Dream Yacht: "Renewal is more a matter of co-ownership than boat purchase"

At the end of the 2023 summer season, Loïc Bonnet, founder of Dream Yacht, gives an overview of his yacht sales and charter activities in various destinations around the world. An opportunity to note changes in customer behavior.

An ever-increasing variety of yacht charter customers

For Dream Yacht, the summer yacht charter season in Europe ends on a positive note. Occupancy rates exceeded 90% in the high season between mid-June and early September. The company boasts that 50,796 people sailed on its 830 boats in over 50 destinations during the summer. With cabin cruises, Dream Yacht recorded a 27% increase in sales over 2022.

Loïc Bonnet, founder of Dream Yacht, highlights the development of last-minute booking, which allows customers to adapt, but is also a challenge for fleet organization: "There are always more last-minute cancellations. For example, despite the fires in Greece, we didn't have any cancellations. People could look at the maps and decide where to go. Our most popular destinations in Europe remain Croatia, Greece and Italy, and in the West Indies, the BVI, Martinique and the Bahamas. We had to optimize our existing bases, as the fleet had been greatly reduced by Covid. We continue to attract new entrants to yachting, with skippered charters in excess of 50% in the Mediterranean and Sunloft yachts selling well. The increase in this demand poses a problem in terms of the cost of bringing skippers to the area."

At the same time, Dream Yacht concedes a very difficult summer in the West Indies, due to very high airfares, which limited bookings until December, but seems to be improving.

From the operator's point of view, Loïc Bonnet stresses the need for major investments and expenditure, which are not always easy to sustain: "Boat prices have risen by 50% in 5 years, which means we have to really question our business model. At the same time, we're facing a scarcity of marina berths. By buying electric boats, we're looking for new customers from outside the boating industry, but we have to bear the extra cost. Initial feedback from the electric Aura 51 this summer has been good, with good reliability and responsiveness from Fountaine-Pajot."

Boat sales on the decline

Dream Yacht's boat sales business, is facing more difficulties, linked to the economic context, explains the founder of Dream Yacht, who highlights different trends from recent years: "Dream Yacht sales are down 40%. The Covid dried up the market for a few years. The affluent middle classes haven't seen their incomes rise as much as boat prices. We're seeing a trend towards downsizing, with more sales of small boats, which in our case are 38 to 42 footers, and more demand for monohulls. This is true for both new and pre-owned boats. We're also seeing people switching from buying a boat on their own to taking part in our fractional programs to cut costs. This trend isn't making sales of electric boats any easier either, with an electric Dufour 530 costing around ?60,000 more than a traditional model."

Jeremy Tutt’s new role with Dream Yacht Sales & Ownership

Dream Yacht Sales & Ownership has appointed UK native Jeremy Tutt as global yacht sales director. Tutt brings a wealth of industry expertise and a proven track record of success to his new role, having held key positions in the marine and yacht sales sector for over two decades.

After gaining his commercial sailing licenses and sailing around the British Isles with charities involved in adventurous sailing, Tutt ventured into the world of sailing and yacht management. His roles include UK MD of The Moorings Sailing Holidays where he was involved in the launch of the yacht ownership program in the UK.

He later furthered his global perspective with roles in establishing operations and dealerships in international markets for Azimut Yachts . Tutt’s diverse experience also includes stints with Princess Yachts and Ancasta Yachts ‘ London franchise.

In his new role, Tutt will focus on customer service excellence and strategic growth initiatives.

“We are delighted to welcome Jeremy to the Dream Yacht Sales team,” says Dan Lockyer, deputy CEO of the Dream Yacht Group . The company was originally launched in the Seychelles with just six boats. It now claims to have one of the largest charter fleets, plus 40 destinations worldwide. “His wealth of experience and proven leadership capabilities make him the ideal candidate to drive our global yacht sales efforts forward. We look forward to the valuable contributions he will bring to our organisation,” Lockyer continues.

Tutt says he is excited to join Dream Yacht Sales and to contribute to the company’s continued growth and success. “With a strong team and a clear vision, I am confident that together, we will achieve new heights in the global yacht sales market.”

Amanda Haley is an accomplished industry veteran, delivery captain and American Sailing Association (ASA) instructor.

CLEARWATER, FL – Dream Yacht Sales & Ownership welcomes Amanda Haley as new Yacht Sales Director for North America. Amanda joins the company with years of industry experience in both yacht brokerage and most recently charter ownership sales for Navigare Yachting . Living aboard a 50-foot monohull herself, Amanda found her passion in helping other individuals find just the right boat for them and educating boaters about the vast possibilities charter management programs offer to make their sailing dreams a reality.

She now brings this expertise to her new role of Yacht Sales Director North America for Dream Yacht, where she continues to inspire others to pursue their dreams on the water.

Dream Yacht’s position as the world leader in yacht sales with the widest variety of locations and models presents an exciting new challenge for Amanda, with opportunities to further develop charter management program sales throughout North America. Her experience is also welcomed for expanding retail sales in the East Coast U.S. and Florida, where Dream Yacht is the exclusive dealer for Bali Catamarans.

Amanda’s journey in the yachting industry began in 2016 when she joined Denison Yachting as a broker, where she tirelessly worked to fulfill the dreams of yacht ownership of fellow sailing enthusiasts. After three successful years, she established her own brokerage firm in Fort Lauderdale and then embraced a new chapter as a Sales Agent for Navigare Yachting in 2019.

Amanda Haley is a dream-chasing sailor, renowned for her unwavering passion and expertise in the yachting industry. With her USCG 50T Master License and a wealth of experience as a Captain, she has successfully completed numerous 700+ nautical mile deliveries along the East coast of North America, Central America, and throughout the Caribbean. She is also an American Sailing Association (ASA) Instructor certified in levels 101 to 114 and a mother of four.

Vicky Karantzavelou

Vicky  is the co-founder of TravelDailyNews Media Network where she is the  Editor-in Chief . She is also responsible for the daily operation and the financial policy. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Tourism Business Administration from the Technical University of Athens and a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Wales.

The long tale of the yacht linked to a Russian oligarch and abandoned in the Caribbean for more than 2 years finally draws to a close

An undisclosed buyer has finally stepped up to the helm of the Alfa Nero superyacht, ending a two-year-long saga, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

That buyer agreed last week to pay $40 million, a huge discount to the $67.6 million that former Google CEO Eric Schmidt bid last year, a deal he eventually abandoned.

The Antigua and Barbuda government sold the superyacht, which houses an infinity pool that converts to a helipad or dancefloor.

The massively discounted price can be attributed to authorities' need "to get the boat sold," Richard Higgins, a broker who represented the buyer, told Bloomberg.

Higgins said the European buyer, whose identify was kept secret, intends to put the superyacht on the charter market.

The person "is not included in the sanctions list of any country or institution," Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda's ambassador to the US, told Bloomberg.

The 267-foot-vessel was seized by Antigua and Barbuda authorities after it was linked to Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev, who was accused by the US Treasury Department of having close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Guryev is the founder of Phosagro, Europe's largest producer of phosphate fertilizers, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index .

The Alfa Nero was among dozens of superyachts seized following global sanctions against Putin's closest associates, which led to billions of dollars in frozen assets.

The Alfa Nero's maiden owner was Guryev, who purchased the vessel for $120 million, according to the US Treasury and the Antigua and Barbuda government . The Russian billionaire had adamantly denied ownership.

After the vessel was seized in 2022, it remained docked in Antigua's Falmouth Harbour, which cost residents of the Caribbean nation $28,000 in weekly tax dollars for maintenance, which took as many as 44 crew members . The superyacht was then valued at $81 million.

In 2023, the Antigua and Barbuda government put the Alfa Nero up for auction, citing hazards due to a lack of maintenance.Eric Schmidt initially won the bidding, for $67.6 million , but eventually backed out after Guryev's daughter claimed ownership of the superyacht.

The most recent acquisition of the Alfa Nero finally ends its ownership limbo, during which it racked up millions of dollars in port fees under the custody of the Antigua and Barbuda authorities, Darwin Telemaque, the Alfa Nero's port manager, told Bloomberg.

Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Antigua and Barbuda taxpayers were footing a $28,000-a-week bill to maintain the Alfa Nero, including the salary of an Italian captain and $2,000-a-day in diesel to keep its air conditioning running. That's because if the AC is turned off, it could let mold spread throughout the vessel and ruin the hardwood interior or a Joan Miró painting onboard, per the WSJ.

US Millionaire’s Dream Boat Marks One of the Biggest Used Yacht Sales This Year

T hirty million is a big number for the used yacht sector and worthy of a truly impressive pleasure craft. With its intimidating silhouette, American pedigree, and lavish onboard amenities, Hospitality fits the bill.

The 2011 Westport changed hands this month for $29.7 million after more than a year on the market.

Hospitality was born to have a great destiny. It was part of the Westport 164 series launched in 2006, comprised of some of the biggest yachts ever built by this shipyard and made entirely of fiberglass. Vongo was the first one launched, but Hospitality quickly became the most successful in the series.

With names like Donald Starkey and William Garden behind it, Hospitality’s prestige was a given. Westport itself is one of the top names in America’s shipbuilding history. Specializing in commercial vessels, it gradually transitioned to luxury yachts between 30 and 50 meters.

This Westport 164 was refitted in 2016 and 2021. It’s designed to accommodate up to 16 guests across seven luxurious staterooms. The master suite stands out as a self-contained apartment with top-notch amenities, a separate private lounge/office area, and access to a private deck. One of the most versatile amenities onboard is the fully equipped gym, which can be converted into a massage room or a luxury spa.

A luxury charter yacht with proven success, the 49-meter (154-foot) Hospitality was also spotted at the famous St Barth New Year’s Celebration, known as a “superyacht showdown.” It was also linked to the name of US millionaire Patrick Willis, who was the alleged owner until now. Willis is one of the self-made millionaires with a classic from-rags-to-riches story. He started working in the automotive repossession industry when he was only 16 and ended up as the owner of American Recovery Service, the biggest national automotive repossession company in the world.

As its name suggests, Hospitality was specifically equipped to meet the needs of its charter guests and even exceed expectations. For more than $200,000 per week, guests benefit from this yacht’s flexible accommodation, beautiful al-fresco areas, and expansive water toy selection. In addition to its size and volume, this American beast comes with a transatlantic range of 4,000 nautical miles (7,400 km) and a proven track record.

The 2011 Hospitality superyacht changed hands for almost $30 million and, most likely, the new owner will continue to reap the benefits of its charter operations. For now, Hospitality remains in the IYC charter fleet – the same company the completed the in-house sale.
