The A-list population of the island enjoy an average yearly temperature of 28°C, which only reduces to 25°C in January. A summer charter is particularly preferable with 8 hours of sunshine a day and the temperature of the Caribbean Sea around 30°C.

Five yachts competing at the 2023 Superyacht Challenge Antigua

As the Superyacht Challenge Antigua returns to the island this week (6-12 March), we take a look at the line-up of yachts vying for the top prize – a barrel of rum – in one of the first Caribbean regattas of the year...

No regatta is complete without a Huisman-built sailing yacht charging through the field and Action is a familiar face on the regatta circuit. The 37.3-metre sailing yacht will be competing in this regatta for the second year in a row and will showcase the best of her Dutch creators Dykstra Naval Architects and Royal Huisman . After winning her class last year she is the defending champion and will undoubtedly put up a tough challenge to her competitors in 2023.

Catalina is part of the history of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua, as her former owners, the Gosnells, donated the ship’s bell which is now the only trophy awarded at the event. The Gosnell Trophy is won through a peer vote for the yacht which has “competed in the spirit of the regatta." Previously named Timoneer , the 44.8-metre yacht was built at Vitters with exterior design and naval architecture by Dubois Naval Architects . Catalina has been cruising around America since competing in last year's event and has scaled the west coast of the US in the past six months.

Gitana was built-in New Zealand by Fitzroy Yachts and delivered in 2009. Previously known as Salperton and Palmira , she has been a regatta winner since she left the shipyard and has been nominated for multiple awards in her lifetime including Best Sailing Yacht 45m+ at the 2010 World Superyacht Awards. She received a refit in 2017 and 2020 ensuring her already well-equipped sloop has been kept in racing shape. Exterior design and naval architecture on the 45 metre are courtesy of Dubois Naval Architects .

The Sparkman & Stephens sailing yacht Kawil is another regular on the superyacht regatta circuit. She has travelled far and wide to compete in some of the most prestigious events around the world and even lifted the first-place trophy at the New Zealand Millennium Cup regatta in 2020. Kawil started life in America at the Derecktor Shipyard and can sleep six guests in three cabins with a spacious pilothouse that provides wind and sun protection. Having missed out on first place in her class by a mere point last year, she will no doubt be back with a vengeance at this year's event.

Zig Zag is entering the Superyacht Challenge Antigua for her seventh year in a row and has previously won the Gosnell Trophy at the 2020 regatta. She was built by Southampton shipyard Oyster to a design by Humphreys Yacht Design and is one of 17 Oyster 82 models built. At 25 metres long, she is one of the smallest yachts competing in this year's regatta, but this British beauty certainly packs a punch having just won the 2022-2023 Southern Ocean Racing Conference in Port Canaveral.

Antigua Charter Yacht Show

4 – 9 december 2024.

In December 2024, the  Antigua Charter Yacht Show  returns to the beautiful Falmouth Harbour. The world’s yachting elite descends on Antigua Island’s beautiful coastlines for the world’s favourite destination show for professionals in the superyacht and brokerage industries.

Located at the Nelson’s Dockyard UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the Falmouth Harbour Marina and the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, the industry-only event will celebrate its 62nd anniversary. All yachts on display are available for luxury yacht charters, providing yacht brokers with a unique chance to learn about the Caribbean fleet first-hand. The yachts will welcome guests for exclusive tours, networking activities, and social events.

Superyachts consultants will meet with captains and crews of the yachts, who will provide insights into the charter fleet’s capabilities. Brokers will receive all of the information they need regarding amenities and facilities on board, allowing them to better match their customers with their perfect superyacht. Bonus: Held in December, this is ideal time to travel to the  Caribbean  islands.

Everything You Need to Know About The Antigua Charter Yacht Show 2023

Set to be a tremendous event, the Antigua Charter Yacht Show is just around the corner as it marks the beginning of the Caribbean sailing season. The show is a long-lived tradition of beauty, culture and partnerships, setting the stage for some of the world’s finest charter vessels.

From Monday the 4th to Saturday the 9th of December, the Antigua Charter Yacht Show returns for its 62nd Anniversary. It is an invitation-only event, where key players of the yachting industry join at the luscious locations of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour. Attendees have the opportunity to partake in endless networking opportunities, celebrating the charter market of the superyacht industry. 

The 2023 show is shaping up to be just as exciting as previous editions, featuring a diverse range of activities that showcase all aspects of the industry. Attendees can marvel at the 50+ yachts on display at the show, ranging from 18 to 90 metres, as the most incredible offerings of the charter market gather in the Antiguan waters. Expect to see notable names of the industry, including NERO , PROJECT X and SAMSARA . The Antigua Charter Yacht Show is a hub for brokers to seek out the best yachts for their clients, with around 2,000 crew members and captains attending the show every year.

Returning for the 23rd Annual Event, the Concours de Chef and Tablescaping Competitions remain a highlight of the Antigua Charter Yacht Show. Showcasing the exceptional dining opportunities within the yachting industry, this year’s competition is focused on global cuisine inspirations with an emphasis on sustainable products, largely in keeping with the growing importance placed on sustainability within the yachting industry. 

There are a number of social events and parties curated specifically for attendees of the show, including a festive evening with steel pan music and a Ken & Barbie dress-coded After Show Mingle, designed for guests to not only make the most of their time on the island, but to ensure the perfect ambience is created for guests to unwind, network, and forge long-lasting relationships.

SuperYachts in Antigua

We really enjoy pulling into Falmouth Harbor, Antigua and then taking a dinghy ride around all the billionaires’ yachts. We have seen big yachts in Annapolis, MD, our home waters, but nothing like the yachts in the Caribbean where there are deep harbors. The hub of this location is the Antigua Yacht Club and Falmouth Harbor Marina. Our boat is far too small of to dock at these facilities, there is no way we would ever even try to dock here. It’s amazing to see a sailboat that is 90 feet long with a mast of 150 feet with 5 spreaders look like a dinghy and is dwarfed by the yachts on each side. FORGET IT.  Here is a photo essay to show the scale.

SUPERYACHTS are charter yachts

That is right, you can charter many of these yachts for a vacation and the rich do rent them. By making the yacht a charter yacht, for rent, the owner can use the expenses to offset their income. Antigua, what a great place to sail, explore, sightsee and simply enjoy. We really do like this island. I hope you enjoyed the superyacht tour of the yachts here on the island in Jan 2022.

If you have AMAZON PRIME and or shop with AMAZON, then maybe you might like to see JEFF BEZO’s yacht. We saw this off Sint Maarten at Christmas time. Yacht FLYING FOX is reported to be his, but it is not confirmed. It is only 446 feet long!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t go getting Yacht Envy Imagine…if you had one of these you could spend your whole life just cleaning one deck….and probably not finish But you might have fun tinkering with the engines

I saw you in your dingy going by our moored Yacht M/V Big Ego. By the time one of my deck hands could get to the bow to ask you aboard , Buns was already mid ship and beyond hearing range.I fired the deckhand and am installing a flashing light sign so that this never happens again. Please stop by for truffles and mimosas if you can. Your confident train engineer; Aye Tinnk aye Caan.

Comanche is also owned by Jim Clark along with Hanuman, a J-boat replica. We see many of these boat in New England in the summer – a whole other world from ours but fun eye candy.
