Self-Steering Gear

A guide to equipping your boat with an electronic autopilot or windvane: Part II  (published November 2013)

A common piece of equipment found on the modern offshore cruising sailboats is the autopilot. Whether it is an electronic unit, a windvane, or both, the need to relieve the helmsman from steering duty is essential to making safe passages, especially when sailing short of singlehanded.

Continuing our series on choosing and understanding the various self-steering options on the market, the windvane also falls under the category of options that should be considered when making your boat energy efficient offshore.

As stated similarly in Part I (see the October 2013 issue of BWS ) the major choices when faced with the purchase of new self-steering gear are: What conditions the unit is expected to perform in; what are the possible failure modes; what are the challenges when mounting the components to the boat; and last but not least, how much should ongoing maintenance and the expected service life of the gear be considered?

Trim Tab Steering A trim tab windvane, less commonly seen by major manufacturers today, was the forerunner of the modern windvane system and works by affixing a small “trim tab” to the main rudder.  This trim tab is easily moved due to a small surface area, and the windvane’s power is sufficient enough to kick it to one side or the other. As the trim tab swings, it creates a significant water force, causing the ship’s main rudder to move opposite, and this motion of the main rudder is able to steer the vessel. Though this sounds complicated, it works rather well and was a predominant form of steering for many offshore boats until the servo-pendulum was developed.  It had a major drawback, though, in that it could not be fitted to a boat where the trailing edge of the rudder was difficult to access, as in the case of counter sterns.

The servo-pendulum system is the “classic” windvane, with a small servo blade that looks like the windvane’s rudder in the water, and a larger windvane “paddle” in the air.  As the vane tips to one side or the other, the servo blade turns in the water like a mini rudder, but this doesn’t generate sufficient force to steer the boat by itself. Instead, as the rudder turns, the water flowing past it swings it to one side or the other.

For a similar analogy, think of when you stick your hand outside a car window while moving. If you turn your hand sideways and “fly” it like an airplane wing, as you change the angle of your hand the air pushes it up or down. This servo rudder does that same thing in the water, and the force of the water pushing it to one side or the other is surprisingly powerful. This force is then used to turn the main rudder through lines that are affixed to the tiller or wheel of the boat.

The servo-pendulum is rather complicated as it has many moving parts and the constantly moving lines can chafe over long passages. In addition, the variety of moving joints and frequent oscillation cause certain models to have a reputation for breaking down mid-passage; to the immense frustration of their skippers. Thus, it is important to understand the issues facing the specific brand and series of the servo-pendulum you may wish to purchase, as well as to gather a general feel for its reputation in the offshore community as the quality of these devices varies greatly, even from the same manufacturer, as improvements were made from year to year or model to model.

To reduce the complexity of the installation, the auxiliary rudder windvane was invented.

Auxiliary Rudder Vane The auxiliary rudder windvane works on an entirely different principle than the other two types. Instead of the windvane, with its low power, moving a small rudder tab or servo blade to increase power before steering the boat, the auxiliary rudder windvane uses a very powerful vane to directly steer a balanced rudder. There is no connection to the boat’s rudder and typically the boat’s rudder is left centered or angled very slightly to balance the helm. Auxiliary rudder windvanes put a tremendous amount of force on the vane, rudder and boat mounting points, as they are directly steering the boat. This makes it more essential to buy an extremely well made model, as there is very little tolerance for poorly designed gear under these stresses. A well-made system, however, is exceptionally reliable offshore because it only has a few moving parts and no critical lines that can chafe through. A good auxiliary rudder system has the added advantage of being able to serve, in many cases, as a “spare” or “emergency” rudder should something happen to the main rudder or steering system. This feature has helped several sailors return safely to port after catastrophic steering failure offshore.

MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS While windvanes do not require any electricity to operate, and thus tend to be preferred by the offshore sailing crowd, they require a lot of care in mounting, installation, and use. Windvanes are only useful, of course, when the wind is blowing from a consistent direction and with a reasonable amount of force to power the vane. For most systems, five knots is sufficient, but as the wind becomes variable or gusty, the change in apparent wind angle is enough to cause the vane to behave erratically until the wind stabilizes somewhat. As a result, they tend to be most useful in longer passages, particularly in clear air.

Additionally, the mounting of a wind vane system must be extremely strong and rigid, particularly for auxiliary rudder vanes, which exert full rudder forces on their mounting points.  Because of this, the mounting system for most vanes spreads the load across many parts of the transom and can obstruct or prevent the installation of other equipment such as arches, davits, outboard motor mounts or swim platforms. Consult with the manufacturer to get diagrams of the necessary space required and mounting options before committing to a given design.

Also, if you are considering a trim-tab or servo-pendulum system, note that additional modifications to your boat may be required to provide strong and solid fairleads for the control lines, to attach those lines to your wheel or tiller, and in the special case of a trim-tab, to affix the tab to the ship’s rudder. These considerations can be a significant part of the installation effort and expense, so plan your install carefully as these details are often the weak points that bring grief to otherwise solid and reliable vane gear.

Lastly, consider the air you are putting the vane portion of the self-steering into: Is it obstructed by arches, solar panels, dodgers or turbulent air off the mainsail?  In many cases, some of this is unavoidable, so consult with the manufacturer to determine if the obstruction is significant enough to cause an issue with the vane getting clear air to properly steer by. Many vanes stick up far enough to get above deck and cockpit objects, so make sure there is nothing above the vane such as dinghy davits or mizzen sails to obstruct the full range of the vane’s motion.

COMMON FAILURE MODES The windvane is, in general, an exceptionally reliable piece of gear if it is suitable for your boat, and maintained and manufactured properly. However, failures do occur, most notably on trim-tab and servo pendulum systems. Excessive chafe on control lines, control line fairlead breakdown, and screw or retaining pin failure on part of the gear mechanism are the common offshore issues. Fortunately, replacing the lines is not difficult, and spares are easy to carry and refit. If a key vane component goes into the water though, replacing it at sea, even if a spare is carried, can often be impossible in all but the calmest conditions. Therefore, maintaining vane gear and keeping a lanyard or tether on the most critical components is essential.

For instance, with offshore sailors the first and foremost consideration is usually that the unit be able to function at all times in nearly all but the most extreme survival weather and require the least amount of crew interaction necessary. This necessitates that the unit be able to operate independently of electrical systems or engine function, and thus often swings the offshore sailor’s preference in favor of a windvane.

However, if the sailor has a very well equipped yacht, with redundant and ample power supplies, or if he or she expects to motor as much or more than sail, during which electricity is provided by the engine’s operation, an electronic autopilot may make more sense.

For many sailors with the budget, having both a windvane and an electronic autopilot may be a good solution, keeping in mind the situations in which either will be needed. But armed with the awareness of how and where each of the major self-steering types are most useful and in what ways they are often unsuitable, a wise skipper can make the most sensible decision for his vessel and sailing intentions.

Build Your Own Self-Steering Windvane

For the short-handed sailor planning long ocean crossings, a self-steering windvane is not essential but darn close to it. For boats with stern-hung rudders, a self-steering windvane can be constructed with readily available materials and a modest level of skill.

It’s all about leverage. There will be an air paddle which will weathercock to the wind and provide enough torque to move the trim tab which we are going to mount on the trailing edge of the rudder. The trim tab will be a slender, high aspect ratio blade, and we will add some “balance” to it–a little bit of the blade will lead the shaft–all so as to lessen the torque required to move the trim tab when the water is flowing over it and thus increase the amount of leverage the air paddle has over it.

Let’s start with building the trim tab. The trim tab should be somewhere around 10 to 15 percent of the area of the rudder. We decide on the correct diameter of shaft for the blade. In my case this was a 5/8″ diameter stainless steel shaft. We then drill several (say four) holes to take through-bolts which will hold the wooden blade to the shaft. Below is the rough blade held to the shaft with 1/4-20 bolts. Notice the thinner piece on the leading edge, this will give it some balance.

We then permanently attach the blade with the bolts and 3M 5200 and begin fairing:

Following fairing and shaping we will then encase the entire blade in fiberglass roving and epoxy, this will add a great deal of strength and durability.

Now we have to mount it on the end of the rudder. But before we start drilling any holes, we need to work out some geometry. The trim tab must be mounted such that the air paddle will attach at the “no action point”; that is, where the trim tab shaft intersects the axis of rotation of the rudder. This is important because if the air paddle is not attached at this point, the turning of the rudder will wag the air paddle back and forth resulting in poor performance. Hopefully the diagram below will make this clear:

For the gudgeons on the rudder I used 1″ thick pieces of ash which I cut like opened jaws to slide onto the trailing edge of the rudder. They were finally attached with through-bolts and plenty of 3M 5200. For the bottom gudgeon I drilled a slightly oversized hole for the shaft to drop down through. On the inside of the hole I put a few laminates of epoxy and fiberglass roving to minimize friction and make it snug (note: I’ve since inserted a nylon bushing, which works better).

Similarly for the upper gudgeon EXCEPT that I opened the hole to the outboard end so that it formed a “U” and then closed it with a small U-shaped piece of plywood bolted on top and facing inboard (see pics below). Why? So that the trim tab can be removed for servicing.

And finally there is a third gudgeon at the rudder head, which is simply screwed onto a wooden cleat mounted there, again so that it can be easily removed.

Now we have come to the issue of attaching the air paddle. First of all, the air paddle needs to be balanced. This means the axis where the trim tab shaft runs through it is also the center of mass, or if the shaft was held horizontally and the air paddle free to rotate it would not choose to do so absent any wind. Since the plywood air paddle has weight, this will require a counterweight for which I used a regular shaft zinc clamped to a wooden dowel.

With our air paddle and counterweight constructed the last remaining item is the engaging mechanism. I opted for the simplest possible, simply boring a hole up a rectangular piece of timber for the shaft to pass through, and then sawing about halfway up from the bottom (see above photo). The air paddle and counterweight are bolted at the top, while at the bottom, on either side of the bored shaft hole, are 1/4-20 bolts with big handles on them. The opposing nuts are set in epoxy. Thus the air paddle can freely turn on the shaft until I tighten the bolts, when it clamps onto the shaft and the windvane is thus engaged.

And that’s it.   So far this vane has steered me over 30,000 miles.  I can get it to work in winds down in the 3-6 knot range, and then it has steered the boat while running before a gale under bare poles.   In order to work well in light airs the gudgeons must be greased from time to time.  This can easily be accomplished in the water while donning a mask and snorkle.   Just lift the trim tab up a few inches (it cannot actually pop out of the bottom gudgeon before the blade runs up against the upper gudgeon–with the little plywood cap on, of course), clean, grease, and set back down. 

Now one peccadillo I have found with this type of steering vane is the tendency to over-steer. It tends to shove the helm too fast and too far on either side, causing the boat to sail a slalom course. One cure for this is to attach shock cords to your tiller lashings which will greatly dampen the effect. The size and setup of the shock cords will vary from boat to boat. Here is my current setup shown below:

Windvane Self Steering Gear for Sailboats

Not so long ago you could tell offshore sailboats from their coastal cousins by the windvane self steering gear bolted to their transoms, but this is no longer true. These days, many offshore sailors now opt for a compact and discreet electronic steering system instead.

As a big fan of windvane self-steering gears, I think that those sailors who rely entirely on power hungry - and often unreliable - electronic steering systems may be missing a trick.

If there's enough wind to sail, a vane gear will steer the boat for hour after hour without anything other than the occasional minor course adjustment by the helmsman.

And being entirely wind driven, there's no drawdown on those precious amps residing in your battery bank.

Under power though, the windvane self steering gear just won't behave at all - and that's where electronic steering systems come into their own.

Ideally, an offshore sailboat will be fitted with both systems; the windvane self steering gear for sailing and the autopilot for when under engine power. But how do they compare?

Windvane Self Steering Gear and Electronic Autopilots Compared

How do windvane self steering gears work.

Essentially, these entirely mechanical devices sense the apparent wind direction and steer the boat on a course relative to it.

The apparent wind, a concept familiar to all sailors, is the wind we feel when standing on deck.

Only if the boat is stationary will the true wind be the same as the apparent wind.

Sensing The Apparent Wind

For a brief refresher, let's imagine a stationary boat with a ten knot wind on the beam...

As the boat moves ahead the apparent wind will move forward of the beam and increase in strength.

A further increase in boat speed will bring the wind further ahead and increase its apparent speed.

These changes will be sensed by the masthead wind direction indicator, which will align with the apparent wind - and the windvane will react in exactly the same manner.

To carry this scenario to the extreme, if the vessel was a racing trimaran creaming along at 20 knots then it would effectively be close-hauled although still sailing on a beam reach.

So the factors affecting apparent wind are:~

• True wind speed,and
• True wind direction, and
• Boat's course relative to the true wind direction, and
• Boat's speed over the ground.

And the wind is never constant. It gusts, veers and backs, each of which will cause a change in apparent wind, to which the windvane reacts with a course change.

But as the sails are trimmed to the relative wind, the boat continues to sail efficiently, the heading being continually adjusted as if by an expert helmsman.

When the actual course deviates from the desired course to the extent that it's necessary to do something about it, then a gentle tweak of the course adjustment line and some sail trimming gets everything, well, back on course. 

So how do windvane self-steering gears work? Put simply, the windvane senses the apparent wind then through a linkage to either the boat's own rudder or a separate auxiliary rudder, adjusts the sailboat's course relative to the apparent wind.

1 ~ The Windvane

The steering impulse is generated by the apparent wind flowing across the surface of the windvane. The simplest windvanes are made of marine ply, so it's easy to produce a few spares - but it's important that these are cut to the same shape as the manufacturer's design, and absolutely vital that they're within prescribed weight tolerances.

Other materials used are plastic, aluminium and synthetic fabric stretched over a metal frame.

There are two types of windvane: those that pivot around a vertical axis, and those that pivot around a horizontal axis.

Vertical Axis Wind Vanes

Vertical axis windvanes rotate about their leading edge, much like a weathercock, and always point directly into the wind. Consequently, the vane area responding to the action of the wind is relatively small.

A counterbalance is fixed ahead of the axis to prevent gravity deflecting the windvane when the boat heels. When the boat wanders off course the windvane is deflected by the same angle as the off-course deviation.

The corrective steering energy generated by this deflection is small, owing to the negligible torque generated by vertical axis windvanes.

Horizontal Axis Wind Vanes

Horizontal axis windvanes rotate about their lower edge, and are counterbalanced such that, in a no-wind condition or when facing edge-on directly into the wind, they will stand upright until deflected from that condition.

When the boat wanders off course and the wind strikes the windvane from one side, it tilts over exposing the whole of one face to the force of the wind. As a result it has a substantially larger effective area that the vertical axis windvanes.

Horizontal axis windvanes are therefore able to exert considerably more leverage than vertical axis windvanes and are said to be over five times as efficient.

In practice, the axes of such vanes aren't horizontal but are inclined at an angle of about 20°. This is to counteract the characteristic of truly horizontal vanes to slam hard over from side to side producing a correspondingly dramatic effect on the steering. By inclining the axis, the vane's power diminishes as it's pushed over producing a much more sensitive steering effect.

2 ~ The Linkage

There are several ways of transmitting the steering impulse from the windvane to the rudder. They include bevel gears, pushrods and sheathed push-pull cables. This latter method allows the windvane to be positioned to avoid dinghy davits and the like, which may otherwise preclude the use of a vane-gear system. The Auto-Helm is an example of the cable operated type.

Apart from direct action windvane self steering gears where the vane operates its own rudder, most gears use some form of servo effect.

Perhaps the simplest example is where a trim tab (in effect a relatively tiny rudder) is fitted to the main rudder blade. The windvane alters the angle of tab and the water flow acting upon it pushes the rudder blade to one side. It could be said that the tab steers the rudder and the rudder steers the boat.

Much more powerful are what are known as 'servo-pendulum' windvane self-steering gears. On these, the windvane turns a high aspect ratio blade which is swept to one side or other by the water flow. At any sort of speed, the power generated by this action is awesome. Its action is harnessed by steering lines which are led back to the tiller or wheel.

Most gears employ one or other of these servo mechanisms, sometimes even combining the two in the same unit.

Early windvane self steering gears - particularly the super powerful pendulum servo gears - could be quite violent in their actions and it became necessary to dampen their excesses by introducing some form of corrective feedback into the linkage geometry.

There are various ways of achieving this but an easily understood example can be demonstrated by looking at a simple trim tab gear as shown here.

By having the trim tab arm pivot behind the rudder's axis, the action of the tab gradually reduces to becomes zero as the rudder blade turns.

With the boat on course  (A)  the trim tab has a neutral effect but any deviation from the course  (B)  is sensed by the windvane which applies corrective action.

Because the trim tab's control point is astern of the rudder's axis  (C) , as the rudder swings over it progressively negates the the trim tab's effect.

Types of Windvane Self Steering Gears

Direct action with auxiliary rudder.

These are self contained units where the vane directly operates its own rudder with no servo effects being employed. The Hydrovane is by far the best known of this type.

Servo Tab on Main Rudder

One of the oldest and simplest forms of self-steering and probably the least sensitive.

It should be noted that the action of the tab first steers the boat the 'wrong' way - that's to say, its immediate effect before the rudder turns is to further promote the yaw.

This arrangement is shown in the sketch on the right.

Servo Tab on Auxiliary Rudder

Another self-contained arrangement. The main rudder is usually trimmed then lashed to compensate for any helm bias, leaving the self-steering gear to correct minor course deviations.

One drawback with this arrangement is that the auxiliary rudder is relatively small and may not be sufficiently powerful to bring the boat back from being violently thrown off course.

Servo Pendulum on Auxiliary Rudder

Here a servo blade operates its own rudder, dispensing with the need for steering lines. It shares the limitations of the previous type, with the notable exception that the pendulum blade contributes to the steering effect.

Servo Pendulum Acting on Main Rudder

Far and away the most powerful type of windvane self-steering gears.

However, the steering lines must be led to the tiller or wheel, which can be awkward on centre cockpit boats.

Since it's the main rudder that actually does the steering, it doesn't suffer the shortcomings of auxiliary rudder types.

The Monitor and the Aries windvane self steering gears are the best known vane gears of this type.

Servo Pendulum and Auxiliary Rudder self-Steering Gear Types Compared...

My preference? A servo pendulum system like the Monitor, or an Aries windvane self steering gear, does it for me.

Windvane steering: why it makes sense for coastal cruising

cruisers; windvane self-steering makes sense for coastal cruisers as much as 
offshore voyagers. Will Bruton took 
an in depth look at the options 
and how they work.

‘The distance run was 2,700 miles as the crow flies. During those 23 days I had not spent more than three hours at the helm. I just lashed the helm and let her go; whether the wind was abeam or dead aft, it was all the same: she always stayed on her course,’ wrote Joshua Slocum in 1895.

The ability of his long-keeled Spray to hold course without input from the helm was instrumental 
in making her the first yacht to circumnavigate single-handed.

Few modern boats bear these inherently balanced characteristics, so some form of autopilot is necessary to allow the skipper to rest.

Even for crewed passages, it can take an enormous strain off the crew without draining the battery. Some insurance companies even count windvane steering as an additional crew member, such is its contribution to life on board.

Unlike an electronic autopilot, self-steering needs no power

One solution experiencing something of a renaissance, is windvane self-steering.

Requiring no electricity, mechanical self-steering gear was first designed in an age when autopilots were the preserve of large ships and heavy motor cruisers. The principle is relatively simple and pure physics.

What mechanical self-steering cannot do is hold your yacht on a compass course. However, as anyone that’s experienced a sudden wind shift or squall whilst away from the helm knows, steering to a wind angle is preferable most of the time as you are far less likely to crash gybe, and the sails remain correctly set.

Self-steering gear achieves this by presenting a vane directly into the wind. When the wind acts on either side of this vane, it tips, transferring this action through the mechanism below to either a rudder or a servo pendulum which acts on the main rudder, altering the boat’s course.

The two main systems

Servo-pendulum

A derivative of the servo-trim tab principle invented by Blondie Hasler, servo-pendulum self steering gear uses the speed of the yacht going through the water to push against the servo-paddle, creating a substantial force, which is then transferred to the yacht’s own tiller or wheel by control lines.

The wind itself does not provide the power for the steering; rather it adjusts the angle of the paddle, relying on the hydro-mechanical energy of the boat going through the water to do the work of steering the boat.

Popular before the advent of the small craft electronic autopilot, it’s particularly well suited to yachts under 40ft in length, and can be swung out of the water when not in use.

There are now several derivatives, including some available as a self-build kit. Amongst the Golden Globe Race entrants, models included Aries, Monitor, Windpilot and Beaufort systems.

One disadvantage of the servo-pendulum gear is that it uses the yacht’s rudder, meaning it does not double up as an emergency rudder should the yacht’s steering be disabled, although some servo-pendulums can be adapted.

Direct drive systems

Wind vane steering linked to a secondary rudder is the most inherently simple of the mechanical self-steering systems, but relies on a much more powerful transmission of force between a large-surface-area wind vane and the system’s own independent rudder.

Direct drive systems feature a large fully independent auxiliary rudder

This has the advantage of ensuring 
a back up steering method is already on board but also requires a heavy-duty installation to bear the load and strain that will be exerted.

One of the most popular models is the Hydrovane, which is now available in several different sizes and shapes depending on 
the boat it is being installed on.

The size 
and shape of the fabric-covered windvane is directly proportional to the size of yacht, and has been installed successfully on yachts in excess of 50ft in length, including multihulls.

When the boat veers off course, the 
wind hits the vane on one side or the other, deflecting it away from the vertical.

This then acts on a gear that converts 
this sideways movement into rotation to directly steer a relatively large rudder suspended from the boat’s transom via 
the installation framework.

Setting up windvane steering

Balancing the boat.

‘Before doing anything, you have to get the boat sailing well. It demands you take the time to get your boat properly balanced, correctly reefed and with no weather helms; so it actually makes you a better sailor!’ explains Nick Nottingham, who recently fitted a Hydrovane to his Hallberg-Rassy 42, Spellbinder . Nick is about to use the system on an Atlantic circuit.

Self-steering gear works by adjusting the yacht’s course in relation to the apparent wind. The first step to making this work as efficiently as possible is to balance the boat and reduce the amount of input required.

Sailing conventionally, the yacht should be easy on the helm and not overpowered.

Setting the system for the conditions

Whether servo-pendulum or direct drive, most self-steering systems have one or more methods of adjustment for the conditions. In light airs, the wind vane will be exposed as much as possible to the wind, to exert the maximum force on the system, whereas in heavier weather, the vane’s height can be lowered, reducing the force acting on the system.

Some systems, like the Hydrovane, Monitor and Beaufort have different sized vanes that can be swapped, while the Windpilot and Aries allow the vane to be raked aft, presenting a shorter level.

With the wind vane attached, you are ready to remove the locking pin and engage the steering mechanism

On some set ups, the power exerted on the steering system can also be adjusted at the point where the wind vane meets its pivot, just like changing sensitivity on an electronic autopilot. By controlling the rotation of the rudder or paddle created by the windvane, you control how aggressively the system corrects the boat’s course.

Changing the gearing at the point where the wind input creates the steering output achieve an increase or decrease of ratio.

Engaging the system

To engage the system, set the yacht on course and adjust the wind vane so that the wind is flowing over it with the least resistance, like a blade.

If you a using a system with its own rudder, centralise and lock the yacht’s main rudder, simultaneously engaging the self-steering mechanism.

Once engaged, monitor how the system adjusts and double check your sails are trimmed correctly.

As the vane moves it will adjust the steering accordingly.

In heavy weather, reduce the system’s power to ensure the least amount of strain.

Self-steering systems work efficiently in strong winds but most will steer comfortably in light airs as well.

Course adjustments

When the wind vane is vertical, you are on course. When the vane is deflected, the system is adjusting course.

Changing the direction you want to go in is simply a matter of altering the self-steering system’s vane angle relative to the wind.

On most systems this is achieved by a steering line that can be run into the safety of the cockpit, meaning you do not necessarily need to adjust the vane itself directly.

Make small adjustments until the yacht comes onto the desired course, trimming the sails appropriately.

A standalone system?

Whilst self-steering systems offer a much more resilient option than an electronic autopilot for heavy weather, when there is no sailing wind, they cease to be useful.

For this reason, most cruisers also have a conventional electronic autopilot on board to steer under engine.

In the case of systems incorporating a rudder, many also make it possible to easily engage a tiller pilot onto the system’s auxiliary rudder for use under engine.

Self-steering on the Golden Globe Race

If there’s one place that mechanical 
self-steering fandom bordered on the evangelical this year, it was at the start of 
the Golden Globe Race .

With this year’s revival competition using 1960’s technology and electronic wizardry strictly prohibited, mechanical self-steering systems are effectively the only option for competitors. Each has chosen carefully.

Competitors in the race are using a variety of systems including Hydrovane, Aries, Monitor, Windpilot and Beaufort.

Due to the nature of the boats competing being long keeled, they are ideally suited to mechanical self-steering, naturally holding course better than a modern hull. However, should systems fail and prove unrepairable, it will be hard 
for them to remain competitive in the race.

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.

Her twin MTU 16V4000 series diesel engines (total horse power of 7200) transmit through Kamewa waterjets to allow this 189 gross ton maxi-yacht speeds of up to 40 knots. Just off an extensive technical and cosmetic refit, she is ready to be experienced by the most demanding performer.

The pershing range stands out for its superior performance, continuous stylistic development, top quality materials and painstakingly designed interiors that offer ultimate comfort. advanced construction methods, powerful engines reaching 7400 mhp and the use of surface propellers , hydrojets and gas turbines all combine to give pershing yachts a distinctively sporting trim and up to 50 knot peak speeds..

Pershing yachts are produced in the Mondolfo shipyard (located right in front of the original yard) , a futuristic site of 53,000 square metres – out of which more than 36,000 are open air – designed by the architect Sandro Sartini . This is not just a production site: this is a striking scenario, which perfectly matches beauty, technology, functionality, and dream, a space painstakingly designed for enhancing the continuous development of the range, also in terms of yacht sizes.

The new production site features a large and innovative painting booth of 4400 sq. m, where boats are dry painted. The test basin (33 m long, 7.5 m wide and 2.3 m deep) is used for all hydraulic tests (engines, exhausts, bilges, and generators) and for waterproofing tests of yachts. The travel lift, with a carrying capacity of 130 tons, completes activities with ship haulage and launching in the test basin. The brand is in constant search for new ideas and new paths for a further international growth. Pershing stands out for its capacity to customize its models according to the different needs of any new market worldwide.

The motor yacht PERSHING 115/2 is a 35 metre 115 (foot) well sized composite vessel which was newly built at Pershing (Ferretti Group) and devised by Ferretti Group Engineering Division . Sleeping 10 passengers and 4 crew members, motor yacht PERSHING 115/2 was named 115/2 .

The naval architecture office that made the design with respect to the yacht is Ferretti Group Engineering Division . Further, the interior designing was sucessful creation of Fulvio De Simoni . The Pershing 115 motor yacht combines capable sea going qualities with a very impressive cruising speed. The Pershing 115 is fitted with engines varying in size depending on the boat and they range from 3,700 hp and an impressive 42 knots cruising speed to 5,000 hp gas turbine and a seriously fast 55 knots cruising speed! The Perishing 115 combines this superior performance with comfortable conditions and sleek attractive lines.

Powered by twin MTU / TEXTRON LYCOMING gas turbine engines, PERSHING 115/2 will attain a top speed of 55 knots. Coupled to the PERSHING 115/2 engines are twin water jets.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

She has accommodations for 18 guests and 19 crew members on board. The VIP suites have fold-down balconies that add to the grandeur.

The onboard atmosphere is bright and inviting with subtle finishes. The entertainment areas are open to provide more sheltered and intimate formal spaces.

The yacht has an extensive health and beauty center with a spa and an expansive beach club.

The beach club creates the perfect area for guests to enjoy indoor/outdoor living. There is also a swimming platform where guests can leap into the water below.

She has an on-deck jacuzzi to soak up the bubbles and the views. The yacht also has an elevator for convenient access to her different decks and a comprehensive gym onboard. The tender garage is brimming with towable toys and tenders.

Reymond Langton Design also contributed to the exterior design of the LADY LARA yacht. She was built by Lürssen and delivered from their Rendsburg shipyard in 2015. The exterior has sweeping curves and elegant but masculine features.

LADY LARA was code-named project Orchid when she was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in 2015 and later renamed. She has a full displacement hull which gives her exceptional speeds in the water.

She has a white aluminum superstructure and teak decks throughout. The exterior is accented by underwater lights, which illuminate her at the night.

The LADY LARA yacht is a 91m superyacht with a beam of 14.82m and a draft of 4m. The vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines and has a displacement of 2,945 gross tons.

She features an advanced stabilization system that provides guests with the best comfort levels on board by minimizing the rolling motion of the vessel. The $180 million yacht has a $14 – $15 million annual running cost.

She is an award-winning yacht that holds an award from the Asia Boating competition in 2016. LADY LARA has a Lloyd’s Register classification.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

Wind vane self-steering is a mechanical device which automatically pilots a sailboat without the intervention of a helmsman by orienting it with respect to the wind.

These devices are ideal for sailing long distances, especially when the wind blows steadily from the same direction.

A large vane, or blade pivots as wind direction changes. A gearing system links it to a trim tab on the trailing edge of the rudder, which alters vessel heading as it moves. This maintains the vessel's orientation with respect to the wind, keeping the sails properly trimmed regardless of wind shifts. Since the boat's course changes with the variation in wind direction, this system cannot completely replace an autopilot. Instead, it constitutes a useful complement which consumes no electricity.

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
