Fishers Island Club Review

Graylyn Loomis July 24, 2013 Course Reviews 5 Comments

Fishers Island is located just off the coast of Connecticut, but it is technically located in New York. The island serves as a summer getaway for the upper tier of society. It is a place of understated wealth, the “anti-Hamptons.” You do not see any overt statements of wealth on Fishers. Most of the families who spend summers on the island have been doing so for multiple generations. Fishers Island Club, or the “Big Club,” as it is colloquially known on the island, is one of the most exclusive clubs in the States. Its golf course is ranked #28 in GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 in the World list. A beach club and yacht club also serve as entertainment for those fortunate enough to be members.

The simplest way to access the island is via ferry from New London, Connecticut. Anyone can go to Fishers Island; however, one half of the island, the side containing Fishers Island Club and Hay Harbor Club, is private.

I was fortunate enough to spend four days on the island. In addition to golfing while on the island, I participated in a sailing race with the Fishers Island Yacht Club and my host, a world champion sailor and winner of the America’s Cup. A traditional Thursday night formal dinner at the Big Club, along with parties, meals, and many introductions, created a unique insight into an exclusive enclave that many will never see.

Now for the golf: Fishers Island Club is a Seth Raynor design and was opened in 1926. Many of the holes on the course are modeled off of famous hole designs. Of all the courses I have played in the US, Fishers played most similarly to a Scottish links course. Dry conditions allowed for low running shots. I loved using the bump and run that I have spent the last three years practicing in St Andrews. (Click on any of the photos to enlarge.)

Hole #1 – 396   yard – “Raynor’s Start” Raynor eases golfers into the course with a wide opening par 4.

The second hole is Raynor’s take on North Berwick’s famous Redan hole. In keeping with the traditional Redan hole, the green moves left and away from the player with a large slope on the right.

Hole # 3 – 335 yards – “Plateau” The third hole is a beautiful short par 4. The carry to the fairway is just over 200 yards, which leaves a wedge into a difficult, elevated green. It is a classic risk / reward hole.

The 4th hole was one of my favorites on the golf course. It is a blind approach and reminded me of Prestwick Golf Club’s 17th hole, the “Alps.” The sheer size of the green is striking. The green truly is a bowl, and if you miss the bowl, a heavy price is to be paid.

Hole #5 – 207 yards – “Biarritz”

The 5th hole is an extremely strong par 3. Reaching the green can be a struggle with the hole playing over 200 yards and uphill. I had seen photos of this hole many times before visiting the course and it lived up to the photographs. The ocean and waves crash to your right as you strike the tee shot.

Hole #6 – 520 yards – “Olinda” The photo above is the hilly approach to the 6th hole. The 6th hole is one of the many blind tee shots on the course. Whereas blind tee shots are a mark of weakness on modern designs, they don’t detract at Fishers Island. They add to the quirk and strength of the design, harkening back to a Scottish or English links. The dry and firm condition of the course can be seen with the “burnt” look in this fairway.

Hole #7 – 363 yards – “Latimer” This tee box is one of the most stunning on the course. The “dinging” of the lighthouse seen in the distance can be heard across the course, lulling golfers into peaceful state. An iron off the tee takes the lake on the right out of play, and an extra half club is needed to reach the raised green.

Hole #11 – 164 yards – “Eden” This an extremely picturesque par 3. It would take an entire panorama of the scene to truly do this hole justice. The raised green is difficult to hit during the high winds typically found at the course. This is an “Eden hole,” based on the famous 11th hole at the St. Andrews Old Course.

Hole #12 – 389 yards – “Winthrop” The approach into the 12th hole is one of my favorites on the course. A severe left to right slope can be seen in the photo above and provided many options in terms of approach shot. During one of the rounds, I let my drive leak right, short siding myself to a front left pin. I was able to throw my approach into the slope, which took the ball back down towards the pin. I loved this hole and wanted to sit in the fairway all afternoon with a bucket of balls.

Hole #14 – 425 yards – “Cape”

The 14th hole is unquestionably deserving of the number one handicap rating. Positioning in the fairway is crucial in order to have a manageable angle and length into the green. The design is a great use of the land in this area of the course. Legend has it that people have taken drives straight at this green over the water. It would take one hell of a carry. I shot my range finder across the lake. It would take a 340 yard carry to cross the water from the back tees.

Hole #16 – 146 yards – “Short” This hole rounds out four very strong par 3s at Fishers Island. The large green looks easily accessible, but once the wind starts whipping, the target becomes much smaller on this short hole.

Fishers Island had some great holes, especially the stretch of 3-7 on the front nine. One aspect of the course that immediate struck me as weak however, is the par 5 18th hole, measuring 452 yards from the back tees. The hole would make a good par 4, but is instead a weak par 5. Why not drop it to par 71 and make the last hole a par 4? Apparently, during tournaments, the hole plays as a par 4 from the championship tees – thank goodness.

The entire experience of Fishers Island was something that I will not forget. It is a special place. I am very grateful to my friends for hosting me at Fishers Island Club. I hope to go back to play more golf on the island, perhaps at Hay Harbor’s 9-hole course. My rounds at the Big Club also confirmed my interest in playing more Seth Raynor designed courses – the quest continues!

5 Comments on “Fishers Island Club Review”

Thanks for the review and the pics. I suspect the pix, as nice as they are, do not do the place justice. I can only imagine how challenging that course is in the wind–and I suspect in that location there is wind most of the time.

That is a very good point – the photos don’t fully capture the grandeur or scale of some of the holes / views. It would take a pro photographer and lots of time to truly do the course justice. I never had strong winds during any of my rounds, which is a rarity out there. Hopefully I’ll go back at some point to experience some Scotland-esque winds!

The insight of the private resort is great and the review showcased the beautiful setting and course design. Any idea on membership criteria and cost? With this in mind is the ranking and the exclusive intrigue justified in your opinion?

A side note Graylyn – Your travels offer such variation which is great.

Thank you for the comment, Ru! Membership at Fishers are legacies in many cases, but I’m not sure of any criteria or cost. The course’s exclusive intrigue is certainly justified, especially with the remote island aspect of the course. The Seth Raynor designed course is definitely worthy of the ranking well within the top 100.

It is one of the best settings for golf I have ever experienced. I will never forget sitting on the tee waiting for the group in front to clear and taking in the beautiful clear and crisp views of the sound and the Connecticut shore with the tress in full fall color. The water was so clear that it was easy to watch the Stripped Bass patrolling the shore. The course hits you from both sides from both its design and fantastic location.

International One Design Class World Championship 2022

Fishers island, new york hosted by the fishers island yacht club september 17th – 23rd 2022.

Welcome competitors, family, and friends to the 2022 International One Design World Championship. The host Fishers Island fleet looks forward to sharing our delightful sailing venue with old friends and sailors new to Fishers Island.

We sail off West Harbor, which is part of Fishers Island Sound. September conditions bring summer winds from the southwest or frontal-passage winds from around the clock. Water conditions are generally smooth inside Flat Hammock. Current is quite predictable and island features provide protected areas from the tidal currents. The racing area is mostly free from interfering motorboats wakes and other traffic. It is largely free from rocks and other treacherous obstructions along its shorelines.

At the end of this regatta, the Class will crown a new World Champion. Tom Fremont-Smith will look to defend his hard-fought 2021 win in Bermuda, and there will be 15 eager competitors looking to unseat him. The first IOD World Champion was crowned in 1959, Herman Whiton, founder of the highly competitive Sail Training Facility, who won in Bermuda.   It will take some serious sailing over many years to reach Marblehead’s Bill Widnall’s record of 10 World Championships, but no doubt there are those who aspire to that achievement.

Our fleet is a mix of wooden and fiberglass boats. We have two boats from Herman Whiton’s racing school in Long Island: Norwegian Wood and Etesian , built in the late 1950s. We have fiberglass boats from several builders plus a couple of true classics: Jester , completely rebuilt by Charlie Van Voorhis and Jim Thompson (Fishers Island’s top qualifiers in this championship regatta), which was sailed in her first season, 1937, by Arthur Knapp, author of the infamous “Race Your Boat Right.” Allegra , owned by Kip Williams, was one of the first three boats delivered in late 1936 and raced by Allegra (Leggy) Knapp; it has the distinction of winning the very first IOD race sailed. The trophy won in that race was gifted to the Class by Leggy (Knapp) Mertz and is awarded to the second-place finisher in the World Championships; it is known as the Allegra Trophy.

Fishers Island often sees up to four past world champions competing on any given Saturday.   Waiting in the wings are a number of top sailors, who are formidable on the water. Your host fleet is competitive and those not racing will be watching this regatta closely in hopes of gaining insight into how to sail their boats faster. They are all looking forward to sailing in regattas your fleets host in the near future.

Fishers Island thanks the Bermuda Fleet for the superb job done conducting the 2021 World Championships under difficult circumstances. We are introducing the round-robin format in an effort to allow more sailors in our Class to compete in our signature Championship. By bringing more sailors into our championship, we hope to broaden the appeal of our boats and class among the best sailors in the venues where fleets exist. Our goal is to attract the finest sailors in the world to race the finest yacht available for one-design sailing.

Good luck and may the fastest team win!

The Fishers Island Yacht Club will officially open for the season with the 2021 Commissioning Ceremony on May 29, 2021.

We are working with the  Island Community Board (ICB)  and the  Island Health Project (IHP)  on an updated COVID-19 policy for 2021. We will continue to observe and enforce the COVID-19 protocols legally mandated by New York State.

ALL  members and guests are required to wear masks while on the property and observe proper social distancing. Consistent adherence to these protocols will ensure your ability to participate in club activities or to maintain docking privileges. We will be posting updates to FIYC’s COVID-19 protocols on this website, so be sure to check back often.

With your cooperation, we can all enjoy a safe and successful summer.

  • Masks must be worn by everyone on Yacht Club property. You cannot predict who will be on the property or using the docks, so be prepared.
  • Our heads will be closed for the duration of the summer.
  • If you borrow any Club boats, you will be asked to sanitize them in addition to regular cleaning by the staff after each use.
  • The Junior Sailing dock is off-limits, especially during daily lessons scheduled from 1-4 pm Mon-Fri.

Please call the Club if you have any questions 631-788-7036.

Covid-19 Response, Update No. 2 – Club Opening Plans May 6, 2020

  • All plans are tentative and all final decisions will be in compliance with local, New York State, and federal regulations. The first priority of the Board of Governors is the safety of our staff, members, and the Island community.
  • Our marina has been inspected and the necessary repairs of winter storm damage will be complete in the next week or so. Our Board has decided to open the marina for slip contract holders to access their boats on May 15 th . Boats can be delivered prior to that date, but care must be used when walking off the docks safely. Payments for slips by the delivery date are required.
  • We plan to begin staffing the Club starting Saturday, June 6 th  and will continue on weekends for the month of June. Of course, that schedule will be subject to any NYS restrictions that impact the Club’s operations.
  • Pursuant to the NYS Executive Order and the Island’s safety protocols, face masks will be required of everyone entering the Club’s property, whether from the marina or the parking lot. Compliance with these requirements is important for the safety of our staff and members.
  • We will hold our Annual Meeting of the members virtually on Sunday, May 24 th , at 1600. You will soon receive formal notice of the meeting from the Club Secretary, Laurie Finan, along with a Zoom link and password, meeting agenda, and proxy. We will hold the Commissioning ceremony on Sunday, June 28 th , at 1700. If the restrictions on crowd sizes remain in effect, we will broadcast the Commissioning over Zoom.
  • The Board has created a new Summer Activity Committee to advise the Board on adopting new opportunities for member and family activities that would be consistent with the Island community’s safety protocols. This Committee has been charged with the task of creatively developing activities at the Club that would give members the opportunity to use the Club’s Bullseyes, 420s, Lasers, and paddleboards in a family-friendly manner. The Committee will also offer activities to take advantage of our extraordinary waterfront location. Family and individual lessons will also be available in a safe manner for those wishing to learn new boating skills.
  • Unfortunately, the 2020 Bullseye Nationals, which was scheduled to be hosted by the Club in August, has been postponed to August 2021. The Bullseye racing fleet, which is exclusively comprised of family sailors, hopes to conduct very informal races this summer, which will give new family sailors using a Club Bullseye an opportunity to experience the thrill of racing.

If you have any questions about the summer, more information will be available at the May 24 th Annual Meeting

John B. Glendon Commodore

COVID-19 Response April 24, 2020

  • All plans are tentative and all final decisions will be in compliance with New York State and federal regulations. Our first priority is the safety of our staff, members, and the Island community.
  • On Friday, April 17, 2020, the NYS Executive Order requiring the closure of all marinas for “recreational uses” was modified to permit marinas to open for “personal use as long as strict social distancing and sanitization protocols are followed.” The Yacht Club, however, is not yet in a position to open and will remain closed until further notice. Due to the Island community’s Covid-19 protocols, the Club’s marina docks and the marina electrical and plumbing facilities have not yet been inspected for safety. Winter storm damage must be repaired. Also, the Club’s sanitation facilities have not yet been commissioned.
  • Once the marina does open, it will do so on a limited basis. Transient boaters will not be accepted.  Only Club members and non-members who have contracts to use reserved slips for the season at the marina will be permitted to use the marina. We expect that these contract holders, all of whom are members of the Island community, will respect the Island’s safety protocols, including the completion of the IHP Covid-19 Census form if entering the Island by boat from the mainland. The Club’s Board of Governors will provide a further update on the marina in May.
  • The Club will be adding new video surveillance equipment to the marina to enhance our capabilities to ensure compliance with Club’s rules and the safety of the Island community.
  • The entrance to the Club’s property has been closed with yellow tape, and the Club’s bathrooms and ice-making machine are not functional or accessible. The Club will not open with staff on site until a date to be determined by the Board.

Covid-19 Response April 16, 202

  • The Yacht Club and marina are closed as required by New York State’s executive order. The Club’s docks are not available for access to members’ boats presently docked at the marina. The entrance to the Club’s property has been closed with yellow tape, and the Club’s bathrooms and ice-making machine are not accessible. Members have been instructed not to bring their boats to the marina at this time. A sign will be posted at the end of the dock advising all boaters that the marina is closed.
  • The Club will not open with staff in the office until a date to be determined by the Board. The opening date will be consistent with all governmental regulations and will include conditions necessary for the protection of our staff, members, and the Island community. Those conditions will be developed following consultation with Dr. Chris Ingram of the Island Health Project.
  • The Club’s marina will not open until New York State lifts its executive order and the Board has developed appropriate safeguards for the protection of all concerned. The same conditions apply to the Club’s launch services.
  • The Club’s May 24th Annual Meeting will likely be conducted via Zoom so that our members will have an early opportunity to hear from the Club’s Flag officers and Board of Governors about how the Covid-19 pandemic will impact the Club’s operations this summer.
  • The Club’s annual Commissioning Party scheduled for May 24th will likely be canceled. A final decision will be made by the Board at a later date. The Club’s other social events and its sailing programs will also be reviewed for any necessary cancellations or modifications.
