Mangusta Oceano 44 Reviewed

Roald Dahl’s character Willy Wonka had a great glass elevator that transported him wherever he wanted to go. Hull No. 1 of Overmarine’s Mangusta Oceano 44 reminded me of that story. This yacht is elevated by glass, and it has the potential to take owners just about anywhere.

This 146-foot, 461-gross-ton steel-and-aluminum design, perhaps more so than any other yacht I have seen recently, takes the tri-deck concept to new heights. Based on a hull platform from Pierluigi Ausonio and with design by Alberto Mancini, this superyacht has a particularly strong, modern profile and a light, bright, contemporary interior. Mancini is skilled at blending inside and outside spaces, in this case with sole-to-ceiling windows, sliding doors, and ghost bulwarks and balustrades.

Powered with twin 1,700 hp MTU 12V 2000 M86 diesels, the Oceano 44 reportedly reaches a top speed of 15 to 16 knots, depending on load. That said, an efficient 11 to 12 knots will be more than enough for typical cruising. At that speed, and with a fuel capacity of almost 19,000 gallons, this yacht is capable of more than 4,000 nautical miles. In theory, that’s enough for at least a trans-Atlantic crossing.

Whether it’s a long passage or a long weekend, the owner can spend overnights in the main-deck master stateroom. It occupies the full 28-foot-6-inch beam and has full-beam en suite facilities forward that include a bathtub and a shower stall, a vanity desk to port, a dressing area with flanking closets and a fold-down balcony.

Guests aboard Hull No. 1 can stay in what could easily be called a second owners’ stateroom aft on the deck above the master—an optional layout that replaces the standard sky lounge. In the stateroom configuration, this space includes a walk-through dressing area with flanking closets and mirrors, a portside en suite head, a vanity desk and a free-standing seat to starboard. The views from this space are spectacular, given full-height glazing on three sides that, to some degree, will slide open. Glass upper bulwarks on either side also help make the vistas impressive.

The remaining four en suite guest staterooms are on the lower deck. Two have double berths, and two have twins as well as Pullmans.

There is walkaround room outside the upper deck. Inside, a captain’s cabin and ship’s office are abaft the wheelhouse, which also has wide-open views through full-height wraparound vertical windows. The bridge has doors to the port and starboard side decks and wing stations. Up front are double-bunk crew cabins, the crew mess and the yacht’s laundry.

For guests to relax seaside, there is a beach club aft with a teak-clad lower-deck lounge that occupies the full beam abaft the engine room. On the first Oceano 44, this space includes a bar, wraparound Minotti sofas and a day head. Underway, all that is seen around the waterline aft is a narrow swim platform, but at anchor, the stern can be transformed with fold-down surfaces. Part of the transom becomes a swim deck, and “beach lounges” open to the sides, effectively creating a walkaround stern. Tenders and toys are kept in a garage beneath the foredeck with a portside hinge-up door and gantry crane.

Additional guest relaxation areas include the cockpit, which has stand-alone furniture and great views, thanks to an absence of opaque bulwarks and transom structure. Glass panes inset into the aft-deck sole serve as skylights to the beach club below. A foredeck pool has sun pads and chaise longues, creating what the shipyard calls an “island spa.” The pool has glass walls and glazed panels in its base that serve as skylights for the master stateroom en suite below.

Up top, half of the 1,100-square-foot sun deck has hardtop protection. Free-standing furniture from Paola Lenti with upholstery from Mariaflora is here, along with a wet bar and stools. Staircases head down to the upper-deck guest lobby and pantry, aiding circulation for guests and crew. A few discreet doors also let crew move around with minimal impact on guests.

When guests want the sanctuary of ceilings and air conditioning, there’s a conventional main salon. Hull No. 1’s is open plan, with Poltrona Frau sofas and armchairs, and an amidships dining room flanked by full-height sliding-glass doors.

Overmarine Group has considerable experience building semicustom yachts. It has been turning out Mangustas for 40 years, with more than 120 bigger than 100 feet length overall. The Mangusta Oceano 44 continues this tradition of excellence.

Where It’s Made

Northwest Italy-based Overmarine has many production areas in and around Viareggio, Massa and Pisa. Mangusta Oceano 44s are built in Pisa, close to the city’s airport and backed up to a canal that connects to Livorno and the sea. 

In the Works

Owned by the Balducci family, Overmarine has around 20 yachts in progress with an average length of 130 feet across three ranges: full-displacement or fast-displacement  composite and steel aluminum builds, semi-displacement aluminum Gransports, and composite planing Maxi Opens.

The Mangusta Oceano 44 replaces the Oceano 42/43, six of which delivered between 2016 and 2021. Thus far, five of the new model have been sold. One was delivered as Sagas, and four are under construction. The second hull should be delivered this spring, with the next available slot allowing a 2025 handover.

The first three composite Mangusta Oceano 39s are also sold and under construction. The first is due to launch this spring. Two Oceano 50s have been delivered, and another three are in build.

Five Gransport 33s have been delivered, and four are in build. The next available slot is for delivery in 2025.

About Super Yacht MANGUSTA 108: Mangusta 108 superyachts are always in pristine condition and impeccably maintained.  They have a state-of-the-art Bang&Olufsen entertainment systems and flat screen televisions in the main saloon and all cabins.  Master cabin will probably have a useful remote with which you can control both air-con, Hi-Fi and video systems, interacting directly with the main computer on board.  These yachts usually cruise at speeds close to 30kn and will have a maximum speed at well above the cruising speed, sometimes close to 40kn.  One particular model has 2 x 2750hp engines with additional Kamewa WaterJets at 2 x 20Kw Kholer’s which get the yacht to fabulous speeds.

The fuel consumption is as a result likely to be very high, usually around or even above 1000 L / H. The accommodation is usually in 1 master, 1 VIP, 1 Double and 1 twin cabin for up to 8 guests or with an additional Pullman bed, up to 9 guests. 

Accommodation: Mangusta 108 yacht charter boats can usually accommodate a maximum of 9 guests in 4 cabins. Some models may be able to accommodate only 6 guests in 3 en suite double cabins, with an option to create two additional berths thanks to a fold down double bed in a day cabin.  This cabin is well suited to accommodate someone like an au pair/nanny as there may be no facilities for separate cabin.  Such day cabin can also used as a massage room.

Luxury motor yacht charter rates: The MANGUSTA 108’s super yacht charter prices start from 35,000 EUR in low season (excl. July and August) while high season prices are as high as 45 - 65,000 Eur. Daily rates start from 6,000 Eur's in low season, all plus expenses.  In some locations VAT can be charged on top and prices can be higher up to 20% on special days such as NEW YEAR or during special events as local Yacht Show events. BOAT steps aboard Mangusta’s new 32 metre sport yacht, the Mangusta 104 REV Offline , and emerges impressed with the latest interpretation of a long-running success

The Overmarine Group’s latest Maxi Open, the Mangusta 104 REV, is Italian built, Russian designed, inspired by a German car and is finding an eager market in America. Could there be a secret formula behind a yacht that seems to have everyone’s number?

Say “Mangusta Maxi Open” and a slender, curved and dynamic look comes to mind where speed is implied. “The 165 was our iconic fast displacement, all GRP Maxi Open,” says Stefano Arlunno, president of Mangusta’s Americas office. “We launched 13 of them with some adjustments to the model over the years, but after a time we felt that the lines needed to be updated.”

That was when Igor Lobanov got a call. He had recently designed the 110 Oceanco-built yacht Jubilee , the largest yacht built in the Netherlands at that time, and his studio was getting increasing attention. “The first call we got after Jubilee launched was from Mangusta,” Lobanov recalls. “It was a dream come true. Mangusta is one of those boats that I have always looked at and admired.”

Lobanov’s path to yacht design took a roundabout course. After specialising in mathematics at an elite high school for gifted youth and later earning a maths degree at Lomonosov Moscow State University, he then specialised in transportation design at IED Turin European Institute of Design and at Coventry University in the UK. Although his career in yacht design is well established, Lobanov still feels a strong pull towards automotive design.

“As a car designer I see Mangusta lines as having something quite automotive about them, a bit like a Jaguar with a long bonnet and a nice shape, leaping like an animal,” he says. “My task was how to extract the shipyard’s DNA while keeping the key lines and the proportions, the long line fore that becomes shorter and curvier aft. It was like a formula but how and what should we change?”

To solve the problem placed in front of him Lobanov combined his love of cars with his maths skills, and he studied how the lines of the Porsche 911s have varied from the 1960s to the present.

“I found a photo of all these Porsches lined up and shot from the back, so I saw how the proportions changed,” he says. “The hips got wider and the surface details changed more than the actual shape of the cars. One of my strong points, even as a designer, is that I do like analysis. I spend time thinking about why and how we do what we do. So I found a formula for the Mangusta and began to draw transversal sections of particular parts.”

With his formula found and some preliminary sketches in hand, Lobanov and his studio could prepare renderings of a different yet distinctly Mangusta yacht. The first Mangusta 104 REV is penned by Lobanov Design with Igor and his team working on the exterior and Igor’s wife, Yulia, an artist, interior designer and architect, creating the interior. They received the thumbs up after their first visit to the Italian shipyard in Viareggio. “The shipyard trusted us and fully invested in us, building the project on spec,” Lobanov says.

Lobanov Design’s 104 REV keeps the long fore “bonnet” (hood) line and the low-slung superstructure with strongly raked glass that are important elements of Mangusta’s DNA. The sundeck is well integrated and practically unnoticeable. The exterior is undeniably Mangusta yet unmistakably new because true to the lesson learned from studying vintage Porsches, Lobanov used surface details to update the look and make it more fluid. Nowhere is this more evident than in the sides of the hull itself. Here improvements in glass-making technology allowed Lobanov Design to replace a Morse code-like dot and dash of smaller portholes with a continuous jag of black glass that emphasises the hull’s curved lines. Whereas previously the eye had a stop-and-go journey along the yacht, now it takes in the lines in one glance. Thanks to this clean swoop of hull glass and many other details, Lobanov Design’s 104 REV has a look that is fast and fresh.

Broker Brandon Kummer of Kitson Yachts had a hunch that the 104 REV had potential for a client of his who wanted to split time between two of the nicest harbours on the US East Coast, Bal and Sag, without ruling out an occasional quick spin to the Bahamas.  A viewing of the nearly completed yacht led to the sale of the project and a happy owner.

“I was attracted to the beautiful design of the 104 REV and only became more excited when I recognised the functionality of the yacht,” the owner says. Four cabins, a generous main salon, a “wonderful” fly deck and a very comfortable foredeck are just some of the pluses that he mentions. “After enjoying the yacht in the Med this summer I can say  it’s everything I’d hoped for and more,” he says. “The owner didn’t change anything,” Lobanov notes with a point of pride.

A tour of the yacht reveals the kind  of signature Mangusta interior-exterior connection that’s ideal for warm and sunny climates. Symmetrical staircases lead from the beach platform up to the aft deck where a curved couch and a dining table are shaded by the overhang. Doors between the aft deck and the salon fold back so that the single-level space can be lived as one unit with dining and lounging areas both indoors and out. In the salon, a round mirror hangs on a textured leather wall that divides the guest space from the pilothouse while a circular skylight adds extra light to the already luminous space. These two elements establish a theme of circles that is repeated throughout the interior.

Side passages lead to a foredeck lounge with another curved couch, adjustable  tables and sunpads, which can also be shaded by an awning mounted on removable poles. The flybridge is another excellent entertainment area with a comfortable couch and a built-in piece backing the helm seats that can be set up as a grill, sink and fridge or as a bar. The helm station on the fly is an ideal spot for enjoying the sense of freedom that driving this yacht brings.

After the sun and fun of the outdoor spaces the mood on the lower deck, where the four guest cabins are located, is almost sultry. The color palette is dominated by dark grays and rust tones. Materials with naturally occurring yet strongly contrasting grains are used lavishly. Stone is sculpted, wood is polished, and the circular motif crops up in lighting fixtures and mirrors. The full beam owners’ cabin is amidships, in the most comfortable area of the yacht. Luxurious materials such as the shagreen that lines the wall behind the headboard give a plush strength to the decor. The VIP cabin, in the forward area, is also full width. Additional guest cabins include a double and a twin cabin with a Pullman berth. Crew accommodation for four in two cabins is located between the owners’ cabin and the engine room and has separate access via a dedicated port side staircase.

While the Mangusta 104 REV is an eyeful in the best possible way, the feature that probably contributes most to its international popularity is out of sight, below the waterline. The 104 REV shares naval architecture, designed in house by the Overmarine Group’s own team, with the 165 REV . The hull shape has been optimised for twin MTU 16V 2000 engines and two Kamewa S63-4 waterjets, a combination that lets this yacht cruise in shallower waters – and quickly too.

“At 32-metres, a top speed of 35 knots and with less than 1.5 metres of draft, it’s ideal for Florida and Bahamas cruising,” says the owner of hull No 1, dubbed Offline .

The owner of hull No 2, also an American, must have been thinking along the same lines. Are low draft and water-jet propulsion the keys to Mangusta’s success in America these days? “Maybe partly,” Arlunno says. “But our American clients also appreciate that we have an office in Miami Beach and that, at the end of the day, we’re a family-run business that’s quick on its feet.”

The sweetest driver and the most amazing relaxing time. We didn't have to worry about anything. Really throughly enjoyed our time. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.

We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!

I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. I copied part of the message he sent me for the quote I asked for: "The following land yacht is available for your 6 hour (5:45p-11:45p) event on the date you've requested.  30-36 passenger - $1,695.00 Our prices INCLUDE ALL FEES AND CHAUFFEUR'S GRATUITY, as well as complimentary ice and bottled water." I had 32 people on my bus and we all had enough space! The water was definitely awesome for the end of the night but Mark was so responsible and got us to SF city hall on time and safely. He was so quick at replying to my messages and I have had looked into many other places and this was the most accommodating and reasonably priced. Highly recommend !!

Our group had an amazing time! Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because the other photos on here don't do it justice. There's also a TV that you can stream to. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future.

First class experience from pickup, journey, to drop off. Our chauffeur Kelvin provided us with a safe and wonderful experience to make for a good time. Will definitely be hiring this company for future corporate events and celebrations. Keep up your good work. Thank you.

I had my 40th birthday bash and Mark was amazing. Bus was very clean and roomy with a bathroom which was a plus. Hands down, book with Pacific Land Yachts if you are looking for a party bus. Would definitely do business again!

I rented a bus for my brothers 30th birthday and it was an unforgettable night! The bus was in great condition and so much bigger than I imagined. It even had a restroom which was helpful because we had it reserved for 5 hours. The driver was fantastic and let us blast our music and dance the whole time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good time!!

Mark is pretty darn awesome! We chartered his land yacht for a work event. Everyone had an amazing time, and everyone said that they would definitely want to work with Mark again for both future and personal events that require group transportation. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!

Great driver. Smooth sailing for a large group of 30+! Very nice clean bus (with a bathroom!!) We had such a great time. I can't wait to do it again.
