Lil Yachty opens up about his co-writing credit on City Girls' breakout hit "Act Up" in a new interview with Kerwin Frost, saying that he "wrote the whole song" with the exception of JT's last verse. "One day I was in the studio with my best friend Earl and he played the beat and said 'write something for City Girls' and I was like 'okay.' And I just did it," he says.

Yachty is credited on the track alongside EarlThePearl and JT. "[People] said 'he might have said one thing in the studio and they credit him.' I wrote the whole song, except J.T.'s last verse," Yachty continues, "I know them personally, and I know what women like to hear. What's some like, raunchy shit? I just started saying it, and before I went in the booth I said 'no homo, y'all" because all my boys was in the room."

City Girls returned to provide a twerk-filled visual for their Girl Code  anthem “Act Up” on Thursday (May 30). The EarlThePearll-produced ratchet banger has called the Hot 100 home for the past three months, where it currently sits at No. 34.

Fellow Quality Control artist Lil Yachty lent a helping hand in the role of a reporter explaining how the #ActUpChallenge, which is swarming social media, actually shut down spring break in Miami. He later even gives suggestions to Yung Miami as to how he would say certain lyrics, playing off of the circus made about him actually penning most of the record.

Lil Boat shared the bombshell revelation in April during an interview with Kerwin Frost. “When it came out, people was so shocked and they didn’t believe it,” Yachty said. “I wrote the whole song except for J.T.’s last verse, but everything that everyone is singing and all, I wrote the whole thing.”

City Girls Member JT Begins Serving Jail Sentence for Fraud Charges

JT was noticeably absent from the visual, as she continues to serve her jail sentence on felony fraud charges in Tallahassee. The 27-year-old rapper was denied an early release from prison, according to  The Blast earlier this month. Her case was reportedly referred to the Bureau of Prisons. Court docs viewed by Billboard say that JT, born Jatavia Johnson, is slated to be released during March of 2020.

Jay-Z told us that for the right price a ghostwriter could make anything sound tighter. Now, Lil Yachty has become the living embodiment of this bar as he claims his writing skills secured him a massive bag.

It's become common knowledge that Lil Yachty wrote one of the City Girls ' breakout singles, "Act Up." Instead of applauding the rapper for his versatility, one fan decided to troll Yachty for his hand in making a hit record. This moved the rapper to floss on the "civilian" by explaining how fruitful the song has been.

"That was an eight-figure check and it's still coming—I'm sorry. 7," Lil Yachty said while getting his hair braided on Live. "Let me talk to whoever that civilian was on the last insert. These niggas be so closed-minded, right? And these niggas ain't never seen no real money, right?"

In April 2019, Yachty revealed that he wrote the song for his fellow QC labelmates. Yachty explained to Kerwin Frost that producer, EarlThePearl, played the beat for him and told him to create something for the City Girls.

"[People] said 'he might have said one thing in the studio and they credit him.' I wrote the whole song, except J.T.'s last verse," Yachty said to Frost. "I know them personally, and I know what women like to hear. What's some like, raunchy shit? Lil Yachty Reveals He Wrote City Girls' 'Act Up'

Lil Yachty is flexing his pen game.

The Quality Control rapper reveals that he wrote the majority of City Girls’ hit song “Act Up.” During an interview with Kerwin Frost (via XXL ), Yachty said that he penned most of the EarlThePearll-produced track aside from J.T.’s final verse.

“When it came out, [people] was so shocked and they didn’t believe it,” he said. “I wrote the whole song except for J.T.’s last verse, but everything that everyone is singing and all, I wrote the whole thing.”

Yachty is listed as one of three writers, along with EarlThePearll and Jatavia “J.T.” Johnson, on the standout track off the duo’s November album Girl Code .

Yachty, who is signed to Quality Control along with City Girls, went on to explain his writing process. “I just thought like them,” added Yachty. “I know them personally and I know what women like to hear. I was like, ‘What’s just some raunchy shit?’ So before I went in the booth, I said, ‘No homo y’all.’ All my boys was in the room. And I started saying crazy shit. But I came out and I was like, ‘Y’all watch, this is about to blow up.'”

“Act Up” continues to blow up the charts. It currently sits at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Lil Yachty Recalls Writing A Hit For City Girls On New Track "A Cold Sunday"

According to Lil Yachty, he made seven figures off of the song.

2023 Austin City Limits Music Festival - Weekend One

Lil Yachty recently unveiled his new track "A Cold Sunday" to kick off yet another year of successful releases. So far, listeners are loving the song, praising the Georgia-born performer for his lyrical prowess. The jazzy single also sees Lil Yachty revisit writing a hit for City Girls, the 2018 Girl Code cut "Act Up."

“She a City Girl, I’m the real reason that she ‘Act Up,'” he reminisces on the song. This is far from the first time Lil Yachty has boasted about writing the fan-favorite, however. According to him, he made a killing off of the raunchy track, which is why he's remained unfazed by criticism. “That was an eight-figure check, no cap, and it’s still coming!” he told fans on Instagram Live in 2020. “Seven, I’m sorry. Seven. Look, let me talk to whoever that civilian was on the last insert, whoever that nice civilian was. These n***as be so closed-minded, right? And these n***as ain’t never seen no real money, right?”

Back in 2019, he also detailed how the song came to life in an interview with The Fader . According to him, he had to get out of his comfort zone to come up with some of the lyrics, which ultimately proved to be successful. “One day I was in the studio with my best friend Earl and he played the beat and said, ‘Write something for City Girls,’ and I was like, ‘Okay.’ And I just did it,” he described.

“I know them personally, and I know what women like to hear. What’s some, like, raunchy sh*t? I just started saying it, and before I went in the booth I said, ‘No homo, y’all’ because all my boys was in the room... Lil Yachty Reveals He Wrote Yung Miami’s Verses in City Girls’ ‘Act Up’

Mail

Lil Yachty pretty much claimed to write the City Girls’ smash hit, “Act Up” in its entirety.

In an interview with Kerwin Frost, the Teenage Emotions rapper set the record straight about how much he contributed to the song because people assumed he was credited with only a couple lines. According to this interview, the only part he didn’t write was JT’s last verse. This could be true because JT does have writing credits on the song alongside her label mate and Isaac Earl Bynum.

“He may have said like one thing in the studio and they credit him,” Yachty said. “I wrote the whole song except for JT’s last verse. But everything that everyone is singing and all. I wrote the whole thing.”

City Girls Refuse to Answer How Much Lil Yachty Contributed to ‘Act Up’ in Interview – Watch

About three years ago, City Girls dropped their Billboard Hot 100-charting single, "Act Up." The following year, it was revealed that their  Quality Control Music  label mate  Lil Yachty  penned part of the track for them. Fast-forward to 2021, and Yung Miami of the South Florida-bred rap duo prefers not to speak about Yachty's contribution to her group's song.

During an appearance on Real 92.3's Home Grown Radio on Tuesday (July 6), Yung Miami and JT were asked about Lil Boat penning their 2018 hit record. To this question, Miami replies, "Next," while JT  giggles.

It's unclear why Yung Miami chose not to speak on Lil Yachty writing a majority of "Act Up."  However, the songwriter credits currently are Issac Bynum (producer Earl on the Beat)—who also produced the record—Caresha Brownlee (Yung Miami), Jatavia Johnson ( JT ) and Miles Parks McCollum (Lil Yachty).

Yachty's 2019 interview with Kerwin Frost is when the rapper first spoke in-depth about penning the song for the two ladies, with the exception of a portion of JT's verse.

"One day, I was in the studio with my best friend Earl and he played the beat," Yachty explained. "And he was like, 'Write something for the City Girls .' And I was like, 'OK.' And I just did it."

He expressed how shocked people were when they realized he wrote the track. "And when it came out... And [people were] so shocked," Yachty explained. "They didn't believe it. And they started looking it up and they were like, 'Well, it says...' It had my real name, Miles McCollum. It said Miles McCollum, Jatavia Johnson, which is JT, then it said Issac Bynum, which is Earl. So maybe, he did... You know how Kanye has like, 12 writers. He may have said one thing in the studio and they credited him. But I wrote the whole song, except for JT's last verse. But everything that everyone is singing... I wrote the whole thing."

On how Yachty was able to write a song so fitting for his bossed-up, unapologetic colleagues, he said, "I just thought like them. I know them personally and I know what women like to hear. I was literally sitting there like, 'Yo, what's just some raunchy shit?' So I just started saying it and then I went in the booth."

Scroll down to see JT and Yung Miami speak on "Act Up" at the 24:55-mark.

How Lil Yachty Got His Second Act

By Jeff Ihaza

Until the pandemic, Lil Yachty never stopped to think about how quickly he became famous. “It was a full year from walking across the stage in high school to then I’m in this penthouse in midtown Atlanta , I got this G-wagon, put my mother in a house,” Yachty explains. “It’s a fast life. You not ever getting the chance to think about a lot of shit.”

Yachty’s 2016 hit “Minnesota,” which had the treacly energy of a nursery rhyme, earned the then-17-year-old the title “King of the Teens.” But since then, he’s become an elder statesman of a certain brand of young superstar — and something like the Gen Z answer to Diddy. He collaborated with brands like Nautica and Target; he appeared in the movie How High 2 ; he signed an endorsement deal with Sprite. Signees to his new label imprint, Concrete Boys, even get an iced-out chain.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Born Miles Parks McCollum, Yachty embodies many of the ways the music industry has changed in the past decade. He rose to fame on the internet and commands attention with or without new music. Over Zoom in March, he’s calm and reserved, pausing intently before he responds to questions. The youthful exuberance is still there, though. At one point, his mom, who lives nearby, calls to ask what he wants from the grocery store. “I need Pop-Tarts,” he says sweetly. “I really want them cinnamon-bun Pop-Tarts.”

He can afford lots of Pop-Tarts. Yachty reportedly made $13 million on endorsements in 2016 and 2017. (“Work hard, play hard,” he responds when asked about the number.) He spends more than $50,000 a month on various expenses, according to one recent headline. (“If anything I pay a little more. I have many assets and insurance, plus an elaborate payroll.”) He’s working on a Reese’s Puffs cereal collaboration, a film based on the card game Uno, and he was one of the first rappers to hop on the crypto craze, selling something called a “YachtyCoin” last December in an auction on the platform Nifty Gateway. According to a report from Coinbase, the token sold for $16,050. Yachty explains that when he was first discovered by Quality Control records founder Kevin “Coach K” Lee, “one of the biggest things he talked about was being a brand. Being bigger than just an artist — being a mogul.”

In fact, collaboration has come to be a useful tool for Yachty as he sheds the King of the Teens title for something more akin to a rap mogul. “I only work with people I have friendships with, who I really admire,” Yachty says. “And I love working with newer artists, up-and-coming artists.”  Within the world of hip-hop, Yachty has found for himself somewhere between a megastar and internet hero, and it would appear that he’s just settling in. “I just fuck with new talent. Not even like, ‘let me sign you, get under my wing,’ ” he explains. “Just ‘hey, I’ve been in this spot before. I know what that’s like, bada bing, bada boom.’ ”

Yachty started Concrete Boys last year. One of the first signees was his childhood friend Draft Day, who offers one of the more exciting features on Lil Boat 3, on the cut “Demon Time.” “I feel old sometimes,” Yachty admits. “I feel old as fuck when someone’s popping and I don’t know who they are. Which is rare, because I be on my shit.”

Yachty is also at the forefront of a new realm of social platforms, namely Twitch and Discord, that engender more direct communication within communities. Yachty frequently talks directly to fans on both platforms, and in April he collaborated with Discord on “sound packs,” which allowed users to replace the app’s normal notifications with sounds he created.

His enduring celebrity is proof of what’s possible with a solid flow and internet savvy. “I just want to do everything. Because I’ve realized I can,” Yachty explains. “I’ve learned the power I have. Reserved seats also go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. Prices have yet to be announced, but tickets will include Summerfest general admission June 29. Additional seating will be available for the show on a first-come, first-served basis for Summerfest general-admission ticketholders.

Seven other BMO Pavilion concerts have already been announced for the Big Gig: Brittany Howard with The War & Treaty (June 20), Goo Goo Dolls (June 22), Muna (June 27), REO Speedwagon (June 28), Mt. Joy (July 4), Bryson Tiller (July 5) and Ivan Cornejo (July 6).

The nearly full headliner lineup is expected to be released this month.
