Frequently asked questions

How to get a commercial skipper’s license

The recommended route to obtaining a commercial skippers license is to do two training courses which consist of the Day Skipper Shorebased course and the Day Skipper Practical course. These are both included in the Professional Yachtmaster offshore course. The first covers the theory and knowledge-based training, such as meteorology, navigation, pilotage techniques and collision regulations; the second is putting this theory into practice in addition to developing the practical skippering skills of crew management, boat handling, practical pilotage and passage making.

What is a Yachtmaster?

A Yachtmaster is a person with a wealth of maritime knowledge who can cope with plain sailing and motor cruising and is also able to cope in demanding situations. The RYA (Royal Yachting Association) are the national body for dinghy, yacht and motor cruising, all forms of sail racing, RIBs and sports boats, windsurfing and personal watercraft and a leading representative for inland waterways cruising.

UKSA Superyacht Cadetship gains momentum

The four-year course offers a structured pathway into the superyacht industry….

Image for article UKSA Superyacht Cadetship gains momentum

Maritime training and education charity UKSA has announced the graduation of 30 students from its flagship Superyacht Cadetship course. With the support of UKSA, over 40 per cent of the course’s graduates have already secured employment, with the remaining students actively seeking new opportunities across the superyacht industry.

The four-year programme offers a career path to Officer of the Watch (Yacht <3000GT) and onward to Master (Yacht <3000GT) qualifications, and combines academic studies with periods of paid work on superyachts. Cadets also have the option to complete a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Operational Yacht Science through Falmouth Marine School.

UKSA’s charitable partners made the professional course possible for 37 per cent of this year’s cohort, with sponsorship funding for the cadets coming from The Seafarers Charity and Trinity House, with others receiving support from the Steven Thomas Bursary, and the Michael (Milo) Hanlon Bursary.

The funding options that are available to UKSA students are crucial for many in securing their places on the course. As UKSA’s CEO Ben Willows explains; “For some students, the difference between starting their journey and not, is the funding options we have available at UKSA. We are continually working to grow the number of funded students.”

For 2022, UKSA anticipates seeing the numbers participating in the Superyacht Cadetship course increase, with 40 young people expected to graduate from the first phase of the course next time around. This means that the UKSA will provide even more young people with a structured and supported pathway into a rewarding, long-term career.

UKSA’s New Course For Engineering On Small Superyachts

uksa superyacht training

In response to the shortage of engineering skills in the maritime sector, UKSA is introducing an Engineering Crew training course. This program is designed for both experienced and aspiring crew members who aim to work on small boats or enter the superyacht industry through the engineering pathway. Read on for more about it!

UKSA Engineering Course

    About The Course

The course is for experienced or new crew who wish to work on small vessels, or enter the superyacht industry through the engineering route.

The 5-week UKSA engineering course trains students in professional workshop practices, correct and safe use of tools and workshop equipment. In addition, it delivers the MCA Approved Engine Course 1 and 2, STCW basic safety training and Powerboat training. Finally, students will complete the Mental Health for Seafarers course which prepares them for the challenges of life at sea.

Delivered by UKSA’s instructors, the Engineering Crew training course takes place at their Cowes headquarters on the Isle of Wight. This inclusive offering encompasses accommodation, daily freshly prepared meals, personalised mentoring, access to a dedicated careers course manager, use of the on-site swimming pool, and full gym access.

Transferable Skills

Chris Frisby, Director of Training and Operations at UKSA, has commented on the course:

“At UKSA, we are developing skills for future roles and creating the next generation of crew while supporting students to ensure they have the best opportunities for career progression. “ At UKSA, our experienced and dedicated team are really excited to be offering this new engineering course which will help students start a career in the superyacht industry or wider marine industry after just five weeks”.

The course is suited for individuals with some engineering background seeking to transition these skills into the maritime sector. It is ideally tailored for hands-on, highly motivated individuals with a foundational understanding of engines and tool usage, aspiring to be part of a crew navigating challenging environments globally.

Upon successful completion, participants receive various qualifications, including:

  • the UKSA Superyacht Crew Training Certificate
  • MCA AEC1, MCA AEC2, MCA Workshop Skills Training
  • STCW Basic Safety Training
  • MCA Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • Mental Health for Seafarers, along with several RYA certifications

These qualifications are not only relevant to the superyacht industry but are also transferable across various sectors, such as workboats, tugboats, standby vessels, seismic survey vessels, oceanographic research vessels, government patrol vessels, and fishing boats.
