DON'T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

Bronwyn gilchrist, head of service , candidate.

Saltwater Recruitment helped me find my dream job. From the start of my search right up to my placement, they have been attentively and genuinely involved in finding the best fit for me. Within a short amount of time Saltwater presented me three matching vacancies; facilitated in interviews and guided me with the best professional advice. I am now one happily employed yachtie! I absolutely love my job and am forever grateful!

JARED MARTIN

Captain/chief officer , client of 60-90m yachts.

It’s been two over years of working with the Saltwater Recruitment team and we have been very happy with the level of professionalism and attention we receive when looking for a candidate to join us. 99% of the candidates that Saltwater have presented to us have been a perfect match for us, and when we had a candidate that did not work out, we were given an automatic replacement immediately, no questions asked. This is the kind of service we expect in the industry and Saltwater can supply this.

CHIEF OFFICER , 90M+

It has been a pleasure working with Saltwater. For every potential candidate they send, it is accompanied by a very useful paragraph that not only summarises the their CV, but includes information on reference checks, why they are suitable and any other points of note. Written references are verified verbally too. Saltwater is very proactive with their search for the right candidates.

STEPHANIE DURKAN

Chief stew/purser , various motor yachts.

Saltwater is a top agency for all levels of recruitment needs. I have worked with Saltwater on both sides of recruitment - to find crew to join my team and also over the years to find the best jobs which match my needs. The team are so personable, experienced and professional from start to finish of any recruitment process. I highly recommend.

Mega Yacht Crewing Jobs

CruiseJobFinder also specializes in helping people find great yacht crew jobs on privately owned sailboats and luxury yachts. This can range from a 50-foot sailboat sailing through the Mediterranean to a mega yacht, owned by one of the world's richest individuals, which is sailing all over the globe. These types of jobs are a great alternative to working on a cruise ship and offer a truly unique experience.

Working Aboard a Luxury Yacht: An Overview

Imagine your days full of work where you will meet people from all over the world, travel to exotic destinations, eat gourmet meals with a private chef and feel the breeze of the ocean air right in your office. Seems a little far fetched right?

Yacht crewing photo

Charter yachts take guests on a single or multi-day trip for a fee. Some of these yachts may be commercially owned by a large corporation while others are owned by private individuals who commonly act as captain.

What about mega yachts such as those owned by Saudi princes and the billionaires of the world like Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, and famous golfer Tiger Woods? Mega Yachts, luxury yachts and superyachts are all yachts that are 78 feet or more. These vessels can cost from one million U.S. dollars or more.

Finally, smaller yachts are much more affordable than they once were and more captains are buying their own yacht and pushing off anchor to explore the world on their own terms.

No matter the size of the vessel a crew is necessary.

Start your search for your Dream Job Today!

Unlike the busy cruise lines, working on private yachts offers an opportunity to work with a small amount of guests and co workers. The intimate setting paints a pretty picture enabling crew members to bond closely with their fellow crew members, employers and guests that make take passage upon the yacht they work for.

Yachting etiquette must be portrayed and a sense of adventure is a must!

European / Mediterranean Superyacht Season

Europe and more specifically, the Mediterranean is the most populated sea in the yachting world and is busiest during the summer months (April – September). The Mediterranean Sea is the body of water that separates Europe, Africa and Asia and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow passage called the Straits of Gibraltar. The Med has amazing infrastructure, shipyards, marinas and yachting services and is therefore also a very popular place for yachts and crew to remain during winter months.

Finding a Superyacht Job in Europe / The Med:

The best time of the year to find a job is either side of the season, directly before or immediately after. Boats generally tend to crew up for the Mediterranean season in April and May and they may then hire crew again before crossing to their next seasonal destination, the most popular of which, is the Caribbean and usually occurs in September-November. Many vessels will base themselves in the south of France, Italy and Spain. Antibes and Palma de Mallorca are therefore the most common places for crew to base themselves and find jobs.

Cruising in the Med:

The Med is mostly surrounded by land which is one of the many factors that make it an ideal cruising area for yachts. It is generally well-protected, is non-tidal and boasts crystal clear water and some of the best beaches in the world. Additionally, Europe is rich in culture and a Mediterranean season will involve stopping off at some of the greatest cities in the world. As a crew member, time off will be limited in the summer months, however, you are likely to be fortunate enough to briefly experience a few of the amazing cities and attractions that Europe has to offer. Whether its partying in Ibiza, exploring the French Riviera, enjoying a beach bar in Greece or wandering the streets of Turkey and Croatia, you are sure to have an amazing time with any downtime you may get in Europe.

As a crew member, the job varies slightly in the Med compared to other seasonal destinations. In the summer months Europe experiences long hours of daylight and the sun can set as late as 21h30. Guests therefore (generally) tend to be slower in the morning and to go to bed later. It is also common to spend many nights in port as guests want to experience the vibrant cultures, cities and ports and often eat ashore. The type of guests you have onboard in Europe may also vary, unlike areas such as the Caribbean, South Pacific, etc. where guests are most likely on board to get away from other yachts and enjoy nature and activities like diving, snorkelling and fishing. The Mediterranean lacks marine life and is densely populated with yachts. The guests tend to prefer a higher level of service here and the deck crew can expect countless tender runs to and from shore.

Winter Months:

The med season begins to slow down in September. Many yacht crew members are hired on a seasonal basis and their employment contracts will come to an end. Others will prepare to take the vessel to their next seasonal destination and some may remain on board the yacht for a winter yard (maintenance) period. There is a lot of crew turnover during this stage of the year and is a good time to find employment.

If you are employed on a yacht that remains in Europe for the winter, your work will vary greatly from the summer months. There is a good chance the boat will be hauled out the water onto the dry dock at some stage as well (possibly for the whole period, depending on the scope of work to be done). It is highly unlikely you will have guests on board and everything will be covered and stowed away for the winter months. The yacht will undergo maintenance and alterations during this period. It is a very busy time for engineers who will focus on scheduled maintenance, repairing breakages and faults that may have occurred during the season, and making improvements to onboard machinery and systems. The deck department will focus on maintenance (varnishing, polishing, painting) as well as inventory and season orders. The interior will focus on inventories, stain treatments, ordering, polishing and deep cleaning.

The off-season is also a good time to train and rest crew. It is likely that hours will be 08:00 – 17:00 and that you will have weekends off, provided you are not on watch. The winter months can be an amazing experience for crew members if you enjoy the colder, wetter weather. There tends to be a more relaxed atmosphere on board with ‘normal’ work hours in place and more downtime. Having weekends off allows you to explore the area you are in, or even possibly take a few days off for a skiing trip. It will also provide deck and engine room crew members with invaluable yard experience, which will stand them in good stead for their careers.

Visas and Legal Requirements:

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality and role on board. Schengen visas are necessary for all non-European and non-British crew. It can be obtained from the embassy of your first point of entry into Europe and allows you to move freely between all the European countries that form part of the Schengen area. However, the amount of days you are allowed in the Schengen area varies depending on your nationality, contract, yacht policies etc.

It is common for Schengen visa holders to be stamped onto the vessel and out of the Schengen zone to freeze their allocation of days in Europe. In this instance crew will not be allowed to leave the area in which the yacht is located. It is therefore essential to ensure that you consult with your captain/yacht agent or visa specialists to ensure you have the correct visas, are working legally and know your restrictions.

Elevated experiences: 2024 global trends in luxury travel and hospitality.

An airplane approaches a tropical paradise island in the Maldives.

The global luxury travel market, worth an estimated $1.5 trillion , continues to accelerate as well as diversify after an initial post-pandemic lift. Travel demand and spending, fueled by a near-insatiable curiosity for novel experiences, is expected to increase in 2024 , reports Virtuoso , a global network of luxury and experiential travel agencies and advisors.

Wealthy travelers, however, are not all alike. Although some high-net-worth individuals might spring for a $10K champagne bubble bath at Florence’s Il Salviatino hotel , others might choose to soak in Esalen Institute’ s hot spring baths perched on California’s Big Sur coast.

Still, the moneyed traveler is usually discerning.

“Our traveler is very much the tastemaker, the trendsetter amongst their peers,” says Shannon Knapp , president and CEO of Leading Hotels of the World (LHW), a collection of more than 400 five-star independent luxury hotels in more than 80 countries. “They’re constantly looking for what’s next. They’re taking more trips than ever, they’re spending more than ever, and they’re staying in larger rooms.”

Emerging Destinations Lure the Luxury Traveler

After a post-pandemic return to such favored spots as Italy, France and Greece, wealthy travelers are putting new pins on the map and venturing to Japan, Croatia, Iceland, Portugal and Antarctica, according to Virtuoso .

Saudi Arabia is also a contender, given its $800-billion tourism moonshot , part of a Vision 2030 government program that aims to reimagine an economy historically dependent on oil. Among numerous projects in development: Sindalah , a luxury island for yacht enthusiasts with three prestige resorts, and the fantasy city of Qiddiya , with a focus on entertainment, sports and culture that’s rising from the sands much as Las Vegas did.

To The Moon Elon Musk s Dramatic Return To Crypto Falls Flat As Sudden Price Crash Spooks Bitcoin Ethereum XRP Solana And Dogecoin Traders

Apple suddenly unveils new details that will change the iphone forever, 5 high-paying remote jobs that pay up to $300,000 in 2024.

Saudi Arabia has invested more than $800 billion to overhaul its tourism industry.

Iceland, far from the searing desert, also presents a significant opportunity for the luxury market, Knapp says. “The idea of luxury continues to evolve conceptually there. More and more luxury travelers are keen to experience the country’s raw natural beauty.”

Kyoto, a former imperial capital of Japan, is also attracting luxury travelers drawn to its culture and traditions. LHW’s collection includes Fauchon Hotel Kyoto , adjacent to the city’s vibrant Shijō Kawaramachi district, and it will soon add another.

Exclusive Access to Authentic Experiences

Eighty percent of the hotels in LHW’s portfolio are family led and more than 90% are independent. The world’s largest collection of such properties was founded by hoteliers for hoteliers in 1928.

Its storied hotels, many of which have been owned by multiple generations, point to another trend among elite travelers: the craving for unique experiences authentic to the destination.

“Destinations have evolved around these family-owned hotels,” Knapp says. “The owners have relationships with the artisans and shopkeepers that run deep.”

Knapp cites a recent trip to Italy with friends that began with a jaunt on vintage Vespa scooters arranged by the proprietor of Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi. They headed to the popular Concettina ai Tre Santi pizzeria in Naples, but it was closed for a holiday. The hotel’s proprietor, however, knew the chef, Ciro Oliva , whose family has run the pizzeria for more than 60 years .

“Ciro came down with his pizza chef, opened the restaurant, and prepared a tasting menu of five pizzas paired with champagne,” Knapp says. “It was an extraordinary experience.”

Having an authentic experience, such as a vintage Vespa ride around Italy, is a big part of today's ... [+] luxury travel mindset.

A hotel’s architecture and interior design are integral to authentic experiences. The tile work at LHW’s Le Sirenuse in Positano, Italy, for example, has a storied history. The father-and-son firm of Fornace De Martino creates the tiles; their family enterprise has been firing kilns for more than six centuries.

A venerable Florence property, the Place Firenze , has gone a step further, establishing the Place of Wonders Foundation to “protect, preserve, and promote the human heritage of Italian craft.” The foundation funds scholarships for Italian artisans and offers hotel guests curated visits to local workshops to view creations in glass, gold, porcelain, cashmere and scagliola, a decorative technique that mimics marble.

Brands Team Up to Deliver Singular Journeys

Cross-brand alliances are another luxury trend, what the professional services firm Deloitte describes as “ collaboration across the luxury brand ecosystem. ” Notably, Accor Hotels has teamed with the SNCF Group (France’s railway company), owner of the legendary Orient Express brand. Three Accor hotels are being developed under the brand, which will also offer private journeys in restored Orient Express cars as well as on a branded sailing ship.

When properties strike up partnerships with local charities, such cross-brand alliances can create truly transformational experiences for guests.

Outside the Hotel Royal Mansour in Marrakech, Morocco.

Jean-Claude Messant, managing director at Morocco’s Royal Mansour Marrakech , has partnered with the Fiers & Forts Center , a local refuge for orphaned, disadvantaged and abandoned children. If they wish, hotel guests can make a donation or volunteer with the organization.

Leaving a destination better than they found it is “a big, big trend among luxury travelers,” Knapp says. “People want to come back home feeling better than when they left.” Unlike other packaged charity experiences, guests’ involvement with Fiers & Forts feels authentic, Knapp adds. “You can be a part of changing the lives of these kids.”

The Hallmarks of Slow Travel

Along with transformational experiences, slower, more focused travel is having a moment. That includes unhurried transportation, reports Deloitte , on trains, luxury yachts and smaller vessels, all paired with longer vacations. The global yacht charter market is expected to surge at a compound annual growth rate of 22.8% through 2027, reaching a value of $25.5 billion, according to Deloitte .

“People are traveling both slower and deeper,” Knapp says. African safaris excel at shifting perceptions about time and how it's spent, whether it’s a meerkat immersion experience at the edge of the Kalahari or encounters with decidedly chill Angolan colobus monkeys in western Rwanda.

Slower travel options such as traveling by train allows for a more immersive experience.

Wellness is a part of slower travel, and vacationers are willing to pay extra for high-class amenities. Although destination spas and retreats such as Canyon Ranch and Six Senses are popular, “it’s no longer exclusively about how big your spa is and how many massages you can offer,” Knapp says. “It’s about how you’re enabling guests to personalize their wellness experience. It’s about the programming and how deep and intense you want to go.”

Offerings that go beyond aromatherapy and hot stone massages include art therapy, Knapp says, and “wellness butlers” who can recommend tailored cuisine and spa treatments based on a full-body assessment.

Sustainability Includes Local Values

Sustainability continues to be a buzzword luxury travelers search for when choosing properties. LHW includes a Sustainability Leaders Collection of 78 certified properties that range from sleek urban towers to tented rainforest retreats.

Hotels that incorporate sustainability into building design and operations attract more eco-conscious luxury travelers— 74% of whom are willing to pay extra to travel more responsibly. And sustainability increasingly means safeguarding a destination’s cultural heritage, traditions and values.

Hyper-Personalized Luxury Travel

The ability to hyper-personalize luxury travel has reached new levels because technology can track and manage guest preferences. “In the past, you had a world-class GM with a great Rolodex filled with everything about guests,” Knapp says. “Now, the depth of personalization is far greater.”

The trend includes luxury travel advisors who, like traditional travel agents, shoulder the time-consuming task of assembling and booking itineraries. The advisors are favored by 85% of luxury travelers, according to Deloitte .

Demand for luxury travel advisors offering white glove service is on the rise among global ... [+] travelers.

Velocity Black , described by the Wall Street Journal as a “turbocharged concierge service,” offers “bespoke bucket-list itineraries” using an exclusive membership app. Virtuoso, in contrast, touts its advisors who possess in-depth knowledge of such diverse places as Afghanistan and Tonga.

The ability to choose a cutting-edge app or an actual human advisor is the hallmark of luxury travel, Knapp says.

“Luxury is truly personal,” she says. “What’s luxury to me is not necessarily luxury for you. You can’t paint the luxury traveler with a single brush. But they are often intellectually curious, and they want to be challenged. And they’re out exploring, contributing and experiencing.”

Budapest’s Gellért Baths

We found a swimming pool in every city on our Interrail trip around Europe

Swimming at every stop left us fresh and invigorated – and led us to parts of cities that tourists seldom visit

S tepping into the lobby of the Gellért Baths in Budapest is like stepping back in time. Having resisted the temptation to look at photos of the baths online, I was thrilled at my first sight of the spectacular art nouveau interior. After changing, my husband and I did a few laps of the main indoor pool, admiring the intricately decorated columns surrounding us. Afterwards, we explored the building’s labyrinth of geothermal pools before emerging on to the enormous roof terrace. There, we swam in the heated outdoor pool under bright sunshine.

Less touristy than the more party-style Széchenyi Baths , the Gellért offered us the chance of a decent swim and steam.

Visiting a thermal spa in Budapest is a must, but this wasn’t the first dip on our Interrail trip around Europe last spring. Lured by the offer of a discount on an Interrail Global Pass , we found time to travel across mainland Europe by rail – 30 years since I last Interrailed in my 20s – with little in mind but sightseeing, eating and drinking.

The terrace cafe at Ljubljana’s Museum of Modern Art

We had loosely planned a clockwise route, starting on the Eurostar from London to Brussels and returning via Paris two months later. Staying in mid-price hotels and hostels, we took whirlwind tours of Bruges, Brussels, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Berlin and Kraków, trying an endless stream of cafes, bars and restaurants.

But less than two weeks into our trip, when we arrived in the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, we found that our experiences were already blurring into one. What’s more, despite walking a good number of steps each day, we were feeling the effects of the freedom to overindulge and missing the routine of our regular swims back home.

So, deciding it was time to take action, we hit on the idea of seeking out a swim wherever we stopped. We Googled swimming pools and set off across the city on foot, eventually arriving at Plaváreň Pasienky . Once inside the facility’s largely deserted building, we wandered up and down staircases and along quiet corridors until we spotted a sign telling us that the entrance to the pool was “through the wardrobes”. We located our respective changing rooms and found an attendant selling tickets.

Our journey through the wardrobes then led us to a 50-metre pool – the largest in Bratislava – with just a handful of swimmers bobbing along the lanes. Though the pool was a little run down (and would soon be refurbished, to reopen this spring), we emerged feeling invigorated and ready for the next leg of our journey.

Besides the obvious physical benefits, our swimming expeditions also took us to parts of cities we might otherwise have missed.

Plage de la Gravette in Antibes

On our way to Plaváreň Pasienky, we chanced upon the giant Slovak Radio Building, shaped like an upside-down pyramid. After our swim, we travelled back to the old town by trolleybus, missed our stop and ended up at the parliament building, where we dined at a restaurant overlooking the Danube.

In Budapest, our visit to the Gellért Baths had led us across the Danube from Pest to Buda via the magnificent Liberty Bridge and given us glorious views over Gellért Hill.

As we journeyed across Europe, we became obsessed with comparing swimming pool prices and facilities, embraced the array of wristbands and tokens for lockers and hairdryers, learned that most pools insisted on flip-flops and a swimming cap, and came to accept the lack of information online about opening times.

In Austria, during our stay in the south-eastern city of Graz, we swam at  Bad zur Sonne , a pristine stainless steel-bottomed pool where the efforts of swimmers contrasted starkly with spectators enjoying an early morning beer. Later, our swim provided a conversation opener with locals, who told us how, before the building was renovated, it had been the scene of an arts event, with bands using the drained pool as a stage and artists setting up their wares in the cubicles.

A rainy day in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, led us to the 10-lane Kopališče Tivoli in Tivoli Park where, after our swim, we ate delicious savoury waffles in the pool’s Vafljivaflji cafe and drank fresh orange-and-mint tea. Our exit through the park led us to an outdoor photographic exhibition, an ornate Serbian Orthodox church and the Museum of Modern Art, with its fabulously stylish cocktail bar.

In Trieste, we walked the width of the port to the enormous Centro Federale, run by the Italian Swimming Federation. After a patient receptionist helped us register online, we made our way around the building to Piscina Bruno Bianchi . We were about to jump into an empty Olympic-size pool when we spotted the teams of swimmers arriving for their competition and noticed a smaller pool at the back for public swimming. With its six lanes and diving “pit”, the 25-metre pool was still an impressive facility.

The walk back to our Airbnb led us along the tree-lined Passeggio Sant’Andrea, where we stumbled on the Ariston cinema and watched an Irish arthouse film.

In Vicenza, we were sure we’d taken a wrong turn when we arrived at a building milling with teenagers, but a helpful student directed us across the school car park to Piscina Patronato Leone XIII . The facilities were basic but the pool was clean and orderly, thanks to an officious attendant who made sure everyone showered before getting in the water, and swam in the right direction.

In Pistoia, an underpass led us to a quiet residential area and, down a side street, to the grandly named Acquarama .

“Do you know the Olympic pool in London?” asked the receptionist, surprised to see tourists. We nodded eagerly.

“Well, this is nothing like that!” he laughed. When we saw the narrow pool with its faded tiles, we understood why he wanted to manage our expectations, but with only one lane already occupied we enjoyed another refreshing swim.

As we took the train along the Italian Riviera towards France and the weather got warmer, our swims moved outdoors, but we continued to look for modest locations.

On a fine day in Sanremo, we slipped on to the beach of Bagni Paradiso , where the rocky groynes and rows of changing cabins created the calm of a lido. As it was still slightly off-season, the only other visitors were inside the beach restaurant – guests at an Italian family lunch.

In Antibes we loved the unpolished feel of Plage de la Gravette – the horseshoe-shaped public beach behind the ramparts of the old town, made all the more entertaining by seasonal workers from the luxury yachts in the harbour, who shared stories as they swam in the sea.

In Bordeaux we took the tramway to Les Aubiers and serene Plage du Lac . We clocked up lengths while ducks swam around us and boats sailed by in the distance, rested afterwards under tall trees, watching teenagers playing table tennis – and felt we’d been fully immersed in local culture.
