Sail and Science Lofoten 2022-23

We look constantly for ways to use sailing and experiences in nature as a medium for communicating climate science. Our Sail & Science trips were aimed at creating an engaging learning experience, synergised with adventure and Lofotens inspiring nature. 

Lofoten with its fjords and islands is a cruising paradise, but also a brilliant region for observing aspects of arctic climate and ocean science. Lofoten hosts the greatest temperature anomaly relative to latitude in the world, and a uniquely rich marine ekosystem below the surface. 

The Sail & Science weeks consisted of an adventurous sailing itinerary along the peninsula, and a s cience program put together by crew Isak and Alex together with students and professors at the University of Bergen, and with scientific counsel from professor Johan Rockström.  During the summers of 2022-23 we hosted highschool graduates, families and scientists on these exiting trips! 

I loved the balance of Sail & Science. The combo included not only sailing, exploring and learning, but also the little adventures we invented ourselves. The agenda was set by the winds, and wherever we went it was fantastic. We met the sunrise on the morning hike, took the dingy to a deserted beach on Værøy, spontaneously barbecued on Bune's sand dunes, rented a hot tub and swam in the arctic waters of Henningsvær… the list goes on.

Incredibly beautiful, educational and above all relaxed.

Arrive in the afternoon after 16.00 and get settled onboard the Abel Tasman in Svolvær. We will get to know each other and the yacht, going through safety procedures and the basics of being part of a crew. We have dinner and discuss the coming week, looking at potential destinations and current weather conditions, on which our itinerary will strongly depend. If we feel energised after dinner and if winds are good we might even start sailing that evening.

Over these 5 days we explore our favourite places around Lofoten and go through our “Science” program. We start days together around breakfast looking at what our current location has to offer. The crew will take you on joint activities to known and less known attractions, though there will be time for you to arrange your own hikes, morning swims or walks through galleries and shops. All meals during the week will be served onboard, though we highly recommend trying one of the local restaurants!

Usually we sail between 2 - 6 hours at least 4 of these days, avoiding motoring as much as possible. 1- 2 hours a day are dedicated to our science program in the form of presentations, discussions and other activities, though the subject often pops up at other moments throughout our trip. We might finish off with a quiz, brainstorm, or some other fun activity to wrap up this very serious subject!

On our last day we will be back in Svolvær, where we clean up the yacht together and end our trip sometime late morning.

☐ All food and drink that we consume onboard, except optional beer           and wine or o ther luxuries (Bring your own or ask us stock up before         you arrive)

☐ A bunk bed with a comfy duvet, pillow and bed linen

Not Included:

☐ Travel to and from the boat

☐ Optional meals ashore (Restaurants, cafes etc.)

☐ Optional onshore activities  we might want to do during  the trip, such as museums,  guided tours or renting  kayaks.

Safety: 

Safety is our number one priority onboard and we will begin with briefing you about possible situations, the safety equipment onboard, and procedures in case of an emergency. The boat has all the necessary safety equi pment onboard and we have inflatable life jackets for everyone. The crew has STCW certificates for safety onboard including fire prevention/extinguishing, first aid and CPR, liferaft-handling, and survival techniques at sea.

Life onboard:

The Abel Tasman is a well-proven expedition yacht, while not a luxury yacht she is a very safe and comfortable home. As on all sailboats we will be living close to each other. Be prepared to share a cabin with bunk beds and to squeeze in together around the dinner table. We hope you will feel welcome onboard and use all the areas as you would at home. When we are sailing we want you to feel like a part of the crew and as much as possible take part in all the tasks, such as sail-handling, steering, and mooring. At sea everyday tasks are a bit harder than ashore and we will all work together with keeping the boat tidy, cooking, and do dishes. The nights will either be spent anchored in a bay where we have to use the dinghy to get to land, or in a marina of a nice town.

Getting here:

Svolvær is best reached by ferry from Bodø or by bus from Narvik train station. Arriving by flight is also possible to the small Svolvær airport or the larger international airport in Narvik. Arriving by car is a possibility as well.

Level of trip:

There are no requirements of previous sailing experience and the  Abel Tasman is a very safe and stable vessel, ideal to get introduced to the world of sailing. We are very happy to teach, and hope you will learn a lot about sailing during the trip. However, you should bear in mind that this is not a luxury cruise, but rather an expedition style adventure where you will be a part of the crew. When we are ashore we will do moderately challenging hikes and excursions, these are optional but we hope everyone will be eager to join.

We will stock up the boat before you arrive with food, snacks, and drinks. Most food will be cooked onboard, doing simpler meals while we are sailing and more advanced meals while moored. Cooking and cleaning in the galley will be a shared duty and everyone will take turns making meals. If you have any allergies or specific preferences you have to tell us beforehand so we know what to buy. A few times along the way we will have the possibility to eat at a nice restaurant or cafe.

Our Sail and Explore trips are all about the exclusive natural experiences the Lofoten archipelago has on offer when approached from the sea. From the Abel Tasman we reach inaccessible fjords and islands, getting the privilege to see some of Lofotens rarely visited gems. We also mix the week up with stops at some of Lofotens relaxed fishing villages. Our exact itinerary is always flexible to weather conditions, but here are some of our most common destinations:

• Værøy Værøy has been voted among the 5 most beautiful islands on the planet, and is one of our favourite destinations in good weather. From our anchorage we have the possibility to explore the islands inaccessible western side.
• The Lonkan Fjord This is a fjord in the Møysalen national park only accessible by boat or a days hike. It’s surrounded by the highest mountains in the Lofoten area offering some adventurous hikes.
• The “outer side” of Lofoten The North Western coast of Lofoten is referred to as the peninsulas “wild” side. Sailing here can be an interesting experience as you are exposed to the entire Norwegian Sea, but in fair weather we can access some of Lofoten’s most beautiful and remote beaches and anchorages.
• Nusfjord This is Lofoten’s oldest active fishing village and located in an impressive fjord.
• Reine Reine is a classical stop with some of Lofoten’s most dramatic sceneries. Here we usually go fishing and hike to the Bunes beach for a “Midnight sun sunset” barbecue.
• Henningsvær This is Lofoten’s most famous fishing village. It is a great place to finish the week in a relaxed way and enjoy dinner at a restaurant.

Between our stops we usually sail 2 – 6 hours at least 3 days during the week. We always try minimise motoring and enjoy the thrill of sailing the Abel Tasman. With her 27.5 meter high schooner rigging she can cruise at speeds up to 12 knots. Onboard you will be more than welcome to be part of the crew, learning about sailing and assisting in the operation of the yacht.

Sail and Science – 7 days – up to 7 guests

Our Sail and Science trips take the best experiences from our Explore trips but with an integrated “Science program”. This program is created by crew and climate physics students Isak and Alex Rockström in collaboration with Keith Tuffley at The Adventure Yacht Company, and with professors and fellow students at the University of Bergen. The program consists of presentations, discussions and activities and aims at creating an engaging learning experience connected to the nature we sail through. By the end of the trip we hope to have given you a better understanding of our planets climate systems as well as the tools to better navigate the complex world of climate science in politics, news and everyday choices. Fishing, diving, hiking… taking a leisurely stroll to the 19 th hole. Most of us have an outdoor pursuit that we wish we could give more time to.

Yet when vacation time rolls around, we inevitably find ourselves taken further from the activities which fuel our souls. Sure, lying on the beach is great, but what if you crave a little adventure alongside it? This is where an adventure yacht charter takes centre stage. 

A crewed yacht charter offers unparalleled relaxation and luxury, perfect for those who wish to kick back and worry about nothing for a week or so. However, as well as being your floating home-from-home, your charter yacht is also the perfect means of trying all manner of outdoor activities – anywhere in the world.

After a morning dive, an afternoon fishing, or a full day of exploring coves – packing up and heading back to your accommodation is never enjoyable. When your accommodation is moored only metres away, and there is delicious fresh food awaiting you – it’s a totally different story.

A fun-packed day of exhilarating activity can certainly revive the mind, but can leave your body feeling in need of some TLC. So why not opt for a yacht with on-board hot tub, sauna and steam shower, to relieve your aching muscles? Your crew could even arrange a masseur to come aboard and work on any knots. 

Needless to say, if you have even a passing interest in watersports, a crewed yacht charter offers everything you could need – and more. Your captain can expertly guide you to the next scuba spots, to check out the local wildlife. Avoid the crowds and bypass the uncomfortable transfers, weighed down with your equipment. Your private tender will zip you straight to the heart of the action in a matter of moments.

Keen divers won’t want to miss the opportunity to see the stunning, often deserted, islands of Raja Ampat in Indonesia. The diversity of vibrant sealife here is astounding. A trip to land may also tempt you, with hiking and nature walks promising incredible scenery. 

Many divers will have the Great Barrier Reef on their bucket lists. Imagine waking up in your sumptuous cabin, enjoying a freshly prepared breakfast on deck, then slipping straight into the water to marvel at the wildlife. 

Perhaps you’ve heard of the stunning depths of the Blue Hole in Belize. What you may not realise is that there are many other islands nearby, awaiting exploration. Many charter crews are also dive instructors or enthusiasts, so they can plot the perfect course for a dream day of diving. They will also be able to encourage and instruct those who are new to the diving world. 

Charter yachts commonly come with dive equipment on board as standard, to save the rigmarole of picking up and transporting equipment. If this isn’t the case, it can easily be arranged to be ready on board for your arrival.

If your idea of the perfect day is catching some waves, consider chartering in Fiji or Costa Rica. World-renowned surfing awaits you, and there’s no need to miss any of the action. Your crew will advise on the best surf spots, and can take you straight to the biggest breaks on the tender. Your yacht will be fully decked with boards and wetsuits, if you’d prefer not to travel with your own.

Aruba and the Dominican Republic are perfect charter areas for kite-surfers. Meanwhile, paddle boarding on the warm, calm waters of the British Virgin Islands is always a dream.

Hike and Ski

Charter vacations are not just for the underwater adventurers  Some activities on terra-firma are best accessed by boat. Ice-hiking under the guidance of your crew in Antarctica, is an experience you’ll never forget. Climbing, skiing, and seeing the fjords backlit by the Northern Lights are all part of a charter in Northern Norway. What better way to warm up than fresh tea and cake from the panoramic views of the heated saloon?

On your charter, you'll find plenty to keep you busy and entertained including a beach club for you to relax on the edge of the water. You can visit the well-equipped gym so that you can keep up with your fitness routine at sea and in addition soak up the bubbles in style in the deck jacuzzi.

Whatever your activities on your charter, you'll find some impressive features are seamlessly integrated to help you including Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. You can stay comfortable on board whatever the weather, with air conditioning during your charter.

Performance & Range

Adventure is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 6,334 nautical miles from her 86,800 litre fuel tanks at cruising speed. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

Onboard Adventure has a range of toys and accessories to keep you and your guests entertained on the water throughout your stay. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Guests can feel the wind in their hair and jump the waves on one of the two Yamaha WaveRunners. Another excellent feature are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If that isn't enough Adventure also features a seabob, wakeboards, scuba diving equipment, inflatable water toys and snorkelling equipment. Adventure features two tenders, but leading the pack is a 11.58m/38' Novurania Chase Tender to transport you in style.

Adventure is available upon request for charter this winter. She is already accepting bookings this summer for cruising in the Mediterranean.

Triton Submarines is one of the major players in the submersibles arena

The days when an expensive watch or bag would impress your peers is gone. Now, status symbols revolve around exclusivity and one-of-a-kind experiences. The same applies in the yachting industry where the battle for the longest yacht or priciest interior has, in some circles, been replaced by the most epic charter experiences or the coolest marine gadgets. As such, submersibles, which allow guests to explore the greatest depths of the ocean, have risen to the top of many yacht owners’ wish lists and become the ultimate status symbol.

Triton Submarines is one of the major players in the submersible arenas. Claiming to build the world’s “finest” submersibles, the company offers a wide variety of private and commercial models ranging from $2.8 million to $35 million in price. Patrick Lahey, Co-Founder and CEO of Triton Submarines , gives his thoughts on why submersibles are having a moment and unveils some major discoveries from recent Triton dives.

What makes a submersible the ultimate toy for a superyacht owner?

Patrick Lahey: Social currency has changed in recent years from the materialistic to experiential, so rather than investing in ‘objects’ people now invest in unique meaningful experiences. This can be seen in the changing use of yachts, from status symbols to genuine platforms for adventure and discovery. As yacht use has changed, so has their design, in order to accommodate more onboard assets for exploration when visiting remote regions – like tenders, helicopter and submersibles.

Furthermore, a Triton submersible is analogous to a Swiss army knife. A Triton can be configured to do whatever a client is interested in achieving. For example, if a client is interested in filming or documentation, we can and do equip the submersible with the latest technology to ensure they can accomplish these objectives. Likewise, we can equip a submersible to do marine science, archaeology, salvage or leave these features out if the intention is to simply enjoy recreational diving.

Please tell us about some discoveries from recent Triton dives.

In recent years, Triton owners have discovered over 40 new species, dived to the bottom of the world’s five oceans, undertaken the first ever live broadcast from 300m below the ocean’s surface, dived on the RMS Titanic, discovered buried treasure, filmed documentaries watched by billions of viewers, carried Heads of State to read marine reservation declarations live from 200m deep, tagged sixgill sharks for the first time at depth… and no doubt created countless other memorable experiences with their families.

For example, we built the deepest diving sub in the world, The Triton 36000/2 (named the Limiting Factor or LF by our client, and recently renamed Bakunawa by the sub’s new owner - Inkfish). The LF made it possible for this client to safely reach the deepest place in each of the five oceans (The Five Deeps Expedition), a feat never achieved before. While this extraordinary mission was underway, we also mapped 750,000 square kilometers of the deep ocean at a resolution not possible before, collected over 400,000 samples, and identified 40 new species, which benefits all of humanity.

We’re very proud of the achievements and important contribution the majority of our clients make to a better understanding of the deep ocean. Ray Dalio’s Triton sub, the Triton 3300/3 MKII’s operated by OceanX, captured the first ever footage of the Giant Squid in 2011. This same Triton sub completed the deepest dives on the Great Barrier Reef with none other than Sir David Attenborough on board, and this craft was used to film the BBC Blue Planet series, which had a viewership greater than any film of its kind in history.

Which are your most popular submersibles?

Our best-selling model is the Triton 3300/3 MKII of which we have now delivered ten units and is the most successful series-built submersible in history, in terms of both sales and achievements. Carrying three persons to depths of up to 1,000m it is the submersible of choice for adventurers, marine researchers, documentary producers and underwater archaeologists.

Anyone who has watched the BBC’s Blue Planet, Galapagos or David Attenborough Great Barrier Reef series will be familiar with it. It also recently featured in Will Smith’s Welcome to Earth. The extraordinary capability, reliability and payload of this model makes it a true workhorse that can be fitted out with a remarkable array of additional equipment in order to undertake a wide variety of deep ocean missions.

What new projects is Triton currently working on?

We always have a number of concepts and models under development as part of our ongoing program as part of our commitment to progress how people will experience and engage with the deep ocean for generations to come. Our latest is a collaboration with Espen Oeino International and Dark Ocean Design called Project Hercules. It is a high-performance luxury submersible that will deliver an experience that is best likened to that of a private jet. Project Hercules is unique because it’s a design that we haven’t seen yet in the personal submersible industry.

How many submersibles have you sold in the last year?

As a private company, we don’t share commercial data, but we can tell you is that we’re experiencing remarkable demand from numerous sectors, including private owners, the cruise sector, high-end hospitality and commercial operators. Our current sales pipeline eclipses the number of units we sold in the company’s first decade.

How is the price of a submersible calculated?

The price of a submersible is dictated by two primary factors, the depth capacity and number of passengers it carries. At Triton we offer a wide variety of models that cover the requirements of both private and commercial operators. From compact two-person submersibles that dive up to 200m and cost $2.8-million to 66-passenger commercial tourism models that are priced at $13.8-million. When we’re talking ultra-deep, the two-person titanium-hulled 36000/2 that has the proven capability of repeatedly achieving Full Ocean Depth, almost 11,000m, we’re talking an investment in the region of $35-million.

Why not  approach your paths like the road trip of a lifetime — to build an intentional career path that is unique, enjoyable, and adaptive to change.

• Get in the driver’s seat. You don’t have to be confined to a predetermined path and you don’t have to stay on a single track — you can curate a portfolio of experiences. You can embark on a diverse and adventurous journey filled with discovery.
• Know that the plan is iterative. When you set off on a road trip, you don’t plug your ultimate destination into the GPS and drive there as quickly and directly as possible. You ask yourself some key questions about what you want to experience along the journey: What kinds of places do I want to visit? What do I want to see and experience? When you embark on your career, know that it is okay to make detours.
• Be open to unexpected opportunities and load up your trunk. On a  road trip, change is expected — that’s what makes it a rich adventure. Approach your career path with openness to unforeseen possibilities and seize them. You can even loop back to revisit somewhere you’ve been before with fresh eyes and new experience under your belt. As you explore, practice articulating the connections between where you’ve been and where you’re going. You should learn how to transfer your unique skills to each new role, as they can make you an asset in new spaces.

Who is alexander mashkevitch.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

In 2010 he was on the Forbes list of billionaires at #287. In 2017, he was on the list at #1098, with a worth of $1.9 billions. Now his worth is 3 billion dollars.

She has accommodations for 18 guests and 19 crew members on board. The VIP suites have fold-down balconies that add to the grandeur.

The onboard atmosphere is bright and inviting with subtle finishes. The entertainment areas are open to provide more sheltered and intimate formal spaces.

The yacht has an extensive health and beauty center with a spa and an expansive beach club.

The beach club creates the perfect area for guests to enjoy indoor/outdoor living. There is also a swimming platform where guests can leap into the water below.

She has an on-deck jacuzzi to soak up the bubbles and the views. The yacht also has an elevator for convenient access to her different decks and a comprehensive gym onboard. The tender garage is brimming with towable toys and tenders.

Reymond Langton Design also contributed to the exterior design of the LADY LARA yacht. She was built by Lürssen and delivered from their Rendsburg shipyard in 2015. The exterior has sweeping curves and elegant but masculine features.

LADY LARA was code-named project Orchid when she was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in 2015 and later renamed. She has a full displacement hull which gives her exceptional speeds in the water.

She has a white aluminum superstructure and teak decks throughout. The exterior is accented by underwater lights, which illuminate her at the night.

The LADY LARA yacht is a 91m superyacht with a beam of 14.82m and a draft of 4m. The vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines and has a displacement of 2,945 gross tons.

She features an advanced stabilization system that provides guests with the best comfort levels on board by minimizing the rolling motion of the vessel. The $180 million yacht has a $14 – $15 million annual running cost.

She is an award-winning yacht that holds an award from the Asia Boating competition in 2016. LADY LARA has a Lloyd’s Register classification.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

Antila 22 has a very modern design line, which resembles its elder sister Antila 24.4.

Its users comfort was the main aim to be achieved during the designing process. There is a comfortable double bunk (berth) in the bow part (zone), and the bunk under the cockpit is not smaller than in Antila 24 yacht. We also provide a functional and original kambuz with a double-burner cooker and a table top combined with a sink. On the opposite side – a sanitary cabin. In the midship area there are two sofa-beds. We wish to emphasize that the height in the mess room is 1,78m. Antila 22 is the only boat, which having the length of 22 feet, offers a full standing position for the crew members inside it. Outside there is a two-meter long cockpit with open stern where 6 to 8 persons can have a comfortable seat. The cockpit guarantees enjoying the evenings also with guests from other boats. The yacht will be equipped with a steel sliding keel and an engine fixed on a pantograph.

Our constructor Jacek Daszkiewicz has applied an innovative shape of the hull bottom to make the yacht fast. We also assume very efficient (high) initial and final stability to ensure safety of sailing.

TECHNICAL DATA

PREMIERE 2017

The world premiere of Antila 24.4 took place at sailing fairs in Düsseldorf held from 21.01.2017 till 29.01.2017. Antila 24.4 is an interesting offer mainly for private shipowners – due to its easy one-person operation servicing. Nevertheless, thanks to its spacious interior, it is also appreciated by charter companies. The interior design is not much different from that of Antila 26. There is enough space for 6 full-size bunks, a kambuz and a toilet. The charter version can have additional folding bunks. The deck has been built with a focus on safe and comfortable sailing. All ropes (lines) for sails handling have been connected to the cockpit. The yacht is equipped with full stabilization of a mast together with a gate to lay it down, a rotational keel and a rudder blade vertically lifted (hoisted). A spacious cockpit and a relatively low superstructure ensure excellent sight distance while sailing. Antila 24.4 has received a reward for the best product in its class granted by the Polish Chamber of Marine and Water Sports. In a competition Land Rover Polish Yachts organized by the monthly magazine „Sails and Land Rover” it obtained the title of the Yacht of 2018.

The new product launched in 2012 by the Antila Shipyard from Radom was the sailing yacht 26CC – a gold medal winner at the Boatshow fairs 2012 in Łódź. This yacht was also granted the (First Prize) Main Reward in the category of Charter Yacht 2012 at the Mazovian Fairs of Water Sports in Giżycko.

The boat, whose style is fairly similar to that of Antila 27, has been designed by the construction team of Adam & Michał Orych. The new design of Antila 26CC is classical and futuristic at the same time. The boat looks marvelous from each side, particularly when you look at its shape with the chine of a hull and a water-line. This yacht, as any other Antila models, focus on safety as well as high comfort provided both in a cockpit and in a mess room.

Ergonomic, spacious and very carefully planned cockpit guarantees comfort during sailing and also during mooring. Wide half decks enable freedom of moving around the deck. Slender rigging with large area (surface) of the sails as well as modern shape of the hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. The innovations applied in the mesa room allowed for dividing the interior of the boat into a kambuz, a separate toilet compartment and two independent lockable cabins with double bunks (berths). Already at a first glance the yacht makes an impression of being a symbol of comfort. Antila 26CC is a product which was created with application (usage) of the best available materials – the luxury and stylish interior, comfortable seats, well constructed mattresses with perfectly made stitching, the best quality materials with alcantry upholstery and its elements in different colours. Application of LED type lighting makes the interior well-lighted at minimal energy consumption. The floor and the cockpit boarded with Teak (Tectona grandis) wood imported from Myanmar (Burma), India and Laos add to the complete feeling of luxury and comfort. We are proud of having created a yacht which satisfies even the most demanding tastes of sailors. Our yacht is manouevrable (good-turning), fast and safe both for private shipowners and for charter companies. Antila 26CC makes it possible to taste the world.

Antila 27 designed by the recognized European designers Michał and Adam Orych is a yacht whose idea has been based on a long-term experience of our designing team. It is a modern boat which follows the latest world trends. Attractive, dynamic body of the yacht is combined with ergonomic shaping of the deck and carefully elaborated details, which reflect discreet sport type elegance and sport characteristics.

The yacht is dedicated to both charter companies and private shipowners whose special requirements have been fulfilled by optimization of production with application (usage) of the latest available materials and technological solutions. Exceptionally easy operating and servicing of the boat is an effect of using sophisticated solutions and possibility of adding more options which would increase the boat’s standards. The interior of the yacht – 1,86m high – is large and arranged in such a way that it enables even up to 10 people to stay together in the mess room. The improved transverse stability allows for increasing the sails area (surface) and sailing speed even at lighter breeze, giving also the feeling of comfort and safety in more difficult conditions. The shape of the hull has been designed to enable reaching high speeds as well as good manoeuvrability (turning) and ease of steering – all of this providing real joy of sailing. Antila 27 is also produced in a full sea version for those who like to be particularly challenged.

Antila 33 is a continuation of the successful lines of Antila 27 and Antila 26CC which are appreciated both in Poland and at foreign markets. Modern and dynamic outline with a hull length of 10,5m and the characteristic chine of the hull make this yacht to be clearly distinguished from other vessels. Spacious and ergonomic cockpit with a fixed table and a separated steersman’s station (stand) with two steering wheels, together with easy sails handling make sailing by this yacht pleasant and comfortable for its captain and his crew. Asymmetrical companion way allows for easier rigging operating and much better interior arrangement. Three lockable cabins, each with a vestibule and a fairly large wardrobe, plus full-size bunks in the mess room allow for comfortable sailing even for a quite numerous crew. Enlarged kambuz, a toilet with a shower and non-collision communication in the yacht’s interior, also in the centerboard version – are the additional advantages that were possible to be achieved by using the asymmetrical companion way. Taking the best possible advantage of the yacht’s width and its relatively high ballast coefficient (ratio) enabled for providing very good transverse stability which in relation to the slender rigging, large area (surface) of the sails and optimum hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. Antila 33 is a proposal for those sailors who appreciate luxury and modernity on inland and sea waters.

Antila A30 to niezwykle komfortowy jacht, którego premiera odbyła się na Targach w Łodzi w 2019 roku. Przeznaczony jest dla osób lubiących sportowe żeglowanie oraz ceniących komfort i nowoczesność. Jacht posiada świetne właściwości nautyczne, co w połączeniu z komfortem żeglowania spełnia najbardziej wysublimowane oczekiwania. Antila 33.3 to jacht w kategorii luksusowych jachtów żaglowych. Jest to nowsza i ulepszona wersja modelu A33. Konstrukcja pod kątem nautycznym spełni oczekiwania nawet najbardziej wymagających żeglarzy. Część mieszkalna zapewnia  komfortowe warunki nocowania nawet dla dziesięcioosobowej załogi. • Zwiększona powierzchnia żagli, oraz zmiana środka ożaglowania. Grot 28,1m2  oraz Fok samochalsujacy 18,5m2 a powiększony Fok nawet  23,1m2.
• Jacht posiada wkładkę denną. co w sposób najbardziej efektywny pozwala rozprowadzić wszelkie instalacje jachtowe: (elektryka, hydraulika, ogrzewanie i klimatyzacja).

Antila 33.3 review: The ideal lakeland explorer

This Polish swing-keel boat with clever folding mast system is perfect for exploring the vast Masurian lakes

Lake sailing in Poland is very different to coastal sailing. In many ways it’s more relaxing. There are no tides to contend with and because you can find a marina or pontoon wherever you are, there’s no requirement to plan a day’s sailing. You can simply go where the wind takes you. When you’ve had enough, just beach-up or anchor in a creek.

But you need your wits about you too. Sailors have to be tuned-in to sudden wind shifts and lulls, blasts between islands that fizzle into nothing, or vice versa. Some lakes are so big you can barely see the shore, connected by canals so shallow it’s easy to run aground. Masts, keels and rudders go up and down all day – and this is where boat design gets clever. Self-charter is possible, but it certainly helps to have a local skipper… and a forgiving boat.

For our adventure with Undiscovered Sailing , our hosts Wojtek and Patrycja Tomala chose an Antila 33.3. Along with the Maxus, this is one of the most popular charter yachts on the lakes.

Antila Yachts is a Polish family-run business, producing boats from 24 to 33ft. One of the largest yachts you’ll see in the region, the Antila 33.3 has many features that make lake sailing easier. Whilst our boat Dziewiata [the 9th] Lady M didn’t come with a radio or electronics – nor even a wind indicator or compass, it did have a bow-thruster, diesel heating and a very nifty folding mast system.

The latter is essential, because the 180 miles of waterways – stretching from the lower Vistula to the Russian border (Kaliningrad) – are connected by canals and rivers with low bridges. We raised and lowered our mast at least twice a day, and it was a simple task thanks to the clever pulley system, aided by an electric winch. 

Usually the Antila 33.3 comes with a fully battened mainsail (28.1m2) and self-tacking jib (18.5m2). However, skipper Wojtek requested a larger (23m2), genoa for our trip knowing that we were keen sailors. A gennaker/ code zero is also an option.

During our five-day charter we only covered a quarter of the vast lake district. Wojtek chose the northern end of the lakes for us, which was quieter (we saw just a handful of boats) with more challenging sailing due to the many islands and narrow waterways.

Buoyage was limited, and there were protected nature reserves where engines were forbidden. Under full sail Dziewiata Lady M pointed high, sailed fast and was smooth and well balanced. Even with the larger foresail she was easy to tack and gybe.

With no instruments, we sailed by line-of-sight and trimmed the sails accordingly. Or, if we just felt like a blast, we sailed around the cormorant-inhabited islands, getting as close as we dared until Wojtek told us to tack. I especially loved the twin helms, enabling us to switch to the high side for better visibility. 

Mast lowering

To get from one lake to another, or to visit one of the many charming Masurian towns, we had to negotiate road bridges. The first job was to lower the boom to the deck by releasing the lazyjacks.

Next, one of us would go to the bow to remove the forestay pin and lift the A-frame whilst the other released the mast purchase line in the cockpit. This needed to be done smoothly and at a consistent pace, keeping two turns on the winch. The lowered mast then rested on a frame at the stern. The process took no more than 10 minutes. 

Once under the bridge, we’d do the same in reverse, taking care to check no lines had got caught under the mast step as it reconnected with the deck. Wojtek continually looked in front and behind. Electric winches are great, he told us, but you need to be careful to avoid snagging as it’s too easy to damage the rig. Indeed, on the day of our arrival we saw a sorry looking ‘banana mast’ in the boatyard waiting for repair (or scrap).

When we passed a yacht raising the mast manually, I was grateful for our electric winch. A crew on the coachroof was vigorously sweating the line to help the winchman in the cockpit. It looked like hard work!

On entering the canals we turned on the engine and lifted the rudder (which can draw as little as 45cm) and keel (which reduces draft from 1.85m to 0.6m). Once raised, the keel swings into a casing that forms part of the saloon table. If you hit an underwater object, the rudder and/or keel will kick-up automatically to prevent damage. This happened whilst I was helming on the canal to Wegorzewo. I moved to the side of the canal to let a vessel past and the rudder must have caught the bank.

Antilla also makes a seagoing version of the Antila 33.3, which is CE category B as opposed to C, and has a fixed keel among other modifications. 

Skippers typically moor stern-to in Poland, and fix the bow to a trot mooring retrieved with a boat hook. This is where the Vetus bow-thruster comes in handy. Dziewiata Lady M could easily ‘stand still’ whilst we grabbed the line, or waited for a boat to pass in tight quarters. With an open side, stern and bathing platform, the Antila 33.3 is an easy boat to access from the shore or (if the weather’s nice) the water after a dip.

Accommodation 

Whilst in the Med or Caribbean you might typically charter a 38ft to 46ft yacht, we had plenty of space for the four of us on our 33-footer. Laura and I both had a double cabin at the stern and Wojtek and Patrycja shared a large, double-door cabin at the bow.

It would be tighter with six people (two in the saloon), but still comfortable with plenty of room for luggage in the lockers. Antila claims the boat can sleep up to 10 people with a maximum payload of 910kg. However, Undiscovered Sailing sensibly caps it at six.

The saloon was spacious with a large table where we spent lively evenings drinking Polish cider and playing Skip-bo. Because of the pale wood finish, 1.95m ceiling and many windows, the boat let in lots of natural light and we didn’t turn on the LED spotlights until late.

Aside from a canal boat holiday I did last Autumn, this was the first time I’ve enjoyed central heating on a charter. Though the weather was mostly pleasant, we had a few rainy days and cool evenings. The diesel-fuelled Webasto heating was a very welcome addition.

I was surprised by how little we used the Yanmar 21 HP engine to charge the batteries. We did top-up using shore-power in the marinas, but happily spent a night at anchor in a creek, and a full day either side, whilst still having plenty of power for lights, heating, fridge, bow-thruster, electric winch and head. 

Not having to power up instruments helped, and for me, this was a big plus-point of chartering in the Polish lakes. It felt like a luxury version of dinghy or day-sailing in a giant harbour. We were surrounded by forest and reed-fringed islands. We rarely knew what time it was and had the freedom to sail where we wanted, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife without double-checking instruments or trying to push the boat for extra knots.

Much as I enjoyed our blustery sails, one of my favourite moments was actually being becalmed. In the busy Solent I’d have no doubt put the engine on, but in Masuria, we simply drifted in silence, feeling the warmth of the sun as it beat through the clouds and listening to a pair of cuckoos call out across the water. When you don’t know how fast you’re going and your destination isn’t important, you stop caring and learn to enjoy the moment, and Dziewiata Lady M is certainly the boat for day-dreaming and relaxation.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
