Seiko Velatura Yachting Timer

Launched in 2007, Seiko’s Velatura collection is designed to withstand the rigors of open ocean racing. For 2009, Seiko improves the the Velatura Yachting Timer, making it lighter, tougher, and more resistant to the elements. The case is made from titanium, covered with a new hard coating. The watch has a new screw-in crown system that ensures water resistance to 20 bar or 200 meters. A new strap combines leather and ballistic nylon to offer a blend of good looks and strength. The dial is also new, with the pre-set start times highlighted in bright yellow and blue for easier legibility.

There’s also a new model for women – the Velatura women’s chronograph. It is available in stainless steel with regular or mother-of-pearl dials, both of which are set with 16 diamonds. This piece is also available with a choice of leather strap or stainless steel bracelet.

The men’s Yachting Timer retails for about 950 Euro, and the women’s chronograph ranges from Euro 590-640. You may click the images to view larger versions.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The Seiko company was founded in 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop in Tokyo. Eleven years later, in 1892, he founded the company Seikosha Co, where initially wall clocks were produced. Soon they were followed by pocket watches and watches with an alarm function. In 1913 Seiko (which means ‘precision’ in Japanese) manufactured its first wristwatch, and today the brand is well known for its inventions over the years.

Already in 1958 Seiko started with the developement of quartz movements, which let to the first commercial quartz wristwatch of the world in 1969, the Seiko Quartz Astron. The brand’s tradition in sports timing started at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where they served as Official Timekeeper. Ever since Seiko has been involved in many sports events, eg athletics, football and sailing.

Early 1980’s Seiko developed the caliber 7A28, the world’s first analog quartz chronograph. This fully adjustable quartz movement has no plastic parts in the gear train and can be sericed and adjusted like a mechanical watch. In the years to follow the caliber 7A28 was used in a great number of different models. The 7A28-7020, for example, was worn by Roger Moore in the 1985 James Bond movie  ‘A View To A Kill’.

The 7A28-7090 regatta variant debuted in 1982 as the first real Seiko Yacht Timer, and appeared in catalogs as of 1983. It immediately stood out for its design. With the two big pushers at 10 and 2 o’clock it looked similar to a bullhead chronograph. The 9 o’clock minutes sub register features a 30-minutes counter, devided in 6 x 5 minutes in alternately light and royal blue, and a distinct yellow hand. On the outer ring of the dial there’s the yachting countdown scale for the seconds, running backwards from 60 to zero. After 1985 the Seiko Yacht Timer Quartz 7A28-7090 disappeared from the catalogs and the production ceased.

Second half of the 1980’s Seiko developed a new four jewel quartz chronograph, the caliber 8M. Besides setting the time, it also uses the crown as a selection tool by which you can choose the mode of the watch, as shown in one of the registers. It has a countdown (timer) function, what makes it highly suitable for a yachting watch. In timer-mode the movement runs actualy counterclockwise! The countdown timer can be set by one-minute intervals between 1and 30 minutes, or you can choose between one of the preset timers for 5, 10 or 15 minutes.

From early 1990 Seiko produced two series of yacht timer watches, the 8M35 and the 8M37 models . Compared to the 8M35 models, the 8M37 models have the movement mounted ‘up-side-down’. That automatically means the crown and pushers are placed on opposite sides.

In time-mode, when the watch shows the actual time, the hour hand seems a bit odd. More like a seconds hand actually. But when you switch to timer mode, you understand why. This hand then becomes the second hand for an accurate countdown. And as I said before, the movement runs counterclockwise in timer mode. In a short period of years, from 1990 upto 1993, several yachttimer models were released by Seiko.

Cal. 8M35-6010, the more rare silver version, cal. 8M35-8000/8009 (ref. SEQ001P) and 8M35-800A (ref. SEQ003P) with a plastic blue or black turnable bezel.

Both cal. 8M37-6000, either with a silver case and dial (ref. SBBH005) or with a black case and dial (ref. SBBH007). Originally with a black rubber strap.

Finally the cal. 6M37-8000, ref. SBBH013, and the 6M37-8019, ref. SGX006. The last one was released for the 1992 USA Olympic games.

Variations:

Radiant Yacht Timer, in silver case ref. TUH996PM, or two-tone case ref. YUH999PM. Obviously both with a Seiko 8M37 movement.

In 1993 Seiko changed the design of their Yacht Timers radically. Again the brand developed a new quartz regatta movement, the caliber 6M37, this time inspired by the old mechanical movements that used the 5-dot countdown system (first used by Aquastar in the 1960’s ).

The first model that was released, is the cal. 6M37-6000.

1995 Seiko introduced the Yacht Timer Sports 200   models, as part of The Great Blue series. Inspired by the older mechanical movements, Seiko developed their quartz movement with the 5-dot countdown system, caliber 6M37-6010.

At Baselworld 2007, Seiko launched a new marine collection, the Velatura. The collection included two new calibers, one of them the Yachting Timer caliber 7T84. Obviously Seiko stepped away from the 5-dot countdown system again.

With the launch of the Velatura series in 2007, Seiko rose to the challenge to build watches that perform on the open ocean, with a collection characterized by robustness, high functionality and durability. Also in 2007, Seiko was selected as the Watch Partner of the International 49er Class Association.

To mark the fourth year of their partnership, Seiko launced a new model in the Velatura collection, a standard chronograph housing with the caliber 7T62 Alarm movement. Not with a special countdown function, but with a coloured 5-10-15 minutes subdial.

The watch is available with either a stainless steel case with black hard coating and a polyurethane strap (ref. SNAE17) or a stainless steel case with blue hard coating and a stainless steel bracelet with three-fold slasp (ref. SNAE19).

Apart from features and functionality, Velatura watches are real head turners. The build is solid and material top-notch. Women's Velatura watches feature diamonds which adds to the charm. The whole series is a resounding success for Seiko. The Velatura range from Seiko is designed for marine use. But that just makes it tougher for normal use too. Seiko Velatura watches are famous for many reasons but the variety of hands' shapes is one of the most striking. Velatura designers obviously took an artistic approach in regard to the minutes and hours hands: each consists of two diamond-like shapes linked at the center of the watch by the axis. Seiko Velatura Men's and Ladies' differ in several significant design characteristics. Velatura Men's come almost strictly with black dials, on which various sub-dials and indicators appear with the help of white, red and blue colors. Velatura Ladies are available with white and pinkish faces, the latter employing mother-of-pearl.

A Guide to: the World Time Complication

As the name suggests, a World Time watch allows the wearer to read the time in the world’s 24 major time zones. But what else do we know about this incredible watch complication?

As the name suggests, a World Time watch allows the wearer to read the time in the world’s 24 major time zones.

Who invented it?

It was invented by independent watchmaker Louis Cottier in 1931.

How does the World Time complication work?

The watch’s hour and minute hand are coordinated with an outer chapter ring displaying the names of 24 reference cities for each time zone. A pusher, or button, on the case enables the wearer to move the chapter ring one city at a time. The hour hand automatically jumps an hour ahead or behind to the time in the reference city (in other words, your local time). A rotating 24-hour inner chapter ring turns once a day, showing the time in the other cities on the dial.

To tell the time in another city, line up the watch’s hour hand with the reference city that corresponds with your local time using the rotating bezel. For example, if you are in London and it is 11pm, align ‘London’ with 11 on your watch face. To find out what the time is in Moscow, swap to the 24-hour dial and read the time that aligns with Moscow, which would be 1am. At the same time, you can tell the time in all the other cities. The time difference between local time and all other cities is measured in hours only, since the minutes stay the same.

Cottier’s mechanism for reading multiple time zones was not successful, but it would inspire his son, Louis – a double Patek Philippe prize winner before he’d even completed his apprenticeship – to develop his ‘heures universelles’ in 1931. The complication featured the local time with hour and minute hands at the centre and a rotating 24-hour ring bordered by the names of different cities or places. It was originally designed for pocket watches, but, in 1937, with these timepieces becoming less popular, Patek Philippe commissioned Cottier to produce the first World Time wristwatch. He would go on to supply them to many other prestige brands, including Rolex and Vacheron Constantin .

Cottier’s mechanism is still used today as the base for most World Time watches, though they have become more elaborate in design over the years. Patek Philippe is particularly known for its extraordinarily beautiful cloisonné enamel maps and dials that feature mythical creatures and symbols.

A World Time watch can tell you a lot about the geopolitics of the time in which it was made thanks to the choice of major cities displayed around the dial. The most recent change came at Baselworld 2016, when Patek Philippe unveiled its new ref. 5230 with a World Timer to reflect a number of shifts, including the fact that Dubai has replaced Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as the internationally-recognised representative city of its time zone.

Famous fans

These highly-attractive timepieces are celebrated by collectors and enthusiasts as much for their elegant design as their instant access to multiple time zones. It’s no surprise, then, that tennis ace and frequent flier Novak Djokovic is a fan of the World Time watch. American comedian Kevin Hart, meanwhile, has been spotted wearing Patek Philippe’s World Time ref. 5230R-001 in stunning rose gold.

A slight problem

In a world of smartphones and instant information, one may think a complex, and expensive, watch complication has had its day. But, with it beauty and easily readable mechanism, the World Time watch remains just as relevant as it ever was. The only slight problem is that there are now more than 24 time zones (37 in total) and not all of them are a full hour apart  ̶  for example, India is GMT+5.5 hours, so it can have its drawbacks. Some brands, such as Vacheron Constantin, have tried to improve on the original design by implementing all possible time zones, so if you are a regular traveller to India, there is a solution.

One other thing to be aware of is daylight savings time cannot be calculated using a World Time watch bezel so the wearer will have to take this into account.

Patek Philippe World Time ref. 5930G – by combining the calibers found in the 5990 and 5130 movements, Patek Philippe created the world’s smallest and thinnest world-timer-chronograph on the market. Launched in 2016, its ‘winglet’ style lugs will please any vintage collector, but the electric blue dial, as well as innovations such as the flyback chronograph, brings the model nicely into the modern age.

But if you're time zone-challenged like I am, your confusion may have gotten worse having been stuck in one time zone for two years or so. When I pick up the phone to call or text friends, family, or colleagues, I'm bound to wake someone up because I forgot that, yes, New York is in fact ahead of San Francisco, or my report on my amazing dinner in Switzerland will hit someone's inbox right when they're just starting to get hungry again after lunch at the office. That's one of about a dozen reasons (some more practical than others) that I dream of owning a GMT.

I saw my first Rolex ref. 1675 GMT-Master at the RRL store in New York's SoHo – yes, Ralph Lauren's western outpost has watches – and I immediately fell in love. I'd heard of them but had no idea how they worked except the concept that you could track a second time zone. Once you've got the hang of the GMT in your hands (or on your wish list), you might wonder about the origins of the watch. Instead of digging into a philosophical and historical deep dive into the concept of time zones, I'd recommend reading an equally-thorough article on the history of the Rolex GMT-Master. I think it would be hard to argue that any other watch has been more closely associated with the concept of travel. The fact that we can just say "GMT" to refer to almost any travel time watch is a testament to that. So if there's one watch that is worth knowing every reference inside and out, I'd argue it's the GMT.

I'll admit, a not-insignificant portion of my dream of owning a Rolex GMT comes from this story by Jason Heaton. It's become a nearly-monthly tradition for Cole Pennington to remind me that he sees a common thread between me and the man in this story – the adventuresome spirit, the connection to National Geographic , and the fact that I view buying a watch as a lifetime commitment. I consider this one of the all-time great HODINKEE stories and it perfectly encapsulates why a GMT is a watch with a strong emotional pull.

A Week On The Wrist: The Tudor Black Bay GMT

Maybe a Rolex GMT is a bit too expensive, or like many people, you find yourself unable to stomach the waitlist that comes with wanting one of the most in-demand watches on the market. In the years since James Stacey's story on the Tudor Black Bay GMT, there are a lot more options on the market, including from Tudor. But James' story on this specific watch will long remain proof that the Black Bay GMT isn't "settling" for a lesser watch, but a fantastic alternative option altogether.
